Page 1

The two years of absences are like a world away, yet we still keep on cultivating our soil and our minds, not to get slayed.

序言

01

After the social movement and the sudden outbreak of the epidemic, the world seems to be different or we see our world from a different broader perspective. While fighting, we must also uphold the basics of life. This year’s film festival selected films from the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, North Macedonia, and other places. The shots range from cultural movements such as veganism and food waste problems to civil protests on social aspects, and to the lives of beekeepers in remote small towns. They all happen or have always been happening in reflecting the connections between the distressed reality and the yearned nirvana. Let us continue to expand our imaginations at these nights; Let our dialogues about life, images, agriculture, food, and more to be continued through the screenings, concerts, markets, and snack parties.

Foreword

United Kingdom

Why could they eat cow ?

It’s 2067, the U.K. is vegan. Eating meat isn't technically a crime, yet the older generations are suffering the guilt of their carnivorous past, and would even cry in shame just by naming the cheese they’ve eaten before. On the other side, young people are sitting joyfully on the grassland under the dreamy light; they wonder, almost in tears, “Why would they eat a cow?”. Wait, is the director mocking vegans, or is the vegan utopia too ideal to bear? Director Simon Amstell is a British comedian, screenwriter, and director. With his witty and humorous, and taking the form of mockumentary, the director attempts to project how vegetarianism changed from being mocked in the 40s to the only truth in 2067. Try holding your judgement and join the director in this imaginary epic between the vegans and the carnists.

No matter how ridiculous it is, the problem of food waste and garbage are morphing into a set of numbers to which people respond indifferently. The couple documentary makers and food lovers refused to accept their fate. "We all love food, so how could we possibly be throwing nearly 50% of it into the trash? ", they decided to embark on a sixmonth experiment: eating only discarded food that others don't want. Filming scenes such as endless perfectly good peaches in the garage trucks destined for the landfill, and revealing the devastating global consequences of our obsession with “best before” dates and perfectly presented products, the directors brought forward farmers, retailers, and food activists, and at the same time got glimpses of how crazy the food waste throughout the whole system - from farm to store to home. So are freegan only picking leftover foods, yes and no and more. The film has won multiple film festival awards: the Leo Awards for Best Documentary, Best Documentary Director, and Best Documentary Original Score.

Are they all just green lies ?

There is a sustainable version of the notorious palm oil? The leading coal-burning power plant also started to shift to wind power generation? Wait, Are they all just green lies? The innocent-looking director travels around the world with the shrewd anti-green washing expert, to find out the truth behind these green lies. How do you understand a “forest” that has been burnt down to ashes? Ever participated in the International Palm Oil Conference and experienced the extravagant speeches given by the cooperates? How does it feel to drive a state-of-the-art eco-friendly electric car in the middle of the open-pit coal mine in Garzweiler, Germany, while the air is full of coal dust? Like an eco-version road movie, the two stopped here and there to inquire and debate on the so-called green products along the way. In the end, can they, or we, find the solution to a sustainable life?

The United States Climate Central once pointed out that if the global temperature rises by 2 degrees relative to the pre-industrial revolution, the Hong Kong airport and the Mai Po nature reserve area will be submerged. And if it rises by another 2 degrees, both sides of the Victoria Harbour and Mong Kok will be underwater. If the last screening about food waste was too polite and ineffective in saving the planet, how about a dosage of confrontation against fossil fuels industries, the dirty energy? For one and a half years, the director featured the climate activist Ken Ward, and filmed his "radical" actions repeatedly, including breaking into the tar sands oil transportation facility, and blockading t he railroad tracks with a group of activists. The scene of running forward together holding the iron frame, for a moment, it really resembles an “outing”. Is it true that the "outing" went boldly forward and unreserved? The film is interspersed with series disobedience actions, lawsuits in consequence of the law-breaking actions, and Ward’s personal struggles with his family on his moral callings. "He is not doing it or himself, for his son, but for the world and the future generations," the Ward’s lawyer said. Does the lawyer’s defense resonate what many Hong Kongers aspire these days, beyond technical adjudications by the court?

What and how we are going to eat as food if there’s no more seed on the earth? Take the example of our local Yeun Long jasmine rice, which is known for its high quality and aroma, had dwindled and disappeared since the 1960s. In fact, in the last century, 94% of the global seed varieties have been lost. At the same time there are people going into the woods, looking for the uncommercialised seeds in the coco family; people who spend their nights, gazing and admiring their bags of seeds in weird patterns and markings as if they are jewels. These “Noahs” unanimously state out the same story of our human existence - The story of our seeds is a defining story of our time: our past and our future. Yet in our modern world, biotech chemical companies have long been in control of global seed markets with their genetically modified monocultures, where patented Hybrid seeds that are difficult to replant were disturbed all over the world. These industries used up Hawaiian farmlands for testing, spraying poisonous fog every night. And as result, people woke up with their bloodedsoaked pillow, leaving both the lives of people and seeds almost ceased. Besides protesting all over the world on the streets to fight for the control of our food, how else would these conscious people resist? Under the totalitarian power, free will could be burst into countless imaginations and actions. The film has won multiple film festival awards, including best documentary, best photography, and etc.

Following the buzzing sound, Hatidze walked along the cliff, slowly removing the rocks from the loosened pile, and inside found the nest of life. Hatidze is one of Europe’s last wild beekeepers, who uses ancient harvesting wild honey methods. Living as the last family in an abandoned Bekirlija, a city with no electricity, running water or roads, she looks after her ailing mother and sells wild honey at the market in the capital of North Macedonia. Days were normal in Bekirlija, but one day, a nomadic family of nine passed by and lived here temporarily. She taught the family how to harvest wild honey and keep bees. The little boy watched her split the honey-stained nest cake in half, remembering her mantra clearly: half for me and half for you (bees). The two families became friends, until the "half" principle was interrupted by the father, and the relationship between the people and the bee swarm changed drastically. Can life and nature return to its origin? Are human beings and nature coexisting or perishing? Issues such as ecological balance, natural resource extraction, and materialism can all be seen from Hatidze’s life. The director specifically pointed out on the website, "The honey crisis in the movie reveals the risk of ignoring biodiversity." After three years of shooting and one year of editing, the film presents itself as a feature film. It is also the first in history to have been shortlisted for both the best documentary and the best international film awards.
