COMPACT PROVIDES PATH FROM SWEETWATER TO SDSU It was a day for the high school sophomores to envision their futures at San Diego State University. The Olympian High students went on a sweeping campus tour past the library and bookstore with a brief stop at the statue of the university’s first president, where they heard about the tradition of rubbing his left foot for luck. They hunkered down in a computer lab to scrutinize their transcripts and enter their freshman grades into an online program to start the process of applying for college. And they heard — again — about the things they need to do to secure a guaranteed spot as an Aztec. It is a message pounded into every Sweetwater Union High School District student from the time they enter the seventh grade. They, including the 47 sophomores who visited SDSU in September, have a chance at an inside track to SDSU thanks to the district’s 14-year-old Compact for Success initiative. The program has inspired similar arrangements at other California State University campuses, including Cal State San Marcos and Sonoma State University. The exact total isn’t known because each is a campus-based agreement and not formally tracked by CSU system officials. “Even though we are just 10th-graders, they are still preparing us for college and graduation. I think it’s good so we know what is ahead of us,” said 15-year-old Sadie Agliam, whose sister is a freshman at SDSU and also went through Compact. Read the complete article here.

DAVID COBIAN TOP 10 SAN DIEGO COUNTY TEACHER OF THE YEAR Sweetwater High School math teacher David Cobian was named top 10 2013-14 San Diego County Teacher of the Year at the annual Salute to Teacher ‘s Awards Gala on October 5. Cobian was among 45 teachers nominated for the 2013-14 San Diego County Teacher of the Year. Nominees were selected from approximately 26,000 current teachers in the region. Cobian began his full-time teaching career with the Sweetwater District in 2003, as a math teacher and says he can’t see himself anywhere else. “Growing up in a single parent household where my mother worked two jobs to support my brother and I is something my students and I have in common,” said Cobian. “College came unannounced to me. Had it not been for my many mentors along the way, I would not be where I am today. ” As a San Diego native and graduate of Morse High School in San Diego Unified, Cobian can relate to challenges his students face on a day-to-day basis. Prior to coming to Sweetwater, Cobian worked at Rosa Parks Elementary in San Diego Unified as a custodian who also volunteered to teach 5th grade math. It is in that position where Cobian developed his love for teaching and pursued a mathematics degree at SDSU. Since 2003, Cobian has taught Algebra, Geometry, Intermediate Algebra, Pre-Calculus and Calculus at Sweetwater High. “Knowing that my students wake up every day and come to school, it is my job to see their intelligence and reach them where they are,” said Cobian. “Wealthy or not, knowledge is knowledge and it’s free to everyone. I have to make sure I do my best to ensure all my students reach their full potential.”

EMPOWERING WOMEN AND MINORITIES THROUGH COMPUTER SCIENCE In an effort to model the national Computer Science industry movement targeting young people, particularly women and minorities, Sweetwater remains ahead of the curve in 21st Century Learning Skills. Sweetwater and Otay Ranch High Schools have been selected as pilot schools offering a new, innovative Advanced Placement (AP) Computer Science course to 10-12th grade students. The initiative was fostered by President Obama and many other industry and educational leaders such as Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg (creator of Facebook), and Hadi Partovi, cofounder of Code.org to place Computer Science as core curriculum in all high schools. Art Lopez, Computer Science and Applications Instructor at Sweetwater High, has overseen the program on his campus and can already attest to its success. “The Sweetwater District is on the forefront of providing our students with great opportunities to learn about Computer Science and other STEM courses directly or indirectly impacted by Computer Science,” said Lopez. “Technology is everywhere, so it’s even that much more important that we equip our students with tech savvy knowledge that will help them obtain a career in the future.”

SUHSD VISUAL & PERFORMING ARTS RELEASES 2013 WINTER SCHEDULE Sweetwater Union High School District’s Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) department has just announced its winter performance schedule! On October 22, enjoy the “District Orchestra Fall Concert” featuring the District String Orchestra and the District Symphonic Orchestra under the direction of Jennifer Jouan, Hugh O’Neill and Greg Caldera. SOUTHWEST MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT INSPIRES OTHERS, BATTLES CANCER Jose Montano, a 7th grader at Southwest Middle School is battling brain cancer with inspirational courage. He is focused on helping others even while he himself is in the hospital receiving treatments. Montano reached out to his school seeking support for a 5K Walk and Fun Run this Sunday October 13th at Liberty Station at 8AM. In his email letter, he included a link to a TV interview filmed last week, which you can view here. Assembly Bill 484 Signed into Law
Signed into law on October 2, 2013, Assembly Bill 484 (Bonilla) establishes the California Measurement of Academic Performance and Progress (CalMAPP) assessment system. The CalMAPP system replaces the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program. AB 484 calls for the transition to a system of assessments and assessment tools that cover the full breadth and depth of the curriculum. This transition will take several years to complete. For the 2013–14 school year, CalMAPP is comprised of the following: • Field test of the consortium (i.e., Smarter Balanced) summative assessment for English–language arts (ELA) and mathematics in grades three through eight and grade eleven. Each participating student will take either an ELA or mathematics field test. • Grade-level science assessments, including the California Standards Tests (CSTs), California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA), and the California Modified Assessment (CMA), in grades five, eight, and ten • CAPA for ELA and mathematics in grades two through eleven • Voluntary for grade eleven students, the Early Assessment Program in ELA and mathematics • Optional for local educational agencies (LEAs) to administer, the Standards-based Tests in Spanish (Further information about grade levels and subjects will be forthcoming.) New CCSS Professional Learning Module Available from the CDE The CDE is pleased to announce the release of the CCSS: Literacy in Science online
professional learning module. This module provides teachers, kindergarten through grade twelve, with information, strategies, exemplars, videos, and resources to integrate science content with reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities. Educators who engage with the learning in this module will take an important step toward connecting student learning in science to the knowledge and skills for success in college and career in the 21st century. The CCSS: Literacy in Science module was developed in collaboration with WestEd, the Orange County Department of Education, the California Science Project, the San Diego County Office of Education, and the Riverside County Office of Education. CDE Smarter Balanced Field Test Web Page Now Available The Smarter Balanced Field Test will take place March 18 through June 6, 2014. The CDE now has a Web page dedicated to providing information about the spring 2014 Smarter Balanced Field Test.
Visit the webpage that describes the purpose of the Field Test as well as the benefits that participation will provide to students, teachers, administrators, and LEAs. In addition, the Field Test Web page contains a link to questions and answers that address such topics as: • Who will take the Field Test? • What are the minimum technology requirements for the Field Test? • How long will the Field Test take to administer? • Will schools be able to select the content area(s) they administer during the Field Test? • Will there be a paper-and-pencil version of the Field Test?

COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITIES Sam’s Club Offers Free Passes to Military during Shutdown In response to the U.S. government shutdown of domestic military base commissaries, all U.S. Sam’s Club locations will be offering free club shopping passes to military personnel, retirees and their families, so they may continue to save on home and business essentials. Walmart Director Public Affairs & Government Relations Aaron J. Rios says Walmart “committed to supporting our military and their families in any way we can.” They know that military personnel and their families heavily depend on commissaries. In appreciation for the service the military provides members and communities, Walmart welcomes military families to shop their Club locations to help them meet family needs during uncertain times. To receive the temporary pass, guests should show military ID or proof of past/present military service at Sam’s Club Member Service counters. Upon showing military ID or proof of military service, guests will receive a temporary pass which waives the 10 percent nonmember service fee. They will continue to offer the temporary passes to military personnel and families until the U.S. government resumes domestic commissary operations.

San Diego Foundation Teachers' Fund The San Diego Teachers’ Funds supports K-12 public school teachers in San Diego County, including publicly funded charter schools. It provides mini-grants of up to $1,000 for materials and supplies, field trips, speakers or other costs for projects that improve the school or local community’s quality of life and teach students content and/or skills from the teacher’s curriculum. To apply, teachers need to complete a short application by the deadline of October 23, 2013. On October 26, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the San Diego County Federal, State, and Local Law Enforcement along with community partners will hold their seventh National Prescription Drug TakeBack Day, operating 40 collection sites around the county where individuals can turn in their unused, unneeded, expired prescription medications. • This service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. • Tablets, capsules, and all other solid dosage forms will be collected. Explore “STEM” Careers Initiative with SDSU Partnership
Nancy Taylor, Principal Investigator of the Exploring STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Careers Initiative at SDSU, just invited the SUHSD to join her in the second year of the implementation of their National Science Foundation Grant at SDSU. Imagine connecting our students, especially those who want to attend SDSU in the future, with this opportunity! The Exploring STEM Careers Initiative (ESCI) is a great opportunity for teachers to pursue STEM education with their students and to help teachers see the importance of STEM in students’ futures. Using methodologies of ESCI that are aligned with the Common Core and Next Generation Science Standard objectives, teachers can enhance their overall pedagogical approach. Teachers are invited to review the ESCI Overview and Teacher Recruitment flyers. They are hoping to recruit 9-12 teachers from our district to enjoy this experience. Teachers need not be math or science either! If the STEM approach interests you, then you are welcome to apply! There will be a Project Meeting on October 23 (substitute reimbursement provided). Most of the commitment for teachers begins in January-February through May in out-of-school time. MONTGOMERY HIGH’S TEAM SYNERGY MOON PHARAOHS FEATURED ON KUSI Recently, KUSI’s Dave Stall invited Chula Vista Middle School School teacher Maria Catalina, Team Leader for Synergy Moon, and a few team members to talk about plans to send a rover to the moon. The rover will travel 500 feet, and then transmit at least one picture back to Earth. The competition goal date is December 31, 2015. Team Synergy Moon is the only team that has middle school, high school, and college students who are building the hardware! Click on this Youtube video link and look at a prototype of one rover built by Montgomery High School students on FIRST Robotics Competition Team 4616 - Pharaohs (under the mentorship of Coach Bernardo Escobedo). Led by Maria Catalina, Team Synergy Moon’s vision is to put San Diego on the educational map of America as a model of how educational leaders work collaboratively and effectively with civic leaders, elected officials,

business leaders, corporate leaders, community groups, the media and families. Her mission is to motivate, encourage, and inspire youth to pursue education and careers in the fields of science, technology, reading, engineering, art, math, and social sciences (STREAMS). The STREAMS approach enables students to develop the skill sets and knowledge base so that they can become innovators and contributing members in our local and global community.

IIPP MONTHLY SAFETY TIP OCTOBER 2013 One of the best resources for natural disaster preparedness is the website www.readysandiego.org. It contains tools that we all need to plan, prepare for and respond in the event of an emergency. Some important elements of a preparedness plan include: signing up for cell phone alerts, making a family plan and assembling an emergency kit (for your home, car and workplace). On the Ready San Diego website you can register for AlertSanDiego for cell phone and e-mail alerts to a disaster. Those who are visually or hearing impaired can also sign up for alerts in AccessibleAlertSanDiego, which offers alerts to smart phones, computers and wireless Braille Readers in American Sign Language with English voice and text. One important factor to keep in mind when preparing for disasters is the fact that your family may be in separate locations when a disaster strikes. It is important to plan in advance how you will contact one another and how you will get back together. The County of San Diego Office of Emergency Services has created the SD Emergency App that you can download from the App Store or Google Play. This is a wonderful resource containing checklists to help you create your emergency family plan, build an emergency supply kit and keep you informed with updates and shelter locations.
SWEETWATER HIGH SCHOOL BEAUTIFICATION You may have noticed that there is a brand new field turf and all-weather track at Sweetwater High School. The new field is a result of a partnership between the Local Initiatives Support Coalition; the NFL and San Diego Chargers; the City of National City; and the Sweetwater Union High School District. Now, thanks to an impressive community effort, the field’s surroundings have gotten an upgrade too. SUHSD Superintendent Dr. Edward Brand and Chief Facilities Executive Tom Calhoun collaborated with Mayor Morrison of National City to have community volunteers come out and take part in the beautification of the new field at Sweetwater High School. Jonathan Magers, Sweetwater’s Paintshop Supervisor, was instrumental in coordinating the volunteers to complete projects. The beautification included touch-up painting of their football bleacher’s backside pillars, stair wells and ticket booths. In all, they had over 20 people from the U.S. Navy take part in the event.

Some of the recommended items to include in a basic emergency supply kit are: • Water (one gallon per person per day) for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation • Food, at least a three day supply of nonperishable food • Medications, if needed • Radio, battery powered (with extra batteries) or hand crank • Flashlight (with extra batteries) • First Aid kit
• Important documents (copies of insurance policies, bank account records, etc.) in a safe container • Cash and change • Sleeping bags • Household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper (can be used as a disinfectant when diluted nine parts water to one part bleach). It can also be used to treat water by using 16 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water. • Matches in a waterproof container
• Whistle, to signal for help
• Mess kits, paper cups, plates, plastic utensils, paper towels
• Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air
• Blankets
• Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
• Change of clothes, sturdy shoes (in the event of shattered glass)
• Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)
• Books, games, puzzles for children

Sweetwater High Students Sweetwater High School students Hanna Tolfo, Abril Valencia, Yoanne Crisostomo,
Guadalupe Perez and Roberto Ortiz (who graduated from SUHI in June of this year) have received the 2013 Emerging Health Leaders Award for High School Students. This is a statewide award given by the California Center for Public Health Advocacy, which is one of the most prestigious public health organizations in California. The students were nominated for this award because of their leadership in improving access to resources that improve student health in National City. Kudos!

Vernon Von Sydow - Palomar High Teacher Kudos to retired Palomar High Teacher Vernon Von Sydow! AARP’s Educator Community has awarded him with the 2013 With Our Youth! Excellence Award. Von Sydow established the Palomar Scholarship Foundation to fund the educational needs of low-income students, he tutors at-risk students in mathematics, and established an internship program for teens to learn career skills and build relationships with mentors at a local U.S. Navy base.

SUPERINTENDENT’S COLUMN EXCELLENCE ALWAYS WINS First, I’d like to welcome you all back from the Fall Break! I hope that everyone took an opportunity to enjoy the time and find renewed energy in the work that we do on behalf of students in the Sweetwater School District. Year after year, our district continues to be recognized on every level. As I mentioned to all staff in an email last month, the Castle Park Community shined in September. With over 1,000 participants, the Education Summit at castle park High was among the best in recent history. Castle Park Middle was honored with a visit from US Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan. Duncan noted, “I never finish a bus tour without being reminded of the ingenuity and commitment and passion of our teachers and students for an education.” (http://www.ed.gov/blog/2013/09/ending-on-a-high-note/) Most recently, we were honored once again to have a Sweetwater District teacher, David Cobian, honored as being one of the top ten teachers in San Diego County. David, who teaches at Sweetwater High School was recognized, along with five other Sweetwater District teachers by the San Diego County Office of Education and Cox Communications at their annual Salute to Teachers event. As a district, we will continue to move forward and do what is right for the benefit of our students. We know that excellence always wins. When we go that extra mile for someone else, it gets rewarded. It’s the extra time with a student or a colleague, the extra effort to ensure we are doing the best we possibly can do – these are the times that make us stand above the rest. As we celebrate our accomplishments throughout the year, let’s also recognize the hard work it takes to get there. I know that we will continue to do what is right and do all that we can do because excellence always wins. November
