“There have been so many significant developments at LCIS since I attended, and that is due to the tremendous support of our community over the years. Thanks to this vision and generosity, my own daughter is now benefitting. We feel that collectively contributing financial support with other parents sustains and continues to build the educational platform of LCIS for our children now and in the future. Cindy Roberts-Newell (1977-82), Parent of Grade 9 Student

sporting and service experiences, all within a diverse community of teachers and students. Right now, we are beginning a journey to further transform our students by building new facilities that will enhance these learning experiences. As we work to fulfil our Strategic Vision and Master Plan, we depend more than ever upon the support of our community. The partnerships, volunteer hours and gifts of our community members all play a critical role in the success of this endeavour. What gives us confidence that we are on the right path? Our admissions inquiries continue to grow each year. Our IB Diploma results remain above the international average. Graduates continue to receive scholarships and offers at their first-choice colleges and universities. Our strong financial aid programme ensures the diversity of our community, and hundreds of talented teachers apply to work at our school every year. Momentum is growing for LCIS to fully realise its potential to become the leader in international education for the Caribbean region. Through your investment in our school, we continue to develop our facilities, programmes and people, aiming to create a nurturing learning environment where our students’ lives are forever changed.

I am pleased to share the 2015-16 Annual Report of Lyford Cay International School (LCIS), which celebrates the support you gave our school over the past year.

We are looking forward to the future and are grateful for your unwavering support. Thank you for supporting the mission of LCIS, and for helping us to take the next step in our journey.

Your support is what enables LCIS to be so successful and special. Since 1962, our community of parents, neighbours and business partners has enabled us to create a school where children thrive. Today, thanks to our longstanding relationships, we are an accredited International Baccalaureate (IB) school with strong academic results, as measured by internationally normed standardised tests and our impressive university acceptances around the globe. We also have an extensive track record of nurturing happy and balanced children who follow their passions and grow up to make a difference in the world. At LCIS, children receive well-rounded preparation for life, preparation that includes rigorous academics, in-depth study in the arts, and numerous

A LETTER FROM THE

BUSINESS MANAGER Bathsheba Fernander

This letter, in conjunction with the adjacent graphs and table, gives a summary of the school’s financial structure and a brief overview of this past year’s operating finances. The school has two main revenue streams: tuition dollars for operational expenses and donations which are for projects that are above and beyond what tuition can sustain. Tuition revenue is specifically used to cover operating costs such as insurance, utilities, accreditation and membership fees, instructional materials, exam fees, maintenance for buildings and grounds and staff costs. Staff expenses represent about three-quarters of the expenditures, which is on-par with international schools worldwide.

8

The school’s operating budget governs the allocation of tuition dollars in the above areas. Each fall, the budget for the following school year is prepared by the school’s management team. It is then reviewed by the Board’s Finance Committee to ensure that there is no waste or inefficiencies and that tuition increases are kept to a minimum. Finally, the budget is approved by the full Board in January. The Finance Committee is also

responsible for monitoring the implementation of the budget throughout the year. The Board receives financial reports of the school’s operations at each meeting. Annually, the school’s financial status is validated by an external auditing firm, currently Deloitte, and this is done in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). The report is always available in the Business Office for those interested in viewing. At the end of the last fiscal year, our tuition revenue exceeded budget by 2% thanks to our robust enrolment. The additional revenue enabled us to exceed our planned budget in the areas of operations & maintenance. As you know, our current campus is an aging one, and each year we are required to make more and more repairs to ensure that our students have a safe and conducive environment in which to learn. The Finance Committee is committed to ensuring that LCIS continues to be a financially stable institution.

THE ANNUAL FUND

Strategic Funding to Impact Student Experiences We are proud to celebrate the 10th anniversary of our Annual Fund. Our community’s strong history of giving has allowed LCIS to have a truly lasting impact on all of the students who have passed through our doors, and secures the same transformative experiences for those here now and those yet to come. The Annual Fund is a forward fund. Funds raised in the current year are used to support the implementation of the Strategic Vision throughout the following school year. The

Annual Fund does not fill holes in the operating budget. The lights are not on because of it and staff salaries are not paid with it. LCIS is in an elite group of schools worldwide that do not use donations to supplement the current year’s operational budget. Our Annual Fund allows us to enhance our programmes and curriculum, ensuring that LCIS continues to provide our students with the finest educational opportunities in the region.

CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS: FACILITIES

The master plans for both our current campus and future Upper School campus were approved by the Board earlier this year. As part of our plan to renovate our current campus, several projects were undertaken this summer, with some having already been successfully completed. $226,761 was raised towards the new kitchen project at the Annual Gala Dinner & Auction in March. With this incredible support, construction of the facility began during the summer and will soon be completed. LCIS is pleased to be able to offer its students healthy and delicious meals from this new state-of-the-art facility. Additionally, thanks to generous support of the Annual Fund, renovations were made to our ELC classrooms during the summer, creating a better learning environment with improvements in space and lighting. The upgrading of these facilities goes hand-in-hand with LCIS’s strategic plan to grow its Early Learning Centre to include a Nursery programme for children as young as two years old. 14

In the Secondary School, new furniture was purchased and minor renovations were made to these classrooms to maximise use of space. The furniture was also specifically selected to allow more opportunities for group learning, an important aspect of the International Baccalaureate curriculum. New lockers were also installed to ensure that students have adequate space to store school items between classes. EUROPE

“The improvements done have maximised space and improved the organisation and flow of the classroom. It now allows for the use of multiple seating arrangements that facilitate greater participation and collaboration and, hence, enhances the teaching/learning experience. Janice Barclay, MYP Math Teacher

ARTS

Donations to the Annual Fund support Educational Enhancements which increase the quality of our curriculum and programmes. As part of our strategic vision, LCIS has made a deep commitment to expanding students’ exposure to the arts. In recent years, this has been done through the school’s support of the LCIS Art Institute, which brings locally and internationally renowned artists to the classroom, as well as several other initiatives. These experiences are truly transformative and give our students hands-on experience in the fine and performing arts. This year, LCIS has teamed up with the acclaimed Bahamas Artist Movement to offer a co-curricular activity and an elective focusing on developing students’ acting skills. The school hopes to develop the various interests of its students, knowing that well-rounded and balanced students perform at a much higher level all around.

“I am so pleased LCIS is committed to the Arts. The LCIS curriculum embraces the education of the whole child. Our children excel on and off the stage because of the well-rounded education they receive at LCIS.” Rowena Jones, Parent of a Grade 7 and Grade 1 Student

Learning in a diverse community is an educational imperative. Collaborating with peers of different cultural backgrounds not only enriches the learning experience, but contributes to open mindedness, a key component of the International Baccalaureate Programme. At LCIS, a robust financial aid programme helps ensure social and economic diversity. Donations to the Annual Fund make LCIS a reality for a greater number of qualified Bahamian students, further increasing the diversity and richness of our student body. The funds raised in the 2015-16 fiscal year will be awarded to students applying in 2016-17 and used for tuition remuneration in the 2017-18 fiscal year. Raising money over a year in advance of the time it will be used provides stability and predictability to our financial aid programme, benefiting both the recipients and the school. The percentage of tuition paid by financial aid has ranged from 5%-100%, and since 2008, an annual average of just over $7,600 has been awarded to each applicant. Distributing more than $220,000 annually, the programme supports an average of 30 students yearly. Since 2002, it has helped 62 different families and 88 individual students at LCIS. This financial assistance has enabled students to gain a high-quality education and to matriculate to some of the best universities in the world.

In 2015-16, the programme was expanded to include named scholarships and bursary awards, in addition to our traditional need-based awards for financial aid. • Named Scholarships: These scholarships are awarded to students who are able to contribute in specific ways to the school community and add socioeconomic diversity, but may not qualify for sufficient aid in the need-based category. • Bursary Awards: These awards assist with the additional costs of attendance for students receiving financial aid. We were also able to accomplish the following in the 2015-16 school year through the Financial Aid Programme: • • • • •

A total of $166,243 in financial aid was awarded 32 students applied for financial aid 15 students have been enrolled with funding The average award was $11,083 Awards ranged from 25% to 85% of total tuition

As LCIS looks forward to the construction of the new Upper School campus, raising funds for scholarships and financial aid will come to the forefront, with many more opportunities to impact Bahamian youth. LCIS plans to greatly increase its reach and impact in the community in the coming years, by investing a further $1.5 million into its financial-aid and scholarship endowment.

“An LCIS education is without a doubt an optimal start on the journey through life, with more doors opening with every other step. After graduating from LCIS, I completed four years of study in Glasgow, Scotland, graduating with a BA (Hons) in Finance, Investment and Risk Management. Then, I completed an MSc in Financial Communication at the University of Lugano, Switzerland. Recently, I started working at Julius Baer here in Nassau. The IB programme at LCIS raised my expectations of what life could be like after high school and forced me to exceed limits and aim high. Eronjha Adderley, LCIS Class of 2008

Thank You to The Lyford Cay Foundation

The School has a $1.1 million endowment with the Lyford Cay Foundation. Currently, 20% of the financial aid and scholarships budget is endowed. The annual disbursement from this endowment fund is added to the Annual Fund and distributed to assist qualified Bahamian families.

Lyford Cay International School (LCIS) held its first ever Swing for Scholarships event on Friday 10 June 2016 and successfully raised $31,000 toward the school’s Financial-Aid and Scholarship Programme that allows qualified Bahamian students to attend LCIS. 40 local golf enthusiasts took part in the event - a fourperson team scramble - at the beautiful Lyford Cay Club Golf Course. 100% of the proceeds from team sponsorships went directly to support the Financial-Aid and Scholarship Fund at LCIS, thanks to the incredible generosity of Master Sponsor CornèrTrader. Dr Michele Clivio, CEO of Cornèr Bank (Overseas) Ltd, shared the bank’s excitement in partnering with LCIS: “CornèrTrader, in conjunction with Cornèr Bank (Overseas) Ltd, is delighted to assist LCIS through its sponsorship of the Swing for Scholarships event. It is because of Cornèr Bank’s firm belief in education and creating life-changing opportunities for Bahamian students and families that we were delighted to invest in this event that promises a great return for the Bahamian community.” LCIS intends to make the Swing for Scholarships an annual event, and will continue to look forward to the support of its corporate and individual sponsors. LCIS provides a challenging and transformative education, and with the support of a generous community, many more Bahamian students will enjoy the lifelong success that an LCIS education allows.

A Letter from the Co-Chairs of the Board of Directors, Bruce Fernie and Bryan Glinton Over the past year, the Board of Directors and Governors, along with our administrative team, volunteers, architects and construction professionals, has been hard at work finalising and implementing the master plan for the development of the facilities of Lyford Cay International School (LCIS). For several years now, we have examined our strengths as a school and areas where our programmes need to grow. We created a Strategic Vision to drive our growth over the next 5-6 years and are delighted that we are now in full-swing with the preparations to build some tremendous new facilities that will allow that vision to be fully implemented. Many improvements, supported by the Annual Fund, have been taking place on our current campus for the past two years. We redesigned hardscape and landscape elements of the campus to improve aesthetics and the usability of outdoor spaces. We renovated the ELC, creating a brand new classroom and improving building layout, roofs and lighting. We built a new kitchen facility to improve the quality of our food services on campus, one that will soon open and eventually connect seamlessly to the Lower School’s new multi-purpose space. We have done so much with your support so far.

been cleared. Architects Cooper Robertson near completion of the schematic drawing phase and continue to partner with project managers from Construction Cost Engineering and local architects Bruce LaFleur and Associates. We are engaging engineers and surveyors to prepare the land for construction drawings and eventual groundbreaking. Groundbreaking will occur once we have commitments for the balance of funds needed for Phase One. Once construction begins, we will be about 18 months away from opening. Reaching our fundraising goal is the most important factor in determining the opening date of the Upper School campus. It will take the timely and significant support of parents and community members to achieve the soonest possible move-in date. So thank you, on behalf of the Board of Directors and Governors, to all of you who are playing a role in this major undertaking. We are grateful for your support and excited for the progress you are helping us to make on a daily basis.

“Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir people’s blood, and probably, themselves will not be realised. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work. Remember that our sons and daughters, grandsons and granddaughters, are going to do things that would stagger us. Let your watchword be order and your beacon beauty.” Daniel Hudson Burnham (1864-1912)

This donor listing recognises commitments made before the close of the last fiscal year on 31 July 2016.
