Changing the Game of Yoga YuMee Chung revolutionizes our thoughts on the practice

Some yoga teachers are embraced for their lively, high-energy classes, others for their mindful teachings, and still others for an inspiring spiritual practice or for their anatomy expertise. And then there are the gamechangers—teachers revolutionizing the industry and the student experience. YuMee Chung is not one of these teachers. She’s all of them. In this ever-growing yoga marketplace, YuMee is evidence that there are indeed shining young stars making the future bright. Chung, a co-founder of Toronto’s acclaimed Jivamukti studio (which closed in 2007) attracts students from far and wide, many traveling a good distance to attend her classes in the Markham/ Stouffville area. “YuMee is by far one of my favourite teachers in the GTA. I’m so inspired by her asana sequences and teachings of loving kindness,” shares Gerald Riosa, a Moksha Yoga teacher from Brampton. “Her wealth of knowledge and delivery during workshops and classes makes my heart crave more.” Chung also helped revolutionize the Toronto yoga scene by creating and launching Passport to Prana in 2005, a card that allows holders to try a variety of area studios at an accessible price, providing exposure and opportunity to students and studios alike. Chung has her advanced certification in Jivamukti Yoga and also teaches the much-talked-about Yoga Tune-Up method. In what now seems like a whole other lifetime, YuMee was also a Toronto securities lawyer, a career she gave up knowing life would never be the same. “I wanted to earn a right livelihood and share
a remarkable practice that ignited my life,” she says. “I knew that teaching would make me happy in the ways that count, but I was also acutely aware that leaving my day job would bring a certain amount of instability and a serious cut in pay.” Today Chung devotes time to initiating a change in how we value yoga teachers in the West. “To be blunt, training to be a yoga teacher was harder than law school. I had to become fluent in physical and energetic anatomy, Sanskrit, yoga philosophy and therapeutic touch. And most of us (teachers) spend thousands each year to continue our studies.” Ongoing study fuels Chung’s passion for teaching, and she has modified her lifestyle to afford following this path. “We as a culture tend not to value the stuff I think is most interesting: healing, spiritual growth, creativity and self-expression, social and political activism. Somehow we have this idea that people who are called to do this work should do it as a hobby, that it’s a dalliance. In actuality, teachers need to be properly nourished if they are to nourish others, physically, intellectually, spiritually.” So far, Chung has coordinated a group benefits opportunity for yoga teachers, who typically tend to work as independent contractors rather than employees. This is a start, but she’s determined to see a lot more change. “We know that when people do yoga they live better; they’re healthier, more ethical, kinder, more engaged. April 22nd marks the celebration of Earth Day around the world. It’s safe to say that it’s a day that is, for the most part, generally overlooked. In some minds, it goes no further than a day where you might reconsider throwing your recyclable items in the trash.

Earth Day, however, has an illustrious history and its message is much more powerful than many realize. It was conceived in the United Sates as an environmental awareness event. The event in 1970 was the spark needed to start the environmental movement. The first Earth Day caused major change within the American government. Congress passed clean water and air acts following the movement’s environmental education. It also led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency, which is responsible for environmental research and the enforcement of environmental laws. The movement continued to grow and in 1990 Canada, along with 141 other countries, celebrated the first international Earth Day. Today, that number has increase to 170 countries. Canadians today participate in so many environmental projects that the event has grown into Earth Week. There is such an abundance of events that April is slowly becoming Earth Month. Almost all children in Canadian schools are involved in an Earth Day activity. How do I participate? There are numerous ways to join the Earth Day celebration. Events range from large public happenings to small community projects – all of which are always looking for more participants. Check local schools and community centres for local projects or consider joining one of the many larger events that take place across Canada. You can visit earthday.ca for an extensive list of events in your neighborhood, or to register your event and spread the word. You can also find numerous resources to help you live a Greener life and contribute to a more environmentally responsible community. Perhaps the best way to celebrate Earth Day is to be aware of the environment all the time. It’s not something to just take off the shelf once year – being environmentally conscious is a necessary part of life. Earth Day’s message reminds us that we leave a harmful footprint behind, but it’s up to us to reduce that footprint. Help make the world a better place for everyone. It covers nearly three quarters of the planet’s surface, and comprises about two- thirds of our body weight. It transports nutrients to our cells, while flushing away metabolites and toxins. A person can live for more than two weeks without food, however, you would not likely survive more than a few days without water. Most people wait until they are thirsty before reaching for a glass, but thirst indicates your body is already dehydrated. Mild dehydration results in decreased energy, muscle fatigue, poor mental concentration, and diminished athletic performance. Insufficient water intake has also been linked to an increased risk of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and Type II Diabetes. Daily intake requirements vary with factors such as lifestyle and body weight, but typically a person should consume at least 2-3 litres of water per day. Foods like fruit and vegetables are moisture rich and reduce the need for water intake directly. Intense physical activity and exercise, particularly in a hot environment, can increase intake requirements to over five litres per day. The easiest way to gauge if you are drinking enough water is to observe the colour of your urine, which should be pale yellow to almost clear. A healthy person’s kidneys can process about 15 litres of water per day, so there is virtually no risk of drinking too much other than more frequent visits to the bathroom! In very rare circumstances, there can be a risk of

diluted sodium levels in the blood (a condition known as hyponatremia), which results from drinking too much, too fast and/or drinking water without electrolyte replacement after endurance activities lasting more than two hours. The risk of hyponatremia increases further, when endurance activities are performed in high heat. Most important is replacement of sodium, due to its high concentration in sweat relative to daily intake. Start each day with a 500 ml glass of water at room temperature before anything else passes your lips. A little H2O first thing in the am helps to replace insensible water loss, which occurs naturally during sleep (mostly through respiration and perspiration). Drinking water first thing in the morning also helps to prime your digestive system for that most important meal of the day – breakfast! Better yet, add some fresh lemon juice to your water to further aid in digestion. Lemon juice has a glycemic index of zero and no calories. As chlorine is typically added to municipal water supplies to kill pathogenic microorganisms, the taste of tap water may vary, however most municipal tap water is quite safe. Alternatively, you can install a reverse osmosis (RO) filtration system, which provides a convenient water supply that is about 99% pure, environmentally friendly (compared to bottled water) and tastes great. T
here’s an undeniable luminosity that radiates from Baptiste followers, a shine in their eyes and a certain strength in both stature and heart. Where does it come from? Baron Baptiste — raised by yoga and seemingly born to teach — has all the ingredients that make a yoga teacher great: deep roots in his practice, a commitment to learning and an approach to leadership that’s at once humble and unapologetic. He says, “Teaching is one of my greatest teachers.” His students say that translates loud and clear through the Baptiste community. Baron Baptiste, creator of Baptiste Power Vinyasa Yoga, is the reason the words “power” and “yoga” go together as intuitively as, say, “peanut butter” and “jam.” That’s a pretty big deal, considering most people today say that it’s fitness that first brought them to the mat. Power yoga speaks to people, and once they try it, they realize quickly that “power” refers to far more than its high-energy style. The Baptiste approach includes a strong physical practice along with time spent on the cushion looking within, “encouraging participants to reclaim their full potential, discover creativity, awaken passion, create authenticity, confidence and new possibilities.” This practice is about transformation on the deepest levels. Through his work as a yoga teacher, author, trainer and speaker, Baron has motivated countless people from all walks of life to become more inspired versions of themselves. Not surprisingly, Baptiste Power Vinyasa Yoga affiliate studios are growing across North America and beyond, and the movement is expanding every day, with studios growing at a steady pace in Ontario. Kinndli McCollum and Pauline Caballero of Power Yoga Canada are the first Baptiste-affiliated yoga outfit in Canada. The duo recently brought Baptiste to Toronto for a full weekend session; it was filled to capacity with students eager to experience the passion and enthusiasm of the raved about practice. Baron has played a key role in changing the Western concept of what it means to get on your mat. Although yoga was perceived as something of a boys› club in the East, things changed in yoga›s migration to the West in the mid-1900s. Westerners stereotyped yoga with images of new-agey white ladies in spandex onesies, sitting in full lotus and chanting to an unknown spirit in the sky. While that idea evolved over time, it took people like Baron Baptiste rubbing shoulders with the likes of the Philadelphia Eagles to start opening doors and challenging those ideas. Baron served on the NFL team›s coaching staff for four years, bringing his yoga-savvy to pro-football. Team owner Jeffrey Lurie said, “When it comes to training champions, Baron Baptiste is exceptional.” Hmm; this doesn’t quite fit the whole crystals and chimes idea of yoga. When asked if more work is needed to get men on the mat, Baron says, “I think there›s more work to be done to get more people practicing yoga. There has definitely been a cultural shift where more men are showing up to our trainings and studios. The physicality of the
Baptiste Yoga practice is certainly a draw, as are the results: increased vitality, more ease, greater physical and mental flexibility. The benefits of Baptiste Yoga are not gender exclusive.” He continues, “I think one of the greatest barriers for any practitioner, male or female, is intimidation, self-consciousness, a concern that they won’t be able to ‘do it right.’ In Baptiste Yoga, we focus on making the practice adaptable for every practitioner. It’s about working with the practice to see results in your own life.” As with any revolutionary, Baptiste could be an easy target for the yoga-boom’s nay-sayers. His pivotal role in bringing yoga to the masses may raise a purist eyebrow; he did after all coin the term “boot camp” in relation to yoga. The reality is that Baron comes armed with more mat credentials than most. His parents are real deal Western yoga pioneers, and Baron was raised in the company of yoga greats. His dad, Walt, founded Baptiste Yoga in the 40s. While the rest of us were learning our times tables and building tree forts, Baron was hanging with Swami Rama and studying with masters like B.K.S. Iyengar and Desikachar. Thus, with roots firmly planted in all the right places, Baron’s a trailblazer in his own right. Armed with the wisdom of his parents and teachers, he pushed through stereotypes to help bring yoga to the people, breaking down walls every step of the way. Baron celebrates the vital role his parents played in his development as a student and teacher. “My parents were definitely pioneers, as well as my first teachers. They taught me so much about life and yoga and that there really is no separation between the two. A key distinction I learned from them is that yoga is available to me in every moment and that it creates wonderful results in my life when I am genuinely in the action of it, living it. My father always said ‘Yoga doesn’t work. You do the work, and then it works and gives greatly.’” Through his parents Baron learned that meditation, getting on the mat, breathing deeply and moving the body with power and compassion are key. “Walking awake — acting, thinking, eating and being intentional in ways that support my wholeness and health is essential yoga practice. That’s the stuff that keeps my practice in existence and expanding.” Some say Baron Baptiste has championed the concept of branding and applying standard business practices within the yoga industry. While Baron doesn’t quite see it that way, he’s honest about why he thinks certain labels or identities play an important role. “I have wondered what a ‘no-brand’ yoga world would look like; all yoga studios on the planet would have the name “YOGA.” The class schedules would be nameless and would only list class times and perhaps the different levels of intensity. But if we were to strip yoga of all interpretation or individual expression and voice, I wonder if that might leave the experience of it more bland. And who would be the ultimate authority to determine what is the ‘correct,’ or true, way?” He

makes a strong point. Baptiste continues, “I don’t consider myself a champion of branding yoga. I do believe I’ve been clear about what people are going to get right from the start in a Baptiste Yoga practice. I have always felt it fair and appropriate to tell people what defines my teaching and what it can and cannot offer them. It allows them to make an informed choice of what’s right for them personally. Like all things, yoga is subject to the interpretation of human beings. There is both beauty and the possibility of delusion in that, but I personally feel that distinguishing different purposes, approaches, voices or expressions of yoga practice actually empowers students to choose what works best for them and serves more fully what is most important for each person and his or her unique needs and goals.” Baron believes that branding creates knowledge of what’s available and possible for students, giving them the freedom to make informed decisions about what’s best for them at any given time. “In the end, it’s all yoga, no matter what you call it. It’s like ice cream — it’s all ice cream. Is it wrong or not yogic to have a personal flavor that sits best with you? I think we can all agree that, whether on the mat or off the mat, everything is yoga. EVERYTHING. We can describe our approach or focus on different elements of the practice, but yoga ultimately comes down to who you are being in a given moment. And that is a precious, individual experience that doesn’t need or deserve a label.” Some shy away from discussing how something as ancient, profound and deeply transformational as yoga has become big business around the globe. Baron doesn’t waver when asked for his thoughts on whether the industry puts this age-old practice at risk. “The magic and raw energy of yoga is not something that we can point to or package. It has no form. We keep the magic of yoga alive through the platform of our own practice, by sharing it authentically and from the heart. Can the essence, depth and real quality get lost in the business of yoga as yoga’s popularity continues to expand? Yes, of course, but
I feel that’s where we can each take responsibility for doing our own work of transformation and personal evolution. In fact, business is not inherently a bad thing; the kind of generous and effective sharing that excites me requires a certain amount of organization, collaboration, planning and a people-oriented business model to ensure that every person we serve is left personally empowered and inspired to share the practice in a way that positively impacts the world.” Despite the rapid growth within the industry, Baptiste says he’s heartened by the quality of yoga being offered in the world. “Not long ago, there were only a few well-known teachers, and yoga wasn’t accessible to the everyday person. Now you can walk into almost any town and find a solid practice. The sheer number of people motivated to share yoga excites me, and I believe that with more choices and options, quality is more important than ever before; it inspires us all to up our game and deliver amazing experiences.” Baron notes that people have the opportunity now to practice not only in studios but also using pod-casts and online videos, making the practice of yoga with outstanding teachers more accessible than ever before. He even offers advice on how to select a studio within your community. “I’ve always found the best way to choose a studio and teacher is to get a sense of the community that studio or teacher creates. There’s a different energy between “me me me” and “we we we.” Find the places and people who are about the whole and it’s hard to go wrong.” It’s easy to believe that the post-Power-Yoga twinkle in everyone’s eye can be traced back to this formidable teacher and industry game-changer. Baptiste Yoga is grounded deeply in North American yoga culture and is growing stronger every day. Baron continues to be a devoted student of yoga and says he learns more these days from his own kids. He adds, “Some of my best teachers are my peers and the people I work with every day. From California dreaming to culinary reality show, Chef Ezra Title talks about achieving balance and learning to breathe

By Mairead Walsh Chef Ezra Title is brimming with enthusiasm and endearingly modest when I ask him how it all started – his journey to become a co-host of OWN’s Healthy Gourmet television show and owner of Chezvous Dining, a customized catering company that offers at-home restaurant service, cooking classes and a uniquely combined yoga and dining experience. “I am the youngest of four children, and I think amid the hectic pace of our family life, dinner was the time we gathered around the table and life settled briefly,” he explains. “We all came together and everyone got their turn to talk. We weren’t allowed to watch TV during the week, so dinner time was our escape from homework too,” he laughs.
Avoiding homework was just the beginning for Ezra who admits that while attending McGill, he wasn’t exactly studious. “I didn’t really enjoy class and my love for cooking was growing, so I started skipping classes to cook instead.” Nurturing his passion, he decided to venture across the continent to San Francisco to attend culinary school. “I always had the cliché dream of living in California,” he grins. “I love the northern Californian style of cooking. I just fell in love with the local produce, the farmer’s market and the fresh ingredient-driven recipes. I knew I was doing what I was meant to do.” SPRING 2012 | WWW.SWEATEQUITYMAGAZINE.COM

With his heart full of culinary song, he moved to New York for a brief time and worked in restaurants before quickly deciding that wasn’t the life for him. Not only were the long, late hours unappealing, but his future wife was unimpressed. “The thing she liked least was the ego involved in the cooking world that I had assumed. It was important to me back then to be highly regarded. I used to have big ideas of becoming a celebrity chef and receiving the accolades, but I was in jeopardy of losing my soulmate and the life I really wanted.” Settling back home in Toronto, Ezra got a 9-5 job, but he missed cooking for people. So he started hosting dinner parties, initially for friends and family, until his hobby grew to a sustainable catering business. “I got out of restaurants because that world is all-consuming, but with catering I can work hard and still have time for my family, friends, and myself. It’s been a struggle trying to balance my love of cooking with the family life that I grew up with and want for my own kids.” Yet, there was another influence that affected Ezra’s course. Now I’ve heard men say their wife took their breath away, but Ezra credits his wife with teaching him how to breathe. “I used to have bad allergies and a lot of congestion, but it got better soon after I met my wife,” he smiles. “So we say she cured my allergies, but I think it’s because I started doing yoga when I met her.” His wife, Elisse, is a certified yoga instructor. “The breathing in yoga changed my life. There’s a lot of nervous, anxious energy in cooking; the stress levels are through the roof, and so knowing

It really grounds and balances me.” His wife’s passion for yoga and his own love of cooking are what inspired the creation of Yo Dinna’, one of Chezvous’ most popular catering services. For an evening of activity and indulgence, Elisse leads guests through a stimulating yoga experience (as challenging or relaxing as you like) and Ezra serves up a seasonal menu made from fresh local ingredients. “Everything we do is personalized. There is no standard menu; we tailor every menu to what each client wants.” Ezra openly admits he’s the flavour guy. “I like to cook duck legs in duck fat and do whatever it takes to achieve great taste, because I’m usually cooking for people who are celebrating and indulging and I don’t want to compromise flavour.” It was his fervour for flavour with an added measure of funny that landed him the role as co-host on the Healthy Gourmet. “A contact from a culinary exhibition suggested I audition for the show, and during my audition I could hear the producer laughing from across the room. I only cooked one of my three prepared recipes and they said that was enough.” For those who haven’t seen the Healthy Gourmet, it stages a battle between flavour proponent Chef Ezra and nutritionist Julie Daniluk. Each episode, their challenge is to strike a balance between health-boosting superfoods and mouth-watering dishes. But even Ezra himself admits that, by the second season, his co-host’s nutritional advice started to sink in. “As a result of being on the show, I’ve tapped into another side of me,” he says. “I have a greater appreciation for healthy cooking and recognize the challenge of incorporating it into one’s personal diet. I even adapted my own diet and lost 25 lbs.” He says he still champions flavour, but his attitude has evolved. “My philosophy when it comes to nutrition is eat properly 90% of the time and eat what you want – let’s call it indulge – 10% of the time. White Bean Agnolottis with Roasted Peppers, Almonds & Kale

Making homemade pasta is a one of my greatest pleasures. I especially like to make stuffed pasta with my son who loves getting his hands dirty and enjoys eating our delicious work. For this recipe you can make your own pasta from scratch or buy fresh lasagna noodles to get a head start. This is a dish for everybody as it is vegetarian, filling and colourful. It makes a great appetizer, side dish or main and you can easily add chicken or shrimp to increase the amount of protein. Ingredients: Agnolottis »»10 ounces white beans »»1 shallot »»1 small clove garlic »»1 cup tofu, cubed »»1/8 cup extra virgin olive oil sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste »»750g whole semolina lasagna noodles, fresh
Roasted Red Pepper, Almonds and Kale »»1 clove garlic 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil »»2 cups roasted red peppers »»1/4 cup almonds, blanched and sliced »»6 cups kale »»1/4 cup stock (vegetable or chicken) »»1/2 cup basil leaves, chopped »»1/4 cup parmigiano reggiano »»sea salt and black pepper to taste Directions: Agnolottis 1. Blend beans, shallot, garlic, tofu, oil, and seasonings in a food processor to make a smooth paste. 2. Lay fresh lasagna noodles on a work surface. Place a round glass upside down on the lasagna noodle, and use a knife to cut out circles. 3. Drop 1 teaspoon of filling in the centre of each agnolotti round. Dip your finger in water and apply to 1/2 the edge of each agnolotti. 4. Wrap pasta over the filling and gently press two pasta edges together,
ensuring a closed seal. Place agnolottis on a tray lined with parchment paper. Roasted Red Pepper, Almonds and Kale Sauce 1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and season with salt. 2. Finely chop 1 clove of garlic. Cut roasted peppers into long strips. Strip kale leaves from the stem. 3. Heat a frying pan on low heat and add olive oil. Add garlic to the pan and saute for 30 seconds being careful not to brown. 4. Add almonds and roasted peppers, season with salt and pepper and cook for 3 minutes. 5. Add kale to the pan with stock, cover and let kale steam for 3 minutes. 6. Add agnolottis to pot of water and cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Remove agnolottis from water with a slotted spoon and add to pan with peppers, almonds and kale. Add basil, toss gently and place in a serving dish. Garnish with fresh parmigiano reggiano.

Rise & Let Your Inner Warrior Shine A yoga sequence to awaken mind and body

“Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” These are the words of Benjamin Franklin, echoing the importance of Brahma-Muhurta, an age-old tradition practiced by the ancient yogis. Brahma-Muhurta refers to the early morning hours before sunrise, when the effect of spiritual activities is said to be much greater. What better way to start one’s day than to rise with the sun in the
spirit of a warrior? This sequence of postures energizes every cell in the body and, when practiced before sunrise, prepares the body, mind and soul for the challenges we may face throughout the day. Those who perform the warrior series at Brahma-Muhurta can experience heightened body awareness and enhanced concentration as well as improved digestion and increased muscle tone. Virabhadrasana 1 (Warrior 1): Begin standing in Tadasana, facing forward at the front of your mat. Step the right foot back, placing it at a 45 degree angle and connecting your back heel to the earth. Bend your front knee deeply while keeping the back leg straight. Square your hips, torso and shoulders to the top edge of the mat. Extend your arms overhead, alongside the ears.
Virabhadrasana 2 (Warrior 2): Place your right foot parallel to the back edge of the mat. Keeping the right leg straight, align your left knee over the ankle to form a 90 degree angle. Extend your arms to shoulder height, engage the muscles of the arms, and gaze over your left hand.
Utthita Parsvakonasana (Extended Side Angle): From Warrior 2, exhale and bring the left hand inside of the left foot (keep minimal weight in the hand). Reach the right arm straight up to align the wrist over the shoulder. Extend outwards from the crown of the head to lengthen both sides of the body. Turn your chest forwards.
Baddha Utthita Parsvakonasana (Bound Side Angle): Bring the left thigh parallel to the floor to deepen the lunge. Reach your left arm underneath the front-leg hamstring. Reach your right arm around the lower back and hold your right wrist with the left hand. Stack the right shoulder above the left, and turn from the core; gaze over the right shoulder, lifting your heart skywards.

Sound Mind, Healthy Body Matthew Lefave shares his passion for CrossFit
Balancing the scales of justice and tipping the scales of fitness are all within Matthew Lefave’s impressive portfolio. At work, Lefave is an insurance defence litigator at Stieber Berlach LLP, but outside the courtroom, the 31-year-old Nova Scotia native is an elite CrossFit athlete who ranked 10th in the men’s division of the Canada East Regionals for the 2011 Reebok CrossFit Games. Lefave was introduced to CrossFit by a female colleague almost twice his age and was shocked at what he discovered. “She spoke so passionately about CrossFit and I was surprised that she could perform all these feats of strength,” he says. “She inspired me, and once I started CrossFit I was hooked. I have never found anything as remotely challenging or anything that delivered undeniable results, not only fitness but overall quality of life.” Lefave found CrossFit workouts were the perfect fitness fix for his demanding law career. “They are short and intense, typically five to 30 minutes not including warm-up,” says Lefave. “By comparison, a typical cardio and weightlifting double-header takes up to two hours — too long for a lunch hour workout.” Lefave says he’s fortunate to be with a law firm that is supportive of his passions outside of the Law. “If I wasn’t able to sneak down to the gym on my lunch breaks over the last few years I wouldn’t have had any success with CrossFit on a competitive level. Wall ball is a front squat into a press similar to a thruster. It is used in CrossFit to not only to increase metabolic conditioning and strength but promotes increased coordination and other neurological adaptations which CrossFit lists as an indictor of fitness.
Kettle bell swings are great for core strength and metabolic conditioning. Swings commence with straight arms and the bell between the legs. Body weight is in the heels. The force to move the bell is again largely derived from the hips. The end position can be completely overhead – which is the CrossFit Games standard – or only to about shoulder height.

Clean and Jerk involves moving the barbell from a stationary position on the floor to a stable position over head. The “clean” brings the weight to shoulder height where the lifter will pause to set up for the jerk which moves the load from the shoulder level to a stable locked out position over head. The force to propel the weight off the floor in the clean is primarily generated by the legs and hips while the lifter jumps with the bar in hand. The idea is to generate sufficient vertical force on the bar that the lifter lands under the load catching
the bar and standing up in what is referred to as the “rack position” - simply a standing position with finger tips on the bar at shoulder level. The “jerk” begins with the legs and hips as well. The lifter dips and jumps generating vertical force on the bar. The lifter than lands under the bar with the arms locked out and stands up with the bar completely over head in a stable position. The bar path should track directly over the body of the lifter which will maintain stability and greatly reduce if not eliminate risk of injury.
Rowing is reasonably self explanatory but involves more technique than one might naturally assume. I try to keep my pulls long by extending my arms and the handles as far forward as possible before beginning the pull. Rowing is fantastic for metabolic conditioning training. This movement has the capacity to generate a great deal of power particularly over short distances such as 500 metres.

A Powerful Equation Strength + Flexibility = Power

Most people, especially athletes,
come to yoga with the intent to increase their flexibility. And yoga will do this. What they don’t know is that it can offer this and so much more to athletes on the field of play: balance, strength, flexibility, refined breathing techniques, mental discipline and goal visualization. Let’s focus on the flexibility aspect. I work with athletes that include little leaguers, pros and Olympians. Across the board, I hear the same two schools of thought on flexibility: 1) I’m too tight; I’ll never be flexible. 2) If I become too flexible, I’ll lose muscular strength. Both statements are ungrounded. Everyone, athlete or not, suffers from tight muscles and general stiffness to some degree. Even world champion gymnasts struggle with less cooperative parts of the body. Let’s handle these myths in turn. First, “I’m too tight; I’ll never be flexible.” In working with athletes, I don’t aim for them to perform the splits or move their leg behind their head. These goals would have no relevance to their sport, their performance, or their success. My approach is to help them increase their muscular symmetry, heighten their level of awareness and become more flexible than they were upon first walking in the door. As an offensive lineman, doing the splits is a ridiculous goal, but having flexible wrists and an open chest would be beneficial. Be smart with your yoga; combine common sense with consideration to inspire your training. Second, “If I become too flexible, I’ll lose muscular strength.” I respond with a simple motto: Strength + Flexibility = Power. Consider a bow and arrow. The bow is strong enough to resist relative force. However, if the bow string is too tight, when you pull it back to release the arrow, it’ll only withdraw an inch or two. Release the
arrow and it plops to the floor. Now, imagine a bow string so strong that it won’t break and, at the same time, flexible enough to draw beyond your ear. When you release the string, the arrow flies with force and focus. It’s easy to see the power engendered by strength and flexibility in this example. The same holds true for your body. Do you want more power on the field? Then work to increase flexibility with the same enthusiasm that you hit the weights. Furthermore, supple muscles are less prone to injury. Orthopedic studies show that the more open and flexible the hips are, the lower the incident of knee injury. If you’re in a quick-moving sport where transitions are made on a dime or if you’re impacted by the ground or an opponent, the energy of the impact must go somewhere. If you have cement-tight hips, they haven’t the ability to absorb the force. Instead, the most vulnerable part of the body will, which is typically the complex and delicate knee joint. Makes sense, right? This concept applies to all different areas and is another great reason to consider the body in a holistic way, as an interconnected entity working in harmony with various parts of itself.

Lone Star Getaway Our traveling yogi visits an eco-friendly spa deep in the heart of Texas By Kat Tancock

The Austin area – and indeed, much of Texas – has been in a drought for about a decade, says my guide, Courtney, on our ecology hike at Travaasa. Having driven in from the airport the night before in a downpour, it seems hard to believe, but while exploring the resort property’s several miles of hiking trails, signs of the drought are evident. For one thing, there’s not much wildlife: surburbanites have been feeding the deer, Courtney says. Some of the trees are dying back, and even the prickly pear cacti, the state plant of Texas, don’t look as healthy as they should. I’m at Travaasa for a relaxing, invigorating, even exciting, long weekend. Billed as an experiential resort, the property offers myriad things to do and my schedule is packed with fun and fit activities: yoga, meditation, a core conditioning class, a well-earned massage, a challenge course complete with zipline – even a ride on a mechanical bull. Let me tell you, it works the
inner thighs. But on my first visit to the Lone Star State – the biggest in the country, aside from Alaska – I’m just as intrigued by Travaasa’s sense of place, and how it offers an escape to visitors, many of whom are from the area, while retaining its Texan vibe and connection to the land. Travaasa was designed with the environment firmly in mind, says the resort’s director of guest services, Kristine Huffman, as we enjoy goat cheese-stuffed mushrooms and a Friday-night wine tasting in Jean’s Kitchen, the property’s restaurant – in 2010, the property garnered a Best of Green award from eco-website Treehugger in the Best Resort category. Water conservation, of course, is a major consideration, which is why the grounds were landscaped with native drought- and pest-resistant plants and low-flow fixtures are used everywhere on-site. Around the hiking trails, fallen branches and trees are left where
they land. An expansion to the property has been purchased and is being lightly developed into natural riding trails and a kitchen garden, so that executive chef Benjamin Baker can use even more local ingredients. Local specialties I tried on my visit include Texan red wine – who knew? – and Texas-grown pink grapefruit, as well as a tasty Texas Heat cocktail made with citrus and jalapeños. As for the Texan culture, I took a riding lesson with Norris, a real cowboy, who later offered a lassoing class that I unfortunately had to skip in favour of, um, cocktail making. And did I mention the mechanical bull? “We were amazed at how quickly the sense of community grew at our studio,” shares Amy Ballinger, owner of the Hamilton, Ontario studio which opened in 2010. “People organically wanted to be a greater part of our community and help make it a really special place.” Students have grouped together to form committees, dedicated to everything from reaching out, being green, and even choosing the music that plays in the lobby! “It has truly become the students’ space - it’s really inspiring.” Laura Delegarde is volunteer captain of the studio’s music committee and shares her excitement. “The Committees bridge the gap between a solo practice and a community practice. They give students the motivation they need to break the ice and engage with the studio’s community. Since becoming a team captain, those members of the studio who were once just smiling faces have become acquaintances and friends. I have learned many of their names, stories and talents as I interact with them more regularly and pursue them to see how they can enhance our committee... as a result, they are enhancing my

½ to 1 lb (250 to 500 g) spaghetti or other pasta shape Canola or olive oil, for cooking 1 Tbsp (15 mL) butter (optional) 1 large onion, chopped 2 cups (500 mL) cooked chickpeas, or a 19 oz (540 mL) can, rinsed and well drained 1 garlic bulb, cloves peeled and chopped 1 large bunch of kale Juice of half a lemon Grated Parmesan cheese Salt and pepper to taste Put a big pot of water on to boil, and cook the spaghetti. Meanwhile, heat a generous drizzle of oil in a heavy skillet, add the butter, if you’re using it, and sauté the onion and chickpeas for about 10 minutes, until soft and starting to turn golden. Add the garlic and cook for a few more minutes. Scoop out the chickpeas and set them aside in a bowl (don’t worry about getting all the onions—you just want to keep your chickpeas somewhat crisp). Meanwhile, rinse the kale, discard the tough ribs, and coarsely chop or tear the leaves; add the kale to the skillet. Scoop out about ¼ cup of the pasta water, straight from the pot, and add it to the skillet. Cover the skillet, reduce the heat to medium-low, and cook for about 10 minutes, until tender. Drain the spaghetti, reserving a bit of the cooking liquid. Add the spaghetti to the kale mixture. Add the lemon juice and a few spoonfuls of the reserved cooking liquid; toss to combine. Add the chickpeas and a handful of Parmesan cheese and toss until well combined—add more cooking liquid if you like it saucier. Season with salt and pepper and serve immediately.

In fact, this would probably be as delicious with quinoa, barley, or brown rice as well—or swap the Parmesan for other intensely flavoured cheeses, like aged Gouda or Asiago. Ingredients:
4 cups cooked french lentils 1 chopped leek 1/2 clove garlic or garlic sprouts 1/2 red, yellow or orange pepper 1 lime - juice & rind bunch of baby spinach 1 tbsp tandoori (turmeric) ½ cup greek yogurt Method
Dressing:
Before putting salad together, grate lime and put rind aside. Take greek yogurt, add tandoor, juice of the lime and ½ the rind. Let the ingredients get to know each other and have fun! Salad:

Springtime means the return of fresh and local By Chef Doug McNish To me, spring means one thing: green. Everything from vegetables to living. And it’s a wonderful time to reflect and plant the seeds for what is sure to be a beautiful and bountiful summer. Most of us have been indoors throughout the winter, hibernating and eating rich, heavy foods. As the weather warms up, we start shedding the layers of baggy winter clothing and voila!- there’s a little extra padding around the middle. So, we get into workout mode, sweating it out at the gym and running in the mild weather. Long gone are the big pots of chili and thick slices of lasagna - salads are what we crave now. One of my favorite tools in the raw food kitchen is a Borner Thin Julienne Cutter. This handy gadget creates thin julienne strips from whole fruits or vegetables. It looks similar to a mandolin but instead of one single sharp blade it has a row of small teeth that can cut a carrot or apple into thin strips. This tool has the ability to turn fruits and vegetables into slaw in a matter of minutes. They are inexpensive - about $15 - and can be found in your local Chinatown or restaurant supply store. Try this: Take a head of organic kale and slice it very thin. Take your new julienne tool and use it to create some strips of apple and pear - about ½ of each is good. Toss these strips with the kale in a deep bowl along with some fresh lemon juice, apple juice, hemp or olive oil and a pinch of salt. Add a few tablespoons of hemp seeds for protein and healthy fats and you have yourself a simple and delicious kale salad: a wonderful way to get a ton of healthy green

into your diet. One of my favorite green super foods is something called Chlorella. Chlorella is a single celled green algae that can be purchased in powder or capsule form. It’s reported to be one of the best sources of chlorophyll on the planet and is said to help detoxify the body, amongst many other health benefits. I like to use chlorella in powder form and mix it in with the hemp oil to create a deep dark green oil that can be used in place of olive oil in virtually any salad dressing. Springtime also means local fruits and veggies are sprouting up all over! Eating raw and locally is great for you and the environment – and it’s easy. Frequent your local farmers’ markets: buy the freshest there is and meet the good folks who grow your food. Some of my favorite local greens in the springtime are: fiddleheads, asparagus, spinach and lettuce. This spring, splurge for one great kitchen gadget that will help you eat raw and commit to buying locally raised foods. Living green, raw and local has never been easier!

I remember as a young child
not understanding why some people had more money than others. The solution seemed so simple - people should share everything and only take what they need. I knew that the earth had enough abundance for everyone. Later in my studies of economics at Greenwich University, I learned that this was called Communism, and although in it’s ideal form it may have had some merit, in the real world, how it was applied was actually considered almost evil. The occupy wall street movement isn’t about the 99 percent defeating or toppling the 1 percent. It’s about creating a more beautiful
world, one which our hearts tell us is possible. A sacred world. A world that works for everybody. A world that is healing. A world of peace. And a world where the earth’s bounty is shared. The secret of Bob Marley’s huge success lies in his lyrics - they were about something. His music had true value. Bob’s art was life transforming, answering our highest needs and it answers in a positive way, the question that we must always ask before we begin any activity in life. Whether we are occupying wall street, occupying our mat or occupying love, the question should be: how is this going to make the world a better place? Marley is a great example of a
karma yogi as he gave so much selflessly and took action to help others in need by singing for what he believed in without attachment. Nearly all of Bob Marley’s songs were about unity of all people and this is exactly what yoga means union. Karma Yoga recognizes that spiritual awareness and evolution can be attained through one’s actions in life. Unclouded by ignorance, desire and attachment, the karma yogi always performs the right action, at the right time, in the
right manner. And in this way, she finds liberation. Many of Marley’s songs featured the struggles of the powerless and the poor, as well as preaching brotherhood and peace for all humankind. This was his way of making a stand. This was his movement. In occupying and being occupied by one love or becoming awakened to loving power, one can see all the material and spiritual world is infused with loving kindness, goodness and joy. One can deeply know the universality and harmony of all that is. With this understanding one feels safe, confident, solid, fresh and reflects all that is wonderful and good in our nature. Just like Marley, we need to do everything we can to nurture this evolving movement and keep it always moving in the direction of love, in the direction of life. One love is an occupation, one love is the movement and we are the one hundred percent.
