Food Glorious Food Congratulations to Carters of Moseley! They’ve just been awarded a star in the 2016 Michelin Guide. Birmingham now has five Michelin starred restaurants, more than any other English city outside London, and is fast gaining a reputation as a delicious destination for gastro enthusiasts. Our little corner of Birmingham is particularly special. When Carters was awarded the Good Food Guide Readers’ Restaurant of the Year in 2015, the publication’s editor commented, “I wish every town had a restaurant of this standard.” We’re very lucky having such an acclaimed eatery on our doorstep, but posh nosh isn’t the only dish our neighbourhood has to shout about. There’s a smorgasbord of options to suit every palette and pocket, all within a fifteen minute walk. For that all important first date, when you want to impress without breaking the bank, my advice would be to take a trip to the Mediterranean, courtesy of Byzantium in Kings Heath or La Plancha in Moseley. You can share a tempting selection of tapas before heading to Damascena in Moseley for really good coffee and sticky baklava.
For a more down to earth curry-and-a-pint night, then we couldn’t be more spoilt for choice. The famous Balti Triangle may only be a short taxi ride away, but why bother when you can walk to any number of top quality, good value restaurants just round the corner. Bangladeshi cuisine is especially good, with Sylhet Spice on York Road in Kings Heath and Sweet Chillies on Yardley Wood Road both offering up a mouthwatering range of dishes. But there’s nothing quite like the quick fix of a big bag of chips on that tipsy 2am totter home. Our trusty local takeaways offer a filling faceful of carbs at rock bottom prices into the early hours of the morning. In my fifteen years of living in Kings Heath, I don’t think I’ve ever seen Hi Tide on the High Street closed. Do the staff even sleep? From uptown style to cheap as chips, there’s no doubt about the star quality of eating options served up in Moseley and Kings Heath. by Alexandra Taylor

•
Instead of glittering ornaments and tinsel, Ukrainian Christmas trees are covered with artificial spiders and cobwebs.

In Austrian tradition, St Nicholas’s is accompanied by an evil demon-like creature called Krampus that punishes bad children. Men dressed as Krampus roam the streets during the festive period, frightening people.
•
In Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, people travel to early morning church services during the Christmas period on roller skates. Roads are even cleared to provide worshippers with a safe journey.
•
The earliest recording of a new year celebration is believed to have been in Mesopotamia around 2000 BC, and was probably celebrated around the time of the northward equinox, 20th March.
•
The ancient Egyptians, Phoenicians, and Persians began their new year with the southward equinox around 20th September.
•
The ancient Greeks celebrated the start of the coming year on the winter solstice, around 20th December.

The month of January was invented around 700 BC, when the second King of Rome, Numa Pontilius, added it, along with February, to the calendar.
•
The first time the new year was celebrated on 1st January was in Rome in 153 BC.
•
The Chinese new year occurs on the new moon of the first lunar month, and can fall any time between 21st January and 21st February.
•
The Iranian new year, called Nowruz, is the day containing the exact moment of the northward equinox, which usually occurs on 20th or 21st March.
•
Bengali New Year is celebrated on the 1st of Boishakh, which falls on 14th or 15th April in the Gregorian calendar.
•
The Islamic new year occurs on 1st Muharram, which moves about eleven days earlier each year in relation to the Gregorian calendar. This meant there were two Muslim new years in 2008.

How will the recently introduced changes to legislation affect you as a landlord? Daniel Sperber of specialist Moseley letting agent IQ Property gives some insight. You would have thought that with all the recent publicity, most landlords would by now be aware of the new legislation which came into force at the start of October. However, from the conversations I’m having it has become apparent that for many there still remains some confusion as to exactly what is required. I’ll clarify a few things here which hopefully will put your mind at rest. Firstly, if you are one of our landlords with a property which we manage then you can rest easy as where necessary we have already installed smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. It was reassuring to note that upon closer inspection the majority of the properties we manage were already up to current standard. In the small number of properties where action was required, for the most part it was simply a case of adding an extra smoke alarm. So if you’re not one of our landlords, what is required by law? Well, two things really. One is a smoke alarm on each floor. The second is a carbon monoxide detector in each room which has a solid fuel burning device. Given that most rental properties nowadays (in the city at any rate) do not have open fires, there is no legal requirement for a carbon monoxide detector as it does not apply to gas central heating etc.
which must be provided to tenants in order to serve a Section 21 notice. This probably goes a little beyond the scope of a short magazine article so if you would like more information on this, just get in touch as I have a useful handout I can send you. Daniel Sperber

Bring festive magic into your home The Christmas markets have become a symbol that Christmas has truly arrived, but what is it that makes them so magical? And how do we bring that magic into our homes? Well it’s actually more simple than you might think… 1. That incredible Christmas smell Firstly cinnamon. There’s something so warm and cosy about this smell, you could get some scented candles, or bake cinnamon infused goodies. Then there’s roasted nuts, a quick google search will show you just how easy they are to make yourself to fill your house with that mouth watering, tantalising festive scent. Lastly, we like them big and we like them real, I’m talking of course about your Christmas trees. Fir trees have such an alluring smell, so go make a day of it with the family and choose your ideal tree. 2. Decorations It’s ever so tempting to stick to your routine when it comes to decorating the house, to just pull out that raggedy tinsel you’ve had for twenty years and chuck it over a mirror, but how about this… Green matte tinsel like the branches of a fir tree weaving their way around the house, and hugging up close to them, some white fairy lights with baubles and red bows to top it all off. This is the kind of enticingly cosy retreat you’ll be thankful for after facing the blustery winter elements all day.
3. Christmas cheer It pretty much goes without saying that this is the most important of them all, but you have to remember a get together with the whole family has many opportunities to turn into mayhem. So to make sure the mood stays ‘good-crazy’ and doesn’t slip perilously into ‘bad-crazy’ keep an idyllic festive setting with the classic Christmas songs, and get a sing-a-long going. You’d be surprised who’ll join in after an eggnog or two! Dressing up is sure to diffuse any tension that might still be lingering, and that means novelty onesies for everybody... because if dad is dressed up as a giant Christmas turkey then what can possibly go wrong? by Ruby Watson

The gift that keeps on giving... In the very depths of winter anything to perk up each icy cold day can feel like a small miracle, and it can come in all shapes and sizes. In this case it’s a little miracle involving holly, fairy lights, bows, bells and so much more. The big question we’re asking is; how will you decorate your front garden this Christmas? Don’t answer right away! You have some thinking to do, so we have put together a heat scale to help you make your decision on what kind of Christmas gift you’re going to bestow upon your neighbourhood this year… 1. Mild: An icy chill in the air. Dipping a toe in the festive almost frozen lake, a wreath on the door is the minimal Christmas touch. For many families this is plenty, and it certainly does its part to make the neighbourhood beautiful, but there are those who feel they have more to give, it’s like an unexplainable calling, a destiny that must be fulfilled, to fill every passer by with joy... 2. Medium: A light snow is falling and the trees are white with frost. This is for those of you who’ve done ‘mild’ several years running and feel it’s time to
step up your game. This may include a twinkling little arrangement of fairy lights in the bushes, a Christmas character on the front lawn, or perhaps a lit up festive sign reminding the neighbours to have themselves a merry little Christmas. 3. Intense: A festive blizzard wraps the neighbourhood up in snow like a beautiful gift. This is the all-out ‘American style’ festive explosion. For those not lucky enough to have witnessed this yet, you can expect every inch of the houses to be lit up with coloured lights, entire nativity scenes lit up and moving; reindeers, Christmas trees and of course the festive father himself. Say what you like about these extravagant displays but you know they put a smile on your face. So if you feel it’s worth the electricity bill you’d certainly be contributing to Christmas cheer on a grand scale. by Ruby Watson

A Unique Undertaking I’m sitting with Carrie and Fran in Loco Lounge, talking about death. A little morbid for a Monday afternoon? Well, no actually. Carrie and Fran run ‘A Natural Undertaking’, and their open and positive approach towards the subject has helped them win several accolades, including the title ‘Green Funeral Director’ in this year’s Good Funeral Awards. “We’re so touched that the families we’ve worked with went out of their way to support and nominate us,” says Fran. “That means the world to us. It’s a big challenge, in the middle of the UK’s second biggest city, to try and put a bit of green in everything, but we do what we can.” Carrie was born in Moseley and, apart from a short stint in Manchester, has lived in the area her whole life. Fran came to university in Birmingham twenty four years ago and never left. They’re passionate about the area and supporting other independent businesses. “We work with a number of florists, celebrants, caterers, venues and car hire companies,” says Carrie. “There are so many great, small businesses in Kings Heath and Moseley. It’s very exciting to be a part of that community.” But it’s the bereaved families that are at the heart of what they do. “The service we offer is really personal and creative,” explains
Carrie (left) and Fran met Richard Branson when they became Virgin Startup Ambassadors
Carrie. “Our aim is to empower our clients by giving them all the options. It’s about families taking control and creating something that really reflects the person who has died.” Fran gives some examples. “For one man, his grandchildren helped decorate the coffin and one of them ended up submitting it as part of her GCSE Art portfolio. Another coffin decorating was held in the deceased’s own garden using the flowers she had grown and with the family sitting on camping chairs. Even the dog was there. It was a really beautiful day.” Fran and Carrie also run regular ‘Death Cafes’ where people can come along, drink tea, eat cake and talk about death, helping break down taboos around the subject.

Men At Work “That’s the cell,” says Stuart, indicating a storeroom with a grilled metal security door. “We get put in there if we’re naughty.” Stuart, one of the trustees of the Mosley and Kings Heath Men’s Shed, is giving me a guided tour of their impressive workshop. He’s quick to dispel any misconceptions that it’s a men-only space. “Yes, it is aimed at older people and specifically men, but it’s not exclusive to either of those groups, and several of our members are women. If people can get to us, they’re welcome,” he says. “Even people with physical problems that mean they’re unable to use the equipment, they can supervise the work room, or just come for a chat.” The Men’s Shed movement started in Australia in the mid 1990s in response to concerns over social isolation and depression in older men. It has now spread to dozens of other countries, and there are over 200 sheds in the UK, with more joining the network every week. “It’s a place to spend time, to potter, make something, have a chat,” says Stuart. “Just like your own garden shed, but with a sociable aspect.” The project is an independent charity and has been funded and resourced partly by trustee Larry’s former employer, partly by National Lottery money and partly by the membership.
“All the trustees have put their hands in their pockets,” explains Stuart. “Larry donated the band saw, Paul gave the sanding machine and others bought vices, paint and materials.” The shed is based in The Old Potting Shed behind the Victorian Tea Rooms in Kings Heath Park. Despite inevitable issues with the 19th century building, there’s electricity and running water, essential for that all-important cuppa, as well as nearby parking, although Stuart does admit that the shed itself can be a little hard to find. “You come through the front door of the house, then follow the signs and keep walking until you find us,” he explains. “There’s also a video on our website, plus information about when we’re open and how to get in touch.” by Alexandra Taylor

Home grown talent of the 60s remembered BBC Radio’s Andy Peebles reminisces about the music coming out of Birmingham in the 60s. How much of this rings a bell for you? Fifty years ago The Beatles ruled the airwaves in both Britain and America making Liverpool an epicentre of musical creativity. Not to be outdone, Manchester and Birmingham provided competition for chart places as 1964 and 1965 became a highpoint of the swinging sixties. “Go Now” by the Moody Blues was a smash for Decca Records as the band covered an original version recorded by the American RnB singer Bessie Banks. Carl Wayne & Roy Wood sent me to my local record store for a copy of “I Can Hear The Grass Grow” as The Move became major players on the charts. Jeff Lynne was working with The Idle Race and The Applejacks when “Tell Me When” was all over the radio. The Rockin’ Berries flew the flag for Birmingham and we were amazed by the voice of young Stevie Winwood fronting the Spencer Davis Group. Megan Davies of Solihull band The Applejacks led the cause of feminism playing bass guitar for a band who owed their existence to the Scout and Guide movements. The Band Of Joy was to become the catalyst for Led Zeppelin, maybe the greatest rock band of them all. The club scene was vibrant and Birmingham was a hub of creativity making a major
contribution to pop culture. Duran Duran were a figment of someone’s musical imagination in 1965 as were UB40 and many other great bands from the West Midlands. If you own original recordings by these bands they might be worth a few bob! by Andy Peebles
Andy Peebles covered cricket for the BBC for 27 years. He was at Radio One for 13 years and was the last English broadcaster to interview John Lennon, two days before his death.

Show you care this Christmas all for a good Claus! Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice is urging people to get into the festive spirit and show they care this Christmas. The local charity provides free care for over 1,200 patients, 365 days a year including Christmas Day and over the festive period. This year they have a packed programme in the run up to Christmas as part of their ‘Care at Christmas’ campaign. From the ‘Jingle Bell Jog’ to ‘Treecycling’ (get your tree collected after Christmas for a small donation), Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice is encouraging locals to get involved in the various festive fundraising activities to raise vital funds to support patients and families in Birmingham and Sandwell living with a terminal illness this festive period. Hamish Shilliday, Head of Fundraising said, “For some of our patients this will be their last Christmas so we want to make sure they can enjoy this special time with their loved ones. Christmas is a time to care and we hope that our ‘Care at Christmas’ campaign will urge people to get involved in our festive fundraising activities.” Kicking off the campaign in Santa style is the Jingle Bell Jog. Now in its second
year, the fun-filled family event returns on Sunday 6th December at Kings Heath Park (11am). Participants can spread some Christmas cheer by completing the 2km fun run in their free Santa suit which is provided for all Jingle Bell Joggers (along with a mince pie at the finish line!). Locals can also book to get their Christmas tree recycled as part of the ‘Treecycling’ scheme. For a donation, you can book to have your tree collected from outside your property and recycled at local recycling centres. Over 700 trees were collected last year raising over £8,500 worth of vital funds. And if none of that fits your Christmas wish list their festive Christmas cards can be bought online or in any of their 13 shops across the region.

Keep it Local This Christmas Every December thousands of people flock to Birmingham from all over the country, hoping to find gifts for their loved ones in high profile shopping destinations such as the Frankfurt Christmas Market or the Bullring. But here in Moseley and Kings Heath, we have no need to brave the heaving crowds or pay over-inflated tourist prices in the city centre. By staying close to home this Christmas we can support our local traders and save a few quid into the bargain. Forget the German-style stalls lining New Street this year. Kings Heath and Moseley will both be holding farmers’ markets and craft markets in December - perfect for picking up locally grown veggies for the Christmas table, a beautiful piece of artisan pottery for your sister, or a jar of something tasty for your best mate. The Moseley Christmas Lights will be switched on, with accompanying stalls, activities and entertainment, on Saturday 5th December and the mac Birmingham is also holding craft markets packed with hand made gifts from local designers. Check out our events listings on page 47. If you’re buying on a budget, then nothing can beat our well-stocked charity shops
for a one-off bargain. Books for dad, handbags for aunty Mabel, children’s toys for the little ones and scarves for mum, all at rock bottom prices and with the added bonus of contributing to a good cause. There’s also an abundance of festive family entertainment on your doorstep. Highbury Hall have a selection of Christmas themed events throughout December, from the charity Holly Ball on 5th through to a dinner and carol service on Wednesday 16th. Most local churches and schools will be holding their own services as well, so ask at your nearest one for details. And don’t forget that our great local pubs can be relied upon for a rousing lineup of live music over the holidays and into the new year. With so much happening so close to home, why would you go anywhere else? by Alexandra Taylor

Annie Sloan comes to Moseley Internationally renowned interior designer arrives in Moseley The work of top interior designer Annie Sloan, whose innovative chalk paint and techniques have created a world-wide home décor sensation, has come to Moseley. Annie Sloan is followed with almost cult fervour around the world for her hugely versatile and colourful paint. With 1,500 hundred shops selling it internationally, she is credited with encouraging millions to do their own design projects and for introducing daring new colours into people’s homes. Now the new A Painted Room shop, in Moseley High Street has won a coveted license to distribute Annie Sloan paint and train users in her decorative techniques. Chalk Paint™ is only available through independent shops and it’s quite a challenge to become accepted as a stockist. Gabrielle Hardicker started the shop five months ago with the express purpose of introducing painting techniques to people’s repertoire of home design options. She has long been an enthusiast of Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint.
‘It’s easy to see why it has such a following,’ she says. ‘It can cover any surface without preparation, mistakes are easily altered and it goes a long way. Yet with a little training the results can be quite extraordinary.’ She adds. ‘People coming into the shop have been quite amazed at how you can turn old, tired items of furniture into stunning design pieces.’ Gabrielle, who has been trained by Annie Sloan herself, specialises in up-cycling furniture in the shop and has also been asked to paint customers’ existing furniture - something she is more than happy to do. But her real mission is to give people the skills to do it themselves and she intends to run paint courses from the shop in the New Year. An Annie Sloan mini project pack is available from the shop, an ideal present for Christmas!

Dear Editor, Make a little someone happy this Christmas! 56b Poplar Road, Kings Heath, B14 7AG 0121 444 5874 www.togademustoys.co.uk
Carelessly, I lost my wallet in Kings Heath a couple of weeks ago - it contained several credit and debit cards plus £40. Last week it was put through my letterbox, totally intact in every way, but with no mention of the kind person who did it. I would like to extend my grateful thanks to the anonymous person who kindly returned my lost wallet to me. I have made a donation of £10 to Children's Air Ambulance as my gesture of appreciation.

Is your business safe? What would happen if you lost mental capacity for example through dementia or Alzheimer’s? Who would manage your business? Don’t put your head in the sand - read this if you are a sole trader, in a business partnership, or a director of a business.
The introduction of the MentalTyndallwoods Health Discrimination Act 2013 is aimed at reducing the stigma of mental ill health. The result of the Act is that directors, among others, can no longer be removed from a business on the grounds of poor mental health. This could leave businesses stuck in a position where they cannot function properly and could ultimately close down. A Business Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is the answer, according to Ian Buchanan, local LPA specialist at Tyndallwoods Solicitors in Edgbaston, echoing the views of Denzel Lush, Senior Judge at the Court of Protection. Ian said: “If you lose mental capacity this can have a devastating effect on your business. If cheques need your signature, funds cannot be accessed to pay staff and creditors. It is astonishing how quickly a business can grind to a halt when a person at the top is suddenly unable to work. “When considering a Business LPA it is important to choose a person who you 29 Woodbourne Road Edgbaston Birmingham B17 8BY edgbaston@tyndallwoods.co.uk Car parking on site

completely trust and who would act in your best interests, ultimately standing in your shoes making decisions based on what they think you would do. They would not necessarily be footer for useyou have as your Attorney the same person for personal affairs because of the need for business experience. “The good news is that the legal cost of putting a Business LPA in place is a tax deductible expense and what better thing to invest in than a safety net that will stop your business from suffering even if the worst comes to the worst? “These issues usually affect business owners in the later years of their working life, but it is important to start succession planning many years before you need it. Choosing the right person to be your attorney is not as simple as it may seem. They will need to be fully trusted, have the relevant experience and qualifications needed to continue the business, and have a degree of business sense.”
If you would like more information about a Business LPA please call Ian Buchanan at Tyndallwoods Solicitors on 0121 693 2222.

A touch of Finesse A popular Bournville community centre is set to become an even more attractive facility to local people, after winning a competition to have windows worth £10,000 supplied and fitted free of charge. Trustees and regular users of Rowheath Pavilion are celebrating following their initial nomination for the award, and the enormous social media support from local people that saw them emerge as winners by a landslide in a competition run by Birmingham based window specialists, Finesse. Finesse - one of the region’s leading suppliers of domestic windows - organise the competition every year; inviting customers and followers of their ‘Facebook’ page to nominate worthy causes from local communities around and about their headquarters, at Melchett Road, Kings Norton. Three of those good causes then go forward to a vote, via their Facebook page, with members of the public invited to decide who they think should win the prize of free new windows, and the installation. “Rowheath Pavilion were the overwhelming choice of our customers and local people, and I am so pleased for them,” said Ellie Franklin, Customer Services Director at Finesse.
36
“We will be transforming the upstairs meeting room by providing floor to ceiling windows and a French door, so that the room can used to its full potential. Finesse makes a big virtue of being involved in the local communities near to our HQ, and we want to be able to provide our services to benefit a worthy local cause,” said Ellen. Rowheath Pavilion won the public affection over rivals The Samaritans (Birmingham), and Woodcock Hill Primary School. It is not just a local community centre, but provides a base for many clubs and societies. The window and door designs have been approved by Bournville Village Trust to retain the unique character of the building. Mark Isgrove, manager of Rowheath Pavilion said: “We can’t thank Finesse enough, and we’re all so excited about the windows and the French door being fitted. It is going to make an enormous difference.”

Wild boys! The dawn of the music video, early synth-pop pioneers, and one of the most photogenic bands of the 80s... who else but Duran Duran. It feels cheeky for us brummies to claim this band’s achievements as our own but these streets made them, so of course we’re proud. Inspired by cult classic film ‘Barbarella’ starring Jane Fonda the founding members Nick Rhodes and John Taylor decided to name the band after a character in the movie, Dr Durand Durand. In the film, the doctor is a genius from an unspecified future, inventor of the deadly Positronic Ray, potentially saving / destroying the world! Their humble beginnings in the quirky streets of Birmingham - ever at the forefront of cultural experimentation - reflects in their daring public image and X rated arrival on MTV. Controversial music video for ‘girls on film’ caused such a stir that the BBC banned the video and MTV had to heavily edit it to make it suitable for television. Iconic frontman Simon Le Bon allegedly turned up to his lead vocalist audition wearing pink leopard print leggings, a brown jacket and pointy boots - it’s true what they say about first impressions, (keyboardist) Nick Rhodes’s instant response was “Anyone who looks that stupid... is positively the one”. They
recently earned the title of ‘style icons of the twentieth century’ by Mayor of Milan, one of the most fashionable cities in the world. With their loudly unique style Duran Duran has attracted admiration from across the world, gaining a huge following in America which has since been referred to as “The second British invasion”. Thier music even made a significant impact on Princess Diana who frequently mentioned they were her favourite band. Honoured by her constant appreciation Duran Duran played at her memorial concert in 2006. The (wild) boys are back in town touring UK cities with a date at Birmingham’s brand new and impressive Genting Arena. If you’re one of the lucky ones with tickets to their gig on 4 December, say “Hi” from me!

Kings Heath Collects For Refugee Crisis If you feel helpless in the face of the current major refugee crisis then here’s how you can get involved. Local resident Rosie Gunn and a group of like minded locals have set up a Facebook Group and are really making a difference with their current following of more than 550 people. So the first thing to do is join that group https://www.facebook.com/groups/ Kingsheathcollects/ The most pressing need, of course, is money and you can donate right now at http://www. crowdfunder.co.uk/kings-heath-collects-forrefugee-crisis-1 But there are other extremely specific requirements at different times so it is worth keeping in touch via Facebook so you know when and where to take your donations of baby bibs, mens toiletries, sanitary towels or whatever is needed at the time.
Donated items can also be taken to St Chad’s Sanctuary (see www.stchadssanctuary.com for info) and dropped off at The Old Print Works on Moseley Road.

Kings Heath author becomes instant bestseller Kings Heath author Barbara Copperthwaite has become an instant bestseller, with her novel charting on the first day of publication. Psychological crime thriller Flowers for the Dead was published in September and immediately hit the Top 20 on three separate Amazon best-sellers lists. At the time of writing, the novel is: No 20 in Psychological Thriller; No 20 in Psychological Fiction; and No 20 in Crime, Thriller & Mystery Series. It has Number Three in the company’s Hot New Releases. This is Barbara’s second novel. Her debut, Invisible, went on sale last year and became an Amazon Top Ten best seller. It is still a Kindle Murder bestseller today. Inspiration for Barbara’s novels comes not just from her experience as a journalist, but also her surroundings. Much of her latest novel’s action takes place in Moseley.
What’s the basis of the story in Flowers for the Dead? A serial killer living in Moseley is terrorising women across the country, stalking them, fooling himself that he is in a relationship with them, then killing them off when he realises they don’t love him.
This is not a whodunit but a ‘whydunit’, exploring Adam’s journey from loving infant to the mixed up murderer he has become today. Woven into that is the tense tale of his latest present day ‘love’. Will she survive?
Why did you choose Moseley as the setting? I moved to Kings Heath two years ago, and started to learn about the history of the area. Moseley seemed the perfect location for Adam to live, as I wanted him to be from a good background, and to defy people’s expectations of a serial killer. When I found out about the private park, it really captured my imagination, so I had Adam live in a property with access to it. It’s a beautiful, unexpected part of the city, with fabulous history, so seemed an ideal setting.

Buying with time People in Moseley are being encouraged to share skills and make time for each other. Exchange Time was established in September 2012 and now has over 80 members and almost a thousand hours have been exchanged. For every hour spent helping someone else within the group, members receive one time credit. You can donate hours of skilled, specialist time from DIY to web design or gardening to unskilled time helping local community organisations including Moseley Forum, Highbury Park Friends, Moseley in Bloom and Moseley in Lights. So anyone can get involved. Exchange Time involves local people and community groups coming together to lend each other a helping hand. No money changes hands, the only cost is people’s time. Most of the members are from Moseley, but they also have members from Edgbaston, Selly Oak, Hall Green and Solihull. Time Banking strengthens communities by drawing people together and by developing mutual friendships and support. The Time Bank enables its members to exchange their variety
of skills and abilities that can be put to good use in Moseley. The members can “clock in to help out a neighbour, improve community spaces, or even develop a new local enterprise. Time credits can be used when a member needs a service or assistance from another member, or they can be saved or given to another member who needs help. Time banking started in the USA in the early 1980s; today, 26 countries have active time banks and there are 250 time banks active in the UK. Exchange Time is supported by Moseley Community Development Trust and funded by Barrow Cadbury Trust. Membership of the Time Bank is open to everyone who lives in Moseley and surrounding areas.
