“Why not experiment a little bit” CHRISTOPHER WHEELDON

Sadler's Wells is the UK's leading dance house, uniquely dedicated to bringing the very best international and British dance to London audiences, including companies and choreographers that continue to develop and contemporise the language of classical ballet. Thank you for being a valuable member of the New Ballet Supporters Circle last year. Your vital contributions supported the visits by two major international ballet companies, San Francisco Ballet and the National Ballet of Canada, and a dynamic programme of some of the brightest stars in contemporary ballet including Christopher Wheeldon, Edwaard Liang, Mark Morris and Alexei Ratmansky. We aim to build a new programme of activities for the Circle every year and we hope you will consider renewing your support of the New Ballet Supporters Circle. We look forward to welcoming you to another exciting season of events and performances.

A Special Opportunity Help us to present a brand new season of international contemporary ballet in autumn 2013 beginning with Benjamin Millepied’s LA Dance Project and its London premiere, followed by Stuttgart Ballet with two different works and finally an evening of work by Christopher Wheeldon, Russell Maliphant and Edwaard Liang featuring Fang Yi-Sheu and Yuan Yuan Tan. To thank you for your support, we have planned some special events with these artists and companies for Circle members including an evening in conversation with incoming Paris Opera Ballet Director of Dance, Benjamin Millepied. LA Dance Project creates new work and revives seminal collaborations from influential dance makers. For their London premiere they will present new works by Benjamin Millepied and by choreographer and New York City Ballet dancer Justin Peck, alongside William Forsythe’s Quintett.

Stuttgart Ballet The Taming of the Shrew / Made in Germany 18 - 23 November 2013 One of the world’s leading ballet companies, Stuttgart Ballet has been at the forefront of dance creation for decades. Under the artistic direction of Reid Anderson they consistently present exciting and groundbreaking work. Made in Germany, a mixed repertory evening comprises eight UK premieres, showcasing the dancers in a wide range of work. The evening includes two works by resident choreographer Marco Goecke, one by British choreographer Douglas Lee, as well as works by Mauro Bigonzetti, Itzik Galili, Christian Spuck, Demis Volpi and Edward Clug. True to its heritage the company will also present a classic by its founder John Cranko: The Taming of the Shrew, set to a score by Domenico Scarlatti.

Liang / Maliphant / Wheeldon An evening featuring Fang-Yi Sheu and Yuan Yuan Tan 14 - 16 November 2013 This dynamic programme is a new British-Chinese cultural collaboration exploring where classical ballet meets contemporary dance. Featuring three UK premieres choreographed by Edwaard Liang and Sadler’s Wells Associate Artists Russell Maliphant and Christopher Wheeldon, the evening will showcase the extraordinary talents of Chinese prima ballerina Yuan Yuan Tan and Taiwanese virtuoso Fang-Yi Sheu.

“Maliphant is incapable of producing a movement that is not beautiful”

Finding Light, choreographed by Liang, is danced by San Francisco principal dancers Yuan Yuan Tan and Damian Smith. Wheeldon’s Five Movements, Three Repeats features a cast of four dancers. Russell Maliphant presents a new solo work – PresentPast, specially created for Fang-Yi Sheu. The evening also features two seminal works; Wheeldon’s After The Rain and Maliphant’s Two x Two.
