BANGS, TX – SMALL TOWN USA FOR A DAY OR FOR A LIFETIME Letter From The Mayor They say home is where the heart is. And from my childhood memories of spending summers and holidays here while growing up in West Texas to the recent memories of eagerly waiting for the first gallon of recycled water to start filling our 3 million gallon pond or of throwing out the first pitch at the new Bangs Event Center last spring my heart seems to have always been in Bangs, Texas. Let me invite you visit Bangs and see for yourself the warmth that comes with living where neighbors still look out for one another with the same care and compassion of yesteryear. Whether it’s for a day or for a lifetime, our little town is a special place. Mayfest - our annual festival the first Saturday each May – is a pilgrimage to town where our population doubles for a day. In its 21st year, it regularly rivals Bangs High School’s homecoming for the largest local event each year. And the Bangs Event Center was the scene of last to this year’s 9 and under state baseball tournament just a season after that first pitch. We have a tremendous school system with top notch athletic and academic teams year in and year out. Our city slogan is Bangs, TX – Small Town USA, and whether you’re looking for a place to spend a day or spend a lifetime, our community’s spirit backs up those words. We’re minutes away from world class hunting and fishing and our housing is very affordable.

Visit and enjoy Bangs. You’ll be glad you did. Sincerely,

Eric Bishop Mayor of Bangs

“Feels like home” is Brownwood’s trademark phrase — and for good reason. Brownwood, and all of Brown County, boasts a little taste of everything to entertain visitors and newcomers alike. More than 50 community events take place throughout the calendar year, including the Brown County Rodeo, RiverFest, Heartland Cruisers Rod Run, Pioneer Days and Christmas Under the Stars just to name a few. There are also several destinations to visit including the Gordon Wood Hall of Champions, Martin and Frances Lehnis Railroad Museum, Brown County Museum of History and Camp Bowie Aquatic Center. Brownwood still boasts a vibrant downtown area with the Lyric Theatre as the centerpiece, as well as the Brownwood Coliseum and Depot Civic and Cultural Center. Nestled just 22 miles from the geographic center of Texas, Brownwood can also be found on the Wildflower Trail, Texas Forts Trail, the Great Texas Wildlife Trail and the Way Out Wineries Trail. Located a few miles north of town is Lake Brownwood, which features a shoreline of nearly 100 miles and 537 acres available for recreational activity — including hiking, biking, camping, fishing, swimming, boating and water skiing. Additional outdoor activities include golf courses and hunting seasons throughout the year. Staying in Brownwood and Brown County provides both visitors and residents the opportunity to take in as much entertainment as desired, or relax at a comfortable place. The choice is yours! — Brownwood Bulletin

Brown County

Nestled in the Center of Texas BROWNWOOD Brown County Seat Population: 19,288

• Located on the Pecan Bayou at the intersection of U.S. Highways 67, 84, 183 and 377, Farm Road 2524, and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in south central Brown County. •The city and the county are named for Henry Stevenson Brown. • Residents enjoy a low cost of living that is 21.8 percent below the U.S. Average. • In the fall of 1940, as part of the military buildup associated with the peacetime draft, a military-training installation, Camp Bowie, was built to the south and southwest of town. The camp eventually became the largest military training center in Texas, and had a major impact on the city of Brownwood. By December 1940 the 13,500 workers at the camp exceeded the 1940 population of the city; by March 1941 Brownwood’s population was counted at 22,479, and by some estimates the wartime population eventually reached considerably more than 50,000. With the closing of Camp Bowie in 1946, Brownwood’s wartime gains began to slip away. Attempts to sustain the growth rate of the war years were blocked by the seven-year drought of the late 1940s and early 1950s and its deleterious impact on the agribusiness of the region. In spite of the postwar depression, the city numbered 20,140 inhabitants, 71 percent of the county population, in 1950. Brownwood’s population declined during the 1950s by more than 15 percent to 16,974 in 1960, and has remained relatively static over the next 40 years, with 17,368 inhabitants in 1970, 19,203 in 1980, 18,387 in 1990, and 19,288 in 2010.

Lake Brownwood

Lake Brownwood is an artificial lake on the Pecan Bayou and Jim Ned Creek, 70 miles southeast of Abilene and about 10 miles north of Brownwood. The surface area is 6,490 acres with a drainage area of 1,535 square miles. The lake’s normal capacity is 118,900 acre-feet with a maximum capacity of 448,200 acrefeet. The spillway elevation is 1,425 feet. Work on the dam began in 1931 and the deliberate impoundment of water began in July 1933. A survey of the watershed of the lake revealed that two years of normal rainfall were needed before the lake would fill, but on July 3, 1932, torrential rains caused Pecan Bayou and Jim Ned Creek to pour flooding waters into the lake, filling it to a level of 150,000 acre-feet and covering more than 7,000 acres of land in six hours. With nearly 100 miles of shoreline and 537 acres available for recreation, activities include picnicking, camping, hiking (2.5 miles of hiking trails and a 0.5-mile nature trail), boating (motors allowed), water skiing (jet skis allowed), fishing, nature study, swimming (in an unsupervised swimming area), and bird-watching. For additional information, visit tpwd.texas.gov/stateparks/lake-brownwood. Lake Brownwood is also home to Lake Brownwood State Park, located at 200 State Highway Park Road 15. Turn right at the stop sign (the name changes to Spillway Rd.). Follow this road 0.4 mile to the dam. Park by the historical marker and follow the short, wooded trails to the lake. Return to Spillway Rd. and drive to the end of the dam. On the right is the parking lot for lake patrol. Park on this hilltop for a cliff-side view of the lake and the spillway. The short, wooded trails south of the

dam are densely vegetated with hackberry, pecan and some oak. Eastern Phoebe, Belted Kingfisher and White-eyed Vireo occur here. Look for herons and egrets yearround, and in the winter look for gulls, ducks and terns. The oak-mesquite brush can be productive for birds. Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Western and Eastern Kingbirds and Scissor-tailed Flycatcher can also be seen. Lake Brownwood State Park: The park is located 16 miles northwest of Brownwood on TX 279. Take TX 279 to PR 15, then head east on PR 15 for 6 miles. Located on Lake Brownwood, a 7,300-surface-acre reservoir, the park offers a variety of outdoor activities, camping and lodging. Visitors can enjoy an atmosphere of rustic beauty and tranquility with miles of shoreline where wildflowers, White-tailed Deer, ducks, raccoons, armadillos, squirrels and a variety of birds can be observed in a natural setting. Many structures in use today were constructed with timber and native rock found in the park by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the early 1930s.

Located on a residential main campus in Brownwood, and at extension centers elsewhere in the state, the university is affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas. Howard Payne was ranked eighth in the Western region of the United States among schools offering a great value according to “America’s Best Colleges,” published by U.S. News & World Report. Howard Payne regularly appears in the publication’s rankings among the best values in higher education. Enrollment at HPU averages 1,400 students with a student to faculty ratio of 12:1, which guarantees a close interaction between the professors and students. The university offers students more than 50 majors, minors and pre-professional programs to choose from in the six schools — Science and Math, Business, Christian Studies, Education, Music, Fine Arts and Humanities. The student life at Howard Payne includes more than 50 student organizations including honor societies, service and social clubs, departmental groups, athletics and intramurals. Professors, staff members and many students are integral members of the Brown County community, serving on boards and in a variety of volunteer positions in churches and organizations. The university also elevates the cultural and educational experience for residents by welcoming the public to its variety of musical, theatrical and educational programs and seminars held throughout the year.

Texas State Technical College 305 Booker St., Brownwood, TX 76801 Phone: (325) 643-5987 www.tstc.edu/campuses/brownwood Texas State Technical College-West Texas is a two-year, state-funded higher education institution in Abilene, Breckenridge, Brownwood and Sweetwater offering associate’s degrees and certificates through its traditional programs as well as customized training in critical and emerging technologies from its “corporate college.” The Brownwood TSTC center opened in 1992 in a 13,000-square-foot renovated grocery store, employed five full-time staff members and had 71 students enrolled. Today, the five-building complex encompasses more than 43,000 square feet with an expansion recently completed in the facilities that are now owned by TSTC. More than 300 students are enrolled in a typical semester here, and Brownwood has been a leader in the increase in student enrollment among West Texas TSTC centers over recent years. With an increasing demand for technicians in health and science fields, TSTC West Texas has health and science programs to prepare professionals in fields such as chemical dependency counseling; emergency medical technology/paramedic; environmental science technology; health information technology and vocational nursing. In the global economy, the need for high-speed communication systems is growing constantly. TSTC West Texas offers training in computer network systems and administration; computer science technology; and digital imaging and design technology. In addition to offering associate’s degrees in a variety of fields, TSTC also works extensively through its “corporate college” with local industries, economic develop-

ment entities and workforce agencies to improve the skills of employees to keep up with technological advancements. The Brownwood center expanded into the former social service offices, and has also expanded its offerings for short-term community education courses that include computer programs, photography, bookkeeping, customer relations, professional cashier, welding for the general public and bank teller training. Offerings vary, as they are tailored to the needs of students and local employers. Visit www.tstc.edu for more information.

Civic Organizations

Civic organizations are the backbone of any community, quietly working behind the scenes to help their fellow man. In most cases the help they provide goes toward building tomorrow’s leaders. Brown County is no exception as three main civic organizations are present — Rotary Club, Lions Club and Kiwanis. These three organizations are out there each day performing work that often goes unnoticed. Each club is unique, as they are comprised of leaders of different ages, professions, religious beliefs and creeds. Each club makes its own mark on the communities in Brown County. Each organization has a rich history in not only Brownwood, but around the county and the world.

Rotary Club

ties also have an impact across the globe. The club has partnered with Aga Khan University; Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Global FoodBanking Network; Mercy Ships; ShelterBox; UNESCO—IHE; UNICEF; United Nations and World Health Organization. Rotary was founded on Feb. 23, 1905 in Chicago and within 16 years had clubs on six continents. Today, there are 1.2 million members worldwide, and has been working to eradicate the Poliovirus. That fight began in 1979, and, today, there are only three countries listed as having a Polio endemic — Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. Throughout history the club has featured prominent individuals such as Warren G. Hardin, a U.S. President; Dr. Charles H. Mayo, co-founder of the Mayo Clinic; and Admiral Richard E. Byrd, an American explorer. The club’s motto is “Service Above Self,” and the club is active with speech contests for students along with hosting a foreign exchange student program.

health initiatives around the world to control and prevent diabetes and diabetes retinopathy, the leading cause of vision loss in adults of working age. The club will arrange hearing screenings, host recreational camps for the deaf and also is involved in hearing aid recycling programs for children and adults. To aid the youth, Lions collect food, clothes and books, along with organizing vision or hearing screening, in addition to providing immunizations through vaccination drives. The club is also involved in literacy by starting reading programs and nutritional programs for undernourished children. The club also works to foster a spirit of understanding and takes interest in civic, cultural, social and moral welfare initiatives in the community. Lions Club International dates back to June 7, 1917, also in Chicago, where Melvin Jones laid the groundwork for the club.

Kiwanis Club

Lions Club Just over 100 years ago, Rotary International was started in Chicago and is comprised of local leaders that come together to exchange ideas, build relationships and take action to make the communities they serve a better place to live. While the Rotary Clubs at the local level work to make a difference, Rotary International and the Rotary Foundation back the clubs. Through this three level partnership, Rotary Club is able to not only make an impact in Brownwood but around the globe as well. Rotary International supports Rotary Clubs worldwide by coordinating local programs, campaigns and initiatives. Locally, Rotary Club, in addition to giving away free dictionaries, places flags through Brownwood on selected days throughout the year, according to White. “Our fundraising takes place via an annual golf tournament and an arts and crafts fair.” While the Brownwood Rotary Club has made a difference locally, the club’s activi-

As the largest service club in the world with over 1.4 million members, Lions Club International has a chapter in Brownwood and its main focus is making sure children and adults have eyeglasses and seniors who don’t have enough food get to eat. Lions Club has also volunteered to offer disaster relief for natural disasters and offer health programs that focus on sight, hearing and diabetes. The club, known as “Knights of the Blind,” features programs and services for the blind and visually impaired, and the aim is to eliminate preventable and reversible blindness. Lions also support local and larger-scale

Kiwanis, located in 80 nations, serves the community in many ways. The club’s focus is on changing the world by serving children, one child and one community at a time. The club sponsors K-kids for primary school children and has a builders club for adolescents and Key Clubs for teens. There are also clubs at the university level and action clubs for adults living with disabilities. The club performs various fundraising activities, and that money is donated to organizations such as Boys & Girls Club, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and “there are about 12 to 15 different organizations we help,” Wolf said. Kiwanis International is located in 80 nations and help communities in countless ways. The manner in which the club helps the community differs, as each club is different.
