Hello Neighbours, We’ve got a packed edition to launch into Spring. The Lord-Lieutenant’s story is fascinating. I’d urge you to read the expanded version of the cover story on our website. Do you know a special person or company whose contribution to society has been extraordinary? If so, read the article on The Queen’s Awards and Queen’s Honours. We have our own interesting special people featured in this issue one of them being the intriguing Terry Fogarty, the inventor of a brilliant system of getting water uphill. Although we distribute to 22,000 homes, some areas will naturally be missed. Copies of MY Solihull are always left at The Manor House in the High Street. Next issue is distributed at the end of March. Till then….warmest regards to you.

A Life of Many Firsts for Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of The West Midlands
The Duke of Ca ridge with Paul Sabapathy Lord Ltmb of West Midlands as he visits St Basils in Birmingham, an organisation ich helps young people aged 16-25wh who are ho or at risk of homelesmeless sness.
Our cover is of a great man and one we are proud to be able to feature. Mr Paul C.Sabapathy CBE has, since 2007, been the representative of Elizabeth II, our Queen and carries the responsibility of the highest office in the county charged with upholding the dignity of the Crown. He is the first ever non white person to be given this honour in the UK. In fact, Mr Sabapathy’s journey is a remarkable one with many ‘firsts’ for a man whose origins are not from this country. From his beginnings in Chennai, India in 1942 to Newcastle in 1964 to study, paid for by the sacrifice and hard work of his extraordinary mother, his is a life of academic and career achievement. He became a British Citizen in 1984. On meeting The Lord-Lieutenant, I was immediately struck by his imposing persona and air of dignity. This is a man who carries his responsibility elegantly. As a 7yr old little boy, he went to a military boarding academy in Madras and experienced a harsh, very disciplined regime but it gave him self-discipline and confidence. The motto of the school was “Never Give In” and he never did. Having lost his father at 9 years old his mother, a maths teacher, raised him alone, teaching in
different countries, sometimes in the harshest conditions to pay for her son’s education. It is one of the Lord-Lieutenant’s roles to put forward candidates for The Queen’s Honours and The Queen’s Awards for Voluntary Service and Enterprise. It mystifies Mr Sabapathy how few are forthcoming from this county, blessed as we are with some of the finest endeavours. Mr Sabapathy’s words for young people are, “with hard work, drive and a good education there is plenty of opportunity here in the UK.” It concerns him that many young men are not achieving their potential. Humans of Solihull Our “Mr Tom” - A marvellous (and not just any) school crossing patrol man. Thomas Fernie might give the impression that his life is uncomplicated but I call him “Iceberg Man.” Not because he has a cold personality - the total opposite - because you only see the tip of his life story when you watch him teaching children how to cross the road. Tom’s present life has been for more than eight years, entwined with Monkspath Junior & Infant School where he’s known affectionately as ‘Mr Tom.’ His twice daily walk to work takes exactly 7 minutes and he’s a stickler for punctuality. Does that give a clue to what he once did? Tom was in the Royal Navy for 10 years as a leading Radio Operator (Electronic Warfare) on destroyers and aircraft carriers. He went around the world twice including postings to the Far East and Australia. His father and brother both served in the army and with his father-in-law serving in the RAF, the men in the family covered all divisions of the armed forces. He was only sea sick once. He tells the story… “we were on our way to the Mediterranean and called into Gibraltar. That night we
partied on the island. Seriously worse for wear early next morning we sailed to Malta and of course, hit a storm. I was sick as a dog. Awful. But I learned my lesson. Never go ashore and party the day before a sailing.” Tom celebrated his 50th Golden Wedding last year with the lady he met whilst on naval leave. The story of how they met and more of Tom’s wonderful career has to be continued online as we run out of space here. International Day of Commemoration in Memory of Holocaust Victims Tuesday, 27 January 2015, 11:00am, at Solihull Library Studio On January 27 each year, the United Nations (UN) remembers the Holocaust that affected many people of Jewish origin during World War II. This day is in memory of the many victims of the Holocaust and also commemorates when the Soviet troops liberated the Nazi concentration and death camp AuschwitzBirkenau in Poland on January 27, 1945. Through remembering these events, people will not forget the horror of the Holocaust and it is hoped future genocide will be prevented. Solihull Council’s Holocaust Memorial Day Commemoration takes place at 11am in the Solihull Library Studio.

Diagonal Canal Locks The environmental solution to the increase of freight transportation on our roads? “Yes!” says Terry Fogarty, their inventor, and here’s why… Many people have on their bucket list of things to do before they die - a journey on a barge or river boat. But the thought of negotiating the locks can be off putting. Locks are necessary where a waterway has to go up or down a hill and most were constructed in the 18th and 19th centuries. Lock Keeper’s cottages still stand today at many points of the canal system. Travel on our waterways is slow and often laborious. To many, this is their ideal, but one man has come up with an extremely innovative alternative…meet Terry Fogarty and the Diagonal Lock system he has invented.
standards. It will minimise the time and simplify travel on the canals. A journey that would once have taken a day and a half would be reduced to just a few hours.
Terry Fogarty now lives on a canal boat moored in Knowle and grew up walking to school through Camp Hill, dense with waterways. From being an apprentice in a lead casting firm making the plaques and metal plates you see as house numbers or information signs, to eventually owning his own successful casting company based in Olton, Terry is a creative innovator.
It is nearly impossible for a new invention no matter how brilliant, to get attention from central government which it needs to raise media profile and attract necessary investment. Any ideas?
Terry’s Diagonal lock is remarkable in beauty of design and efficient ecological ability. Building it is quick and cheap by today’s
A barge boat can carry approximately eight truckloads of freight. With Terry Fogarty’s Diagonal locks, transportation of freight on the waterways of Great Britain would be comparable in time to using roads. It seems a no brainer. And would recover costs as national and international haulage companies would pay for usage.

Is bad cash-flow a challenge to your business? If your business is carrying too much debt then it can put a strain on the company and affect the kinds of decisions you can make about expansion and business development. But, according to Nick Carter at The Wilkes Partnership, many people are reluctant to ‘go legal’ with their debtors because they fear that the debt recovered will be swallowed up by excessive legal fees and it will take up too much of their already overstretched time with no end in sight. “This means that they put off coming to see us so that by the time they do it is harder to resolve and can be more expensive,” he says. “People do not realise that good litigation lawyers actually see litigation as a last resort and will make every effort to recover the debt via communication, mediation and negotiation before instigating court proceedings. And if litigation is unavoidable, then you will have the right sort of advice in place should it need to go further. But in reality around only one in twenty cases go all the way through the court system. “More importantly if the debt is higher than £10,000 the legal fees can usually be claimed
from the debtor when the case has been finalised. “If you are chasing smaller debts of up to £10,000 where you cannot normally recover the legal costs then there are less costly options for legal support that make the process worthwhile.” If debt is causing you concern then an initial consultation with a litigation lawyer will go a long way to putting your mind at rest. Heronfield Tales Little “Sollie” - our coffee cup owlet In June I was brought a baby 5-6 week old Tawny owl which had fallen out of its nest. It still had all its downy feathers, soft like cotton wool, essential to retain warmth when babies are alone in the nest whilst the mother hunts. Food was cut into tiny bits to feed the baby owlet using tweezers, replicating the way he’d have been fed by his mother. After 2 weeks he fed himself and in a further few weeks began tearing meat up. The little fella was over the worst, as this was an essential requirement to independent living. Something owls do is regurgitate pellets of undigested food made up from fur, feather and bones, similar to a cat throwing up fur balls. Their natural food is mice, voles and small invertebrates. By the end of summer his adult feathers arrived so he could fly. I put him into an aviary with an older disabled Tawny owl for company. In no time the two were sitting side by side on the perch twittering to each other. Tawny had been brought into me after a buzzard had attacked him in Temple Balsall. Because of his wounds, he had been hit by a car.
When all Sollie’s down had been replaced the decision was made to go for release back to the wild. We try to return our recovered creatures close to where we found them but when Sollie first arrived, he was so tiny he’d have fit into a coffee cup so there was no instinctive connection to a specific location. We did a ‘soft’ release one evening in November from Heronfield. He is still fed every evening on top of the aviary where he returns for a free meal and to be close to Tawny. Lawn Care Tips for Spring Summer may feel like a long way off, but if you want your lawn to be at its best for all those garden parties and barbecues, then now is the time to start giving it some TLC. So here are a few handy words of advice from local lawn-care specialist Phil Harrison. The dark, damp days of winter mean that your garden may have become overrun with moss, particularly in shady areas under trees or fences. Helping your lawn fight back is a four step process starting with a treatment to attack the moss. Secondly, scarify the lawn with a rake to get rid of as much moss as possible, next re-seed any bare patches and finally put in place a fertilisation programme to strengthen the grass. Whilst this approach is
perfect for small areas, the job on the whole of your lawn could prove time consuming and hard work! Calling in a lawn-care professional with specialist machinery, products and expertise can save you time and money in the long run.
If you'd like to know more please call Phil Harrison, Lawnscience Solihull, on 07917 004 450.

Honours & The Queen's Awards You might have heard of HONOURS and QUEEN’S AWARDS but how much do you know about them? In spite of the number of exceptional people in the West Midlands, the area does not receive its fair share of honours like MBE (Merit of the British Empire) and BEM (British Empire Medal). Why? Simply because there are insufficient nominations. Perhaps you can help remedy this by nominating those exceptional people you know (but please do so without their knowledge). The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest honour that can be bestowed upon outstanding groups of individuals who give their time freely to benefit others. Winners are invited to the Queen’s Garden party at Buckingham Palace and receive the award from the Lord-Lieutenant, demonstrating the huge level of respect in which volunteering is held. Groups solely involved in fundraising for charitable purposes are not eligible. It is more for the thousands of unsung heroes of volunteers who, for three years or more, have supported others or perhaps helped preserve a community’s heritage. The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are highly prestigious awards for outstanding
achievement by UK businesses more than three years old in the categories of Innovation, International Trade and Sustainable Development. An award for Enterprise Promotion is also given to individuals who encourage entrepreneurial skills in others. As with the one for voluntary service, winners of the Enterprise Award attend a reception hosted at Buckingham Palace by Her Majesty the Queen and receive the award from the Lord- Lieutenant at their premises. Winning brings accolades, worldwide recognition and raises employee pride and morale. Jaguar Land Rover’s export success won the 2014 Queen’s Award for Enterprise – a first for a business in Solihull. We have great people and great organisations in the West Midlands. Help tell the world by nominating outstanding people for Honours and Awards and encouraging a business to apply for The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise. Sleep solutions for youngsters Ever wondered where the money from The Big Lottery goes? Much of it is for good causes and a valuable one has won a bid for funding to help the families of disabled children and young people in Solihull. Face2Face is a national scheme run by the charity SCOPE. They connect parents together for practical and emotional support. Over seventy-five parents or carers have now accessed the service since its introduction in Solihull and now much-welcomed additional funding has given Face2Face the ability to continue with its work which also gives training to parents who become befrienders. It is recognised that between 40% and 70% of disabled children and those with additional needs, struggle to get the essential sleep they need. Individual support as well as sleep clinics and workshops at convenient venues are now available to Solihull families. Sleep Solutions is a different service that operates across the UK working with families and local organisations to help children 2 - 19yrs old with a sleep disorder.

Jayne, a mum of a disabled youngster says, “I hope other families benefit as much from Sleep Solutions as mine has. Now we all get a good night’s sleep and can’t wait to do things together.” If your child has problems such as being unable to fall asleep or waking a lot in the night Sleep Solutions offers support to help everyone get the sleep they need and it won’t cost a penny. Contact Jacqueline O’Mahony for more information on 07436 588399 or email: Jacqueline.omahony@scope.org.uk For parent support, contact Face2Face, Angela Williams on 07772010685 email: angela.williams@scope.org.uk Scope exists to make this country a place where disabled people have the same opportunities as everyone else. Until then we will be there.
Get your project funded by the community! The kindness of strangers is changing business... Have you ever dreamt of the day when a common need could be recognised and the resources and platform to fill that need were readily available to you? Well CrowdPatch offers exactly that. Whether you’re an aspiring entrepreneur or simply have some exciting ideas that would benefit your community, this is the place for those innovative thoughts to become a reality. We at My Solihull have recently set up a South Birmingham and Solihull ‘patch’ on CrowdPatch to help you start a crowd funding campaign. Here are some handy pointers to bear in mind before your ideas take flight...
make little effort to learn about your campaign - people have incredibly short attention spans!
1. Fully develop your proposal, half baked campaigns won’t capture the imagination / faith of your audience.
8. Keep everybody in the loop! Communication is key to maintaining interest and holding onto your supporting community, they’ll appreciate the news whether it’s good or bad.
2. Your supporters want to be as involved as possible, introduce yourself / your team properly and keep things personal. 3. Get the wheels in motion before you start a campaign, if you don’t already have a community to tap into, try and get the attention of a handful of influential figures who might be interested in your project. 4. Social media; start hash tag trends and tap into your existing social network to gain initial support for your campaign. 5. Make a video! Visually marketing your proposal on social media allows people to
6. Make a web page. Your campaign may be a local niche or an international interest, making a web page will allow anyone who’s interested in helping promote your cause have instant access to a press release they can post as well as all your vital information. 7. Don’t ask for money immediately, people will naturally want to support your ideas once you’ve captured their interest, what you need to think about most is what you can offer them in exchange for their support. If nothing else you can always remember to thank your donors.
Ruby Watson Call or email us - we’d be happy to spend time discussing your project ideas, we’re here to help. 0121 689 0432 rubywatson@swanpublishing.org You can also visit our patch online at www. crowdpatch.co.uk/southbirmingham

Hey there, would you like to connect? Making connections is so critical to our mental health that scientists put it up there with thirst and hunger. If you’re eager for more ways to connect with the community don’t worry, we can help... If you have any projects, news or events of local interest tell us, and we’ll spread the word. Getting in touch is simple, just follow and mention us @MY_Solihull and www.facebook. com/pages/my-solihull-knowle-dorridge and let us know your news and what you think of the magazine. How better to understand and be a part of the community than knowing each one of you? Don’t be shy, think of our Facebook and Twitter pages as a community noticeboard. Being community orientated means we want to know what you think… about everything.
So let's get connected? Ruby Watson

University of The Third Age The U3A in Solihull Are you waking up in the morning and thinking….”What Now?” The author Ruth Burke said “Only boring people get bored,” but not those who are part of U3A as they’re busy enjoying life with purpose. It’s surprising considering their size how few know about this brilliant organisation, so first a bit of background. It began in 1981 by three people who shared one common vision: Education which they could control. Like minded people came together to form U3A where teachers learn and the learners - teach: a learning co-operative of not so young anymore, retired people. Membership of U3A is open to those not in full-time employment, irrespective of race, religion or politics. There is neither a lower nor an upper age limit and no qualifications are sought nor offered. Learning is for its own sake, with enjoyment being prime.
unusual it may seem, you’ll find people who have formed an activity or interest group. The circles meet regularly often in each other’s homes, sharing their knowledge, skills and experiences, learning from one another. There are literally hundreds of these individual circle groups within the Solihull U3As. Although each U3A will have its own committee of management, they take a ‘bottom up’ approach, never imposing ideas upon the members but rather reacting to and implementing their members’ suggestions. The interest groups are financially self-supporting but there is a membership joining fee.
In the few square miles of Solihull there are 15 main groups forming the Solihull Cluster. Nationally there are over 900 U3As.
Joyce - a long time member says “U3A has enhanced my social life, allowed me to form valued new friendships and provided me with widespread knowledge and entertainment.”
If you have an interest in a subject or a hobby you’d like to take up no matter how dull or

The My Solihull film review HIGHLY RECOMMENDED VIEWING
Woody Allen's - MIDNIGHT IN PARIS (2010) Woody Allen, his films and his style, is like marmite - love or loathe. People either get him or they don’t. Regardless of personal feeling - respect should be given for the legacy of successful films he’s been responsible for. Woody Allen is an actor, scriptwriter, director, comedian, musician and a film maker. In over 50 years he’s directed 48 films and appeared in 45; written 12 Broadway plays; received 24 Oscar nominations; won 4 times as well as receiving numerous other awards too many to detail here. One of those Academy Awards in 2011 was for Best Original Screenplay for Midnight In Paris. He was then aged 76. Midnight in Paris is a charming film all the family can enjoy. The cast includes Oscar winning Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Michael Sheen, Tom Hiddleston, Kathy Bates, Marion Cottilard, Adrien Brody and Carla Bruni in a guest appearance.
with the bride’s family. Owen Wilson plays Gil, a successful scriptwriter, struggling against writer’s block. They bump into a scholarly but irritating friend also visiting Paris with his girlfriend. In an effort to escape them, Gil on a meander around Paris late at night, finds himself transported back in time to 1920’s Paris, and to a nightclub where Cole Porter plays the piano. When the clock strikes midnight he is returned back to present day. The space-time continuum opens again for him and on various evenings he meets Ernest Hemingway, Scott Fitzgerald and many others. As the film progresses our hero realises that life in 1920’s Paris isn’t as rosy as would appear and in typical Woody Allen style the magic brings the gift of insight to our hero, freeing him from his creative writing blocks. The music soundtrack delights even if you’re not a jazz fan. So if you’re looking for a good DVD to enjoy with the family then try this delightful film. You’ll not be disappointed.
You are introduced to an engaged young American couple, enjoying a visit to Paris
