Welcome friends & neighbours to our spring edition. This issue we have a Human of Solihull whose contribution to life in our community is inspiring as well as delicious. June Williams’ husband Keith wrote to me about her devotion to a vision she had. If you or someone you know would like a copy but isn’t within our distribution area, get in touch and if I can, I’ll always drop a magazine over to them. In the meantime, copies can usually be found on the Information Desk in Touchwood, The Manor House on the High Street, Solihull, and Ideal Dry Cleaners, Knowle & Dorridge. Until next time...

One weekend of magic This summer Lunar Festival returns for its third year in the enchanting rural setting of Tanworth in Arden, resting place of Nick Drake, and now home to an established magical odyssey which likes to do things just a little bit differently. Following on from 2015’s breakthrough year, this June’s Lunar is maturing into a wondrous odyssey across one weekend of magic, set in a rural idyll close to the beating heart of the Midlands yet a world away from the hustle and bustle of reality; inspiring, edifying and a little bit different, Lunar is a refreshing vision of what a festival should be like.
Featuring daytime bands, rousing evening shows and late night beats, entwined with guitar driven sounds, there’s a mythical ethos to Lunar blooming from spiritual exploration and adventure. Lunar encapsulates a unique energy which pulsates from the stunning countryside location in which it is set, a sublime weekend which joins the dots across a soundscape of live artists and DJs.
This summer Lunar is bringing a wildly diverse range of artists to perform, from true legends and icons to the new wave of names set to shine. Super Furry Animals, Television, Mercury Rev, Badly Drawn Boy, The Zombies, Matt Berry & The Maypoles, Os Mutantes are just a few of the high profile names confirmed for this years event. As day turns to night, Lunar Festival will become a vibrant party with a heady mix of the finest Midlands club nights such as Magic Door, Swingamajig, Leftfoot, This is Tmrw, sitting aside the internationally renowned Psychemagik, Craig Charles and Horse Meat Disco.
Lunar Festival: Fri 3rd – Sun 5th June 2016 at Umberslade Farm Park, Butts Ln, Tanworth in Arden, Warwickshire B94 5AE Full line-up & tickets available at www.lunarfest.co.uk/ticket-info

Meat... The Lyons of Knowle How many people can say they are working in a business, together with their siblings, started by their great-grandfather and all still living in the same village? John, David and Peter Lyons are among the few. Their great-grandfather John Lyons began as a butcher in Station Road, Knowle in 1903. The present shop is named after his grandson Eric and renowned for its excellent traditionally made pies as well as personal service. Enter the immaculate shop, and you’ll be cheerfully greeted by at least one of the brothers. Within a few minutes of conversation with John Lyons, namesake and great grandson of the founder, you get how steeped in the history of Knowle this family are. Sydney Bryson, John’s uncle was a founding member of The Knowle Society in 1962 and also editor of the Knowle Parish Magazine for decades. Their father Eric was a keen Rotarian involved in many of the town’s community activities, John’s brother Peter is in the Roundtable and John himself up to a few years ago was a member of Old Sils’ hockey team and is involved now with the Local History Society, David is on the Village Hall committee. The friends the lads grew up with like The Curtis family, had 3 shops and businesses on Knowle High Street including the record shop - very popular on a Saturday!
One of their favourite places in the summer was the lido near The Greswolde Hotel’s present car park. Eric Lyons was enlisted in the Catterick Regiment during WW2. He was joined there by two famous legendary footballers, Dixie Dean and Tommy Bamford. Each regiment had their own football team and with Eric in goal theirs was a formidable force. This family, who so many Knowle residents have grown up with, are a true rarity in today’s transient society - working together, continuing on a business through generations, remaining and participating in a much loved village’s history.

RIP buy to let? How will the increase in Stamp Duty announced in the budget last month affect you? Amanda Holden, head of the residential team at The Wilkes Partnership discusses the potential impact. Firstly, says Amanda, “This issue does not only affect people purchasing buy to let properties, and does not affect all buy to lets. It is targeting individuals who own two or more residential properties and who are not replacing their main residence. Properties in the lower price bracket of £40,000 to £125,000 will now incur a Stamp Duty Land Tax payment of 3% for individuals who, at the end of the day of completion, own more than one residential property and are not replacing their main residence. In addition these people also face a Stamp Duty Land Tax liability at much greater rates for properties in the higher price bands too. This change will have a huge impact on the buy to let market and those looking to buy a second home. The government’s stated intention is to support home ownership and first time buyers. Owning two or more properties has a consequence for first time buyers being able to get themselves on to the property ladder as it reduces the supply of available housing stock. Amanda comments: “It remains to be seen whether those able to do so will continue to buy property for investment purposes as the higher rate may have too big an effect on the profitability of the deal.’ “However this could mean that buyers negotiate harder on the purchase price if they are facing a higher tax bill.”
10
Amanda continues: “My advice given these new circumstances would be to involve your solicitors from as early as possible in the process. They will be able to advise you on all the costs related to buying a particular property based on your individual circumstances to enable you to negotiate the purchase price and make a fully informed decision.” The Wilkes Partnership offer a free conveyancing estimate and speaking to them early will not lead to higher solicitor fees, but could save you money in the long run.
For further information and/or a conveyancing estimate please contact Amanda Holden at The Wilkes Partnership on 0121 733 8000 or aholden@wilkes.co.uk.

Solihull’s Shopmobility Since the late 1990s Solihull Shopmobility has provided a service to anyone who finds it difficult getting around because of age, illness, injury or any reason that means movement is compromised. The service provides free wheelchairs and mobility scooters to enable users of all ages to have access to town centre shops, services, and businesses including the hospital. Over 1000 people have registered to use the service. Initially funding came from grants given by Mell Square and local organisations like The Rotary but mainly Solihull Council which paid for staff, equipment maintenance, purchase of updated equipment, insurance and miscellany. However, since March 2015 the existence of Shopmobility has hung in the balance … Solihull Council needing to cutback withdrew their grant and the Drury Lane service point had to shut. Touchwood provide the day to day service from the Orange Car Park but do not pay running costs which are the responsibility of Shopmobility, a registered charity. With the popularity of the service the ability to find funding to cover costs is a constant challenge threatening the ability of the service to continue. These are some of the feelings from those who have benefited from this wonderful service. A lady suffering from rheumatoid arthritis says “It is a lifeline for me…the independence frees me from some of the restrictions of my illness”. Mr Phillips from Knowle leaves us in no doubt about his feelings... “it gives me a temporary element of normality”. Something echoed by many, especially younger users. The Disabled Business Forum says “Disabled
customers spend £212 billion in the UK annually, assisted by Shopmobility Services. Just to replace a chair’s battery costs over £400. Shopmobility Solihull can’t keep the service going without grants, legacies and sponsorships. And the loss will make Solihull a poorer and less happy place for those already struggling. Would you be wonderful and help to make a difference with a grant no matter how small, a legacy or by sponsoring a wheelchair or scooter?
If you can, your contribution will be publically recognised. For further information email funding@solihullshopmoiblity.org

Timber or uPVC? People changing the windows in their home are often faced with the dilemma - should they choose real wood or is uPVC the best option. Advisors at The Harborne Sash Window Company speak to people every day who ask the question; Timber or uPVC, which is better? There is no definitive answer, however, factors such as budget, maintenance and whether you live in a conservation area or not should all be considered.
more cost effective and our sash and casement windows are available in a woodgrain effect to help create the look of timber. Our uPVC windows are guaranteed for up to 12 years and require less maintenance which can be an appealing prospect.”
Mark Jephcott, Managing Director at the Harborne Sash Window Company says: “Timber windows are without doubt more traditional, creating a striking look in period properties and their authenticity is a necessity in many conservation areas. Ours are guaranteed for up to 30 years. Although slightly more expensive than the uPVC option, timber can be painted with your exact choice of colour and if correctly maintained can look their best for many years to come.

A Knight of Knowle “Twice nightly” was a nickname given to Alan Knightley by his friends when he was drafted into the navy in 1942. Ask Alan to explain why and he becomes coy – “Well, what do you think?” Alan’s story began in 1925, born in the family home in Lodge Rd, Knowle. At 17 Alan joined the local Home Guards earning a stripe. He enlisted together with six friends as soon as he could becoming a telegraphist in the Royal Navy. Once drafted to a ship - motor torpedo boats or MTBs as Alan calls them - they went out in a flotilla of three every night near Le Havre, France to get “shot up”. Alan recalls the many times all hands were on deck bailing water furiously to keep afloat. “But one night we were rammed by a German E boat. I was trapped in the wireless cabin - with the water rushing in. I can’t remember how I did it but I got out and was picked up out of the water after many hours, nearly naked, clinging to timber the size of a small table top. Not only were we machine-gunned by the enemy whilst in the water, one of our own boats unknowingly ploughed through the wreckage in the dark of the night. Only the Captain and I survived”. In 1944 Alan was re-assigned to a mine sweeper following the Americans to Omaha Beach. It was D-Day. They went out the night before sweeping the channel to clear the mines away. “I was in the wireless cabin furiously decoding messages and getting them to the skipper. We escorted the
Americans into Omaha Beach. They got slaughtered”…Alan shakes his head sadly. “It’s not something I like to talk about”, he says. Alan married his wife Winifred in 1949 - he’d known her all his life as she too had grown up in Knowle. We feel privileged that someone so valiant who put his life on the line to keep our country safe, lives amongst us and that Knowle is and always has been, Alan Knightley’s safe harbour.

Vintage Solihull Here are two images of the same location on what was Warwick Road but is now the Old Warwick Road - altered when the M42 was built. Demand for bricks came after the railway station was built and housing development flourished. There were several brickworks around the borough and as you can see from the illustration, the one in Warwick Road was a large one. It was eventually filled in and blocks of flats called Riverside Drive were built on the site. Do you remember the old brickworks? If you have any photos to share we’d love to see them.

Vitamin D - is it really worth taking? The simple answer is … yes! It is vitally important for our health. Dr Louise Newson Vitamin D is an essential vitamin for healthy growth, strong bones and muscles but is not stored for long in our bodies. There is evidence it may also help to prevent other diseases cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Oily fish, eggs and other foods contain vitamin D but the majority of our need for it is created by our bodies when we are exposed to sunlight. Current Department of Health recommendations are for half an hour, 2-3 times a week, ideally when the sun is overhead. Not easy to achieve in the UK and for that reason many of my patients, are found to have low levels of Vitamin D. Diagnosis is by a blood test. Particular groups of people have a higher risk of low Vitamin D levels so it is now recommended that supplements of 10 μg (400IU) be taken daily, either as a tablet or drops. Those most susceptible are: • Any woman, breastfeeding or pregnant • Children from six months to five years old • Adults over 65 years of age • People with low or no exposure to the sun. e.g. those who cover their skin for cultural reasons; the housebound confined indoors for long periods
30
• People who have darker skin African, African-Caribbean or South Asian because they can not naturally create enough Vitamin D Symptoms caused by low levels of Vitamin D are hard to spot. There may be general tiredness or aches which improve with treatment. If Vitamin D deficiency isn’t treated, children can develop rickets and in adults a condition called osteomalacia, leading to muscle weakness and bone pain where even walking up stairs or getting out of a chair becomes challenging. Low levels in babies may lead to muscle spasms occurring and even fits. Also, children won’t grow as much as they should. Rickets leads to their bones being softer than normal causing legs to become curved (bow-legged). So, if you think any of the above symptoms apply to you, make an appointment to see your Doctor. Dr Louise R Newson is a part -time GP in Solihull and has written many medical books including training courses and knowledge updates for GPs. Additionally, she is an editor of and writer for many medical publications. louise.newson@me.com
Protecting your lawn from its enemies Lawns have many enemies including moss, weeds, pets and children (bless those trampoline bare patches and football goal mouths). But have you heard of its potentially most destructive enemy of all? Phil Harrison of Lawnscience explains: “Chafer Grubs are the larvae of the Chafer Beetle, commonly known as the May Bug, an infestation of these beetles can devastate a lawn. “Towards the end of May adult beetles emerge, lay their eggs in our lawns then disappear. After a couple of weeks, the eggs hatch and the grubs begin feeding… on the roots of our lawns! Yellow patches appear and areas of the lawn wither and die.
“To compound this damage, the beetles are a great source of protein for local wildlife; badgers, foxes, hedgehogs and birds. The pecking and ripping of the turf is destructive and unsightly with the damage continuing all summer and into autumn. “If you suspect your lawn may be susceptible a preventative treatment can be applied at the correct time of year. If your lawn needs repair, for patching re-seeding or a complete lawn renovation we can help.”

Human of Solihull JUNE WILLIAMS - A Knowle Blessing Every Friday morning for the last 28 years, June Williams has arrived at Knowle Village Hall and with the help of dedicated volunteers, laid out a delightful array of home-baked cakes and put the kettle on, preparing for the arrival of those who have come to enjoy the welcoming warmth and conviviality of friends. With a cuppa costing just 50p and a generous cake at 40p - where else can you go for so much? Walking into the room you’re immediately struck with the sense of timelessness. This is something that could be happening in any decade - only the fashion has changed. June and the group of volunteers serve tea and coffee to anyone, young or elderly who care to visit on a Friday morning. They now have regular customer support from over 50 people.
had a remarkable clear vision - June has no other words to describe it - of a room filled with tables and chairs with people who she instinctively knew were lonely. She had her answer and knew what God wanted her to do. All income goes back in for Christmas and Easter parties, plus birthday celebrations with baking ingredients paid for by June and her wonderful volunteers. She has seen many people over the years coming through the door and watched as a single person would become a group forming into close friendships of support with interests shared. June Williams’ dedicated love for her calling has spread wide in the community. We are the ones who are blessed to be able to share in it.
June was born in Solihull Hospital but grew up in Longbridge when financial need took her parents there. She went to Turves Green School and worked at C&A in Corporation St, Birmingham for 19 years. Having married Keith, they frequently visited Knowle and whilst shopping at Limited Editions, which was then a men’s outfitters in the High street, June was invited to a Knowle Christian Fellowship meeting in Knowle Village Hall. June became a devoted Christian followed by the couple moving to Knowle in 1983. Searching for meaning and not knowing how her life was to be best served, one day she
