MY KNOWLE & DORRIDGE, JUNE / JULY 2017
EDITOR’S WELCOME
This issue may come as somewhat of a surprise considering our rather drastic change of pace, but rest assured, the local stories and quirky events that filled our pages in the past will continue to do so, just with some new neighbours. With the humble intention of bringing you the very best of what Knowle & Dorridge have to offer we have broadened our spectrum of content to include things such as recipes, celebrities with a local connection and much, much more. This June & July is packed full of wonderful things that will draw in interest from not only across the country, but across the world. Mostly Jazz, Funk and Soul Festival welcomes big names to its stage again this year with legendary Chaka Khan headlining, joined by pioneers of hiphop Sugarhill Gang and Saint Paul and the Broken Bones - all travelling from America to spend the summer with us. Jazz appreciation month sees the return of the annual Birmingham & Solihull Jazz & Blues festival with plenty of free gigs taking place across the city. Performers will be traveling from Lithuania, the USA, Canada, Argentina, France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and Belgium joining an array of homegrown musicians, so it’s a great opportunity for Solihull to show the world how beautiful a culture we have. Looking forward to seeing you fine folk in your summer glad rags, at some of these fantastic events coming up, don’t be a stranger!
All the best,
Ruby & Amy

Spring Clean
Your Business
A
t last, Summer is here after a chilly Spring and long Winter. On the domestic front homeowners are tending the garden, flocking to DIY Stores and going to the local tip; the Spring Clean is in full flow as we skip into Summer. But what about businesses? Many aren’t seasonal like the weather; there is no let up and the wheels of the machine don’t stop turning. Andrew Watts, Real Estate specialist at The Wilkes Partnership has some words of advice for business owners. “Once in a while it can prove useful for you to pause and take stock of where your business is, the direction of travel, the options available and decisions that need to be taken. “By looking at the “Bigger Picture”, owners should not overlook potentially important legal factors that could have an impact on their businesses. “Many owners employ staff, so employment contracts either need to be put in place, or reviewed, as legislation is ever evolving. Banking and other commercial agreements should also be reviewed on a regular basis to ensure they continue to be complied with, both by the business and any suppliers or customers “On the property side of things, where I practice, business owners should review what
6
they have got and what they will need in the future. If the business has a lease, they should go through it to remind themselves of the terms: Is there a rent review coming up that they had forgotten about that could alter cash flow forecasts? Is there a break option in the lease? If the Landlord has a break option, is the business in a position to move on if it is taken up? If the Tenant has a break option, can it satisfy the various conditions of the break option clause and is there time to exercise it before the cut-off date is missed? “Freehold owners wanting to move to bigger premises may need to look at financing and other practicalities and if there is going to be a related disposal they should start to think about preparing the property for sale, both physically and the legal aspects too; reviewing statutory compliance and ensuring tax allowances have been taken advantage of. All of which should allow a smoother transaction. “Whatever the type of business; by sector or size, it’s always a great time for a Spring Clean! Take time out to review Property, HR and Commercial aspects of your business. The Wilkes Partnership solicitors offers a full range of legal services to businesses. Let us help you with your Spring Clean!”

Get the fire department on standby,
Chaka Khan
is taking the stage...
C
ome rain or shine the Mostly Jazz, Funk & Soul Festival will be in full swing all weekend long, mainly since its attendees have a summer spirit that seems to be unbreakable. This year we welcome as headliner the living legend herself, ten time grammy winner, with a tidy 22 albums under her belt, the one and only, Chaka Khan. Chaka Khan is a true Renaissance Woman. A singer, songwriter, producer, visual artist, author, actor, philanthropist, entrepreneur, activist and mother, Chaka is an international music icon who has influenced multiple generations of artists and continues to do so. From the moment she burst onto the music scene in the 1970s as the 18-year-old lead singer of the multiracial band Rufus, her powerful voice and show-stopping stage presence set her apart from any other singer, and during her 40-year career, she has developed a vast international fan base and performed on six continents. Living for a time in London and Germany, she currently resides in Los Angeles. She has two children, Indira Milini and Damien. Her life and career are chronicled in her autobiography,
Through the Fire, which was published by Rodale Books in 2003 and is currently being updated for re-release and adapted into a screenplay. The rest of this year’s line up continues determinedly on its jaw dropping course with hip-hop pioneers The Sugarhill Gang returning with Melle Mel and Scorpio. Need I remind you that they brought an entire genre into the global limelight and inspired young poets around the world to add a drumbeat to their struggles and help them find a way through? St Paul and The Broken Bones, hailing from Birmingham Alabama, are proof that soul power is a tangible resource; it is pure dance fuel. There’s only one way to discover why Rosanne Cash (Johnny Cash’s daughter) tweeted, “I have seen the future of music and the name of the band is St. Paul & the Broken Bones.” Let’s just hope they’re aware this gig is in Birmingham UK...
“Walking through life really is walking through fire” - Chaka Khan

irmingham and Solihull Jazz & Blues Festival has gone from strength to strength since its formation back in 1984, and last year made Solihull a permanent member of its celebrations. It was created by Jim Simpson, Black Sabbath’s original manager, who says “It’s a fantastic event that brings together Jazz superstars from across the globe and we hope everyone will come along and join in the fun”. Simpson has successfully put Birmingham on the map in the rock arena through his high profile band management of local talent and being the guy responsible for putting Ozzy Osbourne on stage, now his influence extends out to Solihull making it a summertime musical destination recognised throughout Europe and beyond.
This festival truly is hard to miss, attracting an impressive 94,000 people to last years Solihull performances alone, and working wonders for local tourism generating an estimated £3.4 million. It also boasts around 175 performances each year in around 40 restaurants, bars, public spaces and museums with almost all of them free to the public. So join in wherever you like, give it a go, and I’m sure you’ll find everyone can speak the universal language of jazz.
“It’s a fantastic event that brings together Jazz superstars from across the globe...”
In past years the festival has enjoyed acts from Lithuania, the USA, Canada, Argentina, France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and Belgium joining an array of homegrown musicians. It’s year on year growth promises to continue to draw in talent from near and far.

HOME & GARDEN
DON’TJUST LEAF IT S
o much attention is often paid to decorating a home, whilst gardens tend to be merely kept tidy. We are limited in this country somewhat by the weather when it comes to outdoor living spaces, but it does not prevent us from continuing the themes of our homes out into the garden. It only takes a few details to bring a space to life, this is true of internal and external areas alike. Here are some tips to bring your style and personality out into your garden, without undergoing major construction.
Farm House Garden Creating a vegetable patch or herb garden is the most obvious way to create the true farmhouse style, but there are other, less time consuming ways to achieve the look. Metal pergolas and pastel coloured garden furniture sing French elegance, and surprisingly don’t always carry a hefty price tag. Another great tip is to grow copious amount of lavender, it will attract birds and butterflies to pollinate your garden and complete the picture of countryside bliss.

many plants as possible. Potted plants, hanging plants and creepers should engulf your vision when you step out of your back door!
Industrial style Garden Certainly the most low maintenance of these themes, the industrial style doesn’t focus on plant life but rather on the historical richness of the rusted steel pipe. Any sculpture reminiscent of clockwork cogs or Victorian factory life will help too, along with classic steel lanterns and lampposts. Greenery will compliment the theme of urban decay but flowers may be a little too perky to convey the same message.
Rugs, rugs galore! A sad grey patio or decking area can be cheered up with an ingenious creation; the garden rug (made from weather resistant materials but with all the same beauty of an indoor rug). It’s also important within the bohemian theme to have as

PICTURE PERFECT S
o you’ve got of thousands of photo albums on Facebook, a stock that is enthusiastically contributed to on a regular basis, but how many of your most precious memories are accessible without a mobile device or computer? Making the effort to properly display your photos can be such a rewarding experience. Hanging memories on your wall conjures up those feelings again, and provides an opportunity for man’s favourite pass time (presumably) - reminiscing. Be it on a bar stool, relaxing with family or bumping into an old friend, reminiscing is a big part of our lives, you may even find that having your favourite milestones on display give you a sense of renewed pride in your life decisions each time you see them.
some contrast used between subject and background. Once you’ve found the right spot, a clear plain space that is calling out for some character, you’re ready for step 2.
Step 2: Light
Deciding how the ‘gallery’ will be lit has a big effect on how it is received, for instance if the photos you have chosen are old black and white photos you will want them lit brightly with spotlights so they are easier to view from a distance, probably aided by some natural light. Whereas photos of higher resolution can be viewed quite easily even in low light which leaves it all down to personal preference.
“Here’s a quick step-by-step guide to creating a photo gallery in your home...”
Here’s a quick step-by-step guide to creating an art gallery in your home that celebrates you and your loved ones.
Step 1: Position
Picking the right place in your home is an important step, you don’t want to pick an area that is tucked into a corner where nobody ever spends any time. As you can see in the example images, the wall colour doesn’t particularly matter, so long as there is
Step 3: Framing
At this stage you can make the most of a contrast effect to draw attention to your ‘gallery’. Black and white photos look particularly chic with a white border and black frame, but they can look equally impressive with a plain white frame. If you visit a framing shop they will give you a comprehensive understanding of how to pick something appropriate to compliment your homes style. We hope you enjoy sharing your photos on real walls as well as virtual ones!

Norovirus Dr Louise T
his time of the year, there are so many different bugs in circulation and they can affect people in many different ways. Recently, I have seen many patients with symptoms of nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea and have diagnosed gastroenteritis. The most common cause for gastroenteritis in the UK is norovirus. Noroviruses are actually a group of viruses that can cause an infection in your gut and they can readily spread by close contact with an infected person (usually touching their hands after they have been to the toilet). It can take 24-48 hours after contact with the person for the norovirus to cause symptoms. The first symptom is usually feeling sick (nausea) and then you are likely to be sick fairly soon after. Other symptoms may include feeling hot and feverish, having a headache and also having aches and pains in your muscles. The diarrhoea associated with these infections can be very profuse and watery. Thankfully, symptoms usually only last a couple of days and so treatment is not usually needed. It is very important that you do not become dehydrated so drinking small amounts regularly is extremely important. Rehydration drinks can be beneficial and sachets can be obtained from the chemist or from your doctor. Young children and babies are more likely to become dehydrated quickly, as can
older or frail people. Taking paracetamol regularly can help with any aches and also the fever. If your symptoms do not improve then your doctor may send a sample of your stool to be tested. If you suspect you are becoming dehydrated, have severe abdominal pain, notice blood in your diarrhoea or if your symptoms persist after several days then you should seek medical advice. It is really important to wash your hands thoroughly after going to the toilet. It is also advisable to not share towels or flannels too. Despite all this, most people get better very quickly and do not need any specific treatment. Dr. Louise Newson BSc(Hons) MBChB(Hons) MRCP FRCGP Dr. Louise R Newson is a part-time GP in Solihull and has written medical books. She is an editor of and writer for many medical publications and is often in the media speaking on her speciality of Menopause & HRT. louise.newson@me.com

Claims Against Estates The case of Heather llott’s claim against her late mother’s estate has been widely reported. There has been much commentary about whether the law has been clarified for adult children who have been left out of a parent’s Will, following the ruling of the Supreme Court in March. Heather Ilott was left out of her estranged mother’s Will, who instead left her estate of approximately £500,000 to three animal charities that she had no connection with during her lifetime.

Judge who awarded Heather £50,000. On appeal the Court of Appeal gave Heather £143,000 to buy a house and a further £20,000. Now, 10 years after the case was originally heard, seven Supreme Court judges have reinstated the original award of £50,000. This case has not changed the law - it is not easier or harder to bring these sorts of claims following this ruling. If you are an adult child and you have been left out of your parent’s Will, our advice remains the same - seek specialist advice early on to establish whether your financial circumstances bring you within the range of awards a court is likely to make. The basic test is whether you can show what might be reasonably required for your ongoing maintenance. The court has a wide discretion, making these sorts of claims difficult to predict in terms of what award, if any, will be made. Equally, if you are thinking of disinheriting a child, do not be lulled into

BUSINESS & FINANCE thinking that it is now easier to do this. Heather’s case does not mean that you can now leave your estate to whomever you choose, without fear of challenge. There are steps you can take to make it harder for a disinherited child to challenge your Will but you cannot prevent the prospect of it entirely. You should regularly review and update your Will to take account of the changing nature of family relationships and the financial circumstances of your children.

If you are thinking about disinheriting a child, even one that might be estranged, you should always take specialist advice. The cost of taking timely, measured and expert advice will be a fraction of the costs your estate will potentially face if it becomes embroiled in lengthy and costly litigation caused by a badly drafted Will, or a Will that fails to take account of changing family circumstances.
