Not a man holding a cabbage Photographs by Dave Travis

UB40’s saxaphonist Brian Travers tells us about his art exhibition #POP - Let me paint you a picture… We sat in a pretty window seat at the Village Pub illuminated by a twenty-something degree day. I texted ahead of time to inform him I’d be the one with the massive hair, and he said he’d be the one with the silly hat. What a picture. Brian was quick to assure me his heart is in abstract art, ‘I love that it challenges the viewer, it makes them work for its meaning’ he told me - upon reflection I feel I have been quite a lazy viewer, and am eager to look at his show with a new approach. ‘Figurative art, it’s like the voice of the fat controller isn’t it?... “this man is holding a cabbage!”’ Brian declared playfully. I must say I agree. #POP showcases - among other things - Brian’s willingness to explore many avenues of his own artistic spectrum; every piece has been painted specifically for this show and is displayed on canvas, glass and ‘some surprises.’ I can’t tell you what the show is about because you need to decide for yourself, but the

passion inside it is evocative of the freedom and vibrancy of street art, with a definite nod to Andy Warhol and the Pop Art movement. Painting has been a part of Brian’s life since before he began his musical career with UB40 and offers him some therapeutic liberation, “painting is a great release from living a very public life, time just melts away,” he told me. Showing no signs of slowing down he’s touring all over the world again with UB40 this year and won’t be back until their England tour October 2nd-24th. “I just want to put something nice in the world, whatever I’m doing, peaceful pursuits... don’t harm anyone.” Ruby Watson

Mortgage Advice on your Local High Street For most of us, taking out a mortgage to buy a home is the biggest financial commitment we’ll ever make. Whether you are a first time buyer or looking to move up the property ladder, it pays to shop around, seek professional advice and ultimately find the deal that’s right for you and your individual circumstances. The West Brom is the seventh largest building society in the UK and committed to doing the best for its customers. Liese Moeller, who manages the Harborne branch on High Street, said: “Mortgage rates have hit record lows, which presents opportunities for new borrowers and existing ones who want a better deal to reduce their monthly repayments. “As a regional lender we have a good understanding of the local housing market, plus a range of fixed and variable rate mortgage products which are competitively priced to meet our customers’ needs. “Some of our mortgages include incentives designed to cut the cost of borrowing, such

8

as no completion fees, valuation charges and legal fees paid for, and occasionally even cashback once the purchase completes. “Details of our latest offers are available on the West Brom website, but we are also happy to provide face to face advice in the Harborne branch or talk over the telephone if that’s more convenient.” With so much competition for mortgage business between lenders, Liese believes prospective borrowers should make sure they understand the true cost of any agreement before committing to it. “It’s easy to be enticed by a particularly low interest rate, not realising that there might be expensive fees and extra charges to pay on top,” she said. “These can quickly neutralise the benefit of paying less per month, so be sure to work out the overall cost involved and stick within your budget.”

fails to control his team he should be sent to his basket without a bone! So far the boys in Baggy Green have been pretty well behaved.

As England won a great series against New Zealand with runs coming by the hundred, Edgbaston played an important role.

On a local note, Jonathan Trott was in the Sky Sports commentary box recently and amused me when he referred to the Birmingham Bears as Warwickshire.

Great credit to groundsman Gary Barwell and his team for preparing a track which saw England post a record 408-9 and thrash Brendan McCullum’s side by 210 runs! Given what has happened at Cardiff and Lord’s one wonders what sort of wicket Gary has been asked to prepare for the arrival of Australia? When Steve Rouse was in charge who could forget Brian Lara scoring 501 not out against Durham. My one concern is the spirit of the game as exemplified by New Zealand. Michael Clarke’s nickname is Pup and if the Australian captain

Those of us of a certain age are still getting used to the power of marketing and its role in sport but if it attracts more youngsters to the game then it has my total blessing. Enjoy your cricket! When you think of a shed, you just don’t imagine the possibilities. It’s understandable, if you’ve never seen an incredible shed then you can’t be expected to dream one up out of thin air. So here are the dreams you never had... but be warned, the love you feel for these sheds cannot be undone! Nervous of nature tree house shed Firstly we have the shed for the slightly bug phobic. Massive windows stretch from floor to high ceiling on two sides of the structure giving the illusion of being immersed in rich garden greenery without actually having spiders and flies in your hair. If you have a beautiful garden that you attempt to sit in peacefully and the wildlife chases you back out of it, this is the shed for you. King of the garden We know who’s king of the jungle, but who’s king of the garden? Well every king needs a castle don’t they? This incredible creation might even have you questioning why you would ever leave your garden, the furnace out front makes this a cosy little hideaway both day and night. Finishing touches that make this idea extra special are the castle name plaque, the beautiful ornaments and ornate decor, this is truly fit for garden royalty.

Almighty office shed This shed means business. No office rental fees, no parking costs, no long commute to the office, plus you add value to you home. That’s right, the gift that keeps on giving is the almighty office shed. This stylish addition to your garden is an all-round winner, not only can it save you stacks of money in the long run it also affords you total creative freedom over what kind of weird and wonderful place you work in. Supporting schools in Malawi This summer Miss Lucy Ward, a teacher at The Blue Coat School, is setting off with a team of teachers from Birmingham to lead Teaching Skillshare Workshops in Malawi as part of the Birmingham-Malawi partnership. They will be presenting two week-long residential workshops, sharing lots of active and participatory teaching ideas. Children at Blue Coat have been fundraising in a variety of ways to help cover the costs of the workshops for the Malawian teachers, so enabling them to attend. The children have been fantastic in supporting the project, sprinting round the running track in a sponsored tag marathon or dashing up and down the pool in a sponsored swim. They had great fun participating, and know that it will make a huge difference!

18

School’s out for summer… …But before you know it September will be here with the start of the new school year. This is a crucial time for any child, particularly if they are going into year five. This is the time you cannot continue putting off thinking about which secondary school they will go to. We spoke to a local private tutor who gives us a few tips on how to best prepare our children for this next big step in their lives. Terry Greaves of Primary Plus has a few words of advice: 1. Think about secondary school places now, visit open days and decide if you are going to aim for grammar 2. Be aware standards for grammar schools get higher every year 3. Be aware primary schools do not prepare children for the 11 plus 4. Even the brightest children will benefit from some tutoring to give them the best chance of getting into a grammar school 5. If you are not thinking about a grammar school then starting secondary school with the best possible SAT results will set your children off on the right path 6. Children are streamed in year 7 and rarely move between streams later on

Terry said: “Tutoring need not be seen as hot-housing. Your child may have particular areas they are struggling with and in a busy class environment these can be overlooked. With more individualised personal attention, these areas are tackled helping children to be more confident in all aspects of learning, and that is reflected in the span of children's ages in our sessions. “At Primary Plus we offer a free initial assessment which enables us to give you a clear idea of your child’s potential. “If, after that, you decide to bring your child to our tutoring sessions, we will help them improve their performance and confidence.” Primary Plus is located in the Jewellery Quarter with on-street parking. There are two dedicated teaching rooms that can accommodate up to six children. Teaching sessions are 90 minutes long on weekdays and Saturdays. Teaching focuses on general literacy and numeracy support, SAT preparation and 11 plus preparation.

Esteemed Historian David Starkey Gives Lecture at Edgbaston High School For Girls Edgbaston High School for Girls was delighted to welcome Dr David Starkey, one of the country’s most respected and well-known historians and television personalities. An audience of students and parents gathered as Dr Starkey gave a lecture to mark the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta, delivering a stimulating and thought-provoking lecture on the evolution of the charter into the foundations of an English constitution. He also signed copies of his new book Magna Carta which has been written to commemorate the anniversary of this seminal historical document. This event is just one aspect of a broad educational offering at Edgbaston High School, where girls benefit from a 21st century education based on traditional values. Dr Ruth Weeks, Headmistress, says: “EHS offers an enriched educational experience; pupils make excellent academic progress and achieve high standards in their work whilst benefitting from a strong and distinctive system of pastoral care where emphasis is placed on nurturing each girl’s strengths and raising self-esteem. “We wholeheartedly encourage our girls to be independent, to face new challenges

and to acquire new skills. Combined with excellent teaching this unique approach offers our pupils a truly rounded education.” EHS is an independent school for girls. One of the features of EHS is the continuity of education it offers: the Nursery, Prep, Senior and Sixth Form departments on site work together to cater for girls aged between two and a half to eighteen years. The School offers excellent standards of teaching alongside state-of-the-art facilities including the 600 seat Octagon performance space, a spacious Sixth Form Centre, swimming pool, athletics track and hockey field.

Parents and children find middle ground with screen-free holiday camps If you are looking for something to keep your children occupied this summer, where they can have fun, exercise and make friends, then you are spoilt for choice in Harborne and Edgbaston. Together, these camps offer an incredible range of awesome activities so that children have the opportunity to try something new every day and develop new skills. Whether they decide to try something new or do more of something they know they love, flexibility and development is at the heart of the Ultimate Activity Camp at King Edward VI High School in Edgbaston. With activities including zorbing, fencing, cookery, swimming and escape and evasion, the options combine learning new skills, with exciting activities and social development - the only thing missing are screens. "We wanted to create an environment where children were kept active and inspired, trying new things and building their confidence around other children. With children spending so much of their time in front of screens

these days, we wanted to create a screenfree space where they're having so much fun, they don't even miss them. Based on feedback from previous years, we seem to be succeeding too." says Ben Prior, Ultimate Activity Camps' founder and director. The camp runs up until the end of August at King Edward VI High School in Edgbaston and can be booked by the day or by the week with flexible cancellation policies.

Prices start from ÂŁ40 for a day. More information can be found online at www.ultimateactivity.co.uk/ or by calling 0844 870 7077

Does your Lawn need a visit to the Health Spa? The British weather can be very cruel to our gardens. We’ve had a cold April, a miserable May, barely any rain in June and record temperatures in July. Lawns are generally very resilient but they really don’t like extremes, be it high temperatures or lack of rainfall. All is not lost as autumn is the perfect time to renovate your lawn and set it up for next spring. Scarification, a mechanical raking process that removes dead and decaying grass in the lawn is just what’s needed. You’ll be amazed how much you can get out of a lawn! If you have a more powerful scarifier, this will cut deeper and create the perfect seed bed to over seed your lawn by spreading a modern blend of seed. The seed will germinate over

autumn and thicken next spring, giving your lawn a great start to the year. You can do the renovation yourself but if you don’t have the right machinery or can’t face raking and bagging up all the dead material then help is at hand. If you’d like some help with renovating your lawn then please call Scott Harrison,

MHA Bloomer Heaven Announce Merger with MHA MacIntyre Hudson. City Centre based accountancy firm MHA Bloomer Heaven has merged with UK top 20 accountancy firm MHA MacIntyre Hudson in a move that will enhance the range of services it provides to its clients. The firm will now be known as MHA MacInytre Hudson. Since 2011, MHA Bloomer Heaven have been members of MHA, an association of independent accountancy firms located around the UK, and in 2014 Bloomer Heaven re branded to include MHA in its name. The merger will not impact on the current operations of MHA Bloomer Heaven, all four directors will remain in post and the Birmingham office will continue to be headed by Chris Barlow. MHA Bloomer Heaven has in recent years pursued its plan for significant growth both in its client base and the range of services it provides this merger will further support the ambitious growth plans for the firm in both the short and long term. MHA Bloomer Heaven will remain at their home in Edmund Street in the heart of the Colmore Business District and will continue to focus on building its reputation within the owner manager and SME’s sector particularly in manufacturing, property and not for profit, but the merger will now enable the business to have the scale and resource to significantly build on its client portfolio.

Chris Barlow, Managing Director MHA Bloomer Heaven is excited about what the merger will mean for existing and new clients; “This is a very exciting and important development in the history of our firm. In recent years we have continued to build both on the range of services to our clients and the way in which we deliver them. This merger with MHA MacIntyre Hudson now means we are able to offer an even greater breadth of services, expertise and knowledge which we believe will further support the wide range of businesses we work with.

Rakesh Shaunak, Chairman of MHA MacIntyre Hudson commented; “Birmingham and the wider West Midlands region is an exciting marketplace for us with the many significant developments taking place not least the growth potential across many sectors of business.”

Spoilt for choice 3 exciting ideas for your loft space... The Far-Away loft A place where even your five year old boys understand the meaning of serenity - it is possible. This is a no-toy zone, books only! Lots of skylights bring in a wonderful glow all day, the ceilings are fairly low so running rampage isn’t really an option. It’s that special place where you can get lost in a book and let your mind be totally free. And at night, a lava lamp projector can fill the room with supernatural mystique - another great storytelling setting. Balcony Envy Who doesn’t love a balcony? They drip with sophistication and provide a regal view of the neighbourhood. You may think that ship has sailed, you’ve bought the house you want to settle down in, and as balcony-less as it is you are intent on staying. Well I’m here to tell you there is still hope. There are so many options, from a simple little skylight that folds out, to a fully terraced roof area.

Loft Spa Everybody loves to get pampered, they may protest at first but once it’s complete I’ll bet the man of the house will suddenly go missing for hours at a time up on the indulgence floor. This room could be everything your ordinary bathroom never could, it’s not just the loo, it’s not just the wash room, it’s the loft spa. You might want to invest in an appointment book too! Moseley Folk Festival The magic that sleeps in Moseley private park is being awoken yet again for the 10th annual folk festival, 4-6 September Moseley Folk Festival is held in Moseley Park, a stunning 11-acre woodland glade in the heart of Moseley Village. Although it’s just 2 miles from the centre of Birmingham it is a world away from city life. A place where fauns, pixies, fairies and witches are all welcome. I bet you’ve been waiting for this since you walked out on the last day of the festival last year, full to the brim with life enriching sparkle. If I could create such a dreamy setting in my garden I would, but for the moment I am entirely reliant on the wonderfully imaginative folks who aucustrate this colourful affair. This year we will be welcoming fabulous headliners ‘The Monkees’ all the way from California, along with ‘Spiritualised’ an English space rock band and ‘Idlewild’ a Scottish indie rock band just to name a few in the juicy mix. Showcasing unsigned acts right next to wellestablished international artists makes for a really exciting bill. Your tummies are in for a treat too… At Moseley Folk Festival you’ll find a well stocked real ale and cider bar complemented with fine locally sourced foods including organic roast pig, freshly made falafels, smoked fish, crêpes, award-winning Thali and Caribbean delicacies. Judy at Tyndallwoods Solicitors said: “My young friend Riya Dandekar was diagnosed with Anaplastic Lymphoma at the beginning of 2014.” In response to this devastating diagnosis Riya vowed to sign up more life-saving donors so that others do not face the same heartbreaking situation. During the last year of her life she set in motion a campaign for stem cell donors. Sadly on the 31st December Riya lost her battle with cancer.

Team Riya continues Riya’s legacy to seek stem cell donors for charities Anthony Nolan and Delete Blood Cancer. Judy continued: “I joined Team Riya in this year’s 5k Race for Life in Cannon Hill Park. Also, I am honoured to be appointed Ambassador for Birmingham: United We Will Beat Cancer by Cancer Research UK and in July welcomed Lord Digby Jones as he spoke to a gathering of business leaders about the benefits of Corporate Social Responsibility and how businesses could benefit from supporting Cancer Research UK. World class scientists also discussed the latest innovative research taking place at the Birmingham University Campus.”

5 reasons your will might be out of date or invalid Having a robust will is critical to ensuring our loved ones as little grief as possible when the inevitable happens. 1. If you enter into marriage or form a civil partnership.

Tyndallwoods footer for use

This automatically revokes any will that is in place unless it was made in contemplation of that marriage or civil partnership.

2. The birth of a baby, whether your own or a grandchild. New parents should update their will to appoint guardians and grandparents may want to ensure that their grandchildren are included as beneficiaries.

3. The sale or purchase of a house, in the UK or overseas. To ensure the person you intend inherits what is often your largest asset.

4. If you go through a divorce or bring a civil partnership to an end. This applies to you, your children or any beneficiary in the will.

5. Changes in tax legislation. Recent changes can mean that your will can be simplified. 29 Woodbourne Road Edgbaston Birmingham B17 8BY edgbaston@tyndallwoods.co.uk Car parking on site

Clare Martin

Indeed, according to Clare there is no need for wills to be written in difficult to understand legal jargon. They can be written in plain English and often only need to be one or two pages long. “A well written will should give you peace of mind, not confuse you,” she says.

This list is by no means exhaustive. If you would like to have your will reviewed or need any advice regarding the preparation of a will please contact Clare Martin at Tyndallwoods Solicitors on 0121 693 2222.

Bournville Hockey Club Want You! Now is a great time to get into hockey. After a successful season last year, Bournville Hockey Club is looking to recruit players of all ages and abilities to strengthen their men’s and ladies squads for the upcoming season. Lead by England veteran, Adrian Bailey, and a team of coaches, the club will be running training sessions throughout the summer at King Edward’s School, Edgbaston Park Road, Birmingham, B15 2UB. The sessions will run every Tuesday during August up until 1st September from 6.45-8pm.

The final training session will be followed up by the annual Bournville Club Day on September 5th from 2pm. This showpiece event will pitch men, ladies and younger players, all in mixed ability teams, against each other in a round robin tournament, ahead of a BBQ and drinks party.

The first two sessions will be free of charge and then a small fee will be applied for subsequent sessions.

So, whatever your ability or age, Bournville Hockey Club can offer you the opportunity to play and enjoy hockey at any standard.

The aim of these sessions will be to teach and refresh basic skills and then end with a game to put those skills into practice. Elite players will be exposed to higherlevel coaching, whilst less experienced, or those coming back into the game, will have the opportunity to work in smaller groups to build up skills and confidence.
