Dear Neighbours, After writing the occasional article here and there for the past 18 months I’m very pleased to introduce myself to you fine folk as the new editor of My Moseley and Kings Heath magazine! As we continue to grow, our incredibly capable managing director, Amy, is pulled in many new directions, so I’m very gratefully and enthusiastically taking the reins. This issue we see the return of Middle Earth Festival, which serves as a symbol of local pride for the astounding beauty right on our doorstep. You will also find some great opportunities to take part in community driven projects bringing neighbours together to create something special. I’m always on the lookout for stories that are of particular interest to our local community, so if you’re passionate about a cause, event, or organisation don’t hesitate to get in touch via email, Twitter or Facebook.

Step into Tolkien’s world Taking a walk around Moseley Bog and Joy’s Wood through the seasons you get an accurate idea of how the rest of Billesley and Kings Heath would have looked hundreds of years ago. Sarehole lies on the north/west edge of what used to be the Forest of Arden also known as The Heart of England Forest. What’s astonishing is how incredibly well preserved this patch of ancient woodland is, and how a small nature reserve on our doorstep inspired our favourite ex resident, J.R.R.Tolkien.
of Fangorn Forest where Merry and Pippin get lost in ‘The Two Towers’ book.
In September we pay homage to Tolkien’s phenomenal literary works with the annual Middle Earth festival at Sarehole Mill, a colourful family weekend event full of fantasy and wonder. We thought our readers would appreciate a round-up of ancient wonders in the hidden paradise down the road, and to see the very vivid reflections of Tolkien’s creations in them, here’s our top three... 1. Wildflowers growing in Joy’s Wood open fields in the summertime, alongside the fields of The Shire with hobbits busily working away.
3. A tunnel formed from trees in Joy’s Wood, beside an identical path in ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ when Frodo asks the hobbits to ‘get off the road!’.
So next time you visit Joy’s Wood and Moseley Bog be on the lookout for more magical Tolkien inspirations that we missed, and let us know what you find!
You’ll be sure to see plenty of Tolkien’s creations at Middle Earth Festival on the weekend of 3rd and 4th of September 2. Moseley Bog - crooked ancient trees, some of the last remaining parts of the old Forest of Arden, next to an artist impression

You Only Die Once Death is a taboo subject and Dying Matters Awareness Week (9-15th May) is intent on breaking that taboo. Last year in Kings Heath a small group met up during Dying Matters Awareness week with the aim of getting people to have the conversations about death that so often get missed. The result was a really positive event, people were able to meet, chat, and to start to dispel some of the myths around end of life care and death itself. Everyone needs to start demanding good end of life care and death provisions, but if they don’t have the big conversations then people aren’t going to know what’s needed until the inevitable happens. This year the group has grown and plans are in place to run events across the entire week in
May with a Death Cafe each day and a Death Disco to close the week, at the Hare and Hounds.

The power of paper Having done a long stint renting houses here there and everywhere, wallpaper has been one of those unreachable wonders for me. Pastel colour paint can only do so much to a room, and it’s never quite enough. You don’t have to transform your home into a Lewis Carroll novel for the sake of being adventurous, but after seeing the potential your walls hold, you may well consider it. Here are some exciting ideas... 1. Mural walls affect me emotionally, because who doesn’t enjoy a good bit of escapism? It’s why we read, it’s why we watch films, it’s why we go on holiday. So, what the idea here is reaching into your mind for the place you most enjoy escaping to and recreating it.
So don’t be afraid to let your walls become something inspirational and vibrant. Be different. Show your personality on your walls; they are your canvas.
2. Marbled-effect gold wallpaper is so chic. Whenever I visit family who’ve left rooms painted white I implore them to stop being so terrified of their own walls. Just take a risk! It’s exciting. Sure, white walls are fresh, but marbled effect gold walls are elegant and classy balanced out with a splash of fun. 3. Cloud wallpaper can be used anywhere of course but I have a philosophy that my bedroom is my cloud. Your cloud is a place for serenity, because you deserve somewhere entirely free from stress. You can share your cloud but make sure the worries of the world get left at the door. Please mention My Moseley & Kings Heath when responding to adverts

One weekend of magic This summer Lunar Festival returns for its third year in the enchanting rural setting of Tanworth in Arden, resting place of Nick Drake, and now home to an established magical odyssey which likes to do things just a little bit differently. Following on from 2015’s breakthrough year, this June’s Lunar is maturing into a wondrous odyssey across one weekend of magic, set in a rural idyll close to the beating heart of the Midlands yet a world away from the hustle and bustle of reality; inspiring, edifying and a little bit different, Lunar is a refreshing vision of what a festival should be like.
Featuring daytime bands, rousing evening shows and late night beats, entwined with guitar driven sounds, there’s a mythical ethos to Lunar blooming from spiritual exploration and adventure. Lunar encapsulates a unique energy which pulsates from the stunning countryside location in which it is set, a sublime weekend which joins the dots across a soundscape of live artists and DJs.
This summer Lunar is bringing a wildly diverse range of artists to perform, from true legends and icons to the new wave of names set to shine. Three generations at Tyndallwoods With the recent appointment of Mike Dyer to the team at Tyndallwoods footer for use Tyndallwoods Solicitors in Edgbaston the firm now boasts three generations flying the family business flag. Headed up by Judy Dyke and and her husband Martin who took up the reins from Judy’s father Ken Dyer, the firm now welcomes their son Mike into the fold. Ken began his law career in 1959 at RM Wood & Son after returning from serving in the army in India and Malaya. Ken had insisted on learning Urdu fluently whilst located in India, which proved to be invaluable to his many Indian clients moving to Birmingham and setting up businesses here. By the time Judy joined the company in 1974 it had merged with another firm and was called Tyndal Mirams Hadfield RM Woods & Son, such a mouthful! This soon became what it is today; Tyndallwoods Solicitors. The business relocated to its current stunning Woodbourne Road location in 2003 and is set to stay there for the foreseeable future.
29 Woodbourne Road Edgbaston Birmingham B17 8BY edgbaston@tyndallwoods.co.uk Car parking on site
Judy, who heads up the wills, probate and trusts team said: “I couldn’t be prouder, to see my son following in my - and my father’s - footsteps. Some of my clients are the grandchildren of my father’s clients and I hope that this continues with Mike in the years to come. “My father was one of Birmingham’s ‘gentleman solicitors’, practicing in all areas of the law as was the norm in his day. “Mike is currently focusing on commercial leases and the sale and purchase of businesses. He advises that if you are undertaking something of this nature you should consult Tyndallwoods prior to finalising Heads of Terms so that no area is missed, thus avoiding mid-transaction delay and additional costs.” If you need to speak to Mike or a member of the team at Tyndallwoods please call 0121 693 2222. www.tyndallwoods.co.uk facebook.com/tyndallwoodssolicitors @Tyndallwoods

We paved paradise, and put up a parking lot Earth Day - April 22 ‘Green’ took on a whole new meaning in our language as we began to understand the significance of our impact on the world and sought out a way to express our changing relationship with it. Earth Day began around the same time this term emerged, in 1970, putting our soon-to-be mass awareness into an official day of recognition and standing firm in the face of naysayers. The 70s was the decade of the effervescent ‘flower child’, protesting was the order of the day but saving the earth was not yet the cause. Smog was merely the smell of industry, success and cultural evolution, not so much a matter of academic curiosity. The founding of Earth Day channeled the energy of the younger generation embracing their political power into its own movement. So how do we celebrate Earth Day? And surely it’s a philosophy that should be encouraged all year round? Well, you can involve yourself in any
way you please. The main idea is passing on invaluable knowledge to the younger generations about the most sustainable way to treat the earth. Set up an event in your community, install solar panels on your roof, any positive change is one step closer to a clean, green future. Earth Day really serves as an annual reminder. It’s a day to reflect on your actions for the past year and what you have done to reduce your carbon footprint. It’s also about considering what kind of positive changes you can make in your daily routine to help provide a safe future for generations to come. People who have successfully held onto the peace, love and positive change motivations of the 60s and 70s are abundant in this cool little corner of the world. So ‘Earth Day’ should be right up your street! Ruby Watson

Blossom Tree - In Japanese culture the Cherry Blossom Tree represents the beauty and fragility of life. A gentle reminder never to take life for granted.
'Find yourself’ in your garden “We often forget that ‘we are nature’. Nature is not something separate from us. So when we say that we have lost our connection to nature, what we are really saying is we’ve lost our connection to ourselves.” - Andy Goldsworthy Our lives have become so reliant on structure and routine that perhaps we need a natural environment that accommodates those needs too. Japanese peace gardens are intended for meditation and reflection, they were originally created for Japan’s ruling elite who couldn’t afford to get their feng shui wrong when so much was resting on their ruling judgements. You probably don’t command armies or pass laws over cities, but sometimes it can really feel like life puts on that much pressure.
Water Feature - The sight and sound of water in Japanese gardens relates metaphorically to the passage of time.
Koi Carp Pond - In Chinese and Japanese culture Koi Carp symbolize good fortune, success, courage, and determination.
From time to time we all have the kind of day that can’t be redeemed by sitting in a messy overgrown lawn. Sometimes what we need is to be filled with child-like wonder, to find our outdoor space a reviving and rejuvenating place
to be. This does not necessarily require a huge garden, and can be done on a modest budget. So pick up a pen and paper, step out into that uninspired space you want to bring back to life, and draw out some plans that could restore your connection to nature, and to yourself.

Fundraising for teenage cancer Moseleyite George Grant has been battling cancer for 8 years. Diagnosed just before his 18th birthday he had to give up a promising career in ballet before graduating from The Royal Ballet School. George went on to gain a degree at Birmingham University and marry his teenage sweetheart, Kelly, a ballet dancer turned Physiotherapist. Since being diagnosed, George, Kelly, friends and family, together with practitioners and clients of the Birmingham Acupuncture and Chiropractic Centre have raised over £25,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust in Birmingham. Whilst Kelly is planning to run the London marathon in April on behalf of the Teenage Cancer Trust, George is raising funds to support research into Brain Tumours after Kelly’s Uncle, the beloved TV magician Paul
Daniels, was suddenly diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour. Please donate generously! Thank you. https://www.justgiving. com/Georgegrantbrain https://www.justgiving.com/ Kellygrantmarathon Cheques to: Teenage Cancer Trust or Brain Tumour Charity cash can be posted to the BAC Centre, 26 Wake Green Road, Moseley, B13 9PA.
Dear Editor, Yes It's that time of year again, when weve just found some remnants of tinsel behind the sofa and our waistlines have stopped ballooning, our thoughts (well mine) turn to the coming festive season. I'm a resident of Kings Heath (and former bluecoat entertainer) and I want to put on a Pantomime in Kings Heath. I'm sure there is a huge amount of talent in the area, and my aim is to put on a panto, with the quality that you get at the Hippodrome (good script, dancers, nice costumes etc) BUT at a price a family can afford (i.e.a family ticket would cost £20).
The pantomime I'm keen to put on is Cinderella. In my opinion it's THE best and appeals to both young and old, also I have written a script that, hopefully, will get some laughs! I require a good creative team and cast, if anyone out there would like to get involved please get in touch. Regards, Matt Franks - Director Gordon Franks Training 0121 333 3001 0776 232 6954

Love your Library It would be easy to assume, in this age of ebooks, wifi and online gaming, that our Victorian public libraries may have outlived their usefulness. But far from being left behind, these fantastic resources are as relevant to our modern communities as they ever have been. “Where else can you find a friendly, open space with free access to information with expert staff who can help you find exactly what you want?” asks Elaine, who works at Kings Heath Library.
one comes on in a popular series like Horrid Henry. They all want to get their hands on it.” Being able to borrow the books for free is a real bonus for cash-strapped parents.
“We have a huge mix of people through the door, of all ages and ethnicities,” adds colleague Sam. “Many come in to use the computers, as well as to borrow books, and we’ve got an extensive local history collection including photos scanned from originals brought in by local people.” You won’t be able to find those on the internet.
During term time, Monday afternoons are Book Time for under fives, where parents can bring in their little ones for stories and songs. During school holidays the library runs occasional craft activity sessions for over fives and there are plans afoot to start a Coder Club, encouraging kids to learn and practice writing computer code.
Other assets include piano music, audio books, maps and a community room, available to hire at reasonable rates, for anyone who would like to put on an event. On Mondays it’s used by the Citizens’ Advice Bureau to give free debt advice, and on Fridays you can make an appointment for a free CV and job-hunting consultation.

Local schools also bring in their kids to explore the library’s resources. “Kids and young people still get very excited about books,” says Elaine, “particularly when the latest

Timber or uPVC? People changing the windows in their home are often faced with the dilemma - should they choose real wood or is uPVC the best option. Advisors at The Harborne Sash Window Company speak to people every day who ask the question; Timber or uPVC, which is better? There is no definitive answer, however, factors such as budget, maintenance and whether you live in a conservation area or not should all be considered.
more cost effective and our sash and casement windows are available in a woodgrain effect to help create the look of timber. Our uPVC windows are guaranteed for up to 12 years and require less maintenance which can be an appealing prospect.”
Mark Jephcott, Managing Director at the Harborne Sash Window Company says: “Timber windows are without doubt more traditional, creating a striking look in period properties and their authenticity is a necessity in many conservation areas. Ours are guaranteed for up to 30 years. Although slightly more expensive than the uPVC option, timber can be painted with your exact choice of colour and if correctly maintained can look their best for many years to come.

Join the Cycle Revolution An article by local resident Nazan Fennell Birmingham has long been an established car city. It required a particular set-up for moving goods around – where car traffic and HGVs dominated the roads. The law adjusted to give way to these vehicles; prioritising uninterrupted ‘traffic flow’. But this came at a cost; four people are injured on the region’s streets every day. Towards cycling safety For Birmingham to become a city ‘fit for cycling’ we need to respond to the evidence that HGVs and construction vehicles are responsible for most cycling casualties. These huge vehicles – machines which were originally built for motorways – are being driven through urban roads by drivers who are unable to see what is around them. This can’t continue in an environment where children are encouraged to walk or cycle to school as way of commute. Currently, the ASL lane places riders directly in vehicle blindspots. We must think about a completely cyclist friendly, protective infrastructure: a route where the person on the bike is comfortably separated from main ‘motor traffic’. Someone who drives an 18 ton truck on urban roads and near children’s schools must also exercise extreme care. Simple policies that work I have been campaigning for improved cycle safety in Birmingham for some years now on behalf of ‘Live in Hope’ charity. To protect all cyclists we are demanding the following things:
• A protective infrastructure: high quality cycling lanes, which are maintained and upgraded, with accident hotspots examined continuously. • Complete A-B cycling routes, without any breaks, suitable for children to commute to school and back. This is very important to encourage a new generation of cyclists, both for individual health and for the sustainability of the city. • Junctions where bikes have priority over the rest of traffic. Danish and Dutch models have already demonstrated the feasibility of putting these in place. • Lower speed limits: traffic calming measures that will help to adjust driver behaviour. • A consistent and fair spending budget allocated to cycling infrastructure. Written by Nazan Fennell (Kings Heath resident) on behalf of Bioregion Birmingham

Birmingham’s tastiest fun run is back! If you’re looking for a challenge with a difference then this charity fun run is definitely one to get your teeth stuck into! Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice’s ‘Chocolate 5K’ gives chocolate lovers the opportunity to burn off the calories whilst indulging in sweet chocolate treats along the way. This year’s event takes place on Saturday 23rd April and starts at 11am from Rowheath Pavilion in Bournville, the original home of chocolate. From Rowheath Pavilion, runners will approach chocolate stations along the 5K course offering a variety of delicious chocolate treats and plenty of water to keep you hydrated. Upon finishing; runners will receive a chocolate medal and gain free entry into the post-run chocolate buffet. The unique fun run attracted 600 participants of all ages last year, raising over £18,500 of vital funds for the Selly Oak based Hospice. It costs around £8million each year to run the Hospice which provides free care and support for terminally ill patients and their families across
Birmingham and Sandwell. There isn’t a minimum sponsorship amount but participants are encouraged to raise as much as they can. Just £25 of sponsorship money pays for a Hospice at Home nurse for an hour. For those who can’t make the fun run in Bournville, don’t fret. There will also be a Chocolate 5K at Sandwell Valley Country Park, West Bromwich (Sunday 3rd July) and at Dorridge Village Hall, Dorridge (Saturday 10th September).
To sign up to the Chocolate 5K in Bournville, visit: https://www.birminghamhospice. org.uk/Event/the-chocolate-5kbournville or call 0121 472 1191.

Protecting your lawn from its enemies Lawns have many enemies including moss, weeds, pets and children (bless those trampoline bare patches and football goal mouths). But have you heard of its potentially most destructive enemy of all? Phil Harrison of Lawnscience explains: “Chafer Grubs are the larvae of the Chafer Beetle, commonly known as the May Bug, an infestation of these beetles can devastate a lawn. “Towards the end of May adult beetles emerge, lay their eggs in our lawns then disappear. After a couple of weeks, the eggs hatch and the grubs begin feeding… on the roots of our lawns! Yellow patches appear and areas of the lawn wither and die.
“To compound this damage, the beetles are a great source of protein for local wildlife; badgers, foxes, hedgehogs and birds. The pecking and ripping of the turf is destructive and unsightly with the damage continuing all summer and into autumn. “If you suspect your lawn may be susceptible a preventative treatment can be applied at the correct time of year. If your lawn needs repair, for patching re-seeding or a complete lawn renovation we can help.”

Cricket season is back! Holding the title of the second most popular sport in the world shows how eager we are (as a predominantly cold and wet country) to get back into the game. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that over at Edgbaston Stadium they’re gearing up for a 2016 to remember, major match tickets are on sale now - act fast if you don’t want to miss out! But It’s not just the adults who have all the fun, cricket is massively popular with kids and there are plenty of opportunities for them to discover this great sport in the local area. Moseley Ashfield Cricket Club not only caters to aspiring young athletes but also holds memories for star cricketer Moeen Ali who discovered his passion for cricket there - and often goes back to visit the club. Kings Heath Cricket Club has been described as ‘a seriously impressive club’ by the Warwickshire Cricket board, with its excellent facilities it’s another great choice of venue for learning and generally partaking in cricket. Going to the cricket is such an exhilarating experience when you really commit to the occasion. For those eager few who are just out for a great time but aren’t so savvy on what the game’s about, all you need is a bit of the lingo. We’ve put together some cricket terminology that should help you out - or at least get a few laughs:
Cart-wheeling stump - When the ball hits a stump with enough force to cause it flip end-over-end before landing. Cherry - Name for the ball, usually used by Australians. Daisy cutter - When a ball rolls along the pitch or bounces more than two times. Flash - to wield the bat aggressively. Rabbit - a particularly incompetent batsman. Be sure to tweet us any funny (or helpful) ones we missed out! Written by Ruby Watson
Find out more about your local clubs here: http://moseleyashfield. play-cricket.com/ http://kingsheath.play-cricket.com/ http://www.edgbaston.com/
Baggy Green - Green cricket cap that’s been worn by Australian test match cricketers since around the turn of the 20thC.

Here comes the sun If the prospect of summer means the need for new prescription sunglasses to you then read on because Pabari Optician in Moseley has something exciting in store for you. At a glance Xperio Polarising look like everyday sunglasses but these are more than just another sun lens. They do it all. They eliminate glare, enhance colour and visual contrast, so they’re perfect for driving and sports - any outdoor activities. And right now you can get Experio Polarising lenses half price at Pabari, saving 50% off Xperio Polarising lenses when you buy Crizal lenses. If you’re unusually sensitive to light they really help, as they damp down blinding glare and reflections leaving you free to enjoy the sunshine. They give protection from UV that’s unmatched in everyday lenses, with an Eye-Sun Protection Factor of 50+. They’re very resistant to scratches too as they include a special antiscratch coating that makes them up to three times more resistant to scratches than competing polarising lenses.
46
UV Protection is important. We all know that our skin needs to be protected from UV radiation, but our eyes need it even more. The UV-A and UV-B rays that make up UV light can have serious long and short-term effects and can lead to an increased risk of skin cancer. Children are particularly at risk from UV. It has been reliably estimated that the retina (the back of the eye) has received 80% of our lifetime’s exposure by the time we reach adulthood. We take great care to ensure that our children’s skin is protected from the dangers of UV and the eyes are just as important. See better, whatever your prescription, whatever you do, Xperio Polarising lenses are an option with any Essilor lens, including Varilux, the word’s leading varifocal lens marque.

2016 winners of the FARMA Farmers’ Market of the Year... ...Awarded to Moseley Farmers’ Market! The judge said: “The quality, freshness, variety and value of the produce are obvious to anyone attending the market. The stalls’ presentation is excellent. They have every right to be proud of what they offer.” Moseley Farmers’ Market runs on the last Saturday of every month and offers an amazing 55-65 stalls of incredible variety. The market is a not-for-profit organisation and so has put more than £45,500 back into the community. It is run by volunteers “by the community for the community”. The judging panel highlighted the exceptional work of Moseley Farmers’ Market, which narrowly missed out on the Retail Champion
award this year. The judging panel loved the passion, the quality of stalls and the way it acts as a true ambassador for farmers’ markets. For more details about the Moseley Farmers’ Market visit www.moseleyfarmersmarket.org.uk

Open your garden with Moseley in Bloom Moseley in Bloom’s Open Gardens will take place on 25 and 26 June this year and you are invited to open your garden to the public during the event. It doesn’t have to be enormous, perfect or pristine - just well loved. Everyone sees beauty in different things so a wide range of gardens is needed. There would be little work for you to do on the day – simply be around to answer questions and enjoy others admiring your hard work. Moseley in Bloom has won the Heart of England in Bloom Gold award for the best
Urban Community for the 8th time. You can help make it 9!
If you are interested in opening your garden or volunteering over the weekend please contact Amy on amy1704@hotmail.co.uk or 07982 714530.
Songs of the River Rea Local songwriter is to release a new album inspired by living alongside Birmingham’s ‘hidden’ river. Katy Rose Bennett has been creating songs since she can remember. Born and raised in rural Oxfordshire she has lived in Birmingham for the last decade. This new album is a collection of songs which tell stories of life in the UK’s second city inspired by living alongside the River Rea –
songs on the themes of connection, love, loss, mental fragility, parenthood and memory. Alongside Katy and Joe, the album features a fine band of players including Phill Ward, Hannah Rhodes, Mike Monaghan and Robin Bennett.
The album will be launched at a special gig on 24th April 2016, 7.30pm at The Kitchen Garden Café in Kings Heath. Entry costs £10 and includes a copy of the new album. See www.katyrosebennett. wordpress.com for details.
