ood evening and welcome back to the Swansea.com Stadium for today ’s Championship fixture against Fulham. It’s been just three days since we were last in action here and it was extremely pleasing to secure a third home win on the bounce. I thought the way we played in the first half was a joy to watch and the first two goals were real evidence of hard work on the training ground. It was great to see both sets of supporters unite on Saturday to show the power of football and coming together to support the people of Ukraine. Swansea City is working with Low Cost Vans and the Swansea City AFC Foundation to help collect items for those in need. As a club we are working on an appeal for donations to those affected, and facilitating delivery of items to St Mary’s Church in the city. Supporters can donate to the stadium between 9am and 12pm on Friday (March 11) and Saturday
(March 12). As part of the appeal, the Voice of Ukraine will also be undertaking a bucket collection at tonight’s game and as a club we have pledged to match donations made up to a value of £1,000. All funds raised by Voice of Ukraine will also be donated to the Disasters Emergency Committee. We have also teamed up w i t h o u r Swa n s e a C i t y A F C Foundation, O spreys in the Community, Carolyn Harris MP and Morrisons, to ensure that those in need in our community do not miss out this Easter. T h e ‘ E ve r yo n e D e s e r ve s a n Easter’ campaign follows on from the very successful ‘Everyone Deserves a Christmas’ campaign where nearly 2,000 Christmas h a m p e r s we r e c r e at e d a n d distributed to families in need over the festive season. Easter eggs can be brought in person to the stadium between 21-26 March, where they will be distributed to the football and rugby camps running throughout Easter week. Additionally, families in need will be receiving an Easter
Sunday lunch hamper, which is being supplied by Morrisons. We are thrilled to be part of such a great initiative which will help so many in our community. The club is also proud to be supporting Level Playing Field’s ‘ Weeks of Action’ campaign, which aims to showcase the good work being done by clubs and organisations to improve accessibility and inclusion across all sports. This year ’s theme celebrates the return of fans to stadiums, and we would like to thank our Disabled Supporters Association (DSA) for their tireless work and efforts in making football at the Swans accessible to all. Finally, I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the management, players, staff and directors from Fulham who have made the trip to Wales for today’s game. Enjoy the game, Julian

ood evening and welcome back to the Swansea.com Stadium for our Championship game against Fulham. It’s only three days since we were last in action here as we entertained Coventry and made it back-to-back league wins and three home victories on the bounce. I was really pleased with the result and loved our first half performance, but I didn’t really love how we played in the second half. We have a fairly young team who haven’t been in the position of being 3-0 up very often and we didn’t manage the game well enough in the second period. I have said before that I don’t get too emotional about results. I get emotional about performances because performing well and performing consistently will get you the results in the end. We have to do better than we did in the second half on Saturday, but having said that I was
extremely proud of the way we played in the first 45 minutes. To play the way we play takes huge courage and huge attention to detail. The players looked after each other and the ball in the first half and the intensity to win the ball back was excellent – we limited Coventry to one shot and that was from our mistake. Our first goal was an excellent ex ample of ball speed, one touch play and the intensity that we know we can produce on a regular basis, and Pato took it superbly to give us the platform to go on and control the game how we wanted in that opening period. Our second goal was probably one that appeared more direct to some, but it certainly wasn’t. The pass from Fish to start the move was unbelievable, he showed massive courage to pick out Flynn and his body movement on the turn was excellent, which allowed him spac e to drive forward and pick out Michael who finished brilliantly.
I’m really pleased for Michael because he’s finding some form now after a difficult start with us but he’s working hard and getting the rewards. The second half was a bit messy for us, and we didn’t have anywhere near as much control as I’d like but back-to-back wins shows the hard work the guys are putting in. Tonight’s visitors Fulham are enjoying a fantastic season under Marco Silva and more than deserve their place at the top of the table. Even though we lost the reverse fixture at Craven Cottage, I thought our performance that night was great and we showed the team we want to be by dominating possession, creating chances and playing with massive courage and connection. Your support here on Saturday was incredible once again and hopefully we can produce another performance for you to be proud of Enjoy the game, Russell

ood evening and welcome to everyone joining us from around the world for this evening’s Championship fixture against Fulham at the Swansea.com Stadium. We go into the game off the back of a brilliant result against Coventry City at the weekend. It was a really pleasing result and we were delighted with our first half performance. We know we could have been better in the second half but we managed to get a third goal and did enough to get the three points. To get back-to-back win was huge for us, and it was great to do that against a strong
side who have been doing well this season. We took a lot of confidence into the game following Monday ’s win over West Brom at The Hawthorns.
The challenge for us now is to maintain the levels from our first-half performance and use that as a springboard going forward to continue the run.
It was a different experience for Korey playing left wingback and he did brilliantly. He showed his versatility and played an important role setting up the opening goal.
It will be a tough test this evening against top-of-the-table Fulham but we will go into the game with confidence and will look to impose our game.
Scoring three goals shows the c onfidenc e in the te am and we were all delighted for Michael getting two goals and an assist. He got himself into really good positions and his speed adds another dimension to the team.
We will look to use the home advantage as best as we can and will aim to put in another good performance in front of the Jack Army. Enjoy the game today! Matt

SWANS TRUST T
o celebrate International Women’s Day we thought that it would be great for some of our female members and supporters to introduce themselves to you - Sian Davies (Swansea City Supporters’ Trust (SCST), Cath Dyer (Swansea City Disabled Supporters Association (DSA) and Amy Clement (Her Game Too). Sian to kick off: My family have supported the Swans for five generations. One of my earliest memories is being at the Vetch on a winter’s night with a few hundred other fans watching Swansea schoolboys. When I retired from a career in education and being a Welsh speaker, having learnt Welsh in my early 20s, I wanted to bec ome more involved with the Swans and give something back to the club that is, and has been, such a large part of my life. I’d been a member of the Supporters’ Trust for many years and was lucky enough t o b e e l e c t e d t o t h e Tr u s t Board; this is my second term as a B o ard member. I have a number of roles within the Board including responsibility for the membership database. For many years the number of women members of the Trust
has, sadly, been very low and one of my priorities going forward is to try to remedy this. If, as female fans, you’d like your voice to be heard, join the Trust at www.swanstrust.co.uk/jointhe-trust and if you’d like to be involved in initiatives to increase the number of women Trust members please email me at info@swanstrust.co.uk or come and speak to me at the Trust Pod outside the stadium before home games. Over to you Cath: A Swans supporter since 1981, enjoying glory days at the Vetch, and mingling with players during discos in Harpers. I met my husband in Barclays, a fellow Swan, we have three children, two of which are disabled. We moved to Llandrindod Wells but still made the journey to the Liberty. Being bilingual and musical, I led a Cylch Meithrin, and became a teaching assistant in English and Welsh schools, playing the piano for the school in the Urdd Eisteddfod. Following a move back to Swansea in 2010, I joined the Trust so that I could give something back to the club that had supported our disabled daughter's journey, and joined the Travel Plan committee, Awards night
committee and undertook Welsh and English interviews. I was fully involved in setting up the DSA (www.swansdsa.org.uk) with Ian James. We aim to ensure everyone has their best matchday experience, is included and that we are there for them. And finally, Amy: H e r G a m e To o ( www. hergametoo.co.uk) was founded by myself and 11 other girls in May 2021. We are all passionate football fans who have experienced sexism whilst talking about, attending, working in or playing football. Our research found that sexism in football spreads much more widely and deeper than we had originally thought and our initial campaign video certainly supported this, receiving over one million views in 24 hours. We want women to feel safe and welcome in the football world. We want to raise awareness, educate, inspire and make a change. We urge female fans to get involved with their football trusts and communities so our voices can be heard. Join the Swans Trust, ladies!

wansea City AFC Foundation has given over 250 free books and 50 WHSmith vouchers to six primary schools in the local area to celebrate World Book Day (Thursday, March 3). The initiative aims to support young readers as part of an exciting partnership between Premier League Primary Stars and the National Literacy Trust. The partnership has enabled 27,000 free books to be distributed to schools across E n g l a n d a n d Wa l e s v i a 8 1 community organisations affiliated to professional football clubs, all of whom deliver the Premier League Primary Stars education programme. National Literacy Trust research found that children who own their own books are nearly three times more likely to enjoy reading. Lockdowns have made it difficult for children to access physical books because of school and public library closures, so getting copies of books into the hands of children is more vital than ever. Since the launch of the Premier League Primary Stars education programme in 2016, the Premier League has distributed 152,000 free books to schoolchildren.
Curtis Grant, education manager at Swansea City AFC Foundation said: “ World Book Day is an event we have always been passionate about celebrating at the Swansea City AFC Foundation. By combining the appeal of our professional club with our strong presence of positive role models throughout our partner schools, we feel we can make a huge impact to pupils’ attitudes towards reading. “On Premier League Primary Stars, we have teamed up with the National Literacy Trust for a n u m b e r of ye a r s a n d t h e partnership really supports our aim of developing pupils' love of reading through sport. "This year, they have provided us with over 250 free books to share with schools and pupils that may be less fortunate and not own so many exciting books. The scheme has gone down as a massive success again.” Swansea City club ambassador Lee Trundle joined the Foundation in delivering the free books and vouchers on World Book Day to local schools.
Trundle, who published his own autobiography in 2010, spoke to the Primary Stars participants about the importance of reading, as well as taking time to sign the books they received on the day. Jim Sells, sport and literacy programme manager at the National Literacy Trust added: “ World Book Day celebrates the power and joy of reading. We know that children who have books at home do better in school, so we are delighted to be able to distribute such an incredible number of books and vouchers to schools across the country, with the help of the community organisations at 81 brilliant football clubs. "For this year’s World Book Day, we are challenging as many pupils as possible to join their local library, gaining a lifelong access to books and reading for free! I’d like to thank our partners at World Book Day, WHSmith and Walker Books for making this possible." The Portuguese is back in football having taken a break following his departure from Everton in December of 2019.
A defender during his playing days, the now 44-year-old started his managerial career by guiding second-tier Estoril to the title and a top-flight return after a seven-year absensce. Stints with Sporting Lisbon - where he won the Portuguese Cup - and Olympiacos - where the league title was secured - followed before he made the move to English football with Hull in January 2017.
Their impressive home form nearly saw him guide the Tigers to safety, but they were relegated and he departed to take over at Watford.
MARCO SILVA
He made a fine start to life at Vicarage Road before an alarming loss of form saw him depart and he subsequently joined Everton in the summer of 2018.
After a long spell on the sidelines with a knee injury, midfielder Cairney’s recent return to action has bolstered an already-strong Fulham squad.
The 31-year-old came through the ranks at Hull before making a move to Blackburn in 2013.

HOW’S THEIR FORM?
L ondon’s oldest club, Fulham spent 13 consecutive seasons in the Premier League from 2001 until 2014, which saw them become an established top-flight team. Fulham’s form has been excellent. The Cottagers are flying high at the top of the table and have won eight of their last 10 Championship fixtures. There’s been no shortage of goals in that sequence, with seven coming at Reading before hitting six against Bristol City and Birmingham. They have not lost away from home in the league since a 4-1 loss to Coventry back in October.
Under the guidance of Roy Hodgson, they reached their highest-ever league placing of seventh during the 2008-09 season, and reached the Europa League final in 2010 only to be defeated 2-1 by Atletico Madrid in Hamburg. A turbulent campaign saw Fulham relegated at the end of the 2013-14 season; and their two returns to the top-flight since have ended in immediate relegation with them now once again back in the Championship.

The 34-year-old has been with Fulham since 2015 and he has made over 200 appearances since; marking himself out as a key part of their promotion campaigns in 2018 and 2020. He started his career in his homeland with Chicago Fire and New York Red Bulls, before joining Bolton in 2012. He would spend three years with the Trotters during a difficult period for the club following their relegation from the top-flight. He made a big impression, winning the club’s Player of the Year award in 2014 and 2015 and making 126 appearances in total. He has nine goals and 12 assists at the time of writing and has quickly established himself as a key player at Craven Cottage. Whilst highly rated at Liverpool, he made just two first-team appearances across a stint at Anfield that also took in loan spells with Crewe, Hull, Derby, Bournemouth and Cardiff. He first came to prominence in 2013 when he became Wales’ youngest player aged just 16 years and 207 days, appearing as a substitute in a World Cup qualifier in Belgium. His club career took off during an excellent season at Derby as Frank Lampard’s side reached the play-off final. he powerful striker is enjoying another sensational season in the second tier, with 34 goals – a new Championship record for a single campaign - already under his belt at the time of writing. Mitrovic started his career in his homeland with Partizan Belgrade, before a successful stint with Anderlecht attracted the interest of Newcastle United in the summer of 2015. The Magpies were relegated in his first season and, although he helped them return to the top-fight, it was a fine loan stint at Fulham which revived his career. He has twice helped fire them to promotion since and has a remarkable record of 64 goals in 103 Championship appearances. CONFIDENCE THE KEY TO COVENTRY WIN SAYS PATO

a mie Paterson claimed that Swansea City’s win against West Brom gave them the confidence to follow it up with another victory at home to Coventry.
Coventry pulled one back in the closing stages, however the Swans’ work earlier on in the game was enough to secure a third home victory on the bounce.
Russell Martin’s men made it backto-back league wins and three home successes on the bounce with victory over the Sky Blues.
And Paterson believed the win over West Brom was the catalyst for a second successive win.
Paterson opened the scoring in the 12th minute, finishing superbly with a fine left-foot shot after wonderful build-up play. The home side doubled their lead in the first half as Michael Obafemi grabbed his first of the afternoon, before the former Southampton man grabbed his second with another cool finish just after the interval.
“You could see that (the win over West Brom gave the team confidence),” he said. “We started with a lot of confidence and this league is about trying to put a run together, then you never know where it can take you. “It is just about results, winning games, and the performances.
in the end, we probably wanted to play better in the second half. “We went 3-0 up early in the game but we were a bit disappointed with the second half, we played well in the first half so we just want to maintain that now. “If you want to be successful your home form must be tip top. With the fans getting behind us, it makes a big difference. We need to make home a fortress and the last three here we have played really well so we need to carry that on.”
“We scored three goals today, and it is a good sign that the strikers are confident. It was comfortable

oday is International Women’s Day – and what better day to pay tribute to some of the women who have played key roles in football over the decades, particularly here at Swansea City. We’ll be featuring some of them on our website over the next few days, from club secretary to the wives of players and probably the most famous ‘ tea lady’ Swansea will ever know. In a recent survey for the English Football League ahead of IWD, 91% of female fans said nothing could beat the live football matchday experience and 61% of them said football was about more than just winning, it was about feeling a sense of belonging to their town/city’s football club. We have a successful women’s team which formed in 2002 and it has spent the last two decades making a positive imp ac t in t erms of le ague and c up success, as well as providing players for the national side. Swans e a C ity L adie s' fir st signing, Gorseinon-born Natalie Ashford, went on to become a Welsh international and represented her club side in the Champions L eague twice, once in Slovenia and then in Cyprus. “It was a great club to play for because there was a good set up in terms of the social side of things,” she said. “Ian Owen was the manager for much of my time and we trained more and harder than most of the clubs in our league and we reaped the benefit s of that because of things like the Champions League.” L a s t y e a r, U E FA l a u n c h e d a public awareness campaign to highlight women making gamechanging contributions to the development of football.
It was keen to highlight the ‘outstanding wo r k o f s o m e o f t h e e x t r a o r d i n a r y women in football’ – both on and off the pitch. Yo u m a y b e f o r g i v e n f o r t h i n k i n g that the rise in popularity of women p l ay i n g fo ot b a l l h a s b e e n a re c e nt phenomenon, but that is not the case. Wo m e n s t a r t e d p l a y i n g f o o t b a l l i n Wales as far back as the time of the First World War. After the men went to war, thousands of women entered the workforce, many in munitions factories making ar tiller y shells and tho s e fac t orie s produced women’s football teams and their games drew crowds in their tens of thousands. The teams played charitable matches to raise funds for local hospitals and for war memorials and one of the most successful teams in Wales at that time came from Swansea. It was formed by women workers from the National Shell Factory (formerly Baldwins) in Landore, Swansea and the side was unbeaten champions between 1917 and 1919 and won three silver cups for their efforts. The game has grown since then, de spite women being b anned from playing football between 1921 and 1971 - five decades when football was deemed ‘quite unsuitable for females’, according to the Football Association. But it isn’t just on the pitch that women play a significant role in football. Wives, mothers, sisters, partners and women doing the jobs they do in football clubs from chief executives to physios to caterers all have an impact. Today we celebrate all of them.

BEN CABANGO HAS BEEN A MAN IN FORM FOR SWANSEA CITY IN RECENT WEEKS, AND IS BEING BACKED TO BE AN IMPORTANT FIGURE IN WALES’ UPCOMING WORLD CUP PLAY-OFFS. HERE THE DEFENDER TALKS ABOUT HIS ADJUSTMENT TO A NEW STYLE OF PLAY, STRIVING FOR CONSISTENCY AND HOW SPORTING SUCCESS IS RUNNING IN THE FAMILY. CONTINUES ON NEXT PAGE....
Ben, you had to be patient for opportunities at the start of the season, but you’ve been in really good form since Christmas, how have you dealt with it? Yeah, it was a tough start – I was in and out of the team but I feel like I’ve stuck with it, been working hard on the training ground and I think that’s shown over the past few games. The important thing now is consistency, which I wasn’t doing at the start of the season. I’m focusing on being consistent because then you can get the result to match the performance. It’s inevitable when there’s a transition that there will be good spells and tough spells. The home form has been good but the away form not so good. Is it just about getting those things to link together? Yeah, and obviously, there’s been a change of style as well. It’s taken a while to adapt, but it’s a process and a journey so we’ve got to stick with it, keep working hard and make sure we fix the problems we’ve had. And how have you found the change of style? Swansea have always been known for playing passing football but this is a variation on that and it is very different. How big an adjustment has it been? It has been a big adjustment for me. We have always played football but this is another level so it’s been different but I’ve really enjoyed it. I’m just trying to improve every day on those aspects especially playing out of the back which has been one of the main things. I’m striving to get there so I can keep myself in the team and keep playing well. When you came back in the summer and the coaching staff set out their ideas of what they
wanted to do and how they wanted to play, what was that like? It was a lot. When we were watching some of the clips of how they wanted to play, we were taken aback and it did seem a bit crazy but there was time to prepare and we bought into it and you can see that by the way we play. We’ve just got to make sure we cut out some of the sloppy stuff we do and stay on top of everything because when it does pay off, we can dominate teams. For example, I remember the Huddersfield Town game when we were on top and there are games like that where it’s really enjoyable, but obviously in games like Sheffield United, we really need to improve. Consistency will come with time, we just have to stick with the process. It’s a tough run of games coming up, but we’ve actually had a quite a good record against some of the top teams so there’s nothing to fear is there? As a group, we feel like we can beat anyone including the top teams so, like you said, there’s nothing to fear. We go into these games with excitement. I know the Sheffield United game didn’t go as planned, but we’ve put that behind us now and I’m sure in the next games we will put in a good performance as a team. It felt like we had nearly a month off over November and December but since we’ve come back it’s been Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday – has that been quite hard? Obviously at the start of the season, I wasn’t really involved but since I’ve come back it has been a demanding schedule and it’s a very demanding way that we play as well. Taking all of that into account, it has been very hard but I’m sure we’ll pull through and do well.
PAGE 33
You’ve said it’s a hard way to play physically, is that something that you’re seeing when you look at your stats? I know that as centrehalves your number of sharp sprints in games is up massively from last season. Yeah, it’s not really the distance we’re covering, it’s more about the intensity and the volume of work with the sprints and the running. It’s a big change from last season but I feel like I’m beginning to adapt to it now and push on. That month over Christmas and New Year, it was so odd because it’s usually such a busy time and you’ve had weeks without a game, that must have been so surreal as a player? There can’t have been many of you training at some points? At one point I think there were about eight of us training and then obviously I had COVID as well. I’ve had a lot of ups and downs but I’m starting to find my feet now and push on. We’ve got a third of the season left so I just want to do as well as possible and hopefully stay available. I just want to go back to last summer, Ben, when you had the play-off final and you were picked for the Wales squad for the Euros. They were two great things to be involved in but I suppose there’s disappointment there as you lost the play-off final and didn’t really get to play at the tournament, how did you feel coming back here after that? With the Wales squad, I’m only 21 so I’ve got plenty of time. Going away in the summer was a really good experience for me and I feel like if I carry on working hard and keep my head down then I can play well and there will be opportunities. I did play in the play-off final which was a big disappointment but I know now
PAGE 34
what I need to do in that situation when it comes up again. My focus now is just to play as many games as possible and as consistently as possible. In the back of my mind, playing for Wales is always going to be there, but my focus is on training, playing, recovering well and playing again because you’ve just got to take every game and every day as it comes. So even with the World Cup playoffs coming up which potentially lead to the tournament at the end of the year, you’re able to blank that out and take it a day at a time? Yeah, you know that it’s a possibility but you’ve just got to concentrate on each day as it comes and focus on what you need to do. I need to make sure that I’m right for every game and consistency is the biggest thing for me now. I want to play every game, do well and win and that will put me in a position to be involved in the games that I want to play in, like the Euros or play-off finals. Obviously the World Cup qualifiers are next and I want to be playing in those games. What is the biggest thing you’ve taken from the last 12 months, Ben? I don’t really want to bring it up but you suffered the racial abuse which is a really hard thing for anyone to go through, then you played in a play-off final, you went with Wales to the Euros, and there’s been a big change of style here at Swansea, that’s a lot of things that have happened. How is Ben Cabango different now to how he was 12-months ago? The thing that has changed is my mentality really. You always try to plan for the future or have an idea of when things will happen so this thing will be in one month, this thing will be in two months. But, you really can’t plan like that because there’s so much
change. You just have to take every day as it comes in football and expect the unexpected. I have to make sure I’m right for every game or opportunity that comes and not worry about how much change there actually is. Before the start of the season, I was in such a different position to the one that I’m in now. For instance, I didn’t think the manager was going to leave, but he did and now we’re playing a different style and I’ve adapted and I’m finally show what I can do. So yeah, it’s been a weird 12 months but I’ve enjoyed it and now I’m just looking forward to what comes next. Before we started this interview, I had a look at the team that played in the play-off final and I think you were one of four from the XI that are still here. I’ve been trying to work out how many centre half partners you’ve played with in your 90 games and it’s a lot. Yeah, yeah. It’s crazy how much stuff has changed but you just have to work and adapt with it and go with the flow. I just go with the flow now, honestly. I wanted to ask you about Kyle Naughton as well because he’s been here a long time, is a key figure and he’s having a great season, what is he like to play with and what’s he like as a character in the dressing room? On and off the pitch, he’s the same. He’s so good to play next to because he’s so reliable. People don’t understand how good a footballer he is. He’s calm and collected, he always does the right things and off the pitch. He’s such a good guy and he’s funny as well. I feel like this season, people are starting to see how good he is because that middle centre back position is a tough role and he does it so well. He’s a big miss right now, and as soon as he gets back, that will be great.
CONTINUES ON NEXT PAGE....
It’s almost like he can play anywhere, isn’t it? He’s played wingback, centre back, full-back, he even played in midfield when Graham Potter was manager. He’s so technically gifted. Honestly, he’s one of the most technically gifted footballers I’ve played with. I think it’s just his calmness really, there could be five players around him but he’ll still find the time to get out of it, it’s crazy. He’s a wicked player. Finally, I’ll just ask about your brother {Cardiff Rugby player Theo Cabango} because he’s having a bit of a breakthrough season of his own at the moment, mum and dad must be busy trying to get back and forth to watch you both? Yeah, it’s busy at the moment. He’s doing well which is great to see because, like myself, he’s been working really hard to get to this stage. For him to get the opportunities he’s getting is great. My parents are buzzing, they’re splitting their time between our games but it’s been wicked and I hope he gets more opportunities. Do you get the chance to watch him much because I know sometimes they’ll play on a Friday night or a Sunday? He’s come down to watch me a few times and vice versa. It’s hard when we’re both playing on a Saturday but like you said, sometimes he’ll play on a Friday or a Sunday and then I’ll go down to watch. I don’t want to jinx it, but there’s a football world cup this year and a rugby world cup next year, what are the odds that a couple of Cabango brothers pull on a Wales kit? That would be wicked but we’re only young so there’s plenty of time. We’ve just got to keep working hard and we’ll see what the future brings.

ABERYSTWYTH TOWN WOMEN 2
SWANS LADIES 5
S
wansea City Ladies concluded phase one of the Genero Adran Premier with a convincing win over Port Talbot Town Ladies at Llandarcy. Nia Rees opened the scoring on the half hour mark after coming off the bench. The Swans were clinical in the second half and put Port Talbot to the sword with Katy Hosford (2), Stacey JohnDavis and Karmyn Carter (2) all getting on the scoresheet. In the early stages, Hosford forced a quick reaction save from former Swan Emily Roberts with a strike from inside the box. Hosford then saw her shot denied by the post as she pulled the trigger from outside the box after Laura Davies picked the winger out with a precise through ball.
Swansea was fully in control of proceedings and were nearly given a gift of a goal as Roberts mishit her goal kick, Chloe Chivers picked it up but could only drag her shot wide of the mark. The Swans were denied by the woodwork again when John-Davis saw her effort hit the far post. All the pressure was eventually converted into a goal by Rees with a fine first-time finish, hitting the post on the way in. At the start of the second half another scuffed goal kick from Roberts went straight to Chivers, she played the ball through to John-Davis, but the winger could only fire wide of the far post. The lead was doubled after Chivers drilled a cross into Hosford which she buried it into the top corner.
Straight after, Hosford claimed for a penalty but John-Davis played on and poked the ball home to increase the lead. Carter made it a night to remember as she got on the end of Hosford’s corner to secure her first goal for Swansea. Chivers then played an outrageous pass to Hosford taking every Port Talbot player out of the picture, which was then finished by the winger who took the ball around the goalkeeper and calmly rolled the ball into an empty net. Carter further asserted Swansea’s authority with her second goal of the night as Hosford was picked out by Lake at the back post and nodded it back to the American for her to finish it.
Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.

COREY HURFORD RELISHING DIFFERENT ROLE
C
orey Hurford relished the chance to flourish in a new position after scoring a goal and setting up the other two as Swansea City Under-18s defeated their Ipswich counterparts 3-1.
“I’m buzzing with everything, I t h i n k a l l t h e b oys p u t i n a shift and I think that we all worked really well as a team," said Hurford, who joined the Swans from Briton Ferry in January.
“It ’s really important for me to be versatile. I’ve played as a 10 before, just behind the striker, it ’s different but it’s good for me to develop and potentially offer myself as a striker in the future if needed.
Hurford, who usually plays as a right wing back for the Swans, filled in at striker for the absent Iwan Morgan and Geoff Bony against the Tractor Boys.
“ W e’ v e d o n e r e a l l y w e l l t o come away with a 3-1 win, obviously Ipswich are a really good team being second in the league. I thought we played really well and deserved the result.
“It ’s been a really good run l a t e l y, I t h o u g h t w e w e r e unlucky to not come away with at least a point against Charlton, we had loads of chances, but to bounce back from that and get a win shows the mentality we have.
He made a considerable impact as he opened the scoring before providing assists for Filip Lissah and Dan Watts. The 17-year-old was delighted that the Swans could continue their excellent form in 2022, and hopes he can learn and develop after enjoying his outing up top.
“Playing up front is a little bit different for me, I haven’t played there at all so far this s e a s o n s o i t i s n e w, b u t I gave it my best shot and it seems like I’ ve done alright.
“ The boys have put in a heck of a s h i ft l at e l y, t h ey ’ ve a l l been working really hard both in training and in games and it’s all paying off."

wansea City under -18s earned a much deserved three points away at Millwall under-18s to climb above the Lions in the Professional Development League.
Corey Hurford continued his rich vein of form, winning the ball on the flank before breaking into the box and calmly finishing to give the Swans the lead, his third goal for the club since joining in January.
Goals from in-form forwards Corey Hurford and Iwan Morgan put the Swans two goals ahead. Sashiel Adom-Malaki’s late flick would prove a consolation as the Swans made it back-to-back wins in the league.
Swansea came close again just before the break, Edwards’ splitting pass finding Lissah in the box, the full back pulled the ball across the box to Zane Myers, but a Millwall toe managed to poke it behind for a corner.
The Swans came out of the blocks quickly wiithin the opening 10 minutes, with fantastic balls forward from Josh Edwards and Ryan Bassett creating early chances. The pick of the chances fell to Filip Lissah who forced a good save from Ryan Hammond after just eight minutes.
Hurford almost got his second of the afternoon after the break, cutting in with a brilliant piece of skill before his low effort was pushed behind for a corner.
But Millwall would have chances of their own in a game that became scrappy, Tom Leahy heading just over from a corner at close range.
Millwall had a strong start to the second half, with chances falling to Roman Esse and Leahy. But the Swans would regain control of the game, Morgan seemingly sealing the game as he rounded the goalkeeper and tapped home with six minutes to go.
Millwall found a goal in the third minute of added time, AdomMalaki’s flick from a set piece finding the back of the net. The win sees Swansea leapfrog Millwall in the Professional Development League table, having suffered just one defeat all year to league leaders Charlton Athletic.
TEAM LINEUP Swans: Tyler Evans, Filip Lissah, Ryan Bassett, Kai Ludvigsen, Jada Mawongo, Josh Edwards, Josh Carey, Kyrell Wilson (Dan Watts 59), Iwan Morgan, Corey Hurford (Ruben Davies 79), Zane Myers (Aaron Hillier 75). Subs not used: Ewan Griffiths, Richard Faakye.

hatever their views on the UK’s honours system, I think all Swans fans would have been delighted to see Alan Curtis receive his MBE on the day we were due to play Bournemouth.
JACK THE LAD
Curtis' honour was originally announced at the start of 2021, but was finally presented by the Duke of Cambridge at Windsor Castle last month. There has been huge debate over the years surrounding the suitability of many recipients under the honours system and regarding the system itself. That is an argument for another time and another place. Suffice to say, Curtis is exactly the kind of person who should be recognised for his service to Welsh football. There can be no debate over the fact the Swans legend is deserving of any honour or recognition that comes his way. If I had my way he'd be the permanent L ord Mayor of Swansea and I would commission a statue of him to be erected outside the Swansea.Com Stadium! Be it on the pitch or off it, Curtis has pretty much been a constant at Swansea City for half a century since joining the club as a schoolboy in 1971. Granted, there was a period of broken service when he was lured away by Leeds and subsequently Southampton, but he was soon back banging in the goals at the Vetch. And, of course, there was a period later in his career when Curt donned the blue of Cardiff City. But despite that relatively brief spell, the 67-year-old is still considered by many to be Mr Swansea City. It’s well documented that Curtis has occupied just about every role there is to be filled on the Swans staff.
PAGE 52
From player to manager and pretty much everything else in between. Curtis has done it all. But even after all his service over the years and many of his greatest achievements having come off the pitch in more recent seasons, my fondest memories of Curtis will always be as a player. I sometimes worry that when his enormous Swansea City legacy is assessed, there are so many people who simply won’t remember just how good a player he was. I'd guess that the majority of today's Swans fans would never have had the pleasure of seeing Curtis play live in his prime. I suppose that is one of the drawbacks of footballing figures who go on to enjoy continued success in the game, long after they have hung up their boots. Players of Curtis’ generation and before also suffer from the fact that football coverage was far less extensive back in his day than it is now. And, of course, much of his early playing days took place in the lower divisions as his career started when the Swans were very much rock bottom of the Football League and coincided with their rise up the divisions. As soon as Curtis pulled on the white shirt for the first time, it was pretty o bv i o u s t h e S w a n s h a d s o m e t h i n g special on their hands. The Rhondda product had already established himself as one of the Swans rising local heroes alongside the likes of Robbie James and Jeremy Charles by the time I first saw him play when I was 11 years old. It was a low-key Fourth Division match against Bournemouth in the 1977/78 season – his most prolific goal-scoring campaign, when he netted 32 times in 39 league matches, helping fire the Swans to promotion.
However, it wasn’ t just the number of goals that made him a favourite, but the style and flair with which he played. He had wonderful close control which allowed him to dribble past players, but also used his body to feint and swerve past opponents – a drop of shoulder here, a sidestep there, and he was gone. Unfortunately youngsters won't find any HD footage from the Seventies of Curtis banging in the goals in the old Fourth Division! You'll be lucky to find a few grainy highlights which hardly do justice to his immense all round skill. Of course, as the Swans rose up the divisions there was more chance of Curtis being caught weaving his magic on film. The goal against Leeds United on the first day of the 198182 season is iconic and was thankfully preserved on film forever thanks to the match being featured on Match of the Day. B ut even during that debut First Division season, there are stunning strikes from the Curtis repertoire that seem to have been lost forever. T he sec ond goal in the 2-0 win against Liverpool was an
absolutely cracker, as was his winner against Southampton at the Vetch. Another strike that only seems to live on in the memory banks of old fogeys like me is the stunner he scored in the 3-2 win against Ipswich at Portman Road. Despite my rapidly fading memory, I can still see him curling an inch-perfect first time shot into the corner of the home net. I r o n i c a l l y, o n e o f h i s g r e at goals which has survived on tape was an absolute belter he scored for Cardiff City. Now there's not many times I will recommend watching a Cardiff goal - in fact this is the only time but this one is well worth a watch if you haven't seen it. Like so many of his stunning strikes, it was scored at the Vetch – in a Welsh Cup final against Wrexham. Receiving the ball near halfway with nothing seemingly on, just like the best kid in the playground, he kept the ball at his feet, evading Wrexham challenges before unleashing a 25-yard left foot shot into the top right-hand corner at the Double Decker end - just like the Leeds goal.
And he didn't just score crackers against Leeds, during h i s t i m e at E l l a n d R o a d h e won Match of the Day ’s Goal of the Month competition with a b r i l l i a n t i n d i v i d u a l e ffo r t against Southampton. And, of course, he also represented his beloved Wales 35 times as well as his achievements in the club game. As you've probably guessed by now, Curtis was the footballing hero of my schooldays. And despite all of the wonderful players I have seen don the famous white shirt since, he will always be my all-time favourite Swans player. Just as supporters who grew up watching the likes of Lee Trundle, Michu, Leon Britton or Wilfried Bony, will always have a soft spot for those superb players. But for me, Curt will always have the edge and I will always be happy t o t ell tho s e who never saw him play just how good he was. Congratulations, Alan Curtis MBE. C’mon you Swans!

here are few people more significant to players at a football club than the club secretary and in 2000 few of the people holding that position in the English Football League were women. In April that year when Jackie Rockey took over the role at Swansea City she was in the minority, although she never saw herself as a trailblazer. Her job was vast, from signing players and making sure all the associated paperwork was in order, to booking transport and accommodation to and from games and being a listening ear when needed. I n p ra c t i c e, i t i n vo l ve d long, unsociable hours and a life lived around an ever-changing fixture list, but as a woman, she believes she brought something different. “It ’s about caring and showing that you care, that’s the difference I hope I made. A lot of players used to come to me and talk to me when they didn’t feel able to talk to the coaches. “I think as a woman in that role I did the job differently and especially when it c ame to the younger player s, my maternal instinct was to look after them and sometimes that involved going over and above my job description.” It’s fair to say that the JD was pretty fluid and all-encompassing during her early years with the Swans, but r e g a r d l e s s of w h at wa s w r i tt e n o n paper, the focus was making sure the new players especially settled in. “ We were at the Vetch Field when I started and we were physically ‘out of the way’ as far as a lot of players were c onc erned and they felt a long way from home because they were. “ There weren’t agents arranging for them to be driven down to the club or
organising accommodation or for their belongings to be delivered to them like there are today. “Some of them were teenagers who had to drive to a place they’d never been to before on their own and they were just expected to show up for work and get on with it. “Having a son of my own I know how difficult that would be for some of them and for their mothers waiting by the phone hoping they’d arrived safely and got everything they needed.” There were plenty of tricky situations during her 19 years at the club, one of the recurring and sometimes emotionally challenging being sending players out on loan. “A lot of the players weren’t happy and I used to feel so sorry, especially for some of the younger boys. They ’d be expected to drive on their own and get to a strange place," she said. “It was quite traumatic, especially for the younger players, and then when they’d get there they didn’t know anybody and they’d be put in not so nice digs and sharing with people they didn’t know. “My last words to them were always, ‘please ring me when you get there’. I suppose it ’s the mothers’ instinct coming out in you.” In a tenure that saw hundreds of signatures gathered, there were a few players who stood out because they too went above and beyond when the club secretary found herself in need of support. “Nick Cusack was a big help, very steady and someone I could always turn to for help and players like Lee Trundle, Andy Robinson and Ferrie Bodde. He was my ‘adopted son’ and he still calls me ‘mum’. “And Roberto Martinez, both as a player and a manager and Adrian Forbes as well. I’m sure I’ve left people out as well. There were just so many.”
While there were many good times, there were dark days when financial turmoil meant players and other members of staff weren’t paid and when the future of the club hung in the balance. But the darkest days c ame with the sudden death of Besian Idrizaj aged just 22. “ That was extremely hard for me. Besian’s great friend at the club was Shefki Kuqi. They were very close and because Shefki was older they had more of a father-
son relationship. Shefki was absolutely devastated. He used to come in my office and sob and I’d cry. We all felt it because it was so tragic. “Shefki was in touch with Besian’s parents and brother and he went out to the funeral and organised everything, the flowers, he did everything. He was amazing and I’m not sure he ever had the recognition for what he did. But that was a very difficult time, a very difficult time.” Three years after leaving the club there has been time to reflect on
almost twenty years of service and interactions with players at all stages of their careers. Some have c ome and gone, many remain friends but Swansea City and the players and managers she worked with will always have a very special place in her heart. “I knew I was doing an important job but I don’t think I realised how important my job was. “I have the fondest of memories, I am so glad I did what I did. I wouldn’ t have change d it for the world.”
