HONOR ROLL OF DONORS 2022-2023 JULY 1, 2022 – JUNE 30, 2023
Dear Alumnae and Friends, It is my pleasure to present to you the Honor Roll of Donors for gifts and grants made to Sweet Briar College between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023. Thanks to the continued generosity and participation of alumnae, faculty, staff, students, parents and friends, Sweet Briar exceeded all of its fundraising goals for the 2022-2023 fiscal year. Sweet Briar’s philanthropic giving totaled more than $18 million from 3,207 donors. This included over $6.5 million to the Sweet Briar Fund, the College’s annual giving program, which primarily supports students, faculty, and operations. Restricted giving to specific scholarships and programs totaled more than $2 million. Finally, donors contributed over $10 million to Where Women Lead, Sweet Briar’s current campaign to support academic programs and scholars, capital improvements, and specific endowments that support the implementation of the College’s five-year strategic plan. Sweet Briar also tracks alumnae participation each year; the College exceeded its goal of 30 percent among degreed alumnae – well above the national average of 23 percent. In January, S&P Global affirmed Sweet Briar’s long-term bond rating of BB and revised the College’s outlook from stable to positive. As the fiscal year came to a close, we welcomed 80 members from the Class of 2023 to the alumnae community and celebrated classes of the 3’s and 8’s, welcoming home the largest group of alumnae to date (over 500) for Reunion since 2015. Sweet Briar College continues to provide an excellent, innovative and collaborative liberal arts education. This year, we are pleased to offer this digital honor roll and financial highlights from fiscal year 2023. FY 2023 Financial Highlights The following report highlights three key metrics from Sweet Briar’s financial audit for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2023. Below is a summary of the College’s revenues and expenses, and the following pages summarize Sweet Briar’s balance sheet and endowment. The chart below provides an overview of Sweet Briar’s revenue and expenses for fiscal year 2023. Revenues include student revenues, private fundraising, including restricted and spendable gifts, and endowment spending, among other sources. Student revenues are comprised of income from tuition, room and board; and private fundraising includes unrestricted and restricted current-use gifts to the College. Endowment spending allocation represents income from the endowment portfolio to support operations of the College. Sweet Briar is pleased to report another positive fiscal year with revenues of $41,034,157 exceeding expenses of $33,748,938. The excess of revenues over expenses is comprised of a small operating surplus, restricted gifts and pledges, and portfolio gains and losses.

FY 2023 Financial Highlights This chart summarizes Sweet Briar’s balance sheet for fiscal year 2022 and 2023. Total net assets in FY23 were $135,018,636, a 7% increase from the previous year. In both FY22 and FY23, the College’s balance sheet has positive net equity, an indicator of the College’s strong financial standing. Land and buildings were up $3,480,625 net of depreciation due to construction. Liabilities were down $2,248,235 due to debt payments.

FY 2023 Financial Highlights About the Endowment
The endowment represents the generosity and commitment of Sweet Briar donors, who through their gifts over the past several decades, have helped ensure financial viability for Sweet Briar. As reflected in the chart on page 3, student revenues provide only a portion of the income needed to offer an innovative, liberal arts education, and therefore, private fundraising plays an increasingly vital role in sustaining the life and mission of Sweet Briar College. The endowment comprises more than 300 individually endowed funds. A large portion of these funds have specific donor-designated restrictions on their purpose and use. The remainder of funds are considered “unrestricted,” allowing Sweet Briar to support students, faculty and programs in a variety of ways. Sweet Briar partners with Fund Evaluation Group (FEG) to invest endowment assets in a diversified portfolio, and income from these investments provides long-term financial support for the College. The chart below summarizes the total market value of the endowment over the past five fiscal years. The market value is the cumulative total of gifts received, adjusted for investment portfolio gains or losses, and distributions for college operations. As of June 30, 2023, the College’s endowment market value was $69,913,212, a 2.5% increase from the previous year and nearing pre-pandemic values. We are grateful for our donors who have provided gifts of endowment and are leaving a lasting legacy at Sweet Briar College.

New Howell Lykes Colton ’38 Stables Residents Sweet Briar is home to one of the country’s most renowned equestrian programs, and for decades, our program has set the standard for collegiate riding. We offer among the finest indoor and outdoor riding facilities and a well-schooled string of horses with wins and placings in USEF-rated competitions. During the 2022-2023 fiscal year, donors provided the Sweet Briar Riding Program with 10 new horses.
