I’d also like to thank the 1,600-strong contingent of the Jack Army that travelled to St Andrew’s last Saturday.

We come into this fixture on the back of a defeat but, as we all know in football, there is a chance to bounce back quickly – especially in the Championship with the hectic fixture schedule.

Our support, both here at the Swansea.com Stadium and on the road, is nothing short of outstanding and I know that the players, Russell, and his s t aff c o n t i n u e t o b e b l ow n away by the backing that you give the team.

ood afternoon and welcome back to the Swansea.com Stadium for today ’s game against Peterborough United.

The defeat at Birmingham came on the back of excellent wins against Cardiff and West Brom in the space of four days – two wins that I know our supporters really enjoyed. Despite last Saturday’s setback, it was great to see Michael Obafemi get off the mark with his first goal for the club. Michael has had some injury problems since he arrived and Russell and his staff have been managing him back to fitness, but he took his goal really well and we hope that will be the first of many in Swansea colours.

Today ’s game is our chosen home fixture for the Remembrance period, with the month of November almost upon us. We will pay tribute to the fallen who sacrificed so much in conflict, with a minute’s silence prior to kick-off as clubs up and d ow n t h e c o u n t r y p ay t h e i r respects. Both sets of players will bear a poppy on their shirts for today ’s game, while the match-worn shirts will be made available to purchase

in a live auction straight from kick-off, with proceeds going to the Royal British L egion.

The month of October marked Black History Month and it was great to see former Swansea City star Nathan Dyer join the Swansea City AFC Foundation for their Black History Month Workshop during half-term. Nathan joined the session to discuss his experiences of racism and share what he believes can be done to tackle the issue, which we as a club feel extremely passionate about in terms of exercising change and making a difference. Finally, I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the management, players, st aff and directors from Peterborough who have made the trip to Wales for this afternoon’s game. Enjoy the game, Julian

ood afternoon and welcome to the Swansea.com Stadium for our Championship game with Peterborough United. It’s great to be back on home soil, and I’m sure you all enjoyed the performances and results in our recent matches here against Cardiff City and West Brom. The atmosphere you created in those games w a s i n c r e d i b l e, a n d I m u s t thank you for your following at Birmingham City last weekend. Over 1,600 of you made the trip, which is unbelievable. Even though we couldn’t get the result we wanted, hearing your backing during the match and even after the final whistle really shows just how much you recognise the effort these lads put in. After the two wins here, the trip to Birmingham – our third game in six days – proved just too much

as we couldn’t quite match our intensity, which is understandable given the schedule. Despite that , it was great to see Michael Obafemi get his first goal for the club. It was a big moment for him, and hopefully he can push on and get a lot more goals for us. As I said, winning the last two home games was really important for us because we need to make our stadium a plac e where no team want s to come. We need to continue that by building a strong home record and continue to play with intensity and intent. We go into today ’s game in good shape, particularly with a number of our squad having played for 90 minutes in the under-23s’ win over Watford on Monday. The attitude and mentality of the guys has been exactly w h at we n e e d i t t o b e, a n d they took the opportunity with both hands. Some of

the lads who played in that game have put themselves in the frame for selection. Their professionalism shows the culture at the club is strong. Off the pitch, another member of our squad has become a father for the first time. Jake Bidwell missed the game at Birmingham City to be by his wife Meg’s side for the birth of their beautiful son Rui. Everyone is delighted for them and huge congratulations to the newest parents in our squad. Finally, we welcome P eterborough today for our latest challenge. I had a great 18 months at P eterborough d u r i n g m y p l a y i n g c a r e e r. Darren Ferguson was my manager and I really enjoyed working with him. He’s doing a brilliant job at Peterborough and I look forward to seeing him today. Enjoy the game, Russell

ood afternoon and welcome to everyone joining us for this afternoon’s Championship game against Peterborough United at the Swansea.com Stadium.

There was no shouting or anything like that at halftime, the gaffer just insisted that we kept playing the way we wanted to play and that’s exactly what we did.

We went into our last home game against West Brom knowing we had to back up o u r w i n i n t h e s o u t h Wa l e s derby with another brilliant performance. The game didn’t get off to the best of starts after we conceded in the first minute but the way in which we recovered was superb.

It was another goal and assist each for Joel Piroe and Jamie Paterson in what is proving to be a brilliant partnership on the pitch. They ’re both high on confidence and long may it continue.

To c o m e f r o m b e i n g a g o a l down so early on to go on and win 2-1 was testament to the spirit and character we have as a team, and I’m proud of the lads for sticking with it , playing our way and enjoying being out there.

However, we were disappointed with last Saturday’s defeat at St Andrew’s after what had been a demanding week. We all wanted to top it off with a third victory within seven days but it was frustrating that we didn’t manage to do that. It has been tough for Michael Obafemi after picking up an injury so soon after joining the club so

it was a positive to see him score his first goal in a Swans shirt. We had almost 1,600 members of the Jack Army behind us and they stuck by us throughout the game. The support is amazing and just motivates us to get results for you. We a l l w a n t t o g e t b a c k t o winning ways and bounce back from Saturday’s defeat with a win against Peterborough this afternoon. We’ v e h a d t h e b e n e f i t o f a full week without a match so we’ ve had an opportunity to put in more work in Fairwood and we’ll ensure we’re ready for what will be another test for us. Enjoy the match this afternoon! Matt

fter a well-deserved six points from two home games against Cardiff and West Brom, the realities of three games a week, in a highly competitive league, hit home against Birmingham. It’s always good to try and take a positive from a defeat and it was great to see Michael Obafemi get off the mark with his first goal for the Swans at the weekend – hopefully the first of many. Today, we welcome Peterborough United to the Swansea.com Stadium as we look to make it four league wins at home on the bounce.

Starting this Monday is the ‘Safer Gambling Week’ – a gambling industry initiative that places all responsibility on the individual to take control of their gambling. Of course, individual responsibility should not be overlooked, but neither should the gambling industry’s role in encouraging and sustaining addiction through mass marketing of addictive products.

For many it feels as if football has failed them. This is why it is so wonderful to see the club has moved away from gambling sponsorship in certain areas. The Supporters’ Trust is delighted that the Swans are now into the second season of their partnership with Swansea University. The Supporters’ Trust strives to support all Swans fans and members of the wider community, and we believe protecting future generations from exposure to gambling marketing is very important. ’Safer Gambling’ starts with more responsible betting companies. As a society, we stigmatise gambling addiction and events like ‘Safer Gambling Week’, or empty slogans like ‘Take Time to Think’ or ‘When the Fun Stops, Stop’ contribute toward this. For anyone out there in the Jack Army who read that and thought ‘that sounds like me’, the Supporters’ Trust always has someone available for a chat or to provide more information on the help that is available. Just drop us an email to info@swanstrust.co.uk It will be treated with full confidentiality.

Often, the mind of a gambling addict is scrambled, and recognising the signs, or even admitting them to yourself, can be hard. But there is always hope and a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step – often something as simple as reaching out to someone. If you feel like you need some time away from gambling, there is some great blocking software out there – look up GamBan and GamStop. If you, or anyone you know, has suffered a bereavement through a gambling-related suicide, then please get in touch with the charity Gambling with Lives. It has been set up by families and friends who lost loved ones to gambling-related suicides and aims to support other families in a similar position. Finally, back to the game, the last one we have at home now until after the next international break. Let’s hope the week off has reinvigorated the lads and we can see again the type of performance that we have all enjoyed over the past few weeks.

athan Dyer joined the Swansea City Foundation for their Black History Month Workshop during the October half-term.

Dyer, who retired at the start of this season, was happy to be able to be a part of the education and feels that more needs to be done to inform people about all races.

The free session for p ar ticip ant s of the P remier League Kicks programme was led by the Swansea City AFC Foundation to celebrate Black History Month.

“I think it’s amazing that they get to learn and educate themselves on a lot of things , I think all rac e needs to be learned and the awareness needs to be spre a d,” s aid D yer.

Swans legend Dyer joined the session to discuss his experiences with racism and share what he believes c an be done to tackle the issue.

“It’s incredibly important, I think it needs to start as young as possible, definitely in schools as well.

“I think the education system needs to have that implemented and start from an early age where they learn about all race. “ We then get to make our own decisions and understand how other people live and act differently and do things differently to a lot of others, it’s just the way of life. “It’s massive, all we can do is keep talking and educating and spreading the awarene ss , that ’s what needs to be done and be implemented a lot more.”

Ferguson is taking charge of his 500th game as Posh boss, having already broken Barry Fry’s previous record of 491 competitive games as manager. Ferguson is the only Posh manager to have won four promotions with the club, three of them into the Championship.

Has also managed Doncaster Rovers and Preston, while his playing career started under his father Sir Alex at Manchester United, before representing Wolves, Sparta Rotterdam and Wrexham before taking up a player-manager role with the Posh.

DARREN FERGUSON

The hugely experienced centre-back joined Posh last season, making 32 appearances as they won promotion from League One.

He started his career with Sheffield Wednesday, for whom he experienced League One promotion, and made over 160 appearances before a loan spell at MK Dons was made permanent. Three years in London was followed by a move back up north to Bolton in 2016. He won another promotion from League One and ended his spell there in 2019 as he joined Posh.

Formed in 1934, Peterborough United have spent their entire history in the lower levels of English football.

They are back in the second tier for the first time since 2013, having finished second in League One last term. EFL Trophy winners in 2014, Peterborough have a long history of nurturing players and attracting big transfer fees.

Most notably, Wales international Simon Davies began his career there, while Aaron Mclean, Craig MackailSmith, George Boyd, Dwight Gayle and Ivan Toney have all starred for them before moving on. Current Swans head coach Russell Martin also spent time at the club, becoming their youngest ever captain and leading them to promotion from League One in 2009. Their Posh nickname was born in 1921 when manager Pat Tirrell was reported as saying he was " looking for posh players for a posh new team.”

Good. They have won their last two league games, having only won two prior to that. Victories at Hull was followed by another at home against QPR, so they have momentum. In fact, they are looking to equal a club record of winning three consecutive Championship games for only the third time – having done so in 1992-93 and 2012-13. Prior to their recent run, Posh had lost seven of their last nine league games.

ack in 2005, two football managers were recognised for their contribution to the English language.

STILETTOS AND STUDS BY JULIE KISSICK

“Really?” I hear you cry. Indeed. Iain Dowie and Sir Alex Ferguson, (father of today’s opposition manager, Darren) were the men responsible for the coinage of the word ‘bouncebackability’ and the phrase ‘squeaky bum time’ and their inclusion in the Oxford English Dictionary. Dowie used ‘bouncebackability’ in relation to his Crystal Palace side’s ability to go from hovering just above the relegation zone to winning a play-off promotion in the 2003-4 campaign. Sir Alex told reporters it was ‘squeaky bum time’ in 2003 when his Manchester United side and arch-rivals Arsenal were both in contention to win the league. And when it comes to the language of football, both remain relevant today because they capture the very essence of the game from the fans and players perspective. Players need ‘bouncebackability’ regardless of the level they play at because results and performances can never be guaranteed, but disappointment and defeat can. After two pretty special wins, one against our old foes Cardiff City and the other against promotion contenders West Bromwich Albion, naturally the talk was of ‘building momentum’, ‘putting a good run together’ and ‘turning a corner’. Defeat at Birmingham last weekend changed the conversation and no doubt the focus for Russell Martin and his coaches this week will have been to make sure the players learn whatever lessons they can and focus on applying them against Peterborough today. Having ‘bouncebackability’ means, literally, bouncing back, learning and implementing lessons in order to be able to ‘go again’ without being hamstrung by previous onfield incidents and results.

It all sounds simple, doesn’t it? But the longer I’m around football the more I wonder how players and coaches cope with the pressure and unpredictability of the beautiful game. It is beautiful. It would never captivate so many of us for so long without that intrinsic, mystical ability it has to draw us in and convince us that even in defeat, better days are coming. In response to his side’s 5-1 defeat to archrivals Liverpool in 2014, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said: “You cannot consider one game as a trend, the pattern of our season. “A successful season is decided by how you respond to that and in any season, you have disappointments. It’s always down to the team to respond in a very positive way - that decides the success of the team. “I love this group of players. They deserve success and I think they will respond in a very positive way.” Wenger was reinforcing his belief in his side and was already teeing-up the idea that they had the potential to bounce back with a victory in the next game. We’re hoping for that against Posh this afternoon. Ferguson’s side have won their last two games and will be keen to bank a third, especially after the elation of an injury-time winner against Queens Park Rangers last weekend. Our focus is on showing the level of ‘bouncebackability’ which results in a dominant display and victory, rather than 90-plus minutes of ‘squeaky bum time’.

AT THE AGE OF 30 AND WITH OVER 400 APPEARANCES TO HIS NAME, KOREY SMITH IS STILL LEARNING NEW TRICKS UNDER RUSSELL MARTIN. HERE, HE DISCUSSES PLAYING UNDER HIS FORMER TEAMMATE, A NEW ROLE AND A POTENTIAL COACHING CAREER AFTER HANGING UP HIS BOOTS. CONTINUES ON NEXT PAGE....

Korey, great to have you back in action after injury in the opening game stalled your s t a r t t o t h e s e a s o n . Yo u ’ r e back in the team, and in a new advanced role in midfield, which is not where we’d usually see you. How are you finding it? Me and Pato laugh quite a bit, because, you know, some of the other players from other teams come up to me like ‘Smudge, what you doing up here?’ in the middle of the game -- I remember Curtis Davies against Derby was like ‘what are you doing in the hole?’ I’ ve always played in a more defensive midfield role over the years, and I guess that’s what I’m known for, getting around the pitch in that position. But I’m not complaining, I get to play higher up the field, and I’m quite enjoying it, to be honest. Whatever I’m asked to do – I’m just a player that works hard and tries to give my best, and wherever I’m playing, I’ll do my best. From a new position to a new experience recently. Due to Covid, the derby win over Cardiff saw you play in front of a packed Swansea.com Stadium for the first time since you arrived last season. How did you find that? I was here last year but it was during the pandemic, the fans weren’t allowed in the stadium, but a few came back towards the end of the season.

This season, I played the first game away from home and since then I got injured. When I came back, three of the four games I played were away. So, the Cardiff game was like my first start at home this season. The atmosphere was incredible, you could just feel how much it meant to everyone. And it was just amazing when you can feel the fans behind you. Sometimes you play in front of fans, and you can feel that they want you to do well. You can feel that they’re on edge and that they ’re waiting for something to happen. Fair to say, we’ve played a little bit of catch up given Russell Martin was appointed a few days before our opening game. How do you feel the season has progressed for us? If you look at our first game, when the gaffer came in until now, it's unbelievable. We’ve been working up the pitch from the back, using the international breaks to put in the extra work to get the style of play right. I think in some of the performances we’ve absolutely dominated so many teams this year and it has just been that cutting edge, but once that clicks like it did against Cardiff, it will give us confidence and hopefully we can recreate more of those performances. We’re really enjoying the style, and we’re really enjoying playing together at the moment. Hopefully, the results will carry on picking up.

PAGE 33

How different is the style for a player compared to last season? It’s very different, every head coach has a different style of play at the end of the day. The gaffer has come in and he’s brought his own ideas and it’s something that I’ve never really come across in my career before. Like I said, we’ve used the time in the international breaks to take the time to train and I think we’re just getting better every week and I feel we’ll just continue to grow as the season goes on. We’ve got a lot of confidence in it, we might have a few up and downs along the way but in the end, it’ll come good. For a player who is experienced as you are, what sort of things haven’t you really seen before? It’s really hard to explain, the positioning, the movements. Again, it’s hard to explain unless you’re on the training pitch. But I don’t want to give too much away. If I ever went into coaching, I’d definitely take a few of those ideas with me. Is it fair to say that as a squad, you’re getting used to it now? Yes, 100 per cent. From that first performance until now I feel like everyone can see, the fans know and can see that we’re playing really well. So, I feel like that’s what they’re happy about, they love the style of play. E ve r yo n e a ro u n d t h e wo r l d knows we’re a footballing club and that we want to play good football. And that’s why they’re so behind us.

PAGE 34

It’s just getting the right balance, we did it well with getting the balls in behind against Cardiff and West Brom and making those runs. But it’s not just that, we had the most clean sheets in the league until last weekend. So people say you can play football, but if you look at the stats, defensively, we’re very strong. I think in the derby game, Cardiff had the least touches in our box that they’ve had against any team all season. So, we’re obviously doing something right. Can I just take you back to when Russell Martin got the job – it’s a strange one for you because you knew him as a team-mate? To be fair, I actually spoke to him the week before when I heard his name was linked. I dropped him a message - I still kept in touch with him, and we spoke in the summer when he was at MK Dons. He gave me a call and we had a little chat. He was asking about the place and I obviously had nothing but good things to say. It was a bit strange, the first two weeks I was saying ‘Russ, Russ’, it was natural for me. I told him it’s not offensive if I call you that, it’s just natural. I’ve got used to saying gaffer now. I just think he’s doing an absolutely brilliant job, and I can completely understand why Swansea have given him the job. All the players are really enjoying working under him, I’m enjoying working under him.

What are your memories of Russell as a player? Yeah, we had some good times together, to be fair; obviously we had the promotion together at Norwich. He was always a professional player at right-back. He always did his job, always doing the extra things as well, and, like you said, I was a little bit younger, and he was always brilliant with the younger lads. I think he’s t aken that into management now. He obviously likes to bring in a few of the young players and mixing it with the experience that we’ve got. It’s been an interesting one because I’ve never really worked under a head coach that I’ve played with before, but it ’s something I’m really enjoying. Has the relationship changed now that he’s your boss? The gaffer’s a personality, you know. He’s very calm, he’s an easy person to talk to. It’s been quite natural, he hasn’t made it an awkward thing or anything, and we just carry on in our conversations. He knows that I’m an older player now, and I’ve played a lot in this league, so I think he knows he can come to the likes of me, Benno and other players now, and we can have those chats. And he’s got someone that he can trust. I’m really enjoying working with him, and like I said, I can see why Swansea employed him and gave

him the job, because I can see that he’s got a really bright future in management. Yo u h a d y o u r f a i r s h a r e o f success at Norwich together too. Yeah, so that’s what I mean, we’ve had some really good times, to be honest, and good memories - two promotions together. When you’re in a changing room with someone that you’ve shared that kind of memory with, it’s always a good one. Back to the present day, it’s still early in the season, but the signs are positive. At this footb all club, that ’s what we’ll always aim for. At the beginning of the season, in pre-season, there was a lot of change. We came so close last year, and, to be fair to the boys, the year before. But there was a lot of change at the beginning of the season, and it takes time to change to different styles of play, with different player s c oming in and out. But I think the end goal for this club is always to get back to the Premier League, and that’s where the players want to be, and the fans. Obviously we’re in the bottom half at the moment, but like I said, we’re building and we’re only going to get better. We’re trying to look up the table; we’ve got some tough games coming up, and the league’s relentless, as it always is, but, yeah, that’s always the end goal.

MICHAEL OBAFEMI: I’VE FALLEN IN LOVE WITH THE JACK ARMY

M

ichael Obafemi has expressed he has “ fallen in love” with the Jack Army and says the support he receives motivates him to score more goals after netting his first goal for the club in last weekend’s defeat at Birmingham. The summer signing, who made the switch from Southampton on deadline day in August, had been sidelined since September ’s 3-3 draw against Luton Town due to ongoing muscle problems but made his return as a 57th minute substitute in last Saturday’s match at St Andrew’s. And the striker c ame off the bench to net the equaliser in the Midlands, despite the Swans eventually falling to a narrow defeat. “It feels amazing to score my first goal for the club, it was a long time coming,” said the 21-year-old. “ That was a nice feeling but it’s just disappointing that we couldn’t get the three points to round off a perfect week.

“It ’s been difficult, I’ ve had a lot of injuries in the past as well but I’ve come to every game, supported the boys and cheering like I’m on the pitch or like I’m one of the fans,” he added. “It hurts me that I can’t help the team but I will still suppor t the te am no matter what, whether I’m on the pitch or on the bench. “The medical staff have been great, they haven’t rushed me at all. They just said for me to come back in my own time and when I feel ready, so I’m thankful for them and hopefully I’ll have an injuryfree season.” The 1,600-strong Jack Army sang Obafemi’s name following his introduction to the pitch at St Andrew’s - support that the striker is incredibly grateful for. “It’s an amazing support, I’ve already fallen in love with the fans,” smiled Obafemi.

“It was all about just getting that first goal to get me started and I finally got that so I’m happy.”

“The support they give me is amazing and gives me chills on the pitch. It makes me want to score goals and that’s what I’m here to do and hopefully I can do more of that.

T he striker has fac ed a tough spell after sustaining an injury so soon after joining Russell Martin’s side but has continued to support his team-mates from the stands.

“We want to get back to winning ways and hit the ground running straight away. We’ve got a full week to prepare for Peterborough and our focus is to get three points.”

Swansea Under-23s side comprising a number of fir st-te am player s defeated Watford Under-23s in the Professional Development League. Senior figures Steven Benda, Liverpool loanee Rhys Williams, Brandon Cooper, Jay Fulton, Liam Walsh, Yan Dhanda, Morgan Whittaker and Liam Cullen all featured for 90 minutes as they picked up some valuable gametime for Kris O'Leary's side, who were watched on by first-team boss Russell Martin in Landore. Much like Martin’s side, Swansea controlled possession for long periods of the game with patient passing eventually creating opportunities. Goals from Dhanda and Cullen in the first half proved enough for the Swans. The Swans took the lead early through Dhanda. Swansea won

the ball back high up the field and fed the ball into the midfielder, who fired it past the goalkeeper from close range.

Jacob Jones came close to making it three, but his header from Dhanda’s cross bounced over the crossbar.

Cullen doubled the lead just three minutes later as he got onto the end of a low cross from Tivonge Rushesha before burying a shot into the bottom left corner.

Despite Swansea controlling the game for the majority of the second half, the Hornets defence held strong through the second half to keep the contest at 2-0.

Swansea continued to dominate possession and went close to extending their lead a number of times, with Morgan Whittaker and Cullen both going close. Watford created their first real chance of the game though Jimiel Chikukwa. He cut in from the left and fired a low effort but Steven Benda got down well to push the effort away. Cullen thought he had his second of the afternoon 67 minutes in, reacting first after Walsh’s longrange shot was parried, but his goal was ruled out for offside.

TEAM LINEUP Swans: Steven Benda, Tivonge Rushesha (Jacob Jones, 45), Rhys Williams, Brandon Cooper (capt), Jay Fulton, Lincoln McFayden (Azeem Abdulai, 60), Dan Williams, Liam Walsh, Yan Dhanda, Morgan Whittaker, Liam Cullen. Subs not used: Nico Defreitas-Hansen, Tarelle Whittaker, Ben Erickson.

abio Tavares’ brace proved the difference as Swansea City Under-23s were beaten by Coventry City at Landore in the Professional Development League. The Swans had looked set to pick up a point from this encounter, which was watched by first-team head coach Russell Martin, after sub Tarrelle Whittaker levelled with nine minutes left. But Tavares, who had opened the scoring in the 16th minute, regained the lead just four minutes after the Swans had equalised, while Richard Dinangia added further gloss on the visitors’ victory with the last kick of the game. Victory helped Coventry maintain top spot in the North section, while the Swans remain eighth in the South division. The first half conjured a string of opportunities, with both teams creating chances. The Swans were first to attack after three minutes, with Azeem Abdulai winning possession before teeing up Ben Lloyd, but his 20-yard effort was padded wide for a corner by keeper Cian Tyler at full stretch. Home keeper Jamie Searle was then called into action as Coventry launched a counter attack and when a cross was diverted goalwards by Jacob Jones, only for the New Zealander to react well and swat the ball away from danger.

The Sky Blues then saw Tavares fire over after Lloyd had lost possession, but the striker would make up for that soon after. After the Swans played a quicklytaken goal-kick, Tavares pounced to claim possession and fire home from inside the box. O’Leary’s side went in search of an instant equaliser, with Rio Campbell intercepting captain Jonny Ngandu’s pass before finding Jaden Forrester. He cut inside onto his right foot before letting rip, and despite appeals for handball, referee Claudio Gavilucci wasn’t convinced. The Swans could, and should, have levelled just before the half-hour mark as Jacob Jones’ pinpoint cross found Forrester in the box, but his header from around 10 yards out dropped onto the top netting. After the break, Searle was alert to make a fine save low down to deny Aaron Evans-Harriott, before the Swans thought they had finally equalised. Lincoln McFayden looked to have kept a ball in play despite Coventry shielding the ball out for a goal-kick, and the wing-back tapped inside for Forrester to blast home. Up went the flag, signalling for a goal-kick, and the Swans’ effort was chalked off. This entertaining encounter continued with only the post saving the Swans when Dinangia beat Scott Butler for pace before cutting inside and seeing his low shot strike the woodwork.

The Swans, though, got the goal their efforts had deserved. After Coventry looked to the assistant to lift his flag for offside, the Swans pounced and sub Whittaker fired home from close range. That looked to have done enough to give the Swans at least a point, but Tavares had different thoughts. Dinangia drove into the box and drew Searle off his line, and his perfect pass allowed Tavares to sidefoot home into an empty net. And Coventry would add another with the last kick of the game as provided turned scorer with Dinangia racing in on goal before beating Searle from inside the box. Next up for the Swans is another home clash with Cardiff City in Landore on Monday night (7pm).

TEAM LINEUP Swans: Jamie Searle, Harry Jones, Jacob Jones, Azeem Abdulai, Scott Butler, Ben Erickson (capt), Lincoln McFayden, Ben Lloyd (Joel Cotterill, 62), Jaden Forrester (Tarrelle Whittaker, 62), Dylan Morgan, Rio Campbell (Sam Leverett, ht). Subs not used: Nico Hansen, Adrian Akande.

wansea City Under18s were defeated at Colchester United in the P rofessional Development League. The Swans sat just one place below Colchester heading into the game, with both te ams s e a r c h i n g fo r t h e i r s e c o n d league victory of the season. Swansea dominated the early proceedings, but it was Colchester who took the lead against the run of play. Just six minutes in, a low cross found Kacy Parish who smashed it in from close range. Cameron Congreve found an equaliser from an indirect freekick just 10 minutes later. After goalkeeper Endurance Johnson dropped the ball then picked it up again, Joel Cotterill laid off Congreve who fired a shot into the bottom left corner.

Colchester remained dangerous on the break throughout the first half despite Swansea dominating possession. Kaan Bennett broke down the left, but he dragged his shot wide. The U’s restored their lead just before the break, a long throw in found Parish who nodded it down and Yiazo Marcel-Dilangr fired in from close range. Colchester took this momentum into the second half and dominated the 45 minutes . Congreve tried his luck with a shot from dist anc e but it was held by the C olchester goalkeeper.

minutes to go, Ben Hughes made a good save from Bennett ’s shot before a second shot was blocked but B rad Ihionvien finally turned it in. Geoff Bony almost pulled one back for the Swans, with the ball ricocheting in the box before falling to the forward, but his effort was saved.

THE NEW SAINTS WOMEN 1

SWANS LADIES 5

S

wansea City Ladies ex t e n d e d t h e i r p e r fe c t record this season with a strong performance away to The New Saints. T he champions were in full ascendency in the first half taking a 3-0 lead into the halftime break with goals from Tija Richardson, Katy Hosford and captain Alicia Powe. The lead was extended by Hosford before TNS replied with a goal of their own, but Gwen Horgan reinstated the four-goal advantage in the final stages. The New Saints had the first glimpse of goal after Emily Ridge forced Gemma Border into a save with a volley from the edge of the penalty area. The Swans showed signs of the threat they c an c ause after Rhianne Oakley released S t a c ey J o h n - D av i s , b u t t h e winger ’s cross was gathered by Sarah Parkes.

John-Davis had a great chance to break the deadlock after Hosford slotted the ball through the middle of the TNS defence.

John-Davis was fed in behind TNS’ defence by Oakley, but she was denied by a fine reflex save from Parkes.

Soon after, Hosford saw her long-distance free kick hit the crossbar.

The lead was extended after John-Davis played a simple pass to Hosford who smashed it home from distance.

Swansea took the lead after Richardson leaped up and headed home Hosford’s corner delivery. The lead was doubled after Kelly Adams held off the defender and squared the ball across to Hosford who was on hand to tap the ball into an empty net. The visitors were firmly in command before the break after Shaunna Jenkins’ shot from outside the box deflected off Richardson to Powe who slotted in her first goal in two years. Ellie L ake looked to further increase the lead from distance, but Parkes was equal to the strike.

TNS pulled one back after Ridge caught Border off her line from long range. Then came a moment to remember for Horgan as a one-two with John-Davis led to her finding the bottom corner for the youngster’s first goal for the Swans.

TEAM LINEUP Swans: Gemma Border, Ellie Lake, Shaunna Jenkins (Jess Williams, 62), Alicia Powe (capt), Ria Hughes, Tija Richardson, Kelly Adams (Gwen Horgan, 72), Nia Rees (Laura Davies, 46), Stacey John-Davis, Katy Hosford, Rhianne Oakley.

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.

That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. R

ichie Benaud is widely regarded as one of the greatest sports broadcasters of all time.

JACK THE LAD

A legendary captain of the Australian cricket team, Benaud went on to become a hugely respected presenter and commentator. The natural all-rounder - both on and off the field - apparently had nine golden rules to presenting and commentating which he followed faithfully. One of them was that there are no teams in world sport called “we” or “they”. The point being, that as a broadcaster you never give any clue as to where your allegiances might lie. I’m not sure former Vetch Field legend and Swans TV expert summariser Wyndham Evans would agree. I didn’t hear his full cocommentary of the south Wales derby with Anthony O’Connell, because I was at the game But judging by the little snippets I heard on the highlights which were shown on the big screen before the West Brom game, I’m guessing there were a fair few mentions of both “they” and “we” during the 90 minutes! Now while I was a huge fan of Benaud’s impeccably impartial style and would never question the great man’s golden rules, I’m absolutely delighted Wyndham isn’t a strict advocate of the "we" and “they” rule. I’ve written before about how one of the few delights of the time we weren’t allowed to attend

PAGE 52

games was hearing Wyndham’s co-commentary with Anthony, who himself, while an excellent commentator, couldn't be accused of sitting on the fence as to where his Swans allegiances lie. And I was reminded of those lockdown commentaries again as Wyndham's whoops of delight accompanied the highlights of the Cardiff victory and echoed around the stadium prior to the West Brom match. To be fair, when Benaud drew up his golden rules, I’m sure he wasn’t thinking of Swans TV commentators, or any one of those calling matches for the myriad inhouse sports team TV channels we have these days. The scrupulously unbiased Benaud would have been broadcasting to global audiences who would have expected him to be impartial even if his beloved Australia were facing old Ashes rivals England. However, Wyndham, along with the likes of former Swans legends Alan Curtis, Lee Trundle and Kris O'Leary, who also share co-commentary duties, have no such worries. They know their audience, and their audience wants them to be informative and engaging, but they also want them to be 100 per cent behind the Swans - especially when we are playing our rivals from up the road. And Wyndham delivers on that front like no other. His response to the ball nestling in the Cardiff net via Jamie Paterson's boot and two posts was: "Yeeeeeeeessssssss! Get in there! What a goal! And WE deserve it! What a goal. It hit the two posts before going in! Hey, heeyyyy!"

Hearing Wyndham's delight echoing around the stadium made me ponder whether we could actually have his commentary played live over the tannoy here during matches. Can you imagine the atmosphere with 20,000 in the ground and Wyndham booming out of the loudspeakers urging the boys on and celebrating every throw in won by the boys? On second thoughts, perhaps the EFL might have something to say about it, let alone visiting supporters. In a similar vein to Wyndham, former Welsh international striker Malcolm Allen carries out a similar role on S4C’s Sgorio when Wales are playing. Some may argue that as a national broadcaster S4C commentators should be a little more impartial, but like Wyndham with Swans TV, the excitable Allen knows the vast majority of his audience will be rooting for Wales. To be fair, Allen tries to keep his excitement under wraps as much as he can during general play, but it's a different matter when Wales score. If you’re looking for instant indepth, expert analysis of a Wales goal then maybe Allen on S4C isn’t for you. As soon as the ball crosses the line he launches into a high pitched scream of delight which transcends any language barrier. If you’re out of the room and Wales score, you’ll know exactly what has happened whether you are fluent in Welsh or not.

Allen's voice can be a little on the hoarse side at the best of times, but in the aftermath of a Welsh goal it is particularly croaky. But like Wyndham, don’ t be fooled into thinking he is a mere cheerleader. The former Watford, Norwich City and Newcastle United striker, who also played 14 times for his country, knows what he's talking about. Watch the forthcoming Belarus and Belgium World Cup Qualifiers on S4C and Allen won't hesitate to point where he feels Wales are going wrong if things aren't going the home side's way. Woe betide any Welsh central defender who pays more attention to the winger crossing the ball than the forward waiting for it - a particular pet hate of his. And Wyndham, who boasts the immense experience and expertise earned by playing almost 400 games for the club, isn't afraid to show his frustration with the team if he feels his beloved Swans aren't performing up to standard. His groans of disappointment can be almost as loud as his cheers of delight if a player doesn't come up to his high standards. I’m not sure whether Wyndham will be on duty for today’s game, but I just know wherever he is watching the game, it will be a case of "we" and "they" or "us" and "them" for the whole 90 minutes. And we love him to bits for it! C'mon you Swans!

“It was a hell of a time. One minute I was walking the streets chatting with my mates looking for a job and the next I was signing professional, playing for my hometown club. “It was a childhood dream. A wonderful experience, w o n d e r f u l . Yo u c o u l d n ’ t write it. I was massively proud, as were my parents.” He was selected following a trial match at Landore and a week later was offered the chance to sign for his hometown club. He packed a lot into three years and looking back, 40 years on, he says to have been signed by someone of the calibre of John To s h a c k , t h e L i v e r p o o l and Wales legend, and to be able to tell people he played for the Swans is the stuff of dreams. He played 11 games and scored two goals, making his home debut against M a n sf i e l d at t h e Vet c h Field in a game he wasn’t meant to play in. “I was injured at the time a n d I w e n t t o t h e Ve t c h o n the morning of the match a n d To s h a c k a s k e d m e h o w I was feeling. I said I wasn’t too bad and he said that was good because I was playing that night. I had no preparation. I was just chucked in the deep end.

“ The atmosphere at the Ve t c h w a s j u s t i n c r e d i b l e . Yo u w a l k e d o n t h e p i t c h and it was as if you were in the crowd. It took my breath away when I first walked out there. There were about 16,000 there, which was good for the Ve t c h i n a m i d w e e k g a m e . “I was overawed at the time but I had my two goals a n d I w a s s o h a p p y. I w a s proud. “My mother and father were there because we always had two or three tickets per game so they were there and I was living at home with them at the time and when we got back the phone just didn’t stop. It was an incredible experience.” The teenager also featured in the local and national newspapers, from the South Wales Evening P ost t o t h e D a i l y M i r r o r. “It was unbelievable, the interest in my debut. My father made a scrapbook of all the papers, and I’ ve s t i l l g o t i t n o w. ”

release me. I was shocked. I couldn’t believe it and lots of people around me were too, they couldn’t believe that I had gone. “ There were six of us went at the same time. I was devastated. Devastated. It was a horrible time. I was just 20 and I was in shock. I couldn’t believe it. “I did play for a few teams after that but it was different because it wasn’t playing for the Swans. It was a horrible time, but I have always been so proud that I managed to play for the Swans. “It all turned right in the end because I’m happily married with two kids, four grandkids, so happy days.” Despite being a pro for three years, Baker spent a year out of work before following many other former Swans to the Post Office to take up a job as a postman - and his new employer was very happy to add him to the explayer ranks.

Sadly for Baker his time with the Swans was relatively short because after three years with the club he was given the devastating news that he was being let go.

“I’ ve been there forty years next month. In those days they asked if you could play football – that was the interview - and if you could play you were in, especially if you’d played for the Swans. That was it, the job was yours.

“I had a phone call at half past eight in the morning to ask me to come down [to t h e Ve t c h F i e l d ] a n d t h e y said they were going to

“ There were loads of us in there, Robbie James, Nigel S t e v e n s o n . We h a d a h e l l o f a side but we couldn’t win anything!”
