WESSELL Gazette Newspapers The Mentor Cardinals girls cross country team finished second in the Division I District Cross Country meet held at Lakeland Community College. Freshmen Kinsey Robinson led the Cardinals finishing second in the race with a time of 20:35.2 Mentor also got strong showings from Jenny Mulhall, Sara Scinto, Julia Lowe and Nicole Rizzo who all finished in the top twenty. moved onto regionals and they were Chardon (49), Mentor (56), Shaker Heights (62), Mayfield (66) and Madison (176). Madison captured a fifth place finish thanks in large part to Annette Brickman and Taylor Cline finishing 29th and 30th respectively for the Blue Streaks. Also, helping Madison advance were Katarina Funk, Samantha Martin and Erin Hord. Rounding out the top ten were Riverside (182), Lakeside (204), Geneva (217), South (229) and North (281). Kristen Beres narrowly missed out for the Dragons

finishing 21st overall with a time of 22:17.31. Dajana Tomicic was the top runner for South finishing 33rd. Karen Barrientos finished 36th overall for Lakeside. Adrea Ayres finished 38th for North. BOARDMAN – The Jefferson Falcons boys’ cross country team will be advancing to the state meet after qualifying fourth at regionals. The Falcons finished fourth out of 16 teams with a team score of 152. The Perry Pirates also qualified for state by finishing third overall with a team score of 149. The Falcons knew going into the race from checking milesplit.com that based on previous scores the team would finish anywhere between fourth and sixth place if they ran the races they were suppose to. While the times were down due to the muddy course, the places were right where they needed to be. With so much commotion going on and 21 runners running individual races it was hard for Jefferson to figure out if they were going to make it. However, in the end they had a comfortable cushion over fifth place Lakeview who finished with a team score of 174.

The Division II boys’ race was the fifth race of the day and even in the morning walk through the course was filled with mud. By the time the runners ran their race the course was pretty much a disaster. Groups of two and three runners occasionally would slip and lose their balance. However, Dave Chase ran strong throughout the entire match navigating the course with both wide and tight turns to stay on his feet. Chase would finish third overall in the race for the Falcons and that in large part helped Jefferson take fourth overall. Chase finished with a time of 18:11.99. “He was running with so much confidence as a result of winning districts a week ago,” Jefferson’s Head Coach John Patterson said. Adam Chase also helped the Falcons and narrowly missed out qualifying individually with a 22nd place finish. The Falcons also got a great showing from freshman Mathew Kantor who placed the highest he has all season by finishing 40th

overall. Andrew Picard also had his best place for the Falcons as he placed 71st. Rounding out the scoring for the Falcons was Daran Woodin with a 73rd place finish. “It’s a thrill for me to work with such dedicated young men,” Coach Patterson said. The last time the Falcons qualified for the state

meet was in 2002 where they finished third. The Perry Pirates finished three points ahead of the Falcons and will be joining them at the state meet held at National Trail Raceway in Hebron. The Pirates were led by a 15th place finish by Dustin Gilbert with a time of

Mentor wins district final BY BILL LEVY Gazette Newspapers MENTOR - It may have not come as easily as many people expected but the Mentor girl’s soccer team was victorious in their District I final showdown against Cleveland Heights by a score of 3-1 at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium on October 29. Amber Seaman scored two goals for Mentor while Courtney Schutz added the other one. This was a rematch of these two schools who met earlier in the regular season. Mentor (13-3-3) is scheduled to travel to

Twinsburg on November 2 to play the Berea/ Strongsville winner. “It (today) was a really tough game,” said Schutz. “We beat them 7-0 earlier. They have improved so much.” After controlling the pace in the early part of the game, Mentor took a 1-0 lead on Seaman’s nifty strike from about 25 yards out on the left side, which found the upper right side of the goal. “It was a gorgeous goal,” said Cardinals coach Meaghan Howell. Though Mentor still controlled the tempo for the majority of the second half, Heights did tie the score

with 13:04 left in the game. Seaman however was able to give Mentor the lead for good, less than a minute later, when her left-footed shot found the back of the net with 12:33 remaining. “I knew we needed one (goal),” Seaman said. “We couldn’t get down.” That was something that did not go unnoticed to Howell. “We could have panicked,” she said. Shortly after a nice save by Mentor goalkeeper Amanda Pratt, Schutz gave the Cardinals an insurance goal, with a little over seven minutes left in the contest when she made a series of spectacular moves

after gaining possession of the ball and was able to connect on a breakaway. For the Cardinals, they now set their sites on the Regionals, which are a big part of the rogram’s history, though will be the first time this current group of players are participants. For a team hat beat their previous two opponents in the Districts by a 14-0 margin. Howell feels their clash with Heights will serve them well. “I was so impressed with them” she said. “They made some changes (since when they played efore). It was good to have a very competitive game. It was needed.”

BY BYRON C. WESSELL Gazette Newspapers MADISON – The Madison Joint Recreation District held a recent meeting on Thursday, Oct. 27 at the Madison Village Hall. One of the issues on hand was the new Youth Football Subcommittee which will be made up of: John Dragas, Chad Burgard and Walt Alley. The MJRD recently sent a proposal to help oversee the Madison Youth Football League due to problems in the league this year. A letter from the MYFL was entered onto record during the meeting. The letter stated that the MYFL would like to decline the MJRD plan to oversee the MYFL. Part of the letter stated: “MYFL would like to respectfully decline MJRD offer for complete control of MYFL. We will be implementing several of MJRD suggestions, and we agree that better communication between Parents and MYFL Community is a must and MYFL is taking steps to improve this.” The Madison Youth Football League usually holds its meetings the first Monday of the month at the Township Police Department. There are currently board positions open for interested parents and community members. The MYFL would also like interested parties to know that they are compiling a new email list to keep everyone better informed on the MYFL community. To join the email list please email Mike Cosper at msbdcasper@yahoo.com. MYFL will also be starting a new website with MYFL information and news available to everyone. “MYFL has taken complaints to heart this year and MYFL will work on resolving the issues and making next year even better,” according to the letter written by MYFL Board Member Mike Cosper. The next step as far as the Madison Joint Recreation District is concerned is that they will still be looking into matters and have the new subcommittee. However, the MJRD maintains that it does not want to completely run a football league, but would advise a board of parents interested in starting a new league if there are enough interested parties.

Spartans hold off Warriors

BY BYRON C. WESSELL Gazette Newspapers

BY ALLAN MONONEN Gazette Newspapers ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP - The local football season ended with the neighborhood rivalry with Conneaut at Edgewood. The hosts won the first half but the Spartans won the second and held on for the triumph, 30-28. Coach Rocco Dobran earned his first win as a head coach at Conneaut but he was quick to give credit. “This night was about seniors, seniors, seniors,” he said. “Tyler Rose ran the ball three times when we were trying to run out the clock and got three first downs when they knew we were trying to secure the win. He held on the ball with both so he wouldn’t fumble. Joey Brennan kicked the game winning field goal and Brandon Burdine returned the interception all the way to the end zone. I thought he would be down at the 35.” As befitting the rivalry, the game was well played, hard hitting and very competitve. Each team had its runs to the lead. In the first quarter, the teams exchanged possessions. On the next Warrior series the Spartan D forced the host deep into their own zone, forcing a Warrior punt. Starting the series at the E 37, Conneaut marched downfield, with QB Aaron Bowers going up the middle for the final yards. Joey Brennan kicked the first of his three extra points and the Spartans had the initial advantage,7-0. The Spartan defense again held but the punt was fumbled and recovered near midfield by the Warriors. On the first play, QB Lou Wisnyai went left on an option, broke through and sped 42 yards to the end zone. Zach Williamson added the first of his three points after and it was a new game, 7-7. On Edgewood’s next series, Wisnyai hit receiver Kevin Joslin on a short slant for another TD, 14-7. Turnovers have been a pain for the Spartans this year. A second fumble was recovered by the Warriors in their zone. Striking quickly, a perfect pass over the middle to Joslin went 70 yards for the TD, 21-7. As it seemed the momentum had shifted to the Warriors, the Spartans fought back. With the offense sputtering near midfield, the visitors faced a fourth and five. As Aaron Bowers went back to punt, instead he took the snap up the middle to the Warrior 34 and a first down. Dvyan Huffman added another first down. Three plays later Bowers powered up the middle for

the TD with 39 seconds left before halftime, cutting the gap to 21-14. Bowers played QB on running plays, soph Sam Distelrath was QB on pass plays. Conneaut had success running up the middle; spreadin five receivers wide, the middle was open. “They left some gaps up the middle wide open, I ran hard and tried to run people over. We just went right up the gut, they left the middle wide open. It was a great win for our team but it was a total team effort,” Bowers noted. Edgewood coach Dom Iarocci commented,” we may have rested on our laurels when we were up 217, and didn’t put them away when we had the lead. That fake punt was a big play,” Edgewood Coach Dom Iarocci said. After the intermission, each defense forced a punt. After the Warrior kick, Conneaut began their series on the host’s 35. On the first play, Huffman went in motion out of the spread, took the handoff around right end and out raced the defense to the end zone. Now it was a new game, 2121. The Spartan D, stout all night, then forced another Warrior punt. Conneaut stacked ten men near the line, runs up the middle hit a brick wall. The ends did a fine job of stringing out any running play outside and prevented Edgewood speedster Riis Smith from turning the corner and finding running room. As the third period wound down, the visitors fielded the punt near midfield and began the drive downfield. With Huffman and Bowers running, QB Sam Distelrath found Tyler Rose with a slant deep into Warrior territory. The Warrior D kept the Spartans out of the end zone at their five, but then Joey Brennan split the uprights with a field goal for the 24-21 advantage at 6:24

of the fourth quarter. “Jackson Distelrath, the holder, said,’no pressure’. I kicked it and was so happy, it was one of the biggest moments of my sports history,” Brennan commented. Then another big play occurred. On Edgewood’s possession, QB Wisnyai tried to find a receiver on a slant route left, but linebacker Brandon Burdine jumped in front, took the ball and set sail down the south sideline. Eluding several tackle attempts and refusing to go down, Burdine raced to the end zone for a insurance TD. The two point conversion was not successful but the Spartans had the lead, 3021. “I saw the guy coming and played it perfectly. I went down the sideline, and Tyler Cox laid down a perfect block, I jumped over him. The D line had great pressure and the D backs had good coverage downfield. It was a great way to end the the season,” Burdine described his big play. True Warriors never quit. On the kickoff, Riis Smith took the ball back to midfield. On the first play QB Wisnyai found Kevin Joslin speeding down the sideline and hit him with a pass in stride. Joslin cruised into the end zone and in ten seconds, the Spartans’ nine point lead had shrunk to two, 30-28. Conneaut received the kickoff and kept the ball on the ground to eat up the last four minutes. First down runs by Tyler Rose kept the clock running. When the Warriors had used their last timeout, Sam Distelrath took a knee and ran off the final seconds, game over. “We didn’t run the ball well, he (Dobran) had ten men in the box and it made it difficult to get any sort of running game going. Everything we did was with our passing game. Obviously, it didn’t end like we

would have liked, but this is a neighborhood rivalry and both teams played extremely well,” Iarocci summed up. Statistically speaking, Aaron Bowers ran 12 times for 62 yards and 2 TDs. Dvyan Huffman had 12 carries for 62 and a score. Tyler Rose carried seven times for 34. Sam Distelrath had five carries for two yards and RJ Nelson added two totes for three. For the Warriors: Riis Smith was held to 13 carries for 31 yards by the Spartan D. Lou Wisnyai had 8 carries for 60 yards and a TD. Jeff Imbrogno added 7 rushes for 15 and Tyler Legere was 2-4 yards. In the air attack, Spartan Sam Distelrath had four completions in ten attempts for 54 yards. Aaron Bowers completed one pass in two attempts for nine yards. The Warriors air game was very productive. Lou Wisnyai completed five passes of 17 attempts for 152 yards and 3 TDs. He also threw 2 INTs. Receivers were: Tyler Rose with three catches for 48; Nick Blood , 1-3, Aaron Bowers, 1-12. Kevin Joslin had an outstanding game for the Warriors with four catches for 144 yards and 3 TDs. Anthony Magda had one catch for 8. Bowers and Burdine had interceptions for the Spartans. Conneaut fumbled three times and lost two, both leading to Edgewood scores. The Warriors fumbled once and Conneaut recovered. The season ends with Conneaut at 1-9 and Edgewood at 2-8 Each team will lose about a dozen seniors but with many freshmen and sophomores gaining varsity playing time on each team, next year looks brighter. Thus ends the fall campaign for all sports.

Madison would answer scoring one more time before half time as Andy Karlson connected with Cieslinski for a 29-yard touchdown. The Blue Streaks would continue the scoring parade in the second half as the defense got on the scoreboard. Skerkavich recovered a fumble and took it 16-yards for the score. Karlson then threw for his second touchdown of the game this time a nine-yard pass to O’Bryan. Riverside would try to fight back in the fourth quarter as they scored a pair of touchdowns. Bilal scored his second touchdown of the game on a six-yard run. Riverside then had a defensive touchdown of their own as Matt Miller scored on a 33-yard fumble recovery. The Blue Streaks would score the final touchdown of the game as Nick Knight scored on a 21-yard run, making the final score 59-21. Karlson finished the game 14 for 15 passing for 215 yards and two touchdowns. The Blue Streaks had five interceptions in the game two by O’Bryan, while March; Mason Kensinger, and Cieslinksi each had one. The Madison Blue Streaks finished 8-2 on the year and will advance to Division II Regional Quarterfinal.

Rebels defeat Cardinals advance to finals North Rangers BY BILL LEVY Gazette Newspapers

MENTOR - Any disadvantages that the Mentor High girl’s soccer team has by playing in the Northeast Ohio Conference Valley (NOC), one of the top conferences in the state, have seemed to be erased during the Division I Euclid District playoffs. After beating Lakeside 9-0 in their first game of the tournament, the top seeded Cardinals followed up by beating Riverside, the champions of the Premier Athletic Conference 5-0 on October 26 at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium. With the win, Mentor (12-3-3) is slated to take on Cleveland Heights in the finals. Kayla Gabor and Amber Seaman had two goals while Amanda Grebenc

had one. Gabor also had two assists in the game. Payton Lewis had two assists as well and Haley Vinborg assisted on the last goal. This being Mentor’s first season in the NOC, head coach Meagan Howell said some of their league games are helping the Cardinals this postseason. “That helps a ton,” she said. “They have some of the best teams in the area.” Seaman agreed. “It helped a lot,” she added. “We are confident.” Mentor looked confident all game en route to their victory over Riverside (9-34). They got on the board about 18 minutes into the contest when Gabor made a nice move from about 15 yards from the goal after receiving a pass from Lewis to sneak a shot by Beavers’ goalie Meghan Lyden, who

was a large part of Riverside’s defense that only allowed .47 goals a game this season entering their match-up against Mentor. While controlling possession virtually all half, Mentor added their second goal approximately ten minutes later when Gabor attempted a neat shot with her back facing the goal that found Seaman, who was streaking down the right side and able to score to give Mentor a 2-0 lead. “That was a total team effort,” said Seaman. “We made a bunch of passes to get in position. Kayla took the shot and I just happened to be there to put it in.” The Cardinals continued their control of the game in the second half as Seaman, with a left footed

shot, found the back of the net with under three minutes in to gave her team a commanding 3-0 lead. “We have come together as a team,” said Seaman. “It is all of us - from the defense to the forwards.” Riverside coach Mark Mallon is convinced. “They were better than us,” he said. “They were faster, stronger and more technical.” Still though, the Beavers’ first year coach could not help but be proud of his team which does not have any seniors. “This was my first year,” he said. “Last year they went 7-6-3. We are a young team. They exceeded all of my expectations. We probably squeezed a couple extra games out of this season. It will help in the future. It is tough though to end this way.”

Mentor falls to Shaker Heights BY BILL LEVY Gazette Newspapers MENTOR - The Mentor High School boy’s soccer team’s season-ending 2-0 defeat to Shaker Heights in a Division I Euclid District semifinal clash on October 24 looked all too familiar to Head Coach Brady Dean. Despite controlling possession for most of the game, the Cardinals (8-9) were not able to get on the scoreboard. The Red Raiders scored their first goal with 14:55 left in the first half. They then added their second goal with under one minute left in the game when Mentor was in a full attack mode. The Cardinals had several scoring chances as Colin Eedy’s shot near the end of the first half hit the post. Chris Jordan also had a breakaway late in the second half where he was interfered with. The official determined that this happened outside the goalie box so he was awarded a free kick and not a penalty kick. His kick narrowly missed Nikhil Shah who was in a good position to score. Jacob Lombardo and Aaron Harden also had opportunities to get good shots on goal. “This was how the whole season has gone,” Dean said. “We have controlled possession on a lot of teams. We did what we were supposed to. They are bigger and faster than us, but we still controlled possession. It is hard when your leading scorer has nine goals in 18 games. We weren’t able to finish.”

Geneva Eagles fall to Lions BY BYRON C. WESSELL Gazette Newspapers JEFFERSON – There was plenty of action in the opening game of the Geneva Eagles against Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin volleyball game in the Division II District semifinal. The two teams would continue to battle throughout the match with NDCL winning three games to one. NDCL took the opening game 25-18 and went on to win 25-18, 17-25, 25-17, 25-23. Geneva started strong as Katie Beacom picked up a dig on the opening point and Chelsea Scafuro finished it with a kill. However, Stephanie Williams answered for NDCL with a kill of her own. The Lions then went up 3-1 behind an ace from Erica Vella and a Lauren Beck tip-in. The Eagles would battle back to tie the game at 3-3 and 4-4 behind a block and a kill by Veronica Clutter. The game would then be tied three more times at 6-6 (Scafuro kill), 8-8 (Williams kill) and

9-9 (Cassie Kuchta kill). The Lions then went up big at 17-11 behind plays from Beck, Williams and Kuchta. The Eagles tried to battle back as Thomas and Scafuro each had a block and a kill a piece, but the Lions held on to win the first game 25-18. The second game was a different story for the Eagles after going down 02 they battled back to 5-2 behind an ace serve from Scafuro. The Eagles extended their lead to 11-5 behind four service points by Clutter. Geneva would get another string of service points by Beacom to go up 18-7. NDCL tried to fight back behind a pair of kills by Williams, who also served for four straight points, but Geneva held on to win 25-17. The Lions had the hot serve in the third game as Chrissy Grcar served for eight points to put them up 15-6. NDCL would go on to win the third game 25-17. The final game was just as intense as the rest of the match as the Lions edged

out the Eagles 25-23. The Eagles would go ahead 105 behind five service points by Clutter. However, the Lions would battle back behind a pair of kills by Williams and one by Vella to cut the lead to 11-9. Kuchta then picked up four kills during the middle portion of the game to put the

Lions up 16-15. Lindsay Laurello would then serve five points for the Eagles to give them a 21-16 lead. Kuchta would again help the Lions come back with four service points of her own. Williams then picked up two more kills down the stretch to give the Lions a 25-23 win.
