Stephanie contacted Dream Doors because she didn’t want a completely new kitchen. Her existing units were solid and a kitchen makeover would save her thousands of pounds and take a fraction of the time to achieve. “I wanted to modernise my kitchen but I wasn’t sure how to achieve the look I was after. Dream Doors were so patient helping me with design choices - I found it difficult to make a decision on which doors to choose and they helped me no end. “I am overjoyed with the results. The new doors and worktop with integrated bin have a minimalist look that has completely transformed the kitchen. We love it. I liked the fact that I could have oversized doors because they make them bespoke to size. Before The super-mat graphite grey doors give the contemporary feel we were looking for which is further enhanced by integrated handles. “As well as saving money I didn’t want a new kitchen fit to cause weeks of upheaval. The fit took just two days and the kitchen looks just fabulous now. I would recommend Dream Doors for a kitchen makeover without ® hesitation.” ®

CHILDLINE ON THE LOOKOUT
FOR VOLUNTEERS The confidential helpline is there for young people to speak about a range of issues 24/7.
Meet mother of three Andrea Delaney-Hall, from Edgbaston who lives a 15-minute walk away from the base on Hagley Road: Why did you start volunteering for Childline? A good friend of mine had been volunteering for Childline for a while when I expressed an interest in doing some volunteer work locally. She felt that my previous teaching experience meant I had all the right skills to become a volunteer counsellor. Also, I grew up watching Esther Rantzen on TV and have been inspired by her and all the fantastic work she has done for Childline.
What does your role entail? I work as a volunteer counsellor taking calls and online chats from young people up to the age of 19. Essentially I am there to listen and support them the best way I can and there are always supervisors and other staff on hand to support me during the more difficult interactions. We work as a team to support young people nationally.
What kind of calls do you take? Calls and online chats can vary from shift to shift but recently we’ve had lots of calls about exam stress and results. Issues like bullying, self-harm and suicidal thoughts often feature in the calls we receive. Young people these days are under a huge amount of pressure.
Is it rewarding? Absolutely. When a young person, going through all the issues they are facing, takes the time to thank me at the end of our chat, then I feel like I’ve done something incredibly worthwhile and rewarding that day.
If you are interested in volunteering, you can call 0121 227 7577 or e-mail the volunteer recruitment team at volunteerrecruitment@nspcc.org.uk. Full training and support is provided to volunteers.

AWARD WINNING DESIGNER OF ECO FRIENDLY JEWELLERY MOVES TO TOWN Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter welcomes an award-winning designer of eco-friendly jewellery into residence. Elizabeth Anne Norris of EAN Jewellery, has moved into the Jewellery Quarter joining other residents in the newly converted 19th-century building, home to world-class jewellery-makers since the early 1900s. The Jewellery Quarter is Europe’s largest hub of businesses involved in the jewellery trade, producing 40% of all the jewellery made in the UK.
PIONEERING STYLES: URBAN DANCE MEETS INDIAN CLASSICAL DANCE
DOOR LEFT OPEN FOR (FELLOW BRUMMIE) MOEEN ALI TO RETURN TO ENGLAND TEST TEAM
Subhash Viman Gorania is a British choreographer and dancer, who is setting up Morph Dance Company to reflect his interest to create work that crosses between urban and Indian classical dance. ‘Gamechanger’ is his first solo tour embracing three works, ‘Metamorphic’, ‘Fly From’ with Saju Hari and ‘Three’ with TJ Lowe, mentored by Jean Abreu. His distinct style gives him the ability to move in a smooth and liquid way, giving his dance an unorthodox and quirky edge.
Ashley Giles has left the door open for Moeen Ali to return to the England Test team despite the all-rounder asking for a break from red-ball cricket.
The premier of his show ‘Classic Encounters’ will be taking place in Birmingham on 15th October at Midland Arts Centre. This is the first full length dance work curated and performed by Subhash Viman Gorania of Morph Dance Company. It is a piece that reveals Suhash’s dramatic journey into dance and his fascination with lighting to amplify mythical and urban environments on stage. Through his creative skills as an artist and storyteller, he brings Indian Gods to life, portrays characters from everyday life and reveals how he danced his way out of trouble, growing up in Leicester. More info at www.dancexchange.org
The 32-year-old was dropped after the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston following a poor display and has only been handed a central contract in white-ball cricket. Giles, managing director of the England men’s team, believes some time away could be exactly what Moeen needs to rediscover his best form in the longer format of the game. “Moeen has actually asked me if he could just take a step back from red-ball cricket, which is fine. He’s not retiring, but he just wants a little bit of a break from Test cricket,” Giles said. “I think for all the guys, not just Moeen, it’s been a really challenging summer. A World Cup, and Ashes back-to-back has had a massive effect on many of these guys psychologically as much as physically.” Giles added. full story at www.dunfermlinexpress.com
With a highly-regarded reputation, the Jewellery Quarter is a big tourist attraction and people can visit Elizabeth to buy her collections, as well as to attend contemporary jewellery-making workshops, or to make their own eco wedding rings from recycled gold. Of the move, Elizabeth said “Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter was a big draw for me. The thought of making jewellery where it has been made for over 450 years is very exciting. I will offer something a bit different to what’s currently available in Birmingham. BRUMMIE BAND, BOAT TO ROW COME BACK FROM THE BRINK
PROPERTY GROUP OPENS THE DOOR TO 3 NEW STUDENT DEVELOPMENTS
Birmingham based band, Boat To Row have had a rough year. After fans generously donated all the money needed to launch their new album the fundraising platform Pledge Music collapsed and took all the pledged music with it. This left many industrious artists adrift. After the Static Brothers realized that local laurel canyon folkies Boat to Row were caught in this they stepped in to secure the release of their new (second) album.
Cheshire property group Vita has opened the doors to three new Vita Student residences in Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester, boosting its portfolio by 25% for the 2019/20 academic term. Its Pebble Mill residence in Birmingham is built on the former BBC site in Edgbaston and comprises 360-studio apartments as well as 7,000 sq ft of social spaces, including lounges, private dining rooms, a movie room, gym and study areas. Built by Morgan Sindall, it is the first Vita Group product to be launched in the city. Vita Group chief executive Mark Stott said: “There are huge growth plans for Vita Student and I’m delighted to see another three residences open. “The team has done an exceptional job of making sure all residences were delivered on time and to meet our high expectations of quality and finish, and we’re looking
forward to continuing this momentum over the coming months as we enter new cities across the UK and overseas.” Vita Group recently announced a £600m investment from DWS, with the deal allowing Vita Group to scale its growth both domestically and internationally, with a significant future pipeline which includes the first international scheme in Barcelona. Two years in preparation and working closely with long term collaborator Francis Gorini to mix and master the songs and realize the album artwork, ‘Rivers That Flow In Circles’ is an album that sees that band expanding their musical horizons, from the golden laurel canyon sounds of the latest single ‘On Your Own’, through the ever changing soundscapes of the four movements of ‘Fledgling’, the band have taken every opportunity to develop and redefine their songwriting. Written and recorded through a tumultuous period of lineup changes, corrupted recording hard drives and studio closures, ‘Rivers That Flow In Circles’ captures the band at their resilient best, refusing to know when to quit. Drawing on the talents of band members past and present as well as colleagues from their native Birmingham scene, Boat to Row have created an album which captures their musical explorations perfectly. HAVE YOU HAD A CONCUSSION?
TAKE PART IN OUR VIRTUAL REALITY ROUTE LEARNING STUDY ☆ £25 & PICTURE OF YOUR BRAIN ☆
We are conducting a study at the University of Birmingham looking at route learning in people who have experienced concussion. Volunteers will use a joystick to navigate and learn virtual routes displayed on a computer screen. They will then complete those routes in an MRI scanner. So the study involves two sessions (1.5 hours each) and volunteers receive £25 upon completion of the study.
To be eligible you must meet the following criteria: • Either someone at a hospital or doctor’s surgery confirmed you had a concussion, or you lost consciousness (for up to 30 minutes) • It happened when you were 16 years or older • It didn’t involve the skull being fractured or penetrated • It has been at least 6 months since the concussion happened • The cause of the concussion wasn’t alcohol, drug, or medication related Because of the methods we use please don’t volunteer if you have: • A physical difficulty that would make it difficult to use a joystick • Motion sickness when using virtual reality or computer games • Non-removable metals in your body or any tattoos near your head • An existing condition that affects your brain or nervous system • Also we cannot MRI scan someone who is pregnant or suspects they might be. If you meet the criteria and would like to participate, please get in touch with Emily Standell at ECS920@student.bham.ac.uk. If you have any further questions about the study, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Thank you!
We are also looking for control volunteers who match your age and sex. So if you have a friend who has not had a concussion and wouldn’t be excluded because of the methods we use, please let us know when you get in touch!

LITTLE BLACK DRESS The LBD marked a significant moment of liberation: women were free from the traditional restrictive clothing of the century before, and during a time simple and affordable was key, the simple black dress soon became the outfit of choice allowing women to look elegant without breaking the bank.

MY HARBORNE & EDGBASTON, OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2019
FASHION
The magic of the LBD This issue Dawn Marriott shares her expert advice on why the little black dress holds so much power, and should be your festive go-to! And since then the LBD has gone from strength to strength and today no wardrobe is complete without a Little black dress (or two) and the reason this dress had worked so well for decades is that nothing oozes style more than a well fitted black dress. The classic LBD will never be out of fashion, weather it be low neck, long sleeve or backless its style remains classic and timeless.
With Christmas fast approaching and the talk of party season already underway, you may find yourself wondering what to wear for those festive gatherings, my advice would be ……The LBD. The little black dress has become somewhat of a wardrobe staple. It started its journey in 1926 when the world famous Gabrielle Coco Chanel created her first LBD for a VOGUE feature named “the frock the world will wear” although women had been wearing black dresses for centuries, Coco Chanel’s design gave a new sense of fashion to the black silhouette. By the 1930s the LDB had been accepted into mainstream and the Flapper dress was born.
But fashion has moved on and there are no hard fast rules about what the LBD should look like today– new styles on the block mean that there is a style and shape to suit everyone. If you fancy a take on the Coco Chanel classic this season I have listed 5 of my favourites from the high street: 1. If you want something a little more feminine try a long floaty version of the LBD; & Other Stories beaded ruffle dress at £129. 2. A shorter smock shape is perfect if you don’t want a fitted style; try Mint Velvet for their V- neck smock dress at £89. 3. The shift dress is versatile, and can be left loose or belted. Try Reiss for their Myra Wrap shift dress at £185
4. One of my favourite styles that suits most shapes is the wrap midi dress; visit Zara for their Satin effect kimono £45.00 5. For a timeless classic LBD silhouettes try LK Bennett Liya Dress at £125. If fashion is more your thing try incorporating the season trends when buying your LBD. The catwalks were full of fabulous fabrics for AW19 such as organza, satin and leather, making the perfect dress for a fashionista! Whichever LBD you decide on ensure it fits well in the right places and is of good quality, it will then stand the test of time as one of your wardrobe staples – after all, the LBD isn’t just for Christmas!

Cereal killers Not quite as murderous as the name, cereal killers is still a wickid good time! Take an empty box of cereal and put in on the floor in the middle of your party guests, they must take it in turns to try to pick up the box with their mouth with only their feet touching the floor. Each succesful pick up results in them having to rip the top of the box off, and you keep going as it gets smaller and smaller, and you eventually find your (winner) cereal killer!
One solid hour of Halloween bangers!
Skeleton A few well placed skeletons could turn any get together into a full blown Halloween spook-fest so think carefully about some impactful locations! The more obviously placed some are, the more shocking your guests will find the one stareing in through the kitchen window or lurching out of the cupboard when they go to hang their coat up!
Wrap the mummy This is a silly one, but aren’t the best things in life? You’ll need two or more teams, each team picks their mummy and the rest of the team enter into a timetrial to wrap (with toilet paper) their mummy first! Pick a juicy prize to ensure a healthy amount of competative vigor!

Focus on Fingers Dupuytren’s Disease Put your hands in our hands Do you have bent fingers? Are you constantly poking your eye with your finger or struggling to get your fingers into gloves or pockets? If you answered yes, then you may have Dupuytren’s disease. Dupuytren’s disease is a benign disease of the hand and digit causing your finger to bend down towards the palm. It mainly affects the ring and little fingers and you can have it in one or both hands. Symptoms usually appear over a period of time and eventually your finger may get stuck in the bent position. The origins of the disease date back to the Vikings (the disease is also commonly known as Vikings disease) and it was first identified by a Military surgeon and French anatomist, Barron Guillaume Dupuytren. It has a strong genetic predisposition to those of Scandinavian or Northern European descent. There are minimally invasive treatments for Dupuytren’s which have a proven record of rapid rehabilitation and return to work, with high patient satisfaction. The Midland Hand Clinic, lead by Mr G Shyamalan, Consultant Hand Surgeon, has been gaining popularity as a locally based, easily accessible service. We pride ourselves on our friendly and professional service and we work closely with all our patients before, during and after treatment to provide expert advice on protecting and caring for all aspects of hands.

LOOKING AFTER
MIND BODY & SOUL
As the days grow colder and shorter the decrease in vitamin D can have damaging effects on our mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing. Here are some simple practices that can keep you sustained through the winter.
MIND Declutter. Write a list of everything you need to do in the forseeable future, take all of the noise out of your mind and put in onto that list. Turn your focus to the present moment.
BODY Pamper youself... • exfoliate dead skin • trim your nails • massage your muscles • bathe in scented oils • put petals in your bath Get some endorphins! • go for a morning jog • do some morning star jumps • find a home workout on Pinterest • go swimming
SOUL Be kind to yourself. Tell yourself encouraging things, in your head and out loud! Give yourself a hug! Listen to music that energises your soul. Make time every day to do some reading. Follow these simple practices and the winter won’t be quite so rough on your mind, body and soul!

It demonstrates how we can become the air traffic conroller, giving clear and explicit instuctions of the pilot sitting in the cockpit of our minds; detailing how stepping back more can be achieved by doing less and how confidence through knowledge can increase self belief, self esteem and decision making. His career path resemles a patchwork quilt, varied and interesting; travelling extensively; meeting facinating and prosaic people along the way. Previously a guitar player and songwriter in his spare time, he took up motorcycling in 2001 the freedom of which keeps him sane in an increasingly insane world. He turned to writing in 2015 and is busy writing a second book in his Ultimate series, with a third bubbling enthusiastically on the back burner!

LEGAL & FINANCIAL
Are We Getting Closer to a No Fault Divorce?
For those of you that have been following the proposed developments in the law, you will be as pleased as us to hear that we are moving ever closer to the concept of a no fault divorce. That said, Parliament decided in 1996 that a no fault divorce was appropriate, yet we are still waiting. The Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Bill 2019 is excellent news for all those that have been campaigning for a change of the current divorce laws. What Does the Current Process Look Like?
This must be proved by the petitioner by establishing one of the below five facts: • Adultery • Desertion • Unreasonable behaviour • 2 years separation with consent • 5 years separation without consent
The current divorce process, as it stands, begins by one party petitioning for divorce by filing an application with the court. They in turn will be the ‘petitioner’. The divorce petition is served on the other party (the ‘respondent’) and they are required to file an acknowledgment of service.
Whilst clearly some of the facts are more likely to cause conflict than others, the opinion is why should parties have to justify their divorce? If their relationship has broken down and there are no prospects of reconciliation, surely that should be enough.
A divorce petition will be filed on the ground that the relationship has broken down irretrievably.
Having effectively dealt with the divorce petition, in simple terms, the parties will then proceed to Decree Nisi (the first stage of divorce) and
40
Decree Absolute (the final stage of divorce). What Changes Will the Reforms Bring? The government’s objectives are to ensure that the decision to divorce is a considered one, and in short allow for the opportunity to reconcile and to reduce family conflict in circumstances where it is often inevitable. Following the new reform the government plans to: • Remove the five facts (mentioned above) and allow couples to divorce solely on the basis that their marriage has broken down irretrievably • Allow couples to give notice and apply jointly, thus reducing the feeling of confrontation when one party must petition against the other
MY HARBORNE & EDGBASTON, OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2019
LEGAL & FINANCIAL
WWW.VWV.CO.UK • Remove the ability of one person to contest a divorce. Whilst the number of contested divorces is low, this option does not serve the interests of either party. • Introduce a minimum timeframe of six months from petition to Decree Absolute to allow for sufficient opportunity for reconciliation. • Modernise the language used so that it is easier to understand. The ‘petitioner’ will be the ‘applicant’, Decree Nisi will be referred to as ‘conditional order’ and Decree Absolute will be referred to as a ‘final order.’ When Will the Changes Happen? It all depends on Parliament having the capacity to review the proposals. However what we can say is that the Bill received its second reading on
25 June 2019 and the Public Bill Committee met on 2 July 2019. No amendments were made to the Bill and this has now been referred back to the House of Commons where the Bill will have its report stage (where the whole House will review the Bill) and its third reading (which is ordinarily the final opportunity to decide whether to pass or reject the Bill), on a date to be announced. We will update you as and when we have further information.

Reflections on inheritance and legacy matters
Judy Dyke is one of Birmingham’s longest serving and most highly regarded wills and probate solicitors. So much so, she was presented with an MBE in March this year by HRH Prince Charles. Judy, chairman and head of the private client team at Tyndallwoods Solicitors in Edgbaston, reflects on two key issues currently affecting people in relation to inheritance and legacy. Firstly the rising trend of cohabiting couples who may believe they are legally protected as ‘common law’ spouses. And secondly the recent changes to organ donor permissions. Cohabiting couples without wills “Cohabiting couples have even more need to write a will than married couples”, says Judy.
w www.tyndallwoods.co.uk
Where there is no will married couples have the protection of the law, whereas the intestacy rules do not make provision for cohabiting couples. Partners who are cohabiting have no automatic right to any kind of inheritance, their remedy is by way of application to the court under the terms of the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975. If either of the couple are still married to a previous partner this issue becomes even more of a minefield. Cohabiting couples may believe they have the same inheritance tax exemptions as married couples which is simply not the case. If you inherit money or property from an unmarried partner you will not be exempt from paying inheritance tax as you would be if you were married. And a cohabitee does not inherit their partner’s inheritance tax allowances like married couples do. If either of the couple is still married and have a death in service payment within their contract of employment they may need a solicitor to advise on how
this can be paid directly to the children in order to circumvent the estate and therefore be free of inheritance tax. Organ donor registration Often when preparing a will clients ask to include a note to say they would like to donate their organs. The sad fact is that there is no advantage to including this in a will because by the time the will is read it is too late to harvest organs. Indeed, recent law changes mean that from spring next year all adults in England will be considered potential donors unless they opt out. This change is aimed at saving hundreds of lives when it comes into force. But if for religious or personal reasons you do not wish to donate your organs you will need to record your decision on the NHS Organ Donation Register. If you need any advice regarding inheritance or legacy matters please contact Judy at Tyndallwoods: jdyke@tyndallwoods.co.uk Direct Line 0121 243 3025.

WHO NEEDS THE
OSCARS?
The team at Kings Heath based Birmingham Freedom Project have received not one but two prestigious awards this summer.
Birmingham Freedom Project works with women who have suffered from domestic abuse, offering them a lifeline of support and healing. Jacky Mulveen heads up the team, she said: “On July 11th we attended the West Midlands Police & Crime Commissioner awards ceremony at Birmingham City Football Ground. There were four main awards up for grabs: Outstanding Citizen, Outstanding Young Citizen, Outstanding Community Project and Outstanding Young Community Project. Nominations are taken from the community and provide an opportunity to celebrate the untold stories of those who volunteer, campaign or take part in acts of extraordinary bravery. “We were runners up in the Outstanding Community Project Award. We were delighted to have been nominated and recognised for the services we provide in empowering women and consequently their children, to heal from the impact of domestic abuse. It is vital that we as a City understand the impact of trauma on the lives of families and have the right services in place for them to heal and thrive.
If you would like to know more about the programmes offered by Birmingham Freedom Project please get in touch with Jacky, Donna & Jo.
@dvsouthbham birminghamfreedomproject.org 07868 163 103
“On August 7th we received the Chief Constable’s Community Service Award from Dave Thompson. Nominated by PSCO Mohini Parmar from Brandwood Team it was a recognition of our longstanding work in delivering Awareness, Empowerment and Parenting programmes for women who have experienced domestic abuse. Our programmes are in constant demand with over 70 women accessing our programmes on a weekly basis.” Dave Thompson said. “You put your heart and soul into this project and have countless numbers of success stories where you have changed people’s lives for the better.” Jacky added: “On both occasions it was lovely to be amongst so many wonderful individuals and organisations doing so much amazing work and hearing their stories of bravery, courage, strength and compassion.”

A COLOURFUL NEW KITCHEN PROVIDES PERFECT FAMILY SPACE IN HARBORNE When Lulu was looking to invest an unexpected windfall on a new kitchen for her family home in Harborne, she wanted to spend it wisely and was looking for a local company that was recommended by others.
“After meeting Claire and visiting the showroom, I felt confident that the project was in good hands,” says Lulu.
“I was looking for a company that could manage the complete project and they did this brilliantly. From the amazing CAD drawings that brought the design to life, to the meticulous attention to detail during the installation, everything was handled in an efficient and professional manner.”
Lulu’s previous kitchen was a basic MDF kitchen that had seen better days, she was looking to update the look and add in some colour. The gorgeous Priory Blue shaker doors match the style of her period home beautifully and when combined with the Prosecco White units at high level, she has plenty of storage and a lovely contrast.
Fitting kitchens into period homes is not always straightforward, as was the case with Lulu’s home, but our installation team have plenty of experience and took the time and trouble to get it just right.

West Midlands Mayor Andy Street says five ways tram connection is on track!
West Midlands Mayor Andy Street has hailed the extension of the tram network to Five Ways as a ‘major step forward’ for local transport. Work on the 1,350-metre route is set to begin in earnest following completion of the first phase of the West Side extension, where trams will take passengers from Stephenson Street to Paradise Street in front of Birmingham Town Hall. That first phase took a major step forward recently with a successful test of one of the trams. In a UK first, the vehicle travelled up the Pinfold Street incline using battery power only, meaning that overhead cables would not need to be installed near some of the city centre’s most cherished historic buildings.
Mr Street, who heads up the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), said: “Although there have been many milestones in this ambitious project to extend the tram network to the westside of Birmingham, this successful tram test marks a significant moment in the first phase of the project.
The work on the second phase, part of a wider expansion of the Metro network owned by the WMCA, is expected to be completed by 2021.
“It is fantastic to see that final preparations are now underway to start services from Grand Central to Centenary Square, with all the benefits that will bring to Birmingham city centre and the wider West Midlands economy.”
The Birmingham Westside Metro route follows on from the extension between St Chads and Grand Central, which opened to passengers in May 2016. Once completed, the Metro will operate between Grand Central and Hagley Road in Edgbaston, improving transport links into the heart of the city, making journeys faster and more accessible and, in turn, helping businesses and supporting more jobs.
“These expansions combined with major investment in state-of-the-art clean buses and an improved train timetable is clear evidence of how our region is undergoing a major transport overhaul. “Of course, we recognise the disruption major projects inevitably bring, but this will be only temporary – while in the long-term expanding the tram network to Edgbaston will benefit local people for years to come. “From Centenary Square, the line will extend down Broad Street to stops at Five Ways and Hagley Road, connecting residents in Harborne and Edgbaston to the benefits of the new transport system. It’s a major step forward that will help businesses and bring jobs.”
The Five Ways island underpass was closed on June 3 this year in preparation for the tramworks.
Five new tram stops will connect passengers to Victoria Square, Centenary Square, Brindleyplace, Five Ways and Hagley Road, with links to popular attractions including the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, the International Convention Centre and Symphony Hall. The extension will allow more people to use the Metro in this area for day-to-day travel, reducing road congestion in the city centre, as well as improving sustainable transport options along Broad Street and beyond. Keep up to date with Andy Street at www.fb.com/andy4wm

Christmas Cheats! GAMES
MUSIC
DECORATIONS
Santa limbo This Christmas edition of limbo involves a rather rotund impediment, a nice round santa’s belly made by shoving a pillow up your jumper or many, many delicious things down your throat! This hilarious twist on the classic game will have you falling all over the place trying tirelessly to stay agile with a bodacious santa bod.
The classics When it comes to Christmas it seems like everyone is after that nostalgic recreation of the classic cosy wintery vVctorian scene. You know, just after Scrooge sees the error of his ways and goes frolicing down the road to buy the prize turkey for his poor employee (spoiler alert!). That’s when only the carols will do, if it came out after 1960, respectfully, get it out of here!
Christmas bow This game involves stealth and slieght of hand, with just the right amount of deviousness! Everyone competes for a prize of your choosing, to stick as many bows on other guests as they can without them noticing! If they catch you, it doesn’t count! Each person has a different colour of bows so you can count them up at the end and crown the winner.
The new classic If you do feel it’s time for something new, we have improved upon tradition (in so many ways, I can’t even begin to get into it!). Think Michael Buble, Seth Mcfarlane and Zooey Dechanel and it’s a wrap. But of course throw in some Mariah Carey too, for good measure!
The first snow We have been promised a snowy one this year, and after the previous few blizzard Christmasses it seems like a safe bet, but who can wait? If you can’t, then it’s time to play weatherman and make the first snow appear in your special little corner of the world. Using transparent string, cotton wool and a little PVA glue you can create a beautiful steady snowfall that lasts the enitre festive period. Hang your snowfall in the windows for a magical snowy scene!

SPACE SAVING TREE Perhaps your celebrations with friends will be falling a little too early for the tree to be up, or maybe you just really need the extra space to make a party viable, ether way, there’s a glamerous solution! Pop some tacks in the wall in the shape of a Christmas tree and hook on some Christmas tree branches and fairy lights criss crossing their way up to the star at the top. Baubles hardly weigh a thing, so you can certainly get away with bulking up your 2d tree with quite a few glittery adornments.

HOME & GARDEN
GARDENING TIPS FROM THE EXPERTS at Birmingham Botanical Gardens ready-mixed sand. Finish off by giving the grass an autumn fertiliser. It’ll look a bit sad for a couple of days, but your lawn will thank you. There are lots of other things you can get on and do, whether that’s preparing your garden for next year or ensuring the borders continue to thrive for a few weeks longer. Here are some of the tasks to do in October:
Tree leaves look fabulous when they turn from green to gold, but not so much when they fall and cover your lawn. Raking the leaves is one of the main jobs for many gardeners this month, but it’s a great work out – no need to go to the gym! – just make sure you bag them up as they will turn into fantastic leaf mould. Once the leaves are all raked up, give your lawn some much-needed TLC. Use a fine tine rake to lift moss, grass clippings and other debris. The lawn is likely to be compacted, so get a garden fork and push it deeply into the grass and give it a good wiggle – do this every 10-15cm or so – and then brush in some

Collect seeds to ensure a crop of flowers next year – pick the ripe ones from your plants, make sure they are dry and store them in an envelope that is clearly marked up and dated. Put all your envelopes into an airtight tin and store in a cool shed or garage.
*
Tidy up the borders and add a good quantity of mulch, whether that’s spent mushroom compost, leaf mould (from the leaves you collected last year!), manure or bark chips.
* *
Prune rambling and climbing roses. Take hardwood cuttings from deciduous shrubs.

Lift and divide perennials to get a bigger display next year. Clean and disinfect your greenhouse. Take your tender plants into the greenhouse and keep them well ventilated to reduce the risk of disease. Change your hanging baskets and pots so you have a beautiful colourful display over winter – ivy, primula, winter pansies, cyclamen and heathers all look stunning! PTO >>

Prepare for spring and summer displays: there’s still time to sow bulbs such as daffodils, tulips and alliums and you can also sow plenty of seeds, including sweetpeas, hollyhocks and aquilegia, in the greenhouse.
Enjoy autumn in the garden – it’s never a bad time to be out in the fresh air.
