What if I have some questions?
Swansea Metropolitan has been a major centre for the delivery of vocational higher education since 1853. We employ more than 500 staff and teach more than 6,500 students. Swansea Met was formed from the three former Swansea colleges of Art, Teacher Education and Technology which were founded in 1853, 1872 and 1895 respectively. Swansea Metropolitan, which is a integral part of the University of Wales: Trinity Saint David, contributes significantly to the life of Swansea and the surrounding area and is one of the region’s largest employers.
Registry staff will probably be able to answer most of your questions. If you want specific course details or advice on particular entry requirements, then Registry staff may advise you to contact the appropriate member of our teaching staff.
Part-Time Study Studying for a qualification around your busy lifestyle is more than possible with a wide range of career focused part-time courses at Swansea Met. We offer higher degrees by research, a wide range of taught programmes and a number of popular professional qualifications. All have been designed with the world of work in mind. If you would like to study towards an undergraduate degree or HND but can’t commit to studying on a full-time basis, studying on a part-time basis might be the key to your future success. You can study around your current commitments, at your own pace, gradually gaining credit which will count towards your final qualification. Studying for an undergraduate qualification can take between two and six years to complete, depending on how much time you have available to commit towards the course. There are no fees for anyone who is unwaged and studying part-time towards an undergraduate qualification.

Access Courses An increasing number of mature students apply to us following completion of Access courses. Access courses are run in partnership with local Further Education Colleges and can lead students onto degree courses. Access courses are designed for people with few or no formal qualifications, who would benefit from some study experience. We are a member of the South West Wales Access Consortium.
Credit for Prior Learning Swansea Met will recognise and may give credit for learning and outcomes, however achieved. If you have a professional qualification or a qualification from another institution, you may also receive credit at the discretion of the University.

Assessment of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) Knowledge and skills acquired through work experience or in-house training are eligible for consideration for exemption. This includes study which may not have been formally tested.
‘Advanced Standing’ Exemptions may be awarded which permit a student to enter with ‘advanced standing’. If you have previously studied at higher education level, for example, you may wish to apply for entry to Level 2 of a degree scheme. Applicants for ‘advanced standing’ would normally hold an award in an appropriate subject or have an equivalent qualification.
Library and Learning Resources All students on part-time programmes can use any of the Libraries on the main campuses at Mount Pleasant, Dynevor, Swansea Business School (Tˆy Bryn Glas) and Townhill. More than a thousand current journals are taken and students are able to borrow from a collection of over 180,000 volumes. Internet connected computers are available for use in each library.
Computing Open access rooms are available on Mount Pleasant, Dynevor, Swansea Business School (Tˆy Bryn Glas) and Townhill Campuses from about 8.30am to 8.30pm on Mondays to Thursdays, and until 4.30pm on Fridays. The Libraries have computer rooms which are open when the Libraries are open.
Catering Facilities are available on all Campuses for a range of hot and cold snacks and drinks. The modern student refreshment areas at Mount Pleasant and Swansea Business School (Tˆy Bryn Glas) will, in particular, cater for students attending part-time evening courses.
Transport All campuses lie on main bus routes with regular bus services between the City Centre and the Campuses. During term time, a daytime bus service goes to all Campuses. Parking for cars is limited, especially at Mount Pleasant, with on-street parking nearby being restricted. In the evenings, it is easier, and parking is possible on the Townhill Campus, whilst some parking for students may be possible at Pen-y-Bryn, near the Mount Pleasant Campus. Special provision can be made for disabled drivers. There are several car parks near Swansea Business School (Tˆy Bryn Glas), the new Faculty of Business and Management building next to High Street Station. The Mount Pleasant Campus is a 10-minute walk from Swansea’s High Street railway station.
Fees The fees for the programmes will vary according to the level and the number of hours of study followed. Some programmes have residential or workshop elements to them, and costs are normally included in the fees quoted. Where programmes prepare students for examinations set by another body, you will have to pay those fees yourself. Registration fees are payable for some programmes. This applies to waged and unwaged. With the exception of such registration fees (which cover a period of time longer than a year), all fees quoted are payable each year.
Swansea Metropolitan and Sustainability Swansea Met is committed to sustainability. We have gained top grades for sustainability in the British university sector and have won a number of awards such as the Wales Sustainable Business award. Most of our courses consider relevant aspects of sustainability. We have significantly reduced our carbon footprint alongside our energy and water usage. In 2010 over half our waste was recycled. Students and staff are encouraged to travel more sustainably and we are working towards gaining environmental management certification. We have a large wildlife area on our Townhill Campus which includes an outdoor classroom and teaching space. For more information, visit the sustainability pages on the University website.

Here are some suggestions:
Part-time students, who do not receive a wage or salary, studying 60 credits or less per year towards a degree or HNC/D, and are unable to apply for the part-time grant may have their tuition fees waived. It is this group who need most help to enter the job market with recognised qualifications behind them and this initiative is aimed at taking some of the worry away from students who just don’t have the money to spare. Students will, however, be liable to pay registration fees or charges for facilities, equipment and materials, residential courses and weekend elements, where these are requirements of programmes. Note that unwaged Masters students will be subject to fees.

The Government will pay a contribution towards your fees and also provide students with a grant towards course costs. This grant is means tested. Contact your Local Education Authority for application forms. Part-time students have to be studying at least 50% of a full-time course and do not have a degree qualification to be eligible.
Sponsored by your Employer? A letter of authorisation is required, if a student is being sponsored by their employer. The letter should state that the company is liable for payment of tuition fees for the academic period with the correct company address and department, contact name and telephone number for invoice purposes. If a sponsor letter is not presented on enrolment, then the student will be liable for payment of fees.
Financial Contingency Funding Available Some funding is available from the University for those who may not be able to continue with their full- or part-time course because they are facing some form of financial hardship. Application forms are available from the Reception areas at the University. Part-time students have to be studying for a set number of credits per year to be eligible for funding. * Subject to final confirmation for 2013/14

Course Description: The programme aims to develop the skills necessary for a successful career in the advertising and publishing sectors. It develops a range of creative abilities, as well as practical illustration skills. The use of computers and appropriate software plays an important part in the programme.
The School offers all of its programmes on a full- and part-time basis, with part-time students attending the same classes as full-time students. All of the programmes are modular - modules are studied for up to 30 weeks including assessment. As a part-time student, you can choose to study one, two or three modules at a time, depending on your own circumstances and particular interests. MA in Photography - Contemporary Dialogues Course Description: The digital revolution has not only challenged most of our assumptions about photography and its social functions, but has also enabled contemporary dialogues between the medium itself and other interactive creative practices such as theatre, performance and site-specific interventions. MA Textiles - Contemporary Dialogues Course Description: Textile designers and artists are increasingly defining new and challenging dialectics through which to consider their practice. Contemporary dialogues within textiles are addressing innovation between traditional and digital developments as well as relating to other mediums from fine art practice, to automotive technology, to medical research. You will be encouraged to consider your existing practice within a dialoguing forum; through lectures, seminars and an experimental approach to process, materiality and outcome. The MA will facilitate a high level of research, practice and experimentation, specialising in the development of innovative products and processes. Students will learn to experiment constantly with new textile developments and applications using both high-technology and hand-crafted techniques. The programme is based in the Dynevor Centre for Arts, Design and Media, equipped with state-of-the-art technology and traditional textile facilities.

Course Description: Much contemporary visual arts practice is concerned with a re-evaluation of the traditional forms and functions of art in society. This programme facilitates the development of your practice whether it involves drawing, painting or printmaking, lens-based and time-based media, site-specific installations, or combinations of these. You will be encouraged to relate your practice to the contemporary dialogues within visual culture which are introduced in lectures and discussed in seminars, and to develop skills in the manipulation of materials so that your work becomes both conceptually robust and perceptually intriguing.

MSc Industrial Design Course Description: The MSc Industrial Design programme aims to reconcile consumer needs with manufacturing possibilities. It is concerned with the advancement of innovative paradigms for new product development. It does this by allowing students to explore alternative design methodologies in an increasingly digital field. This programme is of particular benefit to those working as designers/engineers in a design and development environment. The programme places a strong emphasis on the integration of the latest Computer Aided Design tools and Rapid Prototyping Technologies. The objective is to allow students to expand their knowledge base and contribute to the development of their profession. The lecture programme extends to embrace all the aspects of human environment which are conditioned by industrial production in order to determine the formal qualities of objects produced in industry. MA Product Design and Innovation Course Description: This programme will explore the nature of the innovation process and its relationship to the design and development of consumer and industrial products. The programme provides a platform for students to further their knowledge of the nature of innovation and the necessity for its application in the design of innovative products, systems and services. The main strands of the programme are creativity, innovation and product design. This course has been designed to ensure graduates are given the best possible support to realise the exploitation of their own or their company’s IPR (Intellectual Property Rights). The programme provides graduates with the opportunity to develop their expertise to make them a more effective and reflective design practitioner.

MA Transportation Design Course Description: The MA in Transportation Design at Swansea emphasises the design of niche and alternative fuelled forms of transport which explore our evolving relationship to mobility in a shrinking world. Design strategies aim to encourage free thinkers who are prepared to challenge received wisdom in the pursuit of excellence in vehicle design. This programme explores the inter-relationship of form and emotion in the design and development of all forms of transport. The programme provides a platform for students to further their knowledge of the nature of automotive design and the necessity for its application in the design of sustainable forms of transport. BSc(Hons) Civil Engineering and Environmental Management Course Description: Civil Engineering is the practice of improving and maintaining the built and natural environment to enhance the quality of life for present and future generations. BSc(Hons) Quantity Surveying Course Description: Quantity Surveying is the UK term for Commercial Management; from house building to process engineering on oil rigs, these surveyors need to have strong financial, analytical, interpretative and teamwork skills. Clients rely on their judgement to ensure the smooth running of the project. They are involved in infrastructure work such as building motorways and bridges. Their involvement in development projects begins at the feasibility stage, continues through the detailed design and construction stages and will often continue when the project is completed and handed over.
Consequently no two days are the same. A typical day could include a cost plan appraisal of schematic development plans, preparing a Bill of Quantities for a new project, visiting a site under construction to carry a measured valuation of works undertaken to prepare the payment certificate, followed by a meeting with the client to discuss the financial status of the project. Quantity surveyors require a keen eye for detail together with commercial awareness and a good knowledge of the construction methods. Quantity Surveyors are increasingly required to use sophisticated software to interpret designs produced using Computer Aided Modelling. Students will be introduced to a wide range of quantity surveying processes using traditional manual and computerised techniques to provide a good grounding for their careers in the industry. Course Description The MSc Financial Management enhances the skills and competences of experienced financial managers, but also provides a launch into a financial management career for more recent graduates. The programme is designed to fit comfortably within the new accounting educational framework incorporating academic rigour with practical experience. It would also provide a route for qualified accountants and finance professionals to obtain a level 7 masters award in financial management. Qualified chartered accountants are likely to only have to complete the part 2 dissertation stage, as their professional qualification such as ACCA or CIMA should exempt them from the part 1 modules. MSc Computer Networks Course Description: This programme seeks to cover the shortage areas of both hardware and software networking. Extensive study is made of routers, switches and other networking technology in our Cisco-equipped state-of-the-art laboratory. The School is a Cisco Regional Academy and is also able to offer industry certification (CCNA) to students. The course will also educate students in advance server configuration using Microsoft and Open Source technologies. The School is also a Microsoft Academy. Programming techniques relevant to networking are also covered in some detail using Java. MSc e-Commerce (Business) MSc e-Commerce (Technology) Course Description: e-Commerce can be defined as the buying and selling of goods and services on the Internet, especially the World Wide Web. It covers such aspects as marketing, advertising, sales order processing and customer service. A typical e-Commerce site would include a range of facilities and functions, beyond those expected of a traditional web site. For example, stock databases, catalogues, search engine, ordering system, security, order tracking, customer management and stock management. A hardware infrastructure is required to support this typical site, consisting of a range of computing and communications equipment. The postgraduate programmes MSc e-Commerce (Business) and MSc e-Commerce (Technology) cover the development of software content for the web and the associated business, security and legal practices. The Business pathway then specialises in the legal and marketing aspects of e-Commerce while the Technology pathway specialises in advanced web content creation and the provision of hardware. MA Glass Course Description: The MA Glass course builds upon the School’s 78 years of experience as the only specialist School of Architectural Glass in the UK. The masters course aims to develop practice that is concerned with re-evaluating architectural glass traditions, conventions and value systems. It is this rigorous re-interpretation process, both physical and psychological, that will inevitably define the parameters of the individual student's personal study. Glass offers some remarkable properties, not least transparency and durability. These have been exploited in the architectural context for thousands of years. Huge advances have been made in glass technology, and it would seem that the possibilities of the material grow daily rather than diminish. The pace of change is such that it has made it difficult for the practitioner to keep abreast of new developments. This MA provides the opportunity to explore these new possibilities and knowledge as well as developing new skills and approaches to working in glass. This course is ideally suited to applicants who are involved with or who have a background in the applied and decorative arts though candidates from a wide variety of design backgrounds will be considered. HND/BA(Hons) Glass Course Description: This vocational programme approaches the subject as an applied art in architecture. Students study traditional and contemporary practice, with an emphasis on practice based workshops, including drawing, design and making. Practical, hands-on making will help develop skills and confidence. Specialist options within the programme include traditional glass painting, glass painting, kiln-formed and hot glass, stained glass and decorative applications on float glass, such as sand blast engraving, acid etching, wheel engraving and gilding. The modules are project based and taught by specialist staff in well-equipped workshops. Professional standards of creative design, sound craftsmanship and architectural awareness are instilled throughout the course. Studies are supported by visual, professional and historical studies, including the history of stained and decorative glass. The School has strong links with industry in Britain and abroad, especially Finland, France and Germany, and provides opportunity for visits, exchanges and work placements.

HNC Glass Course Description: The course is delivered as a part-time evening programme consisting of five modules each delivering an opportunity to learn traditional and contemporary techniques used in Glass. There is an emphasis on craft skills, design and drawing. All five modules must be completed to be awarded a HNC qualification. Each 30-credit module runs for 15 weeks. Course Breakdown: Stained Glass Practice: 15 weeks. A module introducing crafts skills to design and manufacture a stained glass panel within the timeframe. The skills taught include; design, cartooning, glass cutting, glass painting, leading and cementing. Decorative Glass Processes: 15 weeks. A module introducing the skills required to design and manufacture two sandblasted panels on glass and mirrors, also includes design skills, cartooning, manufacture of samples and glasswork. Warm Glass: 15 weeks. An introduction to kiln-forming processes such as fusing, frits, relief work, kiln firing schedules and the design and fabrication of a small panel. Design Practice: 15 weeks. A module introducing methods of how to approach designing for a site specific location and within this module the outcome is the manufacture of a design and scaled cartoon. Student Centred Project: 15 weeks. This is the final module of the HNC enabling the student to draw on experiences of previous modules to design, cartoon and manufacture a panel for a site specific location. Entry Requirements for all BEng Programmes: For our BEng degrees, our offers are based on 240 points from numerate or technical A level subjects, to include Maths or Physics at grade B or above. We will accept a National Diploma, Certificate, two National Awards or the new 14-19 Diploma in Technical subjects, but 60 points of the 240 must come from A level/AS Maths or Physics. Providing you can achieve the points required, two A levels would be sufficient if at grade B with 60 points made up from other qualifications. MSc Non Destructive Testing and Evaluation The technology and applications of Non Destructive Testing (NDT) are wide ranging and constantly evolving. Major fields of application include the aerospace industry, oil, gas and energy generation, chemical industries, space technology, rail transport, shipping and manufacturing. Other applications are constantly emerging and there are strong links with medical technology. New NDT techniques need to be developed to meet the changing needs of recent developments in composite materials and emerging micro and nano-technologies. Careers in NDT often offer opportunities to travel and to work in new, high technology industries. The University is the lead academic partner in the NDT Validation Centre, just outside Swansea, and through this partnership has strong links with TWI, one of the UK’s largest research organisations, with an international reputation. The University has received significant funding for equipment and has an active research group in NDT, with strong industrial links, offering opportunities for industrial links for the Part 2 project. MSc Food Logistics Course Description: Food Logistics is an increasingly important aspect of the overall discipline of Logistics. It plays a vital role in the retail sector (e.g. supermarket groups), logistics companies, military operations, humanitarian operations, such as Oxfam, Christian Aid, United Nations, and food suppliers, ranging from individual farmers and growers to large multinational organisations. In addition to generic aspects of logistics, the discipline of food logistics brings particular challenges in, for example, legislation, handling, security and integrity and nutrition. CIPS qualifications are widely regarded as an international benchmark of excellence, enhancing standards of professionalism and performance throughout purchasing and supply. The CIPS programme offers qualifications from Level 4 to Level 6. The programme aims to provide students with a strong grounding in purchasing and business performance, building on previously learnt knowledge and work-based experience. Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling Practice Programme Length: The Diploma will run part-time over two years. Programme Description and Content: The programme sets out to provide an advanced academic understanding of counselling theory, practice and research from which is built a counselling practitioner’s training qualification that prepares postgraduates to work in a variety of settings as professional counsellors. Assessment: Academic assessments will test understanding, reflection and awareness of the context of practice. Practical assessments will explore the development of therapeutic skills and the capacity to develop a therapeutic alliance. As part of the programme students will be required to undertake 150 hours of supervised client work and 50 additional hours of ‘contextual’ practice. The course will be structured around the theories, values and principles of Humanistic counselling. BSc(Hons) / HNC/D Health and Social Care Course Description: The aim of the HNC/D in Health and Social Care is to provide learners with a vocationally relevant award that equips them with the knowledge and skills for work in a range of settings. The HNC is offered one day a week as a part-time programme. Students may continue for a third year to obtain the HND and will then be eligible to apply for the ‘Top Up’ BSc (Hons) in Health and Social Care. Master of Arts (Education) (MA Ed) Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDipEd) Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCertEd) (PT) Course Description: This is a modular postgraduate degree programme. Modules are designed to be school and classroom focused and allow teachers to use their daily experience as a teacher or manager as a key part of the study. To complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCertEd) teachers choose two modules from the portfolio. The Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDipEd) can be achieved by completing a further two modules chosen from the portfolio. Students who wish to complete the MA will be required to take the compulsory module: Research Methods: Teachers as Researchers in preparation for completion of research for a dissertation. This programme focuses on school-based research ideal for supporting professional learning communities and networks. Subject to validation the programme will offer the opportunity for teachers to follow specific pathways, in either Additional Learning Needs, Language and Literacy or Leadership and Management, as well as the generic route. Master of Research in Mathematics Education (MRes) Course Description: The MRes is intended to serve the needs of reflective teachers of mathematics in the early stages of their careers who are destined to become leaders within the profession. It is a research degree and is based on a blend of personal research by students and direct teaching of key knowledge and skills. Direct teaching occurs on three ‘Research Days’ that are timetabled to occur on one Saturday each term. Principles of Teaching - Level 6 The Faculty of Humanities offers a part-time programme designed to help those from many disciplines to obtain an introductory experience of teaching. The programme aims to help existing or intending full- or parttime lecturers/teachers/instructors/trainers in Further, Adult, Community or Work-based Education to gain an understanding of the principles and methods of learning and teaching. Throughout the programme emphasis will be placed on the connection between practice and theory. Introduction to Teaching - Level 4 This is an introductory programme for people interested in developing professional teaching/training skills for working with adults. The programme covers a range of introductory skills and knowledge related to teaching and learning. It provides the learner with the opportunity to put these skills into practice through observed sessions in the learner’s

Graduate Diploma in Professional Development (Education) Programme Description: The Graduate Diploma portfolio of programmes is delivered in partnership with teachers, schools and LAs. Teachers may study modules within one of the programmes: Leadership and Management; Promoting Inclusive and Special Education or Learning and Teaching. Modules are designed in partnership with serving teachers, headteachers and advisers and encourage school-focused enquiry. They are designed to enhance teachers’ professional development and, consequently, to enable school improvement. In order to gain the Graduate Diploma, students are required to study and achieve a pass grade in six modules. Students achieving a pass grade in three modules can be awarded the Graduate Certificate in Professional Development. Details of courses run in partnership with Local Authorities may be found in LA short course booklets. Module titles include: Educational Leadership and Management ● Developing Leadership ● Strategic Planning ● Management of Resources Learning, Teaching and the Curriculum ● EAL: The Developing Bilingual Learner ● Basic Skills: Overcoming Underattainment ● Assessment for Learning Strategies, and how they can contribute to raising standards in basic skills Promoting Inclusive and Special Education ● Teaching Pupils with Severe, Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties ● Teaching Pupils with Specific Learning Difficulties (Dyslexia) ● Teaching Pupils with Speech and Language Difficulties Assessment: The programme is assessed by means of teaching-related and schoolfocused assignments. Successful completion can provide a progression opportunity to the MA(Ed) programme. Entry Requirements The programme is open to teachers in Primary, Secondary and Special Schools. Foundation Degree (FdA) in Learning Support Course Description: This three-year part-time programme has been designed specifically for those who are already working to support children of all ages in a variety of education settings. It offers an opportunity for professional and personal development in the context of the workplace, and is designed to build on students’ prior knowledge and expertise in order to further develop their competence and confidence. The programme offers a comprehensive range of modules - including behaviour and learning theory, language and literacy, numeracy and ICT - as well as the opportunity to develop classroom research skills. On successful completion of the programme, students have the opportunity to top up to a full Bachelors degree.
