ood afternoon and welcome back to the Swansea.com Stadium for today ’s Championship fixture against Bristol City. As everyone is aware, February is a very busy month with seven league games taking place. Last Saturday’s clash against B l a c k b u r n b r o u g ht a b o u t a terrific atmosphere inside the stadium which really drove the players on to victory. P laying for the best par t of 40 minutes with ten men was always going to be a challenge, but the players dug deep and showed tremendous character and togetherness to hold out and get the three points. It was also great to see Michael O b afe m i g et h i s f i r st h o m e goal for the club in front of our supporters, while the reception for Jamie Paterson was really positive and it was good to see him back playing football again. Unfortunately we were on the wrong end of a defeat in midweek as we suffered a 3-0 loss at Stoke on Tuesday night.
But the nature of the Championship and its schedule means we have a chance to bounce back quickly and hopefully put things right this afternoon in front of our supporters. L ast month we announced the formation of a dementia consultation group in association with Alzheimer 's Society Cymru, which is our chosen charity for this season. A s part of our collaboration, the club aims to be a dementiafriendly organisation by the conclusion of this season. And this week saw the club host its first working consultation group, with the objective of further understanding the needs of people living with dementia and those who care for them. Alzheimer’s Society has launched its Sport United Against Dementia campaign, which is bringing the sporting world together to create real and lasting change for fans, players, and former players.
The campaign aims to make the sporting industry more dementia-friendly, so people with dementia can continue to enjoy watching sports, improve and provide expert support and fund vital research to better understand the connections between sport and dementia. Season ticket sales for next season have been hugely e n c o u ra g i n g a n d w h i l e t h e early bird window for renewals has now closed, season ticket holders can still renew their ticket and keep their seat for the 2022-23 campaign until midnight on Thursday, March 31. F i n a l l y, I ’ d l i k e t o e x t e n d a warm welcome to the management , players, st aff and directors from Bristol City who have made the short trip to across to south west Wales for today’s game. Enjoy the game, Julian

ood afternoon and welcome back to the Swansea.com Stadium for our Championship game against Bristol City. We come into today’s game on the back of a very disappointing defeat against Stoke on Tuesday night. Too many times this season we have had a good result on a Saturday – as we did with the win over Blackburn – and followed it up with a poor result on a Tuesday or Wednesday. I was angry with the way we started the game because there was nowhere near enough courage or intensity, but going into half time at 0-0 meant we gave ourselves a chance. However, to concede within a minute of the second half starting was really poor and you cannot do that. Obviously we lost Benno (Ryan Bennett) to a red card and the penalty meant the game got away from us, but ultimately we – including myself – were not good enough on the night.
The fans deserve better and we are better than that. I believe we have a great group of players here with plenty of character and we have prepared for today’s game and we will be ready. We have to make sure we react positively because it was a tough night on Tu e s d a y a f t e r t h e e l a t i o n we experienced on Saturday against Blackburn. Last Saturday we showed real character and resilience to dig in and get the win despite playing the best part of 40 minutes with ten men after Ryan (Manning) was sent off. I was so proud of the players for how they responded to a setback and found great energy to get us through. We have spoken about digging in and there’s a big mention for the guys who c ame off the bench in R yan Bennett, Korey Smith and Joel L atibeaudiere.
They were watching the game, supporting their team-mates at half-time and then they come on and help us finish the game incredibly well. The supporters were magnific ent onc e again, as they are always are whether we play home or away, and we know today will be another great atmosphere. You really helped get us over the line last Saturday and we know this is an important game given the locality of the teams. It was a terrific atmosphere in the reverse fixture back in August as we achieved our first win of the season following that 1-0 victory at Ashton Gate. Our travelling support that night was something to behold and hopefully we can send you all home happy again here today. Enjoy the game, Russell

ood afternoon and welcome to everyone joining us from around the world for this afternoon’s Championship fixture against Bristol City at the Swansea.com Stadium. Our last home game against Blackburn Rovers was a real battling performance and we were delighted to come away with the three points after playing almost 40 minutes with 10 men. We really had to dig deep against a solid Blackburn team who had only lost one of their previous 13 games and who sat in second place in the table for a reason. It was brilliant to have Pato back and it was great to see him make an instant impact
as he set up Michael’s winner. He picked up where he had left off and we couldn’t have been happier for him.
It was tough and we’re determined to react positively and quickly with a good performance against Bristol City this afternoon.
It marked Michael’s first home goal too and we were delighted for him, it was a powerful header and hopefully it is the first of many goals at the Swansea.com Stadium for him.
We face a Bristol City side high on confidence following a home victory on Wednesday but we’ll ensure we approach the match with the right mindset and will be ready for whatever challenge.
In contrast, Tuesday’s performance at Stoke was well below the levels we expect of ourselves and we came away hugely disappointed.
Fixtures between Swansea and Bristol City are well known for their electric atmospheres and the match at Ashton Gate earlier in the season was no different.
We lacked intensity and the game was changed with the sending off and the penalty but we were nowhere near good enough on the night.
It’s a game we’re looking forward to and we’ll be looking to capitalise on the home advantage. Enjoy the game today! Matt

od ay we we l c o m e o u r Severnside rivals Bristol City to the Swansea.com Stadium. Our last home game saw us come through a dramatic and tense affair with high-flying Blackburn Rovers. It also coincided with the first home game I’d missed since supporters were allowed back into stadiums and listening to that second half car radio commentary was not for the faint hearted. It was back to earth with a bump when we were outplayed on a cold Tuesday night in Stoke. It has never been one of our better hunting grounds but even that couldn’t disguise what was a low-key performance with the effects of Saturday evening’s game being included among the reasons why. That is small comfort to those hardy souls who travelled up and down the M6 on Tuesday evening and I applaud them and all of our amazing Jack Army who continue to travel all over the country and provide the team with some of the best away support in the Championship. As I write, we have one eye on an impor t ant event c oming up for the Trust. Next Tuesday (February 15) is our 21st AGM
where I’m hoping to see many of our members in attendance, albeit virtually once again. I’ve begun thinking about what has been a particularly hectic first few months as Trust Chair and also for our new Trust Board, half of whom put themselves forward for the very first time. When we all convened as a new board last August we noticed we’d lost 30+ years of experience and at arguably one of the most critical times in the Swans Trust since we formed over 20 years ago. I was speaking to many of them after our monthly board meeting earlier this week and they all universally agreed that they have found it a more challenging time than they anticipated when they put themselves forward for election last summer. I’m sure it comes as no surprise the underlying issue that has affected us all has been the ongoing legal case arising from the 2016 sale of the club. Just like yourselves we are all passionate supporters of the club and we put ourselves forward to the join the Trust Board because we feel we have something to offer that can make a difference for our members and supporters.
That continues to be heavily impac ted by the c ase but I am immensely proud that we have managed to keep regular conversations going with the club’s local management team as we look at ideas and initiatives that will benefit our supporters. All have been extremely we l c o m i n g t o m ys e l f, Te r r y Sinnett as our new Supporter Director and indeed all of the Trust Board whenever the need arises. I will expand on this and the type of work we have been doing in my Chairman’s address next week. I felt it important to stress that despite the ongoing legal action casting a cloud over many aspects of what the Trust should be doing, both as a shareholder and a functioning Supporters’ Trust, we still work as hard as we can to represent our members and every Swans supporter as a whole. I really hope we can pick up some more points today and I look forward to seeing many of our members at our AGM next week. YJB!

THE GAFFER
Pearson is now fast approaching the 12-month mark of his time at Bristol City. The former defender's managerial career stretches back to 1998 where he started out at Carlisle United. The now Bristol City manager has been around the block being at clubs such as West Brom, Newcastle United and Southampton to name a few.
NIGEL PEARSON
His most successful reign as a gaffer came at his two stints at Leicester City, where he lifted the League One title aswell as securing the Foxes promotion to the Premier League in 2014. More recently, Pearson managed Watford in the Premier League. He made the switch from OH Leuven in Belgium to Vicarage Road with the Hornets six points adrift of the relegation zone, however, he departed the club with the lead ahead of the chasing survival hopefuls just three points behind.
CLUB CAPTAIN
Goalkeeper Daniel Bentley signed for Bristol City in 2019 after three years with Brentford. The goalkeeper was scouted by Arsenal at age eight, and was brought in to sign with the London giants’ academy programme. Before his stint with Brentford, Bentley spent seven seasons with Southend United. He helped them earn promotion to League One in 2015, in a season which saw him earn their Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year and Community Player of the Year awards.
DANIEL BENTLEY

Since his arrival, Bentley has made 113 appearances for the Robins. Bentley was made club captain earlier in the season, but has not featured in the starting line-up for a number of weeks.

HOW’S THEIR FORM?
Bristol City were established in 1894, originally as Bristol South End Football Club, and have spent most of their time in the second tier of English football, and were League Cup semi-finalists in 2017/2018, defeating Manchester United with Swansea’s Korey Smith scoring the winner.
Poor. The Robins have slipped down the table after only picking up 4 points out of a possible 15 in their last five matches.
However, in their distant past, the Robins were FA Cup runners-up missing out to Man United with Sandy Turnbull scoring the only goal of the game for the Red Devils. Bristol were last in the top-flight in 1980, and despite the ambition to reach the Premier League, the closest they came was an 8th place finish in 2019 under Lee Johnson.
W i t h i n t h e i r l a st f i ve t h ey we re h a m m e re d by Championship leaders Fulham at Craven Cottage 6-2, but they did bounce back a week later with a 3-2 victory over Cardiff City. assengo arrived at Bristol in 2019 from eight-time Ligue 1 winners AS Monaco.
The 20-year-old has shown a lot of promise since his arrival and has attracted interest from European top-flight clubs such as Freiburg and Watford. Managed by Thierry Henry at Monaco, he made UEFA Champions League history in 2018 against Club Brugge. He was the first player born in the 21st century to make an appearance in the showcase tournament and coincidentally that was also his debut for Monaco. Despite being a youngster, Bristol signed Massengo for the club’s second highest record fee, with former Chelsea academy product Tomas Kalas being valued slightly higher.

The Austrian is The Robins’ top goalscorer this season by quite some margin with 14 goals to his name. Chris Martin is closest to him with eight scored.
The Bristol Academy product is undoubtedly one of the first names on Nigel Pearson’s team sheet as a result of his all-round performances.
Weimann has appeared in every single fixture this season for Pearson’s side and without the forward firing, Bristol could well be looking over the shoulder towards the relegation zone.
Brother of Cardiff City Under-23s player Jai Semenyo, he made a mark at Ashton Gate claiming the club’s Young Player of the Year award last season.

he forward is enjoying a wellr o u n d e d s e a s o n s o f a r. H e h a s chipped in wherever on the field, contributing four goals and six assists in the Championship.

rom the elation of a 1 – 0 win to the exasperation of a 3 – 0 defeat in the space of just over three days. Oh, the joy of being a football fan! It isn’t easy, is it? And the win/lose, play well/ badly roller coaster is never a comfortable ride, but hey, that’s football. It doesn’t change! It sucks us in. We come back, game after game, give everything we’ve got to those 90 plus minutes and live and breathe for every morsel we can find outside of match days. We know, because Russell Martin has told us, that this season is one for ‘building something and having a running start next season’. He’s also talked about the need for supporters to support the team during this building process. And we know that when you build, the quality of your foundations makes the difference in the long run. Football isn’t a science, you don’t find a formula and ‘hey presto’, everything falls into place. Football is about people and every last one of us, whether we are fans, players, coaches, investors etc has a part to play in making our club better.
But what we got on the pitch was more than decent and what we got off it was a sight to behold – two players trying to channel their inner professionalism and failing, but succeeding in putting a smile on a lot of faces. If you don’t know what I’m referring to, it is the post-match interview with Michael Obafemi and Jamie Paterson. It was the job of Sophie Davis, one of the media team here at Swansea City, to get the post-match reaction from both players. Let’s just say she earned her money and showed great patience to boot. If you haven’t seen it, do go and check it out because it really is very funny, especially because both players are trying their best to do what is required of them – but not succeeding! Kudos to Sophie, who kept going with her attempts to find out how Obafemi was feeling after scoring his first goal for the club, but we all know what it’s like when you get a fit of the giggles! What should have been a simple couple of minute reaction piece ended taking considerably longer. 10 out of 10, Sophie! The video went viral and was picked up by Sky, among others.
Of course it’s disappointing when results and performances don’t go the way we think they should, but sometimes trusting the process and savouring the positives is what needs to be our focus.
And it got me thinking about the importance of enjoying the wins, savouring the small victories - whatever they might be - and going with the flow, especially with the unexpected things that put a smile on our face.
Let’s be fair, most people weren’t expecting a result against second-placed Blackburn last weekend. We were hoping for a point and bracing ourselves for less.
Sometimes, being able to share a laugh with a mate is priceless.

ydi hi ddim yn ymddangos y bydd Abertawe yn y ras am ddyrchafiad ar ddiwedd y tymor. Gyda 16 gêm o’r tymor yn weddill mae’n ymddangos fod y bwlch rhwng y chwe safle uchaf a’r Elyrch yn ormod.
yn plesio’r cefnogwyr. Maen nhw wedi cael y mwyafrif o’r meddiant yn y rhan fwyaf o’r gemau y tymor yma, ac mae’n ymddangos fod y chwaraewyr wedi perchnogi’r dull o chwarae. Be sydd angen i’r tîm ei wneud yw troi’r holl feddiant yn goliau.
Doeddwn i ddim yn disgwyl i Abertawe fod ymysg y ceffylau blaen yn y Bencampwriaeth y tymor yma hynny'n yn fwy na dim oherwydd y ddiffyg amser paratoi gafodd Russell Martin ar ôl cael ei benodi ym mis Awst. Mae’r cyfnod ‘preseason’ mor bwysig i bob rheolwr, ond chafodd Martin ddim amser o gwbl i weithio efo’r chwaraewyr ar y maes ymarfer cyn i’r tymor ddechrau.
Mae Martin hefyd wedi dangos yn ei gyfnod byr wrth y llyw fod ganddo lygaid am chwaraewyr da. Mae Flynn Downes wedi bod yn fargen am £1.5m, a dw i’n disgwyl ei weld yn mynd yn ei flaen i chwarae ar y lefel uchaf. Mae Jamie Paterson wedi bod yn un o chwaraewyr mwyaf dylanwadol yr Elyrch y tymor yma (er be sydd wedi digwydd yn ddiweddar), tra fod Andy Fisher yn edrch fel golwr hyderus sy’n gyfforddus hefyd efo’r bêl wrth ei draed.
Wrth gwrs fe all unrhyw beth ddigwydd yn ystod y pedwar mis nesaf, ac os y caiff Abertawe rediad da mae cyrraedd y gemau ail-gyfle yn dal yn bosibl. Ond dw i’n cael y teimlad y bydd y tîm hyfforddi yn defnyddio’r gemau sy’n weddill i ddechrau paratoi ar gyfer y dyfodol. Mae ‘na resymau i fod yn obeithiol ar gyfer y tymor nesaf yn barod. Mae’n bwysig bod Abertawe yn gorffen y tymor yn gryf fel bo ganddyn nhw ychydig bach o fomentwm yn mynd i fewn i’r tymor nesaf. Dyma gyfle rhai chwaraewyr i ddangos eu bod am fod yn rhan o gynlluniau hir-dymor Russell Martin. Mae ‘na dal ddigon yn y fantol i’r Elyrch, gan ddechrau efo’r gêm yn erbyn Bristol City heddiw.

FINLEY BURNS WAS THE FOURTH OF SWANSEA CITY’S FIVE JANUARY SIGNINGS AND WILL BE HOPING TO GET THE CHANCE TO MAKE HIS DEBUT THIS AFTERNOON. HERE, HE TALKS ABOUT THE PRESSURES OF BEING SIGNED BY MANCHESTER CITY WHEN BARELY A TEENAGER, HIS MAIN INFLUENCES AT THE ETIHAD AND HIS EXCITEMENT AT HIS SWANSEA CITY OPPORTUNITY. CONTINUES ON NEXT PAGE....
Finley, welcome to Swansea City, we are delighted to have you here. How does it feel to be here? I am delighted. I am looking forward to it and I feel like I am in great company. When did you first hear about the interest from the Swans, and what is it about this club that made you want to come here? I was on the train down to London to see my grandparents and then I got a phone call from my dad saying, “well done son, you are moving to the Swans”. I was delighted, then as soon as I could, I had to drive back up and then come back down. I’m buzzing.
The Swansea City philosophy is very similar to Man City ’s with the emphasis being around possession-based football and playing out from the back . Do you think your experiences playing that style of football will stand you in good stead here? I would like to think so. I think I have been prepared the best I could have been. The work with Pep and the youth coaches at Man City is going to be the same as what it will be with the Swans. So, I feel I will be able t o do what is required of me.
A bit of a whirlwind of a weekend for you then, but have you had a chance to speak to Russell Martin and the staff yet? Yes, I have spoken to them. They are all great and they are delighted to have me here and I feel looked after already, so I am looking forward to learning under him (Russell Martin) and progressing. I have heard that you went to the same school as Michael Obafemi, you may be familiar with Joel Latibeaudiere, who also came from Manchester City. Are there any other familiar faces here for you? Those two obviously. Michael was a couple of years above me in school and then Joel at City and it is good to see them doing well. I hope to follow in their footsteps.
PAGE 33
You signed for Man City as a 13-year-old, which was the record fee for a 13-year-old back then. You have inevitably grown as both, a player, and a person since then. In more recent years, you have been able to learn from the likes of Pep Guardiola and some of the biggest names in world football. Do you feel like you have been able to take quite alot from them? Yeah, definitely. I feel like I have developed alot as a person and a player. I have matured alot obviously, since I was 13, so I feel like everything is going in the right direction. Training with the best players in the world made me realise I need to up my game to get to that level. You made your senior debut for Man City back in September in the League Cup against Wycombe Wanderers. In that game you were marking one former Swan, Adebayo Akinfenwa. There is no getting away from the fact that he is a beast of a guy, so that was a challenge, but do you feel like playing against someone with that vast amount of Football League experience has helped to prepare you for what the Championship will bring? Definitely. The Championship is supposed to be more physical than the Prem and having experience going up against a beast like himself (Adebayo Akinfenwa), has made me come to realise that I need to become more physically equipped to deal with Championship standard. There was a picture after that Wycombe game doing the rounds on social media of you, and a few of the other boys who also made their debuts that evening, sitting on the pitch after the game, taking it all, and realising what you achieved. Do you think that gave you a taste of playing senior football and made you hungrier for more? Just playing with a big crowd made all of us feel inspired to achieve more than we were doing, and we felt like we were progressing in the right direction. The aim is to play in front of the crowds and make the fans happy.
PAGE 34
You recently signed a new long-term contract with Manchester City. Was that a proud achievement to see your hard work paying off? Definitely. It is good to see it being recognised by the coaches, aswell as myself, because I feel like I have been working hard and progressing well at City. A couple of your Man City teammates have also gone out on loan for career progression. (Taylor) Harwood-Bellis has just gone on loan to Stoke and (Callum) Doyle at Sunderland. Seeing them go out on loan, has it made you look you forward even more to going out on loan to further your career? It is great to see my other teammates doing well. I am proud of them for doing what they are doing, and it inspires me, and I am sure it inspires the boys back home to get out there and show everyone what we can do. You were a key member of the Manchester City Under-23 side that won Premier League 2 last season. What do you think are the ingredients for success? Being ambitious and everyone must be brave. My former coach (Enzo Maresca) was telling us to be brave on the ball and take risks, and everybody had to do that at times to essentially get out what he wanted from us. We ended up going on to win the league and breaking records, so it shows it paid off. For Swans fans who may not have seen you play before, how would you sum yourself up as a player? I would say I am brave, and I always will want to give everything for the club. I would die for the badge and I can’t wait to get out in front out of all of them. Finally, what do you hope to achieve personally and as a team during your time here at Swansea? To develop as a player obviously, but the main thing is to get the team going in the right direction, whether that is on the pitch or from the side. I just want to help as much as I can.

I
n the latest chapter of our series of features recalling Swansea City ’s historic 1980-81 season, the Swans put themselves on course for victory and promotion at Deepdale, but any thoughts of doing things the easy way soon fall by the wayside. The Swans did not make the start they had been hoping for as the hosts, desperately battling to avoid relegation, initially had the better of proceedings. But any visiting nerves started to settle when Leighton James produced a moment of magic to put the Swans, in their now iconic navy and light blue change strip, a goal to the good. Receiving the ball on the left flank, tight to the touchline, James drove forward and infield to push his marker back towards the Preston box. A drop of the shoulder allowed him to escape into the area before curling a brilliant, floating strike over the keeper and into the far corner.
“It was a fantastic goal,” says Alan Curtis. “I laid it back to Robbie James and he sent it out to Leighton. “You knew he was going to cut in, but you could not stop it. “It settled us, we did not want halftime with the way it was going.”
PAGE 38
“We got about 20 minutes in and we hadn’t had a shot on goal,” says Wyndham Evans. “I was thinking we ne e de d something for all those fans who were there, and he got that ball and it was a fantastic goal.” It settled the Swans and they would double their lead three minutes later, midfielder Tommy Craig – in the side after Toshack had left out his own cousin John Mahoney – calmly controlled a deflected cross at the far post to send a volley through the onrushing keeper and into the net. Toshack and his team looked well set, but a Preston onslaught was inevitable given their own dire need for something from the game. O n c e t h ey p u l l e d o n e b a c k through Alex Bruce they almost laid siege to the Swansea goal, missing a handful of opportunities as the minutes ticked down towards full-time. “They battered us second half,” recalls Curtis. “Nobby Stiles was their manager and he must have got into them at halftime because they just peppered us with shots and crosses. “Their centre-half Mick Baxter had a header that I was sure had gone in, I still wonder if there was a hole in the net somewhere.” “Speedy and I had an argument over their goal,” recalls Evans.
“He was marking Bruce but, to be fair, he played brilliantly that day. We all did. From Dave Stewart in goal all the way through.” “They threw everything at us, we had to hold them and hope we could get another and it would be enough,” adds Jeremy Charles.
“I always remember it because it was Robbie, Curt and myself,” says Charles. “That finished the sequence off. Curt went down the right and cut inside to Robbie.
And, so it was, with time running out, that the clinching goal arrived for the Swans.
“He laid it on for me just around the edge of the penalty area, and I think someone behind me was shouting at me to whack it into the stand and waste some time.
Fittingly it was crafted by three players who had been with the club through those hard times of the mid-70s.
“So, obviously I completely mishit it with my left foot and it flew into the top corner.
And it seems only fair to let Curtis and Charles tell its story in their own words.
“It was great for us three, but everyone contributed throughout the game and the season.
“ The ball came to me on the right, my first thought was to take it to the corner and waste some time,” says Curtis.
“Everyone chipped in together, but it was lovely for us to be involved in that goal. It created history, it’s a special thing and something you’ll never forget.
“Things then started to open up, and there was nothing safer than to give the ball to Robbie. “But Robbie, unusually for him, miscontrolled it a little bit and had to sneak it on to Jeremy. “I am sure a lot of us just shouted at him to boot it into the crowd and waste time. “But he never listened to me anyway, and he’s c aught it sweetly with his left foot and smashed it in the top corner. “ That was the first time the realisation dawned that we were going to do it.”
“Although it ’s the dads and g ra n d p a s w h o re m e m b e r i t these days!” It meant the Swansea players could play out those final minutes soaking up the atmosphere, knowing what they were about to achieve as the away end bounced and rocked to the celebrations of the travelling Jacks. And those celebrations would prove to be almost as memorable as the match itself.

Jaden Forrester put the Swans ahead in the first half and the Swans soaked up a lot of Addicks pressure for the majority of the game, only for a 90th minute Addicks equaliser to deny them a three-point haul.

Joel Cotterill came close with two minutes to go, his superb dribble saw him break through the Charlton defence, but he poked his effort just wide of the goal.
wansea City Under-23s had victory snatched away from them as title-chasing Charlton Athletic netted a lastgasp equaliser at Dartford.
The Swans faced a Charlton side that included January acquisitions Juan Castillo and Nile John, who are set to feature for their first team. The two sides looked to play in similar styles, with the teams looking to maintain possession and build from the back. The first chance of the game fell to Charlton, Hady Ghandour firing just past the post from the edge of the box. H o w e v e r, F o r r e s t e r w o u l d give the Swans the lead. Ghandour broke through for the Addicks late in the first half, but a superb last ditch challenge from Butler prevented the defender's shot finding the net. Juan Castillo, who joined the host s from Chelsea on loan in J anuary, had the chanc e to level before the break, but a fantastic save from Jamie Searle ensured the Swans took their 1-0 lead into the interval. Ben Lloyd had the chance to double the Swans lead shortly after the resumption, Sam Leverett finding the midfielder on the edge of the box, but his low effort was dragged wide of the post.
And the hosts went straight up the other end to level, with Euan Williams converting a cross from Castillo in the 90th minute.

wanse a City U nder -18s secured back-to-back league wins for the first time this season as they claimed the bragging rights against rivals Cardiff City.
But six minutes later Cardiff were level, Isaac Jefferies broke down the left and was dragged down in the box by Kai Ludvigsen. Jefferies stepped up to the spot and converted to make it 1-1.
The Swans travelled to the third placed side in the Professional D evelopment L e ague s outh group and found an early lead through Kyrell Wilson.
Kyle Kenniford then forced a good save from Swans keeper Tyler Evans, his curling effort from the edge of the box being pushed over the crossbar.
T he ho st s e qualis e d with a p e n a l t y, b u t F i l i p L i s s a h ’ s second-half header proved the difference as the Swans came out on top in the derby. The visitors opened the scoring after some fantastic passing play between Wilson and Geoff Bony gave the former a simple finish as he converted his second goal in as many games.
The Swans remained dangerous throughout the half though, Iwan Morgan and Bony linking well, but failing to really test the Bluebirds goalkeeper. Jada Mawongo made an important clearance off the line after Charlie Crew broke down the right and managed to cut into the Swansea area. Just minutes later the Swans regained their lead, Morgan’s shot deflected upwards and Lissah reacted fastest, his looping header at the back post finding the back of the net to restore the Swans lead.
Morgan had the chance to double the Swans advantage, Josh Carey sliding the forward through, but his effort was well saved. SWANS LADIES 2 PWLLHELI LADIES 0

wansea City Ladies advanced to the semi-finals of the FAW Women’s Cup with a dominant performance against Pwllheli at Llandarcy. The Swans started on the front foot, controlling possession and the flow of the game, but they couldn’t convert that into a goal in the first half. The deadlock was broken however, in the second half by Chloe Chivers’ long-range effort. Five minutes later the lead was doubled and a place in the last four of the competition was sealed by a cool and composed Katy Hosford finish. Chivers worried Pwllheli’s goalkeeper Maria Julio in the early stages from a free-kick, however, the forward’s effort whistled over the bar. Chivers was lively and forced the goalkeeper into making a fine reaction save down to her left to keep the score level. Stacey John-Davis was next to have a chance but her closerange effort was hit at Julio.
A goalmouth scramble followed as Laura Davies hit the bar after she got on the end of Chivers’ delivery. Nia Rees followed up on the rebound, but she was also denied by the woodwork. The frame of the goal came to Pwllheli’s rescue once again as Hosford’s strike from distance clattered off the bar. Chris Church’s side had a strong claim for a penalty before halftime after Stacey Sansome took Hosford down with a wild tackle, but nothing was given. Rhianne Oakley looked to find the opener on the stroke of half-time, however, she could only find the crossbar. But early in the second half the deadlock was broken by Chivers aft e r h e r l o n g - ra n g e s t r i ke founds its way in off the post. The lead was deservedly doubled soon after as John-Davis rolled the ball back to Hosford who finished it with ease.
The Swans maintained the same tempo throughout the second half and were denied a third goal when Julio made a great double save to deny Karmyn Carter first and then Hosford’s shot on the follow-up. Lowri Hughes posed a threat for P wllheli on the c ounter, h o w e v e r, s u b s t i t u t e C h l o e Tiley got back in time to put in a superb sliding challenge.

ins come in all shapes and sizes. We’d all love every three points to be delivered gift wrapped in free flowing attractive football and a glut of goals.
It was wonderful to see Jamie P aterson return to a Swans shirt with such effect as he put in a perfect cross for Michael Obafemi, who showed all his quality with a deadly finish.
For example, few who were here will ever forget the 7-1 victory over today’s visitors Bristol City back in 2005.
I’m sure we were all looking forward to the Swans building on that first half display during the second 45 minutes.
The Swans' time in the Premier L e ague - and on their way there - was littered with performances when the men in white passed teams off the pit ch t o chalk up s ome unforgettable victories.
But losing such an influential player as Ryan Manning so early in the second half was always going to have an effect on the balance of play.
Amongst those was a 3-1 triumph over West Bromwich Albion which many observers consider to be one of the Swans’ best ever performances. Go back even further and John Toshack's team of the late 1970s and early 80s played some wonderfully entertaining football. T h i s i s w h y a r et u r n t o t h e fabled “Swansea Way ” is so coveted by supporters and is a stated ambition of manager Russell Martin. B ut for all those wonderful performances of the past which had pundits purring and sent fans delirious with delight, I’d put last weekend’s victory over Blackburn Rovers up there with the most satisfying I have ever seen. Up against the second-placed team in the division, the home team were full value for their half-time lead.
PAGE 52
Facing one of the form teams in the division, it would have been so easy for heads to drop on the pitch. But they did nothing of the sort. In fact, the players seemed to do the opposite. They grew in stature despite knowing they were going to be up against it for at least 40 minutes against one of the best sides in the division. We’d already seen glimpses of how threatening Cyrus Christie can be going forward, but this was a real test of his defensive qualities and he came through it with flying colours. Ben C abango seemed to be enjoying the challenge of dealing with everything Blackburn could throw at him. And the situation was made for a no-nonsense defender like Ryan Bennett , who was introduc e d t o shore up the defence after the red card.
But it wasn’t just a total rearguard action by the defensive players. The team continued to try to play football when they could and the forward players did all they could to ease the pressure on those behind. Hannes Wolf in particular played a huge part in making sure the Swans caused Blackburn problems further up the pitch. And, of course, Martin and his team played their part from the touchline as they made vital tactical decisions. There’s plenty of time to work on the Swansea Way – that will come with patience and hard work, attributes Martin appears to have in abundance. I’m sure the style of play the manager wants to establish will come – there are already hugely encouraging signs on that front. But you can’t coach grit, determination, spirit and the sheer bloody mindedness not to fold under huge pressure. So, it was massively encouraging to see the squad show those qualities by the bucket load last Saturday evening. No matter how good a team is and no matter how attractive the football they play, sometimes you have to “win ugly” as the saying goes. You have to roll up your sleeves (or you did in the old days before short sleeved shirts became the norm!) and adopt a “they shall not pass” attitude. Not all teams can do this. You have to have a special spirit within the squad and a particular resilience amongst individuals.
All the players who played a part in last Saturday’s victory showed that our squad already has that strength. And just a word for the crowd too. The atmosphere in the last quarter of the match was as good as any over the past few years. However, I have to admit that it was difficult to enjoy as I seemed to spend most of that final quarter checking my watch, which appeared to have stopped at times as the seconds took an age to tick away. It was all worth it in the end as the stadium erupted on the final whistle and all the tension was let loose with a huge roar. Martin said afterwards: "I'm delighted with the win, although I couldn't have as little ball as we had in the last half hour every week. The way they dug in, the resilience they showed - I just feel pride.” You’re not alone Russell. The overwhelming feeling I had at the end of the game was one of immense pride in all those who played a part in what will go down as one of my personal favourite victories. Don’t get me wrong, I’d take a high-scoring runaway victory over a nail-biting 10-man 1-0 win every day of the week. But knowing this team can battle it out with the best of them when they going gets tough is a huge boost to fans’ morale and I’m sure a massive boost to the players too. C’mon you Swans!

FORMER PLAYERS’ ASSOCIATION PAGE 54
E
very former player has a standout game, a match they remember because it has remained imprinted on their mind long after the event. And every one of them recalls the players they played alongside and the memories they made and shared. Popular left-back Vic Gommersall’s highlights include the historic 1966 European Cup Winners’ Cup preliminary round games with FC Slavia Sofia. The home leg at the Vetch Field took place on Wednesday September 21 and Swansea Town hosted the top Bulgarian side who had been league champions seven times and won the Bulgarian Cup four times. The team contained four members of the Bulgarian World Cup squad. The visitors played in a white kit and the Swans in orange. “Those games will always stand out because of the nature of them. As a player you don’t get to be involved in those sorts of occasions often and we certainly didn’t back then,” said Gomersall. “The excitement, the travelling; everything was very different. There were no luxury coaches and planes like there are today, but you got to share the experience with your team-mates and you look back and realise how important that was.” In his match-day programme notes, ‘From the manager’s desk’, Glyn Davies wrote: ‘Tonight is a history making event for Swansea Town. We entertain for the first time ever a world class team in the now glamourous European Cup Winners’ Cup. ‘Slavia have earned the reputation of being a top team on the continent and we only hope that tonight’s match and the high standard of play envisaged can be the forerunner of many more such meetings. ‘Our wholehearted welcome to our friends from Bulgaria – see you in Sofia on October 5th.’ The home tie produced a respectable 1-1 draw, with local lad Keith Todd getting the Swans goal. The away leg ended in a 4-0
defeat which saw Davies’ side crash out of the competition 5-1 on aggregate. A nother Swanse a highlight for the Manchester-born adopted Jack came two years later in February 1968. Fourth Division Swansea were in fourth round FA Cup action against First Division Arsenal in front of a record crowd of 32,786. In 1964 the Swans reached the semi-finals of the competition, beating Liverpool at Anfield before losing to Preston North End in the semifinal. Another cup run was on the cards in ’68. “There was the Arsenal game at the Vetch in front of a record crowd of 32,700-odd supporters. They were packed in like sardines and the atmosphere was unbelievable. “As a player in an atmosphere like that, particularly in a ground like the Vetch where the fans were practically on the pitch, those are the games you never forget. “We were really unlucky because Herbie Williams had a goal disallowed and Bobby Gould got the only goal of the game for them.” The Swans side knocked out by Arsenal included Roy Evans and Brian Purcell, two great servants of the club who tragically lost their lives the following year.
“They had both been released by the Swans and gone to play for Hereford Town,” recalls Gomersall.
“I’ve been very lucky. I’ve got lots of great memories from the game and the good ones outweigh the bad.”
“We were playing Newport County that day and the manager told us that Roy and Brian had been killed on the road on the way to their game.
Gomersall believes that the Former Players’ Association will play an important part in the history of Swansea City because it will open up opportunities to hear from ex players and give them a chance to share their experiences with one another and more widely.
“It was the saddest time. They were two great lads who had been faithful servants. It really was a tragedy and everyone felt it. “I’m 80 in June and when you get to my age it’s the people you remember as well as the matches. “I got to play alongside some greats of the game like Ivor and Lenny Allchurch and Herbie Williams, Brian Evans and I made some great friends. Some we lost far too soon. “Brian Evans came to Llanelli with me and Brian and I went to play with Ivor Allchurch at Pontardawe.
“It’s good now restrictions are lifting because we will have more opportunities to get former players together to have a chat and share memories. “It will be important for the club and good for the city because it’s easy to feel on the outside as a player and it’s important that players know they’re not forgotten.”
Ex Swans who want to be involved with Swansea City Former Players’ Association are asked to fill in the registration form HERE. The club is also keen to hear from relatives and friends of former players who are not online but who might still like to join the FPA. Anyone in this category is asked to call the FPA secretary, Catherine Thomas, on 01792 616420 or email catherinethomas@swanseacity.com Alternatively, the three former players on the committee, chair Lee Trundle, deputy chair Leon Britton and lifelong president Alan Curtis, are also happy to talk to players or their families directly.
