UNCOMMON COMMITMENT

TO A SUCCESSFUL

COMMON CORE TRANSITION We know our children go to school every day. We know their teachers have lessons planned for them. But we don’t often get to see what goes on behind the scenes to make that daily classroom experience the quality one that Sweetwater is committed to. It’s no secret that one of the biggest contributors to your students’ success is having well-trained, well-informed teachers. But learning is changing. As our state and nation move towards a whole new set of standards, known as The Common Core, Our district has been moving forward with planning and providing top-notch professional development for our teachers. This year, they have taken the form of “cohorts.”

Maria Castilleja, SUHSD Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction, heads a team of curriculum specialists for English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Science. These instructional leaders are Sweetwater teachers, hailing from campuses such as San Ysidro High, Mar Vista High, Chula Vista High, and Hilltop High. www.sweetwaterschools.org

They work in conjunction with a larger body of teachers, known as the District-Wide Academic Support Team (DWAST) as well as other accomplished and committed teachers from various schools. The goal? To do everything possible to make sure all Sweetwater students are poised for 21st Century success. “Our work centers on three guiding questions,” says Castilleja. “These questions explore how the role of the teacher is changing with the Common Core along with how subject-matter content is embedded in a global context.” Why? Because it’s what the 21st Century learner needs in order to be successful after high-school. Many of the jobs and careers our students will have in the future simply do not exist yet. “Our students have to be ready, and that begins with the teacher.” When teachers convene they are reading research, analyzing best practices, and actually taking assessments we are planning to give to students. They are also delving into the work of what it feels like to be a learner in today’s world, exploring deeper conceptual understandings related to themes like the nature of influence and power, the role of critical thinking across subjects, and the impact of applying learned concepts to new situations.

UNCOMMON PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

In short, teachers are getting a chance to be the students and experience problem-based explorations just as their students would. “We are doing it this way so that teachers really get a feel for what lesson design needs to become in the 21st Century,” says Katrine Czakowski, Curriculum Resource Specialist.

The Common Core standards are based heavily on what is known as the P21 Framework. It is a framework for 21st century skills that our graduates need to have mastered if they are going to be successful in the age of communication. They are grouped into these categories: Learning and Innovation, Life and Career Skills, and Information, Media and Technology Skills. Each of these skill sets are embedded in 21st century subject matter themes like Global Awareness and Civic Literacy, among others.

HOW IT WORKS

21ST CENTURY SKILLS

Each core subject (Math, English, Science and History/Social Science) has a districtwide cohort for every course; a “trainer-of-trainers” model. For example, the English 9 cohort is made up of two lead teachers, an English learner representative, and a Special Education teacher from every Sweetwater school. Principals also have the flexibility to include more teachers if they choose to do so. Cohorts encompass all core subject courses, from Math 7 to Calculus, from General Science to Physics, etc. At this point, all cohorts have met with approximately 800 teachers attending and representing their schools district-wide. Each cohort will reconvene three more times throughout the school year to continue this critical Common Core work. This is only the beginning; legislation is being passed as we speak about how 21st Century skills and Common Core standards will be assessed. You might be surprised to learn that the new assessments will be administered to each and every student across the nation on computers. The work of SUHSD instructional leaders like Maria Castilleja and her team of expert teachers are keeping our students ahead of the rest. Once again, Sweetwater is ready for success.

SWEETWATER SUMMIT & STUDENT EXPO AT CASTLE PARK HIGH SCHOOL What better way to kick off our Sunrise, Sundowns, and Saturdays series, than to celebrate the 1,000 community members, staff and students that participated in the 2013 Sweetwater Education Summit and Student Expo. At the Expo, every school highlighted programs such as Mariachi, student iPad “Techies” and “Geniuses,” as well as academies like San Ysidro High’s Medical Pathways Program, Mar Vista High’s Maritime Academy, and Southwest High’s Culinary Arts Academy. Sweetwater students led observers through robotics demonstrations, chemistry lab experiments, and explanations of the world’s current water issues while listening to a Chula Vista Middle’s student orchestra and tasting samples of delectable culinary treats. The Summit began with the presentation of the colors by San Ysidro High’s Color Guard and continued with Dr. Edward Brand, Superintendent of Sweetwater Schools, who spoke about the rapidlychanging educational landscape of the 21st Century. Dr. Brand emphasized Sweetwater’s ongoing efforts to set the pace for other districts to follow. “You cannot be mediocre in 2033 and have the ability to have a successful life,” Brand said. “We’re poised to be ahead of the curve so your child will be successful in 2033.” Tom Calhoun, Sweetwater’s first Chief Facilities Executive, echoed Brand’s sentiments by saying that continuous improvement and academic achievement require an ongoing commitment to school safety and security. Calhoun works with a team called the Security Working Group, which is made up of 16 people from various Sweetwater campuses. “We’re upgrading our security, which includes alarms, cameras and video surveillance,” Calhoun said. “We’re here to enhance the environment and climate of students while they’re on campus so they can learn.” Local celebrities, the Eastlake Little League Baseball Team stopped by to be recognized; the boys had quite the paparazzi following them around for photos. Nine members of the team are Sweetwater students from both Eastlake Middle and Rancho Del Rey Middle Schools. The media took note of what our community is up to as well. Read more about the 2013 Sweetwater Education Summit and Student Expo in this article featured in the U-T San Diego. Congratulations to everyone on another successful Sweetwater event! Special thanks to the students and staff at Castle Park High School for hosting the Summit on their beautiful campus.

Rancho Del Rey Celebrates Little Leaguer Charly Peterson

What a day for a young man in middle school! Charly Peterson, 8th grader at Rancho Del Rey Middle School, donned his Eastlake Little League Uniform last week while his school celebrated his achievements as part of the team that went to the Little League World Series. The school displayed posters and held a special assembly in his honor, where they recognized his talents and hard work. They continued the festivities with a hilarious pie-eating contest and other fun events.

PAY IT FORWARD The Greater San Diego Council of Teachers of English (GSDCTE) is sponsoring a creative writing competition that gives students the opportunity to express their creativity and develop their writing skills. The finalists are recognized in an awards ceremony held at the San Diego County Office of Education. “I want to ensure we receive as many entries as possible from other Sweetwater schools,” says Steve Rodriguez, Olympian High School English teacher and coordinator of the Greater GSDCTE student writing competition. The GSDCTE is a local chapter of the California Association of Teachers of English (CATE). They are currently accepting student entries for the contest and the deadline is November 1. Students submit entries to their English teachers and the teacher submits it to CATE. For more information see the flyer or go to CATE’s website. MONTGOMERY MIDDLE DEFENDS THE FREEDOM TO READ

Can you imagine a world without books like Of Mice and Men, The Catcher in the Rye, and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn? Banned Books Week, coordinated by Montgomery Middle School librarian Imelda Alvarez, encourages students to exercise their first amendment freedoms to support access to banned books. Alvarez promoted Banned Books Week through posters, announcements, bookmarks, and pins. “Students were very curious and excited to read books that had been challenged” says Alvarez. The campaign also served as a lesson in social studies as students became more aware of their first amendment freedoms of speech and choice. Banned Books Week is an annual celebration of the freedom to read. It highlights the value of free and open access to information as well as the freedom to seek and express ideas, even those that some consider unorthodox or unpopular. Every year since 1982, the American Library Association (ALA) has compiled a list of the top 10 most frequently challenged books. Others titles that have been on the lists- which may surprise you- are books that are very popular among students at our own school libraries: The Twilight Series, The Harry Potter Series, The Hunger Games Trilogy, The Captain Underpants Series, TTYL, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Thirteen Reasons Why, and A Child Called It, to name a few. You can find out more about banned books at http://www.ala.org/bbooks/ or see Alvarez’s library webpage at http://momlibrary.yolasite.com. www.sweetwaterschools.org

CAREER-READY STUDENTS AT SWEETWATER HIGH Over the last couple of months Sweetwater High School’s Welding Academy students have been meeting with industry partners like Marine Group Boat Works (MGBW) and the Navy Internship Program located at the Naval Station San Diego. Students completed a resume, received interview techniques and were interviewed by industry partners and staff for the twoweek internship program. The selected students from the Sweetwater Career Technical Education (CTE) Welding Academy were given an opportunity to work alongside welders, craftsmen, machinists and engineers from the industry. It didn’t come as a surprise that the industry partners were pleased and impressed with what they saw from our Sweetwater students. Career Technical Education (CTE)/California Partnership Academies (CPA) is a program of study that involves a multiyear sequence of courses that integrates core academic knowledge with technical and occupational knowledge to provide students with a pathway to postsecondary education and careers. For more information contact Guillermo Fajardo, Career Technical Education (CTE) Welding Academy Instructor at Sweetwater High School.

r e n E COR ASSEMBLY BILL 484 The Governor is currently considering AB 484, which radically changes our state assessment program starting this school year (2013-2014). This means that we as a district must focus our efforts in the implementation of the Common Core State Standards. Tom Torlakson, State Superintendent of Education, is calling to use funds to allow most schools in California to field test the Smarter Balanced Consortium Assessment (SBAC) in the spring.

AB 484 calls for the following: 1) CAPA grades 2-11 will be administered in the Spring 2) Smarter Balanced Consortium Assessment in ELA and Math grades 3-8 and 11 will be administered (the breadth of school sites still to be determined) 3) CST Science assessments in grades 5,8 and 10 will be administered in the Spring (these are the life science tests required by the federal accountability system) 4) Grade 11 SBAC assessment will be used for EAP (the details on this one are still being developed.) Most of the STAR assessments will be suspended once our Governor signs the bill; there will be NO CST social science, ELA, Math, Science (except for 5-8-10 life science test). CAHSEE will still be administered at the high schools.

iPAD PARENT NIGHT AT HILLTOP HIGH Hilltop Middle School kicked-off its second year of iPad parent trainings on Tuesday, August 27, 2013. Close to 100 parents and family members filled the Hilltop Middle School cafeteria to learn about a variety of topics including iPad policies and procedures, parental tips for the iPads, and where students can find help with the iPads on campus. The Hilltop Middle School Genius Bar student representatives attended the training to assist parents during the presentation. These events are planned and hosted by Assistant Principal Manuel Narvaza and Teacher-Librarian Erin Southam. Teachers at Hilltop Middle will take part in upcoming parent trainings to show parents how students are using iPads in the classroom and how to navigate frequently used apps and programs such as Canvas LMS, Notability, and Jupiter Grades. The next parent training at Hilltop Middle School is planned for Tuesday, November 12, 2013.

HERMANITAS Four dedicated young ladies from Sweetwater High were awarded an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C. along with four community leaders and twelve other high school young ladies through the mentorship program Hermanitas from MANA de San Diego. Students Kareli Mendez, Maria Mendez, Darcie Vargas, and Vanessa Vargas demonstrated exceptional leadership and cooperation skills while participating in Hermanitas, the year-long mentorship program that is Spanish for “little sister.” This was a great opportunity for the Hermanitas to learn the possibilities of a higher education outside of home, and gain the experience of what it feels like to be away from home. Sightseeing included visiting the White House, touring the Capitol, Library of Congress, and walking through the National Mall. They were able to see the National Monument, war memorials, and the famous Lincoln Memorial, as well as visit the Smithsonian Natural History Museum. “I'd like to thank all of our sponsors who made this trip possible,” said Hermanitas mentee Darcie Vargas, who is also Sweetwater High’s ASB President. “Opportunities like these that have helped me grow and continue to learn about myself and the endless possibilities for my future.”

SMART CONFERENCE FOR ALL SWEETWATER SCIENCE & MATH TEACHERS Teachers of Science and Mathematics are invited to the 14th Annual Science, Math, Articulation, Resource, Technology (SMART) Conference scheduled for Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Southwestern College (SWC) from 8:00am - 1:00pm. This is a free conference which begins with a wonderful full breakfast. The purpose of the SMART Conference is to share instructional practices, open the lines of communication between faculty of the Sweetwater Union High School District (SUHSD) and SWC, and to provide an opportunity to discuss common issues that we face as instructors of mathematics and science. This is especially important since we serve the same students. Since the Next Generation Science Standards have just been approved, and Common Core has already begun to impact mathematics instruction, this year is particularly critical. In keeping with longstanding Sweetwater District practice, 4 hours of HURDLE credit towards salary advancement will be offered for participation. As in years past, this year the conference format will include approximately 10 to 12 presentations in math and science, a keynote speaker, and the opportunity for collegial discussions between SUHSD and SWC math and science faculty. For more information contact Steve Rodecker, Sweetwater Science Curriculum Specialist.
