BIRMINGHAM IS FULL OF TALENT; MUSIC, FILMMAKING, JOURNALISTIC...

MARVERINE COLE

T

his issue we are proud to bring you an exclusive interview with award-winning journalist and broadcaster, Brummie, media mentor and media educator Marverine Cole. Many of you will have seen her presenting the news on BBC Midlands Today, Sky News, ITV News or heard her on BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Radio WM… the list goes on. So many great accomplishments, what has been your biggest challenge so far? Probably one of my biggest challenges professionally was when I chose to leave a permanent staff job at BBC Midlands Today to take a leap of faith and join Sky News. Sky News had

6

asked me to join them three nights a week to present the World News and Business Report Show, a five hour live rolling news programme. What I’d done before were two minute news bulletins on BBC Midlands Today. What has been your most proud moment in your career? My proudest achievements of my career were at Sky News where I dealt with big stories like the nomination of president Obama and then his inauguration, the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy that led to the international financial crash in 2008, and the MP expenses scandal in 2009. One of my funniest or most memorable moments was probably interviewing Will Smith, I managed to persuade him to give me a kiss on the cheeks.

MY HARBORNE & EDGBASTON, OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2018

Tell us about some of the things you’ve been doing to help Brummies realise their TV and radio ambitions. Over the last ten years I’ve been mentoring young aspiring journalists that want to be TV or radio presenters. I also shortlist applications for the Journalism Diversity Fund bursary that’s run by the National Council for the Training of Journalists - the NCTJ. And I’ve just been appointed as course director of a brand new multimedia journalism degree course at Birmingham City University. Tell us about what motivates you. I’ve always been interested in helping people who aspire to become a journalist, broadcaster, TV or radio presenter. I also like to help people tell their story in a way that might help others or might change policy or really inform and educate and entertain people. Were there any Birmingham resources that helped you realise your aspirations? Yes. Resources is not quite the word but the fact that there was a booming TV and radio production sector when I was a teen here in Birmingham definitely fuelled my aspirations. I did work experience at Pebble Mill when I was 16 and got to see the studios and make tea for Ed Doolan. I also did work experience at Central TV and BRMB. How did you choose the topic Black Girls Don’t Cry for your recent BBC Radio 4 documentary? As a journalist I was looking for a story that hadn’t been told. I made sure it was the sort of documentary BBC radio 4 would air and found out whether or not they had looked at this topic before. Then I pitched it. Also I was personally affected - in 2000 I experienced a period of depression after a bad break up, being made redundant and struggling to keep my social housing flat.

What kind of reaction did you receive from Black Girls Don’t Cry?

Is there anything else you would like to say?

Huge. Overwhelming. I’ve never had a reaction like it. Messages from all over the country - practically all the national newspapers listed it as the radio documentary to listen to that coming week. I’ve also had good feedback from the commissioners. I feel really proud that I’ve created hopefully the a start of debate. Lots of women thanked me because it resonated with them.

I moved to Kings Heath almost three years ago. My husband and I saw how exciting and vibrant the area is - full of creative people, full of the whole mix of people; black, white, yellow, brown, different classes, different religions, everyone gets along. It’s lively, its fun. Kings Heath rocks.

Tell me about the course you’re running at BCU and Birmingham’s rising talent. Birmingham is full of talent; music, filmmaking, journalistic. I’m so excited about my course. It’s a BA honours in journalism and as course director I shape it and look for opportunities for students to get work placements and work experience. But I also teach on it and ensure all the teaching is up to date. All the lecturers on the course are practitioners which means we currently work in the field. Our students learn what news is, the ethics and law around journalism, news gathering and how to produce news from multiple platforms, how to write for the online space, TV and radio production, how to be a mobile studio filming and editing on their iPhones and iPads. So they learn a lot. It’s a great course.

Eagerly anticipated new venue, The Mill, has opened its doors This autumn a new destination for music and events has opened in Digbeth, Birmingham. The Mill, an eagerly-anticipated multi-purpose space, which will showcase an eclectic programme from multi-genre live music concerts, expansive club nights and private event spectacles, opened on Friday 28th September.

Smart Works Birmingham Smart Works Birmingham, a charity that supports women back into work in the region through dressing and interview coaching services, has had a very busy summer with new trustees joining the Board and a relocation to Birmingham city centre, making it easier for clients to access their services. The organisation, which is UK wide, initially set up their Birmingham Centre in Northfield in 2016. However, with a group of new Trustees headed by Philippa Pickavance of Philippa Pickavance Real Estate as Chairwomen, joining the board in June 2018, it was decided that a city centre location was a priority for the charity’s future success and expansion. The new centre is within the long established, Birmingham Voluntary Service Council building, (BVSC Building) a centre of voluntary action that is home to a number of other charities on Digbeth high street and just a few step from Selfridges and The Bull Ring. Philippa Pickavance commented; “I am very excited about joining Smart Works and working with the existing and new Trustees and huge team of volunteers whose support makes the work of our staff possible and our aims achievable.” For more info visit smartworks.org

Impressive win for MAC The recent Visit England survey results named Midlands Arts Centre (MAC) as the Most Visited Free Attraction in the West Midlands, and 12th nationally, with over 1.13m visitors in 2017. It’s the 5th time that MAC has won the title of Most Visited Free Attraction in the West Midlands since the 2012 survey, and it’s the 3rd consecutive year of holding the title - but it certainly doesn’t mean any less to the team, who are absolutely thrilled with the results. On hearing the news, MACs Chief Executive and Artistic Director, Deborah Kermode said: “It’s absolutely brilliant to see these results and the team at Midland Arts Centre is thrilled. We have such a range of things going on here at MAC, with a busy calendar of theatre, dance, art, music, film, comedy, participation and learning. It really matters to us that we are loved and used by our community...” visit macarts.co.uk to find out what’s on!

Located at 29 Lower Trinity Street, The Mill joins Birmingham’s leading and award-winning street food attraction Digbeth Dining Club, Ghetto Golf and the city’s oldest pub, The Crown, in the heart of the Digbeth community. Situated against the Victorian railway arches, in a unique warehouse space which has a mezzanine level and an open-top roof garden, The Mill, has undergone extensive renovations designed to deliver the best experience possible. Offering two rooms for live music revellers and club-goers to move between, The Mill is home to soaring exposed beams, brick walls and concrete floors against an industrial backdrop. Programmed with a must-hear rotating mix of touring acts, bands and DJs on a regular basis, The Mill’s launch event programme boasts acts such as Gentleman’s Dub Club, Napalm Death and Fun Lovin’ Criminals. Tickets for Mogwai on Friday 23rd November have already sold out. Visit themilldigbeth.com to discover more events at The Mill

‘Colours of Moor Pool’ Calendar 2019 Moor Pool conservation area in Harborne has just celebrated a highly successful Heritage Festival which saw the launch of a brand new 2019 calendar ‘Colours of Moor Pool’. This calendar features thirteen beautiful colour images celebrating the natural beauty of Moor Pool throughout the year. All images are original photographs by local resident, photographer Angela Yates. Earlier this year some of the series of images were exhibited at the Anchor art gallery at Peel & Stone on Harborne High Street. The calendar is a full colour product, printed on quality 250gsm silk paper, A4 wire bound, opening to 29cm x 42cm leaving plenty of space to write appointments. It is hole punched for wall hanging and packaged in a recyclable cello bag. It would make an ideal Christmas gift for any resident or friend of Harborne. The calendar costs just £10 to purchase and £1 of this goes straight to fund the important work of the Moor Pool Heritage Trust. Initial stock sold out in just hours at the Heritage Festival, but more stock is now available. Calendars can be purchased online at www.angelayatesphotography.com. Get in touch by email: calendar@ angelayatesphotography.com or via the Harborne Calendar page on Facebook. Local delivery is free within the Harborne and Edgbaston area.

Graffiti tours in Digbeth A new self-guided walking tour around the exciting, and often beautiful, graffiti art of Digbeth in Birmingham has been released onto the free Walk Run Cycle Birmingham app (available on itunes and google play) and website at walkruncycle. com/graffiti-art-of-digbeth-walk. Around 3 miles long, the walking tour will show you art from Birmingham based graffiti artists like Justin Sola, as well as international artists that created work for festivals in the city in years gone by. Ian Bush, the Brummie entrepreneur behind the Walk Run Cycle city apps, says it was one of the most fascinating tour routes he has worked on and was stunned by some of the artwork. But don’t delay, graffiti art has a bad habit of disappearing when new developments are built, so get out to view these now! Ian went on to say “it’s such a shame so much of the graffiti art gets destroyed, but fortunately new works come along to replace them so I’ll be keeping my eyes open to alter and update the tour where necessary!” To find out more download the Walk Run Cycle Birmingham App on the App Store for free.

NEC’s Festive Gift Fair, 15 - 18 Nov Now in its 23rd fabulous year, the Fair continues to be one of the most popular Christmas Shopping events in the UK. As well as finding great gifts for your loved ones, treats for yourself and all your sparkling Christmas essentials, you’re sure to have a fun packed day! The fair will be bursting at the seams with a colourful eclectic mix of unusual stocking fillers and presents, traditional gifts, festive food and great home decorations. With 325+ stalls all under one roof, the variety is huge, with clever gift ideas for all ages and tastes... and lots of special show offers! There’s even a Present Creche to drop off your full bags. The festive athmosphere is always fantastic and there’s even more this year with icicle lighting throughout the hall and a NEW Victorian bandstand where LIVE bands will take centre stage. While browsing the stalls let the music get you into that Christmassy mood and be entertained by Santa himself, stilt walkers and pantomime characters. Buy tickets at: festivegiftfair.co.uk

The first amber in

autumn

Get the look for the season!

When the leaves fall in autumn and dress the landscape in vibrant amber you’d do well to follow suit. Nature’s decay in preparation for winter is also one of its most stunning moments in the year, so it’s no sad thing to delve in and become a part of that beautiful scene. Play around with different shades like rust and auburn and try offsetting it against denim for a shabby chic autumn shine.

Double denim do’s & don’ts DO: DON’T:

Play around with shades of blue and other colours. Darker colours on the bottom and lighter shades on the top will flatter your figure. Wear a patchwork quilt of denim shades like the famously disastrous Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake couple outfit.

DO: Accessorise with a splash of glitsy glamour, as in sequins / jewels / brooches / heels.. DON’T: Wear denim accessories! DO: Wear a baggy shirt in a double denim outfit. DON’T: Wear baggy jeans in a double denim outfit.

Choose the bus for the city. Take the Platinum Lane.

24

MY HARBORNE & EDGBASTON, OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2018 networkwm.com/platinumlane

Residents in Harborne will soon be able to enjoy the luxury of a faster and more comfortable journey into Birmingham’s city centre this autumn, after a £6m investment into one of the busiest public transport routes in the city. Dubbed the ‘platinum experience’, the 23/24 National Express service will soon be arriving up to 8 minutes quicker during peak time than previous journeys thanks to a new bus lane. Not only will the service be quicker, but passengers will be able to relax on a new fleet of buses which will include comfier seating and extra legroom as well as offering free WIFI and USB charging points. The service will also be running more frequently, arriving every 6 minutes during peak times. Alongside major upgrades to the fleet of buses and to the city’s roads, Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) and National Express West Midlands are also putting their efforts into creating a more reliable and convenient service. With major roadworks taking place across the West Midlands, the two organisations have invested in running a real-time information pilot which will predict what time passengers will arrive at their destination. The technology will take information based on traffic and the other vehicles on the roads and, if successful, the pilot could be rolled out across the whole of the West Midlands.

Tom Stables, Managing Director of National Express West Midlands, said: “All the buses on the 23 and 24 routes are brandnew top-spec Platinums. So our Harborne customers can experience premium service travel - extra leg room, USB chargers and free WIFI. Announcements before every stop tell you when you’ve arrived at your destination. “You can pay using contactless bank cards. You don’t even have to worry about working out your fare - just tap and go, you’ll never pay more than a daysaver. “And if you download our app, you can find out from your phone when your bus is going to arrive. “With all the improvements being made, there’s never been a better time for Harborne residents to switch from car to bus!” The fleet upgrade and new bus lane in Harborne is all part of TfWM’s wider plan to get more people using upgraded public transport, helping to reduce congestion and improve Birmingham’s environment in time for the Commonwealth Games. LEGAL & FINANCIAL

Lasting Powers of Attorney What Safeguards Should You Consider? The benefits of putting a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in place are compelling. Without one, there will be no one vested with the formal legal authority to help you if you become unable to manage your own matters. The media have recently identified cases of financial abuse where some attorneys have misused their power, and it is true to say that the number of investigations into abuse of power by the Ministry of Justice has increased in the last two years. However, these can be avoided by having the right safeguards in place. Can My Attorney Abuse Their Power?

For example, many attorneys are unaware that they should keep annual accounts of the financial transactions they make. This seems sensible in theory. But in practice, most genuinely-motivated attorneys just get on with the job without stopping to consider

Is the Appointment of an Attorney Just a Minefield and Best Avoided? The simple answer is “no”...

28

whether they should be keeping receipts or accounts of each and every transaction they make. Another common stumbling block for attorneys is a genuine belief that that they are able to make gifts on behalf of the person they act for. In fact, this is rarely permitted under the standard terms of an LPA. Anything other than “customary”, for example Christmas or birthday gifts or, “occasional”, such as wedding gifts, are not permitted without specific approval from the Court of Protection. Is the Appointment of an Attorney Just a Minefield and Best Avoided? The simple answer is “no”, as long as your attorney is trustworthy and understands the breadth and scope of their powers. If they do, their appointment is likely to prove very beneficial. Clearly, the initial selection of a trustworthy attorney is key.

MY HARBORNE & EDGBASTON, OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2018

VWV.CO.UK

As advisors to both people putting LPAs in place and to attorneys, we see that many of the problems which are labelled “abuse” could be avoided if attorneys had a greater understanding of their powers and the correct way to use them. In the absence of this knowledge, it is remarkably easy for an attorney to make a genuine mistake.

LEGAL & FINANCIAL

How Can I Best Protect Myself Against Attorney Misunderstandings or Abuse? Although many people opt to fill in an LPA form online, this process does not provide the advice that a qualified legal advisor can give, including the parameters that you can set for your own attorney to be bound by. For example, you can specify limitations on your attorney’s powers up to a certain sum or limit, or impose bars on certain actions such as the sale of your property.

Award-winning law firm VWV can guide you to ensure that there is an LPA in place which works effectively and safely for you. Please contact Rachael Armstrong at rarmstrong@vwv.co.uk or on 0121 227 3726.

Of course, someone may ultimately need to make these decisions, but large and important transactions could be referred to a nominated third party for approval, which provides just one important safeguard.

3 FEET OF SPACE w

hether you have a lot of space to work with in your home, or only a little, space saving ideas can always come in useful to maximise on what you have and help to banish clutter. Here are three space saving ideas that will only occupy 3 feet of space!

Hats & Coats With the best of intentions, hats and coats end up hung on door knobs, banisters, benches and, well... floors. So while those old threadbare garments that never get worn obediently occupy a cupboard, those pesky ones that get worn regularly need an easy place to drop at the end of a long day, one that isn’t going to be such a mess. This is the idea behind artistic hooked wall hangings, there for the purpose of both storage and beauty.

Home cafe Creating little spaces in your home that deviate from the basic necessities gives your home something quirky and exciting. That cosy feeling you get when you slide into a soft chair at a secluded table in a cafe and have your morning coffee can be an experience you enjoy at home too, if you have three feet of spare space that is.

Shoes Have you ever bought a pair of shoes that were too glorious to be shut away in a dark cupboard? An elegant shelving unit near your front door could showcase the marvellous wonders you wear, so that you can enjoy them as a work of art on your wall before and after you strut them down the street.

Let us know about your space savvy home improvments on Facebook & Twitter!

continue my journey down Harborne’s High Street to uncover the philanthropic work carried out by our local community. Timpsons are partnered with the Royal British Legion in the ‘There But Not There’ campaign to personalise their ‘Tommy’ fusilier silhouettes by engraving their bases. All profits from the engraving service will go to the Timpson Foundation, providing training and job opportunities to disadvantaged groups, including ex servicemen and women. Can you see Tommy in the picture?

Since 2002, Timpsons have worked closely with the prison service. They are able to identify potential candidates within prisons who have the right kind of personality to make it on release working within the business.

Judy is pictured above with Corey of the Harborne Timpsons store with a Tommy fusilier silhouette.

It’s a closely managed process from selection, training and mentoring up to release, with the opportunity to secure employment with the Company from walking out the gates. Corey of the Harborne Timpsons store is proud to have trained several ex prisoners coming out of prison and to have given them a chance.

T

ired of looking out onto a desolate landscape throughout the winter months? Welcome to the evergreen garden! These hardy plants are capable of surviving the wide ranging weather this country faces, from blizzards blowing in from Russia, to Carribbean heat swept up across the Atlantic. Our evergreens are a testament to the natural beauty of this country and how that beauty can be found at any time of year. Evergreens are not fussy plants, other than a bit of sculpting here and there the only thing you need to worry about is picking something beautiful. Here are our top 4 essential evergreens to get your imagination into gear...

1. Umbrella Bamboo Considered one of the most beautiful bamboos in cultivation, Fargesia murielae is native to the mountains of central China. Its common name “umbrella bamboo” describes the graceful weeping habit of this plant.

garden

2. Daphne Odora Daphne odora is a species of flowering plant native to China, which later spread to Japan and Korea. It is known for its very fragrant, fleshy, pale-pink, tubular flowers, and for its glossy foliage. Though rare, it is known to fruit, producing red berries after flowering.

3. Itea Ilicifolia Itea ilicifolia, the holly-leaved sweet spire, is a species of flowering plant in the family Iteaceae, native to western China. It is an evergreen shrub growing to 10–16 ft tall by 10 ft broad, with fragrant drooping racemes of greenish-white flowers, 30cm long,

in summer and autumn. It is hardy, though young plants require protection from dry winds.

4. Ivy Hedera, commonly called ivy is a species of evergreen climbing or ground-creeping woody plants in the family Araliaceae, native to western, central and southern Europe, Macaronesia, northwestern Africa and across central-southern Asia east to Japan and Taiwan. Most species of Ivy are evergreen, and while some may consider it to be a weed it has become known as a classic componant to traditional English homes. Information source - wikipedia.org

FOOD & DRINK

SAUSAGE & CHESTNUT PASTA INGREDIENTS 1 tbsp olive oil 1 large onion finely chopped 450g sausages, meat squeezed out 200g chestnuts cooked and chopped 2 garlic cloves chopped 1 tsp rosemary 1 tsp fennel seed 1 glass full bodied red wine 500g carton passata 500g rigatoni or large pasta shells Small pack parsley, finely chopped Parmesan, to serve

Step 1

Heat the oil in a large frying pan, and fry the onion for 5 mins. Once starting to soften, add the sausage meat and chestnuts, and fry for another 10-12 mins, breaking the meat up with a wooden spatula or spoon as you fry it. Keep the heat quite high and stir often.

Step 2

When the meat and chestnuts are golden brown, add the garlic, rosemary and fennel seeds, and cook for 2 mins more. Splash in the wine, let most of it boil away, then tip in the passata. Cover and simmer the sauce for 10 mins while you boil the pasta in plenty of salted water, following pack instructions.

Step 3

Reserve a cup of the pasta cooking water, then drain the pasta well. Toss the pasta, 3 tbsp of the water, the ragu and most of the parsley together, then season to taste. Share between bowls, add a grinding of black pepper, the remaining parsley, then a handful of Parmesan shavings.

* Forageing Tip The fruits are carefully wrapped in a sharp spiky husk, and inside there are several nuts segmented together. The majority of the ones you find in the shops are imported due to the large size, but size is normally a compromise on flavour.
