Nourishment for the spirit Moseley has drawn artistic, wonderfully talented people like a moth to a flame for over a century, and now we bathe in the cultural riches for which they paved the way. Mostly Jazz, Funk and Soul Festival is taking place over the weekend of 10-12 July this year. In the enchanting setting of Moseley park, it is a place to soak in the unique atmosphere of our delightful little village and welcome in talent from all over the world. For a Moseley local, it’s a chance to see all of the familiar faces, and feel the closeness of neighbourly camaraderie, a notion all but lost in modern city life. For those coming from further afield, the festival becomes a community of its own, you’ll feel right at home. Stepping into Mostly Jazz you can feel that you’re in a special place, there is a carefree frivolity in
the air, the spirit of the festival is inviting you into its warm embrace. Artists gracing the stage this year include the timelessly brilliant Sugarhill Gang, curator of Mostly Jazz Craig Charles on the decks, the smooth, luxurious sounds of Gregory Porter, and much more! In short, an absolute treat for the ears, and much needed nourishment for the spirit. Ruby Watson For the full line up and ticket information go to:

A window is just a window You could be forgiven for believing that this is true; white, plastic, contains glass. You could also be forgiven for assuming that double glazing companies are all much of a muchness, giving high quotations then slashing the price with pushy salesmen who outstay their welcome. At Finesse you will find a vastly different type of product and a very different type of company, but really the only way to know if they are for you is to make a visit to the Finesse Factory Showroom.
The factory is open too so you can actually see where your windows and doors will be made, see the fabricators at work and learn about the manufacturing process in as much detail as you like.
Finesse has just celebrated its 34th birthday and as a family the management team has spent the last three decades perfecting their products and service to achieve an oldfashioned British company in the way they do business at the same time as offering industry leading products and contemporary design.
Managing Director Russell Bridge said: “When you meet the Finesse family you will see that we do business in a more civilised way, listening to your requirements, drawing them up on computer, printing your quotation with a ‘real’ price, and leaving you alone to have a think. Then out of courtesy we will check to see if you would like to proceed. It’s as simple as that. We really would love to show you around and prove to you that a window is definitely not just a window!”
And what’s more - they have a greatly kept secret – their factory showroom! A little oasis tucked away on the Kings Norton Business Estate. Everyone who pops in to see them is always pleasantly surprised. You can step inside a lovely orangery Livin’ Room fitted with the stunning New Wave Door, and see a large range of Palladio doors and of course their own range of windows and doors which they would love to demonstrate to you.

Former Radio 1 DJ Andy Peebles pictured here with the great Ian Botham
With the Ashes due to return to Edgbaston in July Andy Peebles takes a walk down memory lane Tom Dollery was captain of Warwickshire when I was a schoolboy in the 1950s. My uncle lived in Acocks Green and I could never have dreamt that I would spend so much time at Edgbaston in the 1980s 90s. I witnessed Dennis Amiss collect his 100th century and gloried in the exquisite skills of Allan Donald and Brian Lara whilst enjoying local lads like Geoff Humpage and great characters like Gladstone Small. The ground today is a very different place, modernised and thoroughly professional but it has witnessed great moments. David Lloyd’s double century against India, Colin Cowdrey & Peter May in 1957 taking on the West Indian spin twins, Ramadin and Valentine. Not to mention the bespectacled MJK Smith, the last man to play rugby and cricket for England. All part of the rich tapestry of Warwickshire cricket. When Eric Hollies dismissed Don Bradman at the Oval in 1948 it was a Warwickshire player who deprived ‘The Don’ of a Test average of 100. Players of that era could only have dreamt of their team being called the Birmingham Bears!
My favourite Warwickshire story took place at Old Trafford. My fellow commentator liked a flutter and availed himself of generous odds on Neil Smith (son of MJK Smith) top scoring. This Neil did - only to see Graham Lloyd of Lancashire beat his total off the last ball of the match! Enjoy your cricket. Andy Peebles Andy Peebles covered cricket for the BBC for 27 years. He was at Radio One for 13 years and was the last English broadcaster to interview John Lennon, two days before his death.

Three exciting projects that will add value to your house Which project brings the most value to the table you ask? 1. The top spot very fittingly goes to the attic conversion. An attic conversion can add a whopping 25% extra value onto your house, and the best part is you can get really creative with it. With a project this size you need it to be something special, if you lose interest it’ll never get finished so get your creative juices flowing before you land on the final idea. You can have some real fun with this one - what about a home-cinema? 2. Close runner up is the kitchen conversion adding a still impressive (approximate) 15% extra value onto your house. The trick with this one is to keep it relatively simple, in the world of kitchen conversions that doesn’t mean to say cheap, just not outrageous! It’s so very tempting to create the kitchen to die for but buyers won’t be interested in paying more than a certain amount extra for it. 3. While adding in a new bathroom is not the most exciting idea, it just might be the one to revolutionise family life. No more waiting hours to go to the loo while mum has a lovely long bath, plus it captures the special attention of buyers, raising the value of the house by approximately 10%.
So ruminate, ponder and maybe even do a little musing to find that perfect project, it’ll be well worth it when your house value is soaring. Source of data: uk.virginmoney.com/magazine

Can you still find good property deals in Moseley? Daniel Sperber of specialist Moseley letting agent IQ Property gives some insight. Given that as a property investor you make your money on the purchase price and not the sale price, it should be little surprise that I’m often asked ‘can you still find a good property deal’? Since Moseley has seen such fantastic growth in house prices and remains a desirable area both for home ownership and rental, some people I speak to are of the opinion that deals are simply not to be had. I’d like to show you that this perception is wrong and I’ll give you a couple of examples. A one bedroom flat on the Yardley Wood Road sold for £95,000 in November 2007. At this time the property felt quite dated with an old coloured bathroom suite. The very same property sold in December 2014 for just £42,500 with a brand new bathroom. If that is not enough to persuade you, bear in mind that it rent for circa £500 per month and you have an investment which is yielding just over 14%! Another flat, on Hawthorne Gardens, a fantastically spacious property with views over Moseley Golf Course sold in April 2007 for £242,000. The lucky new owner completed on their purchase of the very same property in February 2015 for a staggeringly low £171,000, a drop in price of just over 29%. Now you may be thinking that you would have seen such a drop anyway, since 2007 was the peak of the market. However, I would say that even taking into account the general market conditions these are still both fantastic bargains. To put things into perspective, as a region the West Midlands experienced a drop of merely 5.8% over the same period.
Whether you are a landlord of ours or not, if you’re considering buying in the local area why not get in touch and we can discuss the various options. For more news, views and comment on the local property market please see The Moseley Property Blog.

Get the best out of your lawn this summer Aeration is perfect for giving your lawn a boost this Summer. It reduces soil compaction which leads to an increase in water and air penetration and the more efficient uptake of nutrients, giving you a stronger healthier lawn!
Hollow tine aeration is a process where a machine pulls thousands of cylindrical plugs the size of your little finger out of the lawn. This enables the water from rain or a sprinkler to get right down to the roots of your grass where it is needed most - and has the added benefit of making fertilisation more effective. There are various DIY methods such as hand held aerators or using a garden fork but nothing works as well as a 90kg machine, and a bit of hard work raking up the resulting cores of soil.

Going the extra mile A good service from your wills and probate solicitor is something you should expect. And is something that Judy Dyke from Tyndallwoods is positively evangelical about. But what really makes her tick is the satisfaction she gets from going the extra mile.
Judy Dyke
Tyndallwoods footer for use
Actually, the extra three miles.
The first mile she goes is to ensure that the maximum monetary value is gained from the assets in an estate. Working with specialist valuers who have the knowledge and the honesty to identify assets that may have a surprising cash value. Mile two is to honour all of the possessions of the deceased even if they don’t command a high monetary value, remembering that they will have had a sentimental value. And this is where our wealth of charity shops comes into its own - ensuring that the full life of things is realised at the same time as providing a valuable resource to local people and much needed funds to local charities. And the hat-trick mile is in the support of people doing great things in the world of up-cycling. Take artist Jane Gray’s chickens for example. They are made from donated clothing, many of which articles coming via relatives who have lost loved ones. And this neatly explains why we have a picture of 29 Woodbourne Road Edgbaston Birmingham B17 8BY edgbaston@tyndallwoods.co.uk Car parking on site
Judy the Chicken to illustrate this story. Judy - named after Judy Dyke - is made from the deconstruction of beautiful donated clothing reconstructed in a form of up cycled art. You can see her creator’s exhibition, sponsored by Tyndallwoods, at Harborne Art Gallery this month. See page 11 for more details. If you would like to find out more about Wills and Probate please contact Judy Dyke at Tyndallwoods Solicitors on 0121 693 2222.

History Corner: Moseley Hall I’ve lived in south Birmingham for over twenty years, and in Kings Heath for sixteen. I’ve passed the turning to Moseley Hall Hospital hundreds of times but it wasn’t until a friend of mine recently ended up in a ward there that I ventured down the hill and found to my surprise that the 18th century hall is still standing. This unexpected discovery prompted me to find out more about it. There’s been a grand house on the site since the early 1600s, but the present hall, a Grade II listed stone building with four pairs of columns, dates from 1795. It was rebuilt after riots broke out across Birmingham in 1791, mainly targeting religious dissenters, such as high profile scientist Joseph Priestley. Moseley Hall was just one of the many hotels, chapels, businesses and houses burned in the ‘Priestly Riots.’ Since its restoration, illustrious owners have included the High Sheriff of Worcestershire
and Richard Cadbury MP. It was the Cadbury family that, in a typical show of Victorian altruism, presented the hall to the City of Birmingham in 1891, to be used as a children’s convalescent home. Little remains of the estate’s grounds, landscaped by Humphry Repton in the 18th century. The first road cut through the estate in 1895 and by 1900 much of the parkland had become housing. However, the late 18th century stable block still stands to the right of the hall. These buildings, along with some newer additions, are now run by the NHS and, as well as a general medical community hospital, house specialist rehabilitation services for stroke patients and people with brain injuries. So, unlike me, don’t wait until you have an unhappy reason to have to visit Moseley Hall. Next time you’re travelling between Moseley and Kings Heath, take a few minutes to pop down and witness this hidden relic of past grandeur in our midst. Alexandra Taylor

Moseley property market - in pictures
There has been a dramatic increase in investors and buyers from ‘down south’ – namely London, looking at long term investments with HS2, Times report and the Hospital and Dentist hospital in mind.
James Llewellyn from Rice Chamberlains Estates shares his pictorial view of the local market. Traditional Moseley terraces have increased in value by around 10% over the last year…
People love period homes of all kinds in Moseley - fireplaces and Minton tiles are a must!
James commented “In Moseley we have seen an excellent start to the year for certain sections of the market – in particular the ‘young Moseley professional’. But there is a surprising lack of supply across the whole market place which has led to a pent up demand for certain homes, ending in multibids – something we haven’t seen since before the ‘crash’”

Running your business from home? More people than ever before are running their own business from home - a great way to achieve a good work life balance and be in control of your own destiny. There are many tax benefits to doing so that you might find refreshing. Clare Brown from chartered accountants MHA Bloomer Heaven explains further. For example, did you know that you can claim a proportion of your household costs as a business expense if you use a room in your home to work from? These costs include council tax, heating and lighting, water rates, telephone and broadband and the interest on your mortgage. It is best to seek professional advice regarding the proportion claimed as there could be capital gains tax implications. There are a number of methods for calculating the allowable proportion of the expenses, including a new simple solution to claiming household expenses for sole traders - they are now able to claim a flat rate based on the hours of business use, starting at £10 per month for 25-50 hours. If you are considering starting up a business from home Clare has a few words of advice:
•
Inform your mortgage provider
•
Inform the local council if planning or a license is required
•
Inform your insurance company with particular reference to business assets like computers
If you would like some further advice on setting up or running your own business as a sole trader contact: Clare Brown clare.brown@bloomerheaven.co.uk MHA Bloomer Heaven
•
Inform and register with HMRC - annual tax returns and accounts will be required
•
Begin keeping records of business receipts and expenses
Birmingham, B3 2FD
You may wish to appoint an accountant to carry out some of the administrative burden and ensure you receive the correct advice - this could even save you money in the long run

Life saving electrician Dear Editor, One of your advertisers, Robert Rampton, was working in our home when he discovered a gas leak. I thought he was probably just fussing but we called a gas man out just in case and he was right. Two men showed up to fix the problem in two vans. Meanwhile my husband lacerated his wrist and an artery accidentally on a glass which broke as he was unloading the dishwasher. I rang for an ambulance and went to tell your advertiser we would have to abandon him and leave him in charge of the house. The next thing I knew he was in the kitchen, washing his hands and then really vigorously pressing clean towels round my husband’s arm. He was absolutely brilliant until the emergency services came. I don’t know what the neighbours must have thought, we had about six vans in front of
Sue and David Holmes pictured in their kitchen, right where it all happened
our house for fixing various problems in the end, all thanks to Robert Rampton. I would like to give him credit publicly and I am delighted to say my husband is still alive! Yours Sincerely, Sue Holmes

Question... What the heck to give him? Answer… Time Harry Chapin’s song ‘The Cat’s In The Cradle’ about the relationship of the father to the son which as they grow older becomes reversed is written about and quoted by journalists every Father’s Day. And for good reason. Because there is nothing more valuable than Time. Once spent - it can never be regained. Time given and spent together can create wonderful memories too - captured in photographs to look back on and enjoy. People can walk around shops or sit at their computers using a great deal of their valuable time looking for a gift or present when really there is no better thing they can give than thoughtfulness in finding a creative and enjoyable way of spending this day together, honouring their parent. It’s a rare parent who wouldn’t appreciate knowing that they have been thought about enough that their child wants to spend time with them and makes
the effort to do so on the day set aside to honour them. And the power of words should never be underestimated. A toast acknowledging all that has been done to finance and guide and share; time taken choosing a card - perhaps with shared humour to make him laugh but then with hand written words speaking of love and thanks - goes a very long way. This is a day when being cheesy is okay. After my Dad had died I found all the cards I’d written gathered in a bedside drawer together with photos and other precious items from his past. So, although the shops might suffer if you choose not to spend your precious time buying their goods, give some thought to what he’ll enjoy that creates a memory - even if it’s just to ask him…. “what can I do to make your day a better one, Dad?”

Peter Pan delights audiences at The Blue Coat School The children at The Blue Coat School, Edgbaston recently performed a musical adaptation of Peter Pan, J M Barrie’s story of the boy who wouldn’t grow up. They simply wowed the packed audiences with their energetic acting, singing and dancing. The cast of 150 children all had a brilliant time performing in the school’s newly refurbished auditorium and the principal and supporting actors all gave very confident and characterful portrayals in a two hour magical production that they are unlikely to forget!

Summer party wonderland If you’re looking for fun garden party ideas this summer we’ve got it covered. Moroccan Movie Magic Picture this; Moroccan throws on the lawn, big slouchy pillows to relax on, twinkly fairy lights in the trees and an exclusive screening of an old classic movie on a big projector screen. Once you’ve kitted out the garden it’s nice to be able to get the maximum use out of all the effort you’ve made so this could easily be a regular occasion over the hottest summer nights. If you already own a projector that’s perfect but if you don’t, you could always hire one fairly cheaply. Mad Hatter's Tea party This one’s a classic, if you’re a fan of tea parties there’s no better theme... and yes, mad hats are compulsory! It’s the opportunity to get out your teapots and every cup and saucer you can find, preferably all different shapes and sizes, the madder the better. To create the ambience you’ll need bunting, brightly coloured napkins, plates, tablecloth, and copious amounts of tea and cake. Clocks and playing cards will also make perfect decorations.
Dancing In The Moonlight Dancing is the main event so you’ll need a decent sound system, if you don’t trust the fickle British weather with your favourite speakers then hiring a gazebo or small marquee to house them might be the way to go. Scatter a few chairs around… but not enough for everyone, we want them dancing. Candles on each little table add to the romance of the theme while glow in the dark rocks add a funky twist to the decor and get people in the party spirit. We hope you’re inspired! Tweet or Facebook us with your summer party ideas!

From Webb Ellis in 1823 to a World Cup Trophy Tour in 2015 Excerpt from: “From a New Boy” written by Rupert Brooke in 1904... When first I played I nearly died. The bitter memory still rankles – They formed a scrum with me inside! Some kicked the ball and some my ankles. I did not like the game at all, Yet, after all the harm they’d done me, Whenever I came near the ball, They knocked me down and stood upon me. As many tourists visit the place where The Game began, preparations build to celebrate the Rugby World Cup 2015 and the matches in Birmingham on September 26th and 27th at the Aston Villa Ground. In 1823, when William Webb Ellis with a fine disregard for the rules of football, picked up and ran with the ball trying to evade opposition players, few would know the game would grow to become a popular worldwide sport. In Webb Ellis’s day players at Rugby School wore the school garb of the period – linen shirt with emblem of the school house they were in, breeches and long socks with formal shoes. Velvet caps and tassels signified their school house. With The Game’s popularity booming at the moment especially after the riveting finishing
day of the Six Nations Championship, we look forward to welcoming the RWC’s magnificent Trophy which is touring the area supported by Birmingham Rugby Partnership on the following dates: July 18 North Midlands North Midlands North Midlands

Rowheath Pavilion, a community centre in the heart of Bournville has been nominated - do you have a better suggestion?
DO YOU KNOW A WORTHY CAUSE? Finesse Windows in Kings Norton is donating £10,000 worth of windows to a not for profit organisation. Who wins? You choose! Over the last 34 years Finesse has built strong relationships with many local residents, businesses and charities, putting a strong emphasis on the importance of community. Managing Director Russell Bridge said: “We’ve always tried to make sure that when able, we would contribute to our community and help those in need. Statistically it’s a nearfact that each of us know someone who has been affected by a life threatening illness, and understand how it can completely devastate a family. “We’ve held a number of events and fundraisers to benefit sufferers of disease and illness, in particular Motor Neurone Disease and Leukaemia.
satisfaction we feel when our services improve other people’s lives. Now it’s time for us to help out again! But we need your help. “We want you to SEND US YOUR SUGGESTIONS on which local causes, groups and charities would benefit from a revamp.” Finesse is donating £10,000 worth of windows to a not for profit organisation that will be voted for via its social media pages. Organisations must be within a 10 mile radius of Finesse Windows to qualify. So, if you know a worthy cause you can nominate them by posting a message on Finesse’s Facebook with details of the cause, the leader, and their website.

Moseley Open Gardens Moseley has been relatively untouched for many decades and therefore maintains much of its former beauty, but what about what lies behind these elegant Victorian and Edwardian buildings? Uncloaking the enigma that is over the garden fence, Moseley in bloom invites us into these impressive and expansive private gardens on 27 and 28 June. The Open Gardens Weekend is a great community event and is the main fundraiser for Moseley in Bloom, your involvement will help bring blossoming beauty to the public parts of Moseley too. Friends of Moseley in Bloom Scheme has recently been set up to save this non profit charity and keep enhancing our community, with some support from local businesses they hope to continue to brighten our village. A little help from everyone will go a long way!

Every Little helps Oliver is a happy, lively six year old boy living locally who really needs his community’s support. Oliver was diagnosed a week after his 4th birthday with the fatal life-limiting muscle wasting condition Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. There is no cure but there is still a way you can help. Due to his condition Oliver will also develop breathing problems and need to use an electric chair to carry out his daily living. The cost of the specific electric wheelchair Oliver needs to be able to lead a rewarding life is £25,000 and the NHS are unable to
fund it, so therefore ‘Oliver’s Army’ are now raising funds for the powerchair he needs. Donations have been rolling in already with his family and friends showing massive support hosting fundraising events, but they need as much help as they can get. So if you can spare a few pounds you’ll be making a little boy very happy and giving him the chance of a fulfilling life, all donations are greatly appreciated!
