EDITOR’S WELCOME

Welcome to your guide to the festive season. This issue we have listed some of the most exciting shows and events coming up to celebrate Halloween, Bonfire night and the Christmas period in style. From the classic tradition of ‘The Nutcracker’ performance, to magnificent firework displays, this is the season to be jolly and to get out and about rubbing shoulders with the neighbours. Our cover story focuses on Birmingham homegrown talent Benjamin Zephaniah, whose contribution to British culture spans over five decades, who has been awarded honorary doctorates from universities across the country and was included in The Times’ list of 50 greatest postwar writers. We spread the word about some of his more recent accomplishments, most notably Zephaniah’s role in the award-winning TV drama ‘Peaky Blinders’ as street preacher Jeremiah Jesus. In other local happenings we bring you an in depth feature on all things seasonal at Resorts World which has now been part of the local retail and leisure scene for two years since its launch in October 2015.

All the best,

Ruby & Amy

BENJA ZEPHA Poet

Lyricist

T

his born and bred Brummie has been popping up everywhere lately, and spreading his messages of awareness (and action) to a larger audience with each new accomplishment - so if you haven’t been aware of his movements you must be living under a rock! Zephaniah has carved out a memorable cameo role in the award winning TV drama, ‘Peaky Blinders’ set in 1919 Birmingham as street preacher Jeremiah Jesus, all the while continuing his quest for liberation of marginalised and overlooked peoples of the world.

8

Most Brummies of a certain generation can trace their knowledge of this keen-minded and proud Rastafarian back to school days, where his political opinions were being felt strongly in the classroom. His controversial poems were able to reach over social hurdles and find their way into our literature text books, which I remember finding surprising even as a primary school student. His ability to break down complex socio-political issues into succinct matter-of-fact verses gave him a direct line into the hearts of many, he called this ‘street politics’. Our Robin Hood of the early 70s, claiming the art of poetry from the elite and giving back to the common man, opening up a stage for

important issues that had largely been ignored. So where did it all begin for Benjamin Zephaniah? He started his career at ten years old performing at his local church. By the age of 15 he had already gathered a significant following in his neighbourhood, Handsworth, which he affectionately referred to as the Jamaican capital of Europe. Seeking a bigger audience than the Afro-Caribbean and Asian communities he preached to embolden, he moved to London where bigger change could happen, and from there he has taken his inspiration around the world.

Musician

What are the latest happenings with this restless man of many talents? His new album ‘Revolutionary Minds’ was released on September 1st and is available now! He and his band have been touring some of the more intimate summer festivals - Latitude, Womad, Shambala, Boomtown, and here are some upcoming gigs you can still get involved in throughout autumn:

In the meantime we’re look forward to the return of the fantastically compelling Peaky Blinders’ fourth season and keeping our fingers crossed for another cameo from our cheeky Brummie street preacher, Benjamin Zephaniah. P.S. - Couldn’t we get a petition going to get him involved in the next Mostly Jazz Fest? Or the next Lunar Fest? It’s about time!

Winter warrior / sleek as snow

FUR & velvet for HIM

Rugged winter looks are creeping into our fashion fantasy subconsious because of shows like Game of Thrones, so it’s great to find a way to make these wild looks highstreet appropriate. All greys and browns have the effect of camoflaging into a wintery landscape and the sheepskin coat has that element of warrior of ancient times. Release your wild alter ego with this risque look! Velvet looks cosy but stays sharp. With velvet you can look dressed up but also seasonal and perhaps even a touch festive!

Feathers & fluff for HER Flouncing the feathers and flaunting the fur Peacocking in winter isnt always easy when you need to wear layer upon layer of clothes, but you can ruffle a few feathers with a spicy evening look. (see left) Oversized fluffy statement jackets are an absolute winter essential, especially for those lazy days when an outfit just isn’t coming together fast enough - you chuck this over the top and create instant glamour.

HEALTH

LEISURE & RETAIL

Aston Villa players with Paula and Paul Rastrick.

Yoga, pilates & physio all in one place?

Too good to be true?

T

his is not an advert! I want to highlight an excellent new enterprise that will be a benefit to many. We all need exercise. It’s fact. Our body functions most efficiently when we’re working it. But there’s exercise that’s hard and makes you go red in the face or there’s the kind that stretches and strengthens, in a gentler more harmonious way.

Just arrived in Knowle is an enterprise that will bring just pinkness and health to your cheeks. A husband and wife team have combined forces and opened a studio and clinic offering Yoga, Pilates, physiotherapy and other services. Paul Rastrick worked at Aston Villa FC for 14 years as a physiotherapist. Paula began working there too and for 7 years was the Pilates and Yoga instructor. Martin O’Neill, the team’s then manager, understood the benefits of these disciplines to strengthen and condition the players. Whilst there Paula carried out her own research using a goalkeeper as a guinea pig to prove that yoga was able to improve movement efficiency. Ten weeks later, the evidence was

14

obvious. Word spread and her Yoga classes grew more popular with 65 footballers of all ages taking daily instruction. Paula has created a unique programme for children aged 9 -18yrs old which includes positive psychology combined with yoga but her focus is particularly on women’s health and wellbeing. One on one time with a customer is important to her as she gains understanding of their psychology and demands of what is needed. Much of the time it’s about de-stressing for which yoga is known to be a benefit. It also helps back pain, postoperative breast cancer and sleeping issues amongst many other things. Paula and Paul have poured their hearts into creating a perfect space in Knowle. Classes benefit all ages and abilities, body and mind. Our lives can be stressful…which takes an enormous toll on the functioning of the immune system and general health. What could be better than to treat yourself to some downtime at Paul & Paula’s Physiyolates Centre. Written by Julia Parsons

LEGAL & FINANCIAL

Are you

recruiting?

I

f you are recruiting staff - whether on a self-employed basis, hiring workers or employing staff directly - the law is an ever changing minefield of regulations you need to comply with. In a high profile Employment Tribunal case taxi drivers engaged by e-commerce taxi firm Uber have been recognised as workers rather than self-employed contractors. The judgment means that Uber could face a significant increase to its costs base, in having to pay drivers holiday and sick pay. Uber is currently appealing this decision. Jas Dubb, employment law specialist at The Wilkes Partnership advises on how businesses can protect against and minimise their risk of facing similar types of claim. Businesses such as Uber fall into a new business category commonly referred to as the ‘gig economy’, which often use on-line platforms to sell goods and services. Many e-commerce businesses have historically engaged staff on zero hour contracts to minimise their overheads. Examples of these type of businesses include the likes of Deliveroo, Uber and CitySprint cycle courier. This flexible work arrangement has been hugely beneficial to the running

costs of the business, as they often class staff as ‘self-employed’ who are then responsible for their own tax and National Insurance contributions. But this arrangement has come in for criticism as it makes life difficult for those workers who have no fixed income, are unable to make financial plans and have reduced employment rights. “We are seeing more and more e-commerce businesses emerging and the law is playing catch up with the way these businesses recruit and retain staff”. It is therefore absolutely vital for businesses to seek advice from a specialist who can prepare tailored contracts specific to the needs of the business and legally compliant. “We also act on behalf of employees, workers and the self-employed. Many of these individual seek advice on whether they are entitled to basic rights such as sick pay, holiday entitlement and notice pay”. For advice on any employment related matter and to discuss our Free Employment Health Check for your business please contact Jas Dubb at The Wilkes Partnership on 0121 233 4333.

LEGAL & FINANCIAL

Length

Should the of a Marriage Determine the

Divorce Settlement? Should the length of a marriage play a part in deciding what each spouse should receive on divorce? To what extent should other factors be taken into account, like the contribution each person has made to the joint finances? The legal starting point is that there should be equality on divorce. This is known as the ‘sharing principle.’ However, one of the factors that can lead a court to move away from the sharing principle is the length of the marriage, as in a recent case.

The legal starting point is that there should be equality on divorce. This is known as the ‘sharing principle.’ 16

were around £100,000 each. However, the wife received discretionary annual bonuses which had totalled £10.5million during the marriage. There was no agreement that the couple should maintain separate finances but there had never been a joint bank account or any joint investments. The husband was not aware of the details of the wife’s bonuses and the wife fully funded the couple’s holidays, the purchase of two of their houses, and bought three Aston Martin cars for her husband. The marriage broke down and the wife started divorce proceedings in December 2013. What Does the Law Say? The Court must consider a number of factors when deciding the division of assets. This includes the age of the parties, the length of the marriage and the contributions from both parties, financial and otherwise, including raising children. Whilst the duration of the marriage is a factor, it is not the only factor to be assessed.

Sharp v Sharp This career-focussed couple were both in their 40s and were married in June 2009. They had no children. The wife was a trader and the husband was employed by an international IT company. Their basic salaries

LEGAL & FINANCIAL The Court’s Initial Decision In Mr and Mrs Sharp’s case, their total assets were £6.9 million, and the husband sought a total financial package worth £3million. The judge found no sufficient reason to depart from the sharing principle and awarded the husband £2.725 million. The wife appealed on the basis that: • this was a short, dual career childless marriage • that the couple structured their finances in a particular way The Court of Appeal awarded the husband £2million.

It’s easy to

A

rguably the most valuable commodity in a gorgeous and relaxing home is natural sunlight. A small or large space can be awakened by a generous splash of daylight, and has been scientifically proven to lift the spirits. Sometimes you can justify having a new window fitted, and sometimes it’s better to find a more economic alternative. Thankfully there are options which do not seek to replicate natural light, but extend it through the house. Here are some exciting ideas we found… Peek-a-boo! It may seem counterintuitive for a door to lack the privacy of opaqueness, but living areas of the home needn’t be cordoned off with such absolution. Closing off parts of the house in this manner can be necessary for bedrooms and bathrooms (to avoid any uncomfortable encounters!)

but downstairs open-plan living is the way forward for functional family life. One easy way to achieve this without going mad with a sledge hammer is installing French doors. They can shut out noise and create a separate space but without entirely shutting it off from the other living spaces. Sledge-hammer time? Not to be attempted by a non-professional (unless you’d like to risk severe structural problems being inflicted on your house) widening out doorways to create a double doorway or feature arch, will dispel the isolation of a room and involve it in family life. This trick not only opens up small rooms to give the illusion of added space, it is also great for when you’re entertaining

guests or hosting parties by continuing the jolly party atmosphere throughout the house. Sliding doors It’s an archway, then it’s a door, what is this witchcraft? If you don’t want to commit to the open-plan living style, sliding doors offer the best of both worlds. They save space, they open up a big wide doorway for parties, and they close up and return the room to an intimate space when the time calls for it. It’s so simple and yet so brilliant. hy leave the beauty behind in your favourite holiday destinations? Bring a bit of European charm to your garden and indulge in overseas artistry all year round!

Greek Greek gardens are typically designed to embrace extreme weathers, and with the 32 degree summers and harsh sleeting/snowing/hailing winters we’ve faced in recent years it couldn’t hurt to steal a few ideas. To be more accurate, the typical homeowner in Greece did not always have a garden, and soil with any useful properties was scarce, so they instead decorated the cobbled pavements outside their

Turkish Turkey is known to be more than bridge between east and west, it is a marriage of the two. You can particularly see elements of Moroccan style mixing with Greek, and generally influences from across Europe and the Middle East. Most traditional Turkish gardens are small courtyards often paved and enclosed, so this is a particularly wonderful theme for a small garden, but can be just as suited to a large space. Turkish gardens for this reason often feel like an entire living room has been moved outside, or a garden has been moved inside, it skates a thin line between the two bringing together cushions and carpets with lanterns and water features. Water is a crucial element, and is almost always present in a traditional courtyard garden, surrounded by gorgeous blue mosaic. Cacti and other hot climate plants are best suited to this style of garden, and it’s just a bonus that they need very little attention, in fact, this may be the lowest maintenance garden around.

Italian The first thing to consider when creating an Italian garden is symmetry, so if you are pedantic about keeping everything neat and tidy this is definitely the garden for you. Many elements of what is considered a traditional English garden actually took inspiration from Italian Renaissance gardens, especially the sculptured topiary, neatly weaving gravel pathways and the elegant use of water. Water was particularly important to Renaissance garden designs because of its ability to create mood and drama. These grand designs can be easily scaled down from the several acre grounds of mansions we are used to seeing at National Trust estates typical Italian gardens are far more rustic and homely. So while bearing in mind the classic elements along with cypress trees and a few statues you can create something stunningly glorious yet spatially feasible.

homes. This is the central idea for the ‘classically Greek’ garden, it involves neutral backdrops of pale stone with archways, olive trees, and drought-tolerant vividly-coloured flowering climbers. A shaded terrace is often a feature in Greek gardens too, to shelter from extreme summers - basking in the beams of light that pierce overhanging ivy. Symmetry is actually a concept that the ancient Greeks pioneered, so incorporating some mirroring in the layout will celebrate this historical fact and its widespread impact on world cultures.

BAN ON PARKING AROUND SOLIHULL SCHOOLS

Mums and dads of children at three schools will be banned from driving and parking near schools as part of the controversial traffic-busting scheme.

NEW FUNDRAISING DORMOUSE BEER LAUNCHED AT BEER FESTIVAL Warwickshire Wildlife Trust launched the brand new Malthouse Dormouse ale at its annual beer festival in September. The new ale is inspired by the re-introduction of endangered hazel dormice earlier this year in a secret Warwickshire location. The dormice, released into a woodland in June this year, have been exploring their new habitat and hopefully producing the next generation. Their release inspired Gavin Leach, Director of new Leamington Spa brewery, Windmill Hill to brew a new real ale. Malthouse Dormouse is a light, fruity ale, with hints of citrus and orange and will be available to sample for the first time at the beer festival. Money raised from the sale of the brand new ale will support the work of Warwickshire Wildlife Trust. Gavin Leach, Director of Windmill Hill said “I was inspired by the work Warwickshire Wildlife Trust were doing in the local area and wanted to give something back.

The pilot project, launched by Solihull Council, will mean drivers who breach the rules will be slapped with a fine. Residents will be issued with permits to access the roads, and emergency services will also be exempt. Haslucks Green Junior School, Marston Green Infant Academy and Oak Cottage Primary School have all signed up to the scheme, after nearby householders flagged up concerns about road safety and inconsiderate parking. New signage will be put up in the roads and will be regulated by traffic officers. The initiative, which was also trialled in Edinburgh, is aimed at encouraging children and parents to walk, cycle or scoot to school.

LOCAL FORMER LANCE CORPORAL, STEVEN BOULTON HEADS TO TORONTO COMPETE IN THE INVICTUS GAMES Steven, a 26-year-old production operative in Solihull, is a former Lance Corporal in the Army and served two tours of Iraq as a tank driver after joining in 2007 and serving nine years including his rehabilitation. His vehicle hit an IED during his second tour and he suffered an amputation of his left leg below the knee, nerve damage to his right foot and a traumatic brain injury which required a year of rehabilitation. Steven is also a veteran of the Invictus Games having competed in Orlando in wheelchair rugby where the UK Team won a bronze medal. And having made the team again, Steven insists he wants to go even better this year. NEW TOWN PROPOSALS BETWEEN BHAM AND COVENTRY Proposals for a new town are being put forward by the UK Central Solihull Urban Growth Company (UGC). The new ‘urban quarter’, which would create 4,000 new homes, is earmarked for land next to Birmingham Airport and would be based around the HS2 high speed railway interchange due to be built in the area.
