Glavickas honored at basketball camp BY BYRON C. WESSELL Gazette Newspapers ORWELL – Noah Glavickas, a Grand Valley Middle School student, recently participated in the Keystone State Invitational Basketball Camp held at Slippery Rock University. Noah is entering the seventh grade and attended the camp for the first time because he wanted to improve his all-around basketball game. Noah accomplished that mission as he won two awards during the camp. The first award was for most improved player. “It means that my practice is paying off,” Noah said on what it means to be awarded the most improved player award. Noah has worked hard on his basketball game both at home and at the camp and that hard work and dedication paid off. “I worked on ball-handling the most. Youngstown Class B was able to score in the first inning to take an early lead in what turned out to be an incredible pitchers dual with the final score of 2-1. Austin Brunsetter, of Mecca, got a hit in the first inning for the Youngstown Class B team. Mexico was able to tie the game up at 1-1 after scoring on a passed ball in the fifth inning. DeVivo catches a whopper walleye BY BYRON C. WESSELL Gazette Newspapers ANDOVER TOWNSHIP - The DeVivo family lives in Jefferson but has a nice little place on Pymatuning Lake where the family has gone camping and fishing for the past 15 years. The family has been enjoying the lake for years, but on June 24 the family had even more fun than usual. Angelo DeVivo and his son Anthony, along with Anthony’s five-year-old sister, were fishing in Pymatuning Lake. The family was drifting for crappie and ended up catching a dozen or so crappie and two perch and releasing five catfish. However, the biggest catch of the day was a 28-inch-long walleye that weighed seven-and-onehalf pounds. Anthony, who is only nine years old and entering the fourth grade, was using an ultra-light Rhino pole and had a juicy night crawler on the hook. Anthony then felt something on his line and shouted to his dad. “Dad, get the net! Get the net,” Anthony shouted to his dad. It ended up being quite the battle with the ultra-light set-up
as Anthony had the huge walleye on the end of his line. In fact, Anthony could barely feel his arms at the end of it. However, Anthony got the job done and was able to bring the walleye in close enough to the boat and to the surface that right when the walleye cut the line, his dad was able to scoop up the fish in the net. “When it was in the boat flipping, I could barely breath and I had to loosen my life vest,” Anthony said, describing the feeling afterward. “It was really exciting and my dad thought it was a snag at first, and I did for a little bit, but then I could feel it swimming around. I knew it was going to be big, but I thought it was a cat(fish),” Anthony said on how he felt when he reeled in his walleye. It was the first walleye Anthony ever caught. He is used to catching mostly blue gill, catfish, perch and bass. “When I flipped it in the boat, it was really exciting and he (Anthony) was psyched. I was really

Toppings hits hole-in-one while on vacation BY BYRON C. WESSELL Gazette Newspapers JEFFERSON - It may have taken 40 years, but Bernard Toppings hit his first hole-in-one on Monday, Aug. 1. nard along with his wife Nella golfing at Hickory Grove on Friday, July 29th and then again on Monday. Bernard used a five wood and a Bridgestone Ball E5 for his hole-in-one on hole number two. He was also wearing Foot Joy Shoes at the time. “It was the first hole-in-one I’ve ever had and I’ve been golfing for 40 years. I don’t even know how to describe it. It’s sort of like a serene feeling. I wasn’t jumping up and down or running around or anything like that. I was just amazed it went in the hole from that distance,” Bernard said. Bernard had just a week or so earlier went for an exact fitting in South Carolina for his golf game. There he learned that he had a low trajectory on his swing and was told to start using the Bridgestone ball.
The pro-fitter figured out Bernard’s launch angle and swing speed and suggested the Bridgestone ball because it spins more and therefore rises while in the air more. The foursome of Bernard Toppings, Larry Toppings, Susie Toppings and Nella Toppings saw the ball coming down and heard it hit the pin. However, they could not be sure it went in until they drove up near the pin. Bernard Toppings knew he hit a good shot and that the ball hit the front of the green. The foursome looked for the ball on the green first and then Bernard’s wife Nella got out of the cart and saw the ball in the hole. “We were excited, because we’ve never seen him or anyone hit a hole-in-one before. We were just all very excited,” Susie Toppings said. Bernard tries to golf once a
week, but prior to the vacation had not golfed since June 9th. He also got some of his clubs shortened, while at the pro-fitter, but was still using his old clubs at the time of the hole-in-one.

PONY Chase Thurber, from Andover, played well defensively in left field for Youngstown. Sage Cantini, of Rock Creek, also made some nice plays at second base. In one of the scoring drives Chase Thurber led off with a single for Youngstown. Hunter Snyder followed

Thurber also had a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded and Austin Brunsetter had an RBI single. The Chinese Taipei pitcher was constantly hitting the outside corner. Youngstown Class B collected nine hits in the game but was unable to put a big scoring drive together. Chinese Taipei eventu-

Not every fishing trip ends with a big fish, but Anthony has always been grateful for each chance out in the water. At the same time, we have been able to create the perfect training ground, taking all the benefits of aquatic centers around the globe and incorporating them into one state of the art facility. I can think of no better place than SPIRE to make future dreams come true.” The new aquatics center will also play a central role at SPIRE Academy. favorite fish to catch is bass. When Anthony grows up he is considering becoming a game warden or fishing warden. “I really enjoy being in the outdoors and I love learning about it,” Anthony said. As Anthony gets older, he is looking into opportunities to spend time with one of the wardens at Pymatuning Lake. “He’s definitely an outdoorsman. He loves it,” Angelo said about his son. Usually when Anthony and his dad go fishing, Anthony is the one to decide which direction to go and which fishing spot to hit. Anthony also asks about the water temperature when deciding on an area. “I pick places where I’ve
had luck before or where we see fish on the fish finder,” Anthony said. Anthony also pays attention while driving to the lake and looks for spots in the lake with a lot of green areas and sometimes he ends up going there. One time while out on the lake, Anthony and his dad watched a bald eagle swoop down and pluck a fish out of the water. Witnessing that feat was pretty exciting, but Anthony was already thinking like a true fisherman. “Let’s move over there,” Anthony said to his dad. In the end, the walleye ended up feeding a family of six for an evening, but the story and experience will last a lifetime.

Noah particularly liked the Keystone State Camp because of all the actual basketball playing he got to participate in. “The thing that I liked most about this camp was that you did not do a lot of sitting around listening to lectures, it was an action camp,” Noah said on what he liked best. Some of the things Noah worked on at the camp were two-ball, ball-handling and using proper defensive fundamentals. In the end, Noah went home with two awards and an increased knowledge on basketball and an improved basketball skill set. SUBMITTED PHOTO

Thompson Kart Raceway holds point race BY BILL LEVY Gazette Newspapers THOMPSON - There was a sense of “family” on Aug. 21 at the Thompson Kart Raceway. Many youngsters were seen enjoying the day with their parents and siblings while waiting to ride. “We do this 17 times a year, which amounts to about half the weekends,” said Doug Marsh club president of Championship Kart Racing. “We have two Heat races, one Feature, and seven classes.” Marsh said the age categories are: Kid Karts (5-7), Junior Sportsman (8-12), Junior (12-15) and Senior (15+). Nine year old Maggie

Steven Dressler of Mentor also nine, echoed a similar sentiment. “My dad used to race stock cars,” he said. “I want to carry on the tradition.” It is that atmosphere that people seem to want to be a part of. “With my job at WISECO I do many things related to racing like working with the Texas Motor Speedway, said Ed Stewart formerly of Chardon who now resides in the Forth Worth Area.

All of the hard spent years are paying off. It’s very rewarding,” said Vencill. ABC Lanes owner Roy Heath Jr. had brainstormed the idea of giving back to the youth bowlers years ago, which finally came to fruition starting last year. The money awarded to the winners is raised through 50-50 raffles during youth leagues on Saturdays.
A potential future recipient of the ABC Lanes scholarship was present at ABC Lanes during the presentation of the scholarships. Seth Rose, a frequenter of ABC Lanes during youth league play, recorded the highest game score (224), highest 3-game series (587), and the highest average (151) for the entire state of Ohio for his age group of 8 & under. MADISON - The Madison Blue Streaks Freshmen football team is coached by B.J. Titman. Titman is entering his second year of coaching the team. The Blue Streaks have a small team this year with only right around 20 players. “Practice is going pretty good. We have a small group this year with only around 20 kids,” Titman said. “The kids are picking stuff up well and we’ve been trying to do what the varsity team is doing. I have great kids who are very respectful and who enjoy playing and being around each other,” Titman continued. The most challenging part of coaching a freshmen football team is only being with the players for a year before they move up to the next level. Each team has their own identity. “You have to try to get to know their personalities quickly,” Titman said on what it was like coaching a new team every year. The previous year Titman was fortunate enough to have coached the 8th grade team and then was able to coach basically the same unit again at the freshmen level. The goals for the Blue Streaks this year is to get better every week. “We want to be able to go over film and see fewer and fewer mistakes each week and get them ready to play varsity,” Titman said. This years freshmen team has three elected captains in Kenny Wright, Ricky Simcic and Jack Holl. Kenny Wright is expected to play several different positions this year including fullback, tailback, kick-returner, outside linebacker and safety. “I’m looking forward to hitting people and staying in shape. I also look forward to having a fun and successful season,” Wright said on what he looks forward to this football season. “It means a lot to me to be named one of the captains and the responsibility of leading the team,” Wright said on what it means to be elected one of the captains. Ricky Simcic will be kicking the ball for Madison this year and also playing middle linebacker on defense and center on offense. “I’m looking forward to hitting, having fun and getting together with my friends,” Simcic said on what he looks forward too. Jack Holl will be playing tight end, defensive end and punting for the Blue Streaks freshmen team. “I like just about everything about football. The whole concept of the sport,” Holl said on what he likes about playing football. “I look forward to having a successful season,” Holl added.

cross country and Gruskiewicz believes it will be easier to make it to Regionals in Division II. Other key members of the boys’ cross country team are juniors Rodney Bell and Drew Wonderling, along with sophomores Rory Gallatin, Chet Mientkiewiscz and Nick Mezinger. “We’re really fortunate to have good leadership,” Cross Country Coach Tony Noxon said during Meet the Team night. The Lakers are a really young team this year, but they have numbers in their
sophomore and freshmen class. The Lakers have a strong freshmen class in Michael Montello, Aaron Cross, Jason Wilson, Corry Mientkiewiscz and Curtis Kovalak. For the girls cross country team the Lakers will be without graduated seniors Ami Turner, Nikki Gale and Colleen Wonderling. The Lakers will be led this year by Alexis Cunningham, Gabrielle Lipinsky, Courtney Brown, Kayla Hanneman and Abbey Pike.

Edgewood Girl’s Soccer team preview BY JOE MEANEY Gazette Newspapers ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP – The Edgewood Girl’s soccer team is ready to take their play to the next level. The Warrior squad is full of experienced players, returning 14 letter winners including last year’s co-MVPs Alana Candela and Caity Mills. In addition, head coach Juli Meaney plans for nine seniors to start during the regular season. Entering her fourth year as the Warriors’ head coach, Meaney expects her team to compete and win in the post season tournament. Since a third division was added to girl’s soccer, the Edgewood squad has moved from Division 1 to Division 2. Meaney believes that this should allow for a more even match in a sectional game. With a team full of veteran seniors and a mix of youthful talent, the Warriors may be on the right path to accomplish their goals, which includes having the best record in the county, getting a high seed in the tournament, and winning a sectional game.
“We want to win more games outside the county than the year before, too. That has always been one of our goals,” said coach Meaney. The girls squad has went through some position changes to best suit the teams needs. A rearrangement and shuffling of midfielders and forwards looks to improve the Warriors ball position and offensive potency. “I’m looking forward to a new team with a bunch of young players and the changes in positions,” said Julianne Newsome, a fouryear starter for the Warriors. The fourteen returning letter winners for Edgewood are Maggie Meaney, Caity Mills, Valerie Teed, Grace Kendzerski, Alana Candela, Elizabeth Heffner, Taylor Blair, Morgan Stemple, Julianne Newsome, Taylor Katchur, Emily Nerad, Carrie Pozum, Cortney Humphrey, and Zhen Eidens. Coach Meaney’s team is very large, boasting a 35 girl roster, 13 of which are freshman and 13 of which

are seniors. With such a large roster, Meaney thinks that her team has the depth that is necessary to combat any injuries that may unfortunately occur during the season. The seniors on the Warriors’ team are a close knit group, many of which who have been playing together for over six years, dating back to junior high and ear-
lier. “It feels good because I’ve been part of this team for four years. It’s bittersweet because soccer has been part of my life for years and I’m going to miss the team,” said Newsome, referring to her final year of high school soccer. The Warriors won their first game versus Ursuline on August 20, winning 9-4.
Lakers seeking fifth straight golf title BY BYRON C. WESSELL Gazette Newspapers ANDOVER TOWNSHIP - The Pymatuning Valley Lakers golf team under head coach Jeff Compan have won four straight NAC golf titles and are seeking a fifth straight. The team will have to do so without Roman Guman, Adam Lane and Frank Boggs who were all lost to graduation. This year the team will be led by the Schantz twins in Ian and Elizabeth Schantz, who are both seniors. Alec Gabriel is another senior on the golf team. “I look forward to improving a lot and being more of a team this year. I want to help some of the underclassman this year and I’d eventually like to play in college,” Ian Schantz said on how it feels to be a senior. “I’m excited to be a senior, but disappointed because it’s my last season to golf,” Elizabeth Schantz said on being a senior. “I’ve had fun and want to make this the best year,” Elizabeth continued. “I want to get better this
MADISON - Jeremy Verdi, head coach of the Madison boy’s cross country team figured this was a good year for a “fresh start.” For “years and years” the Blue Streaks have practiced and had their meets at the Y. That has changed this season, as the Blue Streaks now call Camp Stigwandish in South Madison their home course. “It (Camp Stigwandish) has more terrain,” Verdi said. “It is more challenging. It is has more deep woods. It is a truer cross country course. It will get us tougher. I think change is good once in a while. It is good to get a fresh start.”
BY BILL LEVY Gazette Newspapers MADISON - Most people would likely agree that second-year Madison girls cross country coach Kelly Kirchner has a good ‘problem’ as the Blue Streaks prepare for the 2011 season. For a team that returns their top four runners from last years’ team which finished second in the Premier Athletic Conference (PAC), Kirchner is looking for someone to fill the numberfive slot. “That is where I have the most pressure” she said. “It is pretty much a wide-open competition.” The Blue Streaks do return number one runner in junior Erin Hord along with fellow junior Annette Brickman. Seniors Taylor Cline and Allison Rothlisberger also return to round out the top four. Those four will be relied on heavily as Kirchner admits the Blue Streaks “would like to” win the PAC. Kirchner is well aware of what they are capable of. “They have been running a while,” she said. “They are returning juniors and seniors. They know the work it takes and have all been training a lot.” The former Perry high school and Mt. Union runner admits to spending a good deal of time in ex-

year,” Alec Gabriel said on being a senior member of the golf team. The golf team is also returning letter winners in: Warren Kozlowski, Mitchell Dick, Tim Baker and Chris French.
Some of the freshmen on the team are Steve Urchek, Nathan Hootman and Chase Thurber. The team has plenty of goals in mind, especially winning a fifth straight NAC title.
This will be a new beginning in other ways too as the Blue Streaks only lost three runners to graduation: Clay Densmore, Mitch Farnsworth and Bobby Bismark. Bismark was the lone Blue Streak to qualify for the Regionals last season. Verdi knows what lies ahead, and he feels he has set reasonable goals for this upcoming season for a Madison team that has no seniors. “We are on a two-year plan,” he said. “We would like to get a group to Regionals this season and then move on to State the following year.” Verdi feels he has the athletes in place to do that. “We have a very talented group of 9 or 10

guys,” he said. Among them are Jason Ryan, Jon Roberts, Willie Rendek, Jon Pollock and Nick Farnsworth. Verdi, who excelled at cross country at Mercyhurst College and continues to run competitively for Hudson Vertical Runner even feels like leadership will not be a major concern. “I have appointed a group of three juniors (Ryan, Rendek, and Pollock) as captains,” he said. “I am teaching them how to be captains. They will become an extension of me. This goes beyond cross country meets and into life.” The Blue Streaks also expect to get a boost from junior Brandon Showers, a
El Camp Lanes located at 240 Stadium Avenue in Conneaut will be starting their Youth Bowling League on Sept. 17. Sign-ups will start on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 11 a.m. Bowling will begin the same day with children in grades second through sixth grade bowling at 11 a.m. and children in seventh through twelfth grade bowling at 1 or 1:30 p.m. After paying the initial USBC sanction fee all children in the bowling program will receive a T-shirt. The cost of bowling three games with shoes included is $8. The League runs from September until April. Last year 86 children participated and teams of four
were made up. Patches and other prizes are awarded for achieving certain bowling scores throughout the season. “They learn a lot about bowling and it gives them something to do and it makes them so happy,” El Camp Lanes owner Pat Cifelli said. There are several instructors and experienced bowlers on hand to help out the bowlers when needed. “We help them out and they can come up during special times and we help them with anything throughout the year. It’s very fun Saturdays for them,” Cifelli said. There are also different tournaments throughout the season to keep the children occupied, including an adult and child tournament with their parents.
“Hopefully, we’ll win another NAC title and I hope the team moves on to districts,” Warren Kozlowski said. “We want to go undefeated and go to sectionals,” Elizabeth Schantz added.
member of Madison’s 4x800 championship track team this past spring. “I am not sure how much he likes cross country now, but this will help him in track,” said Verdi, also Madison’s track coach. “This is a good way for track athletes to stay in shape.” Madison will open up the season on August 22nd in Ashtabula at Lakeside’s War at the Shore Invitational. They will travel to Willoughby South on August 27th before hosting their first ever meet, the UWanna Comeback, at Camp Stigwandish on September 3rd. “That will be neat,” Verdi said. “All the top finishers will have course records.”

plaining the sport to her runners that may not yet be familiar with cross country. “I tell them about different types of socks and sneakers,” Kirchner a 2005 graduate of Perry High School said. “They are new to it. They are just now starting to figure it out. They are starting to get competitive with one another now (after a couple weeks of practice).” Also among Kirchner’s tasks this year is to help coordinate the move to a new course. The Blue Streaks who have run for years at the YMCA will now have their meets and the majority of practices at Camp Stigwandish in South Madison. “It is really exciting,” she said. “Camp Stig is challenging. It is trail running. It is cross country at it’s hardest.” Still though Kirchner said the move is not easy for her personally. “I always ran at the Y in high school” she said. “It is bittersweet.” The Blue Streaks open the 2011 season on August 22nd at the War at the Shore Invitational at Lakeside. They then travel to Willoughby South on Aug. 27 before hosting their first ever meet, the UWanna Come Back on Sept. 3. It will be a brand new course for a brand new number-five runner.
