Ashtabula County Fair 2011
Before you go Ashtabula County Fair returns Aug. 9-14 BY STEFANIE WESSELL Gazette Newspapers
JEFFERSON - Visitors to the Ashtabula County Fair will get a peek at country life, as well as experience a variety of fun activities, when the fair returns to Jefferson on Aug. 9-14. The fair can be a memorable experience for any family because there’s a little something for everyone: the fair food (since it’s only once a year, it’s perfectly okay to indulge in cotton candy, elephant ears and fair fries!), the demolition derby and truck shows, the appearance by national country stars Josh Thompson and James Wesley on Saturday, the many exhibits of quilts, photos, drawings and other locally created and grown items, the concerts, the games, the horse races and the rides (many fairs make visitors purchase individual tickets for the rides, but at the Ashtabula County Fair, visitors receive unlimited rides with their admission). Of course, the main draw will always have to be the animals. There’s something incredibly joyful about watching a child see a pig or cow up close, for the very first time. Since these animals

have been lovingly cared for by a 4-H’er, many 4-H’ers will allow the children to pet the animals and let mom or dad take a picture, which they will look at many years from now and say, “Remember when...” The Ashtabula County Fair is one of the only fairs to reward the 4-H’er, not just the animal. While many fairs only judge the quality of the animals, the Ashtabula County Fair, when awarding the top prizes, favors evaluating what the 4-H’ers have learned from their project, including knowledge found in a book, like parts of the animal, what to do when they suspect an animal is sick, how to house the animal and so forth, and more hands-on knowledge, such as how well the

4-H’ers can show their animal in a ring. Because of this aspect, 4-H is one of the most fun and educational youth organizations. Youth meet new friends, and they learn dedication and responsibility, especially when their project involves raising a living, breathing animal. They take pride and ownership in a variety of projects, including raising animals, sewing their own clothes, growing their own garden, building rocket launchers and learning archer y. There’s a project for just about any interest imaginable (contact the Ohio State University Extension Office in Jefferson for more information). But besides the animals, there’s plenty of other things to do at the Ashtabula County. The Tonny
Petersen’s Hell Drivers will put on a show on Tuesday in the Grandstands. This event is a modern day, traveling stunt show spectacular. Motocross rumbles through the Grandstands on Wednesday, and the annual Demolition Derby returns Thursday and Friday. There will be plenty of rides and games on the midway through Lisko Entertainment, and children also will have plenty of contests to participate in on Kids’ Day. Kids’ Day is on Wednesday, and children 14 years old and under are admitted free to the fair on this day. Performances by the Elephant Encounter, Granpa Cratchet Show and juggler Mark Hayward will be held daily. Swifty the Clown will be strolling the midway throughout the week. So come to the Ashtabula County Fair for a fun time, and let the 4-Hers know that their hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed (you might even bid on a local, farm-raised animal during the livestock auction, held 3 p.m. Friday at the MAC Arena)! For a full schedule and more details, see inside this special section dedicated to the Ashtabula County Fair.

Keeping up with the fair While many events have been planned for months, some are still being finalized. Emergencies also might crop up that necessitate some changes. To keep up with the latest on fair news, upcoming events, and details on what has happened so far, pick up the Fair Dailies each day at each gate. The Fair Dailies, marked for each day of the fair, will include an updated schedule and any news updates about events, location changes or other things visitors to the Ashtabula County Fairgrounds need to know. For events that change after the Fair Dailies are published, updates will be made throughout the day via the public address system. Fair visitors can also check in with the Ashtabula County Fair office, which is located in the front of the Grandstand by the Midway. The fair office hours vary, so check the schedule before visiting it. For more information about the fair, phone (440) 576-0557.

Before you go Fair is af fordable enter tainment for families BY STEFANIE WESSELL Gazette Newspapers
JEFFERSON - For families looking for affordable entertainment in the summer, they have to look no further than the Ashtabula County Fair. For six days in August, the Ashtabula County Fair offers access to rides, entertainment, games, horse races, livestock shows and more, all for a general admission price of $7. The general admission price includes a wristband for free rides, something most fairs don’t offer, as typically they require guests to purchase tickets for the rides. But at the Ashtabula County Fair, with the wristband, adults and children can ride unlimited rides during that day, excluding the live ponies. Children four years old and under are admitted to the fair free every day, but rides are not included. A ride wristband will cost $4 each for those children.
The Ashtabula County Fair also offers special promotions throughout the week. From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Friday, senior citizens are welcome to enter the fairgrounds for only $1 per day. Like with children under four, the rides and grandstand wristband is not included in that price. On Wednesday, the fair hosts its annual Kids’ Day. On this day, children 14 and under are admitted free to the fairgrounds. To ride the rides, they can purchase an allday ride pass for $4. Lastly, the Ashtabula County Fair hosts a Veterans’ Appreciation Day on Thursday from 8 a.m. to closing. On this day, veterans who show discharge papers DD2-14 or a veterans’ organization membership card are admitted for only $1 to the fairgrounds. They may also purchase a wristband to access rides and the grandstand for $4.
A ride wristband will allow people to watch the grandstand shows for no extra cost on two of the days, including Hell Drivers on Tuesday and Motocross on Wednesday. No wristband is needed for the Tractor and Truck Pull on Sunday. But for the shows on Thursday through Saturday, guests must purchase a special ticket in addition to their admission. Entry to the Demolition Derby on Thursday and Friday will cost guests $4 each day, paid at the Grandstand. If people want to watch the concer t featuring Josh Thompson and James Wesley on Saturday, they must purchase tickets at $10 a piece. The tickets went on sale on July 12. Ride hours are 1-5 p.m. and 6-11 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 6-11 p.m. Wednesday; 1-5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday; and 1-5 p.m. and 6-10 p.m. on Sunday.

As a counter, good old fashioned home cooked food just like grandma or mom used to make is available on the fairgrounds. “These meals can be found at the Jefferson Grange (restaurant) along the midway. The Jefferson Grange also features breakfast in the morning,” Jones said. Walk along the line inside the Jefferson Grange restaurant on any given day of the fair, Aug. 9-14, and customers will see any number of wholesome, delicious foods. The Grange is wellknown for its mashed potatoes that literally melt in your mouth. The Plymouth Grange also prepares food for fair visitors. Both granges have good prices for their food. “Our concessionaires help to keep the prices down to make it a part of the family entertainment,” Jones said. Beverages are the perfect complement to fair food, and a variety is available up and down the midway and the restaurants, as well as the Holstein Club booth and seating area.

JEFFERSON - The typical county fair food fare is not something you would normally get at home, which is one reason that when people go to a weeklong event like the Ashtabula County Fair, they splurge a little bit because they may not do it again until the following year. And it is oh, so good! Food and beverage concessions at the Ashtabula County Fair line the midway of the fairgrounds. Imagine any kind of fair food or carnival-type food
and it will probably be somewhere. You just have to find it. Bob Jones, fair board member, said there will be, of course, the standard sausage sandwiches and prime rib sandwiches, favorites of the county fair visitor. Chicken and ribs dinners are also part of the fare. “ There are great gyros in pita bread there. People will find Mexican tacos. They’re good,” Jones said. Other selections include fried veggies, corn dogs and fudge, to name just a few. Seek, and ye shall find!

On the midway Crachet’s old-fashioned lessons dished out in new show By MARTHA SOROHAN Gazette Newspapers
JEFFERSON – A popular family show that gives Ashtabula County fairgoers a 30-minute opportunity to rest their feet is popular with kids and parents alike. Billed as a “puppet show,” Granpa Crachet’s show features a Muppet-like, one-man “old coot” who uses kid-friendly antics to teach lessons of safety first. Again this year, Crachet will drum up audiences for his three daily shows in the back midway by driving. He will exchange his tiny red f ire truck of pas t years, with “old coot.com” painted above the cab, for an old-time garbage truck. He will drive along the midway and stop to chat with kids through a window that is precisely kid-height.
But pedes trians are warned to be careful, because Cratchet is not a good driver. At the show, facing an audience seated on bleachers, the Muppet-like character uses a few props on a small stage to drive home his message. This year, an oldtime garbage truck will be featured at the center of his show. Giving new meaning to the term, “Trash in, Trash Out,” he will tell the audience that people in the U.S. produce enough trash annually to fill 63,000 garbage trucks, or that if laid end-to-end, all disposable diapers thrown out each year would equal the distance of seven trips to the moon — and smell bad, too. Some fair-goers should be forewarned that Crachet goes for the “gross”
factor, loving it when kids in the audience shout out, “Granpa! That’s gross!” as one youngster did when the old coot attempted to mix up turkey gravy and catchup while making popcorn in a unique jet rocket popcorn popper that blew up in Crachet’s face. This year, he will be autographing giant “Garbage In, Garbage Out” wall posters available at the end of the show. The back of PHOTO BY MARTHA SOROHAN the poster will be When not performing one of his 30-minute shows at the Ashtabula County f illed with garbage Fair, Granpa Crachet drives around to reel in audiences. In reality, Hayward had an ordinary childhood in Madison, Wisc., until being told chances were likely that he could grow up to be a baton twirler. Upset at the idea of a feminine profession, he was propelled to become a professional comedy juggler, yo-yo performer, and all-around funny guy. In high school, Hayward received a Hummingbird Hol-YoGram yo-yo in his stocking at Christmas. When a high school juggling club was formed, Hayward’s toy mastery blossomed. He joined a high school group, “The West High Jugglers.” While majoring in art
at college, he continued to perform. Soon after starting a graduate degree in Metalsmithing at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Hayward was offered money to do two yoyo shows. Answering his true calling, Hayward soon left school to become a professional juggler and yo-yo guy. This “yo-yo” guy,
who holds the 1995 Masters Division World Yo-Yo Championship, will bring his unique show to the Ashtabula County Fair, combining yo-yos with old favorites such as juggling clubs and torches. Daily entertainment Elephant Encounter: up close and personal by MARTHA SOROHAN Gazette Newspapers
JEFFERSON - Elephants are among the most popular of wild animals. Tall and lumbering, they have been a boon to human labor and fascinating to watch as well, delighting circus audiences and zoo visitors. This year, Ashtabula County fairgoers will have a chance to watch them perform and learn more about the ponderous pachyderms at the “Elephant Encounter.” Two elephants, Cora and Shannon, will perform at three free shows daily in a ring by the Floral Building at the Fairgrounds. Considered pets by owners/trainers Bill and Cindy Morris, of Gibsonton, Fla., the couple will show how each animal’s unique personality shines through as she obediently performs in the ring or on special stands. The elephants wear tiny headdresses, with the initial “C” or “S” to add color to the show. “Elephant Encounter” is more than entertainment. It is also educational, teaching audiences the difference between the African and Asian elephant. Cora is a 48-year-old Asian elephant weighing 9,000 pounds, while Shannon, a 24-yearold African elephant, tips the scales at 4,500 pounds. The Morrises offer the show to prove that

these creatures are neither circus nor zoo elephants. Instead, they are family elephants, akin to pets, which have been cared for by the Morris family for almost their whole lives. The Morris family has been dedicated to the study and care of the elephants for nearly three generations. They use no leg chains or wires on the elephants during the show but convey commands through authoritarian voices. They show the versatility of the animal and their capacity to respond to human affection. “Elephant Encounter” offers the opportunity to see wild animals at the fair, in contrast to the domesticated farm animals over at the other side of the fairgrounds. So take advantage of the opportunity to get off your feet, sit a while at the bleachers and

enjoy a circus-like show where trainers/owners display why they are so proud of their pets. My experience with the Morris’ furthered my education about elephants in captivity. I am very concerned about how elephants and all animals are treated. I have seen both bad and good treatment of elephants in captivity and in the wild. The Morrises are a good example of elephants in captivity receiving exceptional care. Their elephants are ambassadors for the education and support of elephants throughout the world. By reaching out to people around the country, they open doors for new supporters of elephants. These new supporters can further help save the elephants’ wild habitat, which is quickly diminishing, and further support better standards for care of captive elephants.

Motocross thrills return to Ashtabula County Fair BY BYRON C. WESSELL Gazette Newspapers
JEFFERSON – The thrill and excitement of motocross racing will be returning to the Ashtabula County Fair on Wednesday, Aug. 10. The event will start at 7 p.m. and is open to all riders. Last year, there were 17 different races. Some of last year’s f irst-place winners were Kenny Henr y, Kyle Ramey, Jesse Skvarek, Zach Mook and Jared Hitchcock. The motocross races are a great opportunity for local riders to show off their skills and talents to their friends and family. It is also a great time to get in some friendly competition riding in. “It’s just cool to go out there and show your friends what you can do, and put on a really good show for the crowd,” Jesse Skvarek said. Jesse has been racing at the fair for the past few years, along
with his father. Motocross is something the whole family can experience together, and most families make a picnic out of the event. A lot of friends and family will be cheering on their favorite riders from the pit as the rest of the crowd watches from the grandstands. “It’s a fun time for family and friends. It’s a fun sport and just something I enjoy doing,” Shawn Weaver has said on why he races. “I like the thrill of racing and competing to be number one,” Justin Cotterman said. Most riders consider themselves one big family and are always helping each other out at the track. Many riders will be found talking about their bikes and sharing different secrets of the trade to younger riders. A lot of riders like to show off their speed and ability to turn tight corners, while other riders like to We Deliver!

The bikes classes include: Jr. Pee Wee (Ages 5-6), Sr. Pee Wee (Ages 7-8), 60cc, 80cc, 125 Amateur, 250 Amateur and ProAm. The quads classes include: Junior Quads, 250 2-Stroke, 450 5Stroke, 200-300 Air Cooled, Woodsman and Pro-Am. The classes are subject to change depending on the number of participants. Entry fee for the majority of classes is $20 with trophies and plaques awarded. The Pro-Am fee is $35, with a 100-percent

Grandstand fun Harness racing premieres Thursday at county fair BY CRAIG L. HOFIUS Gazette Newspapers
JEFFERSON – A county fair without harness racing would be like a horse without one of its favorite treats, an apple. Harness racing is featured during two days of the 165th annual Ashtabula County Fair. Susan Stockwell, Ashtabula County Fair speed superintendent, said harness racing has been part of the fair here in Jefferson for untold generations of fair event participants. Stockwell said the horse pulls a cart and its rider, competing against several others in a race. “The horses used are only standard-
bred. They are strictly for harness racing. Rules from the United States Trotting Horse Association are used here at the fair. Harness racing is also governed by the Ohio State Racing Commission,” she said. Thirty-five to forty horses a day compete in races. Stockwell said the drivers will probably total 20. “We’ll know the drivers who are coming for the races when the fair begins on Tuesday (Aug. 9),” she said. Stockwell said they get a reasonable crowd in the stands each day of racing. “There is pari-mutual wagering on the horses. Wagering is done in the pari-mutual building next to
the racetrack. There are four windows to place a bet,” she said. Standard-bre d horses used in harness racing can begin racing when they are two years old. Stockwell said training for a two-year-old takes eight to 10 months. “When horses get older, training time is less. Standard-bred horses can race through the fourteenth year,” she said. There are classes in harness racing, which are based on age, sex and gait. There are trotters and pacers. Post time will be at 12 p.m. (noon) on both days, Thursday, Aug. 11, and Friday, Aug. 12. “Most races will be stake races. Horses
have to be Ohio-sired to race in stake races,” Stockwell said. She said information on each horse is in the program. It tells everything about the horse, such as who
owns it, how much money it has earned in its lifetime and past performance line. “It used to be the grand circuit here. Ashtabula County fairgrounds were on
this circuit back in the 1940s. They had the best horses and the top riders,” Stockwell noted. Fritz Tallcott, an owner/trainer at the fairgrounds, said the Ashtabula County Fair was a stop on the grand circuit. “Horses came by train and were transported to Jefferson. They walked down the main thoroughfare in town. The stands were packed. We had a full week of racing,” Tallcott said.

Grandstand fun Hell Drivers perform Tuesday night BY BYRON C. WESSELL Gazette Newspapers
JEFFERSON - Tonny Petersen’s Hell Drivers will be in action at the Ashtabula County Fair on Tuesday, Aug. 9. The show is set to start at 7 p.m., and the grandstands are expected to be packed. Tonny Petersen first started performing in the Jack Kochman Hell Drivers, but he now has a thrill show of his own. Petersen was also the stunt show coordinator for the Charlie Belknap’s Hollywood Show, and he also traveled with the Imperial Hell Drivers thrill show. Petersen is most famous for raising and
balancing his car on only two wheels and also for his highspeed reverse spin. The Hell Drivers thrill show includes precision driving of brand-new automobiles, high-speed reverse spins, deliberate crashes and tricky two-wheel driving. During the thrills show, the audience witnesses spectacular driving feats up close and personal in a family-friendly atmosphere. No Hollywood special effects or computer generated illusions are used in the live action stunts. Motorcycles are also part of the show as riders fly through a burning barricade of

fire. Marvel at the high flying dive bomber crash, performed direct from the movie lots of Hollywood! “ The Tonny Petersen’s Hell Drivers weaves an automotive artistry of daredevil driving and signature stunts featuring highflying, gravity-defying theatrical performances in this timeless production,” according to the Hell Driver’s website. Petersen has teamed up with Johnny Wisner, who is both a stunt driver and producer for Tonny Petersen’s Hell Drivers. The show offers high-speed driving and intentional car crashes that will leave the fans on the edge of their seats. Robert Kramer is the official voice of the Tony Petersen’s Hell Drivers. Kramer will keep the audience informed on what is going on during the thrill show and provide both detail and commentary. Justin Bellinger is also part of the act as Wrongway the Daredevil Clown. Bellinger, aka Wrongway, is often found communicating and bantering back and forth with Kramer during the show. “Justin returns for
his second year, providing comedy relief and trackside clown antics. He is always happy to interfere with the stunt drivers and their cars as he stumbles around the track in many close calls and dangerous situations, performing just inches away from high speeding cars in perfectly timed stunts,” officials said. Jake Curtis is also part of the production as the stunt technician. Curtis pushes the envelope as far as daring driving feats go. Curtis is famous for driving his Dodge Avenger and dropping through f ire, along with other stunts such as the death-defying AutoBats. Curtis takes care of business both in the spotlight and behind the scenes. “Watch the nation’s top stunt drivers perform a series of bumper clicking cross overs with brand new Dodge Avenger automobiles while negotiating narrow, confining ramp elevations. The sights, sounds and smells that have entertained generation after generation of thrill show fans has been rejuvenated with a sense of heritage far greater then any production has achieved in recent years,” officials said.

Grandstand fun Demolition Derby a smashing good time BY BYRON C. WESSELL Gazette Newspapers
JEFFERSON - The rich tradition of the demolition derby will once again be returning to the Ashtabula County Fair on Thursday, Aug. 11, and Friday, Aug. 12. The demolition derby will start at 7:30 p.m. on both nights, and admission to the grandstand will be $4. The Nation-wide Demolition Derby takes place in the infield of the track in front of the grandstand. There were 53 drivers who participated in the demolition derby last year, including 15 compact car drivers. There were four heats in the demolition derby, and the top three in each heat advanced to the feature event. Each driver qualifying received $25 and a trophy. Last year’s winner of the demolition derby was Mike Scwentker, who edged out Brett
Bentley. The first night of the derby is open to all Ashtabula County drivers. Local drivers like that the first night is closed to outsiders, and they enjoy driving in a county fair atmosphere in front of their family and friends. The fans in attendance love seeing the cars run into each other and their favorite driver smashing and damaging the other cars. One of the best parts of the demolition derby to a lot of the drivers is the preparation of the car. The drivers have to follow certain requirements to keep their car legal for competition, but they have plenty of say in how the car looks. The driver gets to design their car anyway they want, from the number of the car to the color scheme. Some of the drivers even go as far as having a theme ever y year for the car. The cars are inspected prior to the

tion is for safety purposes. All of the drivers are given a list of rules pertaining to the preparation of their car, along with their entry form. The second night is open to anyone, and drivers from around the region like the event because it is conveniently located and offers a driving challenge. Drivers come from as far away as eastern
Pennsylvania and New York to compete for the prize money. One of the main rules for the event is that drivers are required to continue to make contact with other vehicles as long as they are able and the last car able to run is the winner. All judges’ rulings are final, and judges are in the pit area and signup area ensuring drivers don’t try to slip anything past that give them an advantage. One of the most important parts of the derby for drivers is to stay off the logs, because once they get a tire or two over it is nearly impossible to escape. The derby is composed of several indi-
vidual heats and one feature with cash prizes going to the winners of each heat and a grand prize going to the winner of the feature. Fair board members caution that all drivers must be old enough to have a valid Ohio driver license or license from their particular state. The Nation-Wide Demolition Derby puts on between 75 and 100 demolition derbies from May through November in 18 different states. The Ashtabula County Fair usually sees between 50 to 100 drivers each night. Those numbers don’t include all of the friends and family who help in the pits.

Grandstand fun Two country western singers are fair’s Saturday night grandstand feature By DORIS COOK Gazette Newspapers
JEFFERSON - Josh Thompson, song writer and singer from the Nashville area, will be the Saturday night grandstand performer at the Ashtabula County Fair on Aug. 13, along with guest star James Wesley, another up-and-coming country singer. Thompson grew up in Milwaukee in a working man’s family, then got his first guitar at 21. His father owned a concrete business which Thompson worked in between going to college to study forestry and wildlife management. He liked writing music and recruited some buddies to form a rock band doing gigs in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula at music festivals
and backwoods bars. Thompson, after two years in college, decided to take off for Alaska to take a wilderness guide course using his skills from books and hunting on his grandfather’s farm as a kid. With no job prospects, Thompson came back home. He began to write more country music, then headed to Nashville in 2005. After seven months of writers’ nights, networking and his first attempt at co-writing, Thompson said he landed a publishing deal with Ash Street Music. James Wesley In April 2008, Thompson signed a management deal with Creek House Entertainment’s got a label deal. More recently, Thompson has Julianne Drennon. opened for artists including Brad Paisley, Eric “She believed in me enough to pitch my Church, Jamey Johns and Hank Williams Jr. songs free of charge,” he says. “I love feeding on the crowd. I love to get them rowdy and get rowdy back. I like to put on a show, turn around and beat the drums a little bit-literally,” Thompson said. Thompson professes his love for the bluecollar, honky-tonk crowd. His newest release is titled, “Way Out Here.” “The men and women that, like it says in ‘Beer on the Table,’ pretty much work their butts off all week and like to have a good time Friday night, because that’s who I am—a working guy that got lucky enough to get a recording contract,” he said. Guest star with Thompson is James Wesley, who grew up in Mound Valley, a tiny community in southeastern Kansas. Wesley says he f irst discovered countr y music in his grandmother’s record collection of songs by Marty Robbins, George Jones and Ray Price. Wesley was encouraged to sing by his mother, who would hear him singing in his bedroom with the door shut. She wanted him to sing in church, so Wesley started singing in the family church, then taught himself to play a guitar, an old Stella practice model. By his late teens, Wesley was singing in local nightclubs and considering a career in music. He moved to Eureka Springs, Arkansas, where he performed in nightly music and variety shows. He got married to wife Mindee and they have two children. Wesley and his family followed a dream, selling everything including their home in Arkansas, then headed to Nashville Music City cir-

cuit. He took a construction job to support the family and met songwriter Rodney Clawson and producer Dan Frizsell. The trio began recording together with their work being noticed by Broken Bow Records. Wesley signed with the recording company and released his first song, “Jackson Hole” as
a debut single. His single moved up in the charts. He hopes to stay in the music field, singing songs that everybody wants to hear and that everybody can feel. Tickets for the Josh Thompson / James Wesley grandstand show are on sale now at the fair secretary’s office in Jefferson. Tickets are $10 per person.

Nightly Concerts The Robinsons bring family entertainment to Barnard Entertainment Center by MARTHA SOROHAN Gazette Newspapers
JEFFERSON - There will be something for all musical tas tes when the Robinson Family presents concerts at 1, 3 and 7 p.m. Aug. 11 at the outdoor Barnard Entertainment Center on the midway at the Ashtabula County Fair. Hailing from Owenton, Ky., and accompanying themselves with saxophone and guitar, the group performs music from the 1920s through the 1960s, in styles ranging from country, contemporar y, classic rock , gospel and an occasional polka. Audiences will hear the sounds of Big Band, Glenn Miller, the Andrews Sisters and bluegrass. And, they may be asked to sing along with a Beach Boys medley. “The most important thing you’ll see at our concerts is the audience,” says the Robinsons’ web site. The entertainment comes to Ashtabula County Fairgoers at no cost. Fair board member Everett Helfer is ex-
cited about the Robinson Family’s f irst appearance at the Ashtabula County Fair and the story behind it. Helfer ’s wife, Betty, won the appearance last January in a drawing at a county fair convention in Columbus. “ They put on a show themselves at the hotel, and we signed up for the drawing during the day. At the end of the show, they drew the name of my wife, Betty,” said Helfer. The Robinsons were excited about coming to Ashtabula as well. They are well acquainted with the Helfers, who have heard the talented family sing ever y year at the Mahoning County Fair in Canfield. Helfer had been trying to get The Robinsons involved with the Ashtabula County Covered Bridge Festival, but it simply never worked out. “ They were happier than Betty, because they knew us, and are delighted about coming to Ashtabula County,” Helfer said. Patriarch Jackie
Robinson agrees. “Mr. Helfer has been precious to us, and we are excited to be a part of the Fair, he said. The Robinsons have been singing for over 30 years, ever since Princeton University graduate Jackie, a former teacher, and his wife, Mar y Ruth, began singing to students in their home. “The students said we made them feel better,” Jackie says on the web site. After singing informally across New York state, they won a talent contest at the New York State Fair. The rest is history. Jackie gave up
his teaching career, and the couple sold their home and began a musical career that has taken them to national television and a lucrative contract with Chevron Oil. Robinson singers include son, Mark , and daughter—inlaw Sharron Robinson, and a third generation. Mark and Sharron’s children, Andrew, 7, Michael, 4, and twoyear-old Samantha will be on the tour as well. Andrew sings “God Bless America” and another old song, “Tell Me You Love Me, Katie Kline.” Even before the third generation be-

The 1 and 3 p.m. shows will offer an hour of music, but the 7 p.m. show, planned for early evening to make sure that event sponsors have a chance to attend, may run an additional f ive or ten minutes. “I know what kind of shows they bring, and it will be especially good for the veterans. And at 7 p.m., they’ll put on an even better show,” said Helfer.

gan touring with the family, The Robinsons described their show as familyfriendly. “Entertaining people means loving people, sharing our lives, laughing together, cr ying together and being family together,” Jackie says. Special events Kids’ tractor pull set for Aug. 14 BY SADIE PORTMAN Gazette Newspapers
JEFFERSON - The Kiddie Tractor Pull will be available once again at the Ashtabula County Fairgrounds. The pint-size tractor pull will be held on Sunday, Aug. 14, at 2 p.m. in the 4-H Building Expo Center. “Bob Flack , a [former] fair board member, started the pull 20-plus years ago,” Fair Board President Larry Kotnik said. “He ran the Kiddie Tractor Pull for several years.” The event will give kids who are too young to reach the pedals of a real tractor but not too old to comfortably sit and
pedal a toy, bikepedal-operated tractor a chance to pull some weights. Flack developed the tractor pull and had the idea to have the kids pull a sled. “[Flack] built the sled we use for the event,” Kotnik said. “It has a little weight that the sled pulls up as the child pedals, just like the regular truck , tractor and semi-pull sleds. The pull always draws a crowd.” Like in the regular tractor pull, the child who pulls the sled the farthest wins. “They try to do it the entire length. We measure as far as they get on the track. If there is a tie, we put
more weight on the sled and have a pull off,” Kotnik said. Unlike a regular tractor pull, the Kiddie Tractor Pull in a sense measures the child’s strength. The kids participating in the pull will be divided into four classes, girls four years old and under, boys four years old and younger, girls and and boys five years old and girls and boys six years old. “ The girls do it separately, then the boys compete,” Kotnik said. No child will leave the event empty handed, as everyone is recognized for their efforts. “The winners of the tractor pull will win a trophy and ribbon for their efforts,” Kotnik said. “Each child will receive a ribbon for participating. The tractor used was bought at a local tractor supply store years back and it has been in use ever since. “We bought our pedal tractor from an
area tractor supply store several years ago. Usually any farm equipment dealer would have them to buy,” Kotnik said. The tractor pull is a popular attraction for
kids and adults alike. “The kids have got farming in their blood. A child might come up and want a John
Deere or an International tractor to drive,” Kotnik said. “Our pedal tractor is a Minneapolis Moline.”

Grandstand fun Tractors pull crowds to Ashtabula County Fair BY SADIE PORTMAN Gazette Newspapers
JEFFERSON - Sunday, Aug. 14, will once again feature one of the most popular Ashtabula County Fair shows, the tractor pull. A wide array of tractors are used during the event, ranging from stock tractors to garden tractors. “We have a separate tractor pull for these events. The pull track is directly in front of the grandstand. It is the same track used for the demolition derby,” Fair Board member Bob Spellman said. The tractor pull originally used to be featured on Saturdays but was moved up to Sundays and has remained there ever since. “Pulls have always been a feature of the fair on Sunday. Many years ago, it was Saturday. It has always been a good day for participants to get out,” Spellman said.
The farm stock tractors are for Ashtabula County residents only, with weigh ins beginning at 9 a.m. Stock tractors will have several weight classes, including, 6,000 pounds, 8,000 pounds, 10,000 pounds and 15,000 pounds. The 16,000-pound, unlimited rubbertired farm tractors will also be featured. Purses for each tractor will be $400, and there are eight spots available to place. The first-place prize is $100, second $80, third $70, fourth $50, fifth $40, sixth $30, seventh $20 and eighth is $10. Hook fees will be required for both the a.m. and p.m. pulls. The a.m. pull is $10 and the p.m. pull is $25. The stock tractors and 4x4 pulls will be at 11 a.m. on Sunday. The garden tractors pull will start at 2 p.m. Sunday. The entry fee will be $5 per class. The
classes will be 1100 stock altered, 1100 modified stock, 1100 stock twins, 1050 stock 14-16, 1000 stock 13 and under and 1000 Rugrat lawn stock, which is ages 10 through 12. All classes will be conducted according to the Lake Erie pulling rules. Modif ied tractor and super stock tractors will begin their pulls at 6 p.m., with a 5 p.m. weigh in on Sunday. The classes represented at the p.m. tractor pull are as follows, the 7,200-pound, single-engine, modified tractors, hot farm tractors, division 5 super stock tractor and antique V-8 tractors. Again there will be a f irst through eighth place in the modified tractor pull, but with higher stakes, with first place receiving $250, second place $180, third $140, fourth $120, f ifth
$100, sixth $90, seventh $70 and eighth $50. The hot farm tractor pull’s prizes are, f irst $250, second $180, third $140, fourth $120, fifth $100, sixth $90, seventh, $70 and eighth, $50. The division 5 super stock tractor pull offers the same prizes. The final class of antique V-8 tractors will give out the following prizes: first place, $190, second, $140, third, $120, fourth, $80, fifth, $60, sixth, $50, seventh, $40 and eighth, $20. The tractor pull is a crowd favorite with packed grandstands. “The late afternoon show will fill the grandstand. I’ve never seen a time when it was not full,” Spellman said. Remembering the Past Ashtabula County Fair celebrates 165th year BY STEFANIE WESSELL Gazette Newspapers
JEFFERSON - The year 2011 seems to be a year of notable anniversaries, as Ashtabula County celebrates its bicentennial and the Ashtabula County Fair celebrates its 165th fair. Gazette Newspapers also reaches a benchmark this year, as it publishes its 75th annual “fair edition.” In keeping with tradition, every year the Gazette publishes a special fair edition in honor of the Ashtabula County Fair. The annual fair edition is the largest and most widely read issue published each year.
The issue is filled with the fair schedule, stories and photos on 4-H projects, details about entertainment at the fair and more. But even before the Gazette started printing a special edition dedicated to the fair, it still promoted the popular event. In a centennial edition of the Jefferson Gazette from 1936, an article details how the Ashtabula Agricultural Society first organized in 1823, with the first fair held in Austinburg. The society had to reorganize in 1842, as it found little encouragement from pioneer farmers in its early days. “Ashtabula county is believed to have

is among the historical documents owned by the editor of the Jefferson Gazette. The records of the pioneer agricultural society indicate that the movement found little support from the farmers of the county.” (Oh, how the times
have changed!) The article goes on to share that the society was the first of its kind in the state and held five fairs before it disbanded. It reorganized as the Ashtabula County Agricultural Society in 1842 and has held
fairs each year with few exceptions, although the 1936 fair was booked as the 90th annual event. Another article from the July 3, 1936, edition of the Gazette states that 1,300 boys and girls belonged to 4-H that year.

Remembering the Past As the Ashtabula County Fair celebrates its 165th anniversary this year, take a look at these old photos that have been collected by the Ashtabula County Fair Board throughout the years. The photos show what the fairgrounds have looked like in the past.
In this photo, a group of men stand in front of the log cabin in 1915. The cabin still sits on the Ashtabula County fairgrounds in Jefferson.
The Floral Building, also known as the octagon building, is shown in a scene from the 1900s. The building is still in use at the fairgrounds today.
