Ashtabula County Fair returns Aug. 7-12 BY STEFANIE WESSELL Gazette Newspapers JEFFERSON - Visitors to the Ashtabula County Fair will get a peek at country life, as well as experience a variety of fun activities, when the fair returns to Jefferson on Aug. 7-12. The fair can be a memorable experience for any family because there’s a little something for everyone: the fair food (since it’s only once a year, it’s perfectly okay to indulge in cotton candy, elephant ears and fair fries!), the demolition derby and truck shows, the appearance by national country stars Jake Owen on Friday, the many exhibits of quilts, photos, drawings and other locally created and grown items, the concerts, the games, the horse races and the rides (many fairs make visitors purchase individual tickets for the rides, but at the Ashtabula County Fair, visitors receive unlimited rides with their admission). Of course, the main draw will always have to be the animals. There’s something incredibly joyful about watching a child see a pig or cow up close, for the very first time. Since these animals have been lovingly cared for by a 4-H’er, many

4-H’ers will allow the children to pet the animals and let mom or dad take a picture, which they will look at many years from now and say, “Remember when...” The Ashtabula County Fair is one of the only fairs to reward the 4-H’er, not just the animal. While many fairs only judge the quality of the animals, the

Ashtabula County Fair, when awarding the top prizes, favors evaluating what the 4-H’ers have learned from their project, including knowledge found in a book, like parts of the animal, what to do when they suspect an animal is sick, how to house the animal and so forth, and more hands-on knowledge, such

as how well the 4-H’ers can show their animal in a ring. Because of this aspect, 4H is one of the most fun and educational youth organizations. Youth meet new friends, and they learn dedication and responsibility, especially when their project involves raising a living, breathing animal. They take pride and ownership in a va-

riety of projects, including raising animals, sewing their own clothes, growing their own garden, building rocket launchers and learning archery. There’s a project for just about any interest imaginable (contact the Ohio State University Extension Office in Jefferson for more information). But besides the animals,

there’s plenty of other things to do at the Ashtabula County. Motocross rumbles through the Grandstands on Tuesday, with the Lucas Oil Pro-Pulling Series amazing spectators on Wednesday. The annual Demolition Derby returns Thursday and Saturday. There will be plenty of rides and games on the midway through Lisko Entertainment, and children also will have plenty of contests to participate in on Kids’ Day. Kids’ Day is on Wednesday, and children 14 years old and under are admitted free to the fair on this day. Performances by the Elephant Encounter, Granpa Cratchet Show and Bobby Hunt the “Circus Boy” will be held daily. Swifty the Clown will be strolling the midway throughout the week. So come to the Ashtabula County Fair for a fun time, and let the 4-H’ers know that their hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed (you might even bid on a local, farmraised animal during the livestock auction, held 1 p.m. Saturday at the MAC Arena)! For a full schedule and more details, see inside this special section dedicated to the Ashtabula County Fair.

Keeping up with the fair While many events have been planned for months, some are still being finalized. Emergencies also might crop up that necessitate some changes. To keep up with the latest on fair news, upcoming events and details on what has happened so far, pick up the Fair Dailies each day at each gate. The Fair Dailies, marked for each day of the fair, will include an updated schedule and any news updates about events, location changes or other things visitors to the Ashtabula County Fairgrounds need to know.

For events that change after the Fair Dailies are published, updates will be made throughout the day via the public address system on the fairgrounds. Fair visitors can also check in with the Ashtabula County Fair office, which is located in the front of the Grandstand by the Midway. The fair office hours vary, so check the schedule before visiting it. For more information about the fair, phone (440) 5760557.

North Poplar closed to through traffic during Ashtabula County Fair Week BY STEFANIE WESSELL Gazette Newspapers JEFFERSON - To avoid traffic congestion around the Ashtabula County Fairgrounds, North Poplar Street will be closed in Jefferson during fair week, as usual. The affected stretch of North Poplar Street runs between West Jefferson Street and Route 307, in the northern sector of the village. Unless they’re heading to the fair, cars, trucks and trailers approaching the fairgrounds will want to avoid this street from Aug. 7-12. Additionally, other local streets may be closed at various points during the week of Aug. 7-12. This will be to accommodate certain events that will be happening on

the fairgrounds. Local traffic around the fairgrounds may be restricted during the following events: •Aug.7 - The traditional 4-H youth parade is a fair tradition, with units marching into the grandstand area of the fairgrounds from Jefferson Area Junior/Senior High School. The traditional departure time for the parade is at 5:30 p.m. Expect safety forces to be working traffic control during and immediately before and after Tuesday night’s parade. Occasionally, North Elm Street also may be temporarily closed to through traffic due to heavy congestion. Other roads, such as Walnut Street, may be difficult to get down, especially in the evenings when the track gate is open to parking traffic.

Cratchet teaches old-fashioned lesson via ‘Home Destruction’ BY MARTHA SOROHAN Gazette Newspapers JEFFERSON – A popular family show that gives Ashtabula County fairgoers a 30-minute opportunity to rest their feet is popular with kids and parents alike. Billed as a “puppet show,” Granpa Cratchet uses a Muppet-like one-man “old coot” puppet who uses kid-friendly antics to teach lessons of safety first. Again this year, Crachet will drum up audiences for his three daily shows in the back midway by driving around the fairgrounds. Every year, Cratchet appears

in a different kid-sized vehicle, and this year he will wave to the crowds in his “Granpa’s Home Repair” truck, which advertises his “home destruction” company. Pedestrians must be careful, because Cratchet is not a good driver. At his three daily shows on the back midway, facing an audience seated on bleachers, Cratchet’s Muppet-like character uses a few props on a small puppet-theater-like stage to drive home his message. This year’s “Home Destruction” “puppet-mobile” vehicle, boasting “cheap de-

struction for less,” will attract kids to his shows, where they will learn the important lesson of following instructions. Fair-goers should be forewarned that Crachet goes for the “gross” factor, loving it when kids in the audience shout out, “Granpa! That’s gross!” as one youngster did one year when the old coot attempted to mix up turkey gravy and catchup while making popcorn in a unique jet rocket popcorn popper that blew up in his face. Cratchet always has time at the end of his show to autograph his sales memorabilia. The memorabilia reminds children of the importance of following instructions and doing things correctly — or mayhem could result. And as always, Granpa mixes his peddling of goods with the giving away of hugs, and there is usually no shortage of kids, even adolescent boys, willing to hug Gramps at the end of the show. Check the fair schedule PHOTO BY MARTHA SOROHAN for the times of the lovable When not performing one of his 30-minute shows at the Ashtabula County Fair, Granpa and crotchety Cratchet’s Cratchet drives around in his “puppet mobile” to reel in audiences. The theme of daily shows. Cratchet’s 2012 shows is the importance of following instructions.

Fair is affordable entertainment for families BY STEFANIE WESSELL Gazette Newspapers JEFFERSON - For families looking for affordable entertainment in the summer, they have to look no further than the Ashtabula County Fair. For six days in August, the Ashtabula County Fair offers access to rides, entertainment, games, horse races, livestock shows and more, all for a general admission price of $7. The general admission price includes a wristband for free rides, something most fairs don’t offer, as typically they require guests to purchase extra tickets for the rides. But at the Ashtabula County Fair, with the wristband, adults and children can ride unlimited rides during that day, excluding the live ponies. Children four years old and under are admitted to the fair free every day, but rides are not included. A ride wristband will cost $4 each

Elephant Encounter: Up close and personal

FILE PHOTO

BY MARTHA SOROHAN Gazette Newspapers JEFFERSON - Elephants are among the most popular of wild animals. The tall, lumbering beasts have been a boon to human labor and are fascinating to watch. This year, Ashtabula County fairgoers will have a chance to see two ponderous pachyderms up close and learn more about them at “Elephant Encounter.” Two female elephants, Cora and Shannon, will perform at two free outside shows daily by the Floral Building at the Fairgrounds. Considered pets by owners/trainers Bill and Cindy Morris, of Gibsonton, Fla., each elephant will show her unique personality as she obediently performs in the ring or on special stands. The elephants’ headdresses, with the initials “C” or “S” add color to the show. The Morris family uses “Elephant Encounter” to do more than entertain.

Emcee Bill Morris is a lifelong elephant lover who even as a child preferred the animals to typical boy toys such as trucks and footballs. He started “Elephant Encounter” to educate the public and to teach audiences the difference between Cora, a 50-year-old Asian elephant, and Shannon, a 25-year-old African elephant. The Morrises offer the program to prove that their creatures are neither circus nor zoo elephants, but family pets which have been cared for by the Morris family for almost their whole lives. A post on Morris’ web site states that when they go on vacation, family members can’t wait to return to the elephants. No leg chains or wires are used on the elephants during the show. The Morrises convey commands through authoritarian voices, showing not only the animals’ versatility, but their capacity to respond to human affection. “Elephant Encounter” of-

JEFFERSON - Start practicing those free throws now. The basketball freethrow contest returns to the Ashtabula County Fair this year for all school-aged children. The contest will begin 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, with the location to be announced that day (listen to announcements on the fair grounds’ public address system or drop by the fair office for details). The contest will be divided into 10 classes, boys and girls, broken into five grade groups: third and fourth grade; fifth and sixth grade; seventh and eighth grade; ninth and tenth grade; and 11th and 12th grade. The contest is only open to Ashtabula County school students in their grade level as of the 20112012 school year. During the contest, each contestant will take 10 shots at the basket, which is at the regulation basket height and foul-

line d i s tance for all classes except third and fourth grade. The players making the most baskets in each class will win a basketball. Every player will be allowed three warm-up shots. They also will be required to shoot all regulation shots in a reasonable amount of time. The judges have the final decision on what is an unreasonable time. The judges also will not count a basket if the player crosses the foul line while in the process of shooting. In the case of a tie, sudden-death playoffs will take place. If a tie continues, players will each shoot another basket until the tie is broken.

Rides make the fair go round

SUBMITTED PHOTOS

BY MARTHA SOROHAN Gazette Newspapers JEFFERSON – Nothing lures people to a county fair like the sight of a Ferris wheel in motion. That ride and more will be available to fair-goers this year, courtesy of Lisko Amusements, which brings about 18 rides to the Ashtabula County Fair for the tenth year in a row. “For the festivals, we use about 12 to 14 rides, but at fairs, we bring more,” said Steve Lisko, owner of Lisko Family Midway Amusements, Inc. The Lowellville-based company also brings food and games to the fair. The business started as a fair food concessionaire in 1963. Seventeen years later, Lisko decided to add amusements. Lisko offers “typical” fair food, such as French fries, cotton candy, sausage and funnel cakes. Lisko is hard-pressed to name the most popular ride

at the Ashtabula County Fair, partly because the Fair is what he called a “pop” arrangement, or “pay one price.” “Tell me,” he said. “If you were a kid, and could ride every ride at the Fair, what ride wouldn’t you ride?” In other words, when every ride is open to them, kids ride them all, making it hard for Lisko to determine what ranks at the top of their list. But the “Sea-Ray,” the ride that gently swings customers higher and higher, is very popular. So is the Carousel. “All day, we’ll see kids get off a ride and get right back on,” Lisko said. “Kids always like the rides.” The food/ride/games business keeps the entire Lisko family busy on the fair and festival circuit all season. The best part of the circuit for Lisko is the people. “You meet a lot of great people out here,” he said. Lisko’s sons Tim and Ri-

chard are co-owners of the business, and their families are involved, too, making it a three-generation affair as they travel in campers from town to town. In July, they worked at the Lucas County and Carroll County Fairs. “About 90 percent of our business is in Ohio, and we have two or three spots this year in Pennsylvania,” Lisko said. Heat may have broken records this summer, but it has not harmed Lisko’s business. The dry weather has been an advantage. “Daytime play is nothing, anyway, and business always picks up in the evening, especially after 8 p.m., when it’s cooling down,” he said. “I’d say the rides are down a little but not enough to make a difference.” “But I will say that the weather last year at the Ashtabula County Fair was perfect,” he added. Ask Lisko what his own favorite ride is, however,

Rides by Lisko Amusements will highlight the midway at the Ashtabula County Fair. and he cannot say. “The ride I liked the best was a coaster at a park in Youngstown,” he said “My wife won’t let me ride them any more. She says I’m too old,” he said. Lisko Amusements will be open 1 to 5 and 6 to 11 p.m. Aug. 7 and 9; 1 to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to midnight Aug. 10 and 11; and 1 to 5 and 6 to 10 p.m. on Aug. 12, the last day of the fair. Rides on Aug. 7, 9, 10, 11 and 12 are included with the Fair admission. On “Kids’ Day” Wednesday, Aug. 8, kids under 14 are admitted to the fair free. To enjoy the rides, they must purchase an All-Day Ride Pass for $4. Ride hours on Aug. 8 only are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 to 11 p.m. Persons entering the fair with passes or special admission must purchase a $4 All-Day Ride Pass. Tickets for wristbands may not be transferred from child to adult.

Country-singer Jake Owen to perform at fair BY STEFANIE WESSELL Gazette Newspapers JEFFERSON - Countrysinger Jake Owen will perform at the Ashtabula County Fair this summer. Owen will perform 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, at the Ashtabula County Fairgrounds in Jefferson. General admission tickets to grandstand and track seating are $10, on a first-come, firstserved seating basis. (This ticket price does not include the $7 admission to the fairgrounds on the day of the show.) Tickets are available at the Secretary’s Office under the grandstand at the fairgrounds. Recording music professionally since 2006, Owen has SUBMITTED PHOTO recorded three studio albums. County-singer Jake Owen will perform at the Ashtabula His latest album, Barefoot Blue Jean Night, reached County Fair this year.

number one on the U.S. Country charts. Country-music stations across the nation also have been heavily playing his first single from that album, also titled “Barefoot Blue Jean Night.” The song reached number one on the U.S. Country charts and has been certified platinum. His second single from the album, “Alone with You,” also reached number one. A third single, “The One That Got Away,” can be heard on the radio now. Past singles recorded by Owen include “Yee Haw,” “Startin’ with Me,” “Something About a Woman,” “Don’t Think I Can’t Love You,” “Eight Second Ride” and “Tell Me.” Owen was raised in the coastal town of Vero Beach, Fla. He and his fraternal twin Jarrod grew up in the sand and surf. Both boys attended

Florida State. That’s where music became Jake Owen’s true focus. He suffered a severe shoulder injury while wake boarding. This ended his days on the university’s golf team. During his recuperation, his left arm was in a sling. Owen realized that even with his arm in a sling, he could hold a guitar so he started playing guitar and writing songs. After his recovery, Owen became a regular club entertainer. He quit college just shy of graduation to make his pilgrimage to Music City. Then he was catapulted into the country-music spotlight. In 2009, Owen was named the Top New Male Vocalist by the Academy of Country Music. Besides his appearance at the Ashtabula County Fair, Owen has been opening shows for Kenny Chesney and

Tim McGraw on the Brothers of the Sun Tour, which Entertainment Weekly calls “a monster stadium tour.” “I’m getting to hang out all summer long with guys I have so much respect for. It doesn’t get much better than this,” Owen said. With Owen performing on Friday night, the Market Animal Committee’s Livestock Sale has been moved to Saturday, Aug. 11. The Market Animal Sale, which is conducted by the Ashtabula County Senior Fair Board through the assistance of the Market Animal Committee, will still be held in the MAC Arena (pig barn) on the Ashtabula County Fairgrounds. Demolition Derby to be on Thursday and Saturday Thursday, Aug. 9, and Saturday, Aug. 11 BY BYRON C. WESSELL Gazette Newspapers JEFFERSON - The Ashtabula County fair will again feature two different days for the demolition derby. However, instead of the two nights being Thursday and Friday as usual, this year the demolition derby will be held on Thursday, Aug. 9, and Saturday, Aug. 11. The derby will start at 7:30 p.m. both nights and admission to the grandstand will be $4. The second night of the demolition derby is open to any driver. Drivers from around the region like the event because it is conveniently located and offers a driving challenge. Drivers come from as far away as eastern Pennsylvania and New York to compete for the prize money. One of the main rules for the event is that drivers are required to continue to make contact with other cars for as long as they are able and the last car able to run is the winner. All judges’ rulings are final and judges are in the pit area and sign-up area. One of the most important parts of the derby for drivers is to stay off the logs, because once they get a tire or two over it is nearly impossible to escape. The derby is composed of several individual heats and one feature with cash prizes going to the winner of each heat and a grand prize going to the winner of the feature. Fair board members caution that all drivers must be old enough to have a valid driver’s license. The Nation Wide Demolition Derby puts on between 75 to 100 demolition derbies from May through November in 18 different states. The Ashtabula County Fair usually sees between 50 to 100 drivers each night.

spotted walking up and down the midway of the 2012 Ashtabula County Fair, stopping upon request to create every imaginable shape and creature right before your eyes. Almost like Santa in “The Night Before Christmas,” Swifty gets straight to his work. With over 3,000 creations in his repertoire, Swifty is best known for creating colorful animals, flowers, and shapes. According to his web site, “If you can imagine it, Swifty can create it.” But most kids at the fair spot one of Swifty’s creations being carried, or even worn, by another fairgoer, and ask Swifty to make one just like it for them. Swifty’s alter ago is Allen Stray, of N o v e l t y. I n h i s clown get-up, he performs weekly at numerous Cleveland locations. He has been seen on Fox8 News, Mike Tr i v i s a n o ’s r a d i o show on WTAM, and featured on the SUBMITTED PHOTO country’s top bal-

loon magazine, “Balloon Magic.” Swifty credits his interest in balloons to a large drawer of balloons of all sizes belonging to his grandfather. The two began creating after doing what kids normally do with balloons - bouncing them around and sticking them to the wall thanks to the build-up of static electricity. Stray has been performing since he was in high school. At one time, he dabbled in magic, and learned juggling from a book, “Juggling for the Complete Klutz.” That sent him into a mime troupe for about five years, and it was during those years that he picked up balloon twisting. The rest is history. Swifty will be showing a mere fraction of his talents at the fairgrounds, however. Always thinking of something new to create with balloons, Swifty in 2004 created the first Balloon Manor Haunted House to raise money for a cancer center in Rochester, N.Y. He repeated the feat two years later, using 130,000 balloons and the aid of 65 volunteers. Then, in April, 2007, a 12-hour balloon creation

Auxiliary selling collector’s baskets BY STEFANIE WESSELL Gazette Newspapers JEFFERSON - Continuing a tradition, the Ashtabula C o u n t y Fairboard Auxiliary once again will sell collector ’s baskets as a way to remember the fair. The ninth collector’s basket offered by the Women’s

Auxiliary is a handcrafted “vegetable” basket. Each basket has a brass plate with “Ashtabula County Fair - Jefferson, Ohio 2012” engraved on it and an outline of the State of Ohio with a star in the corner denoting Ashtabula County. The basket also features a blue ribbon tack cover, wooden handle, blue and white “cottage” weave, plastic protector and a matching small, bluecheck cloth liner. The basket measures 12 inches by seven inches by three inches by 7.25 inches. Each basket is hand woven using hard maple and is 100-percent custom made in the USA. Like all of the Ashtabula County Fair baskets offered since 2004, this year ’s basket is made in Ohio by the American Traditions Basket Company, based in Canal Fulton. Located in historic Canal Fulton, American Traditions Basket Company has been producing handmade, heir-

loom-quality baskets for customers in all 50 states for over 18 years. The company specializes in customizing keepsake baskets for organizations, schools and fundraisers. That may be one reason why the Ashtabula County Fairboard Women’s Auxiliary has held on to the basket as a fundraiser for nearly a decade. The Women’s Auxiliary believes the baskets are a good way for people to remember their time spent at the fair. The versatile baskets, chosen specifically for the 2012 fair by the Women’s Auxiliary, are a collector’s item and cost a $45 donation. The baskets have been on sale at the secretary’s office beneath the grandstand at the A s h t a b u l a C o u n t y F a i rgrounds in Jefferson since July 10. People may visit the office to purchase the basket or call Betty Helfer at 2288414.

Money raised through the sale of the collector ’s baskets is used toward fairground improvements. The Ashtabula County Fairboard Auxiliary also is involved with the Bench Project. Wi t h t h i s p r o j e c t , t h e group’s goal is to enhance the A s h t a b u l a C o u n t y F a i rgrounds so it may be enjoyed by all visitors. The bench project is dedicated to providing benches to be placed throughout the fairgrounds for visitors’ convenience. For $125, businesses, organizations or families can purchase a bench and have one or two lines, up to 30 characters per line, engraved on the bench. The bench will then become a permanent fixture on the grounds. Forms for the Bench Project may be found inside the 2012 Ashtabula County Fair Book or by visiting the secretary’s office underneath the grandstand.

Loads of kids’ activities planned for annual Ashtabula County Fair days BY DORIS COOK Gazette Newspapers JEFFERSON - During this y e a r ’s annual Ashtabula County Fair, a full schedule of games and contests from watermelon eating to bubble gum blowing to water balloon toss plus more is planned, says Everett Helfer, fair board member. Helfer has been a Fair Board member for 17 years. “When I got on the board, I had a few jobs to handle including planning kids’ games. I really enjoy it still today. It’s a lot of fun for me,“ Helfer said. On Wednesday, Aug. 8, it’s Kids’ Day at the fair, with all kinds of contests and fun activities for youth to participate in. From 10 to 11 a.m. is a Kids’ Drawing Contest held at the Expo Center with the theme of “Fun at the Ashtabula County Fair.” It is open to boys and girls ages 4-10 years. Children can register at the Expo Center building. All drawings must be done on the spot after registration and supplies will be furnished. There are three age classes: ages 8-10, 6-7 and 4-5. Contestants must put their name, age, address and phone numbers on the back of their drawing to be

in the contest, said Helfer. Winners will be announced on Monday, Aug. 13, with prizes awarded at that time. Sponsor of the contest is Hardees in Jefferson. Digging for pennies in sawdust is another contest at 10 a.m. on Aug. 8 for kids ages 2-7 years. The kids are given four minutes to find a large pile of sawdust as many pennies they can find and the winner wins $5. The water balloon toss game is at noon on Aug. 8 at the MAC Arena with teams of two people to compete with others. It is sponsored by the Junior Fair Board. At the Bob Barnard Entertainment Center, Helfer said there will be a Bubble Gum Blowing contest to see who can make the biggest bubble. It is open for ages 2-9 and 1015 year-olds. It starts at 1 p.m. with cash prizes to the winners. Another great fun event is the juicy Watermelon Eating contest, which can get pretty messy, according to Helfer. This competition is held on Aug. 8 at 4 p.m. in front of the grandstand. It is open to youth and adults: ages 6-10-, 11-15, and 16 years up. Participants will race against each other for the fastest time to gobble up a slicc of melon with their

hands behind their backs. Timing is the key to eat quickly without losing the melon off a paper plate. Cash prizes are given winners in each age division. The frog jumping contest this year is held on Tuesday, Aug. 7, at 1 p.m. at the grandstand. Each person entering must bring their own frog, said Helfer. It is open to youth up to 18 years of age. The frogs will start from a designated starting circle, and total distances after three jumps determine the winner. Owners of the frog are allowed to nudge the creature to get them started. Another top contests for kids at the fair is the Bicycle Races held on Aug. 7 at 11 a.m. in the grandstand track area, Helfer said. There is a Best Decorated Bike Class in six different age categories with cash prizes to winners. The Bike Race contest is open to following ages: 3-5 years; 6-8 years; 9-11 years; 12-14 years; and 1518 years. There are different race yards for each age range. Registration for these two contests is from 10:14 to 10:45 a.m. FILE PHOTO

“Everyone looks forward to the tractor pulls,” Bob Spellman, chairman of the tractor pulls said. “We get a good crowd for them every year.” The hook fee for the morning classes is $10 and $25 for the afternoon classes. Northwest PA and Truck and Tractor Pullers Association,

Inc. present the tractor pull and semi-truck pull. The morning pulls have a purse of $400, while the afternoon purse grows to $700, $800 and $1,000 depending on the class. Those who participate in the tractor pull also receive free admission to the fair for the truck and two people.

“Pulling order of classes to be determined at time of weigh-in, so be on time,” Spellman said. The entry fee for the truck show is $12 with the money being donated to the Ashtabula County Special Olympics and $5 for the garden tractor show. During the semi-truck

show, come and see some of the best trucks in Ashtabula County and chat with the proud owners. A truck parade will be held at approximately 4:30 p.m. During the truck show, vote for the truck of your choice and help support Ashtabula County Special Olympics, which sponsors

the show along with Ashtabula County Truckers Helping Hands. Another crowd pleaser is the children’s tractor pull, which will be held 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 12, in the Expo Center. Marcy Equipment of Pierpont and Cope Farm Equipment of Austinburg Township sponsor the contest. The children who participate in the pull will pull with small John Deere bikes that are shaped like a tractor, and they try and pull weights that have been attached. “People really enjoy watching the kids on the small John Deeres,” Spellman said. Many people see a competitive side come out of the children as they try and pull their weights to the finish line. The classes are: girls, four years and under; boys, four years and under; boys, five years and under; girls, five years; girls, six years; and boys, six years. “The kids really get into it and it’s a lot of fun,” Spellman said. Spellman said the children get their own rally on the sidelines. “Parents and friends are always cheering the kids on,” Spellman said. “It’s something we enjoy every year.” Sadie Portman, reporter for the Gazette, may be reached at sportman@gazette news.com.

“Circus Boy” Bobby Hunt brings his comedy routine to the Fair three times daily at the Bob Barnard Entertainment Center. BY MARTHA SOROHAN Gazette Newspapers JEFFERSON – If the mental image of “Circus Boy” is a youth flying from trapeze-to-trapeze under a circus tent, think again when planning your day at the Ashtabula County Fair. Bobby Hunt bills himself as “Circus Boy,” but his free show at the Bob Barnard Entertainment Center is about comedy. Hunt comes from a long line of circus performers. Following in their footsteps, he performed as an acrobatic, stilt-walking clown with the Ringling Brothers Circus, where he learned to eat fire.

But he switched to comedy because, small in stature, he lacked the athletic prowess required for most circus acts. “I’m a goofball,” he told one reporter. “I tell jokes and have fun and I’m interactive. The focal point of my show is making people laugh and having fun.” Hunt keeps his audiences on the edge of their seats with balancing acts on tops of ladders, his “mouth-juggling” ping-pong ball trick, and his famous wheelie on a tiny bicycle that fits in the palm of his hand. Hunt says he loves talking to people because, in his business, he has low inhi-

bition levels. And he is not averse to taking risks in everyday life, though he knocks on wood that he has gone nearly 25 years without an injury. “I practiced harder than most human beings because I was driven. As a little guy, I wasn’t very good at many other sports,” he says on his web site. He calls his comedy routine “everybody’s cup of tea,” especially for families. “I have adult humor but it’s clean for grandma, the kids, everybody. It’s a family-friendly show,” he said in a web site interview.

• $5.00 will be awarded to the owner of the winning bird who breaks the Ashtabula County Fair Record of 130 crows established in year 2004.

James Mathews holds his record setting Rooster “General Lee” who broke all records in the county for crowing in a half hour’s time. General Lee let out 130 crows at the 2004 Ashtabula County Fair.

Dairy cows just some of the many animals at the Ashtabula County Fair BY STEFANIE WESSELL Gazette Newspapers JEFFERSON - Plenty of animals can be seen at the Ashtabula County Fair beginning Tuesday, Aug. 7, through Sunday, Aug. 12 Animals housed in barns on the fairgrounds in Jefferson range from chickens and rabbits, horses and llamas, pigs and cows and more. In preparation for showing their animals at the fair, 4-H’ers spend a lot of time taking care of their animals, studying their project books and working with their animals. Being in 4-H has opened up a lot of other fun opportunities for 4-H’ers, too. To get ready for this year ’s fair, 36 4-H members, accompanied by 15 adults, participated in the third annual Dairy Camp. This year the camp traveled by tour bus to Mechanicsburg, Ohio, to visit the John and Bonnie Ayars family. They farm about 1,000 acres and milk about 150 cows. They also make, market and sell ice cream made from the milk from their Guernsey cows. Bonnie Ayars, who also is a professor at The Ohio State University, then fol-

lowed the bus to the campus and gave the grand tour of the Ag Campus in Columbus. The last stop on the campus tour was the Ohio State Veterinarian College, where campers got to learn about vet school. Campers even got to view a surgery from the observation deck above the operating room. Naturally, no trip to Ohio State is complete without a stop at Ohio Stadium, where many of the campers had their first experience seeing the field where the Buckeye Football team plays their games! This wonderful day full of experiences was planned and set up by Camp Director Charity Mazzaro with help from the camp committee of Rosmarie Eldred and Seanna Butler and the other Dairy 4-H advisors. Due to wonderful sponsors of The Ashtabula County Holstein Club, Ashtabula County Farm Bureau, Farm Credit Services, Brewster & Brewster Company, COBA Select Sires, Ashtabula County Dairy 4-H Committee and the Struna and Mazzaro families, this entire trip was paid in full for the 4H members who attended.

JEFFERSON - The Ashtabula County Fair will return on Tuesday, Aug. 7, kicking off with the annual parade on opening day. The parade is set for 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 7. Any area youth organization wanting to get a float or march in the parade must register first. To sign up, persons and groups can call Seanna Butler at (440) 858-2100. They will then be given their spot number and where to assemble in Jefferson for the parade route through town to the fairgrounds. The parade is set for 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 7 at the grandstand area on the fairgrounds. Following the parade, the 2012 Ashtabula County Fair’s Royal Court will be announced, as friends and family watch from the grandstands. 2011 King Cody Fetters and Queen Courtney Fox have spent the past year representing Ashtabula County at different festivals and events. “I have been honored to represent the Ashtabula

County Fair as the king this past year,” Fetters said. Fetters has been an active member of the Kids and Cows 4-H Club for 10 years, taking dairy and dairy beef projects to the fair. His accomplishments continue beyond serving as fair king, as he is a three-year member of the Ashtabula County Junior Fair Board and current president. He graduated from Jefferson Area High School this pas spring. “I will be attending college this fall to pursue a degree in education,” Fetters said. Fox has been an active 4H Club member for nine years. She currently is in the All-American Animals 4-H Club. Throughout her time in 4-H, she has served on the junior fair board since 2009, attended 4-H Camp Whitewood as a camp counselor and volunteered as a counselor for 4-H Cloverbud Camp. 2012 Equine Royalty Queen named JEFFERSON - There are so many ways that kids connect with others in 4-H. They start by becoming friends with other kids who share the same interest as themselves. Some horse club kids go above and beyond in their quest for learning-by-doing and try the extracurricular equine activities that the Ashtabula County Saddle Horse Committee offers. The Committee is able to offer these extras because the Advisers go above and beyond to make these programs possible. The Committee recently had its first ever Equine Royalty contest to recognize and award the members who have worked to attain as much equine knowledge as possible during their 4-H years. Devon Hannan, 14, a member of Rhythm Riders, was crowned 2012 Equine Royalty Queen, after a subcommittee tallied the results of the contest. Devon has participated in Horse Bowl, Public Speaking, and Hip-

pology throughout her 4-H years. Julia Miller, 19, a member of Rhythm Riders, was Runner-up and has participated in Light Horse Judging, Hippology, and the Ohio State Fair. Anyone who knows anything at all about horses, knows there is a lot to know! From feeding to grooming to riding there is a wide range of things to learn in order to understand horses. Bernie Kranauer, President of Saddle Horse Committee and Head Advisor of Silver Stir-Ups, introduced the participants and spoke briefly of their 4-H accomplishments while Kelly Felicijan, Advisor with Rhythm Riders, explained how the contest worked. Casey Kozlowski, State Representative of the 99th Ohio House District, presented the winners with their ribbons. Winners of each of the four divisions of the contest were as follows: —Claire Dodrill, 17, from Silver Stir-Ups, took 1st

place with a 100-percent score on the Equine Royalty Application listing 4-H accomplishments and writing an essay. —Devon Hannan and Julia Miller tied with a 100percent score for their Equine Interview with a panel of three out-of-county judges. —Amanda Barnum, 15, Dusty Riders, received the highest score of 88 percent and was the only one to answer the bonus question correctly on the 50 multiple choice Equine Knowledge Test, which included questions submitted by Head Advisers from each horse club covering all riding classes, 4-H rules, county rules, judging, etc. —Karlee Gray, 16, Rhythm Riders, received the highest score of 96 percent, proving her riding skills in the Horsemanship class judged by the PAS state qualifying Judge in June. Other participants in the contest were Shelby Arnett,

18, from Tiny Trotters; Hannah Propst, 18, of Rhythm Riders; Chandler Candela, 14, with Silver Stir-Ups; and Camryn Zapp, 14, Harley Buckley, 16, Brittany Hennessy, 14, Breanna Irwin, 16, and Dani Zapp, 15, from Trail Blazers. Equine Royalty was an idea presented to the committee last fall by Jennifer Buckley, Advisor of Trail Blazers. The committee thought it was a great way to honor 4-H equine members with their own ceremony. The contest is open to Ashtabula County Saddle Horse club senior boys and girls who are enrolled in a 4-H equine project. Audrey Felicijan, Vice-President of Saddle Horse Committee and Head Advisor of Rhythm Riders was facilitator of the contest. JEFFERSON - Although animals might be the first thing people think of when they hear “Ashtabula County Fair,” there are many other projects to view during the week. Children, teens and adults alike compete in a variety of different projects, where they strive to take the best photo, sew the best dress or grow the finest vegetable. Most of these projects are displayed at the east end of the fairgrounds in Jefferson. In the Grange building, come view the best agriculture and horticulture offerings Ashtabula County has to offer, from the ripest tomatoes to the juiciest blackberries.

Other items on display in the Grange building are homemade honey, wine and maple syrup, culinary and canned goods, as well as needlework, arts and crafts. In past years, people could view such crafts as a large boat made from Legos that took up a good portion of the entire booth space. In the floral building, dozens of colorful flowers fill the room, from dahlias to snapdragons. In the Expo Building, come view the different booths decorated in honor of a variety of 4-H Clubs. This year, the booths will be judged. Also in the Expo Building are dozens of photographs capturing scenes in such categories as Ashtabula County Fair, bridges, people, animals, landscapes and more.

Draft horses show off natural beauty at the Ashtabula County Fair BY STEFANIE WESSELL Gazette Newspapers JEFFERSON - The thundering of hooves will fill the show rings at the Ashtabula County Fair on Tuesday through Saturday, as draft horses take the center ring in a stunning display of natural beauty and agility. Several breeds of the majestic draft horse, a large horse originally bred for hard, heavy tasks such as farm labor, are shown at the fair. The breeds, which share common traits of strength, patience and docile temperament,

can range from 16 to 19 hands high and from 1,400 to 2,000 pounds. Perhaps the most recognizable drafts horses are the Clydesdales, which were popularized by Budweiser beer commercials. A Clydesdale, usually bay (brown) or chestnut in color, is easily identifiably by the abundance of feather: the white, long hairs that fall from just below the knees and to cover the hooves. Similar in appearance to the Clydesdales is the Shire horse, which can be black, bay or gray in color. Shires, which are the tall-

est draft horses, also have white stockings and an abundance of feather. Another breed, the Belgians, a light-chestnut colored horse with a flaxen mane, can sometimes be spotted grazing farm fields or pulling a wagon full of people at different festivals in Ashtabula County. Also on display are the Percherons, which probably were used as battle mounts during the Middle Ages. Depending on the horse’s age, a Percheron can vary in color from b l a c k , s t e e l g ra y a n d dappled gray.

Spectators won’t have any difficulty telling the halflingers apart from the other horses: the chestnut-colored halflingers, which range in size from 13.2 to 15 hands high, are PHOTO BY STEFANIE WESSELL significantly smaller than Visitors to the Ashtabula County Fair will have many chances to admire the draft the other draft horses. horses, as shows are held Tuesday through Saturday. This year, draft horse shows will be held Tuesday through Saturday, in two different locations. On Tuesday, the draft driving competitions will be held beginning at 4 p.m. at the Saddle Horse Complex. On Wednesday, beginning at 9 a.m., the halter classes will be held in the show ring east of the Draft Horse Barn. During this show, the judge will be

evaluating the horses on their conformation. Conformation refers to the correctness of a horse’s bone structure, musculature, and its body proportions in relation to each other. The judge will select the best horse in each breed before choosing an overall supreme champion stallion, mare and gelding. A best in show will be chosen from the supreme champions. On 9 a.m. Thursday are the farm-team hitches and draft horse log pull. During this show, the exhibitors will maneuver the horses around a timed obstacle course during the farm-team hitch. This year, the draft

horse hitch shows will be held beginning at 4:30 p.m. Friday and 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the west Saddle Horse Complex. Exhibitors, which include men, women, youth and seniors, will hitch their horses up to wagons during these shows and maneuver around the ring. The classes range from a single-horse team up to a team of six horses pulling a wagon in synchronicity. During the hitch shows, the judge examines how the horses handle and if the horses listen to the commands, stay in uniform and work together. In recent years, Ashtabula County Fairboard member Everett Helfer has noted that more people are submitting their amateur wines for competition because of the rise of the grape industry in Ashtabula County. “There’s a lot of different varieties,” Helfer said. The wines will be displayed in the Grange Building, located near the Floral Building, Commercial

Building and FFA Building on the fairgrounds. There’s no public sampling of the wines, but the display is still worth a visit, as it might spark people’s interest to start growing their own grapes or making their own wines. People should visit the display to see how many people in the county are producing their own grapes, whether for their own interest or to sell to nearby win-

eries, Helfer said. “Grape production in the county has grown,” Helfer said. People interested in submitting their homemade wines must enter the contest by July 31. The classes in the amateur wine division include Labrusca, French hybrid types and Vinifera. Sweet, semi-sweet and dry wines can be entered in each category. Other classes in the

amateur wine division include wines made from ingredients other than grapes and ice wines. Premiums will be awarded for first, second and third place in the amount of $5, $4 and $3. The Best of Show winner will receive $10. For details about how to enter the contest, visit www. ashtabulafair.com or pick up a copy of the Ashtabula County Fair Book.

The gardening projects are judged on produce appearance, display attraction plus other criteria on Aug. 11 at 11 a.m. in the 4-H building,“ Hoyt said. Each of the gardening 4H’ers are also required to do an art poster as it relates to their specific vegetables or fruit grown for the judging portion. They can also sell their produce from 1 to 4 p.m. after the judging is over. Hoyt said there are a number of 4-H’ers enrolled in the gardening program this summer. The Ashtabula County fair ‘Honors Heroes Among Us’ this year BY STEFANIE WESSELL Gazette Newspapers JEFFERSON - Every year, the Ashtabula County Junior Fair Board chooses a theme for the fair. This year, the theme is “Honoring Heroes Among Us.” The theme is reflected in the botanical decorations throughout the fairgrounds, and in the parade floats on Tuesday of the fair. This y e a r, the Ashtabula County Fair celebrates its 166th fair. With that anniversary, Gazette Newspapers is publishing its 76th annual “fair edition.” In keeping with tradition, every year the Gazette publishes a special fair edition in honor of the Ashtabula County Fair. The annual fair edition is the largest and most widely read issue published each year. The issue is filled with the fair schedule, stories and photos on 4-H projects, details about entertainment at the fair and more. But even before the Gazette started printing a special edition dedicated to the fair, it still promoted the popular event. In a centennial edition of the Jefferson Gazette from 1936, an article details how the Ashtabula Agricultural Society first organized in 1823, with

t h e f i r s t f a i r h e l d i n The Gazette published several articles about the Ashtabula County Fair in its centennial edition of the paper on July 3, 1936. Austinburg. The society had to reorganize in 1842, as it found little encouragement from pioneer farmers in its early days. “Ashtabula county is believed to have held the first agricultural fair in Ohio at Austinburg in October, 1823,” the article from 1936 reads. “The original minute book of the Ashtabula Agricultural Society, organized at Jefferson on January 16, 1823, is among the historical documents owned by the editor of the Jefferson Gazette. The records of the pioneer agricultural society indicate that the movement found little support from the farmers of the county.” (Oh, how the times have changed!) The article goes on to share that the society was the first of its kind in the state and held five fairs before it disbanded. It reorganized as the Ashtabula County Agricultural Society in 1842 and has held fairs each year with few exceptions, although the 1936 fair was booked as the 90th annual event. Another article from the July 3, 1936, edition of the Gazette states that 1,300 boys and girls belonged to 4-H that year.

Remembering the Past

As the Ashtabula County Fair celebrates its 166th anniversary this year, take a look at these old photos that have been collected by the Ashtabula County Fair Board throughout the years. The photos show what the fairgrounds have looked like in the past. The Floral Building, also known as the octagon building, is shown in a scene from the 1900s. The building is still in use at the fairgrounds today.
