MY HARBORNE & EDGBASTON, OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2017
Welcome to your guide to the festive season. This issue we have listed some of the most exciting shows and events coming up to celebrate Halloween, Bonfire night and the Christmas period in style. From the classic tradition of ‘The Nutcracker’ performance, to magnificent firework displays, this is the season to be jolly and to get out and about rubbing shoulders with the neighbours. Our cover story focuses on homegrown talent Benjamin Zephaniah, whose contribution to British culture spans over five decades, who has been awarded honorary doctorates from universities across the country and was included in The Times’ list of 50 greatest postwar writers. We spread the word about some of his more recent accomplishments, most notably Zephaniah’s role in the award-winning Birmingham based TV drama ‘Peaky Blinders’ as street preacher Jeremiah Jesus. In other local happenings, Calthorpe Estates has recently celebrated a staggering 300 years in business, and hosted the Edgbaston Tricentenary Festival at Birmingham Botanical Gardens to commemorate this impressive milestone.
All the best,

BENJA ZEPHA Poet
Lyricist
T
his born and bred Brummie has been popping up everywhere lately, and spreading his messages of awareness (and action) to a larger audience with each new accomplishment - so if you haven’t been aware of his movements you must be living under a rock! Zephaniah has carved out a memorable cameo role in the award winning TV drama, ‘Peaky Blinders’ set in 1919 Birmingham as street preacher Jeremiah Jesus, all the while continuing his quest for liberation of marginalised and overlooked peoples of the world.
8
Most Brummies of a certain generation can trace their knowledge of this keen-minded and proud Rastafarian back to school days, where his political opinions were being felt strongly in the classroom. His controversial poems were able to reach over social hurdles and find their way into our literature text books, which I remember finding surprising even as a primary school student. His ability to break down complex socio-political issues into succinct matter-of-fact verses gave him a direct line into the hearts of many, he called this ‘street politics’. Our Robin Hood of the early 70s, claiming the art of poetry from the elite and giving back to the common man, opening up a stage for
important issues that had largely been ignored. So where did it all begin for Benjamin Zephaniah? He started his career at ten years old performing at his local church. By the age of 15 he had already gathered a significant following in his neighbourhood, Handsworth, which he affectionately referred to as the Jamaican capital of Europe. Seeking a bigger audience than the Afro-Caribbean and Asian communities he preached to embolden, he moved to London where bigger change could happen, and from there he has taken his inspiration around the world.

What are the latest happenings with this restless man of many talents? His new album ‘Revolutionary Minds’ was released on September 1st and is available now! He and his band have been touring some of the more intimate summer festivals - Latitude, Womad, Shambala, Boomtown, and here are some upcoming gigs you can still get involved in throughout autumn:
In the meantime we’re look forward to the return of the fantastically compelling Peaky Blinders’ fourth season and keeping our fingers crossed for another cameo from our cheeky Brummie street preacher, Benjamin Zephaniah. P.S. - Couldn’t we get a petition going to get him involved in the next Mostly Jazz Fest? Or the next Lunar Fest? It’s about time!

FUR & velvet for HIM Winter warrior / sleek as snow Rugged winter looks are creeping into our fashion fantasy subconsious because of shows like Game of Thrones, so it’s great to find a way to make these wild looks highstreet appropriate. All greys and browns have the effect of camoflaging into a wintery landscape and the sheepskin coat has that element of warrior of ancient times. Release your wild alter ego with this risque look! Velvet looks cosy but stays sharp. With velvet you can look dressed up but also seasonal and perhaps even a touch festive!
Feathers & fluff for HER Flouncing the feathers and flaunting the fur Peacocking in winter isnt always easy when you need to wear layer upon layer of clothes, but you can ruffle a few feathers with a spicy evening look. (see left) Oversized fluffy statement jackets are an absolute winter essential, especially for those lazy days when an outfit just isn’t coming together fast enough - you chuck this over the top and create instant glamour.

Tricentenary Celebrations
In Edgbaston
C
althorpe Estates hosted a day of celebrations with a community event to mark its 300 year anniversary last month. Almost 4,000 people attended the Edgbaston Tricentenary Festival on Sunday 17 September at the Botanical Gardens in Edgbaston. There was a host of activities and entertainment to suit all ages, from vintage rides and a treasure hunt trail, to craft activities, demonstrations and stalls, as well as ‘gastro’ food and beverage offering. A host of local performers, entertainers and jazz bands, including The Miss Fortunes and Terry Clarke Band, were also on hand to get everyone into the swing. The Calthorpe Estate was established in 1717 when Sir Richard Gough purchased the land; the estate, which now spans over 1,600 acres of Edgbaston, has remained in the Anstruther-Gough-Calthorpe family for this time. Mark Lee, Chief Executive at Calthorpe Estates said, “We are delighted to be holding this community event as we celebrate our Tricentenary. Our focus has always been on creating thriving communities and the best places to live, work and relax. It seemed only fitting that we celebrate this landmark year with a community event at the Botanical Gardens – situated at the heart of the Estate.”

Have you had a wrist injury such as a sprain? We are experts in diagnosis and treatment of these injuries whether on the sports field or related to occupational injury. Most wrist problems can be treated by hand therapy and a small portion may need key hole surgery, such as scaphoid fractures and ligament tears.
Interesting facts
1. You can still have a fracture with a normal wrist x-ray. 2, Most minor sprains should settle by two weeks. 3. Tendonitis is a common wrist complaint.

Use your hands to mix everything together very thoroughly, so that each slice is coated with the oily mixture. 5. Arrange the potato slices on their sides in a 20cm (8inch) round baking dish.

LEGAL & FINANCE
Length
Should the of a Marriage Determine the
Divorce Settlement? Should the length of a marriage play a part in deciding what each spouse should receive on divorce? To what extent should other factors be taken into account, like the contribution each person has made to the joint finances? The legal starting point is that there should be equality on divorce. This is known as the ‘sharing principle.’ However, one of the factors that can lead a court to move away from the sharing principle is the length of the marriage, as in a recent case.
The legal starting point is that there should be equality on divorce. This is known as the ‘sharing principle.’ 28
were around £100,000 each. However, the wife received discretionary annual bonuses which had totalled £10.5million during the marriage. There was no agreement that the couple should maintain separate finances but there had never been a joint bank account or any joint investments. The husband was not aware of the details of the wife’s bonuses and the wife fully funded the couple’s holidays, the purchase of two of their houses, and bought three Aston Martin cars for her husband. The marriage broke down and the wife started divorce proceedings in December 2013. What Does the Law Say? The Court must consider a number of factors when deciding the division of assets. This includes the age of the parties, the length of the marriage and the contributions from both parties, financial and otherwise, including raising children. Whilst the duration of the marriage is a factor, it is not the only factor to be assessed.

Sharp v Sharp This career-focussed couple were both in their 40s and were married in June 2009. They had no children. The wife was a trader and the husband was employed by an international IT company. Their basic salaries
LEGALEDUCATION & FINANCE The Court’s Initial Decision In Mr and Mrs Sharp’s case, their total assets were £6.9 million, and the husband sought a total financial package worth £3million. The judge found no sufficient reason to depart from the sharing principle and awarded the husband £2.725 million. The wife appealed on the basis that: • this was a short, dual career childless marriage • that the couple structured their finances in a particular way The Court of Appeal awarded the husband £2million.

What Does This Mean if You Are Divorcing? Whilst the sharing principle is the starting point, this case demonstrates that there can be circumstances where there is good reason to depart from it. It is therefore extremely important to obtain independent legal advice upon separation.

THE HIGHFIELD PUB RAISES MONEY FOR MAASAI COW HERD Pub goers popping into The High Field in Edgbaston are being asked to put their change from buying a round - or any cash they can spare – towards Herds for Change, a project aimed at delivering vital and sustainable change in the Mara, Kenya.
UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM WINS GREEN FLAG AWARD FOR FIRST TIME The University’s Edgbaston campus has been recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as one of the very best green spaces in the world. This international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities. The University is famous for its green and leafy campus, which will soon be further enhanced by the development of a 12 acre Green Heart, opening the campus up for staff, students and the wider community. Head of Grounds and Gardens David O’Driscoll said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award for first time. “We know how much quality green spaces matter to students, staff and our local community, and this award celebrates the dedication that goes into maintaining the campus to such a high standard.”

The High Field and its sister pubs owned by Peach Pub Company are aiming to raise £250, or more, each to buy a cow for the Maasai community in Kenya as part of Herds for Change, the latest fundraising campaign carried out by its charitable arm. The goal is to raise £130,000 to buy a breeding herd of eight pedigree bulls and 400 cows for the Enonkishu community in the Mara. The profits will be ploughed back into the community and used to support the livelihoods of local families. To make a donation, pop into The High Field today or go online to mydonate.bt.com/ events/herdsforchange/
FLY TIPPING FAST RESPONSE The MY magazines have been overwhelmed recently with tweets from local residents shareing photos of fly-tipping in our beautiful green spaces, refuse that has been dumped by rogue traders. We’ve been following this closely and reporting instances of fly-tipping to the council who have had an impressive responce time of around 24hrs. We’ve even recieved follow-up phones calls to each report we’ve made letting us know the problem has been dealt with. GRANT OF £59.8M FOR MIDLAND METRO EXTENSION APPROVED The tram network extending to Edgbaston is set to be completed by 2021. The Edgbaston Extension will extend the network by approximately 1.35km running from the Centenary Square stop on Broad Street, passing over the Worcester/Birmingham Canal via Broad Street Canal Bridge before continuing south-west through the Five Ways underpass and to the terminus located outside 54 Hagley Road. The entirety of the tram line will be onstreet running, meaning the route follows existing roads bound by residential, commercial and business buildings. The scheme will include two tram stops (in addition to the terminus) which are: Brindleyplace and Five Ways. The trams are intended to run on battery power between Centenary Square and Brindleyplace, and also between Five Ways and Hagley Road, and therefore there is no requirement for overhead lines or building fixings on those sections.
£85M PLANS FOR 400 HOMES AROUND EDGBASTON CRICKET GROUND The proposals for a four-acre site around the stadium will also see a new main entrance on Edgbaston Road, a plaza area for match-days and an extension to the car park site behind the RES Wyatt Stand. Warwickshire County Cricket Club has sealed a deal with international property investment group Patrizia UK and the Government’s Homes & Communities Agency for 375 new ‘build to rent’ homes as well as new shopping and catering opportunities. The new development still requires planning and local consents.

BUDS RUN AIM TO RAISE £70,000 FOR PARKINSONS DISEASE A popular charity 5K fun run at the University of Birmingham is celebrating its fourth year with a fresh course, fresh fundraising goals and a big birthday to celebrate. “Bud’s Run” has already raised over £50,000 for Parkinson’s UK, and hopes to smash the £70,000 barrier when it’s held again on Saturday the 21st October 2017. Along with the 5K, there will be a fun run for the under 11s, interactive team games organsied by Rabble, a raffle, sports masseur on hand, fresh pizza and plenty of tea, coffee and cake. Although very much a family fun run, previous Bud’s Runs have attracted athletics stars both past and present. They include world marathon record holder Paula Radcliffe, middle distance legend Steve Cram, Olympian and 1500m World Championship Silver Medallist Hannah England (currently coached by Bud) and Olympian Sara Treacy (also currently coached by Bud). hy leave the beauty behind in your favourite holiday destinations? Bring a bit of European charm to your garden and indulge in overseas artistry all year round!
Greek Greek gardens are typically designed to embrace extreme weathers, and with the 32 degree summers and harsh sleeting/snowing/hailing winters we’ve faced in recent years it couldn’t hurt to steal a few ideas. To be more accurate, the typical homeowner in Greece did not always have a garden, and soil with any useful properties was scarce, so they instead decorated the cobbled pavements outside their
Turkish Turkey is known to be more than bridge between east and west, it is a marriage of the two. You can particularly see elements of Moroccan style mixing with Greek, and generally influences from across Europe and the Middle East. Most traditional Turkish gardens are small courtyards often paved and enclosed, so this is a particularly wonderful theme for a small garden, but can be just as suited to a large space. Turkish gardens for this reason often feel like an entire living room has been moved outside, or a garden has been moved inside, it skates a thin line between the two bringing together cushions and carpets with lanterns and water features. Water is a crucial element, and is almost always present in a traditional courtyard garden, surrounded by gorgeous blue mosaic. Cacti and other hot climate plants are best suited to this style of garden, and it’s just a bonus that they need very little attention, in fact, this may be the lowest maintenance garden around.

GREEK
Italian The first thing to consider when creating an Italian garden is symmetry, so if you are pedantic about keeping everything neat and tidy this is definitely the garden for you. Many elements of what is considered a traditional English garden actually took inspiration from Italian Renaissance gardens, especially the sculptured topiary, neatly weaving gravel pathways and the elegant use of water. Water was particularly important to Renaissance garden designs because of its ability to create mood and drama. These grand designs can be easily scaled down from the several acre grounds of mansions we are used to seeing at National Trust estates typical Italian gardens are far more rustic and homely. So while bearing in mind the classic elements along with cypress trees and a few statues you can create something stunningly glorious yet spatially feasible.
homes. This is the central idea for the ‘classically Greek’ garden, it involves neutral backdrops of pale stone with archways, olive trees, and drought-tolerant vividly-coloured flowering climbers. A shaded terrace is often a feature in Greek gardens too, to shelter from extreme summers - basking in the beams of light that pierce overhanging ivy. Symmetry is actually a concept that the ancient Greeks pioneered, so incorporating some mirroring in the layout will celebrate this historical fact and its widespread impact on world cultures.

transformation We love it when customers come back to us to look at another room in the house, as was the case with Roger and his partner Ann. We had done a bathroom refurbishment for them several years ago before they asked us to look at the kitchen. Their current kitchen was last changed in 1998 and had served them well for 20 years. “However things were starting to look tired,” says Roger. “From the general look of the room through to the appliances. Because we knew how professional Roman Bathrooms was, it wasn’t a difficult decision to ask them in again.” We were delighted to welcome the couple back into our showroom, to hear their ideas and discuss how to move things on. In fact, they were very open to our suggestions and the
process was relatively smooth. No walls to knock down, just a refit using the same dimensions but updating and upgrading along the way. The couple now have a sleek and pristine white kitchen that looks beautiful. Granite work surfaces set everything off and the appliances (which Roger sourced himself) add the finishing touches. “As with the bathroom last year, we couldn’t fault anything,” says Roger. “The workmanship was first-class and the attitudes of the workmen were faultless. It’s been a great experience and we’re both delighted with the outcome.”

his new pilot programme has been developed by Birmingham charity Thrive to support women who have experienced domestic and/or sexual violence, or rape.
Thrive Horticultural Therapists use the garden and gardening tasks as therapy to support rehabilitation and recovery. The charity helps people regain confidence to go back into the community and increase their social activities.
This programme will run from Tuesday 10th October 2017 - Tuesday, 17th April 2018 at Kings Heath Park. There will be two sessions, from 10am – 12pm and 1pm - 3pm and people can enrol for either or both of these sessions.
It will be carried out in a secure area of Kings Heath Park and the aim is to use therapeutic gardening sessions to help women who have experienced these crimes, to help them rebuild their lives and regain confidence in a social environment.
Amanda Fields, Manager at Thrive Birmingham, said: “With our support people can improve their sense of psychological and physical well being, learn new skills and undertake physical exercise with people who have had similar experiences.”

It’s easy to

A
rguably the most valuable commodity in a gorgeous and relaxing home is natural sunlight. A small or large space can be awakened by a generous splash of daylight, and has been scientifically proven to lift the spirits. Sometimes you can justify having a new window fitted, and sometimes it’s better to find a more economic alternative. Thankfully there are options which do not seek to replicate natural light, but extend it through the house. Here are some exciting ideas we found… Peek-a-boo! It may seem counterintuitive for a door to lack the privacy of opaqueness, but living areas of the home needn’t be cordoned off with such absolution. Closing off parts of the house in this manner can be necessary for bedrooms and bathrooms (to avoid any uncomfortable encounters!)
but downstairs open-plan living is the way forward for functional family life. One easy way to achieve this without going mad with a sledge hammer is installing French doors. They can shut out noise and create a separate space but without entirely shutting it off from the other living spaces. Sledge-hammer time? Not to be attempted by a non-professional (unless you’d like to risk severe structural problems being inflicted on your house) widening out doorways to create a double doorway or feature arch, will dispel the isolation of a room and involve it in family life. This trick not only opens up small rooms to give the illusion of added space, it is also great for when you’re entertaining
guests or hosting parties by continuing the jolly party atmosphere throughout the house. Sliding doors It’s an archway, then it’s a door, what is this witchcraft? If you don’t want to commit to the open-plan living style, sliding doors offer the best of both worlds. They save space, they open up a big wide doorway for parties, and they close up and return the room to an intimate space when the time calls for it. It’s so simple and yet so brilliant.
