SEARCHING All the modules to which you have access under your subscription will be listed in blue. These will include the monthly bulletins and any journals included in your subscription. You can use the tick boxes to select multiple titles to search across simultaneously. Alternatively click on the blue link for the individual module to search solely in that one text.
BASIC SEARCH: Use the Free Text search box when you need to search for terms which appear anywhere within the entire Encyclopedia.
You can access the List of Connectors from the top right-hand corner of the screen if you need a list of the search language that you can use on Westlaw. If you enter words using no connectors, Westlaw UK will automatically connect the words using an ‘AND’ connector and return all documents where your terms appear.

SEARCHING CONNECTORS YOU CAN USE ON WESTLAW UK:
Use the Search by Index Term box to search for terms which appear anywhere within the Encyclopedia Index. Westlaw UK’s helpful word wheel displays Index Terms as you type. Select the terms that you require and click on Search to retrieve your results. You will also be given the option to filter your results post-search if your terms are mentioned in more than one place within the Index

SEARCHING ADVANCED SEARCH:
Results List
Advanced Search allows you to run a more specific search by entering a Paragraph Number or a Form name.
Search results are sorted by Volume/Part. If you would prefer results to be sorted by relevance, simply click on the Sort by Relevance link in the top right-hand corner of the screen. You can use the Edit Search option in the top left-hand corner of the screen to edit your original search terms. Alternatively you can use the Search Within Results box at the top of the screen to narrow your results further.

BROWSING There are numerous ways of browsing the content of the Encyclopedias on Westlaw to help you find the content that you are looking for.
Use the Table of Contents option for a Volume/Part breakdown for the Encyclopedia. By selecting a specific part, you will see a more detailed breakdown for that section.
You can also browse for information cited within the Encyclopedia, for example cases or statutes. Simply click into the relevant table and browse through the citations alphabetically
At this stage you will be able to choose to either link into the primary content or link directly into the cited reference within the text of the Encyclopedia.

The most recent Release Bulletin for each module can be browsed and will appear in the Table of Contents. These include links through to updated Statutes, Statutory Instruments and Cases. The timings and update frequency of the Release Bulletin varies from module to module but occur at least three times a year, in line with the print products.
You can retrieve materials by entering terms into the Free Text, Subject/Keyword, Article Title or Author fields. Combining any of these fields will help you to achieve a more refined search. Monthly Bulletins and Journals (*subject to subscription)
An archive of Monthly Bulletins and Journals is available under your module list*. These can be browsed or searched across- simply click into the relevant publication.

Use the Term Defined field to find legal definitions in Journals. Advanced Search
You can further refine your search by entering additional information such as Cases Cited (party or citation), Legislation Cited or the Publication Year using the Advanced Search option. Browsing
You can choose to browse Bulletins and Journals by selecting a publication and then browsing further by year. View all articles published in that year alphabetically or continue browsing by issue.

CASES Clicking into a party name link within an Encyclopedia will take you through to a descriptive analysis document for that case. You can also link into this document from any direct case citation within the Encyclopedia. Don’t forget that you can always right-click on a link if you would like to open the primary content in a new tab or window. Each Case Analysis Document contains the following information (where applicable): • Summary of the case

At the top of each case document you will find a Status Icon telling you the status of a case. If there is no icon, this indicates that the case has never been judicially considered. - i ndicates that the decision has received positive or neutral judicial consideration and is good law - i ndicates that the decision has received mixed or mildly negative judicial consideration - i ndicates that at least one point of law has been overruled or reversed. This is an immediate notification that the case is no longer good law - i ndicates that this case has an appeal that is outstanding to the Court of Appeal (Civil Division) or Supreme Court, or that an application for permission to appeal is outstanding to the Supreme Court

LEGISLATION Selecting a legislation title will take you through to an Arrangement of Act/SI document which lists all of the provisions within a piece of legislation. You can also link into this document from any direct legislation citation within the Encyclopedia.
Next to each section heading and at the top of each provision, you will find a Status Icon telling you the status of the section. - indicates that the provision is current law in force You can use the section headings to link into any section which has been directly cited within the Encyclopedia. This will take you through to the current version of the section. The version in force tool will indicate the date on which this version was brought in to force, and if it is due to be amended, the date on which this version is due to change.
- indicates the provision is not yet in force - indicates the provision is partially in force - indicates the provision has amendments pending - indicates that the provision has been superseded - indicates that the provision has been repealed - indicates that the provision has prospective amendments applied to it

MANAGING YOUR RESULTS PRINT, DOWNLOAD OR EMAIL:
When viewing any Westlaw UK document, you will have the option to print, download or email your document to another user.
Alternatively you can print multiple documents from any search results screen or from the Table of Contents by clicking the check-boxes on the left-hand side of the screen to select the documents that you would like to print. Then simply select the envelope icon as before.
These options are available via the drop down arrow next to the envelope icon in the top right hand corner of the screen.
