MY HARBORNE & EDGBASTON, AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2017
Welcome to our ‘back to school’ issue, focussed on new and returning students as well as those in the throes of making important decisions for their future. The feature kicks off with some wise words of warning from local headmistress Debbie James, who has been playing a vital role in the transformation of several local comprehensive schools, currently at Swanshurst Girl’s School. Serving at the helm of the biggest girl’s school in Europe Mrs James has a clear insight into the current and future climate of our comprehensive schools and shares some interesting predications with us. From a local ambassador for education to a global ambassador for women, the one and only Wonder Women graces our cover this issue. In an interview with actress Gal Gadot we find out some of the many reasons why this role could not have been more suited to her. It’s an exciting time for fans who have just caught Gadot in her stand alone Wonder Woman film and are eagerly anticipating her return in DC’s November release ‘Justice League’. We’re certainly looking forward to seeing more of Diana Prince flaunting her unapologetically honest and honourable alter ego on the big screen later this year. Keep an eye out for all the fantastic events going on locally in our double page ‘What’s On’, and keep up with the the local (good) news stories in ‘Word On The Street’ - it’s always encouraging to hear about new businesses starting up, renovations and award winning services on our doorstep!
All the best,
Ruby & Amy

MY HARBORNE & EDGBASTON, AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2017
Comicbook heroine of the century Gal Gadot: "I love everything Wonder Woman
stands for"
DC COMIC FILMS ARE OFTEN ACCUSED OF BEING DARK COMPARED TO MARVEL FILMS. WILL ‘WONDER WOMAN’ FOLLOW THAT OR BE LIGHTER? GAL GADOT: It carries a lot of funny moments but it’s a good drama story as well. Patty Jenkins, who directed ‘Monster’, directed me for this and she is the best director for this movie. She’s all about the heart of the story, all about the soul of the story.
WHEN ZACK SNYDER OFFERED YOU THE ROLE OF WONDER WOMAN, DID YOU KNOW THERE WOULD BE HER OWN MOVIE PLUS VARIOUS SPIN-OFFS INCLUDING ‘BVS’ AND ‘JUSTICE LEAGUE PARTS 1 & 2’? GAL GADOT: We didn’t talk at all about the commitment of it – but I’m happy about it. I’m all about commitment. I’m a Taurus, very loyal! I’ve worked with the ‘Fast & Furious’ family for years I was happy I have this new amazing family to be with.
AS A WORKING MOTHER, WERE YOU HESITANT ABOUT ACCEPTING THE ROLE? YOU’D BE AWAY FROM HOME A LOT… GAL GADOT: There is always hesitation. Being a mother really set my priorities, family comes first. I have the best partner [husband, Yaron Versano] to do what I do. When I was first thinking about getting pregnant I wasn’t sure how it was going to work with travelling. We lead a very hectic life. And my husband told me, ‘When you have a child what kind of role model do you want to be? You are who you are, you love to work, you love to
7 wonders of Gal Gadot • She filmed Wonder Woman while five months pregnant with her second daughter. • She returns to the big screen as Wonder Woman in Justice League pt 1 out on 16th November this year and Justice League pt 2 coming out in 2019 • She is an Israeli actress and model • She does many of her own stunts • In university she studied law and international relations • She met her husband, Yaron Varsano in the desert in Israel. • She served two years in the Israeli defence forces
challenge yourself, you love what you do. Are you going to give this all up just because…?’ And then he really made me understand that I want to set a good role model for my daughter. I want her to believe that she can achieve what she wants and that everything is possible. And it’s all about her.
WHAT KIND OF CHILDHOOD DID YOU HAVE GROWING UP IN ROSH HAAYIN, ISRAEL? GAL GADOT: A very happy childhood. I was a tomboy. I see little girls now who love nail polish, not me. I had bruises on my knee all the time, I used to play volleyball, basketball, tennis and dodgeball. I was a dancer all my life, too. So, I was always very active. I grew up in Rosh HaAyin, which is very close to Tel Aviv and still have so many friends that I grew up with, a group of seven of us and we grew up together and it’s great.
DID BEING IN THE ARMY GIVE YOU GOOD DISCIPLINE FOR BEING AN ACTRESS AND HELP ESPECIALLY WITH ACTION ROLES LIKE ‘WONDER WOMAN’ AND ‘FAST & FURIOUS’? GAL GADOT: Yes and no. Going to the army could not be further away from Hollywood and shooting a movie. What I did in the army was a very physical role. I was a combat trainer, I didn’t fight, I wasn’t on the field but I kept soldiers in shape. The only resemblance that I can find is the physicality, the intensity of the fact that both the training I did for the army and for Wonder Woman was very demanding. Intensive.
FINALLY, YOU WERE IN THE COMEDIES ‘DATE NIGHT’ AND ‘KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES’. WAS IT FUN DOING COMEDY AND WOULD YOU LIKE TO DO MORE? GAL GADOT: I’d love to do more comedy but my life right now is all about Wonder Woman. I have a lot on my plate. I’m going through a minor identity crisis! I love everything she stands for. She’s all about love, equality, truth, compassion and justice. For me it was important that people can relate to her.. men, women, boys, girls… I didn’t want her to be polished, I wanted her to have an edge. I’ve been shooting for so long she’s becoming me and I’m becoming her.
IN YOUR DAILY LIFE, DO YOU FIND YOURSELF THINKING ‘WHAT WOULD WONDER WOMAN DO’? GAL GADOT: Yeah. [laughs]

stripes for HIM Early Autumn style prep Stripes don’t always have to be nautical. Sometimes they can add a sprinkling of French ‘male-chicness’ and sometimes they can provide added structure to nicely fitting outerwear. Stripes with a bold colour certainly carry an air of understated charisma, and that ever sought after sense of utterly incidental style - ‘Oh what, this? I just put on the first thing I saw!’
stripes for HER All about that base Stripes have been on a horizontal holiday this summer, and as autumn draws close it’s all about bright bold colours and covering your curves with a pattern that exentuates them. That’s right, we’re not hiding volumptuousness any more. Stripes can create the illusion of curves where there are none, or go above and beyond the call of duty for exisiting assets, so they make an exciting and transformative addition to your wardrobe.

he level of study that goes into finding the right secondary school does harken back to the days of formal education in many ways‌ Gathering together all of the relevant information to pore through and cross reference exhibits skills we first properly put to the test in high school Geography. Making a fair and balanced assessment, taking into consideration the same factors across many different options involves skills we developed in high school Science. Looking at the aesthetic beauty, standard of life, and general learning atmosphere are things we picked up through Art, Design Technology, and spending time in various learning environments. Secondary school education sets us up for life in many ways that we may take for granted. Many people having passed through the education system still feel that the lessons learnt have

little relevance to most jobs, but upon closer reflection it is clear the foundation that has been built by our school years is important to our interaction with the world, and in this instance informed decision making. Many jobs will exist in ten to fifteen years that do not exist right now following the fluid nature of social and economic change. For this reason the spectrum of subjects taught at high school play such a vital role in your child’s future. Luckily, we live in a great part of the world with plenty of access to impressive schools with strong backgrounds in many subjects, but the choice can be overwhelming. We have gathered together the open day dates for local private and public schools to help make it as easy as possible for you to find the school that will best cater to your child.

What’s next for local education? Swanshurst headmistress, Debbie James, shares her professional insight.
I
n many ways, the state of education in South Birmingham has never been better. Parents, choosing school places for their children have a range of excellent schools on their doorstep. Schools with a caring inclusive ethos, strong leadership teams, good outcomes for their students and recognition from Ofsted for the good work they are doing. But as a local headteacher with 13 years’ experience (11 years at Wheelers Lane Technology College and now 2 years at Swanshurst and a few years as a Senior Inspector with Ofsted in between) the future has never looked bleaker. Since becoming a headteacher in 2002, through the years of ‘Education, Education, Education’ as a driving principle we saw our schools receiving funding that was appropriate to our challenges. As local headteachers we were able to ensure good quality teaching lay at the heart of our schools. We could employ enough support staff to allow teachers to focus on teaching and provide the individual help that our most vulnerable pupils need. Results improved, behaviour improved and our schools
became the places that you were happy to send your children. However, headteachers are now in the invidious position of trying to sustain our healthy happy schools whilst managing significant budget cuts. Of course, we will explore every opportunity to cut costs. Many of us are working closely with other schools to look for savings and efficiencies. Swanshurst already works closely with a group of schools in a partnership called STEP where we provide each other with school improvement advice, share best practice and look for best value ideas. We also work in the South Network of secondary schools that provides very cost effective staff training, specialist support for our students with poor behaviour and opportunities for our students to work together on projects like the South Network Art Show. However, none of that will protect us from a climate of reducing budgets and rapidly increasing costs. The recent Queen’s Speech reaffirmed the government’s commitment to introduce a new schools funding
formula. The impact of this on Birmingham schools has already been modelled. Almost every school in the city will lose out. At Swanshurst the expected cuts are in the order of £400 per pupil. This goes well past ‘tightening our belts’ and into a situation that could do serious harm to our students, limiting option subjects, reducing enrichment activities, increasing class sizes and reducing the extra help and support for those students who need it. Many of my colleagues are being forced to consider redundancies of long serving and committed staff.
Cuts on this scale are not just the concern of our current parents and staff. They will have a long-term impact on the future prosperity of us all. There are lots of ways to make your voice heard. Write to your local councillor or MP, get in touch with a local school offering support or look online at the myriad of groups that are opposing the cuts in education.

Edgbaston High School Encouraging your daughter to achieve her full potential
A
t Edgbaston High School for Girls (EHS) we aim to help our students to become confident, considerate and intellectually curious young women. Our ‘all-round’ approach means that, from the outset, your daughter is actively encouraged to develop her individual abilities and interests. In a truly caring and supportive environment, academic excellence is underpinned by a distinctive and successful system of pastoral care that ensures each girl achieves her full potential, whatever her passion. One of the features of EHS is the continuity of education it offers: the Pre-Prep, Preparatory, Senior and Sixth Form departments on site work together to cater for girls aged between 2 ½ - 18 years of age. Pupils across all departments enjoy a broad and balanced curriculum: they achieve high academic standards under the guidance of supportive teaching staff and an extensive variety of sporting and creative interests are encouraged. Year 13 leavers go on to study a diverse range of competitive degree
courses at some of the country’s most sought-after universities. The Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) recently awarded EHS ‘Outstanding’ and ‘Excellent’ accreditations, endorsing its reputation as one of the leading independent schools in the region. We want girls to be so stimulated and challenged during their time here that they not only meet, but exceed, expectations. Come and see for yourself the difference an EHS education could make to your daughter.

hat’s what all care homes should be and Ash Lodge fully lives up to this expectation. During an unannounced visit a number of residents of this specialist care home commented on how they felt about the place… “lovely, great, and heaven” were the words they used to describe it. Located just a few minutes drive from leafy Edgbaston and Harborne, Ash Lodge provides the very best in quality of care and excellent facilities at the same time as being a cost effective option for those wishing to preserve their inheritance for the next generation. For example, a week’s fees range from £650 to £875 including all accommodation, food and care services. The only extra costs are for simple things like hair cuts or chiropodist services. There are 54 bedrooms, the majority with ensuite facilities and many with their own patio door leading onto the gardens. The residents are encouraged to bring along their personal items to make their rooms more homely. Mealtimes are a social occasion and specialist diets are catered for, all residents and relatives have free access to the Wifi. There is a low staff turnover because Ash Lodge is such a pleasant place to work, and a high ratio of 1 in 3 staff to residents.

Helen Wilcox, (Registered Manager), has been working in care for over 30 years and said: “We want our residents to be happy here, for many of them this is their last home so we make sure it is as good as it can possibly be because all our residents are here to be loved and cared for” As well as general nursing services, Ash Lodge provides Specialist End of Life Care, Complex Care and Care for people living with Dementia. There is a Relative Suite that can be used at the most sensitive times to be near their loved ones and there is no restriction on visiting times. Helen added: “Caring is both our profession and our passion and residents can be assured of the highest standards. I Get by with a Little Help from My Friends‌
Appointing an Attorney A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) enables you (the donor) to authorise a person of your choosing, (the Attorney) to make decisions on your behalf. Many people have heard of Lasting Powers of Attorney but how do they work in practice, and what are the different types of LPA that you choose from? Two Types of LPA
Most of us would want to be cared for by people we trust at times of vulnerability in our lives. This type of LPA allows an Attorney to make such
LPAs are important tools in protecting the interests of a vulnerable person, who may need to have decisions made on their behalf now or in the future. 34
decisions only when the donor is no longer able to. Property and Financial Affairs LPAs give the Attorney authority to decide and act in property dealings, bank account withdrawals or transfers, completing income and tax returns, claiming benefits and pensions as well as on wider financial matters. Managing financial affairs can be complex, and this LPA is used to protect the financial interests of the donor. With both types of LPA, any decision made by an Attorney must be made in the best interests of the donor. Will I Be Giving Too Much Control Away? LPAs are important tools in protecting the interests of a vulnerable person, who may need to have decisions made on their behalf now or in the future. A donor can often be more reluctant to appoint a Health and Welfare Attorney than a Property and Financial Affairs Attorney, because welfare decisions can include deciding about their medical care and whether they should go into residential care.
MY HARBORNE & EDGBASTON, AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2017
VWV.CO.UK
Health and Welfare LPAs concern decisions relating to medical matters, living arrangements, day-to-day care and the wider social well-being of the donor who has appointed an Attorney.
BUSINESS & FINANCE If any concerns are raised about an Attorney’s actions, the Court of Protection can investigate and ultimately remove the Attorney, if necessary. Such concerns should be alleviated by the donor’s choice of Attorney. A donor is advised to appoint an Attorney whom they know and trust, such as a close relative or friend. With the right arrangements in place, LPAs can provide great peace of mind by ensuring that the donor has help when it is needed.
If you would like further advice or information about how to appoint an Attorney, please contact Rachael Armstrong on
0121 227 3726
If no Attorneys are appointed and a person loses capacity, the alternative process of applying to Court to have a Deputy appointed is much more expensive and restrictive. Having no option but to go to Court is something that we always recommend should be avoided. You should take timely and appropriate advice on the appointment of an Attorney and the types of restrictions that should be put in place to give you additional peace of mind.

BIRMINGHAM INSTITUTE OF FOREST RESEARCH A major new decade-long experiment to study the impact of climate and environmental change on woodlands officially opened on Wednesday 21st June. The Free Air Carbon Dioxide Enrichment (FACE) experiment at the Birmingham Institute of Forest Research (BIFoR) is assessing the impact of raised carbon dioxide (CO2) levels on whole forest ecosystems by artificially raising the CO2 level around patches of mature woodland. The results will help scientists to predict the effects of the atmospheric changes expected by 2050, and to measure the capacity of the forest to lock away carbon released by fossil fuel burning. The BIFoR FACE facility is the first of its kind in Europe, and one of only three worldwide. The experiment will be the first to produce any concrete evidence about the ability of temperate woodland to mitigate future climate change. Multiple experiments will be run alongside the primary CO2 research project, looking at how raised CO2levels are likely to affect the whole ecosystem, from leaves to soil and from insects to fungi.

In comparison with the rest of the UK, a high proportion of users of TuitionKit (an innovative new online study resource) were recorded in Birmingham demonstrating how technology is playing an increasing role in education and learning. Leon Hady, former headteacher and founder of TuitionKit said: “It’s great to see so many students using online services to aid in their studies. Students are embracing new ways of studying, alongside tried and tested methods like repetition and the use of flashcards. More info at: www.tuitionkit.com

THE BIG SLEUTH
Repeating The Big Hoot’s multi-award-winning formula, Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity and Wild in Art are teaming up to present The Big Sleuth. THE UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM BACKS THE BIRMINGHAM 2022 BID Birmingham 2022 is partnering with University of Birmingham for its 2022 Commonwealth Games Bid. University of Birmingham is one of the UK’s leading sporting universities, where sport takes centre stage. Its reputation for providing a world-class training environment on its Edgbaston campus attracted Team Jamaica for its preparation camp ahead of the London 2012 Olympic Games and the team is returning ahead of this year’s IAAF World Championships this summer. University of Birmingham’s new Squash Courts and Hockey Pitches would become the competition venues for Hockey and Squash during Birmingham 2022, as part of the city’s bid proposals. The University’s recently opened new £55 million Sport & Fitness Club includes six glass back squash courts with 200 spectator seats, a 2,000m² indoor arena and a second sports hall. The two halls will be a spectacular setting for the main all-glass squash show court and a secondary show court.planning family Wild Play Days, school group sessions, specialist moth nights and archaeology walks.
To most people, the word ‘sleuth’ means a private detective, but it’s also the collective noun for a group of bears! Bizarre but true. Birmingham will bring both definitions together in the summer of the 2017 and the Sun Bear, the world’s smallest species of bear (now threatened with extinction) is the inspiration for a brand-new sculpture for this event. These incredible creatures are sure to inspire creativity and generate plenty of fun for all you sleuth spotters on the trail! After which, the bears will be auctioned to raise valuable funds for Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity.

PEBBLE MILL TRANQUILITY GARDENS OPENS At the heart of Pebble Mill’s pioneering healthcare and medical centre a Tranquility Garden has been created to provide a peaceful, green open space where people can quietly sit, take time out and enjoy nature. The garden is just a stone’s throw away from one of Birmingham’s major highways where 45,000 vehicles pass each day and has been conceived with help from the City Landscape Architect and Calthorpe’s landscape and environmental consultants, Fira. The Tranquility Garden is an aspiration of Calthorpe Estates to incorporate a unique and natural setting where leading edge healthcare and medical services can flourish and people visiting, working or living locally can enjoy. The Environment Agency and Calthorpe Estates are at the start of tunnelling work of the £4 million project that will alleviate local flooding that was evident this time last year. A huge shield has been buried beneath the Pershore Road that will channel any flood water from the Bourn Brook to the River Rea, reducing the risk of flooding to nearby properties.

I CAN’T BELIEVE IT’S NOT
PAVING Some garden improvement projects may be for vanity, and some for long term profit, this one ticks both boxes. Stamped concrete may not sound so glamorous, but it holds the potential to be, since it is waiting to be molded into whatever you think would be most beautiful. Concrete is able to mimic higher end materials such as stone, brick and even wood. For this reason and many others, like its durability, easy maintenance and lower cost, it is taking off as a fantastic option for driveways, pathways and patios. Homeowners, even those of us who are particularly attached to our homes, always keep in mind what we are doing to our properties, and whether it is adding or subtracting value. So it’s always a very welcome sight when much needed improvements happen to add substantial value too. Stamped concrete has been proven to raise property values as it adds that finishing touch of elegance and attention to detail, setting it apart from other properties and giving a great first impression for potential buyers. There are some risks involved in installation that ought to be taken quite seriously. The concrete mixture must be at a very narrow equilibrium

It is our responsibility as land owners to do what we can to contribute to the neighbourhood’s environmental well-being, and for this reason it is not advisable to cover all of your outdoor spaces in non-porous materials, they are best used in moderation.
between moist and dry, the more wet it is the bigger risk of a messy finish, the more dry it is the greater the risk of cracking. If you do not have any experience with mixing concrete it is best to leave it to the professionals, getting this balance right is paramount to the final result. But there is more to consider than beauty, cost and value. It is important to be environmentally conscious when making a choice with your front and back gardens. A healthy environ-
Overall, it’s just one less thing to worry about. No loose paving stones causing tripping hazards or looking messy, no weeds popping up, virtually no attention needed at all. Though it will be sure to command plenty of attention if you choose a quirky finish.

Luxurious T
his project transformed a large bathroom that was looking tired and wasn’t being utilised to its full capacity, into a fabulous boutique bathroom with a luxurious curved shower. Roman Bathrooms designer, Caroline, visited the property, and came up with some ideas, which homeowners Barbara and Alan both liked. “Caroline has great vision and a way of really ‘seeing’ what people want,” says Barbara. “My only specification was curves as opposed to corners and a larger shower. After that we let her imagination take over.“
Bathroom
Transformation
The bathroom is now unrecognisable. A brand new double shower sits where the bath used to and the bath is recessed into the old shower space. There’s large ‘hotel-style’ tiling on the walls to maximise the feeling of space and some clever recessed storage and glass shelving just behind the loo. The colour scheme is a calming cream and brown palette – perfect for relaxing at the end of a hard day. “We were so pleased with everything but the trouble is now, we’ve been spoilt,” says Barbara. “We’ve got more work to do in the summer and have re-booked Roman Bathrooms for that project (it’s a bathroom and separate cloakroom) – as we don’t ever want to go anywhere else!”

Auction Intrigue at Biddle & Webb M
ystified by the weird and wonderful world of auction? Auctioneer, Ellie Hill sheds a little light on the subject… Biddle and Webb’s Interiors auction is nothing short of eclectic. As auctioneers we are used to seeing and selling a vast array of desirable items ranging from Moorcroft jugs to mahogany cheese coasters, witches’ balls to Rolex watches. Unusual, unconventional and at times - frankly bizarre, the ever expanding antiques industry never fails to surprise the saleroom at
our monthly Interiors Auction. Biddle & Webb’s May Interiors sale saw an international array of stamps sold at auction. The collection achieved well over £40,000 in hammer total – proving that stamp collecting is no archaic pastime. One of the more impressive lots of the day was lot 206: A portfolio of USA. 1845 – 1946 mint & used collection incl. Postmasters Provisionals, some on cover and some certified, realised at £5500.
share of star lots – to include a rather striking string of butterscotch amber beads, sold to one lucky telephone bidder for £3,000. One of the more exceptional lots on the day, lot 319 A piece of cake from the wedding of Jacqueline and John Fitzgerald Kennedy, 1953 sold for a healthy chunk at £500, piece of cake! For more information about consignment please contact the saleroom on 0121 455 8042, or email ellie.hill@biddleandwebb.com.

HOME & GARDEN
How many Downstairs bathrooms hold so many opportunities for your home… parties where guests don’t end up taking an accidental tour of your bedrooms, growing old in your home and not constantly having to tackle the stairs, and of course adding value to your property should you want to sell. The average cost of building a downstairs toilet (to a high standard) starts from a very reasonable £2.5k and takes around 1-2 weeks to complete. A building project like this is quite simple to do, but it does involve a sizable list of tradesmen; an electrician, a carpenter, a plumber, a decorator, a floor fitter, a builder and waste disposal. If the list sounds like too much of a headache then there are plenty of local project managers who would be happy to act as a middleman communicating between you and the tradesmen, organising when they need to be doing the work and keeping a close eye on how many hours each person is putting in. A useful equation to keep in mind when considering a project like this:
Cost = labour + material cost
LOOS do you CHOOSE? There are essential materials that you could not expect to build a bathroom without like the toilet itself and plastering to create the separate room. There are also extras that you may wish to include such as a radiator, two taps for both hot and cold water and possibly an extractor fan, which will push the price to around 3.5k. Whatever your current situation, it is always comforting to know that should you want to move you have the power to do so, and relatively quickly. But the trouble many people find when they begin the process of trying to sell their property is that unless they are ticking a lot of the right boxes for buyers it can take a long time for interest to become an offer. Not only is it important to give your
home added value, it is also helpful - in the interests of haste - to give your home something that opens up a broad range of opportunities for potential buyers. It’s helpful to remember that you need to stay roughly within the price range of your neighbourhood or you can risk staying on the market for months if not years. So a small project like this one can help to sell your property faster without raising it out of the attainability of your prospective buyers.
