2014 Fall sports preview
PROFILE: Tigers can lean on depth, experience in 2014 Quarterbacks Things sure have changed at the quarterback position since last August. Glen Rose entered the 2013 season with two quarterbacks splitting snaps, but these days it’s about senior signal caller Colten Lane. He enters the season 13th among all 3A quarterbacks in passing yards and was a second-team all-district selection as a junior. “The first thing that I look for in a quarterback is ‘what type of student is this kid, and can he be a team leader with quality character?’” said coach Tommy Dunn. “When Colten was young, he didn’t stand out physically above other guys, but he always had the character I look for. He is a great team guy. I knew he really wanted to play quarterback and had the work ethic to do it.” Dunn thinks Lane’s success can be directly attributed to his hard work. “As Colten became more comfortable, he became more confident,” the coach said. “And it filtered down to other players.” According to the coach, another key for Lane is sound fundamentals. “I’m not talking strictly about throwing, and in fact his release is probably the key thing for him to keep working on,” the coach said. “He’s very good at recognizing defenses, fronts and is able to execute the
Colten Lane reads. It looks easy, but it’s not, and he can handle the position. “He has to call the protection, and a lot of times the play, at the line of scrimmage. Then, he has to handle the snap, make his read, come up with the right decision and have good timing on his passes.” Physical limitations aren’t an issue for Lane any-
Running Backs Varsity experience is abundant for this year’s Tiger team, and the running backs and fullbacks are prime positional examples. “We have a lot of seniors,” said coach Kiel Miller. “Most of my players have varsity experience, but not all necessarily at these positions. I do think age and maturity will help us out. “At both positions, we’re pretty athletic and we can catch the ball pretty well. When you consider both positions together, it’s about as much talent as we’ve had come through in my time here.” At running back, senior Hayden Holder returns after garnering 7-3A Offensive Player of the Year honors last season. “Holder has a lot of experience, good hands, improved size, quickness, toughness and rushing ability,” Miller said. “He is a great dual threat. You just have to get him the ball any way you can. You might see him line up at running back, receiver or quarterback.” Chasen Monk returns at the position for his junior year. “Chasen got some varsity experience last year, plus he’s gotten stronger and faster,” Miller said. “Hopefully he can carry a lot of the load so that Hayden doesn’t have to take the pounding of a heavy workload. The key for him is to protect the football.”
Chasen Monk Other running back options include seniors Hayden Swearengin and Jacob Locke, junior Dakota Prcin and sophomore Kully Reynolds. “Hayden and Jacob haven’t played tailback much, but they do know the plays,” Miller said. “It remains to be seen how many carries they get. If something happens, we can rotate them in. Jacob or Dakota could

He also has improved arm strength.” Against West last season, Lane completed 17 of 20 passes for 320 yards and tied a school record with five touchdowns. Dunn thinks he can reach that remarkable level of performance once again. “I absolutely think he can play at that level multiple times this season,” the coach said. “Three of our six losses last year were to either a state finalist or semifinalist in what is now 4A, so Colten has developed a toughness and competitiveness after facing that adversity. Overall, he will be able to put us in the best position for any given play. I think his touchdownto-interception ratio will be large when it’s all said and done.” Sophomore Ethan Hartman is second on the depth chart. “Ethan is still just a sophomore, which people forget sometimes,” Dunn said of the all-district receiver. “He’s been around the game his whole life as a coach’s son, plus his dad (Erik) was a good quarterback. That’s going to rub off on Ethan, and he has a lot of talent with good size, strength and speed. It’s just a matter see QB, 25
take the Carlin Linnabery role from last year, as far as a fast guy taking the outside runs. “Swearengin and Monk are more likely to provide power runs inside the tackles. Kully had a really good offseason. For a young back, he finds the running lanes pretty well. He’s tough and finishes runs upfield. ” At fullback, Trey Yocham returns for his senior season. “Trey has varsity experience at fullback in our scheme,” Miller said. “He will probably play more defense than offense, but he knows the offense very well. That could mean he gets more fullback snaps early in the season. “He dislocated his shoulder early last season and it limited his snaps, but now he’s healthy. Trey is our smallest fullback, but he’s a good blocker, he catches well and has the most experience.” Seniors Preston Shuffield and Sawyer Murphy are solid fullback candidates. “Preston is new to varsity, but Sawyer played some varsity fullback back in Michigan,” Miller said. “Preston and Sawyer both catch the ball real well and can move for bigger guys. We can drop them down to tight end if we run a tight end set and not have to substitute anybody. “They pack a punch, and I’m hoping they’ll block

PROFILE: Tigers can lean on depth, experience in 2014 Receivers Offensive Line Coach Erik Hartman has a number of receiving options he feels great about, and that’s just the way he likes it. “There is a lot of competition at the receiver position this year, because this is the best depth we’ve had in my time here,” Hartman said. “If any starter suffers an injury, there are guys who can come in and we won’t miss a beat. Like most of the team, my guys didn’t have much varsity experience last year and now a lot of them have taken varsity snaps. We’ve been able to teach so many things a lot quicker this year, so the learning curve for young guys has had to be tremendous to keep up with everybody. “This group will work hard on blocking and try to catch every pass. They’re smart, which allows me to move them around.” At inside receiver, sophomore Ethan Hartman returns after receiving second-team all-district honors last year. “Ethan has good hands, but the key is his maturity level has risen,” said the coach. “Last year, he had to learn a lot really fast as a freshman. He reads the secondary well now during his routes.”

Ethan Hartman Senior Alex Cocita, junior Drayton Williams and junior Stone Costello also play the position. “Alex will play a lot on defense, but we can use him as a speedster to stretch the field,” Hartman see WR, 25
The outlook has arguably improved for just about every Tiger position group, and perhaps nowhere more than the offensive line. “Last year at this time, we had a lot of uncertainty on the offensive line,” said coach Terry Harlin. “We didn’t have any senior linemen coming back, and only R.J. (Darch) had varsity experience. You’d probably have to call it a team weakness for us last year, especially early on, but it’s paying great dividends now that our whole line has at least 12 games of varsity experience. “We probably have as much experience and depth now as we’ve ever had in my eight seasons here. We return five starters plus two others with significant playing time.” The coach said his position group is so much farther along than it was 12 months ago. “The kids know what’s going on, so we jumped right back into where we left off last year,” Harlin said. “I’m not having to spend a lot of time teaching schemes and plays, so I’m really optimistic about things. This group is strong, plus they all run pretty well. They’re a fun group to coach and are pretty football savvy.”

PROFILE: Tigers can lean on depth, experience in 2014 Other options at left end include seniors Cordova said. “I’m excited to see what he can Defensive Line Dalton Gould and Alex Navarrete. do. He is strong and fast, so gaining experience Tiger football appears to be strong in the trenches this season on both sides of the ball, which could pay big dividends. Coach Fred Cordova loves the pieces he has to work with on the defensive line. “The experience my guys have entering this season is a big plus from last year,” Cordova said. “Going into the first (2013) game, I had two guys who’d never played varsity football before and a converted linebacker. Early on, that inexperience showed. Now, I have two guys who played from week one on last year, plus a guy like (R.J.) Darch with some experience to go with size, strength and speed. “Our mistakes are a lot less frequent now. I feel good about the improvements this group has made since last season. They are hungry, and we have a good rotation at each position.” At left end, R.J. Darch returns for his senior season. “R.J. is the leader of our defensive line,” Cordova said. “His pass rush is good, he has a good motor and his energy is contagious to the other guys. He is driven to do well for the team.”
“Dalton has varsity experience, and he ran the anchor leg on the sprint relay team last spring, so anytime you have a guy like that on the defensive line he can be explosive,” Cordova said. “He also has some strength, and I think he can really help us. We are going to rotate guys in so frequently on the defensive line that it doesn’t really matter who is starting. Alex is deceptive because he’s small for a defensive lineman, but he knows the position well, is very aggressive and he’s quick to really shoot the gaps and get to the ball.” At nose guard, junior Miguel Barraza returns after earning second-team all-district honors last season. “Miguel’s situation is very similar to Braxton (Barrios),” Cordova said. “He’s a good kid who battled back from an early injury last year and kept getting better. He was significantly better in our last several games. He does a good job of holding down the middle, and he often commands a double team.” Sophomore Matt Willis and senior Drannon Brewer are also nose guard options. “Matt played a bit of defensive line last year, but he was mainly an offensive lineman,”
will really help him. Drannon is a big, strong kid. He does a good job of anchoring down the middle and plays with good leverage.” At right end, junior Braxton Barrios returns after earning second-team all-district honors last season. “Braxton’s strength is a key for him,” the coach said. “He got comfortable in the scheme as we went along last year, and he had a great offseason. He has a high motor and flies around.” Other options at right end are seniors Sawyer Murphy and Heath Nicholson. Both players have varsity experience. “Sawyer is another big, strong kid,” Cordova said. “He’s had to learn the scheme (after transferring from Michigan), and once he soaks everything in I think he’ll play even faster. Heath is an explosive guy who can be disruptive and a quality pass rusher. “He may not get a ton of reps, but in third-down pass rush situations I think he can push the pocket. We have a history of quality powerlifters being quality defensive linemen. I’m excited about the depth I have, and my expectations are pretty high.”
Linebackers
Hayden Swearengin
The outlook for the linebacker corps is good in 2014, as some accomplished and improved players return. “We have a lot of experience going into the season with three guys who have played significant snaps, although a couple have changed positions,” said coach Todd Swearengin. “We have competition at every position on defense, and that’s good. Last year, we didn’t know who could play in August, but this year we know a lot of them can heading into the season. “These linebackers understand our system and how they fit, so that’s a strength, along with knowledge of the game. Inside, I think we’ll be bigger and stronger physically than we’ve been recently.” At middle linebacker, senior Angel Amezcua returns. “I think (Angel) has really improved his strength and put on some weight, while still keeping his burst,” Swearengin said. “He knows what I look for in a middle linebacker, and he’s embraced a leadership role.” Junior Matt Branham and sophomore Kully Reynolds provide depth at the position. “Matt is a quick player with strength,” the coach said. “He’s very smart and coachable, so you don’t

have to tell him something twice. Kully is the young pup, but he’s eager and as coachable a player as we have. “He makes up for not being the biggest guy with his smarts on the field. He has a low center of gravity, which makes him harder to block.” Regarding weakside linebacker, junior Calen Ballesteros returns after logging some varsity snaps last season. “Calen is one of our strongest players, plus he brings more size than I’ve had at his position in awhile,” Swearengin said. “He knows the game and is pretty athletic.” Junior Stone Costello also plays the position, while Branham and Reynolds are other weakside options. “Stone has strong legs and he is very good at blitzing,” the coach said. “He just has a knack for getting through (to the quarterback), so we’ll utilize him that way.” At strongside linebacker, senior Hayden Swearengin returns after a second-team all-district season. He has transitioned from weakside linebacker. “Hayden has football smarts, and he’s always around the football,” said coach James Evans. “His dad being a coach at the position has a big impact on him, in terms of Hayden understanding the defense and enabling him to direct traffic out there
for other players.” Senior Trey Yocham also returns after earning second-team all-district honors. He has transitioned from inside linebacker. “Trey caught on quickly to the move from inside to outside linebacker,” Evans said. “He improves every day and he has a nose for the football, too. He’s going to be a good player this season. The main changes for him were covering a greater variety of players and giving support off the edge.” Senior Sam Strother is another returning linebacker. “Sam played a lot last year at the position, and he knows it well,” Evans said. “With Sam’s body type, he has the ability to cover some taller players well. He is another one who is always around the ball. Sam breaks on the ball well in the passing game.” Seniors Preston Shuffield and Bradlee Ingram are new to varsity. “Preston has good size and strength to hit well, but he can also cover,” Evans said. “I see consistent improvement, because Preston gets more comfortable as he gets more reps. I think he can become an impact player. Bradlee has a great frame to play outside linebacker. “He’s physical, and all five of my guys are athletic. I also love that they’re all seniors. They’re more mature and you can count on them for leadership.”

PROFILE: Tigers can lean on depth, experience in 2014 Defensive Backs Special Teams The defensive secondary returns fewer players than most position groups for Tiger football this year, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be a weak point for the team. “All of our cornerbacks are small, but they play hard, are pretty quick and they’re smart,” said coach Keith Wheeler. Alex Cocita is a returning starter at left cornerback for his senior season. “Alex did a good job last season, but I think he breaks on the ball better now to get interception chances or at least knock balls down,” Wheeler said. Also at left cornerback, senior Cody Halcom has moved up after playing the position on JV and senior Darrion Crawford, who transferred from Grandview, enters his first varsity season as well. “Cody’s strength has improved since last season,” Wheeler said. “I don’t think receivers will be able to manhandle him, plus he can take on blocks. For (Crawford), it’s all about how well he learns the defense. “He’ll be able to help us. He’s quick and he

Some football teams can be accused of not placing enough emphasis on special teams, but Glen Rose coaches are quick to mention they hold that phase of the game in high regard. “I thought we did pretty well with our special teams last year,” said coach Kiel Miller. “Of course, we always could’ve done better – we missed a couple of field goals and extra points. As far as our blocking, tackling and snapping, I thought we did a solid job. We practice special teams a lot.” Although special teams coaches mentioned specific players, Miller pointed out the lineup can be a fluid situation throughout the season. “Until you line up and go against somebody full speed on special teams, it’s really hard to tell how good we’ll be,” he said. “The key is to get the right kids in the right spots, and I would also say a lot of the key special teams faces are likely to change over the course of the season. Injuries and playing time on offense and defense – a lot of that dictates roles on special teams. All you can do until you go into the first game is

here is much work to be done, but Sandy Langford expects her first season in Glen Rose to last a long time. Lady Tiger volleyball went 26-14 last season and advanced to the area round of the playoffs before losing to Springtown. A solid campaign to be sure, but said result would be unacceptable this year. “Our goal is always to become a state champion,” Langford said. “We have more hitters than I’ve ever had on a team, as far as girls who can just put the ball away. If we can continue to learn the game and run the system, we should have a chance. “At the state level, there will be teams that can match our athletes. It all comes down to work ethic and who wants it more.” Langford wants to make the most of her tall, athletic roster. “We’re going to run a quick offense this year,” she said. “As many hitters as we have, we’re going to play as fast as the girls can handle. n pursuit of a sixth-straight playoff berth, the Walnut Springs Hornets are already much farther along than they were 12 months ago. “We want to keep up that playoff tradition, and the kids expect to make it,” said coach Tim Trotter. “They know what it takes to get there, and so a lot of them are putting in extra work to get better. I can tell they are excited, and if they want to be good we will be.” In August of 2013, Trotter had 10 play-

ers on his roster. Now, he has five returning starters on each side of the ball. “This year, we’re just fine tuning in practice,” he said. “The guys already know the plays. We could’ve played a game the first day of practice, in terms of them being mentally ready. Last year, we weren’t ready to play, even by the first game. “Physically, we played with a lot of energy in our first scrimmage (against Gholson). We’re faster, stronger and have more football smarts this year across the board.” With 13 available players, practice can be more productive this year. “Last August, there were days we had to practice with less than six guys on defense, which makes it difficult,” Trotter said. “The kids are more committed this year, so that isn’t an issue.” One would think the move from being a small Div. I school to a large Div. II would make life easier for the 1A Hornets. Not so fast. “The move to Div. II actually makes it a lot harder for us in the playoffs,” Trotter said. “There’s a chance we could face the three top-ranked teams in the state in our region. But we are a Div. II school. We just need to be who we are.” Every team needs player leadership, and
Trotter has a couple of upperclassmen he counts on. “My quarterback Noel Chavez is always positive, and I’ve never seen a day where he didn’t work hard,” Trotter said. “Trenton (Trotter) has also been doing a good job this year of leading by example, showing up early to get to work.” The Hornets were a team driven by offense in 2013, and it got the job done more often than not. “Our passing and running games both have to be good,” Trotter said. “We have weapons, so if injuries don’t hurt us, we should be okay. We have five guys without varsity experience, but those younger kids are developing and will be able to help us. In our first scrimmage, my younger guys scored nine of our 18 touchdowns.” Trotter knows his defense will have to take a step forward from last season. “We have to tackle better, because it was our weakness last year,” he said. “We’re light for the most part, so it’s hard to get off of blocks. Defense is where we really have to improve.” Looking to the roster, senior Seth Rodriguez garnered first-team all-district honors at receiver and defensive lineman last year. “Seth is a great route runner and he catches the ball very well,” Trotter said. Junior Carlos Ramirez was a first-team all-district spreadback and a first-team linebacker last season. “Carlos brings the threat of pass or run, so we run a lot of option with him and keep
defenses off-balance,” Trotter said. Freshman Fernando Vara is slated to play end on both sides of the ball. “Fernando is going to be a good blocking
end and a good defensive end,” the coach said. see HORNETS, 23

Sophomore Eduardo Enriquez is also set to play end on offense and defense. “Eduardo will be a good offensive end and do well as a run Cristian blocker,” TrotGranados ter said. Sophomore RB/CB/QB/K Junior Noel Chavez was a first-team quarterback and first-team cornerback last season. “Noel lead blocks really well for Carlos and throws pretty well,” Trotter said. “He calls all the plays and always keeps his composure. He puts up good tackle numbers and is the best cover corner I’ve ever had because he’s always in good position.” Senior Trenton Trotter was a first-team tight end and a first-team defensive end last season. He is one of the Hornets’ two larger players at 6’4” and 220 pounds. “Trenton is a great run blocker and a big target when we need a short-yardage catch to get a first down or a touchdown,” the coach said. Freshman Alex Villareal will play running back and defensive end. “Alex is a head hunter who likes to hit,” Trotter said. “He will be an asset, even as a freshman, and he has a good attitude.” Junior Jakob Vara is slated to play end on offense and nose guard on defense. “Jakob is a nose guard and he does a good job of pressuring the quarterback,” Trotter said. Freshman Miguel Ponce will play running

“He can also play safety.” Junior Colby Townley was a second-team all-district center last season.
“Colby is a good, smart center,” Trotter said. “He knows how to get open and is a good receiver for first-down situations. He’s a good blocker.” Freshman Ben Muniz could play running back, center, nose guard or middle linebacker. “Ben is a real versatile player who can play where we need him,” Trotter said. Senior Oscar Ruiz, the other “big” Hornet, was a first-team nose guard last season. “Oscar is a great nose guard who holds up the middle and is hard to block,” the coach said. “He gives us a different style of running back at 260 pounds when teams get used to Carlos counting on his speed at 150 pounds.” Sophomore Cristian Granados earned first-team all-district honors at kicker and second-team honors at defensive back last season. “Cristian can play every position, and he’s very smart,” Trotter said. “He’s a good quarterback, a great kicker, he runs the ball well, can play end and he’ll probably start at cornerback.” The Hornets are the favorites in 14-1A Div. II according to Texas Football magazine, but Trotter expects challenges. “I see our district being really competitive,” he said. “I think Oglesby will be much improved, Iredell should be pretty strong led by three athletic seniors – if their younger guys step up, and I expect Jonesboro to reload from last year and be real good. Iredell and Jonesboro are probably the toughest challenges.” The playoff road may be difficult once they get there, but the Hornets have months to keep improving. “The key will be to win our district and not face (No. 1) Richland Springs in bi-district,” Trotter said. “I’d rather play them later on. If we all stay together and stay healthy, it should be a good year.”

We’re getting on the ground a lot in practice and trying to simulate game situations.” First-team all-district selections Kelsey Potter and Meredith Odom return for their senior seasons, while senior Cheyenne Lytle was a first-team performer in Cleburne last year. Potter and Lytle will both play outside hitter and defensive specialist, while Odom will be a middle blocker. “Potter can jump out of the gym, which helps her court vision,” Langford said. “I think she will get better at hitting to the open spot. Meredith fights for it, and she gets so excited at the end of a play. She wants to win badly. “Cheyenne just wants to hammer the ball down her opponent’s throat. She’s a power hitter going 100 miles per hour, so we want her set as perfectly as possible.” Sophomore setter Sophie Bozarth was the district’s Newcomer of the Year last season. “Sophie strives for perfection,” Langford

2014 Fall sports preview said. “She is so concerned about getting her hitters a ball right where they want it. She is unselfish and never complains about a bad pass.” Juniors Olivia Banz and Madi Gibson were second-team selections last season. Banz will play middle blocker, while Gibson will play right-side hitter. “Olivia is so coachable and she just wants to please you, so she does everything she can,” Langford said. “Madi is a blocking whiz. She can get up (high), plus her positive leadership makes a noticeable difference when she steps on the court. She’s uplifting.” Senior Madison Morrow will play rightside hitter and outside hitter, while senior Lexi Crabtree will play defensive specialist. “Madison works hard, and she’s a good blocker,” Langford said. “Not much gets past her. Lexi is good defensively, and she is learning more about the game, which is helping her get more comfortable on back row.” Senior Kalli Crabtree will play setter, while senior Brenna Ibarra will play defensive specialist. “Kalli is doing a nice job of setting,” the coach said. “She also brings some senior

leadership to an important position. Brenna is quick on back row. She isn’t scared to fall and go after the ball.” Junior Sabrina Watson will play defensive specialist, while junior Brynna Taylor will play middle blocker. “Sabrina is getting good on back row,” Langford said. “She’s learning to read the ball and is getting on the ground. She’s so quick to have good range. “Brynna is coming around on hitting and blocking. She’s doing a good job.” Langford calls 11-3A the “toughest district in the state.” “Peaster is a young team, but they have big hitters and so does Brock,” she said. “I expect Grandview to be athletic, and I think the district will be between us four. Our girls are learning a lot of new things now, and I think we can get to a district championship level.” Most of the varsity players have experienced the joy of a playoff victory. “It’s very important for these girls to have tasted that success and created expectations for themselves,” Langford said. “They expect more than advancing to area. It’s going to come down to heart and desire to see how far we go this year.”

WR
At right outside receiver, seniors Jayton Dillard and Cody Halcom are options. “We’re expecting Dillard to be a key offensive guy,” Hartman said. “He has been a great possession
receiver for us in recent months and is running good routes with great effort, plus he has excellent speed. Cody is a guy we expect to do a good job when he’s called upon. He has good hands.”
When the aforementioned Williams plays outside receiver, he’ll line up on the right side. At left outside receiver, Sam Strother returns for his senior season. “Sam is a playmaker who always seems to get open and make tough catches,” Hartman said. “He is in position to have a strong season.” Other options on the left side include seniors Chance Nabours, Darrion Crawford, Brett Taylor and Taylor Beckwith. “Chance is a playmaker as well,” Hartman said. “He can play inside receiver, too, if we need it. He will play a lot of defense, but Chance could easily be a starting receiver if needed. He has great hands and gets open. “It’s tough to come in as a senior and try to learn all of our offense, but Crawford does have good speed and good hands. We’ll have some plays for him. “Taylor and Beckwith are coming up from the JV and they’re in the mix. Brett has excellent hands. I think when those guys are called upon, they’ll be able to perform, and they are both taller guys like Sam.”
“Shane has the size you look for in an offensive lineman, because he’s tall for a 3A lineman with the weight,” the coach said. “He can really move when he wants to, and like R.J. there could be a game when Shane dominates to allow us to control the ball. I see Dawson, Shane and Jonathan (Rios) probably all playing equally between the two guard spots.” At center, junior Reece Nickell returns. Willis also provides depth at center. “Reece is playing center for a couple of reasons,” Harlin said. “First, he can snap the ball well consistently, which is an underrated skill. Second, he’s very intelligent and football savvy, which enables him to make the calls and see that everyone is on the same page. Reece has embraced the position.” At right guard, senior Jonathan Rios returns after a second-team all-district campaign. “Jonathan will run through a brick wall for you,” the coach said. “He is experienced and he’s a great run blocker, especially on the edge. He remembers everything I’ve ever told him and he’s smart.” Other options include junior Miguel Barraza and senior Christian Barrios. “Miguel has all the tools and is starter-caliber, but he’s a great defensive player,” Harlin said. “He
does give us quality depth. Christian is back with us after missing a couple of seasons, and he can be solid backup.” Senior Heath Nicholson returns at right tackle. “Heath’s best attribute is obviously his strength (as a powerlifting state qualifier), plus now that he has
12 games of experience he’s gotten so much better to be able to capitalize on his power,” Harlin said. “He is more confident and will be a solid tackle for us.” Junior Braxton Barrios provides depth. “I would say the exact same thing about Braxton that I said about Miguel,” Harlin said.
Continued from 4 said. “We originally looked at Drayton as an outside receiver, because you can motion him in and he can be treated as a running back. He has pretty good speed and hands. We decided to let him earn some double duty at inside receiver, too. “He’s smart, so I think he can be a swingman for us. Stone’s hands have gotten so much better in the past year. He’s going to come up from the JV and be an asset for us.” Although he is primarily considered a running back, senior Hayden Holder is another inside receiver option. “Holder is a guy who can catch it in the open field and it’s hard to catch him,” Hartman said. “He has good speed, good hands and is a great asset at the receiver position.”
OL
Continued from 4 of defense, too. He is a strong senior leader vocally and with his actions, plus he has a great attitude. In terms of being both a pass protector and a run blocker, I think R.J. could be a dominant player because he treats every snap like a personal battle.” Sophomore Matt Willis provides depth at the position. “Matt now has some experience, so he’s not the new kid on the block like last year,” Harlin said. “We have big expectations for him, and he’ll play a significant role. He’s a smart kid with size and much improved strength. I’m excited to see what he can do.” At left guard, Dawson Matheny returns for his senior season. “Dawson got a lot of experience last year splitting time at left guard with Shane (Moore),” Harlin said. “He looks really good right now, in terms of where he’s at physically and his level of play. He’s strong, fast and savvy.” Moore also returns at the position as a senior.
QB
Continued from 3 of him getting a firm grasp of all the things that we throw at a quarterback, and I have no doubt he can, but it’s nice to groom him while he learns from Colten.” Senior Hayden Holder is third on the depth chart.
Thursday, August 28, 2014 | 25
“Hayden is a different type of quarterback,” Dunn said. “He may play the position some this year, because he’s a great athlete and you want the ball in his hands. If he’s there, he’ll run more and just make plays.” With his starter set, it’s one less thing for the head coach to worry about. “We always like competition at every position, but Colten definitely deserves to be the starter,” Dunn said. “Having him locked in does make it a lot less complicated.”

Continued from 6 our better linebackers and defensive backs,” he said. “One guy can get out of his lane and allow the returner to break free. We may be looking to guys like Jacob Locke, Jayton Dillard, Calen Ballesteros and Drayton Williams.” For the punt return unit, Miller said the prime Tigers will likely be offensive players except for the returners themselves. “Our safeties are likely candidates to be the return men with guys like Chasen Monk, Williams, Dillard and Chance Nabours,” he said. “They have to show us they’ll catch the ball.” Miller feels very good about his options at deep snapper. “Trey Yocham did most of it last year, and he’ll

2014 Fall sports preview be in the mix,” Miller said. “Nabours was out last year, but he’s an excellent deep snapper and will probably be a key guy there. Sawyer Murphy is a good deep snapper with experience, while Reece Nickell does a good job of snapping on field goals. Bad deep snapping is what really gets noticed.” Despite the departure of three-year starting kicker Martin De Los Santos, Miller feels good about the position. “Alex Cocita has taken over at kicker, and he’s kicking the fire out of the ball,” Miller said. “He looks really good on kickoffs, as well as extra points and field goals. He went to a kicking camp, and it definitely has helped. His field goal accuracy and range are improving. “He is kicking some of his kickoffs to the end zone, plus he gets a lot of air under the ball when he does kick short. It’s realistic he could make a 40-yard field goal in a game. I’ve learned that there are no automatic extra points in high
school because a lot of kickers like Alex play another primary position, but I hope it can become nearly automatic for him.” Azahel Herrera is the No. 2 kicker. “Azahel worked a lot over the summer to improve, and he’s become our second kicker,” Miller said. “On kickoffs, he will kick the ball shorter with air under it. You never know when he might be called upon to take over the job.” Coach Erik Hartman mentioned a deep depth chart at punter. “Jacob Locke looks like our starting punter, and he has the strongest leg,” Hartman said. “Ethan Hartman has worked at punter and has shown consistent placement. Cocita has a strong leg for it, and he’s working on his drop. “Colten Lane and Hayden Holder are also options. We’re just looking for consistency and those guys being able to place the ball where we want it.”
Hartman expects good things from the kick return unit. “We are using a similar approach to recent seasons, and it seems to work well,” he said. “We have some speed on the front line of kick return, and we’re looking for guys to make quality blocks. Guys like Dillard, Hartman, Dakota Prcin, Monk and Holder are all candidates as return men.” Coach James Evans oversees the punt coverage unit. “I have a good group of guys on that unit,” he said. “They catch on quickly and they hustle. I just need them to execute their assignments and not give up a big play. Athletes like Dillard, Sam Strother and Nabours need to get down the field and make a tackle. “Locke is the punter and he’s been doing a good job getting downfield. Hartman is the personal protector.”
played outside linebacker. “Locke has improved on his overall physical play,” Wheeler said. “He will really come up and hit you, but he also covers well. He is a quick learner to handle the position change. “Dillard’s coverage skills have improved. He has a lot of experience against the run and covering short passes, but I think he’ll cover the deep ball well, too.”
Senior Thomas Watson and junior Dakota Prcin are also options at right cornerback. Watson played the position on JV last year, while Prcin played JV outside linebacker. “Thomas missed most of his JV season last year due to injury, and he worked hard to get back,” Wheeler said. “It’s big for him to be healthy now and able to contribute. He knows where he’s supposed to be. “Dakota has good speed. He is still learning the position, and some varsity experience will be big for him. He has talent.” Safeties are in a similar situation in terms of their offensive workload dictating how many defensive snaps they receive. Sophomore Ethan Hartman is transitioning to free safety from varsity outside linebacker last year. “Ethan has good size and he’s athletic,” said coach Sam Schuelke. “He’s still learning the position, but when he is in the right place, good things happen for us.” Also at free safety are junior Chasen Monk and senior Taylor Beckwith. Monk logged some varsity snaps at safety last year, while Beckwith has moved up from the JV. “Chasen knows all the coverages, so he’s not facing the learning curve most of the other guys are,” Schuelke said. “He has a comfort level being out there on Friday nights. His coverage has improved, but he’s best at coming up in run support. “Taylor is going to give you everything he’s got on
every play. I like his energy when he gets on the field, and I think he’ll make the most of his opportunities.” At strong safety, senior Chance Nabours has rebounded from an injury that kept him out of action as a junior. “Chance is pretty athletic, but the key is he has a knack for being around the ball,” the coach said. “That’s an important trait for a safety, and it allows him to make plays.” Senior Brett Taylor and junior Drayton Williams enter their first varsity seasons with the Tigers at the strong safety position. “Brett is a really solid player,” Schuelke said. “He does a good job of tackling, is usually in the right place with his coverage and he works hard. When we plug him into the game, I have complete confidence in him because he doesn’t have any obvious weaknesses. “Drayton is an exciting addition because he’s a good athlete who will improve as he learns more about our scheme. He is really coachable.” Senior Hayden Holder, who earned 7-3A SecondTeam honors at safety last season, is also an option at strong safety. As the team’s best offensive player, his role on defense remains to be seen. He actually primarily played outside linebacker last season, but gained significant varsity safety experience two seasons ago. “Hayden is a complete, athletic safety when he’s in there,” Schuelke said. “He’s very smart, real confident, will take charge and he’s a playmaker.”

“Calen played a little bit of varsity fullback last year,” Miller said. “He is working on his receiving. Calen is a defense-first guy, but he’s an option. He’s strong with increased muscle and speed. “If we needed to put (Amezcua) in, he knows enough to get the job done at fullback. He’s real strong and had a great offseason.”
Continued from 3 well. Sawyer has a lot of strength.” Junior Calen Ballesteros and senior Angel Amezcua are also fullback options.
