The Fine Art team is pleased to introduce the 2012 degree show which is the culmination of much hard work, planning and anticipation by the graduating students. This is their chance to showcase their work at a pivotal moment between university and the professional world. Throughout the students’ time at Swansea, their studios have been animated places with lively discussion about the relationship between concepts and the appropriate means of expressing these visually. No medium or method is excluded – we encourage the students to consider which material is most pertinent for their ideas, from fabrication to painting and drawing, to video, performance, and installation. There is no hierarchy of medium and a flexibility of approach is paramount. The range of work shown here reflects this philosophy, with a myriad of accents and themes within the context of the ever-expanding and shifting language of contemporary arts practice.

The course offers support and constructive criticism through tutorials, but allows you to develop your practical work as an individual with excellent resources and workshops. There are modules to help develop the professional side of your work and gain knowledge of approaching galleries after graduation. Philip Cheater Graduate Artist in Residence

Illustration is more than just imagery. It is about the remarkable moment when message and meaning is visually communicated. Often through intrigue, playful enchantment and even contradiction, illustration seeks to delight, entertain and question the world we live in.

This year’s exhibition promises to ignite the senses and illustrate just how diverse this creative discipline has become. Embracing a broader notion of this unique art form, our graduate show will highlight the way in which illustration communicates through a range of cultural and sociological means, in an ever-expanding range of media. MA Fine Art, Photography, Textiles & Visual Communication - Contemporary Dialogues

Exhibition Details:

22

Venue Swansea Metropolitan University, Ty Bryn Glas Private View: 15 June Open to the public: 18 – 21 June Contact: Dr. Paul Jeff Email: paul.jeff@smu.ac.uk Tel: 01792 481285

The Art & Design Masters portfolio at SMU is, we believe, unique in Masters provision in the UK. Each programme, Fine Art, Photography, Visual Communication and Textiles, carries the affix ‘contemporary dialogues’, and this is not merely to denote the usual claims of interdisciplinary practices, but it carries an ethos of experimental practice and multi-modality throughout our pedagogical remit. Students from the four pathways share a large proportion of lectures and seminars so ideas and practices can cross-fertilise. Workshops are offered in all disciplines to allow the student to supplement their skill base, and they are encouraged early on to work across disciplines in a thought experiment where process based projects are disseminated in performative ‘pecha kucha’ presentations.

There is equal emphasis on materiality as well as potential non-material and performative activities. However it is up to each student to determine their own discourse within their chosen medium and to what extent they create a dialogue with other media. Some examples: The architect becomes photographer, the photographer becomes performer, the performer becomes photographer, the painter becomes situationist, the ceramicist becomes weaver ,the philosopher becomes textile artist and the painter becomes... well, painter! In truth most students are extending their practice, the possibilities are myriad; new dialogues, new discourses, new artists, ...oh and we had a dancer become a photographer once!
