WELCOME

To say I’m bursting with excitement about this INSPIRE Journal from Sweet to the Soul FAITH is an understatement. The dreaming and planning among two friends started more than a year ago over a glass of sweet tea, a notebook full of ideas and much prayer. Today, I stand in awe at God’s goodness and provision as He took a dream project and turned it into this beautiful quarterly journal. He is the Master who takes what we deem impossible and makes it possible. I believe the words compiled through these pages are anointed by the Holy Spirit and will touch your heart. After the year we’ve all experienced, it feels good to see newness of life emerge as we prepare for this summer season. Now is the best time to take a step back, rest, refuel, and spend precious moments with family and friends. With that in mind, each section was created for you. From devotions to feature stories to home, family, and more, you will sense God’s presence throughout. I pray you are able to retreat to your quiet place and savor the contents. I am thankful for each of you and pray you are blessed beyond measure. Hugs,

Soul Friends

If I could offer you a seat on my porch and a cool glass of sweet tea so we could walk though the pages of The INSPIRE Journal slowly, together, talking about each article, story, photo and devo, I would friend. Maybe I can’t fit all of us on my real porch, but friends, know that there is a seat reserved just for you on our virtual porch. And bring a friend or two with you. When God gave me the dream of Sweet To The Soul FAITH, my first call was to my sweet, patient, supportive friend Mitzi. Thankfully, she did not hang up on me. But rather, invested much love, prayer and time right along side of me. My hope for this journal has always been that it is much more than a magazine that just sits on your table. It is not meant to display and look pretty (although, those sunflowers!). It is meant to be lived with and loved on. To be written in and dog eared. To be a resource, not entertainment. My prayer is that FAITH lives where you live, where you spend your time with God, where you go to rest and be restored. But even more than that, I pray you find God in the words and scriptures shared here and I pray that He speaks to your soul. So welcome Soul Friends, welcome to the first issue of Sweet To The Soul FAITH. Let your soul be inspired.

Blessings,

JODIE BARRETT

In a world filled with half-truths and propaganda, it is easy to become a skeptic, secondguessing what we read and hear. Consider the many forms of information we allow to infiltrate our thoughts. News, both written and spoken, numerous social media outlets, friends, family, and even strangers sharing stories and opinions. Billboards, commercials, books, blogs, and you get the point, our world is full of information that can affect how we think and feel, and influence what we believe about ourselves. As believers, we can trust the Bible to be the infallible word of God. We can believe that what the Bible says is the truth. According to 2 Timothy 3:16 (NIV), “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” As we break this verse apart,

12

S WEET T O T HE S OUL FAITH | S UMMER 2021

let us begin with pausing to notice the first word of the passage - all. “All” leaves nothing out. That means everything is included and this case, every scripture is God-breathed. Our God is incapable of sin and thus incapable of false teaching and lies. Continue in our passage and we find that the truthfilled words of God are useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training. Given this, we can trust all the words recorded in the Bible and believe them to be of great benefit. Therefore, it is important and beneficial to glean from God’s Word every day. With the truth of His Word in our heart, God enables us to battle the false things of this world.

When fallacies flood our thoughts and leave us feeling inferior and incapable, we have a powerful weapon to slay the lies the world leaves us believ-

ing. Our weapon is the mighty Word of God. God’s truth says many things about who we are in Christ. And because the Word is God-breathed, we can trust that we are all God’s says we are. You are an overcomer. (1 John 5:5) You are rescued. (Colossians 1:13) You are free from condemnation. (Romans 8:1) You are chosen. (Ephesians 1:4) You are a dwelling place for God. (1 John 4:15)

YOU ARE ALL THAT GOD’S WORD SAYS YOU ARE! But how often do we struggle to believe the truth? While the Bible tells us we are strong, the world would have us believe we are weak. While the Lord says, we are chosen, the world shouts we are unwanted. Standing right there, eager to watch us trust these lies, is Satan himself. What God has come to give; Satan wants to steal.

Both shook their heads no. I understood. At 45 years-old, I still struggled with believing these words from Song of Solomon 4:7. I explained to them that God looks upon us and sees Jesus covering our sins, and thus, He sees no flaws within us. Our perfect Savior, Jesus, has cast them away from us. Once we were done with our worship and devotion time, I asked the girls again as we packed away the mirror, “Do you believe that you are all beautiful to God?” Both nodded yes. The Truth of God’s word had squashed a lie they were carrying in their hearts. Both girls were now armed and ready to combat the lies of the enemy. Both were ready to trust that they were all God’s word says they are. When we know where to turn for Truth, we can shatter the lies of the world. No matter our age, God’s word is a powerful weapon to protect our hearts, minds, and souls.

The truth of God’s word is useful in rebuking the lies of our Enemy.

When we arm our hearts with God’s word we can:

Combat the lies of the Enemy.

We must stay alert, for as much as God desires we fill our hearts with truth, Satan wants to twist that same truth into lies that tempt us to turn from righteous living. He wants nothing less than for us to be trapped by his schemes, so we turn from righteous living. We find this demonstrated in Genesis 1 when Satan spews lies to Eve causing her to disregard God’s instruction, and again in the wilderness when Jesus was fasting for 40 days. But just as Jesus’ firm knowledge of the Truth kept Him from believing the lies of Satan, the Word of God, stored in our hearts, can do the same for us.

Live freely, stepping into the life God has prepared for us.

Navigate the false teaching of the world.

Saturating our minds with scripture leaves us empowered to slay the lies of the Devil. But many struggle to believe we are all God says we are. One Fall, while speaking at a MotherDaughter Retreat, two young girls helped me carry things from my jeep to the worship center. I brought a large mirror with the words, “All beautiful you are” written across the front. As the girls read the mirror, I asked, “Do you believe that?”

WE CAN TRUST THAT WE ARE ALL THAT GOD SAYS WE ARE.

MICHELLE NIETERT

If you or your daughter are struggling right now, these six ways to help your girls through difficult times might be just what you need today. Let’s look at how you can be there for your daughter in her time of need. Nothing will grow you, test you, or bless you like being a parent. This doesn’t mean that parenting is always beautiful. Sometimes our children go through hard times and look to us for support, guidance, and nurturing. As moms, there are ways to reach out to our girls with help and hope when they need us most. Let’s look at six ways we can help our girls through difficult times.

1.

When we are overwhelmed, it’s hard to absorb information. The time to arm our daughters with the Word is before they will need it. Teaching our girls to know and love God’s Word is the first defense in a world that is seeking to destroy their confidence in themselves and the God who loves them. You can be an example for her today. Let your daughter see you reading the Bible and tell her the verses that have given you strength. Help her to hide God’s word in her heart so that she won’t sin against Him. Even when you can’t be there to protect her, the Word can give her a place to stand when all things seem shaky.

Now, more than ever, our daughters are looking to us for reassurance. They need to feel not only our strength but the peace that passes understanding–the peace only Christ can provide. When we pray for our daughters we are prompting our Father to move on their behalf. But when we pray with our daughters we are showing them how to turn to God when life seems overwhelming and we don’t have the answers.

Prayer not only changes situations, but it changes us and it will change our daughters as well. If you struggle with knowing what to pray with your daughter, start simple. Ask her to share one thing that she feels concerned about. You can also make a list of family and friends she wants to pray for and then pray for them by name. Finally, praying the scriptures is a great way to claim God’s promises. Simply choose one or two scriptures you feel speak best to your (and your daughter’s) needs and verbalize them as prayer. Remember, your Heavenly Father isn’t expecting perfection and neither is your child. If you messily, lose your train of thought or even giggle, you are modeling for her transparency and sharing our inner thoughts helps us heal. He is always listening and ready to show His love.

14

S WEET T O T HE S OUL FAITH | S UMMER 2021

We all need soul care. Our daughters are no different. Rest and stillness recharge our minds, hearts, and bodies. Now is the time to let your daughter see you pursuing a thriving relationship with God and others. Share with your girl what your devotional time looks like. Tell her about times when God has answered your prayers. Support her by giving her space to build community and teach her why it’s important to have Christian friendships. We are made to build each other up. Build up your daughter in her faith and you’ll be building up her bond not only with you, but also with God.

We have reached a time when our kids face more distractions than ever before. School, friends, social media, news, all the things that pull at us daily pull at our girls as well. Don’t wait for your daughter to come to you with her worries and fears. Go to her! Step into her daily life and meet her where she is. Can you set aside a special time every day to check in and see how she’s doing? Maybe a girls lunch once or twice a week would be a special way to let her know you value her and you’re there to support her.

Research says we become most like the five people closest to us. In Titus 2, verses 3-4, we see Paul instructing the older women to be good examples and to encourage the young women to love their husbands and their children. Raising kids takes a village. Maybe you are struggling yourself or worried about your girl. Reaching out to others takes courage but helps us not carry our worries alone. We were created to live and thrive in community. Our girls are watching us. I know I want my teen to reach out to other wise adults when my voice falls on deaf ears.

Distraction–it’s everywhere. If we’re not intentional we can fly through our days only to close our eyes and realize we missed the most important things, and people. It’s easy to make excuses about schedules, deadlines, priorities. But knowing our children intimately should always be at the top of our list. We make time for what’s important. Show your daughter that she is important and worth your time. Make time to listen to her and truly see her. Ask the hard questions. Find out what she thinks and how she feels and validate her feelings. Kids today need a soft place to land first. Take a moment if you tend to want to correct and judge first. Let her know you want to be there for her in every situation. Time passes quickly. In the blink of an eye our daughters will be grown following God’s call and plan for their own lives. The relationships we build today will affect our family for generations to come. Let’s leave a legacy of love. MICHELLE NIETERT has been a professional counselor for 20 years and owns a counseling center in the Dallas area. Previously, she served as a crisis counselor for a large school district. WHAT IF WE COULD TEACH OUR CHILDREN NOT TO BE AFRAID?

P SALM 112:7 NIV

Is that even possible? If so, wouldn’t it have to start with us? As a mother, I failed at this for many years because I lived in fear of an enemy. In my quest to guard my family from this adversary, I remained in an anxious state much of the time. This was due to my heightened senses scanning the horizon, looking for any sign of the enemy approaching and calculating what must be done if that were so. My greatest fear was that I would be caught off guard and not know what to do, thereby worsening the affects of the harm against my children. Without knowing it, I was teaching my children to fear this foe as well. Our enemy had several names, all equally intimidating- problems,

16

trouble, or suffering. The very thought of them made me want to work all the more diligently so that my children were protected, which really meant that I was protected. You see, my greatest heartache was the heartache of one of my kids.

Through a series of lessons, He showed me their lack of power over the life of a believer. Consequently, we do not need to live in fear of them but we do need to be equipped for them.

There’s a saying that you are only as happy as your saddest child. The daily goal of making sure no one was sad became second nature to me. It wasn’t long before I was feeling exhausted from this process, not to mention feeling a failure at it.

Problems, trouble, and suffering are really only tools and depending on who is understood as being in control of them, they are used either for us or against us. If we believe that God as our loving Father is in control of them, then we see their limitations and purpose.

Graciously, God showed me the error of my ways.

If we believe that they are weapons in the hand of our real enemy Satan, then we live in fear of them and their potential to wreck havoc in our lives. Satan means to use pain in the lives of believers to become something we want to avoid at all cost. I fell for this as a mother hook, line and sinker. What I failed to understand is this:

Redefining My Enemy By definition, a problem is a matter or situation regarded as unwelcome or harmful and needing to be dealt with and overcome. Inadvertently, I had allowed “problems” to become viewed as our enemy but that isn’t the way God sees them. There are no “problems” in His eyes, only opportunities. Because God is sovereign, nothing presents itself as an issue to Him and that includes our problems. In fact, the term “subjugation” means the action of bringing someone or something under domination or control. That is exactly what God does regarding any and every issue facing His children. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28 NIV In essence, because of our relationship with God through His Son Jesus, sin and death are subjugated and no longer a threat to us. If God reigns over them, then we need not fear them.

Understanding My Real Enemy

What happens to us is not as important as Who reigns over us. Understanding My Advocate Jesus Himself conveyed what our attitudes should be regarding problems in life. Why I was living contrary to this is still a mystery to me. He said in John 16:33 NIV, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” When I was exhausting myself trying to avoid trouble, God showed me how ridiculous that was as a goal. He used the story of the disciples straining at the oars in Mark 6:45-48 NIV. “Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsai-

S UMMER 2021 | S WEET T O T HE S OUL FAITH

17

da, while he dismissed the crowd. After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray. Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake.” God brought this passage to mind in order to show me the intentionality of my Savior. He “made” the disciples get into that boat knowing full well that what awaited them was a storm! The thought of that was shocking for me as a mother. How could Jesus knowingly choose to send the disciples into trouble?

It’s like going to the gym. Would we ever be able to grow in our strength and endurance without straining against weight machines or the treadmill? Absolutely not. Therefore, problems are the instrument God uses to grow our abilities to endure and overcome. The more times we encounter trouble, the greater the lessons He teaches us and this ultimately brings about our freedom. This freedom isn’t based upon a trouble-free existence but in our ability to exercise faith whenever we encounter fear or pain.

What was even more puzzling was how He waited to come to their rescue! The passage says He “saw the disciples straining” and yet He did not rush out to solve their problem. He waited even after He knew they were in trouble. Why?

Because Jesus is our Advocate, NOTHING can enter our life unless it goes through His nail pierced hands. We can trust the Man who died for us!

What God was teaching me was the purpose of problems in the life of a believer. Jesus allowed the problem of the storm so that His beloved disciples could learn that His peace was not conditional, which is better than peace due to calm waters.

As I began to understand how powerless problems truly were over my family and the God-given purpose they had instead, my perspective shifted radically. Instead of living in fear, trying to protect my children from trouble, I gave myself, and my family, over to His All-Knowing, All-Loving, All-Powerful hands. Whatever came our way was meant to glorify His name or edify our life.

You see, I was like the disciples in the boat. I was the one straining at the oars trying to avoid the wind and the waves against us. I was equating problems with the unavoidable waves in the ocean. If you had asked me if it was possible to avoid waves in the sea, I would have said absolutely not. Yet, I was foolishly trying to avoid the inescapable problems that are as natural in life as waves are in the ocean. The answer isn’t life without trouble so that we don’t have reason to fear but to understand trouble as God views it. It is the norm therefore

18

the answer is to view it for the purpose He has for it.

S WEET T O T HE S OUL FAITH | S UMMER 2021

Resting in His Assurance

If the Author and Perfecter saw fit to allow storms, then it was for His purpose and our good. We would come out stronger on the other side of each and every one. Our calling was to realize that problems only serve to set us free. As a believer, there are truly only two options when thinking about what awaits us around a corner. Instead of worrying over what MAY

happen, we can already determine that either He will either get us through it or He will take us home. Either way, we are covered in His tender faithfulness. He cannot nor will not abandon us.

Whatever is in store for us tomorrow, He is already there waiting to help us through it. Psalm 112:7 NIV can describe our demeanor because we finally understand the subjugation of our “enemy” and the power Jesus has over all that concerns us. “They will have no fear of

bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.” When we have no fear of bad news, then we are able to teach our children the same reality of life lived in the embrace of Jesus Christ, where no problem can separate us from His powerful love. What an opportunity that would be to raise the next generation so that they would not fear problems or hardship like we have. Instead, they would meet them head-on with confidence in their Savior and security in His purpose. Each and every trial would only serve to make them stronger and freer. Now that is a legacy worth sharing.

S EVEN F AVORITE C HRISTIAN C HILDREN ’ S B OOKS TO S HARE MONICA BARD

I’m a book lover and my great joy is sharing the books I love with those I love, particularly the littles in my life. Sometimes my gifts are met with a three-year old’s side eye glance and skeptical look. Yes, I am that great aunt who gives Christian children’s books as birthday gifts. Lacking the sparkle and glitter, or engines that roar, a book may seem irrelevant to a little one and tossed aside in the moment. But I trust and hope that over time each book will inspire a love of reading and create a foundational tenet on which to build their faith. As Christians we are called to be in community, within our families and our churches, thus we are part of the village of the children in our community. Every child has a village--those around them that directly or indirectly model choices and impact a child’s beliefs. As believers, we each play a role in training up a child in the way he should go so that when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 (ESV). Gifting Christian children’s books to celebrate the birth of a new baby, as birthday gifts and Christmas gifts is my way of fulfilling that role. Do these gifts make an impact? My 10 year-old great nephew is a voracious reader, his mind exploring a bigger world than just that around him. My nieces read those birthday gifts to their littles at bedtime. My 29 year-old daughter has entire bookshelves of books I’ve given her since birth, and she’s chosen a life dedicated to missionary work. Every birthday, every Christmas, Easter, and many special moments were celebrated with the perfectly relevant, faith-based book. Sometimes it’s still a new Christian children’s book that just feels right. My eyes are always peeled searching for the best new releases and I love combing through the oldies, but goodies. Classics that resonate no matter the age. I’ve created my list of favorites and I’m tickled to share them with you. 20

INFANT AND TODDLER GIFTS “Love You Forever” by Robert Munsch Written thirty-five years ago, this book has fast become a classic. It’s especially appropriate for baby and toddler boys since it celebrates the love between a boy and his mother. However, my sister gifted this to me when my daughter was born. As a mom that loves to rock and sing lullabies, the lullaby throughout this book speaks to every mother’s heart and speaks words of affirmation every child needs to hear repeatedly. “Wherever You Are…my love will find you” by Nancy Tillman Nancy Tillman has authored a number of beautiful children’s books. While not intentionally faith-based, the messages are inspiring. I urge you to check them all out, but this is my favorite--especially for girls. Our little girls often contend with stereotypes, but what if God made them to be different? My favorite phrase of this book encourages girls to soar… climb any mountain… climb up to the sky! My love will find you. My love can fly!” As my daughter grew into a young adult, this book was dusted off and re-read by both of us as she prepared to study abroad and lead mission trips on the other side of the world. My heart just smiles when I re-read this phrase… “don’t be afraid to march to the front of your own parade.” “Today and Always, This is True, God Loves You” by Holley Gerth Newer on the scene of Christian children’s books, this lift-the-flap board book captures an infant and toddler’s attention while a baby bear and his mom reveal how God uniquely created each part of us and how God loves every single trait. What I love about this book is the perfect opportunity it presents to correlate your infant’s discovery of their body--think ears, eyes, and toes-while reinforcing the message of God’s love. The lilting title summarizes the story with a fun surprise at the end, and quickly becomes the perfect phrase to include in bedtime prayers. FOR AGES 4 AND UP “The Crippled Lamb” by Max Lucado with Jenna, Andrea, and Sara Lucado Particularly appropriate for ages 4-8, this book celebrates God’s special purpose for each of His children. Joshua, the lamb, and Abigail, the cow, model friendship from two different perspectives--the one feeling left out and the one befriending. In a world challenged with increased bullying, this Gold

Medallion Book Award winner, though published in 1994, is a timely look at the difficulties of childhood, whether it’s being different, feeling left out, or bullying. “The Marvelous Mud House” by April Graney This is a newcomer to the children’s book section filled with life lessons and teachable moments. Comparing American materialism to contentment in Kenya, a mission trip opens the eyes of the American children. I love how this book spotlights the benefits of mission trips. Connecting different cultures, broadening the vision and understanding of our children, the real-life focus on contentment, and supporting others are key takeaways about our calling and responsibilities as believers. One unique note--the author and her family returned to Kenya in February 2021 to revisit George and Mama George, the real-life subjects in this book! “The Tale of Three Trees” retold by Angela Elwell Hunt A traditional folk tale, this book focuses on dreams that just don’t seem to come true. But this message is abundantly clear: God is always working His plans for us behind the scenes and His dreams are always bigger than ours. While perfect for reading to children’s groups at Christmas and Easter, this book is a beautiful year-round reminder to each of us that God has good plans for us, plans to give us hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 (ESV). “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” by C. S. Lewis A classic, perfect for ages 8-12, this book is a terrific read for adults, too! This is part of a sevenbook series titled “The Chronicles of Narnia,” but if you read no other book in this series, at least read this one. Set in the fantasy world of Narnia, Lewis weaves a tale that captivates young and old readers alike, while simultaneously teaching about the greatest love of all… Jesus Christ’s willing sacrifice to pay the ultimate price for our sins. A page-turning read that retells one of the most well- known verses in the Bible, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 (ESV). My daughter reads this every Christmas. My best friend and I read this book and several others in the series. It’s just that good! Some of my favorite childhood memories with my daughter were the hours spent in bookstores, scanning the children’s section, and reading together. I pray this list of favorite children’s books will be the start of making memories with the young ones in your life and the foundation for creating a legacy of faith for this generation and the ones to come.

Writing Scripture JANA KENNEDY-SPICER

I’ve read that “writing is medicine for your mind.”

1.

If you find yourself anxious or overwhelmed, journaling your thoughts is a great way to improve clarity and focus.

Grab a blank journal, spiral notebook or blank index cards.

2.

A simple pen or pencil will do.

3.

Select which Scripture to write.

I would also testify that Scripture is holy medicine for one’s soul. When these two mind and soul tonics are combined, our anxious thoughts can be replaced with the calming assurances of God’s Word.

Choose a book of the Bible or a section and determine how much you will write and how frequent.

Here are a few benefits I have realized from the time spent writing Scripture.

Research Scriptures related to a specific topic you want to study.

CALMS ANXIETY - as your focus switches from anxious and worrisome thoughts to concentration on each written word of Scripture. Slow down even more by contemplating the meaning of each word.

Use one of our Scripture Reading Lists, and write a scripture a day during the summer.

AIDS IN MEMORIZATION - as you are more intently focused on the words when writing instead of just reading. Is Scripture memory your goal? Then write the same Scripture verse several times until you can write it from memory. IMPROVES MEMORY RECALL - immersing your mind in Scriptures allows for them to be more easily recalled in moments of distress or need. GROWTH IN UNDERSTANDING - as time is spent with God, the Holy Spirit aids us in discernment of God’s Word. Want to learn more? Spend a few extra minutes looking up each verse in a Bible Commentary or similar resource and notate your learnings. Are you ready to begin writing Scripture? It’s very easy to get started.

24

Want to get a little more creative?

1.

Devote a full page in your journal for each Scripture and use a creative lettering style to write out the verse.

2.

Add a sketch or doodles or colorful stickers to the page.

3.

Use colorful markers, pencils, pens or watercolor paints on your journal page.

The possibilities are endless! Writing Scripture is a wonderful way to spend time with God in His Word. You will be blessed. “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked ... but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.” Psalm 1:1-2

JANA KENNEDY-SPICER

We were running late and I was already impatient so when my daughter did not want to get in the car, but rather wanted to walk to school, my snippy response didn't really help the situation. Walking to school meant a few minutes of freedom to my daughters. To me, it was half a mile out of my sight and an opportunity for anyone wanting to do them harm.

Over protective? Or justifiably cautious? At their age, my brother and I walked to school with all the other kids on our block. We walked everywhere, all over our neighborhood, all day. As children, our parents also walked to school. Apparently it was miles from home, and up hill, both ways. So when did walking to school become a bad thing? When bad people saw it as an opportunity to take advantage of children. Evil abounds. No matter your age, I think we all would say the world that our kids and grand-kids are growing up in today is not the same world we grew up in. Some things are better for sure, but some things are far worse.

Our living family age span, as I write this, is 90 years. My mom, who lives with us now, celebrates her 92nd birthday soon, while our youngest grandchild is 2 years old. While a lot has changed during those 90 years, many things have

For if you remain silent at this time relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish.

AND WHO KNOWS BUT THAT YOU HAVE COME TO YOUR ROYAL POSITION FOR SUCH A TIME AS THIS.

remained consistent. Like, our enemy the devil, has not slowed down causing division, suffering and strife. But, praise the Lord, God is still God. There have been times in my life I would drift away day dreaming about living in the world my mom grew up in, slower paced days on a quiet country farm, no car, no tv, no social media; but then I remember how much I love indoor plumbing and Chick-Fil-A. Truth is, THAT was her time; RIGHT NOW is my time. And for a long time, our times have overlapped. It was no accident when and where she was born, just as it was no accident when and where I was born or when and where you were born.

the understanding by suggestions or impressions on the mind, which leave no room to doubt the reality of their supernatural origin. I love the word infusion used here.... • • • • •

This is how the scriptures were written from the pens of many men, but the heart of The One God. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:” 2 Timothy 3:16 KJV

Know this friend, just as sure as Esther was born for her time and purpose, so were each and everyone of us. THIS is our time. And these people in our lives, they are OUR people, to love, nurture, and inspire.

What a wonderful blessing it is for God to have created me a woman and placed me in the family He chose for me. To have been raised, prayed over and influenced by the inspiring women God surrounded me with. To have been born to live on the patch of this Earth where God planted my feet. To have been assigned to this specific time in history. To have been entrusted with each beautiful soul in my family. Who knows, but that I have come to this position for such a time as this.

The Greek word used here is theopneustos, which means breathed out by God. This verse is the only time this word occurs in the Bible. Nothing else is divinely inspired like the Scriptures, they are as if God spoke them out directly to us. “But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.” Job 32:8 KJV Here, Job uses the Hebrew word neshamah which means the breath of God. Interestingly, the same Hebrew word appears 23 times in Scripture and always refers to the life giving breath of God.

Who knows, but that you have come to your position for such a time as this.

“And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” Genesis 2:7 KJV

So we’re here. We have these people. How do we become the inspiring women God desires us to be? Let’s start by looking at what God’s Word has to say about “inspire”. Inspiration ... We may not always be able to say when it will come, but I think we all know what inspiration does—it moves us to action. It is a catalyst. It lights a fire. It’s an “ah-ha” moment. It’s the light bulb over our head.

To penetrate To instill To inspire To steep or soak in To pour in

Let’s put these two together: 1.

In Genesis, we see that God’s breath brings life.

2.

In Job, we learn that the spirit within us (the Holy Spirit) in combination with the inspiration of God (the life giving breath) gives us understanding and discernment.

Inspiration motivates. It spurs us to do.

Look at how “divine inspiration” is defined: The infusion of ideas into the mind by the Holy Spirit; the conveying into the minds of men, ideas, notices or motions by extraordinary or supernatural influence; or the communication of the divine will to

So, what does this mean for us?

The breath of God which brought Adam to life is the same divine inspiration within us which bring the scriptures to life. S UMMER 2021 | S WEET T O T HE S OUL FAITH

27

This type of inspiration is available to us today also. Not in the sense of the authors of the Bible, it is written, it is whole, it is complete. No the Holy Spirit will not inspire us to add to the writings of the Holy Bible. But as believers and children of God, the Holy Spirit does pour in to us and inspire us to understanding and action. “And the disciples were continually filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.” Acts 13:52 We are told in Galatians 5 of the fruit of the Spirit, the outward expression of the inward dwelling of the Holy Spirit. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control are all the physical result of the Holy Spirt infusion into our lives. If we stay in step with the Spirit, this infusion into our lives will inspire us into action! “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; ... If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.” Galatians 2:22-23a, 25

When we do this, and live in accordance with God’s teachings, it allows us to be women who inspire and influence generations for the kingdom. Our lives will begin to reflect what God has taught us from His Word and others will be able to see Him through us.

In truth, women carry great influence, especially over the next generation. Even while children are still in diapers or toddling around the house, women are raising little people who will one day become adults who will be influencers of the next generation. And know this, you do not have to be the parent to have influence in the life of someone. Some of my greatest influencers were not even family. So we each need to ask ourselves, “how will I influence those watching me?” It is a personal decision each of us have to make. For sure, it requires us to be intentional in our efforts. Are you ready to become the inspiring woman God has destined you to be? Are you ready to accept His call to become the Kingdom influencer you were created to be? This. Is. Our. Time.

W HO IN YOUR LIFE DO YOU WANT TO INFLUENCE FOR THE K INGDOM OF G OD ? Write their names below. Then take a moment to ask God to orchestrate divine opportunities for you to pour into their lives.

I would be interested in talking to Eunice. She is only mentioned once in the Bible, in 2 Timothy 1:5. Yet in that one verse, Paul credits Timothy's faith to his mother, Eunice, and grandmother, Lois. Scholars believe that Timothy's father, a Greek, was not a believer. I'd love to ask Eunice about how being married to an unbeliever impacted her faith. I'd also love to hear how she and Lois discipled Timothy. Becoming an INSPIRING WOMAN

BETSY DE CRUZ

I never forget the phone call that turned our world upside down. I was driving a friend to our Bible study meeting when she got the call; three Christian brothers had just lost their lives after brutal torture. We rushed to our meeting and gathered with other believers around the television to see national coverage of three body bags being carried out of an apartment building.

“B UT

HIS DELIGHT

IS IN THE LAW OF THE

L ORD ,

AND ON HIS LAW HE MEDITATES DAY AND NIGHT .”

Psalm 1:2, ESV

32

My husband and I were serving in the Middle East, and once again we saw Satan attack the church. The next days passed in a blur of grief and fear. Could this happen to us? We tried to keep our elementary-aged kids away from the television because the last thing we wanted was for them to be as afraid as we were inside. I held on for dear life to one little verse of Scripture: “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” Psalm 91:1, ESV. I read it in my Bible, I repeated it to myself constantly, and I shared it with other believers who felt grief and fear alongside me.

S WEET T O T HE S OUL FAITH | S UMMER 2021

I didn’t know it, but I was meditating on that verse, and somehow it brought a deep sense of calm to my soul despite the overwhelming situation. It gave me encouragement I could share with those around me. You might know what it’s like to get a phone call that upends your world. The call from the doctor’s office. From your child’s school. From the police station. From the man who promised to love you faithfully until death. Maybe you’ve struggled like me to hold yourself together for loved ones who look to you for encouragement.

God’s Word strengthens us and inspires hope in any situation.

Over years of daily reading, meditating, and obeying, she grows into a flourishing, resilient tree, able to withstand storms and offer shade to those around her. As our children and others watch to see how we react to the trials of life, day by day we have an opportunity to build a legacy of faith. Let them see how God’s Word sustains us, fuels our prayers, and gives us good encouragement to share with them each day.

Questions for Reflection: What is one step I can take this week to deposit Scripture into my spiritual bank account?

Psalm 1 compares the person who delights in and meditates on Scripture to an ever-flourishing tree: “He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.” Psalm 1:3, ESV When we read and study the Bible, we make valuable deposits into our spiritual bank account. Then later during hard times, we have a store of Scriptural truth we can draw upon. Truth to strengthen ourselves and give hope to others.

What Bible verse gives me hope lately? Who could I share it with?

The woman who wants to inspire others strengthens herself first by regular intake of God’s Word. She knows any or all of the following will yield fruit in her life: Reading Listening Memorizing Studying Meditating Bible Journaling Each chapter, each verse she reads and reflects on becomes a deposit she can draw on later to find hope herself and offer encouragement to others.

Lord, thank you for the gift of your Word. Help me to treasure it and meditate on it each day. Father, use me to share your Word with the people around me. When life is hard, strengthen me and renew my hope in your promises. Build in me a legacy of faith I can pass on to my loved ones. In Jesus’ name, amen.

KRISTINE BROWN

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 (NIV) Imagine yourself going through your morning routine. Maybe you’re cooking breakfast or downing a cup of coffee before heading to the office. Maybe you’re getting kids started on their homeschool work or tending to chores around the house.

Mordecai motivated Esther to draw her courage from the Lord. He replied, “And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14 NIV). Esther stepped courageously into her calling. Will we do the same?

Whatever it is, I want you to picture yourself doing that thing. Now, picture yourself doing that thing with a crown on your head and a royal robe around your shoulders. Puts a smile on your face, doesn’t it?

We may not be tackling our morning routine all dressed in royal fashions. (Especially those days when the dog gets sick, or the kids forget a school project due!) But in the most difficult times, we can draw inspiration from Esther’s choice to risk going before the king anyway.

When we think of the story of Esther in the Bible— an ordinary girl who became queen— we picture her in all the splendor. Someone courageous, bold, and definitely worthy of her royal position. But I want us to set aside that perfect image of Esther for a bit and replace it with our self-portrait. Because what we do every day paints a more accurate likeness to how this young Jewish girl became queen. Esther’s life was more hard lessons than luxury. An orphan and exile, she was taken from her home to live in seclusion in the palace. From the most beautiful women in the land, the king would eventually choose Esther to become queen.

Because like Esther, our “for such a time as this” happens most often in the midst of struggle, not once we’ve made it through. We may not feel courageous, or like the right person for the job, but one thing we know is this. We are important to the King. So when we wonder if we’re worthy to come before Him, He has already set us in place as His children. That’s our royal position— crown and all! R EFLECTION : What is one thing you feel God calling you to do, and you need the courage to take that step of faith?

Yet something sinister also transpired behind the scenes. The king promoted a man named Haman to power. Haman hated Esther’s adoptive dad Mordecai. So Haman tricked the king into writing an edict for the massacre of the Jews. Mordecai slipped word to Esther, directing her to go to the king and beg for mercy for their people. So what did this courageous girl do in the face of danger? Esther hesitated. She spoke, “All the king’s officials and the people of the royal provinces know that for any man or woman who approaches the king in the inner court without being summoned the king has but one law: that they be put to death unless the king extends the gold scepter… But thirty days have passed since I was called to go to the king” (Esther 4:11 NIV). Esther stated her case. She made excuses. Ever feel like you need to explain yourself when you’re saying NO? We will all face times of doubt. Times when we wonder, “Why me, Lord?” Yet our faithful God will give us supernatural courage when we don’t feel like the right person for the job.

How can the key verse from Joshua 1:9 inspire you through the struggles you are facing?

P RAYER : Lord, Thank you for calling me to a royal position as your child. Most days I don’t feel like I should be wearing a crown or robe. I doubt my abilities to do what you’ve asked me to do. Yet I know from your Word that I am chosen by you. (1 Peter 2:9) What an awesome promise! Forgive me, Lord. Guide me and give me courage “for such a time as this.” In Jesus’ name, Amen.

STEPHANIE K. ADAMS

““And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.”” Luke 8:48 (ESV)

You may know her as the woman with an issue of blood. I call her the faith-full woman because she was more focused on her faith than on her problems. For 12 years, she hemorrhaged not just in her body but also her bank account, emotions, relationships, and sense of worth. We don’t know her name, but she could be anyone—the stranger at the store, the woman sitting beside you, or maybe she could be you. I was that woman several years ago when given a cancer diagnosis. I was desperate for someone, anyone, to look me in the eyes and tell me I was going to be okay. In all the years of desperate searching for a cure, this woman clung to hope that someone would be able to fix her; deep within she had faith, and she refused to give up.

Maybe you find yourself in a desperate situation, and you feel like you need someone to tell you it’s going to be okay. Perhaps you wonder how this woman was able to endure years of issues weighing her down when you can barely make it through one day. Friend, let me encourage you, don’t give up. Don’t let your frustrations discourage you from pressing in closer to Him. Do not let your circumstances dictate your faith. Keep believing in God’s goodness. When you come out on the other side, tell your story. Let God’s faithfulness in your life become the hope another woman needs to hear. Let your story be one of a faith-full woman.

R EFLECTION : What does it mean to you to be a faith-full woman?

In reading the story of this faithful woman, Christ proclaims, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.” What was it about her that gave her such faith? Here are 3 attributes of a faith-full woman: She never gives up - Our faith-filled sister spent years seeking a resolution to her issues. Even after spending every cent she had, exhausting herself emotionally and mentally, and asking everyone for help, she didn’t allow frustration or discouragement to keep her from believing in God’s ability to do good in her situation. She never allowed circumstances to dictate her faith.

If you are currently in a hard situation, how can you put your faith into action?

How has God been faithful in your past? Who can you share your story with to give them hope and strengthen their faith?

She puts action to her faith - Once the woman heard Jesus was in town, she mustered every ounce of courage within and set her sights on an encounter with the real source of healing. She didn’t let tradition or what others might think keep her from reaching Jesus. She kept her eyes on Hope and pressed through fear of the what-ifs as she reached for His hem. Complete healing was the reward for her faith, and she found peace in Christ. She shares her story - Our faith-full friend knew the power of story. As she listened to others retell God's miraculous works, it strengthened her faith, and she knew healing was possible for her. Therefore, after experiencing her healing, she told why she pursued Him and how He changed her. “I love you, Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” Psalm 18:1-2 (NIV) There’s no question that over the past few weeks I’ve been hanging by a thread. I don't particularly like saying these words, much less living them, but it's the season I'm in. When I’m feeling deflated and defeated, I know the prince of darkness is nipping at my heels, wreaking havoc and causing doubt. Satan thrives when our fear and weakness cause us to rely on our flesh rather than Jesus. Thankfully, we serve a God who is bigger than any defeat and who commands us to be strong and courageous. Reading God's Word, praying consistently, and linking arms with like-minded Christians show us that we can be stronger together. Trusting Jesus allows us to rest in His strength and power because He does the heavy lifting. Deborah, one of the most remarkable women in the Bible, depended on God rather than basking in her own strength and pride. She was a great role model for all who are called to lead in a time of adversity. Her willingness to follow God's call was admirable, and through every challenge or difficulty, she consistently gave God the credit. Like Deborah, calling on God for strength needs to be a part of our every day prayer time. One, because of the roles we find ourselves in and two, for the courage and boldness we need to navigate the challenges we face in this life.

STAND STRONG AND BE COURAGEOUS. When faced with challenges and struggles, God called Deborah to do a job and He equipped her with the tools she needed to succeed. He saw wisdom, strength, and discernment in her. The perfect package for the work that needed doing. Judges 4:9 NIV BE APPROACHABLE. Let people know you care about them. The people of Israel trusted Deborah and came to her, seeking guidance, fairness, and counsel. Her meetings were not held in a stuffy office or courtroom. Instead, she chose to hold court under the Palm of Deborah, in the hill country of Ephraim. Judges 4:5 NIV EXERCISE WISDOM. Deborah was filled with wisdom and God equipped her mightily to handle the role of judge over the Israelites. She was an outstanding decision maker and mediator. She used her gifts in service to God and in turn, He used her to rescue His people. God knows everything about you and me. He knows when we’re hanging by a thread and ready to give up. He knows every ounce of weakness displayed and every tumble we take. He knows our strengths and our skill sets. He draws on those strengths and equips us with more tools to do His work. Just like Deborah, we are to answer God’s call with obedience, strength, courage, and an unwavering faith to get the job done. Even when hanging by a thread.

Deborah was a unique woman, the only female judge in Israel, whose God-given qualities and characteristics prepared her to help lead the Israelites against the Canaanites in their time of oppression. She had a strong devotion to Christ and she wanted to serve Him to the best of her ability. She was wise, a strong mediator, cared about people, and gave the credit to God.

R EFLECTION : What can I learn from Deborah’s leadership?

As women of faith we too, are asked to lead and stand strong in a variety of situations. Deborah’s leadership and strength provides us with many qualities that we can learn from.

Name a time when you were hanging by a thread and God strengthened you to complete the tasks at hand

Five qualities gleaned from Deborah’s leadership and strength: BE OBEDIENT. Deborah was obedient to God’s call to lead the Israelites. She delivered God’s message to Barak and supported and encouraged him when he asked her to go in battle with him. She didn’t think twice, she agreed to go. Judges 4:6 NIV NEVER WAIVER IN YOUR FAITH. Cling to God’s promises and truths. Deborah could have told Barak to go ahead on his own and been done. But, when he asked her to go to, she did. Her character and her faith in God allowed her to do what was needed. Judges 4:6-8 NIV

P RAYER : Dear Lord, Thank you for supplying me with strength when I feel depleted and weak. Your Word gives me truth to lean on and encouragement to persevere in the midst of challenges. You know everything about me and when I fall short Your timing is perfect. Jesus, help me to be obedient and to have wisdom, courage, and unwavering faith as I navigate the circumstances of daily living. In Your Name I pray. Amen.

“But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:40-42 (ESV) It's funny how we can see others flaws but struggle to see our own. We have the hardest time seeing what’s right in front of us. How? How do we jump right over the priority to put all our energy into the thing that matters less? Human nature, that’s how. We respond to what’s in front of us. This instinct has been around since the beginning of time. In the garden, Eve responds to the natural circumstances as she took a bite of that fruit. Adam responded to the natural event as he blamed his wife for his sin. By nature, we tend to assess the natural before the spiritual (if we assess the spiritual at all). This makes it harder to discern some moments in time that weigh heavier on the spiritual importance. Judgement calls are usually way off, and we head in the wrong direction blindly. No worries! We have hope and we have help. There is an element that is crucial to our growth and responsiveness as believers that has no root in the natural. Discernment. Discernment: 1. The ability to judge well. 2. (in Christian context) Perception in the absence of judgement with a view to obtaining spiritual guidance and understanding. In the text, we see that there is a clear choice that is the better choice. Jesus being that clear choice. However, one sister in the text struggled to discern the nature of the appointed time. She struggled to assess the urgency for engagement with the priority before her. She had her own set of priorities that seemed to be right at the time. Not that she was completely off base. She was just a step to the side of the necessary focus in the moment. But let’s face it. We are just like Martha in all of our well-meaning. We fluff the pillows and put away the dishes to prepare for the experience and then somehow miss the essence of the moments we were preparing for in the first place.

Within each of us victorious women of the Kingdom, is a Spirit that leads and guides with gentleness toward the will and timing of our sovereign God. Helping us discern atmospheres and circumstance. You are that woman who knows when it’s time to sit at the feet of Jesus or fluff the pillows. The woman who can discern the temperature of the atmosphere and the voice of God. She who knows when it’s time to sit and take in, stand and work, or lay in the presence of God. You can choose the good portion too. It just takes practice. One circumstance at a time. Making that decision to hear the Spirit within you instead of the desire in you. Learning to rightly judge each moment and weigh it with an eternal scale. The Mary in you is ready to take a seat at the feet of Jesus and feed from the good portion. R EFLECTION : In what areas do you feel you need to be more open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit that leads to discernment?

How will you take steps toward intentional engagement with the purposes and timing of God?

Don’t worry though my dear sister…there is a Mary in all of us also! And she chooses the good portion! (“Mary has chosen the good portion,” Luke 10:42 ESV) Discernment is an incredibly important characteristic of the effective godly woman. It’s discernment that told sweet Mary that she should sit rather than stand and get busy. It led her to see the clear choice in a circumstance that called for much action and awareness. It gave her an unction about how her eyes, ears, and heart should be positioned at that moment. It makes choices easier and confusion less likely. Directing us toward the God things rather than the simply good things.

P RAYER : God, we need You to help us judge rightly. Give us, Your daughters, wisdom, discernment, and confidence through Your Spirit. We surrender our good things for Your will so that You will be glorified in our responses and actions. In Jesus name, Amen.

AMY ELAINE MARTINEZ

“And she said, “According to your words so be it.” Then she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window.” Joshua 2:21 (ESV) Rahab proved to be a woman of her word and we can too. Honesty and integrity are vital to our everyday lives if we want to point people to Jesus. As sisters, aunties, moms and grandmas we know our words have power. How we use our words is the tricky part. While Rahab didn’t set the perfect example for us by lying about the spies’ whereabouts, in the end, she kept her word and protected God’s people. If we take a moment to shift through her sin, we will find some golden nuggets of truth to apply to our lives. Rahab’s life was a beautiful display of Show & Tell; she was not only a woman of her word but also of daring deeds. Truth #1- We hold the power of life and death in our tongue. (Proverbs 18:21) Learning to leave a legacy every time we open our mouths changes the atmosphere today and impacts our tomorrows. What a privilege to speak life and hope to those around us. Though it’s not easy, when we speak the truth in love, we create a safe place for others. In times of trouble, they’ll turn to us in their time of need. Positivity paves the path for prodigals to come home. And listen, we’ve all been a prodigal, wandering away from God and losing our way. Our words will one day woo them back to the love of their Heavenly Father. When Jericho’s walls came tumbling down, Rahab’s entire family was saved because she chose to share her newfound belief in God. Regardless of whether or not they would believe her, she took the risk to save their lives. The harlot turned helper used her words to create a safe haven on this side of heaven.

sets the tone for future conversations. Once they see God’s love in action, then we can speak into other’s lives. Rahab’s rope was a tangible reminder for all to see what God had done and would do in the future. While they waited for their promised freedom, seeing the red cord she so boldly displayed was like hope on a rope when they desperately needed a place to hide, knowing God was on their side. R EFLECTION : How can you shine bright for others to find hope and a safe haven in times of trouble? Think and pray about your relationships with friends and family. Which ones need you to show more and tell less or vice versa?

Ask God for discernment and creativity to help you navigate the truths we learned today in the story of Rahab. Then, make a list of things you can do differently to create a safe haven and help those God’s put in your path.

Truth #2- We are meant to shine bright for the Kingdom. (Matthew 5:14-16) Sharing our story is necessary, shining our light is non-negotiable. As believing women, we are to radiate God’s love in all we say and do. We can’t just talk the talk and expect for others to buy into our beliefs. “Preach the Gospel always, and if necessary, use words.” ~ Unknown Actions speak louder. Sometimes people need something tangible to grab hold of when taking their first baby steps of faith. It may be our reactions rather than retaliation, worshiping instead of worrying, or our courage over comparison that catches the eye of those around us. Often, it’s seeing how a Jesus girl behaves more than preachy platitudes that makes all the difference. Seeing our shine

P RAYER : Father God, thank You for Your faithfulness. In every situation, Your Word is true. You make me shine brighter. Thank You for the transforming power of the Holy Spirit that strengthens me to both show and tell of Your goodness. Help me to leave a legacy of love and always spur hope in others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

ELAINE LANKFORD

“And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.” Luke 1:45 (ESV) Sometimes in life, God makes requests of us that, well, just seem impossible. How many times has He sweetly whispered an instruction to you that made you recoil in anxiety? How many times has He made a specific request that immediately caused you to go through a pros and cons list in your mind? Here’s what I’ve learned over the years. Obedience to God can take us through all kinds of emotions, but at the end of the day our deepest level of devotion to God is manifested in our degree of obedience to Him. Of all the people in the Bible, Jesus is the person we most often point to as being completely obedient to the Father. But today, I want to talk about his mother, Mary. Too often we skim through the story of how Jesus came to Earth, but never give a second thought to this young Jewish girl’s plight in accepting this incredible assignment from God. Most likely, at the tender age of twelve, in a prepubescent state, Mary is not asked, but informed by God’s messenger that she will give birth to the long-awaited Messiah. The words falling on her ears must have been overwhelming to say the least, but keeping her wits about her, she doesn’t ask God to prove what is being said. She simply asks how it will happen. I mean it’s a logical question. She’s a virgin.

Mary accepted a seemingly impossible task. She allowed no one and nothing to sway her. And to this day, no one has ever birthed a more perfect baby! We can all learn a little something about obedience from Mary. First and foremost, a solid devotion to the Lord creates a spirit of confidence within us. Second, her story reminds us that if God gives us a vision, He plans to see it through to completion. Daughter of God don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and into the vision God has for your life. Step out in obedience and watch what the Lord will do! R EFLECTION : What steps are you taking today to improve your level of devotion to God?

Do you feel confident enough to respond positively to any request the Lord makes of you? If not, what areas of your spiritual life need a little prioritization?

And once the angel explains, Mary without hesitation says yes to the Lord’s vision for her life. How could Mary be so calm about this? Everyone knows where babies come from and that they don’t come from virgins. Her reputation is about to be ruined. Her engagement to Joseph is now in danger and perhaps even her life. Here’s what I think. I think the messages we have heard over the years that painted Mary as a naïve youth were a little misleading. Mary’s reaction alone tells me she was wise beyond her years. As a Jewish girl, Mary would have been educated at home on the finer points of God’s Word. A lack of formal education would not have kept her from learning of God’s promises to her people. No, she wasn’t a starry-eyed child, but a strong young woman whose identity was firmly placed in her God and in that moment obedience came naturally.

P RAYER : Lord, may we become confident, strong, devoted daughters. Father God let us like Mary find our identity in You and You alone. We pray for the boldness to say yes when You call. May we understand that all that You would ask of us we can accomplish in Your strength. May we correctly discern when we need to move out of Your way and allow You to fully execute Your vision in our lives. And may we be a shining example to others of what can be achieved if only they would believe! Amen.

KAREN FRIDAY

“Who despises a vile person but honors those who fear the LORD; who keeps an oath even when it hurts, and does not change their mind.” Psalm 15:4 (NIV) “You have my word.” A family member promised to treat me with kindness at a gathering. Since she broke her word and mistreated me at the previous family event, I hesitated to believe her. Once again, she failed to keep her word and it hurt. Still, there’s no freedom for me to point fingers. In the same way, I have failed to keep my word to family and friends on more than one occasion, and I hurt them.

Like we see in Hannah and in our focus verse, the Bible encourages us to keep oaths. When I keep my word, I become a woman true to my words and God’s Word. R EFLECTION : How can I follow Hannah’s example to keep my word even when it’s hard?

We often fail to follow through. Or, we bail. We even become repeat offenders. We all sometimes renege on our word to others and even to the Lord—gulp. But whether or not we keep our word defines our character and showcases our integrity or its lack. While humans struggle in this department, not the Lord. God keeps his word and never contradicts his character.

Do I understand that to become a godly woman of influence means I follow the Lord and strive to follow through in my promises to him and others?

Friend, you can always count on this: “You have my word.” – God God not only keeps his word and acts on our behalf, but he also reminds us we have his Holy Word; examples of biblical stories and scriptures for our own promise-keeping efforts. In Samuel 1, we meet Hannah, a woman mistreated by her husband’s other wife because Hannah was childless. Instead of a baby, Hannah carried a sad heart. Deeply distressed, Hannah wept bitterly to the Lord in the temple. She asked God to give her a son. And she vowed to give him back to the Lord, for service in the temple. For how long? All the days of his life. Can you imagine praying and keeping this vow? Our good and great God blessed Hannah with a son she named, Samuel. And Hannah kept her word, taking the child to the temple after she weaned him. “’I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord.’ And he worshiped the Lord there.” 1 Samuel 1:27-28 (NIV)

Let’s pray this becomes true about us: “You have my word.” – Karen (insert your name)

P RAYER : Lord, forgive me for failing to keep my word to you and help me ask others for their forgiveness. I desire to become a woman who is known for keeping her word. Continue to mold me into your image, the ultimate Promisekeeper. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

"She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue." Proverbs 31:26 (ESV)

When Nabal's servant heard about David's men and Nabal's interaction, he knew who would be the only one who could reverse the damage — Abigail, Nabal's wife. She had beauty and brains. Scripture (1 Samuel 25) reveals interesting facts about this couple. Nabal was crude, mean, and ill-tempered. Nabal's name means foolish. Each time someone called his name, he, and all within earshot, are reminded of his most prominent character trait. His decision to reprimand and dismiss David's men (who had been protecting his flock) when they requested food helps us understand how foolish he was. In contrast, Abigail was sensible, wise, and beautiful. Abigail must have had the trust of her household. Otherwise, the servant would have never risked approaching her about her husband's rude and risky behavior. We can imagine that Nabal's entire household had learned to maneuver around his surly disposition. Abigail's influence over them made her Nabal's most important asset. A fact he no doubt took for granted.

from her faith. Remembering God's faithfulness builds our trust that He will do it again. Graciousness. Tense situations can change our disposition from sunny to cloudy. Abigail's use of gracious words soothed the situation, and her generosity calmed the anger propelling David toward murderous retribution. Abigail used her position to benefit others. We can make the same choice. We each have a circle of influence that needs our wisdom, faith, and graciousness. The Holy Spirit equips us with the skills we need to be godly influential women.

R EFLECTION : When you hear the phrase "circle of influence," what does that mean to you?

Abigail was as discerning as she was beautiful. She would need all her negotiation skills to save her family. Interceeding on Nabal's behalf was a part of her skillset. Could it be that the very skills Abigail developed to live with Nabal were the skills she would need in a negotiation with David? David planned to kill everyone in the household by morning. Abigail planned to save them.

Who is in your circle of influence, and how can you use your strengths to benefit them?

All of us, at one time or another, feel like we are in an impossible situation. As Abigail made plans to meet David, she must have felt overwhelmed. She did not let her feelings direct her actions. She knew what she needed to do and did it. Abigail has several character traits that we can develop to use our influence to benefit others. Wisdom. Abigail's quick response to Nabal's rudeness and her ability to make a viable plan demonstrates she sought wisdom long before she needed it. James 1:5 (NLT) tells us, "If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking." Faith. Abigail tackled the situation with faith in God. She knew that God had chosen David as King and spoke of God's care for him. Her courage in approaching David when she learned of his anger came

P RAYER : We want to be women of influence. Open our eyes to those You place in our path that will benefit from our skills and strengths. When we feel inadequate or overwhelmed, infuse us with more of Your Holy Spirit power. We desire to grow more and more into the godly women You call us to be. Take our hand and lead us, Lord, as we lead others. We ask these things in the empowering name of Jesus. Amen.

J E BERRY

“So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” John 4:28-29 (ESV) We love to hear other people’s stories and antidotes. We place value on the words of others and file them away in our memory rolodex. The testimony of many have planted seeds in each of us and called forth great fruit from lessons learned. But what about our own testimonies? Have we placed a high valuation on the redemptive qualities of our life stories? What about the rescue moment that brought salvation? How much is it worth? The Samaritan woman who met Jesus at the well had no idea the turn her story would take as she went for water that day. She did, however, realize that a shift was happening as she spoke to Jesus that day. She took full responsibility for her past, while still having hope for something new and life giving. Jesus Christ. She listened as He divulged her sin and unveiled her transgressions. She listened as He confirmed her thoughts regarding the coming Messiah. And she accepted His offer of freedom through living water that would never leave her thirsty. But she did not stop there. She knew that what she now knew was of great value and believed it to be worth sharing. She was now a witness with a testimony. “So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” John 4:28-29 ESV

know. If we genuinely believe that the blood of Jesus saves and that He forgives us of all sin, then we should be excited to share that news. And if we believe that everything changed when we encountered Jesus, then we should all be saying, “Come, see the man!” The Samaritan women displays a beautiful example of what it looks like practically to “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel” (Mark 16:15). She was going along her merry way, encountered Jesus, and immediately began to proclaim. What a witness. What a woman! Be a woman of witness today. Testify of God’s goodness and power in your life as you are going. Set the stage for the Spirit of God to bring forth healing and salvation for another precious soul.

R EFLECTION : How have you let fear stop you from being a woman of witness?

How has your encounter with Jesus changed your life?

This Samaritan woman did not run and hide in shame or hide her part in the story. Her part of the story was a platform to the prize. Jesus. Our stories are a stage for the glory of God. The testimony we carry with us is a key to the prison cell for someone. When we share our stories, we make room for the Holy Spirit to work through us. Our vulnerability with others plant seeds of grace and reveals God’s incredible mercy toward us. Taking part in the redemptive power of the Gospel of Christ applies a responsibility for each of us to be a witness to others of its reality and impact. Witness: 1A person who sees an event 2Evidence or proof We conquer through the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony. We are both the seer of the event (encountering Jesus) and the evidence of that encounter. We must not only believe in God, but we must also believe Him. If we believe that we are the light of the world, then what are we doing hiding our light under a bushel? If we have assurance that our salvation is of great benefit and eternal inheritance, then it should be on the tip of our tongues to share with someone who does not

What would you want someone else to know about how Jesus has changed you?

P RAYER : God, you have been so faithful in every area of life. You saw fit to appoint a time for every encounter. Help me to share my testimony from a place of belief and experience with the power of Christ. Open my mouth for Your glory and use my life story as a platform for your might. You have full access to me and use of my testimony. In Jesus name, Amen!

Your Home JANA KENNEDY-SPICER

HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE YOUR HOME?

everyday.

The dictionary app on my phone lists over two dozen definitions for the word “home”.

What place is more central to our lives than home?

I like this one, “the place in which one’s domestic affections are centered.” Or how about, “a principal base of operations or activities.” Although some days it does feel like “one of three attack positions..”. Whether it is large or small; owned, rented or borrowed; temporary or sort of permanent; new, old, or somewhere in-between; we all have some place we call home.

54

So I want to invite you to do something you may have never done, or if you have, then I want to encourage you to do it again - pray over your home.

There is really no specific way you have to do this, but I am going to share with you how I like to pray over my home.

LET’S TAKE A PRAYER WALK

Home is our very personal private space. It’s our family space. It’s where real life happens with real life people feeling real feelings and fighting real battles.

A prayer walk is pretty simple, it is exactly what it says, you pray as you walk. I like to pray and walk around my neighborhood. It’s a great stress reliever and helps me recenter.

If your home is like our home, we celebrate here, we play here, we cry here, we argue here, we contend here, we eat here, we entertain here, we learn here, we work here, we live life here

But in this particular case, we are going to pray as we walk around our home.

S WEET T O T HE S OUL FAITH | S UMMER 2021

“Our home” is where you live right now. It may be a 3 bedroom, 3 bath in the burbs, it may be a one

11 Scriptures to Pray Over Your Home WHOLE HOUSE 1. Dedicate your whole house and residents to God. “And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua 24:15

FOUNDATION 2. Build your family’s spiritual foundation on God. “He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.” Luke 6:48

FRONT DOOR / ENTRY room apartment or space in the city. It may be a space on loan from a friend, or it may even be a place you don’t really want to be. But we are going to walk all of these home places and spaces together. We are each going to invite and welcome God into our homes. We are going to walk Him around our private spaces and talk to Him in those rooms. To begin, we are going outside. Walk all the way around your house praying, not just for the physical structure but for all of your family and residents. Then move inside, walking through each room praying for that room’s purpose and family member. Pray for any specific needs of that person and your personal relationship with them, remembering to always include thanksgiving.

This article is an excerpt from JANA KENNEDY-SPICER’s recently republished prayer journal Pray Relentlessly.

3. Protection from the outside world. “He has made strong the iron bands of your doors; he has sent blessings on your children inside your walls.” Psalm 147:13 (BBE)

FAMILY ROOM 4. The building of unity and healthy relationships.

“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Colossians 3:12-17 S UMMER 2021 | S WEET T O T HE S OUL FAITH

KITCHEN 5. Create a welcoming environment for others. “Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.” Romans 12:13

DINING AREA 6. Bless the food and share with others. “He took the seven loaves and the fish, and having given thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.” Matthew 15:36

BATHROOMS 7. Pray for good health and well being. “Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul.” 3 John 1:2

MASTER BEDROOM 8. Develop a harmonious marital relationship. “With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” Ephesians 4:2-3

CHILDREN’S BEDROOM 9. Teach your children to follow God. “Teach me your way, O LORD, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name.” Psalm 86:11

GUEST BEDROOM 10. A blessing for peace. “The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.” Numbers 6:24-26

MITZI NEELY

Approximately four years ago my husband and I started a new journey of building our second home --the farm home, the barndominium home, our forever home. We have prayed, planned, and saved for this new place, asking God to go before us and lead this journey. From the first 2x4 put into place months ago, to the progress of one wall, two walls, and now entire rooms, we continue to pray: “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” My sweet man has spent hours working on what will be our humble abode when all is said and done. He has measured and re-measured, figured and re-figured, and double-checked plans for accuracy and design along the way. Each step bathed in prayer and thoughtfulness. One of the things we have looked forward to is storing Scriptures within its walls. Just as we store God’s Word in our hearts, we wanted to do the same in our new home. We made a list of verses that would speak God’s Word over each space and be meaningful to our family. Each verse reiterated His love for us, His protection, His devotion, and ours to Him.

The day finally came for us to lovingly begin tucking away God’s Words on a 2x4 in each wall, in every room. I remembered thinking once the sheet rock went up no one would know the verses were there, but we would know.

11. Dedicate your work to God.

From the home's foundation to it’s support system, to the laboring hands of my husband, we have prayed for peace and protection over our home. We have also prayed for love, kindness, laughter, and memories to be shared throughout.

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.“ Colossians 3:23-24

Most of all, we have prayed for the Scriptures and prayers to be a testimony of our faith and trust in Jesus. Because HE is the cornerstone of our home.

Scriptures to Pray Over Children

JANA KENNEDY-SPICER

One of the most impactful things we can do as adults is pray for children. Whether a parent, grandparent, extended family, or a friend, we all have children in our lives. Praying for the children God has placed in our lives is not only an honor, but also a responsibility. Contending for our children, fighting spiritual battles on their behalf, are just two reasons we should be relentlessly praying for the next generation. Not sure where to begin? Here are seven scriptures we can pray over the children in our lives. Jot these down in your prayer journal. Highlight them in your Bible. Set alarm reminders on your phone to pray throughout the day. Customize each scripture to include the child’s name and any specific circumstances or spiritual battles they are facing. These scripture prayers may seem short and small, but God’s Word is mighty and powerful, and has the ability to transform lives.

1. DESIRE FOR GOD’S WORD

6. HAVE GODLY RELATIONSHIPS

“More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.” Psalm 19:10

“Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.” Proverbs 13:20

2. GROW IN GRACE & KNOWLEDGE

7. SEEK GODLY DIRECTION

“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.” 2 Peter 3:18

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6

3. WALK IN GOD’S POWER “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” 2 Timothy 1:7

4. DO NOT CONFORM TO SOCIETY “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2

5. LOVE OTHERS “And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:37-39

Wasted to CHRISTY RODRIGUEZ

Looking through the rearview mirror I watched the face of my 8 yearold in the back seat change in an instant. He had just climbed into the car after school with eyes lit up with excitement as he asked if one of his buddies could come over to our house that day. My day had been stressful and nonstop and I was already at the end of my wits. Shaking my head, I cut him off mid-sentence and sharply said, “No! We’re not doing that today!” I watched the wind leave his sail as his eyes looked down and that enthusiastic smile turned into a look of hurt, disappointment, and rejection. I know kids, like many of us, have an ability to put on an awesome “pity party look”, but I knew this was different and I knew it had to do with the tone in my voice. I shut him down quickly and sharply, not even giving him a chance to express himself. I also knew it was directly related to the previous stressful four hours I had just experienced at work. Hindsight is always 20/20 but if I think about it and really 62

you’ve just finished one task and are about to take on a new one…right before a phone call or after a call, or while driving from point A to point B, etc.” I thought, “Wow, what a question! So simple yet profound. What DO I do?” Honestly, I just move to the next task without blinking or if there is a small window of time, I use it to scroll Facebook or Instagram…not exactly things that fuel my soul. I realized how rarely I stop and take a quick moment to reflect on what just happened or what’s happening inside of me, much less invite God into that space.

Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 NIV

get honest with myself, I know the negative tension I created in the car might have looked differently if I had taken the time to pause in that moment or even somewhere in my day leading up to that moment. A chaplain I know asked an interesting question recently. “What do you do with the transitions in your day?” I thought, “Transitions? Huh? What are you talking about?” He expounded, “In other words… what do you do in between tasks…that space where

That conversation was so impactful that I started paying attention to my transitions and reconnecting with God throughout my day. Sometimes it would be as simple as me praying the serenity prayer. “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” Or maybe just saying a word of scripture under my breath. “Search my heart oh God and see if there is any offensive way within me and lead unto the way everlasting.” What I’ve noticed is that what once were unimportant time gaps have turned into priceless pockets of rest. I reflect on what I’m feeling, talk to God about it, pray, and reset. It usually takes five minutes and I end up walking into a meeting or getting on the phone with a whole new attitude than I had just a few minutes prior. Regular appointments have often turned into divine appointments and those wasted minutes are now sacred minutes. And I’ve learned that if I don’t do it, then I carry junk with me throughout the day and it comes out somewhere else like it did in the car with my son. So if you’re struggling today to find rest for your soul or needing that extra strength to get you through your day, my prayer is that you’ll remember to take your transitions and use them to pause for just long enough to open the door for God to come in. He will calm your anxious thoughts, strengthen you, and give you rest. He’s waiting to be that sacred place for you and if you let him, he will most certainly show up in the most unique and beautiful ways.

Kids Summer Reading MICHELLE COOPER

The joy of reading is a special gift passed down from one generation to the next, or even to a neighbor or friend. The gift of reading is available to ALLregardless of race, ethnicity, or socio-economic status. Nothing brings a family or community together more than the power of the written word. Imparting the gift of becoming a lifelong reader can never be measured in value. Opening a book can transport you to a magical world or help someone learn the skills to succeed in life. Ready to start your own journey or share a story with a special person? Tips: • Check out your local public library-many libraries have audiobooks, ebooks, and streaming services in addition to print books. Library cards are FREE at any public library.

• Find a quiet place to relax and read by yourself or with a loved one. Creating an inviting space, especially to share with a child, makes reading all the more magical for you both.

• When helping a child pick out a book for independent reading, ensure the child can read the first two or three pages without missing more than four or five words. The goal for independent reading is for the child to be successful and enjoy it. Starting a child with books that are too difficult, can be frustrating for the child.

• Pair an activity with a book. Many children’s books lend themselves to activities loved ones can do together. Most public libraries have special events for children and adults, especially during the summer. Drop by your community library and pick up a calendar of events.

• Variety is the key to success. Try many types and genres of books. You

Sweet Hour of Prayer Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer! that calls me from a world of care, and bids me at my Father's throne make all my wants and wishes known. In seasons of distress and grief, my soul has often found relief, and oft escaped the tempter's snare by thy return, sweet hour of prayer! Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer! the joys I feel, the bliss I share of those whose anxious spirits burn with strong desires for thy return! With such I hasten to the place where God my Savior shows his face, and gladly take my station there, and wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!

Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer! thy wings shall my petition bear to him whose truth and faithfulness engage the waiting soul to bless. And since he bids me seek his face, believe his word, and trust his grace, I'll cast on him my every care, and wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!

Your Ordinary Extraordinary Legacy LISA APPELO

This is not the childhood I wanted for you. Those words pierced my heart as I watched my youngest son walking up the beach toward me. He was carrying his dad’s surfboard, his right arm just able to reach under and hold the board to his side. A newly minted teenager, he was long and lanky against the bleached sand. I’d always imagined his dad here for moments like this, teaching him how to surf, how to throw a cast net, or how to catch a shark from the pier. But eight years before, my husband had passed away

suddenly. I’d gone to bed happily married and woken a widow and single mom to seven kids. My children and I lost so much with their dad’s death and we were all navigating deep grief. Yet amid the great loss there were also great gifts. One of those gifts was the legacy my husband left. Before he died, I hadn’t given much thought to legacy. It was an end-of-life issue, something to consider in our golden years. I mean, yes, we wanted to leave a legacy but in the busy days of raising kids, managing a home, juggling jobs and bills, legacy wasn’t on the top of our minds.

70

S WEET T O T HE S OUL FAITH | S UMMER 2021

Until Dan died. His death brought razor clarity to many issues and one of those was the kind of legacy we leave. In the months that followed, I came to see three things about our legacy. 1. EVERYONE LEAVES A LEGACY. We often associate a legacy with charitable gifts or philanthropic bequests left by those of prominence. It’s a name that lives on after the person has died because they donated money for a scholarship or new building for the school. Or we associate legacy with those who’ve had a storied career whether it’s in missions or the medicine. But legacy isn’t reserved for the rich and famous. We all leave a legacy.

It’s not a question of whether we’ll leave a legacy; the question is what kind of legacy we’ll leave. So that begs the questions: How is my legacy shaped and is this something I should be thinking about now? Yes, but also no. Because the way we create a legacy may surprise you. 2. LEGACY IS SHAPED IN ORDINARY MOMENTS. I always assumed a legacy was made by impressive events in life. That it came from epic family vacations and picture-perfect holidays together. Dan’s death showed me our legacy isn’t shaped in the extravagant highs of life but in the day-in and dayout ordinary moments.

amid the casseroles and sweet tea, squabbling and correction, stories and laughter that knit a family together night after night. Legacy is shaped in the drives to and from practice, in Saturday yard work together and on Sundays in the church pew. Legacy is forged in the daily ways you love, in steady loyalty through all seasons, in the ways you listen and uplift and show up for others. That means legacy, while not something that bubbles to the top of our daily to-do list, should be revealed in our priorities, our time and our choices. Those daily choices add up to a lifetime. And that leads to the last thing I’ve learned about legacy. 3. LEGACY IS THE FINAL GIFT YOU GIVE YOUR LOVED ONES. Proverbs 13:22 (NIV) says, “A good person leaves an inheritance to his children’s children.” But our inheritance isn’t limited to money or a greatgrandmother’s brooch. The love we show and the character shown as we trust God are gifts that will continue to bless our loved ones when God takes us home. Dan wasn’t perfect, but he loved well and he had deep faith; both have anchored us as we miss him. As my children have grown, I can see his character continues to shape their decisions as they’ve chosen careers, gotten married and started their own families. The legacy of a life well lived – no matter how short or how long – is a gift that will continue to inspire and fill your loved ones long after God takes you home. Annie Dillard said, “How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.” It is the spending of this ordinary day and the next that shapes the legacy we leave.

A legacy is chiseled in dinners around the table

JODIE BARRETT

Often, I eagerly open the mailbox hoping to see a colorful envelope. One that stands out among the dreaded white ones that contain bills and solicitations for things I do not need or desire. When a pop of pink, yellow, and bright blue greets me, I am excited to read the return address, and of course, the contents. Someone somewhere is thinking of me. At times, they live far away and our only means of communicating are texts, calls, and yes, old fashioned letters. Recently, a friend sat to teach his daughter how to address an envelope for the mail. As I was told the story, fond memories of riding my bicycle to the post office came to mind. I would pen notes to friends I met at camp or cousins I only visited in the summer, ride several blocks to the small post office in our town, purchase stamps, and mail my special correspondences. As an adult, I do the same (except I drive my jeep), and it warms my heart to hear of a new generation learning this method of sharing news and good cheer. I am happy to say that one day I received a special note from this young daughter, and it brought me a smile and gave me joy to sit and correspond back to her. Letter writing may seem old-fashioned and outdated, but without it we would not have most of the New Testament. As I sit to write letters to friends, family, and even strangers, I turn to Paul’s words in the New Testament to read how he opened and closed his correspondences to those he shared His faith, struggles, wisdom, love, and encouragement with. Paul’s example has taught me to warmly greet others with a prayer for God’s grace and peace. In between these special words, I have learned to share what God is doing, how He is leading me, and yes, what struggles I may be facing, but also what blessings have been received since we last talked. My desire is to be a witness for the Lord and encourage others with His love.

I’m almost 50, sticking stamps and colorful sentiments on envelopes. Joyfully, I drop them in the metal mailbox, raise the red flag, later to return to see if anyone has done the same for me. The young lady I spoke of earlier often surprises me. She addresses me as Mrs. Jodie. Often, she writes, “I wanted to make you smile”. And she does, even when she admits that she does have much news to share. In receipt of those letters, I smile brighter because I know she is learning the art of caring. With my return letters, I pray I can give an example of how to share God’s love with others. One she can follow for many years to come and later, share with another generation. My Great Aunt was an avid letter writer, as well as my Father when He was away from home serving in the Army. Often, I find myself reading about their lives through their scribblings saved by other family members. Tales of time are tucked inside envelopes that have traveled miles via the postal system. It is endearing to see the love shared between generations in notes written long ago, and I also must admit, mind altering to think how a letter can be delivered from here to there. There are many skills and traditions we can share with our children and grandchildren. Why not letter writing? We may never know the smiles we create with colorful envelopes we lovingly seal and stamp. I know the love that sealed letters written to me has stuck!

LOOKING AT HER IS LIKE LOOKING INTO THE MIRROR MOST DAYS. This woman-child of mine has grown up right before my eyes and sometimes without my permission. After two miscarriages and three years of treatment, my body was healthy enough to carry a baby full-term. Those three years of waiting were difficult, but when I held my daughter in my arms for the first time, every sorrow over the past three years melted away. God has a way of taking our prayers and deepest longings and turns them into something far better than a life with no sorrows. Motherhood is the hardest, sweetest miracle. The hard part had just begun. This girl of mine has weathered childhood bullies that circled her and pointed out a broken capillary on her face. Something so small was poked at until it became inflamed as children circled, taunting her. Doctors said she would outgrow it. But when other adults asked if she wanted to have it removed, she would say profound things like, “I think that it’s what makes me… me.” She came home sick that day from school. Later, while I held her, hot tears made tracks down her beautiful face as she told me what really happened after I asked why that tiny spot was swollen and red. I held her tightly as I prayed over her and cried with her. She was mine on loan, I couldn’t prevent her from hard things, but I could hold her and let her play hooky the next day for girl time with just the two of us.

Discipleship KIM CRUMRINE

I DIDN ’ T GROW UP IN A C HRISTIAN HOME . Even though I somewhat remember my grandparents going to church, we didn’t regularly go with them. We didn’t discuss faith in our home. Growing up I didn’t have any type of mentor or older women pouring truth into me. When my parents divorced I was young and we moved, so what influence I did have was gone. I spent my childhood, teen years, and young adult years lost, searching, and not knowing about the deep, unconditional love and acceptance of the Heavenly Father and my worth in Him. However, as a young adult I recognized that He was there, saving me, and loving me even in my sin and pain. My husband and I made the decision to start attending church and that was when my life changed. After accepting Christ in 1999 and going on to have two amazing boys, God started nudging me. He knew my story, He knew where I came from and He had a plan for me. I had a huge heart for teen girls, especially the lost, and God convinced me deeply to GO! I didn’t know what that meant at the time but I knew His plan would be perfect. My hope was that they know their worth, know they are treasured and to know they are dearly loved by their Heavenly Father. I had a deep desire for them to see and know grace and forgiveness. After several years, many arguments with God, a few lies from the enemy, and some resistance on my part, I began leading my first girls group in 2012 - a program for middle school girls called Girlz for God. The other leaders and I would come in before school and meet with groups of girls to go through lessons sharing His truth and talking about ways to navigate middle school. We

Being involved in our Bible study/discipleship group was a very important part of my high school years. Even when things got hard, I knew that I had Mrs. Kim and the girls in my group to pray with me, and we could look for answers together through our weekly meetups. It was so nice to have girls to study the Lord’s words along with, and create impactful and lasting relationships. Having those relationships and the mentorship from Mrs. Kim set me up to be successful on my own as I went on to college. I’m so grateful I was and am still a part of the group.

discussed little things like gossip and friendships, but also big things like dating, peer pressure, and purity. Their core scripture was Philippians 4:8, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” I was blessed to lead two different groups for three years each, through this program. I would not have guessed I would be leading, teaching, and mentoring a group of girls. I am grateful for a few mentors and very supportive sisters in Christ who stood by my side and encouraged me. The enemy knew my weaknesses and he was really good at pointing them out. I didn’t feel equipped or wise enough to be an example to these sweet girls. At times, the thought of the responsibility felt like so much pressure, but then I realized I couldn’t change their lives, but I could lead them to the One who would. It wasn’t long before I transitioned into a small group leader at my church. For a few years, I ministered to a lot of the same girls from Girlz for

God. While I enjoyed leading small groups, I felt called for more intimate relationships with teen girls in the form of discipleship groups. This group usually consists of four to seven girls. These were my favorite! For the group we would pick a Bible study to do together, read devotionals, discuss the world, or even just dig into one scripture, break it down and try to understand it. If the girls came to our weekly meeting and needed to talk the whole time, I would just sit and listen. If they came in with questions about worldly events or political issues, we would discuss those and see what Scripture had to say about them. There were some weeks we didn’t even do our lesson but those times were extremely instrumental in their spiritual growth. No matter what, we would always have great girl talk and conversation. Our time together was sometimes just about being present.

It’s really about meeting them where they are. I went on to lead two discipleship groups through their high school years. These times were so sweet and I will never forget them.

Discipleship group was a big staple in my middle school life. It gave me a group and a family I could stick close to and count on for some of my toughest years. Also, it gave me a leader who became a mom and a mentor. There are friends that I made in d-group who have stuck by my side to this day. Life continues every day and some days are not easy to conquer, but having girls, who become sisters, and a leader who continuously builds you up, gives you accountability, and a shoulder to lean on, helps you keep pushing through every day. They help keep your direction rooted in the Lord. Without this group I don’t think my life would be quite what it is now.

- Kumiko

I love being a boy mom and these opportunities gave me the ability to lead and pray over many of my son’s ‘girl’ friends. Having my “God” daughters has been a very special part of my life, one that I will cherish forever. Mentorship, discipleship, leadership or whatever you want to call it is so much more than just speaking the truth and learning God's word together.

It’s about walking through life with these girls, listening to them, guiding them, supporting them, praying for them, and picking them up when they fall. It’s not about judging them when they make mistakes or imposing your beliefs on them. Instead, I believe a mentor’s role is to guide them through mistakes and struggles with loving accountability. Honestly, this took me a few years to learn. It’s also about being messy, working through hard stuff, and answering difficult questions. When I began this journey, I hoped to become someone the girls could come to day or night no matter the struggle, someone that would listen, someone they were comfortable enough to trust, and someone that would pray over them. At times I would get phone calls or texts late at night or on the weekends, often about break ups, friend problems, personal struggles, peer pressure, or difficult family issues that they were dealing with. I have prayed for them through hard days at school, perfectionism, big tests, college stress, self-worth struggles, relationship struggles, family dynamics, life decisions, bullying, confusion, hurt, anger, and even mental health struggles. It wasn't always about the struggles, we were also able to celebrate victories and watch God walk them through the valleys. Parents are a wonderful gift from God, but let’s face it, sometimes kids open up to others better. I believe it’s important for all young people to have other God fearing adults in their lives--adults they can turn to and trust. There is comfort knowing there is someone to talk to that isn’t biased towards your situation, that doesn’t have a personal agenda, and can just listen. As a parent myself, I know that it’s hard to just listen when they are your own kids. My journey as a mentor for teen girls wasn’t always smooth. After my first couple of years, I realized how desperately I wanted them to have the relationships I didn’t have as a teenager, so I possibly pushed a little too much. I didn’t fully surrender myself or them to God. Initially I didn’t understand exactly how to simply walk beside them and guide them, but to let HIM do the rest.

We should plant the seeds and let God do the watering and growing. 78

The world is changed by your example, not by your opinions. There are times I should have just been there silently as an example of Christ and His unconditional love. If I had to change anything, I would go back and just be there, no matter what, no matter how hard, reminding them every day they were fearfully and wonderfully made in HIS image.

as a teenager. Believer or non-believer, there is always a chance of being lost, but God is always with them. I had to remind myself their relationship with Christ isn’t up to me, it’s up to them. As a mentor, it’s my responsibility to pray over them, then surrender them to the Lord. Although it hurts to watch them stray or push back, it’s a natural part of this type of relationship.

Leading these girls through the years came with some adventures. We served together, went on retreats, attended church camps, went out to eat, and had slumber parties. We prayed, sang, danced, laughed, cried, and loved each other. I truly wanted to be present for them in all aspects of life. Don’t get me wrong, many of them had amazing parents, but our relationship was different. Our groups allowed these girls the ability to be vulnerable, empathetic, and encouraging. I witnessed them truly love and encourage one another. We truly became sisters in Christ!

After a very frustrating season, a very wise person once told me, “LEAN IN - teenagers are a little unpredictable and frustrating, but I promise they are listening. When they decide to come back, you will still be here and that’s all they need.”

Some of my first “God” daughters have moved on. They are grown, in college, starting families, or beginning careers. I am blessed to call them friends. I love that I can still meet them even where they are now. Some reach out to me every now and then for prayer or advice. When that happens I definitely feel God worked through me to make a difference.

What I didn’t know is how much I would be blessed by being a part of their lives and how much they would teach me about the Bible and God's love. Leadership or mentorship is never without struggles. There was never a shortage of healthy disagreements or misunderstandings. These were instances to learn from and they always helped me grow in my walk. Many girls over the years attended groups, but resisted any type of love or guidance and definitely weren’t ready for a true walk with Jesus. That was, by far, the biggest struggle for me. I desperately wanted to rescue them. It broke my heart to think of them as being as lost as I was

This generation of youth has a very different way of looking at life and I believe they are questioning their faith even more. There is a lot of pressure and influence around them, from school to friends to social media, and sometimes even their own family. There are a lot of outside influences telling them not to believe what Scripture says and that it’s fine to live how they want, with no consequences. Every minute I spent with them and every minute the Holy Spirit was present with us, was a win for His kingdom. The advice I wish someone would have sat me down and shared when I started this journey is -

love them….. always, be patient, listen, be available, and be intentional. Life as a teenager in this day and age is tough; they need all the support they can get. My prayer for my girls is the legacy left that is of Jesus, not my own. When it’s all said and done, I pray they always set their minds on things above, have an intimate relationship with Jesus, and fully grasp His love for them!

Mentor

Mentoring youth can be challenging, but also rewarding. If anyone is considering a discipleship or mentorship of any kind, Kim recommends these eight things: Pray about it. Sometimes what we want is not necessarily what God wants for us Contact a youth pastor at your church to see if there are any current programs in place or to see how you can volunteer in youth ministry. Decide what age group you would like to mentor and for how long. Understand that you don’t have to be a theologian to mentor and leave a lasting legacy. Research Bible studies and/or content that pertains to your age group. Talk to your group about what they want to learn about and what they hope to take from your group. Stay focused on your goal for your group, but also be flexible. Always make sure you’re speaking absolute truth. If you aren’t sure of an answer, ask another person you trust-- Bible teacher or a Pastor.

pray out loud and later became an informal mentor to me as I stepped into women’s ministry. Lois passed on the power of prayer and encouraged me to seek God’s will in everything. Jeanne was an encourager and cheerleader when we relocated from North Carolina to Kentucky. Lisa modeled godly leadership and the importance of regular Bible study. Intentionally or not, these women poured into my life and provided accountability and encouragement to live like Christ. The world needs more Elizabeths and Marys, women who are willing to pass down the legacy of living a Christ-focused life. In my church and community, I find that the generation gap is wide and women aren’t organically connecting with one another. Sometimes women need a nudge.

Although these tips are for small group and women’s ministry leaders, you’ll likely find parts applicable in your spheres of influence.

1.

ASSIGN SEATS.

I know you may get some push-back on this one, but it works! If you’re using nameplates, simply set them up in advance. If you have nametags for your event, assign table numbers mixing women of different ages. Phase-out any activities or structure in place that divides women by their age. For more information on how our team has divided women into groups, check out womensministrytoolbox.com/how-to-divide-women-into-groups.

2. UPDATE YOUR ACTIVITIES, DECORATIONS, AND PUBLICITY, IF NEEDED. Survey your women and find out what needs the younger women have that you could meet. Perhaps they need a “mommy group” with some mentor moms, or they may be interested in outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, or skiing. Purposefully select trendy decor and colors – Pinterest is full of ideas. Opt for simple and classy instead of cutesy and quaint. Cutesy names and overly themed events subtly signal events are more focused on fun and fellowship than spiritual substance. Your event title could be keeping away women who are looking for depth and want to grow spiritually Publicize your events in ways that reach those younger generations. Try connecting with them via Instagram and texting. Facebook will hit some of your 30 somethings, but not many younger ones. Simple and classy rule here too. And don’t forget to advertise events as open to women of all ages, don’t assume they know they are invited.

82

S WEET T O T HE S OUL FAITH | S UMMER 2021

3. SELECT A TIME THAT WORKS FOR WOMEN OF ALL AGES. Are you scheduling events when younger women are available? You’ll be leaving out a large group of working women if most of your events are offered during the daytime. That may mean adding an evening Bible study or an evening moms group. Not sure, ask them on a survey.

4. OFFER CHILDCARE. Whether it’s a church event or Bible study offered in your home, some women need to bring their children. Consider recruiting a teen to help with childcare (homeschooled teens are sometimes available during the day).

5. TACKLE TABOO TOPICS. Women of all ages struggle with sexual addiction, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, identity, and self-image. In a culture where Christian voices are often muted, we need to listen to struggles and compassionately point women to the truth of God’s Word.

6. STRENGTHEN DISCIPLESHIP SKILLS. Discipleship efforts often sputter because women do not feel equipped. They may lack the knowledge or confidence to teach someone how to study God’s Word, pray out loud, or share their testimony. We need more legacy makers passing on their wisdom through Titus 2-type relationships.

What is your role in cultivating a community of legacy makers? Perhaps you’re sensing a nudge from the Holy Spirit to write a letter thanking someone who has left the imprint of their faith on your life. Ask God to show you whose life He wants you to pour into. If you’re not a part of a Bible study group, seek out or start a group that includes women of all ages. Seek out the Elizabeths God has already placed in your path.

WAS BLARING FROM THE RADIO AS THE DOOR OPENED , JINGLING THE BELLS .

Andy looked up from the counter, and his eyes followed her across the room. She gently laid the little girl down in the last booth. The edges of her bell bottom jeans were dusty. The sweltering July heat saturated her clothes and brow with sweat. Her long dark curls were tied up in a messy ponytail with a hot pink scarf matching her peasant blouse. The bold color highlighted her striking, dark tan. She slid down into the seat, physically drained. Andy grabbed a pitcher of ice water, two glasses with straws and headed straight to her. She looked up, and their eyes met as he set the glasses down and started pouring. ‘Oh, thank you, it’s so hot.’ ‘Yeah, we call it the dog days of summer.’ She faintly laughed. ‘Are you hungry?’ She hesitated. ‘I’m sure Lily is,’ pointing to the toddler fast asleep. ‘What about you?’ ‘I’m too hot to eat right now. Can you give us a few minutes till she wakes up? ‘Sure, take your time, cool off.’

'Thank you so much. I've been carrying her in this heat for over an hour, and I'm exhausted. My car broke down just outside town.'

‘Thank you,’ she smiled, tilting her head to the right as their eyes locked. She’s gorgeous, he couldn’t help thinking, yet he sensed a deep sadness. It didn’t take long before a few male customers were scoping her out. Andy stepped behind the counter just as Chaz motioned for him. ‘Who’s the babe?’ ‘Beats me, Chaz, but why don’t you give her a break and mind your own business?’ ‘I may be the break that little flower child needs, Handy Andy.’ He turned away with no reply but felt his face flushing in anger. It was no secret they had bad blood, but something inside him shifted, he resolved to protect her. He scribbled an order down and gave it to Roscoe through the window. Ten minutes later, he heard the chatter. Lily awakened, and the young women steadied the glass for the toddler to drink. When the child smiled, she smiled back even bigger. He glanced up every few moments while turning chocolate shakes on the shake machine. Grabbing a tray, he loaded the shakes along with two plates of burgers and crinkle fries. ‘You’re the 100th customer this week; that means you bagged lunch on the house.'

‘What?’ She looked up perplexed.

‘That’s a bummer. What are you driving?’

'Oh, it's just a little promotional thing we do around here to keep people coming back. Hope you like burgers and shakes.'

‘A slug bug.’

‘We love them,’ she said, looking stunned.

‘Well, you might be in luck. My uncle Herschel has a garage over on Broadway; he works on Volkswagens.’

‘Do you need anything else? How about ketchup?’

‘Really?’ Her green eyes brightened and then faded as she looked down. ‘Yeah, he’s a good guy. Reasonable rates. You rest awhile. I'll be back to check on you.’

‘Yes, that'd be great; Lily loves ketchup.’ ‘I do, I wuv ketsup, Mista!’ The toddler belted out as she scrunched up her tiny, sun-kissed nose. The child's long blond curls were frizzy from the heat, and her puffy cheeks were as cute as her big, sky blue eyes.

Andy laughed at the child’s precocious ketchup declaration.

‘She sure knows what she likes.’

‘Well, let me grab you some ketchup Miss Lily.’ Andy winked at her before heading to the counter.

‘You have no idea,’ Mae-Lyn replied with a snicker.

‘Anything else you Chicks need?

'Here's my uncle's number at the garage. He can tow your car in and take a look at it if you'd like.'

Lily giggled. ‘He call us Chicks, Mae-Mae.’ ‘Yes, he did, silly Lily.' She said, laughing. 'Thank you so much; this looks delicious.'

‘Oh, it’s the best burger in town, Mae-Mae.’ 'Actually, my name is Mae-Lyn,’ she revealed bashfully. ‘That’s a beautiful name, Mae-Lyn. I’m Andy, nice to make your acquaintance.’ ‘Likewise, Andy.’ She grinned, tilting her head to the right, again, making his heart go thump, thump for the second time. ‘Let me know if you need anything.’ He glanced their way several times, watching them eat and laugh. The bond was strong. A few minutes later, he returned with Coca-Colas and two pieces of chocolate cake.

‘Oh, thank you. We need to be going but thank you, again.’ ‘Anytime.’ A strange sensation came over him, he knew she needed help, but he didn’t know what to say without prying. He watched them cross the street and enter the Ben Franklin Five and Dime. Then Chaz paid his bill and left. Andy clenched his fist when his nemesis entered the Five and Dime. Twenty minutes later, Chaz held the door for Mae-Lyn and Lily. They turned left, walking to the end of the street. Chaz was making big gestures with his hands, his face very animated. Stretching his neck, he watched them head into the park; Andy jerked off his apron and turned to Louise. ‘Weezie, can you lock up tonight?’ ‘Sure thang, honey. See you tomorrow.’

‘Mae-Mae! My fav-vo-wit.’ The toddler exclaimed.

‘Thanks, Weezie.’

Surprised, Mae-Lyn looked up at Andy.

Andy walked swiftly, retracing their steps as his heart pounded in his chest. Then he spotted them, sitting on a bench, and Chaz was nowhere in sight.

‘You don’t have to give us dessert.’ ‘Of course, I do. My sister is the best baker in town, and she'd be highly offended if you didn't try her chocolate cake. Besides, it's on the house; you're the 100th customer, remember?’

‘Mae-Mae, wook, it's Mista Andy,’ Lily pointed.

Mae-Lyn’s eye’s softened as if she wanted to cry. ‘You’ve been so kind, thank you.’

‘Hey, Andy,’ Mae-Lyn seemed surprised and relieved to see him.

‘No sweat, Mae-Lyn.’ He smiled with a wink, making her blush while dropping her head.

'I realized you might need a ride somewhere since your car is out of commission.'

Thirty minutes later, Mae-Lyn guided the toddler to the counter.

Mae-Lyn hesitated, looking down.

‘Thank you again for your kindness. Lily enjoyed her dinner immensely.’ ‘Goss, yeah. It waz dewishous.’

They laughed as Lily grinned ear to ear.

Suddenly he felt embarrassed. 'Hey, girls.'

‘We gonna’ camp out in da’ bug, it’s an aventure, Mista Andy.’ ‘Lily! Mister Andy’s not interested in our silly adventures.’

His heart sank, he knew she needed help, but it never occurred to him that she had no place to sleep.

‘You have no idea, girl. It sounds like you held your own with the notorious Chaz Parker. I hate I missed it.

‘I love adventures, Lily. I’ve camped out in my truck a few times.’

They chatted about the weather and the locals on the walk back. He led them up the rear staircase entrance, secluded from the public for privacy.

Mae-Lyn lifted her eyes to his. 'The truth is, I need to save my money to fix the car. So, we're just going to have some fun with it, right Lily? Maybe even count fireflies.' Lily grinned as her little head eagerly bounced up and down in agreement. 'Say, I have an empty apartment above the restaurant; why don’t you girls crash there till your car’s fixed?’ ‘Oh, I wouldn’t dare impose on your kindness anymore.’ 'It's no imposition. It's been empty a while, and I need someone to give it a good house cleaning. If you're up to it, it sure will help me out.’ ‘Really? I have a lot of cleaning experience, unfortunately.’ ‘Then it’s a deal.’

The apartment was spacious with two bedrooms and a bath. A massive kitchen with fancy, double ovens seemed out of place, and then she noticed two stylish avocado green refrigerators sitting sideby-side. ‘Somebody must cook a lot. This is amazing.’ ‘Yeah, this is where my sister, Katie, started her baking business and the diner. She lived here for a few years before getting married and moving out. The diner is actually hers; I'm just helping out this week while she and her family are out of town at the beach.’ 'So where do you usually work? ‘I’m a farmer.’ She grinned. ‘Hmm, I would have never pegged you for a farmer.’

She hesitated, ‘I guess so, Mister Andy.’

‘My family owns a dairy farm. My degree is in agriculture; I spend a lot of time with cows, normally.'

‘Groovy!’

Mae-Lyn laughed.

‘Grooby!’ Lily repeated with enthusiasm.

She walked around the apartment gazing at the trinkets, books, and albums neatly stacked by the turntable. Sly and the Family Stone, the 5th Dimension, Creedence Clearwater Revival, somebody has decent taste in music, she surmised.

They laughed as Mae-Lyn pulled Lily close, kissing her on the forehead. ‘Say, where did Chaz go?’ ‘Who’s Chaz?’ ‘The guy that followed you out of the Five and Dime.’ ‘Is he a friend of yours?’ 'I wouldn't call him a friend; I'm not a fan.' ‘Whew, good. I’m not either.’ Andy burst out laughing, and Lily joined him even though she had no clue what was funny. ‘I told him to get lost, but he's persistent.’

Andy pulled out a basket of toys from the closet for Lily. The toddler squealed upon finding a ratty, stuffed Curious George and a few of his adventure books. Moving slowly, she picked up various picture frames of family photos, imagining the happy occasions and perfect holidays they celebrate together. They’re a real family, she thought to herself. Glancing up at a framed, cross-stitch portrait set in jewel -toned threads, she squinted, reading the phrase a few times in her head. Now faith is the S UMMER 2021 | S WEET T O T HE S OUL FAITH

substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Mae-Lyn froze, staring at the cross-stitched words. Big tears welled up in her eyes, and she whispered, 'Faith.' She closed her eyes and saw her face, her smile. Sensing something amiss, Lily staggered over to Mae-Lyn. Clutching Curious George in one arm, she wrapped her other arm around Mae-Lyn’s legs. Wiping a tear away, Mae-Lyn reached down to caress Lily’s golden locks while her eyes remained closed. Andy discerned a deep pain to his core. A shared grief he didn’t know what, but he knew broken hearts when he saw them. He remained still, not wanting to intrude in their private moment, so he prayed. God, whatever loss they have experienced, give them hope. Show me how to help them, please. Finally, Mae-Lyn turned to Andy. ‘I’m sorry. I drifted off there a moment.’ ‘No sweat.’ ‘This is a very nice apartment, Andy, and it doesn’t look dirty to me.’ ‘Oh, it is. Everybody in the family crashes here from time to time when they don’t want to make the drive back out to the country on late nights.’

‘Thank you. We've been on the road for two weeks. It's very cozy; I'm sure we will rest well tonight.' ‘Glad to help. Say, why don’t I drive you out to your car to get your bags?’

The picturesque town was idyllic in every way. They passed the Keller Savings & Loan, Hammer’s Hardware, and Pinky’s Record shop ablaze with psychedelic lights in the window. The town square with a majestic, multi-tiered fountain showcased grand magnolia trees anchoring the square’s four corners. The Groovy Garden Center and post office were situated just beyond the Regas Restaurant on the opposite corner of Main. They turned right on Magnolia Avenue, and there sat Keller’s Bakery with quaint sidewalk seating and umbrellas reminiscent of a postcard she once received from Paris, France. ‘That’s my sister Katie’s bakery.’ ‘It’s lovely, reminds me of France.’ ‘Funny you’d say that, she went to cooking school in France.’ ‘Wow.’ Lily fell asleep against Mae-Lyn's shoulder before they reached the end of Magnolia Avenue. She lifted her tiny torso, gently laying Lily’s head down in her lap. ‘She’s out like a light.’ ‘Yep, it doesn’t take long once the car gets moving. She’s a great little travel companion.’ ‘Where are y’all headed?’

‘Back to Philadelphia. We took a trip down to Arkansas to find a relative. Things haven’t worked out like I thought they would.’ ‘I’m sorry to hear that. Do you have a job?’

‘Oh, I didn’t think about that. Would you mind terribly?’

‘I did, not anymore.’ She looked off to the right, biting her lip.

‘Not at all. I’ll give you the grand tour of River View on the way.’

'Jobs are easy to come by; I wouldn't worry much about it. You'll find another one.'

'Let's go; I can’t wait,’ she said with a smile after tilting her head.

‘Yeah, I guess so. But I loved my job. I’d worked hard to move up in the ranks.’

He wasn’t sure, but his heart might have skipped a beat this time.

‘What did you do?’

and snacks to stock the green avocado fridges. He wrote down his phone number and told her to help herself with anything she wanted or needed. ‘I’m just a phone call away.’

‘How did you know that?’ she asked in disbelief.

‘Thank you. I know I keep saying it, but you have no idea how appreciative I am. You've been very kind.’

I spent some time in Philly. My college roommate lives there. We listened to WMMR all the time. That’s a pretty big market. I’m impressed.’

‘I’m glad to help. And … I’m going to pray for the perfect job, one that’s even better than the one you loved.’

‘Yeah, it was a cool job. I headed up the British invasion end of programming. It’s been pretty intense formatting with the VietNam war and all the protests.’

She raised her brow in surprise, not sure how to respond. No one had ever offered to pray for her. She wasn’t even sure if prayer was real, so she just smiled in return.

‘I imagine so. Ever meet any big acts?’

‘Goodnight, Andy.’

‘A few. But that’s over now. My boss said if I wasn’t back by a certain date, he was giving my job to someone else. I didn’t make it back, obviously.’

‘Night, Mae-Lyn. I’ll see you in the morning for breakfast.’

‘I’m sorry, Mae-Lyn.’

‘Okay,’ she responded humbly. Somehow, she knew he wouldn’t take no for an answer.

‘Par for the course. Nothing good in my life ever works out, it seems.'

‘Oh, Andy, what’s your last name?’

He felt that deep sadness overwhelm her again. The vivid setting sun was just above the tree-tops when Andy pulled up to her Volkswagen. He pushed the yellow bug off into the grass and locked it up after loading her suitcases into the back of his truck. The ride back was silent, so he prayed. Making her uncomfortable or pushing her to talk would only make things worse. He carried the luggage up the stairs as Mae-Lyn followed with Lily fast asleep in her arms. Looking over the railing, the lettering on his truck door caught her eye, Keller Farms. There was that distinct name again; she'd seen it all over town. Keller Bakery, Keller Savings & Loan, Keller's Diner, Keller Avenue. Is he a Keller? She wondered.

‘Keller, Andrew Mason Keller. Named after my granddaddy.’ I knew it, she said to herself. Andy paused, resting his head against the steering wheel before starting his truck. 'God, I don't know how to pray for her, so help me. Please give her hope. Give them both, rest tonight. Provide a job and healing. Show me how to encourage her and protect them from the enemy. In Jesus’ name, amen.

To be continued ..........

He showed her where to find fresh linens, then ran downstairs to the diner and grabbed some drinks

is the best season for relaxing and taking things slow. With school schedules mostly wrapped up, many families, including my own, relish the opportunity to spend more time together. One of my happy places (regardless of the season) is the kitchen, and it has been for most of my life. Four special women (my mom, mother-in-law and both grandmothers) influenced me and taught me well.

A favorite part of my time there is to cook with my five-year old granddaughter, Neely. She started helping when she was two and her first lesson was stirring a bowl of pancake batter. Then it was on to bigger and better things like cracking eggs and measuring dry ingredients and liquids. If she knows I’m cooking she makes a beeline for the kitchen and always asks, “Can I help?” Then she moves her stool to the counter, washes her hands and gets ready for the tasks ahead. She’s got a pretty good attention span for sticking with the meal preparation and it doesn’t hurt to have a tasty reward waiting at the end. I don’t know if she will make cooking a lifelong favorite, but for now she loves helping, and it is a sweet time of fellowship for both of us. I am grateful for the special moments, the lessons learned, and our time together as we equip the next generation. I pray one day she looks back on these moments as priceless memories and time well spent. I know I do. Here are four tasty summer recipes to prepare for friends and family. They don’t require a lot of ingredients or time and, more importantly, they are Neely approved.

Bible Art Journaling

MYTH-BUSTING JANA KENNEDY-SPICER

When I began incorporating Bible Journaling into my Bible Study time, I was intimidated by all the pics of other people’s beautiful journaling. I've always been a doodler and a letterer but a lot of journaling styles didn't really represent a doodling or lettering approach. They looked more like scrapbooking. They were beautiful, but just not me. So I hesitated and didn't begin Bible Journaling because I didn't think what I could see in my heart would "look right". But before we talk about that myth (and others), let me ask you a question. Why? Why do you (want to) Bible Journal? Beyond the, "it looks pretty" and "everyone's doing it" there are much deeper heart reasons.

106

a single scripture and in conversation with God is a great way to really plant God's Word in our hearts. SLOW DOWN- in our crazy fast paced world, Bible Journaling is a great way to slow down and recharge. FEED YOUR SOUL - As God's children we need to stay close to Him so our soul can be nourished. Exercising my creative muscles and spending time with God is a double blessing for me. CALM ANXIETY - there is something so calming about using the right side of the brain. Scientific? Oh, I don't know. Whether that's the reason, or it's spending time with God, I know my stress just melts away when I'm Journaling in my Bible. So what is your why?

SPEND TIME WITH GOD - yes, this really is the first and most important reason. When we open our Bible, we open the door for God to meet with us. Invite Him in and He speaks to us.

When I talk about Bible Journaling, I hear a variety of responses, but typically one (or more) of four myths that most believe to be true.

MEMORIZE SCRIPTURE - whether this is a why or a by-product, I find that focusing on a single scripture for this concentrated period of time is a great way to remember the scripture verse.

1. I don't have a special Journaling Bible 2. I can't draw, I'm not an artist, or I'm not creative 3. I don't have the right tools or supplies 4. I can’t write in my Bible

REFLECT ON SCRIPTURE - spending time focused on

Do any of these sound familiar? Have you said one or heard a friend voice one of these reasons. Let's

S WEET T O T HE S OUL FAITH | S UMMER 2021

take a look at each one and see if I can convince your otherwise.

Myth #1 - Must have a Journaling Bible This myth I totally bought into. Even though I would draw and doodle just about everywhere, I thought I had to have an official "journaling" Bible. And, let's face it, they can be expensive. There are plenty of other resources to use as you begin your Bible Journaling adventure. • Blank journals & sketch books • art papers & note cards • a regular Bible or vintage Hymnal • anywhere you can write or draw! Remember your "why". Why are you journaling scripture? All of the why's still apply no matter the Bible or resource being utilized.

Myth #2 - Must be artistic or crafty First of all, no you don't. Why? Because Bible journaling isn't about you or your talent. Remember your "why" - this time spent in the Bible is all about spending time with God. And He loves to spend time with you - just the way you are. Besides, God cares more about your heart than your art. But if you're looking for a little inspiration, here are a couple of my favorite journalers:  Karla Dornacher of Karla Dornacher Designs  Tracy Pounds of Miss Tracy Creates I'd also like to invite you over to our Sweet To The Soul Shoppe on etsy, where we have downloadable Soul Inspired Bible Journaling Templates / Color Your Own Bookmarks.

supply collection. And I did! Turns out, my go-to must haves are: 1) a #2 pencil, 2) eraser and 3) a thin black marker (love Sharpie Pens!). That's it! I also love to use 4) colored pencils, 5) watercolors, and 6) gelatos. Yes, there are a lot of supplies you can use, I encourage you to find what fits your personal style and preference.

Myth #4 - I can’t write / color in my Bible I struggled with this one at first also. All I can tell you is to do what makes you comfortable. Several ladies in my home journaling group began with just using blank journals. They brought their Bibles to our classes to use for the study portion, then wrote their notes and added their art to their blank journals. Some eventually moved on to journaling Bibles which included open space in the page margins specifically for writing and note taking. I use a Bible like that. But I do color all over the pages. The Bibles I use for journaling are specifically for journaling. It’s not my Bible which I read from.

GOD CARES more about your heart than your art

Myth #3 - Must have a lot of Supplies This is my fav myth to bust, because I really believed it! I saw all the beautiful pages by others and felt so intimidated. Surely I had enough supplies in my 'more than I will ever use' craft

My journaling Bibles have become so special to me. I’ve seen others which look like a scrapbook when they are full. Mine doesn’t look like that, but it really is a scrapbook of sorts. Flip ping through the pages is one of my favorite things to do. As I look at the colored pages and read the hand written notes, each page kindles my memory of that time spent with God and what he taught me through his word. Those pages may just look like a coloring book to others, but to me, they hold very precious memories of time spend with my Heavenly Father.

Are you ready to move past the myths and let your soul be inspired? That's great! So now you might be asking where do I start? What S UMMER 2021 | S WEET T O T HE S OUL FAITH

107

do I journal? If you are already using a Bible Study or a Scripture Reading List, that’s a great place to start. Select a scripture from either of those sources and add your learnings, observations or prayers to your journal or Bible. Have you read an inspirational devo or blog post lately? Add notes and artwork to your journal or Bible, related to what you learned about God.

I also love to journal sermon notes. The notes I take during church get messy (I love taking notes!). So Sunday afternoons are a great time to continue in God’s Word adding the teachings from our pastor. Here in our Inspire Journal, we’ve added several resources which can be used for Bible Journaling. 1. The Scripture art on the next page of Proverbs 31:26 can be cut out and colored, then inserted into your journal or Bible as a “tip-in”. After you have finished coloring or painting the page, cut it out and use washi tape to attach the artwork in your journal or Bible.

Template Transfer Technique This ribbon design featuring Proverbs 31:26 is one of my fav pages in my journaling Bible. It is a reminder to me that both of these characteristics—strength and dignity– can co-exist in the inspiring woman. If you would like to add this artwork to your journal or Bible, it is really very easy. You will need 1) pencil 2) graphite or carbon paper 3) washi tape. Simply place the graphite paper between your journal page and the design to the right. Temporarily tape the pages in place with a couple of pieces of washi tape to help keep the pages aligned. Then trace over all the lines of the artwork. If the template is too large for your journal or Bible, simply make a photocopy reducing the size as needed.

108

S WEET T O T HE S OUL FAITH | S UMMER 2021

2. Flip the page and you will find three colorable bookmarks or journaling templates. You can use these a couple of different ways. Color the designs, cut out and use as a bookmark or tipin. Or transfer or trace the artwork directly into your journal or Bible, then paint or color. I hope this has encouraged you to spend some creative time studying your Bible and worshiping our Lord and creator using creative arts.

DARLENE SCHACHT

I’m not sick, I’m not dying, and I’m not counting down my last days, but someday I will be. One day I’ll say goodbye to this world as I step into the arms of my Savior.

The question is, how will I be remembered? Or better yet, how will my God be remembered? Last summer a friend of mine received a special gift on her birthday. A card, from her mother who passed on months before. She had the forethought to write each child a card before she was gone. Something to remember her by. Something to brighten their day in her absence. Breathtakingly beautiful, if you ask me.

110

S WEET T O T HE S OUL FAITH | S UMMER 2021

My story is different. I’m writing a legacy letter, but it’s not what you think. I’m journaling through the Bible. Highlighting the parts that stand out to me and writing notes for generations to come. My hope is that my children, my grandchildren, and my great-grandchildren will have a keen interest in reading those thoughts that I leave behind. Notes like these are just some of the ways I’m encouraging them:

“Pay close attention to this. ” “Prayer must be a part of your life.” “God answers prayer.” “He wants our obedience.” “Love is sacrifice.” “Contentment leads to peace with God.”

“Love is not always easy.” “Trust in His timing.” “Always remember, seasons pass.” I want my children and their children to pick up the Bible and to find encouragement there. I want them to stop and let scripture sink in. There’s an extra blessing in this, because I find it relaxing. I love doodling on the pages while I meditate on the words. I’m not very good at my craft – I can see that – but hopefully with some practice I’ll fine tune a few things. I need to practice my handwriting, and as far as coloring goes–it’s been several years. *smile* It’s keeping me away from computer, which is kind of nice after all of these years. I’m spending time at the kitchen table, drawing, and coloring, and highlighting some words. Want a sneak peek? I’ve shared some of the pages below. I hope you enjoy them! You are loved by an almighty God, Darlene

She began her publishing journey about twelve years ago when she pioneered one of the first online magazines for Christian women, known at the time as “Christian Women Online Magazine.” After three years, Darlene left CWO to blog as a solo author at Time-Warp Wife Ministries. It was also during this transition that she worked alongside actress Candace Cameron Bure to write the NYT Best-Selling book, Reshaping it All: Motivation for Spiritual and Physical Fitness. Reshaping it All was the winner of both the 2011 USA Best Book Awards and the 2012 Christian Reading Retailers Choice Awards. Author of more than 15 books, Darlene continues to write and to minister to her readers through her blog at TimeWarpWife.com.

JANA KENNEDY-SPICER

Can I tell you how much I love my journaling Bible? Actually, I should say my first journaling Bible. I do love all of my journaling Bibles, but in my first, I journal special legacy Scriptures for my family members. I select a Bible verse which represents each family member and add an illustration which exemplifies their character, personality or something they love. For example, my husband Marty is very generous. He definitely has the spiritual gifts of charity and service. He is a country farm boy at heart who loves tractors. So, for him I journaled an illustration of a tractor for 2 Corinthians 9:10-11. My father loved to fish. He also was a deacon who loved to witness to people about Jesus. So for him, of course, I journaled a great big fish for Matthew 4:19. The color page featured here, is directly from my journaling Bible. This Scripture I selected to pray over one of our grandsons. He loves Jesus and my prayer for him is that he will become a mighty warrior for God’s Kingdom. You will note there is a blank box as part of the illustration, in my personal illustration, I have added his name, personalizing the Scripture and my prayer for him. Both of these methods of legacy journaling have made my journaling Bible all the more special to me. They have also created an unexpected benefit. My family all know that I journal and often ask me to bring my Bibles to family events. Or when the grandkids, or others, are at our home, they ask to look at my Bibles. They always ask questions about the Scriptures, the illustrations and people’s names I have notated. And of course they want to see their pages! This has opened a beautiful door for me to share God’s Word with them, young and old. These pages I have colored in my Bible have sparked some wonderful conversations. I am so thankful to God for meeting with me in the pages of His Word and allowing me to use art to build this type of legacy to pass along to the next generation of our family.

YO U K N O W J E S U S ?

God loves us so much that He sent His Son, Jesus, to die on the cross to pay the price for our sins and bring us into a relationship with Him. (John 3:16) Through Christ, we can know the promise of eternal life and experience the joy of knowing God here on earth! If you would like to have a relationship with God, the Bible tells us that the first step is acknowledging that we have sinned and that there is nothing we can do to earn God’s love (Romans 3:23-26). Next, we believe and confess that Jesus is Lord (Romans 10:9) and allow Him to guide our lives. Where we once wanted to control our own future, we now invite Jesus into our hearts to be Lord over our lives. Knowing God’s peace, perspective and purpose for your life begins with a personal relationship with Jesus. Would you like to accept Jesus as Lord of your life? You can pray the following prayer:

Lord, I confess that I have sinned against You and ask You to forgive me. I’m sorry that my sin has hurt You and other people in my life. I acknowledge that I could never earn salvation by my good works, but I come to You and trust in what Jesus did for me on the cross. I believe that You love me and that Jesus died and rose again so that I can be forgiven and come to know You. I ask You to come into my heart and be Lord of my life. I trust You with everything, and I thank You for loving me so much that I can know You here on earth and spend the rest of eternity with You in heaven.

Father, we gather together, united as your beloved Bride as one Church. We are set entirely free because of Your love; You lifted us out of the pits because of the blood of Christ. In unison, we praise Your holiness. We raise our hands to You, our King, our Savior, our forever Love.

Thank you for intimately caring for us; we cannot imagine the lengths of Your love. You chase after us, You fight for us; You have a purpose for us. We are flawless and beautiful because You have created us that way. Perfect because of love. You knitted us in our mother's womb, and planted a perfect seed within us to grow and serve You each day.

Please search us and find anything that holds us back from You and Your will over our lives. As we step into Your path, help us hold each other up with our words and deeds because we are one because of You. Help us move ahead, arm in arm, united. Just like the ones who went before us, cheering us on, may we do the same in the here and now. Because comparison kills Your calling, and that grieves Your Spirit. We are all special in Your sight.

Inspire us to move into Your service, Lord. Please pour over us Your passion and strength to forge ahead. Remind us not to outrun You, but stay in step with You, even when we want to retake the reins because us girls do like to take control of things.

Send us, God, send us to speak Your truth and love as You bloom the next generation for Your kingdom calling. Oh, for such a time as this, Father. Your Will. Your Way. Your Power. Your Path. Today, tomorrow, and forever.

Prayer by Michele O’Leary

In Your Name we pray. Amen
