Working from Home Office Design Ideas

By Alyssa Martin, Selections Consultant and Cabinet Designer for Golden Rule Builders, Inc.

A good workspace reflects your personality, is streamlined for the work you do, and can be so comfortable you may never want to leave. It is no surprise that most of us have been at home for the past few months and been thrown into creating a home-office work environment. Maybe you already have an existing workspace that could use a little help, or you are feeling uninspired and could use some ideas. We will cover some ways to utilize the space you have, some new arrangements you may not have thought of, as well as some decorative design suggestions that will help elevate your home office space.

If your household has more than one working member, you might want to create a home office with multiple workspaces. If this is the case for you, think about furnishing it with less bulky desks and desk chairs.

Determine who uses the space and for what function. Make sure there is a clear path to arrive to your workspace and once there, make sure it serves its purpose. You may find that some rooms have an identity crisis and need consolidating, organization, or purging. Having a true identified space will keep you focused if your office needs to be in the same space as others.

Pro Tip: When organizing you should sort ‘like items’ to make it more efficient and save space.

Still struggling with furniture? Think about small nooks like between two symmetrical closets or even the inside of a closet itself can become a great area to create a built in or to place a desk. All you need to do is remove the hanging rod and install a simple piece of shelf pine to create a desk. You can even provide a professional with the measurements and they can digitally create something special for you to view in a 3D format.

Pro Tip: If you opt to do this yourself plan ahead by measuring the widths of the inside of the closet.

Although feng shui practices will tell you differently, it is ideal to have a desk facing a window and is nice to see the elements and or have something to look out to. Consider positioning a small and beautiful desk at the end of the bed which will make for a practical multipurpose room. A desk in the bedroom should not be your first goal, but it isn’t uncommon that everyone is at home and may be nice to be able to close the door and have your own zone for those conference calls and Zoom meetings.

Play around a little with the placement. Instead of putting your desk up against the wall, try putting it perpendicular to the wall. This way you can sit at your desk, and not stare at the wall, you can admire the room around you. With smart space-planning and a little creativity you can function in the tiniest of places, at least for the time being.

Do not be afraid to use what you may already have and just make some modifications or heck go all out and build something in!

Pro Tip: Use two filing cabinets and drop a slab of wood or butcher block on top

My personal favorite and something that has the most impact on a home is a custom colored built in. You will not regret it and will always be a showstopper and adds value to your home. Regardless of how you decide to better function through a possible permanent home-office work environment, remember to be patient with yourself, have fun and when all else fails, hire a professional.
