Making the most of Moseley It’s that time again! Moseley Festival, with it’s eclectic mix of talks, gigs, stalls, workshops, special offers, taster sessions, exhibitions and competitions, will be taking over the village from 1st to 10th July. The jewel in its crown is Mostly Jazz, Funk and Soul Festival which brings some seriously big names, and crowds, to our neighbourhood. One stage will be hosting acts such as De La Soul, Booker T, Craig Charles and Grandmaster Flash, while the other stage showcases up and coming performers. There will also be films, artist talks, music workshops, dance performances, live comedy and spoken word performances. To keep your energy up, there’s a wide range of food available - fill up with pizza, falafel, Caribbean dishes and delightfully naughty cakes, then wash it all down with ale, lager or a fancy cocktail. You’re welcome to bring your own picnic, but make sure you stick to soft drinks and decant your olives into plastic tubs - there’s a strict ‘no alcohol, no glass’ policy and you risk getting your delicacies confiscated on the door. Moseley Park is the perfect setting for a summer festival, with its gentle grassy slopes down to the stage area, and the lake shimmering behind. If you’d like year round access to its eleven acres of tranquility, then a festival ticket can get you a £10 discount on annual membership. There are various ticket choices - one-day, twoday or three-day entry as well as adult, child and family options. You can either buy online or avoid a booking fee by going down in person to the office on Fazeley Street before 9th July. If you’re deaf or disabled, you can also apply for a free wristband for a personal assistant. by Alexandra Taylor Details correct at time of going to press, check the following websites for up to date information. Getting Kinky Bassist John Dalton played his first live gig with The Kinks on York Road in Kings Heath in 1966. Fifty years later he’s returning with The Kast Off Kinks to bring the band’s hits back to Birmingham. But while the two events may share a location, songs and musicians, it’ll be a very different experience for John. “Back then it happened so quickly,” he explains. “I met the band on Thursday, had Friday to learn the music and then played with them on Saturday night. I didn’t know any Kinks songs before that, but the set was only about thirty minutes and also included some rock and roll classics, so I just about got through it! Nowadays we normally play for around two hours and we know the numbers really well.”
“There’s also a lot more humour and entertainment in the show than in the 1960s.” While John might not have been familiar with the now-famous songs, he was no stranger to Birmingham. “My dad’s family were brought up in Balsall Heath and I used to spend my summer holidays there. We went to the Lickey Hills, Cannon Hill Park and saw the cricket at Edgbaston. It was really nice to be coming back to play.” John toured the world with the Kinks for seven years at the height of their fame and, after a long and successful musical career, joined The Kast Off Kinks in 1994, along
with other ex-Kinks Mick Avory, Ian Gibbons and Dave Clarke. “The four of us get on so well and we’re having such a good time. I still get as much of a kick out of playing ‘You Really Got Me’ as I did that first time in 1966.” John still pinches himself at how lucky he’s been. “I’ve played in some great bands throughout my career and worked with a really good bunch of fellow musicians. To still be playing at this age, enjoying myself so much and coming back to where it all started is unbelievable. I consider myself very privileged.” The Kast Off Kinks will be headlining at Kinks Heath Fest on 12th June. The festival will also include local musicians playing their favourite Kinks songs and a ‘Dedicated Follower of Fashion’ costume competition. by Alexandra Taylor

Anyone for tennis? With this year’s Wimbledon Tennis Championship kicking off on 27th June, the country will be gripped by its annual bout of tennis fever. But there’s no need to travel to London or spend two weeks glued to the television to get your tennis fix. Here in south Birmingham we’re spoilt for choice, whether you’d rather watch others sweat or pick up a racket yourself. The Edgbaston Priory Club hosts one of the most prestigious pre-Wimbledon tournaments, the Aegon Classic. Starting on 11th June, many of the world’s top stars will be competing. Take a picnic and the kids and enjoy a whole day of high class tennis for as little as £10 for a full price adult ticket in the early stages of the competition. To play yourself, you can use the courts in Cannon Hill Park for free - just book online at birminghamparktennis.co.uk. Birmingham Park Tennis also offers group coaching, including sessions for ladies only, children, people with learning difficulties and people who use wheelchairs from as little as £2.50 a session. They also run competitions and leagues. You can also book a court and Billesley Indoor Tennis Centre, or make new friends at one of their daily community tennis sessions - no planning required, just turn up and play for just £6.90 per adult for a three hour session.

Time to update your will? As we move into the holiday season for many people it is a time to consider updating their Wills. Judy Dyke at Edgbaston based Tyndallwoods Solicitors is more than happy to offer this service.
However, according to Judy, this is also sadly a time of year when many people are involved in the administration of an estate. Judy advises: “Before booking the funeral do make sure that there are sufficient funds in a bank or building society that can be released to meet the costs incurred. “Bear in mind that if you expect a large number of guests at the crematorium you can ask the funeral directors to arrange an extended time for the service. “It is useful to remember the concept of the ‘Executors’ Year’ in making significant progress in the administration of an estate. Undue pressure may lead to errors. “And finally, consider placing Section 27 Trustee Act Notices to give the executors appropriate protection.”

Nettles...
they’re not all that bad really To make a soup you will need: A large saucepan of nettle tops 3 tbsp butter 3 tbsp plain flour 1 ltr vegetable stock 150ml cream Plenty of salt and pepper
Do you feel a little jaded after spending the winter indoors wrapped up against the cold? Now is the time to think about boosting your energy. But don’t visit your pharmacy – go into your garden instead. We are going to pick some nettles! Nettles were a very important crop in the past. They were not only used as a medicine, they were also made into material, rope and used for dying (they make a lovely yellow/ green dye). They contain useful amounts of iron and calcium and at this time of year nettles are young and tender and can be used to make a restorative tea and a lovely soup.
Method Wearing long rubber gloves, collect nettle tops and, if necessary wash and pick through them. You will need a good amount as they wilt down, very much like spinach. Cook the rinsed nettles without adding any more water until thoroughly softened, (as soon as you heat the nettles the sting disappears). Drain off all liquid thoroughly and add this to your stock. Make a roux by melting the butter in a saucepan and slowly adding in the flour. Keep stirring over a low heat for 2 minutes
24
and then begin to slowly add the stock mixture. Put the roux and nettles in a liquidizer and blitz until smooth. Season to taste. To make nettle tea you will need: Fill your cup with nettle tops having bruised them by squeezing them first. Then pour on boiling water and leave to steep until you have a good colour. Sweeten to taste if that’s your choice – but no milk please! Two cups a day will give you a good amount of iron and calcium. Jenny Jones is a retired fellow of The National Institute of Medical Herbalists. After practicing for 30 years she become a Trustee of the Herb Society and helped train future herbalists as a tutor at the University of Central Lancashire. Jenny has agreed to write more of her wonderful articles for our magazine.

This Old House
Nestled amongst the trees and formal beds of Kings Heath Park is a building known only as The House. Built in 1832, it still features the tiled hallway and stained glass windows of an impressive private residence.
Many local strollers, joggers and dog walkers regularly visit the Victorian Tea Rooms on the ground floor, but do they know what else goes on in the former bedrooms, drawing rooms and parlours, now owned by the city council? Regular readers of My Moseley and Kings Heath will already be familiar with Kings Heath Shed and Thrive, community organisations that operate from The House as paying tenants. But it’s council services that occupy the majority of the rooms. On the ground floor is the Park Ranger service, whose dedicated team oversee the health and wellbeing of our local parks. They monitor wildlife, ensure the park is a safe for all visitors, organise school visits, deliver training to park volunteers and put on a wide variety of public events. Feel free to pop in to report problems, ask questions
or pick up any of the informative leaflets on display. Also on the ground floor is a fully kitted-out classroom, available for anyone to hire. Local colleges use it, as does the Council’s Horticultural Training Centre, whose offices are just above, up the curving Victorian staircase. The second floor offices, not open to the public, are where the staff of the Parks Management service carry out the operational functions of the parks. This includes managing contractors, liaising with community organisations and monitoring park refurbishment plans. So next time you’re spreading your picnic blanket, browsing in the nursery or enjoying some tea and cake, remember the people toiling away in The House, making sure our parks continue to be perfect places to relax. Gary Newbon
In an interview with Julia Parsons
A life in sport journalism
This journalist, interviewer and broadcaster epitomizes ‘sports’ and ‘football’. He’s lived and breathed it for the last 52 years of which 48 have been in TV but interestingly in our discussion he revealed it was his relationship with the late Brian Clough that meant a great deal and a memorable incident in 1999 with Alex Ferguson, manager of Manchester United. Gary tells the story: “They were losing 1-0 to Bayern Munich in Barcelona but in the stoppages Man U scored twice and extraordinarily - won. I interviewed Alex straight after the end of the match and I’d say he was in a state of shock - his mind had gone blank. He shook his head and said… ‘Football, bloody hell’. That has gone down into legend.” Gary lives in Solihull, having raised his family here – a daughter who has followed him into journalism and twin boys – all with successful careers. He met his wife Katie 42 years ago in the newsroom at ATV. There’s plenty on the internet about Gary’s distinguished career from newspapers in Fleet Street to becoming Deputy Head of ITV sport and Controller of Sport for Central Television for 23 years and there are many top familiar names who can thank him for being the catalyst for their career beginnings. Ask Gary about his opinion on a youngster today following in his career footsteps and he shakes his head. It’s so different now with the demise of newspapers and regional TV. But he recommends work experience and attitude - accepting being the gofer
and being resourceful. Taking media studies courses can lead to disappointment. It’s a tough world to get into now.
He feels football has changed, affected by the market forces created by money - thanks to TV fees and demanding sports agents. Now in his early 70s, Gary is undeterred at the travelling required to get to work at Sky Sports. He is currently presenting Sporting Heroes, a series in which Gary interviews in-depth, the legends of sport. Does he want to retire? - does he heck! He loves his work and life is good whilst he can continue in the sports world he’s passionate about. An extended version of this article is available at our online site: www.swanpublishing.org

Parks for play “Parks for Play started over ten years ago,” explains Laura Watts. “I was involved with an organisation called Dens of Equality, which promotes inclusion through leisure, learning and play. A group of local parents with children on the autism spectrum were having problems accessing existing leisure services and asked us to set something up with them. We began with play schemes in the community and within two years we were running sessions in Kings Heath Park.” “Play is absolutely intrinsic and essential for children’s development,” says Laura. “Research has demonstrated myriads of positive outcomes - cognitive, behavioural, social. Creativity is so often eroded rather than nurtured, but we do what we can to redress that balance.” Inclusivity is at the heart of what they do. “Everyone is on wheels at some point in their life. If you design something around those with the greatest need, it works for everyone.” The smart mats that Parks for Play use to make grass accessible to wheelchair users don’t stop anyone else running around. The accessible toilets they hired for the children were also used by older park users because they didn’t have steps, unlike the park’s permanent facilities. “It’s about making sure no one is excluded,” says Laura. Laura tells me that 40% of parents with disabled children are single, compared to the national average for all children of 25%. They need reliable, consistant support services to enable them to go to work. As well as holiday play schemes and outreach programmes, Parks for Play runs the only specialised after school club in the UK, based at Uffculme School on Queensbridge
Road. “I’m really proud of it, but it’s also really scary. We refuse to charge more than an ordinary club although it requires a lot more staff, so we have to raise over £1000 in funding every week to keep it going. It’s a daunting responsibility, knowing that if we don’t, many parents would have to give up their jobs.” Isolation is another issue for many parents. “If your child goes to a special school, you don’t develop that network of other local families. That’s why, for me, the biggest delight has been seeing people who live round the corner from each other meet for the first time and start to support each other. That’s the real success of what we do.” by Alexandra Taylor
To find out more about Parks for Play, visit their website: www.parks4play.org email info@parks4play.org or call 0121 441 4682.

Gardening for happiness Ask any gardener why they love what they do and most will say they enjoy being outside in the fresh air, getting exercise and tending to their plants – a kind of ‘natural high’.
But there is science behind this feeling as this enjoyable, yet rewarding physical activity, releases endorphins which trigger a positive feeling in the body. It’s also one of the key benefits of gardening that leading disability charity Thrive cite as a factor in helping people who come to its Birmingham gardens. Since 1978 Thrive has used gardening to bring positive changes to the lives of people living with mental ill health, or those who are isolated, disadvantaged or vulnerable in a process known as Social and Therapeutic Horticulture (STH). Alyson Chorley from Thrive said: “For us, gardening is much more than a leisure activity. We create a personal plan for every individual that comes to Thrive. For someone who has had a stroke their goal may be to improve their speech by being with others in a relaxed environment; for someone with a learning disability it could lead to their first ever qualification as we are a City and Guilds approved training centre.”
If you are interested in Thrive or know someone who could benefit from the charities services in Kings Heath Park where the gardening takes place in the stunning TV gardens contact Amanda Fields, on: 0121 293 4531 or www.thrive.org.uk where there are also opportunities to volunteer or fundraise.
