Willoughby South Rebels rebuilding BY BYRON C. WESSELL Gazette Newspapers WILLOUGHBY – Nick Leskiewicz is entering his first year as the head coach of the South Rebels varsity golf team and is entering a rebuilding year. Leskiewicz will have to lead the team with the loss of five senior players from a year ago. The Rebels lost John Bagott, Cameron Daiber, Doug Yeckley, Ryan Kennedy and Lucas Chaney due to graduation. “We’re a very young team and this will be a big learning experience,” Leskiewicz said. The Rebels recently started three freshmen in a match against Lakeside. The South Rebels feature one senior this year in Jake Hall. “You have to treat the new guys as they come up with a little bit of compassion, because they don’t know what it’s like to have the pressure on them. You have
to tell them to relax and just play their game,” Hall said. “You also have to be a leader and a couple of junior share that with me. It’s a role, but we all mesh pretty well,” Hall added. “I love watching the kids develop and taking something that’s raw and molding it into something that can blossom in the future,” Leskiewicz said on what he likes best about coaching. The Rebels also feature three juniors in Eddie Lagucki, Chris Adams and Colin Greig. Greig currently holds the best average on the team shooting around a 41 on a consistent basis. “I’m just trying to improve and the team’s trying to improve,” Greig said on how the season is going. “I like being outside and just the history and the quite calmness,” Greig said on what he likes about playing golf. The Rebels look to rebuild this year and learn as they go.

Mustangs lose battle with Blue Jays BY BYRON C. WESSELL Gazette Newspapers NORTH JACKSON The Grand Valley Mustangs fell to JacksonMilton on Friday by a score of 25-20. Neither team would score in the first quarter, but traded touchdowns in the second quarter. Adam Moodt had a fiveyard touchdown for the Mustangs in the second, but Jackson-Milton an-
swered when Zach Nagy connected with John Gheradi on a big 94-yard touchdown. Neither team would tack on the extra point as the game was tied at 6-6 heading into halftime. Jackson-Milton scored the only touchdown in the third quarter on a 25yard run by Gheradi. Josh Kramer kicked in the extra point, making it 13-6. Grand Valley would
score 14 points in the fourth quarter, but Jackson-Milton got the two scores they needed to hold on for the 25-20 win. Grand Valley would come within one point when Joe Satterfield scored on a one-yard run, making it 13-12. However, that score did not last long as Cody Vaughn had another big play for Jackson-Milton when he returned the ball 89-yards on the kick off to
once again but the Blue Jays up. The Blue Jays would get the ball back and Nagy would run the ball in from one-yard out, making it 2512. Grand Valley would continue to battle as thirdstring quarter back Kyle Orgovan connected with Stanley Sirrine for an eight-yard touchdown. Sirrine ran in the twopoint conversion, but Grand Valley fell 25-20.

BY ALLAN MONONEN Gazeete Newspapers CONNEAUT - This season’s edition of the Geneva Eagle football team certainly can take advantage of turnovers. Two weeks ago the Eagles forced four Edgewood miscues and scored four times. Friday in Conneaut, the Eagles scored three times on Spartan mistakes enroute to a 61-0 shutout. Geneva welcomed back Cody Morrow and gave him the ball on their initial series. The Eagles marched downfield with Morrow going the last ten yards for the score. Hugo Reyes kicked the first of seven extra points and it was 7-0 at the six minute mark. On Conneaut’s first series, linebacker Tim Kirk stepped in front of a Spartan pass and returned it 21 yards for a TD at 5:02. One minute later, on Conneaut’s first down play, Kirk again pulled down a pass and took it 29 yards for the score. The Spartans were unable to move the ball on their next series and prepared to punt. The wet ball went through punter Aaron Bower’s hands but Bowers was able to fall on the ball at his own one yard line. On the first Geneva play, Tim Costello plunged over for the score and at 3:43 of the first quarter the Eagles had a 27-0 lead. “Turnovers will always be a part of the learning process in football. They cost us big time last week at Jefferson. they carried us to a win at Edgewood and tonight. I never would have believed we would get three of them returned for touchdowns. Tim Kirk was great in seeing those balls coming his way and I thought our defense really stepped up which is what you want kids to do. Kyle Woerner scored on a fumble for the second time this year and we had a lot of kids get after it tonight. I am proud of the kids the way we came back after a loss last week.Conneaut came out and hit us but we never let them get in the game,” Eagles Coach Tony Hassett praised his team. The Eagle onslaught continued in the second period. After a short Spartan punt, the visitors took over inside Conneaut territory. On the first play Cody Morrow ran around left end for 30 yards and a score. Conneaut moved the ball to midfield on a pass reception by Tyler Rose but on the next play Kyle Woerner scooped up a fumble and went fifty yards for the score, his second TD fumble recovery of the season. On their next possession the host Spartans did move the ball, gaining a first down by freshman running back Troy Colucci but their mistakes continued. Scott Warner intercepted a pass and weaved his way to the Spartan 13. QB Bandon Pakkala scored on the next play, going the distance around right end for the TD. The half ended with the Eagles holding a 47-0 advantage. After the intermission, the Eagle QB completed a pass to receiver Marshall LaRiche deep into Spartans territory. Morrow ran the last 20 yards for the score. “We came out in the second half and Pakkala hit LaRiche with a nice pass. The line did a nice job on the blast (run) and we were able to get everyone in the game,” Hassett added. The Spartans threatened in the final period. After a nice return by Brandon Luce and yards gained by Troy Collucci, the hosts advanced deep into Eagle land. A pass by freshman QB Nick Root fell short at the Eagle 20 and the visitors took over. While the Spartans defense gave up territory grudgingly, the Eagles pushed their way downfield. Freshman Henry Schnars went around right end for ten yards for a Geneva TD,making the final 61-0. Despite missing five starters with injury, there were some bright spots for the Spartans. Tyler Rose and Brandon Luce returned kickoffs for good yardage and freshman Troy Colucci had some nice gains. In the trenches the Spartans certainly held their own on the lines but their own mistakes kept giving the Eagles the ball. “We started three freshmen, Gary Duris started and played both ways,”Conneaut Coach Rocco Dobran commented. “Offensively we have to learn to be disciplined and play mistake free. For example, the QB has to learn when to hold the ball, when to throw it away. We have to prevent turnovers. It puts a damper on things when we come out of the gate down 28-0.The kids are learning and starting to execute. The offense and defense played their hearts out. We had to play a lot of substitutes who made rookie mistakes but the kids played hard,” Dobran summed up his team’s performance. Geneva improves to 2-1, while Conneaut falls to 0-3. On the stat sheet, Cody Morrow returned to action with 13 carries for 88 yards.Shane Herter added 12 carries for 47, Brandon Pakkala, 3-15, Joey Jay, 8-14 and Henry Schnars with the ten yard TD run. For the Spartans, Troy Collucci ran ten times for 52 yards, Tyler Rose added 8 carries for 4 and Trey Sistrunk had two totes for 18. In the air, Pakkala completed one pass for 29 yards for the Eagles. Aaron Bowers had two completions in 8 attempts for two yards, Sam Distelrath had one completion in four attempts for 14 and Nick Root was 0-1. Marshall Lariche caught the Geneva pass for 29 yards. Tyler Rose hauled in two passes for 17 and Jackson Distelrarth caught one pass for no gain. This week, Geneva hosts South while Conneaut will host Ledgemont.

Lindsay Quinata is another instructor at SPIRE and she focuses more on the trampoline and tumbling aspect of gymnastics. The gymnastic program is increasing in size, but there is still plenty of room left to grow. “We’re growing and we have a great opportunity here at the GaREAT and SPIRE and I hope to see it develop into the large program it once was,” Quinata added on the gymnastics program. With the amount of leadership and dedication being put into SPIRE that goal is sure to be reached.

Madison gets past Perry BY BYRON C. WESSELL Gazette Newspapers PERRY – The Madison Blue Streaks brought the “Little Brown Jug” back to Madison with a 34-6 win over the Perry Pirates. Perry had won the past few match-ups with Madison, but the Blue Streaks ended the Pirates winning streak. Madison improved to 3-0 on the season with the win. The Blue Streaks got the game rolling by converting on a fake punt on a fourth-and-three situation. Andy Karlson, who is both the punter and quarterback for Madison, rolled out of the pocket and connected with Jesse DeJesus for a 36-yard completion to extend the drive. Corey Grubb was then able to kick in a 25-yard field goal
when the drive stalled again to give Madison a 30 lead. Madison took a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter after driving nearly 75 yards for a score. Mark Murray ended the drive with a four-yard touchdown run. The Blue Streaks would put up 20 points in the second quarter to take a 26-3 lead into half time. DeJesus would add a five-yard touchdown of his own to give Madison a 16-0 lead. The Pirates would get on the board with a 13-yard touchdown run by Nate Levkulich. BY BYRON C. WESSELL Gazette Newspapers ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP – The Edgewood Warriors hosted the Lakeside Dragons football team on Friday, Sept. 9. The game was deadlocked at zero for the majority of the first half. However, Lakeside scored twice late in the first half and went on to win 20-0. Chase Knight set the Dragons up nicely with a good return to start the game. However, Frank Clayman was tackled for a loss and after the Warriors and Dragons traded penalties the Dragons were called for another penalty that ultimately ended the drive. The score was 0-0 after one quarter of play as Edgewood got another turnover on downs. Edgewood would continue to punt the ball and try to win on field position. The Warriors would then force the Dragons to punt the ball away and Edgewood had the ball on the 49-yard line. Anthonie Magda would run for eight yards and Riis Smith would pick up a first down. However, a false start backed the Warriors up and they would be forced to punt again. Knight would pick up

The Warriors would not have much going on their drive either as they punted the ball back to the Dragons. Knight once again had a good return and Hester ran for a first down. Knight would pick up five yards, but the Dragons would again be victim to penalties as a delay of game and a false start set Lakeside back. Magda would pick up a sack for the Warriors as
Lakeside turned the ball over on downs. The Dragons would eventually get on the board late in the first half as Knight ran the ball for a big 43-yard gain. Bruce Cox would then add 18-yards on the ground and Hester would run the ball in giving the Dragons a 6-0 lead. Lakeside would then attempt an onside kick and get the ball back. Knight and Mike Gasaway then ran the ball for the Dragons, before Knight ran the ball in from the five-yard line. Hester ran the ball in for the two-point conversion, as Lakeside led 14-0.
Lakeside would add another score in the third quarter as Cox scored on a 63-yard touchdown run. Neither team would score in the fourth quarter as Lakeside won 20-0. Chase Knight totaled 119 yards on 19 carries for the Dragons, while Cox picked up 89 yards on only three carries. Magda picked up 50 yards on eight carries for the Warriors. Lakside improved to 12 on the season, while Edgewood dropped to 1-2. Lakeside will host Riverside next week, while Edgewood travels to Pymatuning Valley.

ing for South were: Zach Latuh (44), Colin Greig (45) and Nick Kivvy (52). Sam Stholman also shot a 52 for South. “This was a good rebound win after the loss to Chardon. We’ll play them (Chardon) tomorrow (Wednesday, Sept. 7) and hopefully we’ll get them back,” Acierno said after the match against South. “It’s a good bounce back from losing to Chardon and hopefully it will give us great momentum to beat the Hilltopper’s,” Andes said. The Dragons did indeed pick up enough momentum as the next day they edged out Chardon 158 to 160. Acienro once again shot a 38. However, the rest of the team needed to shoot their best game as Mukina, DeGeorge and Andes all came through with a 40.
Holden Parr had the lowest score of the day with a 36 for Chardon. Also adding to the final score for
ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP – The Edgewood Warriors hosted the Jefferson Falcons in a recent varsity volleyball game. The match would come down to the fifth set as Edgewood won three sets to two. Edgewood won the first set 25-17. Jefferson would go up 2-0 in the first set after a kill by Rachel Moyer and a kill that was too long by Edgewood’s Ashley Thomas. However, Thomas and the Warriors would battle back to take a 7-2 lead behind three kills by Thomas and six service points by Amanda Rodenbucher. Moyer would try to help the Falcons battle back with another ace and another solid hit that found the line, but Edgewood would take advantage of five service points by Kayla Claypool to make it 13-5. Jefferson would battle back at 14-11, but Rodenbucher would pick up a kill for Edgewood and Taylor Diemer picked up an ace serve. Laura Cole and Arian Barile would each pick up a kill for Jefferson. Moyer would also pick up a block and Giulia Giancola had an ace serve, but Edgewood went on to win the set 25-17. Jefferson would battle back in the second set to win 25-21. Ashley Thomas would later get the serve back for Edgewood with an ace. JV Warriors defeat Falcons BY BYRON C. WESSELL Gazette Newspapers ASHTABULA – The Edgewood Warriors junior varsity volleyball team hosted the Jefferson Falcons on Thursday, Sept. 8. Edgewood won the first set 25-13. Edgewood was able to take a 4-2 lead in the first set when Anna Applebee set Judith Silvieus up for a kill. Edgewood then took a commanding lead at 14-4 behind six service points by Silvieus. Jaime Rogers had several nice hits in the opening set for the Warriors. Raquel Mook made a nice play for the Falcons to make it 23-8 at the time and Hayley Allen picked up a big spike at 24-10. However, it was too little too late as Courtney Didonato ended the first set with a kill for the Warriors. Jefferson would battle back to win the second set with a score of 25-13, this time in their favor. Jefferson would get good serving streaks from both Bailey Beckwith and Amanda Krause to open up the second set. Hayley Allen and McKenzie Wilber each made several key plays for Jefferson in the second set. Krause also picked up a big kill to go with a great one handed save to help Jefferson lead 23-8 and 24-9. Ashten Noce would pick up an ace serve for the Warriors, making it 24-11, but Jefferson would go on to win the set 25-13. Edgewood would go on to win the decisive third set with a score of 25-15. The opening point in the third set was one of the longest volleys on the evening with Raquel Mook and Brittany Lefik each picking up a pair of digs for their respective teams. Jasmine Schiedel made back-to-back nice plays for the Warriors and Silvieus also had a pair of nice plays for the Warriors. The game would be tied up at 9-9, 11-11 and 12-12 before Edgewood pulled away for good at 13-12. Edgewood would go on to win the set and the match 25-15.

Lakeside Dragons expects success
Lady Spartans tennis preview
BY BYRON C. WESSELL Gazette Newspapers
CONNEAUT – Conneaut tennis coach Doug Hedrick held his second annual tennis camp in July for kids in 4th-8th grades. This month, the fall season begins for his Lady Spartans as Hedrick begins his fourth season at the helm. “We have some experience coming back with a lot of juniors. It is time for them to play up to potential, they have been in the program since ninth grade. It is time to translate into wins. We can’t use the excuse of being a young program. It is time to compete at a high level,” Hedrick said. Returning for the Spartans are: Alyssa Andes, Brooke Sanford, Autumn Glasser, Carissa Nardo, Sarah Herrmann, Ericka Nickels, Melody Hazeltine, Brinda Patel, Carly Kay, Megan Callahan, Kristy Anderson, Aly Langford and Rebecca Tisdale.
SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP - The Lakeside Dragons golf team looks to improve upon last years season where the majority of the team thinks they can perform better. The Dragons under Head Coach Jim Hood are returning four letter winners from a year ago in Kevin Acierno, Mike Andes, Adam Suckel and Anthony DeGeorge. “I believe that we can play better than we did last year,” Acierno says. The Dragons are out on the links for four to five hours a day tuning their golf game. “Practice doesn’t make perfect, but perfect practice makes perfect,” Acierno used a quote he heard somewhere along the way. Andes also expects a better season this year for the Dragons. “I’m looking forward to a PAC Championship. We have a better chance this year of getting to the top,” Andes said. “It’s not how you drive, it’s how you arrive,” Andes added trying to match quotes with Acierno much like he tries to match his score on the golf course. The Dragons lost three big pieces from a year ago in Justin Shinault, Bryan Schlaich and Alex Bader. Bader and Schlaich are currently members of the Walsh golf team. Despite those loses, Lakeside has gotten off to a nice start this year with a record of 7-1 as of Tuesday, August 30. The Dragons are also 4-1 in the PAC. The Dragons varsity golf starters consist of: Andes, Acierno, Suckel, y DeGoeorge, Colton Mukina and Ryan Appleby. The Dragons loss three seniors from a year ago, but Andes and Acierno look to step up this year as seniors. “It feels good to be my last year of high school, but I’m not glad it will be my last golf season,” Andes said on being a senior. Andes, Acierrno and Suckel all shot under 40 during a recent match against Geneva. The Dragons were able to win by shooting a 161 compared to Geneva’s 175.

Lakeside Dragons girls’ golf wants to build on last year BY BYRON C. WESSELL Gazette Newspapers SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP - The Lakeside Dragons golf team under Head Coach Matt Heath look to build upon their 15-6 season a year ago. The Dragons also finished 12-6 in the PAC. The Dragons believe they can do even better in the PAC this year but face a tough Willoughby South team. The Dragons will have four seniors this year in Krista Johnston, Paige Upole, Hannah Licate and Koree Runyan. Johnston and Upole lead the Dragons a year ago along and junior Lyndsey Wheeler will also be counted on as a key contributor. “I’m looking forward to my senior season in golf and I want to try and pick-up where it ended last year,” Johnston said on being a senior. “We want to do better as a team this year,” Upole said. “I’m looking forward to moving on and having good memories,” Upole added on being a senior. Team chemistry plays a pivotal role in any teams’ success and the Lakeside Dragons believe they have that. “I look forward to having a good time with all the girls on the team because we all get a long,” Runyan said on being a senior. The Dragons are currently 6-2 overall with a 2-2 record in the PAC after a match against South. South shot a 174, while Lakeside finished with a 205. Johnston led the way for the Dragons shooting a 44. Upole finished with a 52 and Runyan was right behind her with a 52. Wheeler chipped in a 56 for the final tally, while Licate finished with a 61.

Streaks hold on for victory BY ALLAN MONONEN Gazette Newspapers CONNEAUT - In a rematch of the first volleyball game of the season, Madison traveled to Conneaut. In a long, competitive match, the Streaks held on for the victory, winning game five 15-12 and avenging their loss to Conneaut in the first faceoff. The teams traded wins in the first four games, Madison winning game one, 25-12, Conneaut returning the favor in game two, 25-12. Both teams battled, diving to dig the ball off the floor, over head saves outof-bounds, taking balls off the net and returning them. Madison won game three, 25-21 then Conneaut evened the score 25-19. Neither team could move ahead by more than 4 or 5 points. Teams exchanged short runs that kept the score close and each team made mistakes that kept them from moving too far ahead.

“One of our strengths with this team is our serving. We went through some short stretches where we didn’t make good decisions with placing the ball but I would have to say that serving problems were the biggest culprit tonight. You have to make teams earn their points and we had too many serves into the net and too many deflections go against us tonight,” Conneaut Coach Paul Stofan commented. “Madison did a nice job keeping the ball alive as well we we mishit the ball a few times after they kept it alive. When you make mistakes that put you behind the eight ball, it is tough to come back, you’re always climbing uphill and we didn’t get it done,” Stofan added. In the decisive game five, Haley Dake served Madison to a 6-3 advantage. Then Riley Riehl followed after two sides-out and served her team to a 95 lead. Lydia Coccitto then took serve for the Spartans and brought the team back to 8-

Riehl pulled her team back to a 12-10 lead and then Ashley Hixon ended the contest with the last four serving points to give the Streaks the 15-11 game victory and the match. “We worked really hard

in practice Friday. I’m proud of how the the girls came in tonight with an attitude to prove to themselves and our fans that they are a good team.We were more aggressive and more focussed and after losing to Conneaut earlier,we knew what we had to do to win and we did it,” Madison Coach Brynn Ryan said. Conneaut slips to 3-2, Madison improves to 2-3, 03, PAC. “It is difficult at times when you’re playing an independent schedule. Maintaining a sharp focus isn’t easy. I feel that motivation for us should come from within each girl when they put on that shirt with the school name on it. You should use that as motivation, to play each match to get sharper as a team and you play to strengthen fundamentals. We had a few down times tonight that hurt but I am really proud of the effort the girls are putting out on the court. They work hard and I feel really good about that,” Stofan concluded. In the JV contest, Madison won both games by the same score, 25-13.

CONNEAUT - The first game of a home and home girls soccer series was played Thursday at Municipal stadium. In a physical contest, the girls bumped each other up and down the field and the game ended in a 1-1 draw. Host Conneaut dominated the first half, with several shots on goal but Dragon keeper Carly Shumaker was up to the challenge and stopped all shots. “We had a lot of chances in the first half, I don’t
think we were shooting hard enough,” Spartan Coach Casey Bacha commmented. At the beginning of the second half, the Spartans gained control in the Dragon end. Kayla Brennan passed up to Jessica Lynch who booted the ball past Shumaker into the right corner of the net, 1-0, Conneaut with 38 minutes of the half. Much time remained and two minutes later, the Dragons were awarded a penalty kick. Zoe Campbell rocketed the ball at the net but it hit
the top crossbar and goalie Brenna Nelson was able to pounce on the rebound; saved by the crossbar at 36 minutes. That lead was shortlived as four minutes later, Ashley Martin dribbled around Conneaut’s left side and booted the ball past Nelson into the far right corner of the net,1-1, at 32 minutes. Lakeside controlled the ball in Spartan territory for most of the half, but the Conneaut defense and goalie Nelson stopped all attempts on goal. Conneaut mounted a last minute at-
tack on the Dragon end but keeper Shumaker ended those threats. “Overall we played well, we came out played agressively. We will play them again in two weeks at home,” Dragons coach Ed Paneto said. Lakeside is now 3-2-1 on the season. “Our defense played really well. As a team we’ve made a lot of progress from where we started. It is a big difference from our first game, the girls are working hard,” Bacha added. Conneaut is now 2-4-1 for the season.

but Riverside’s goal keeper Adam Graycar came out of the box to scoop up the ball. The first half ended with Geneva up 1-0. Robles picked up an easy save to start the second half for Geneva. Riverside then missed on a great opportunity when Pat Lyons passed it to a wide open Luke Venaleck, who pulled up and allowed the Geneva defenders to kick the ball away. Geneva’s Joey Roney had a corner kick opportunity, but the Eagles were unable to head it in. Riverside then had a Matt
Liberatore shot go wide left and Dan Clifford also had a scoring attempt. Mike Gundling later had one of the hardest kicks of the night stopped for a save. Dario Blazevic then missed wide right for Riverside who held the ball the majority of the second half. Tyler Hobel would have a shot on goal for Geneva, but failed to connect. Riverside then charged hard as Clifford and Gundling looked to score. However, Santos came out of the box to pick up the ball for the Eagles. Lozano then had a scoring chance for Geneva,
but missed. Riverside would tie the game when Liberatore missed wide right and Venaleck was there with a rebound shot to tie the game. Santos tried to get a leg on the ball, but was unable to prevent it from going in. After tying the game Riverside appeared to have all the momentum.
