Tiger program muscles up A dozen lifters march to regionals TYE CHANDLER

Glen Rose powerlifting has been elevated in recent years by back-to-back state champion Jared Thames, but fans had to wonder if the program would take a step back on the heels of his graduation. At least through the regular season, the answer is a resounding “no.” The Tiger boys won all four of the meets in which they fielded a full team – including the Stephenville Meet, while two Lady Tigers will make their return to regionals. The boys had never won three meets in a season before. Genesis Funez is going back to the regional meet March 1, as she ranks third in the region in the 220-plus class. Her best total includes a squat of 375 pounds, a bench press of 150 pounds and a deadlift of 320 pounds for a total of 845 pounds. She is currently 20 pounds behind second place. “Squat is definitely Genesis’ best lift, but her deadlift is also strong,” said coach Terry Harlin. “She squatted 300 last year, and now she’s on the verge of 400, which is very impressive. Her overall total has gone up so much that she’s put herself in position to hit the automatic
state-qualifying total of 850 pounds. “She came within five pounds of that in her last qualifying meet, and I know she can elevate her squat. Plus, she has an excellent chance to finish in the top
two anyway.” Mackenzie Dahl is also going back to regionals, as she ranks 10th in the 181-pound class. Her total of 640 includes a squat of 245, a bench of 105 and deadlift of 290. She is currently 30
pounds behind sixth place. “Mackenzie has really strong legs, and the deadlift is her forte,” Harlin said. “I’m hoping she can deadlift at least 300 at regionals. She’s really coachable when it comes to technique and what
she needs to work on. Mackenzie changed weight classes, so it was hard to know what to expect this year. “She’s in a very tough weight class, so to be in the top 10 is a good achievement in itself. Our goal is
to get her in the top five and possibly bring home a medal.” Funez and Dahl are pioneers for the Glen Rose program in some ways.
