Take an unexpected journey… to Sarehole Mill! You don’t have to look very deeply to see that Birmingham has a lot to be proud of, and in the past 20 years some of our most culturally defining history and literature has reached a global audience. At times Birmingham does feel quite grey and industrial, other times you stumble into little pockets of paradise. These are all characteristics of our city that inspired one of the most internationally acclaimed fantasy authors of all time, J.R.R Tolkien. His famous trilogy The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit have become blockbuster hit films and it all started right here. Tolkien’s books are a celebration of many areas of Birmingham and its extreme diversity, from the idyllic rose tinted Shire (Sarehole Mill) to the industrially blackened two towers (Perrotts Folly and Edgbaston Waterworks tower). All of these sites have been so well preserved that you can still see them as Tolkien did in the early 1900’s which is what makes Middle Earth Festival such a special event. The annual open air festivities take place where

Sam and Frodo’s journey began - in the Shire, and your adventures can begin there too! Whether you’re a major fan (like me!) or not you’re sure to enjoy this quirky event, it’s a family friendly affair and you might just find yourself having more fun than the kids. Ruby Watson

Zero carbon house opens its doors “I’ve seen the future - and it’s in Birmingham”: that’s how The Times described zero carbon house in Balsall Heath. A special open day will give visitors a rare chance to see for themselves.

This private family home, not normally open to the public, is the UK’s first retrofit house to “zero carbon” standard (Code for Sustainable Homes level 6). It generates all its own renewable energy with no use of fossil fuels (and no fuel bills!) and has won design awards including Civic Trust and RIBA Architecture Award. An intriguing mix of old and new, the original 1840 terraced house has been substantially extended in 2009 from a 2-bed to a 4-bed house with studio loft. All are welcome to the open day on

Saturday 12 September, 11am-4pm at 103 Tindal Street, B12 9QU. There

are talks throughout the day and a special childrens’ presentation at 2pm. Book your place at www.superhomes.org.uk

James Llewellyn from Rice Chamberlains Estates shares his pictorial view of the local market. “As we mentioned in the last edition the Moseley marketplace is really moving and picking up pace since the general election. Prices are increasing and we’re still seeing multi bids being placed – some offers going over asking price.”

“Here are three houses we have sold in the last month that went for over the asking price, which goes to show that now is definitely a good time to sell!” “With a substantial lack of supply now could be the time to make your move and make the most of a buoyant selling market. We’d love to talk to you and let you know how much your home is now worth, it may be good news!” said James.

Not a man holding a cabbage Photographs by Dave Travis

UB40’s saxaphonist Brian Travers tells us about his art exhibition #POP - Let me paint you a picture… We sat in a pretty window seat at the Village Pub illuminated by a twenty-something degree day. I texted ahead of time to inform him I’d be the one with the massive hair, and he said he’d be the one with the silly hat. What a picture. Brian was quick to assure me his heart is in abstract art, ‘I love that it challenges the viewer, it makes them work for its meaning’ he told me - upon reflection I feel I have been quite a lazy viewer, and am eager to look at his show with a new approach. ‘Figurative art, it’s like the voice of the fat controller isn’t it?... “this man is holding a cabbage!”’ Brian declared playfully. I must say I agree. #POP showcases - among other things - Brian’s willingness to explore many avenues of his own artistic spectrum; every piece has been painted specifically for this show and is displayed on canvas, glass and ‘some surprises.’ I can’t tell you what the show is about because you need to decide for yourself, but the

passion inside it is evocative of the freedom and vibrancy of street art, with a definite nod to Andy Warhol and the Pop Art movement. Painting has been a part of Brian’s life since before he began his musical career with UB40 and offers him some therapeutic liberation, “painting is a great release from living a very public life, time just melts away,” he told me. Showing no signs of slowing down he’s touring all over the world again with UB40 this year and won’t be back until their England tour October 2nd-24th. “I just want to put something nice in the world, whatever I’m doing, peaceful pursuits... don’t harm anyone.” Ruby Watson

Esteemed Historian David Starkey Gives Lecture at Edgbaston High School For Girls Edgbaston High School for Girls was delighted to welcome Dr David Starkey, one of the country’s most respected and well-known historians and television personalities. An audience of students and parents gathered as Dr Starkey gave a lecture to mark the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta, delivering a stimulating and thought-provoking lecture on the evolution of the charter into the foundations of an English constitution. He also signed copies of his new book Magna Carta which has been written to commemorate the anniversary of this seminal historical document. This event is just one aspect of a broad educational offering at Edgbaston High School, where girls benefit from a 21st century education based on traditional values. Dr Ruth Weeks, Headmistress, says: “EHS offers an enriched educational experience; pupils make excellent academic progress and achieve high standards in their work whilst benefitting from a strong and distinctive system of pastoral care where emphasis is placed on nurturing each girl’s strengths and raising self-esteem. “We wholeheartedly encourage our girls to be independent, to face new challenges

and to acquire new skills. Combined with excellent teaching this unique approach offers our pupils a truly rounded education.” EHS is an independent school for girls. One of the features of EHS is the continuity of education it offers: the Nursery, Prep, Senior and Sixth Form departments on site work together to cater for girls aged between two and a half to eighteen years. The School offers excellent standards of teaching alongside state-of-the-art facilities including the 600 seat Octagon performance space, a spacious Sixth Form Centre, swimming pool, athletics track and hockey field.

For further information about forthcoming open days, admissions, scholarships and bursaries please contact EHS on 0121 454 5831 or email admissions@ edgbastonhigh.co.uk 15

Supporting schools in Malawi This summer Miss Lucy Ward, a teacher at The Blue Coat School, is setting off with a team of teachers from Birmingham to lead Teaching Skillshare Workshops in Malawi as part of the Birmingham-Malawi partnership. They will be presenting two week-long residential workshops, sharing lots of active and participatory teaching ideas. Children at Blue Coat have been fundraising in a variety of ways to help cover the costs of the workshops for the Malawian teachers, so enabling them to attend. The children have been fantastic in supporting the project, sprinting round the running track in a sponsored tag marathon or dashing up and down the pool in a sponsored swim. They had great fun participating, and know that it will make a huge difference!

Avenue Road or Highbury Road in Kings Heath - which is the best investment? Daniel Sperber of specialist Moseley letting agent IQ Property gives some insight. I was talking to a gentleman last week from the Chantry Road area, who was considering becoming a landlord for the first time. After reading one of my blog posts he had called me to ask for some advice. We arranged to meet at Damascena, a coffee shop just down the road from our office (their coffee is far better than mine) and he asked me whether buying a property on Avenue Road or Highbury Road in Kings Heath would make a better buy to let investment. Moreover, he wanted to know which might offer a better return/yield. I confirmed that the properties on both streets rent well and what’s more to professional tenants, but I wanted to do a bit more research to help him make an informed decision. The average price for a property on Highbury Road is £171,889 whilst on Avenue Road it is just over 3% more at £177,153. To better understand the investment opportunities available, we took a look at the rents achieved over the previous year. Looking just at terraced housing, which is the majority of the properties on both of these roads, we saw that the average rent achieved on Avenue Road was £701pcm, giving a yield/return of 4.7%. On Highbury Road the average rent was slightly lower, at £662pcm, with a corresponding yield/return of 4.6%. Given that there is hardly any difference in the yields/returns between the two streets, it really comes down to the best available property to buy on the day.

Whilst this may not seem like a fantastic revelation, we would not have identified this without the extra investigation. Whether you’re just getting started in property or an experienced landlord I am always on hand to advise so feel free to get in touch.

When you think of a shed, you just don’t imagine the possibilities. It’s understandable, if you’ve never seen an incredible shed then you can’t be expected to dream one up out of thin air. So here are the dreams you never had... but be warned, the love you feel for these sheds cannot be undone! Nervous of nature tree house shed Firstly we have the shed for the slightly bug phobic. Massive windows stretch from floor to high ceiling on two sides of the structure giving the illusion of being immersed in rich garden greenery without actually having spiders and flies in your hair. If you have a beautiful garden that you attempt to sit in peacefully and the wildlife chases you back out of it, this is the shed for you. King of the garden We know who’s king of the jungle, but who’s king of the garden? Well every king needs a castle don’t they? This incredible creation might even have you questioning why you would ever leave your garden, the furnace out front makes this a cosy little hideaway both day and night. Finishing touches that make this idea extra special are the castle name plaque, the beautiful ornaments and ornate decor, this is truly fit for garden royalty.

Almighty office shed This shed means business. No office rental fees, no parking costs, no long commute to the office, plus you add value to you home. That’s right, the gift that keeps on giving is the almighty office shed. This stylish addition to your garden is an all-round winner, not only can it save you stacks of money in the long run it also affords you total creative freedom over what kind of weird and wonderful place you work in. Moseley Folk Festival The magic that sleeps in Moseley private park is being awoken yet again for the 10th annual folk festival, 4-6 September Moseley Folk Festival is held in Moseley Park, a stunning 11-acre woodland glade in the heart of Moseley Village. Although it’s just 2 miles from the centre of Birmingham it is a world away from city life. A place where fauns, pixies, fairies and witches are all welcome. I bet you’ve been waiting for this since you walked out on the last day of the festival last year, full to the brim with life enriching sparkle. If I could create such a dreamy setting in my garden I would, but for the moment I am entirely reliant on the wonderfully imaginative folks who aucustrate this colourful affair. This year we will be welcoming fabulous headliners ‘The Monkees’ all the way from California, along with ‘Spiritualised’ an English space rock band and ‘Idlewild’ a Scottish indie rock band just to name a few in the juicy mix. Showcasing unsigned acts right next to wellestablished international artists makes for a really exciting bill. Your tummies are in for a treat too… At Moseley Folk Festival you’ll find a well stocked real ale and cider bar complemented with fine locally sourced foods including organic roast pig, freshly made falafels, smoked fish, crêpes, award-winning Thali and Caribbean delicacies. Spoilt for choice 3 exciting ideas for your loft space... The Far-Away loft A place where even your five year old boys understand the meaning of serenity - it is possible. This is a no-toy zone, books only! Lots of skylights bring in a wonderful glow all day, the ceilings are fairly low so running rampage isn’t really an option. It’s that special place where you can get lost in a book and let your mind be totally free. And at night, a lava lamp projector can fill the room with supernatural mystique - another great storytelling setting. Balcony Envy Who doesn’t love a balcony? They drip with sophistication and provide a regal view of the neighbourhood. You may think that ship has sailed, you’ve bought the house you want to settle down in, and as balcony-less as it is you are intent on staying. Well I’m here to tell you there is still hope. There are so many options, from a simple little skylight that folds out, to a fully terraced roof area.

Loft Spa Everybody loves to get pampered, they may protest at first but once it’s complete I’ll bet the man of the house will suddenly go missing for hours at a time up on the indulgence floor. This room could be everything your ordinary bathroom never could, it’s not just the loo, it’s not just the wash room, it’s the loft spa. You might want to invest in an appointment book too! Edgbaston cricket’s historical state of play Andy Peebles looks at the iconic Edgbaston Stadium that sets records for others to aspire to….

fails to control his team he should be sent to his basket without a bone! So far the boys in Baggy Green have been pretty well behaved.

As England won a great series against New Zealand with runs coming by the hundred, Edgbaston played an important role.

On a local note, Jonathan Trott was in the Sky Sports commentary box recently and amused me when he referred to the Birmingham Bears as Warwickshire.

Great credit to groundsman Gary Barwell and his team for preparing a track which saw England post a record 408-9 and thrash Brendan McCullum’s side by 210 runs!

Those of us of a certain age are still getting used to the power of marketing and its role in sport but if it attracts more youngsters to the game then it has my total blessing.

Given what has happened at Cardiff and Lord’s one wonders what sort of wicket Gary has been asked to prepare for the arrival of Australia?

Enjoy your cricket!

When Steve Rouse was in charge who could forget Brian Lara scoring 501 not out against Durham. My one concern is the spirit of the game as exemplified by New Zealand. Michael Clarke’s nickname is Pup and if the Australian captain

Andy Peebles Andy Peebles covered cricket for the BBC for 27 years. He was at Radio One for 13 years and was the last English broadcaster to interview John Lennon, two days before his death.

Friends of Brandwood End Cemetery - Cause for Celebration It is now ten years since the inauguration of Friends of Brandwood End Cemetery who really have something to shout about. The cemetery was opened in 1899 and within the grounds were two beautiful twin chapels linked by a porch. The chapels were designed by J. Brewin Holmes, a local Moseley architect, in Gothic style and constructed from red brick and terracotta. In the late 1980s, the chapels were boarded up as they were no longer in use and Birmingham City Council did not have the budget for costly repairs. Vandalism ensued and one chapel was destroyed by fire in July 1995. Following a public meeting in 2005 a group of like-minded people, under the leadership of Mrs Anne Courbet, formed Friends of Brandwood End Cemetery with the main aim of restoring these beautiful chapels to their former glory. At this time of austerity and without a sustainable plan for future use, the initial hope is to prevent the chapels deteriorating further.

In the meantime the Friends have been very busy obtaining funding for the restoration of the Civilian Garden of Remembrance, installation of section markers to help people find graves and two large boulders marking Public Grave Areas. Bulbs and hedges have been planted, bats boxes and bird boxes installed, and ivy cleared. Quarterly litter picks are held, together with weeding and hedge cutting sessions. They have involved local schools in some projects helping them with their environmental studies. Last year they participated in National Heritage Open Day and each November a poppy cross is placed on the graves of all who gave their lives in the 1st and 2nd World Wars (300 plus) and there is a short Service of Remembrance on Armistice Sunday.

New Stitch, Knit and Natter group When a local stitch and knit club closed some members decided to start a new group where they could continue chatting with friends while knitting and sewing. The first problem was to find a venue where they could meet regularly and which was easily accessible by bus and had car parking space. They were very fortunate that Maypole Methodist Church agreed to allow them to use the church for a small fee and, most importantly, the use of the kitchen to make tea! The group is of mixed abilities and ages – the oldest member is 90 – and now meet every Thursday from 1:30 until 4:00. The group enjoys sharing ideas and supporting each other with a variety of crafts. Between

them they do patchwork, embroidery, cross stitch, crochet and knitting. New members are welcome, if you would like to join in, please contact 0121 443 5179. They would love to hear from you.

Dear Editor, Living right in the heart of Moseley as we do we’d just like to acknowledge how useful we have found the magazine in recent months.

youngest and read about the lineup for the Music Festivals in the Park at the bottom of the garden all from information in the latest issue.

Moseley is much more of a community and ‘village’ than one might initially assume and to have all the services that one might need here within the pages of a single, informed publication is very useful..

I keep the back issues too, for local information they are the best. So thank you and keep up the good work, we residents really appreciate ‘our’ magazine.

Does your Lawn need a visit to the Health Spa? The British weather can be very cruel to our gardens. We’ve had a cold April, a miserable May, barely any rain in June and record temperatures in July. Lawns are generally very resilient but they really don’t like extremes, be it high temperatures or lack of rainfall. All is not lost as autumn is the perfect time to renovate your lawn and set it up for next spring. Scarification, a mechanical raking process that removes dead and decaying grass in the lawn is just what’s needed. You’ll be amazed how much you can get out of a lawn! If you have a more powerful scarifier, this will cut deeper and create the perfect seed bed to over seed your lawn by spreading a modern

blend of seed. The seed will germinate over autumn and thicken next spring, giving your lawn a great start to the year. You can do the renovation yourself but if you don’t have the right machinery or can’t face raking and bagging up all the dead material then help is at hand. If you’d like some help with renovating your lawn then please call Phil Harrison, Lawnscience Solihull on

MHA Bloomer Heaven Announce Merger with MHA MacIntyre Hudson. City Centre based accountancy firm MHA Bloomer Heaven has merged with UK top 20 accountancy firm MHA MacIntyre Hudson in a move that will enhance the range of services it provides to its clients. The firm will now be known as MHA MacInytre Hudson. Since 2011, MHA Bloomer Heaven have been members of MHA, an association of independent accountancy firms located around the UK, and in 2014 Bloomer Heaven re branded to include MHA in its name. The merger will not impact on the current operations of MHA Bloomer Heaven, all four directors will remain in post and the Birmingham office will continue to be headed by Chris Barlow. MHA Bloomer Heaven has in recent years pursued its plan for significant growth both in its client base and the range of services it provides this merger will further support the ambitious growth plans for the firm in both the short and long term. MHA Bloomer Heaven will remain at their home in Edmund Street in the heart of the Colmore Business District and will continue to focus on building its reputation within the owner manager and SME’s sector particularly in manufacturing, property and not for profit, but the merger will now enable the business to have the scale and resource to significantly build on its client portfolio.

Chris Barlow, Managing Director MHA Bloomer Heaven is excited about what the merger will mean for existing and new clients; “This is a very exciting and important development in the history of our firm. In recent years we have continued to build both on the range of services to our clients and the way in which we deliver them. This merger with MHA MacIntyre Hudson now means we are able to offer an even greater breadth of services, expertise and knowledge which we believe will further support the wide range of businesses we work with.

Rakesh Shaunak, Chairman of MHA MacIntyre Hudson commented; “Birmingham and the wider West Midlands region is an exciting marketplace for us with the many significant developments taking place not least the growth potential across many sectors of business.”

5 reasons your will might be out of date or invalid Having a robust will is critical to ensuring our loved ones as little grief as possible when the inevitable happens. 1. If you enter into marriage or form a civil partnership.

Tyndallwoods footer for use

This automatically revokes any will that is in place unless it was made in contemplation of that marriage or civil partnership.

2. The birth of a baby, whether your own or a grandchild. New parents should update their will to appoint guardians and grandparents may want to ensure that their grandchildren are included as beneficiaries.

3. The sale or purchase of a house, in the UK or overseas. To ensure the person you intend inherits what is often your largest asset.

4. If you go through a divorce or bring a civil partnership to an end. This applies to you, your children or any beneficiary in the will.

5. Changes in tax legislation. Recent changes can mean that your will can be simplified. 29 Woodbourne Road Edgbaston Birmingham B17 8BY edgbaston@tyndallwoods.co.uk Car parking on site

Clare Martin

Indeed, according to Clare there is no need for wills to be written in difficult to understand legal jargon. They can be written in plain English and often only need to be one or two pages long. “A well written will should give you peace of mind, not confuse you,” she says.

This list is by no means exhaustive. If you would like to have your will reviewed or need any advice regarding the preparation of a will please contact Clare Martin at Tyndallwoods Solicitors on 0121 693 2222.

Local Author Prepares for Literary Success Moseley based author, Chris Harris is delighted by the success of his debut novel UK Dark. Am I a Prepper, released in May, has climbed rapidly up the sales charts and is currently within the top 1% of books sold worldwide on Amazon.

book one

UK DARK Am I a Prepper?

Chris, a Birmingham born and bred property developer, wrote the book in his spare time and has been overwhelmed at the reaction to his first book. “I have always wanted to write a prepper style novel as it’s something that I am fascinated by but most of the books I have read about a post-apocalyptic style world are set in America and focus on highly unbelievable scenarios and characters. I wanted to write something that I personally could relate to.” He adds: “UK Dark. Am I a Prepper is very much about how your “everyman” would deal with the possible end of the world. I wrote it for my own satisfaction really but the fact that other people are enjoying it is an added bonus.” Whilst the novel is fiction, events described are based on a real phenomenon known as EMPs [Electro Magnetic Pulses]. These pulses caused by the sun are a common event, which generally do not affect the status quo of the Earth but if the EMPs were ever to increase in power they would destroy anything electrical. The book, which reviewers have described as a “thought provoking, page turner” which “….will become the standing UK classic,”

52

chris harris

follows the life of Tom and his family as they prepare for impending disaster. Chris unashamedly has set the book in Moseley and local readers will enjoy the many references to familiar South Birmingham landmarks.

UK Dark, Am I A Prepper is currently available on Kindle and is free if you subscribe to Kindle unlimited or Amazon Prime.

Have a NICE Day Leading local charity NICE based in the heart of Birmingham, has launched their “Have a NICE day” campaign to raise vital funds to help keep providing children and adults with incurable movement disorders with NICE days. The Centre for Movement Disorders based in Moseley, serves the local community that you live and work in, transforming the lives of over 600 children and adults living with conditions such as cerebral palsy and Parkinson’s that affect them daily. NICE is the only centre in the West Midlands that specialises in helping children achieve milestones such as sitting, crawling and walking and enabling adults to relearn life skills they may have lost as a result of their condition, such as their speech or walking. Fundraising and Marketing Manager, Louise Watkins says, “NICE needs to raise £50,000 per month to provide its life changing services and the campaign is aiming to raise £100,000. Put quite simply, if we don’t raise £50,000 per month we will be unable to support people in real need and there is no equivalent service in this region. We are therefore appealing to local

companies, community groups, individuals and schools to have a NICE day and organise a simple fundraising activity such as a cake sale or dress down day so can we provide local disabled children and adults with a NICE day, every day.” Already signed up to the campaign is local school, Blue Coat in Edgbaston, who organised their very own NICE Day and in total raised £1,535.

To sign up please visit www.conductive-education.org.uk/ have-a-nice-day/ or email: lwatkins@conductiveeducation.org.uk
