Life in Progress After an unparalleled career spanning 35 years, in May 2015 Sylvie Guillem will present her final dance programme at Sadler’s Wells, where she has been an Associate Artist since 2006. Sylvie is widely recognised as the greatest dancer of her generation not only for her natural grace, amazing flexibility, prodigious technique, musicality and brilliant control, but also for her intelligence, innate curiosity and steely determination, with which she has kept stretching her technical skills and expressive ability to their limits.

Her career has seen her shine on the stages of the world’s most prestigious theatres: she has mastered iconic roles in ballets by Frederick Ashton, Kenneth MacMillan and Maurice Béjart, as well as in modern pieces by William Forsythe and Mats Ek. At the same time, Sylvie has expanded her repertoire by performing adventurous and experimental works by contemporary choreographers, such as Russell Maliphant’s PUSH and Akram Khan’s Sacred Monsters. Commissioned and produced by Sadler's Wells, Life in Progress will include existing and new works by choreographers who have influenced Sylvie’s career. The production will tour across the globe, opening in Modena, Italy in March next year, having its UK premiere at Sadler’s Wells on 26 – 31 May and ending in Tokyo in December 2015. This special farewell programme will see Sylvie perform two new works: a solo by fellow Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Akram Khan and a pas de deux with dancer Emanuela Montanari from La Scala. The duet is choreographed by Russell Maliphant with lighting by award-winning lighting designer, Michael Hulls – both also Associates at Sadler’s Wells. In addition to the two new pieces, the evening will feature Mats Ek’s touching and poignant solo Bye, which was created especially for Sylvie as part of the 6000 miles away project in 2011, and Duo, a duet for male dancers by William Forsythe. Sylvie’s keen interest in entering the world of choreographers she admires and her quest to experience new ways of moving have been the driving forces behind her artistic journey and her long-term collaboration with Sadler’s Wells. Life in Progress will be the last opportunity to see Sylvie perform on our stage and the chance for us to celebrate her outstanding talent and unique contribution to dance.

The Final Sylvie Circle We are bringing together a group of individuals to support our investment in this final Sylvie Guillem production and tour in 2015. In honour of Sylvie, we will rename the theatre’s mezzanine level “The Sylvie Guillem Mezzanine” to coincide with her final production at Sadler’s Wells. To thank you for supporting this poignant moment in Sylvie’s career, and significant chapter in the history of dance, we have devised some extraordinary benefits and opportunities for the Sylvie Farewell Circle supporters.
