WELCOME TO STEPHENVILLE

N

amed one of the 100 best small towns in America in a book compiled by Norman Crampton and published by Prentice Hall, Stephenville also claims the title of Cowboy Capital of the World. If there’s anywhere you’re likely to see a world champion cowboy in everyday life, it’s in Stephenville. Quality of life is what makes Stephenville such a desirable area to visit and to live. Out of 205 rural communities, Erath County was ranked the fifth best county in Texas in a statewide report released by the Texas State Comptroller in 1992 based on economic development. The area enjoys a broad-based economy with agriculture leading the way. Erath County is a top milk-producing area, with more than $500 million in total dairy goods produced annually. Another economic front runner is manufacturing. Five of the 10 leading employers in Stephenville are manufacturing firms. The economic impact of Tarleton State University, a member of the Texas A&M University system since 1917, is more than $170 million a year. With more than 850 faculty and staff, it’s also the single largest employer in the county. And with more than 11,000 students enrolled, the university brings a lively, youthful element and some great sporting events to the community. The Stephenville Independent School District has a total

www.yourstephenvilletx.com

enrollment of over 3,350 students, with three elementary schools, an intermediate school, a junior high and a high school. The Stephenville High School Yellow Jackets have been 3A Football state champions. With all these elements, it’s easy to see that Stephenville is a community with a lot of constructive contrasts. Its historic downtown square, with stone buildings from the 1890s, sits at the center of a modern, up-to-date community. Traditional Western culture and novel sports such as the Cowboy Capital Rollergirls exist side by side. The city pursues economic development while thoughtfully preserving its long-established identity. It has an easy-going rural vibe, yet it’s only 65 miles from metropolitan Fort Worth. Incorporated as a city in 1889, Stephenville is the county seat of Erath County. The city’s population is currently estimated at 18,000 with more than 6,000 households. The median family income at the last census was $52,320. The cost of living in Stephenville is lower than the average cost of living in Texas and lower than the nationwide average cost of living. Average summer high temperatures in Erath County are approximately 90 degrees Fahrenheit and winter average low temperatures hover around 45 degrees. Average annual precipitation is 30 inches and annual snowfall is two inches. Three major highways serve the area: U.S. Highway 377, U.S. Highway 281 and U.S. Highway 67. Photo by AUTUMN OWENS/E-T

TEXAS HEALTH HARRIS STEPHENVILLE

Breaking ground Texas Health Harris Stephenville recently broke ground on a new Emergency Department expected to be complete in 2015.

on new emergency department

T

exas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Stephenville took the next step in providing quality care for its patients by breaking ground on a brand new Emergency Department in early June 2014. Scheduled for completion in summer 2015, the $14 million dollar project is a much needed expansion for the hospital to serve the community more efficiently. The current emergency department is approximately 3,200 square feet with eight exam rooms. In an average year, the hospital treats approximately 18,000 patients in that space. So, the need is clear. “I’m sure there have been many days when the emergency department staff felt as if they were bursting at the seams,” said Christopher Leu, president at Texas Health Stephenville. “The new space addresses a need in our community. We are committed to continuously providing the best care for the

www.yourstephenvilletx.com

people of this community and this new emergency department will help us do that.” For more information about this and other services offered at Texas Health Stephenville, visit www.TexasHealth.org/Stephenville or call 877-THR-WELL. Upon completion, the new emergency department will be 9,500 square feet, nearly tripling the current size, and will feature a centralized clinical care station that will give caregivers full visibility of each of the 12 exam rooms in the new space. Overall, the new construction will be just over 15,000 square feet with a dedicated ambulance entrance along with a covered canopy for drop off and pick up for patients. “We are confident this project will

address the current physical limitations for adequate bed space,” Leu said. “It will also help us improve patient satisfaction by reducing wait times.” During the ground breaking ceremony held in early June, many community supporters spoke about the long-standing relationship Texas Health Stephenville has had with the residents of Erath County and its desire to continue growing to meet the community’s needs. That growth is something hospital administrators and community supporters both say has been a long anticipated project. “Our community has been growing steadily for the past few years and with that growth comes an increased need for healthcare,” Leu said. “We are excited to finally be a part of that growth. It is a major milestone that will help to increase our capabilities and our ability to deliver more efficient care.” 15

elcome to Stephenville, Texas, City of Champions and home of Stephenville Medical and Surgical Clinic (formerly Stephenville Hospital and Clinic), voted Best Clinic in 2012, 2013 and 2014 by the residents of Erath County. As pioneers of medicine in Erath County, the physicians of Stephenville Hospital & Clinic realized that bringing doctors from different specialties together with significant diagnostic services would be an efficient way to provide comprehensive care to this community, cultivate long-term patient relationships, and position medical professionals to provide optimal care for their patients. Through the years, SMSC has done just that, and in this year, we celebrated 85 years in Erath County! When you think quality healthcare in Stephenville, you think SMSC – a facility that began with eleven-rooms in the Langdon Hotel in 1929 and doubled in size twice by 1935. see SMSC, 33 18

OUT & ABOUT TRIP

Continued from 10 Hico For the shoppers in the crowd, take U.S. Highway 281 about 20 miles to the charming little town of Hico – a shopper’s paradise. While walking around the historic district, be sure to check out one-of-a kind stores like Blue Star Trading, Sugar Moon Antiques and nationally-recognized Wiseman House chocolates. Save time for a trip through the Billy the Kid Museum and don’t forget to order a piece of pie at the Koffee Kup, voted one of the 40 best small-town cafes in Texas.

Website: www.hico-tx.com Telephone: 254-796-4620, Chamber of Commerce

Bluff Dale Stop in at Bluff Dale Vineyards, at 5222 County Road 148, to sample some wine and relax in the vineyard’s tasting room or on the deck overlooking the fields of grapes. Granbury No list of day trips would be complete without a stop in beautiful, historic downtown Granbury. Go to the courthouse square for fantastic shopping and the Granbury Theater Company, where Broadway-style shows are produced with remarkable skill and creativity. Some offerings from July through September are Driving Miss Daisy, Exploring Mark Twain and Legally Blonde, The Musical. Be sure to check show dates on the website. Website: granburyoperahouse.org

A great spot for those with kids is 32

Granbury City Beach Park with white sand imported directly from South Padre Island and a water spray park to keep them busy. Website: granburytx.com

Just west of Granbury on Highway 377 is one of the few drive-in theaters left in America today. As you probably know, drive-ins are an endangered species, so this spot is a genuine treat. Shows are presented on Friday and Saturday nights. Film listings, directions and ticket pricing – example: 20 bucks for a car load of six – are on the drive-in website. Website: the brazos.com

Two great spots for adults are Barking Rocks Winery, offering handcrafted premium wines, and Revolver Brewing, an artisanal microbrewery specializing in craft beers.
