There’s no doubt, Tiger track and field lost some toptier athletes to graduation. Even so, there are viable candidates in nearly every event and so varsity spots won’t just be handed out. “I feel good about our depth,” said coach Todd Swearengin. “I think our field events have room for improvement from last year, as well as our distance
events. I have more senior guys running this year than I ever have. They will be strong in the hurdles, relays, sprints and long jump.” The Tigers return six area qualifiers with Kevin Uehlein, Martin De Los Santos, Brett Taylor, Nathan Smith, Chance Nabours and Hayden Holder. Smith was a state qualifier in the 4x400meter relay. Smith is a candidate for all relays, the triple jump, the 100-meter dash, the
200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash. “Nathan brings a lot of versatility,” the coach said. “I’m confident to put him anywhere we need him. He’s a team leader.” Uehlein could compete in the 100, 200, long jump, 4x100 or 4x200. “Kevin may run anchor on our relays,” Swearengin said. De Los Santos is a candidate for all relays, the 100 or 200.
“Martin is one of our fastest guys,” the coach said. Taylor will focus on the 800. “Brett finished strong last year and he has good endurance for that race,” the coach said. Nabours will compete in the pole vault and perhaps a sprint event. “We’ll see how his knee handles it in his return from injury,” Swearengin said. SEE RUN, C10
