Success at the Second Annual Chula Vista High School Health & Career Fair Over 600 students in grades 9-12 attended the 2nd annual Chula Vista High School Health and Career fair held on February 7, 2013. Participants received information pertaining to programs and services available through our community. Parents were invited to attend and participate as well. Of special interest was the opportunity for parents and students to tour San Ysidro Health Center’s Mobile Health Clinic, where families who seek medical insurance or have Medicare will be able to receive medical services on campus. Students also received a presentation by Bill Perno, South Bay Community Change Project, on the dangers of alcohol consumption and synthetic drugs. Students were invited to be members of the South Youth for Change Coalition — an active youth group involved in making positive changes for teens in the South Bay. THE SWEETWATER SPOTLIGHT Chinese Delegations visit Sweetwater AS SEEN IN
For over 20 years, the Sweetwater District has been privileged to welcome educational delegations from China. Recently, these delegations had the opportunity to visit with teachers and administrators from Hilltop High, Hilltop Middle and San Ysidro High. The Chinese delegations consisted of teachers and school administrators who were able to observe classroom instruction, discuss educational strategy and experience American culture firsthand. The partnership with Sweetwater is the oldest in the nation and we look forward to many more years of visiting with them!

Hilltop Middle School Library Sponsors a Book Drive for a Good Cause
Members of the “Hilltop Middle School Book Review Club” collected more than 650 books during a book drive for victims of Hurricane Sandy. Books were donated by Hilltop Middle School students and families, and also came from donations collected by Helen Narvaza, English teacher at Otay Ranch High School. Hilltop Middle’s teacher librarian, Erin Southam, contacted a teacher from Monmouth Beach School, a K-8 school located in Monmouth, New Jersey. Monmouth Beach School was completely destroyed during Hurricane Sandy and is currently being rebuilt with a planned reopening this spring. The books collected during the book drive will help Monmouth Beach School to reopen their library. Book review club members at Hilltop Middle could not be more proud of this accomplishment. As avid readers, they know the value of a well-supplied school library!

KUDOS! Olympian High Academic Decathlon Team
Olympian High has won the 2013 San Diego County Academic Decathlon, the fourth consecutive Decathlon championship for the South County campus. Olympian was crowned February 12 at the 31st Annual Academic Decathlon Awards Reception, held at USD’s Camino Hall in the Shiley Theatre, where all participating schools were honored. Sweetwater Says “NO” to Bullying Alexandra Coughlin, School Psychologist, San Ysidro High School Nationally, 1 out of 4 students is being bullied at school. These alarming statistics are not just nationwide, but include Sweetwater Union High School District as well. What are schools doing about this problem in SUHSD? In general, schools have a zero tolerance policy, but some schools are also in the process of communicating and establishing a specific “no bullying” policy. This policy extends beyond words on paper. Administration, teachers and students are active in prevention, education, and reporting bullying. Ambassadors 4 Kids (A4K) Club is a nationwide website that makes resources available for communities to, Get Involved Get the Facts and learn how to Stand Up and Speak Out (A4K, 2013) against bullying. A recent National survey conducted by A4K indicated staggering statistics: • 1 out of 4 kids are bullied. • 77% of students are bullied emotionally, verbally and physically. Cyberbullying statistics are rapidly approaching similar numbers, with 43% experiencing cyberbullying. • Of the 77% of students that said they had been bullied, 14% of those who were bullied said they experienced severe (bad) reactions to the abuse. • 1 in 5 students admit to being a bully, or doing some "bullying." • Each day 160,000 students miss school for fear of being bullied. • 43% of kids fear harassment in the bathroom at school. • 282,000 students are physically attacked in secondary schools each month. • Playground school bullying statistics - Every 7 minutes a child is bullied. Adult intervention - 4%. Peer intervention - 11%. No intervention - 85%. Click here to read on about this important issue.

Common COREner Spanish Language Arts, Literacy in History/Social Science, Science, and Technical Subjects A rich education recognizes the importance of language. With a fully developed mastery of primary and secondary languages, students are able to appreciate the literary and expressive quality of written texts and be able to use languages effectively to express their thoughts, reflections, and ideas in speech and writing. In addition, students are able to see themselves as participating in multiple linguistic communities and understanding the perspectives of different cultures. While one purpose of this standards document is to describe what we want students to know and be able to do, another is to create a common community of a shared educational goal, literacy in Spanish. Common COREner Explore SDCOE Common Core Resources The Learning and Leadership Services Division of the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) is committed to helping our districts learn about, roll out, and implement the California Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Implementing these standards is going to require staying current with all the information, professional development, and resources. It is the goal of SDCOE to help districts implement these new standards efficiently and successfully. The Common Core Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help their students. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy. Champions Add Up at Math Field Day On Saturday, February 23rd, middle school students from all over the Sweetwater District competed in the 14th annual Math Field Day. Mad Hatter, Tri-team Attack, and Battleship were just a few of the math-centered competitions students were able to compete in, either individually or in pairs and teams. This year’s championship title went to Eastlake Middle, coached by Paul Madurski and the “individual Math Wits” champion was student Jeanne Lee of Bonita Vista Middle. Winners will be representing Sweetwater at the Greater San Diego County Math Field Day event. Math Field Day is an egalitarian event that is coordinated by a host of Math teachers, school administrators and other district staff. The idea is that “We all celebrate math together” says Ruth Ann Duncan, District Math Resource teacher and project coordinator. The event is standards-based and therefore supports core math curriculum being taught each day in the classrooms. This year’s lead Coordinator was Bryan Schultz from BVH. Other coordinators include Dennis Williams and Robert Davis and past host Principal Oscar Medina. This year, three special plaques were awarded to Joseph Arllad of CVM, Laura Chavez of RDM and Paul Madurski of ELM in appreciation of years of math coaching service. The event was held at National City Middle School and hosted and coordinated by Marissa Gaucin, Assisstant Principal, and Principal Arturo Montaño. It is supported and sponsored by the Office of Curriculum and Instruction and the Office of State and Federal Programs.

Sweetwater Libraries Become Gilder Lehrman Affiliate Schools
Teacher Librarians across the district have been applying to become affiliate schools of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Teacher librarians at Bonita Vista Middle, Bonita Vista High, Chula Vista High, Eastlake High, Eastlake Middle, Hilltop High, Mar Vista Middle, Montgomery Middle, San Ysidro High, Southwest High, Olympian High and National City Middle have already signed up to have their schools participate in this excellent opportunity. The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History is a nonprofit organization that supports the study and love of American History. Their Affiliate School Program provides free resources and support for teaching and studying American History. Once enrolled in the program, schools receive unlimited access to the Gilder Lehrman Collection of more than 60,000 American historical documents, free classroom materials, and opportunities for students to participate in national history competitions. As teacher librarians in our district prepare to provide Sweetwater schools with resources that support the Common Core Standards, Gilder Lehrman gives students and staff access to primary source documents and teaching tools with an emphasis on literacy.

District Science Fair a Huge Success!! The 2013 SUHSD Science Fair was a great success. Over 165 District students with 152 projects from eleven District schools participated in the Science Fair, which was held for at Sweetwater High School. The Middle Schools which participated were: Rancho del Rey (Joan Tanis), Hilltop (Robert Floyd), Bonita Vista (Cynthia Shimasaki), Eastlake (Ricardo Martinez), National City (May Lualhati and Ryan Smith), Chula Vista (Eve Jones-Burton) and Montgomery Middle School (Carlos Valencia). The High Schools which participated were: Bonita Vista (Michelle Mardahl-Dumensil , Chula Vista (Steve Rodecker), Eastlake (Cheryl Bayley) and Sweetwater (Maureen Rymer and Carmen Villegas). Screeners from the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair Board selected those projects which would be moving on to the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair, which will take place on Wednesday, March 20 in Balboa Park. The letter ‘T’ in the results indicates a project was accepted by the GSDSEF. In all, there were 32 Junior Division Projects and 18 Senior Division Projects taken by GSDSEF. Each year two sweepstakes awards in the Junior Division are given at the SUHSD Science Fair, one in the life sciences and one in the physical sciences. Sweepstakes = Junior Division Life Science – Rosa Lopez Junior Division Physical Science = Kyle McLellan This year two sweepstakes were given in the Senior Division. The Life Science Sweepstakes award went to Arantxa Ortiz, and the Physical Science Sweepstakes Award went to Jumertson Araga and Lawrence Lucero.

Many people were responsible for the successful science fair this year. A great deal of recognition goes to SUH Principal Roman Del Rosario and Assistant Principal Monica Raczkowski, who ensured that the science fair ran smoothly. A huge thank you goes to Ms. Mercedes Lopez in Student Support Services for providing funding for materials at each of the participating science fair sites, as well as awards and buses. Ms. Lopez’ Department has provided funding for the science fair for many years now, and it is this funding which has contributed greatly to the success of the District science fair through the years.

Community Opportunities UCSD Offers Summer Science and Technology Workshops Summer 2013 will be a summer of fun and learning at the San Diego Supercomputer Center on the campus of the University of California, San Diego. Summer offerings range from animation creation to programming to app development to GIS and 3D printing to game development and much more! Workshops are open to students in middle and high school but please see each individual workshop description, as some workshops are specific to high school students only. THE SWEETWATER SPOTLIGHT Stephen W. Hawking Charter School featured in Union Tribune AS SEEN IN
Stephen W. Hawking Math and Science Charter School celebrated its six-month anniversary recently by hosting a demonstration of how its elementary school students pick up STEAM, or science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. The grade-appropriate activities ranged from making geometric shapes with toothpicks and mini marshmallows to building a space shuttle ... out of cardboard. Eastlake High’s Dance Company Shines in San Francisco The ELH Dance Company traveled to San Francisco to dance at the convention The Pulse, which has faculty that work for “So You Think You Can Dance”, “X-Factor”, “America’s Got Talent”, Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, and many, many more. The ELH Dancers did an amazing job as dancers and as representatives of SUHSD! Director Kristin Greenway placed the ELH dancers in the PRO room so that they had to really push themselves to the limit. They were in the room with professional dancers and they consistently were “called out” and highlighted by many of the faculty to demonstrate and dance out on the floor for others to watch! Next, their performance showcase piece “Diamonds” was chosen as “Choreographer’s pick” by the Pulse faculty to come back this summer and perform AGAIN! Greenway’s troupe is also waiting to hear if they caught the eye of scouts there from “America’s Got Talent.” Several dancers also received scholarships. Janelle Adviento received Protege, which means she was hired by the faculty to work for the Pulse to come to every convention, the highest honor. The Pulse faculty felt Janelle is a star and will hire her in the future! We may see her working someday soon in a music video or on one of our favorite shows! Other scholarship winners include: Nick Gayya, Kirstie Cristobal, Emily Rosario, Rebecca Robinson, Savvy Sicat, CJ DelaVega, Julian Sena, and Aaron Mondares. These dancers all have different opportunities to attend conventions and summer intensives. The ELH dance program is growing fast and strong. Greenway is proud of the dancers and the way they represented Eastlake. She says “They were truly professional and stood out in every way!”
THE SWEETWATER SPOTLIGHT San Ysidro High Students Come Together for Social Change AS SEEN IN
Using the Safe School Ambassadors Program from the Bay Area-based organization, Community Matters; students at San Ysidro High recently spent two days learning how to better themselves and better their school community. Using an “inside-out” approach, the program seeks to make social change in students and ultimately decrease bullying and violence. THE SWEETWATER SPOTLIGHT Locally Grown Author Visits SUHi AS SEEN IN
Matt de la Peña came home...for a visit at least. A former National City resident, De la Peña is an accomplished teacher of creative writing. He visits high schools and colleges throughout the country to discuss reading, the craft of writing, and most importantly, things that inspire him to write. His recent visit to Sweetwater High was special because his parents met, grew up and went to Sweetwater High. He feels that this homecoming is a special tribute to them. Blind Date with a Book at San Ysidro High Students at San Ysidro High spent the month of February being set up on blind dates…with BOOKS! Librarian Gabriella Padilla organized the month-long event to promote reading across campus. Both students and staff were invited to read books that were wrapped up to hide their “identity.” After reading books, participants completed a “Rate your Date” card to review the book they received. Each review entered them in a raffle for movie theater and restaurant gift cards. Students Brenda Vega and Miguel Villa won Movie tickets and staff member Bryna Drew won a dinner for two. Padilla’s mission is to awaken the love of reading to as many students as possible by promoting reading through funevents like this. Padilla’s library is a welcoming place for both students and staff. More than just a building full of literature, the SYH Library is a hub of friendship and communication on the SYH campus. In March, they will be participating in read Across America.
THE SWEETWATER SPOTLIGHT Otay Ranch High is Hitting the Math Target AS SEEN IN
83 ninth grade Algebra students saw their grades do a complete 180 degree turn for the better. In 8th grade, they earned mostly D's and F's in Math, but now they all have a C or higher in Algebra which is a rigorous A-G college preparatory course. Approximately 100 students were targeted and selected last year while still in 8th grade mathematics. They were selected to participate in an Algebra support program that began over the summer and has continued on campus at Otay Ranch High School.

SUPERINTENDENT’S COLUMN ‘Tis the Season - Banquet Season
Having been in education over the course of five different decades, I’ve seen a lot of changes. However, one of the things that hasn’t changed very much is the “seasons” that we all go through in education. We start the summer/fall season, move into the winter season and the end of first semester. That then becomes the Spring and then eventually into what I call “Banquet” season. Banquet season is the time that we all see at about the beginning of March when students, and we as staff, can see the end of school year fast approaching. In sports this is the fourth quarter, the last set or the last inning. It’s the time of the year when everything that we have done to that point is on the line and we have that desire to finish strong and show off our successes. Before we can celebrate the graduations and promotions, the end of the year award ceremonies and the last days before summer break, we need to ensure that we not only finish well, but finish strong. But before we celebrate, we know that there is much work to be done. In the Sweetwater District this is “crunch time.” Testing, end of course exams, financial aid applications, art exhibits and concerts and so many other celebrations of our work are on the horizon. We are proud of the work that each and every one of you does and we look forward to celebrating your successes with you.

As I go around to each of our schools I see this not only in you, but in the students. So let’s take a moment to regroup, collect ourselves and gear up for that final push to the finish line. Let’s take that extra minute to help a student who needs it, to work with an employee collaboratively and to go that little bit extra to make sure that the community knows that Sweetwater is seen as exceptional we see all of you. I have been saying to members of our community that I am a proud member of the Sweetwater Union High School district and I hope that you will echo that sentiment. Your source of pride should be the hard work that you do and ultimate success of our students. We have shown time and time again that we can make students succeed, even when others think that they might not. So when it’s time for that banquet, time for celebrating success of a student, remember that you had a direct impact on that success. Let’s celebrate that.
