The SouthWest Chat

Erin Taormino & Jittery

elcome to the November Issue of SouthWest Horse Trader. is packed with World and Futurity results. The next issue continues our World & Futurity coverage and includes extra distribution at Fort Worth and Oklahoma City shows. While NRCHA ran another fantastic Snaffle Bit Futurity, it wasn’t without controversy. In the Open Hackamore Finals a Yellowstone banner cost quite a few riders their run for the title. How a non-title sponsor got wall space after the start of the show and premier wall space is subject of a few conversations. Another question was who authorized the filming of the Hackamore finals for a television show? While everyone is thanking Taylor Sheridan for his generosity, I want to know how did this get approved? Congratulations to Erin Taormino and Jittery who despite the challenges added to this class, won it! Unfortunately all of the horses in the class will have the same earnings for this class as she earned if you go by the posted results. So the last place horse who scored a zero had the same boost to his lifetime earnings as Taormino. Just some food for thought. Here’s the press release: On Wednesday, October 21, Taylor Sheridan, co-creator and producer of Yellowstone, used the Open Hackamore Finals as a chance to capture footage for use in his Paramount Network hit television series. It became apparent during the first set of Open Hackamore Finals that an arena sign placed by the film crew was presenting a significant distraction for the horses. After concurring with NRCHA leadership, Taylor offered to pay each of the 19 Open Hackamore finalists $13,244—the same amount that was awarded for first place. Sheridan acknowledged the intrusion and wished to make the best of the unfortunate situation for each worthy finalist. Prizes and placings were still awarded by virtue of each horse’s score. “The banner that was placed in the arena by Taylor’s crew was opportune for Yellowstone, but unfortunately not for the horses showing. The NRCHA appreciates Taylor’s willingness

to acknowledge what happened and make amends to the contestants and owners,” said NRCHA President Corey Cushing. In light of much speculation on social media surrounding this incident, the NRCHA wishes to assure the public that NRCHA show management, staff and leaders worked quickly and diligently on a resolution that was in the best interest of all 19 Open Hackamore Finals horses, as well as the owners and riders who were directly impacted. If you are a cow horse fan, then you have seen NRCHA premier events in person or on our webcasts and understand the caliber of finals NRCHA always strive to produce. The Open Hackamore Finals is a prestigious title within the industry that is very important to us, as well as to our fans. Sheridan’s generosity and swiftness in making the best of an unforeseen situation is greatly appreciated.

The leaderboard was stacked as Open finals fence work began. Madeleine Claire Fountain’s Ricato Suave (Metallic Cat x Hip Hip Sue Rey x Dual Rey) and Clay Volmer held down the No. 1 spot with a 440.5 (223 herd/ 217.5 rein), but Sarah Dawson and both of the great horses she made the finals on were hot on his heels. Dawson ranked second, trailing by one point, with Smart Chic An Tari (219 herd/ 220 rein) owned by Aaron Ranch. She was sitting third on Sheri Jamieson’s mare Selvarey (216 herd/ 220.5 rein) with a 436.5. Last out in the second set it was SnapDragons (Gunnatrashya x Catnaps x High Brow Cat), ridden by Zane Davis for Shane Law, that took command of the lead with a scalding 222 down the fence and the resulting 656.5 composite (215.5 herd/ 219 rein). Ricato Suave (Metallic Cat x Hip Hip Sue Rey x Dual Rey) and Volmer were first up in the third set, posting a 216 to join SnapDragons and Davis at the top of the leaderboard with a 656.5. No. 26 of 28 in the draw, it was Dawson and Selvarey who rose to the challenge, executing their fence run to perfection. Selvarey and Dawson were rewarded with a score of 224 by the judges. Dawson’s resulting 660 composite on Selvarey cinched the 2020 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity championship by a three and one half point margin for earnings of $125,000. SnapDragons and Davis shared the reserve championship with Ricato Suave and

Back in the late 70’s, I was in College at Fresno State College (now Cal State University-Fresno). I was always riding, roping, and running barrels. Our Bulldogger Rodeo Team traveled on the weekends to Rodeos in Nevada, California, and all over Arizona in our Region. I remember having anxiety about what I would do after College Rodeo. I became a member of the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (Girls Rodeo Association back then) in 1977 hoping to continue a rodeo career of some kind. Then, luck would have it and the WPRA got a great offer from Long Beach, California to host the Women’s Pro Rodeo Finals there in 1980. I thought that would be a great thing to attend. Prior to the Finals in Long Beach, WPRA World Champion, Glory Jean Paulson and I had been going to a few All Girl Rodeos in California so we could make the finals in 1980 and compete in Long Beach. I met some Texas Cowgirls and got to see all the Women that were riding on the Women’s Pro Rodeo Circuit competing for year end titles. That is exactly what I decided I wanted to do after College! One of the Cowgirls that I met was Patti Presson (now McCutchen). Patti had been attending the Women’s Pro Rodeo Finals (WPRA All Girl Rodeo Finals) since the first one that was held in San Antonio, Texas in 1977. I entered the Goat Tying at the WPRA All Girl Rodeo Finals in 1980 and ended up Reserve National Finals Champion along with my great horse, Tweedle Bar. The Cal State Fresno Collegiate Newspaper did a write up about me which was genuinely nice. Little did I know, I was on my way to continue a Rodeo Career that has lasted my whole life. In 1981, I traveled with WPRA World Champion, Glory Jean Paulson to Hobema, Alberta, Canada for the Cowgirl Super Challenge Rodeo held on the Indian Reservation where we roped Tie Down Calves and entered the Goat Tying. We had so much fun and won a bunch of Canadian money to bring back with us to the states! They only had that Cowgirl Super Challenge one time, and I am so glad that I did not miss being a part of it.

The Snaffle Bit Futurity is much more than a horse show. The event encompasses ancillary activities like the Mars Equestrian™ National Finals Cow Dog Rodear, the DT Horses and American Rope Horse Association Futurity and a host of Snaffle Bit Futurity Youth Activities sponsored by Bet He Sparks that range from Leadline to Buckaroo Flag Classes. Additionally, Western Bloodstock Sales provide the perfect chance to shop the elite reined cow horse market, while the Snaffle Bit Futurity Sponsor Showcase offers the finest in tack, clothing, equipment and more. The atmosphere on Open Snaffle Bit Futurity finals night inside Will Rogers Coliseum was nothing short of adrenaline-charged as fans were treated to one dynamic performance after another at the $1.3 million National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity, presented by Metallic Cat. The crowning of Open, Cinch Intermediate Open and Limited Open champions represented the dreams of owners, breeders and trainers coming to fruition. In typical reined cow horse fashion it all came down to the fence work. Open Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion

NFR Qualified Paints Run at the World

Brittany Barnett & Chicks Keen O Pocopoo

Showcasing real-world ranch horses while putting a premium on fun, friendly competition, APHA’s all-breed Ranch Work Championships paid out $25,000 to competitors on September 19 in Fort Worth, Texas. The event featured three events: ranch penning, ranch course and ranch roping, all of which are limited to walk/trot only. Open to all breeds, the timed-event placings generated three sets of divisional awards, allows riders of all skill levels to shine amongst their peers. “What a night we had. The atmosphere and the competition was like none other,” APHA Senior Director of Marketing, Membership & Special Events Steven Hayes said. “The competitors are so passionate and to watch the horses they use every day come to the arena and compete for a championship is truly special.” Leanne Jetton of Stephenville, TX, ended up as the high-money winner of the night riding three different horses to win six checks for a total of $5,221.34. Aboard Pocos Sonnydee Sedona, a 2013 bay overo mare owned by Lynn Faust of Weatherford, Leanne snagged an additional $500 for having the highest-placing Paint Horse in the Ranch Penning. “This was my first Ranch Work Championships to enter, and I’m glad I did!” Leanne said. “We didn’t know where I would end up exact until the very end, and with the D system it really moves things around. Even if you didn’t have the fast time, you can still win a ton by just being consistent.” Fellow competitor Brent Bennett of Grandview, agreed. He was ranch roping champion in the 1D aboard TSU HBS Perfect Gin. “These events are the highlight of my year. The production is great, the cattle are good and we have a ton of fun,” Brent said. “I do this type of work every day, so being able to come in and compete like I work is so much fun, plus I have won money at every Ranch Work Championships I’ve attended.” Primarily a team-roping announcer, Ferron Lucero announced this year’s Ranch Work Championships, rocking the house with his witty sayings and excellent music choices. “I was fortunate enough to have announced the last Ranch Work Championships at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. Watching these cowboys and cowgirls competing in real cowboy events is a blast.” Ferron said. “Its truly special to watch the passion and competitiveness shine in all the competitors to the bitter end. If you ride a horse, you should enter this event!” For full results, please visit ranchworkchampionships.com. w Paint Horse Journal

Two celebrities in the world of professional barrel racing put the APHA World Championship Show on their dance cards this year, giving the APHA community a chance to see their talented National Finals Rodeo-qualifying Paints in action. Jimmie Smith of McDade, Texas, rode her 2010 palomino solid mare Lever Action to a world championship in Solid Paint-Bred Barrel Racing. Brittany Barnett of Stephenville, Texas, piloted Chicks Keen O Pocopoo, her 2007 sorrel overo mare, to a world championship in Stakes Race and fourth overall in Senior Barrels. Both pairs are also set to compete in the PBRIP Barrel Racing Sweepstakes tomorrow. For Brittany, qualifying for the NFR is something she’s dreamed about since she was a child. This year’s NFR takes place in Arlington, Texas. “It is literally every little girl’s dream, and it’s my dream come true to finally get there,” Brittany said. “The thing that makes this horse special is the size of her heart; she gives me her all every single time. She means the world to me. I’m going to start out on her on the finals. My other mare might get used a little bit, but she got me there this year, so I’m definitely going to run her.” Stakes race was new for the team here at the World Show, and after getting a primer for the class last night from a friend and practicing the pattern a few times at home, Brittany and “Pocopoo” laid down a smoking run to take the win. Jimmie and “Mini” posted a 16.613 to claim the Solid Barrel Racing world championship earlier today—a preview of how the team might do at the NFR. Though Jimmie has several horses she’ll take to the NFR, she expects to use Mini during the competition. “She is little but she is powerful,” Jimmie said. “I know on deep ground or trashy ground, she’s going to stand up and tippy toe around the barrels. So we will strategically place her and my Lena and Pixie in different spots each round. We’ve always dreamed of the Thomas & Mack experience in Vegas, but we are just thankful they are having an NFR this year.” Bred by Everett and Karen Witt of Asher, Oklahoma, Pocopoo is by Mr Dominator and Stylish Chick Olean (QH). Mini is by Another Hero (QH) and out of Katys Luck; she was bred by David Chapman of Kiowa, Oklahoma. w

Volmer, each of whom earned $80,000. Surrounded by friends and family, including her 6-monthold daughter Hadley Grace and her husband Chris, Dawson explained how the win was quite special considering that Selvarey’s dam Shine Smarter, by WR This Cats Smart, was her first Open Snaffle Bit Futurity finalist. Selvarey is a Dual Rey daughter and is a product of Dawson’s parents Richard and Cheryl Winters’ breeding program. Dawson describes the mare as having been exceptional from the start. “She’s been such an easy mare to train, she tries really hard and she hates to take a wrong step. She’s a dream to train, she’s awesome,” said Dawson. The humble champion not only credited her horse, but also her spouse and fellow NRCHA Professional, Chris, for his role in her win. “My husband, Chris, he’s just such a support system to me,” she said. “We ride and train horses together all day long and if it weren’t for him and having his eyeballs on me all the time I wouldn’t be where I am today.” Of her stellar finals performance Dawson explained that her mindset was simply to put forth a solid effort. “Winning it wasn’t on my radar at all,” said Dawson. “I was just trying to put a clean, smooth run together and get as big a check as we can at that point. It comes together when you least expect it.”

Bertolani Wins SWRHA Futurity

Franco Bertolani piloted Inferno Sixty Six to more than $200,000 in lifetime earnings, and in 2020 began showing the flashy stallion’s first foal crop. On Saturday night during the Southwest Reining Horse Association Billingsley Ford Open Futurity, Bertolani won the Level 4 Championship - and $17,590 - on Gangsta Sixtysix. “This is the first foal crop of Inferno Sixty Six to show,” he explained. Gangsta Sixtysix, out of Rush N Cat, is owned by Helga Smith Quarter Horses. “He’s been a great horse all year. I showed him at Tulsa and he was a 17.5, and then I showed him at Vegas and had some bobbles, but he was still a 16.5,” Bertolani explained. “I know he has a lot of potential, so I just wanted to show him one time harder before the big futurity.” Bertolani and Gangsta Sixtysix won the class with a 222.5. “He was awesome today. He gave me what I expected and I’m very proud of him. He turned nice one way and pretty big the other. He circled great and had three pretty nice stops. He ran and rolled back pretty good.” He added, “He gave me everything I wanted, and I am very proud of him.” Bertolani also won the Toyon Ranch Open Mare Bonus and placed sixth in the Open Level 4 on his other entry, Blueyedgirl, worth $6,353. Blueyedgirl, owned by Bruce Bertolani, is by Gunners Tinseltown out of Shining Survivor.. Open L3 Champions

Samantha Smith Gabriel Diano piloted MMB Colonels Chexi, owned by Margarita Buey Arietti, to a score of 222, not only winning the Open Level 3, but also earning reserve honors in the Level 4. That equated to a big paycheck of $20,603. It was an exGabriel tra special win for Diano. “It means Diano & a lot for us because this horse was Colonels born and raised at our place, so to Chexi win a futurity is special,” he said. “Also, Margarita has always supported us and been with us for a long, long time, so I’m really happy.” Diano added, “This horse is by Gunner and out of Foxynicki. Margarita bought the dam as a yearling, and this is her third baby. All of them have won money.” MMB Colonels Chexi put together a solid run. “He was really good for me and was there everywhere. APHA World Show APHA World Show All-Around & High-Point Awards

The APHA Breeders’ Trust Pleasure Stakes and Breeders’ Futurity classes award huge payouts annually at the APHA World Show, and 2020 was no exception. These premier incentive programs for Paint breeders, owners and exhibitors delivered at the 2020 World Show to the tune of more than $406,000! The pleasure stakes classes alone paid out over $72,000 to Breeders’ Trust-nominated 2- and 3-year-old Paints in four classes. Entries in the Breeders’ Trust Pleasure Stakes classes were up nearly 4% over 2019. The Breeders’ Futurity classes saw a healthy increase of 23.3% over 2019 and paid out a record $333,695. Weanling classes in the Platinum portion of the futurity were up 8.2% over 2019, while the Platinum Non-Pro Yearling classes paid out just under $50,000 in their inaugural year. “We are thrilled to be able to continue rewarding Breeders’ Trust-nominated horses and their owners financially, even in a year full of global uncertainty,” Director of Advertising & Incentive Programs Matt Arias said. “Proceeds from the new exhibitor sponsorship program helped add additional payout funds to the Gold Breeders’ Futurity this year and helped increase the payout 22.5% over last year. We are already looking forward to the 2021 APHA World Show!” Even in a challenging year, the APHA World Show, as a whole, saw big increases across the board. Champions were crowned, dreams became a reality and there were lots of reasons to celebrate. Overall, APHA World Show entries were up 12% across all disciplines with 1,536 horses competing at the event—an increase of 18.7% over the (combined) total horses in 2019. APHA thanks everyone who believed in this show and worked together to make it a success in such an uncertain year. w

IllBeYourHickleBerry is by Hickory Holly Time and out of Miss Slic Smoke, by Chick N San, and is owned and bred by Bret and Amie Paulick, Erdra, Utah. Paulick responded to his achievement in an understandably emotional post-win interview, first thanking his wife Amie, then the many supportive friends and trainers in the NRCHA family who have helped and supported him. “I’m blessed. Boy, it’s beyond unbelievable,” said Paulick. “We raise all our horses, his mother was a reserve world champion in the Non Pro Hackamore, half of her colts have been futurity finalists for me. I train them myself, Annie Reynolds has helped me for 25 years, she’s a really good friend. Martha and Rusty Ruby are really good friends who let me ride in the winter in their indoor arena.” Paulick and ImYourHickleberry’s journey through the prelims was a consistent climb that culminated with their high scoring fence run. “We just kind of kept creeping up there [through the prelims] and then in the finals when they turned that black cow in...you just know it’s there. He was awesome. That’s a good, good horse. We’re pretty proud of him. You look at the people you’re against and what it takes to get here, the support it takes to get here, it’s just unbelievable.” Roughly calculated, Josh Briggs, Pilot Point, Texas, rode his two horses to $37,211 in earnings this evening. Briggs and his 2017 mare Playin With Cher (Mr Playinstylish x Bella Cher x Peptoboonsmal) earned the Novice Non Pro Snaffle Bit Futurity championship and $3,560 with their 651 (216.5 herd/ 218 rein/ 216.5 cow). Making the victory even sweeter, Briggs was reserve champion riding Voodoo Whiskey (Shiners Voodoo Dr x Whiskey On Wheels x Paddys Irish Whiskey) to a 650.5 (216.5 herd/ 220.5 rein/ 213.5 cow) for $2,848. Briggs and Playin With Cher were reserve champions of the Non Pro Snaffle Bit Futurity, as well as the Intermediate Non Pro. Continued on page 24

Open L1 & L2 Champions When Ethan Wiley was presented with the opportunity to show Trashya Shine in the Open Futurity, he jumped at the chance. “My boss Dany Tremblay had shown him earlier in the year, and he asked if I wanted to show him here. It worked out really well,” Wiley said. Wiley and the colt, by Gunnatrashya out of Lil Miss Shiney Chex, marked a 220.5 to win the Open Levels 1 & 2 for earnings totaling $5,568. “It was really good everywhere. I wasn’t sure how much we were going to do, I just asked him to go as much as I thought we could. It all felt good and worked out great,” he said. Trashya Shine is owned by Carol Rose. “I thank Carol Rose for letting me show this horse, as well as Dany and Fred Tremblay. I also thank Mike Flarida who has helped me a lot especially at this horse show,” Wiley said. “I don’t know if I will get to show this horse again. We will have to let the bosses decide, but I hope so.” Taking Reserve in both Levels 1 & 2 was Rodrigo Nieves on Tagin Stiletto Chics with a 219.5. Owned by Jennifer Marley, Tagin Stiletto Chics is by Gunners Special Nite out of Stiletto Tag. Nieves and Tagin Stiletto Chics won $3,389. Open Prime Time Co-Champions

they each earned checks in Levels 3 and 4 totaling more than $4,500. McCutcheon was entered on his mare Vintage Nites, by Gunners Special Nite out of Vintage Crome. “I was really happy with her. She’s super green and missed some time this summer, so I came here not really knowing if I was going to show her or not. She did really well in the warm-up class, so I decided to give it a shot. She went in there and did everything I asked of her,” he said. “Since I own her, she fell through the cracks. As soon as I started riding her, I liked her. Cade showed her dam in the Non Pro and won about $75,000 on her.” Latimer rode CS Boomboomwalla, a gelding by Walla Walla Whiz out of Cheeky Boom. “This horse is owned and was raised at XCS Ranch. This is the second time I showed him, and I was really happy with him today. I showed him at Tulsa, and it wasn’t great, but today he was much better,” Latimer said. “We’re moving forward. He didn’t get turned really well, but the rest was solid.” When asked how they felt about the Prime Time division, McCutcheon said, “None of us like being in it, but it’s a fact of life.” Latimer laughed, adding, “But I don’t want to turn the money down. We will keep building off today,” prompting McCutcheon to reply, “I don’t want to agree with Duane about anything, but I agree on that. Plus, our horses were good, and that’s the main thing.” Latimer said, “I thank my whole team, and of course the owner XCS Ranch.” McCutcheon noted, “I own this horse, so I’m thanking myself, and thanking Duane for not being better than me today.” Complete results can be found at www.SWRHA.com. w

Mandy McCutcheon & Star N Diamonds

McCutcheon Win SWRHA Non Pro Futurity Mandy McCutcheon and Star N Diamonds claimed the win of the Southwest Reining Horse Association Custom Made Dunit Non Pro Futurity with a big score of 222. “She was good everywhere today. I didn’t have all of her attention in the right circle, but other than that she was pretty hooked up,” McCutcheon said of the run, which came with a paycheck of $5,719. McCutcheon and Star N Diamonds also won the Non Pro Futurity Mare division, worth an additional $750. Star N Diamonds is by Whizkey N Diamonds out of Starlight On The Bay. “She’s one my dad (Tim McQuay) bought this summer from Abby Mixon. Abby did a great job with her and had her really broke and ready to go. I just needed some time to get used to her,” McCutcheon said. Just a couple months earlier, McCutcheon and Star N Diamonds put together a solid run in the SmartPak Non Pro Futurity at the NRBC to place fifth. “She was really good at Tulsa. She’s been a good little show mare already,” McCutcheon said. “It takes a village,” is McCutcheon’s mantra when asked who helps her be successful. “I have been really busy the last few weeks between the Legacy Sale and following my daughter Carlee around to her jumping shows. Between my dad, Tom, Debbie Brown, and Fernando Salgado, they got her ready for me. It is a team effort around me all the time,” she said. “I thank my parents for buying this horse for me and always trying to have some good horses under me and my kids. I thank Tom and all the people at the ranch who work hard and make it possible to go to the horse show. It takes a very large village.” It was a good day to be riding a Whizkey N Diamonds at the SWRHA Futurity, as Ronny Colston claimed the Non Pro L4 Reserve Championship on Lil Ruf Whizkey (out of Lil Ruf Startime). Colston and Lil Ruf Whizkey pocketed $3,481 for the reserve title.

Cutters show up, show out and cash in at the APHA World Show

The world championship cutting classes saw a 35% increase in entries over 2019, but the big story was the Challenge classes where entries jumped from 18 in 2019 to 41-a 128% increase. Entries remained steady in the 3-Year-Old Cutting Challenge but doubled in the 4-Year-Old Challenge from 2019. The 5 & 6-Year-Old Cutting Challenge saw a whopping 450% increase over 2019 and the Non-Pro Cutting Challenge was up 129%. Overall, the Chrome Cash Cutting Challenge classes paid out a total of $34,415 to registered Paint Horses. In addition, the American Cutting Horse Association Cowtown Cutting paid out an additional $22,900 over two days. Even in a challenging year, the APHA World Show, as a whole, saw big increases across the board. Champions were crowned, dreams became a reality and there were lots of reasons to celebrate. Overall, APHA World Show entries were up 12% across all disciplines with 1,536 horses competing at the event-an increase of 18.7% over the (combined) total horses in 2019. w

When Kelle Smith purchased Exit 21 last October, she had serious doubts that the mare would compete during her futurity year. The talented filly, by Spooks Gotta Whiz out of Diva Dual, has exceeded all expectations, and on Friday not only won the Prime Time division of the Custom Made Dunit Kelle Smith Non Pro Futurity, but also finished & Exit 21 fourth in the Level 4 with a 218.5. All totaled, the duo won $2,954. “I bought her a year ago from Michelle Kimball, but at the time she hadn’t been in reining training or even had shoes on. I didn’t know if she’d even go to a horse show this year, let alone do what she’s already done,” Smith said, referencing a Prime Time win earlier in the year during the Non Pro Futurity at the NRBC. “She’s won about $10,000 so far. It makes me a little emotional when horses are your partner and do their job for you like she does.” Next up for Smith and Exit 21? The NRHA Futurity in Oklahoma City. “I thank Sam Smith, Fred Thomsson, the girls at the ranch, and all the people who help me,” she said. Jose Vasquez and Rock It Sassy Girl took reserve honors in the Non Pro Prime Time, and finished tied for seventh in the Level 4, earning $1,780. Back in the early ‘80s, the Breakaway was just making its debut into the WPRA as an optional event. In 1984, the WPRA voted to put it in as a Standard Event. It has been a long haul to this very day….to see the girls going for so much honor and money. It is unreal, and I get emotional about all of this. Back in the day, we would travel all over the United States just to compete with $100 added per event. We had a special place in the history of the WPRA for sure. Our Rodeos had Bareback Bronc Riding, Tie Down Calf Roping, Team Roping, Barrel Racing, Bull Riding, Steer Undecorating, and Goat Tying. Those days are down in history forever and gone as we do not have any Rough Stock Events at our Rodeos anymore. In 2006, the WPRA took out the Bulls and Bareback from the list of Standard Events that had to be held to call it a sanctioned rodeo. That was the end of that Rodeo era that I had been lucky and blessed enough to be a part of. In the early 90s, Mac Altizer added the

Breakaway roping to his PRCA rodeos all over South Texas. He was a huge supporter of the WPRA barrel racers and ropers. Other Rodeo Committees followed in his footsteps and it was always great to be able to compete at those rodeos like Del Rio, Sonora, Brady, and Coleman. Mac Altizer always had a vision for the future. Here’s to you, Mac! In the 2000’s, Lester Meier added Breakaway Roping as a WPRA approved event and still to this day is promoting it on his agendas in his Open Pro Rodeos. The Tejas Rodeo in Bulverde, Texas has been offering Breakaway in its Open Pro Rodeos every Saturday night from March through November and has co-approved with the WPRA on several occasions. Entries are growing substantially in these rodeos in the Breakaway. These contractors and many others have played a part in this year’s upcoming historical event. It is especially important to thank your local rodeo committees and contractors that offer Breakaway as an event when you compete or attend a rodeo. Rodeo events, like all sports have become, specialized. There are Calf Roping’s that are held all day instead of a Rodeo, there are bull ridings, team roping, barrel races, the list goes on. But there are very few All Women’s Rodeos held nowadays. I am still compet-

ing in Open Rodeos and it pacifies my Rodeo need, but it will never replace the WPRA All Girl Rodeo days that we lived and breathed. We created a history lesson that will never in our lifetimes be repeated. We started something not knowing where it would lead us to and kept it going and alive so that the Cowgirls that are now competing in the Breakaway are able to run at the type of money that we never even dreamt about. Do not miss this special place in the history of the WPRA. Cowgirls have never been in this position before, backing into the Roping Box at the NFR! This is the first time in history that the WPRA has Cowgirls in TWO Events. This year is pretty special for Women in Rodeo. Thanks also goes out to the WPRA Barrel Racers that have also paved the way and always make a great showing at the NFR. Without their spectacular runs year after year, this may not have ever happened. You can bet the pretty Cowgirls competing at the NFR for the Breakaway title are going to be swinging a big loop! As Barb Hampton advised me one night at a WPRA All Girl Rodeo somewhere in Illinois as I backed into the box to head one for JJ Hampton; Nod, kick, throw! God Bless Chris Ledeox w

FALL RIDE SEASON A SUCCESS The North American Trail Ride Conference (NATRC) is closing out its COVID-19 shortened year in Region 4 with a successful fall season of events. In October more than 80 horse and rider teams competed in Open, Novice, Competitive Pleasure and Leisure Divisions at the Grasslands Gamble in Decatur, Texas and at the Without A Trace in Athens, Texas, traversing between 35 and 60 miles of trail on a mapped course with judging for soundness, condition, trail manners and equitation throughout the weekend. At the Grasslands Gamble Dolly Miller and Wildfire Storm took top honors in the Open Division, Teresa Galliher and Vaquero in Competitive Pleasure, and Cynthia Leatherwood and Big Cat in Novice. Fran Muench and Giacomo won the highest awards in Open at Without a Trace, with Galliher and Vaquero winning Competitive Pleasure again. The final NATRC event of the 2020 season is November 6-7 at Bell Cow Lake in Chandler, OK where many competitors are looking for their final placings and points to achieve National Championships for the year. Although most National honors and prizes are not being awarded for 2020, National Championships are for those who earn 75 total points and have the required first and second finishes in multiple states. The 2021 NATRC Region 4 season begins with the Jingle Bell Jaunt at Parrie Haynes Equestrian Center on Chrissy Knight December 5-6. More information is on Sunset Gold available at www.natrc.org. w

I nicknamed my horse “Mr. Spooky shortly after I got him because even a piece of paper or a plastic bag terrorized him. Fortunately, I found the Texas Trail Challenge Club and I am amazed at the improvement in myself and my horses as we learned to negotiate obstacles and continued practicing them at home. Over many miles and through many obstacles, Mr. Spooky has become Mr. Steady and our relationship and trust in each other has grown tremendously. The Texas Trail Challenge Club (TTCC) hosts competitive trail rides all over Texas. Each ride is approximately 10 miles with 10 judged obstacles. Most rides are held on Saturday and Sunday, for a whole weekend of fun with your horse. The emphasis is upon natural, real life obstacles, that reflect useful trail skills and the ride managers and judges work hard to create a fun, challenging, and unique ride. It is exciting to see the varied terrain around the state, to learn new skills with your horse, and to make new friends. Ride mentors are available for newcomers. If you are interested in trail riding and obstacles, please check out the website www.texastrailchallengeclub.com. The 2021 year begins with Christmas Capers on December 12 & 13 in Navasota and the website answers questions about divisions, how to register, trail skills, and camping! w November 2020 SouthWest Horse Trader

PBRIP Sweepstakes

boasts record numbers Paint barrel racers showed up from across the country to claim their share of over $25,000 added to the Paint Barrel Racing Incentive Program Sweepstakes, which took place October 3 during the APHA World Championship Show in Fort Worth, Texas. The total payout for the PBRIP Sweepstakes was more than $43,000. This year’s event showcased 117 barrel racers—an increase in entries four times over 2019. “We had an amazing barrel race,” said Karen Utecht, APHA’s director of racing and PBRIP program manager. “From the ground to the quality of horses and competitors, it was great to see everyone come run for this kind of money.” PBRIP was designed to bridge the gap between barrel racers who run Paints and the American Paint Horse Association by making it easier for barrel racers to be a part of APHA without having to attend traditional breed shows. PBRIP brings the breed to you at barrel racing events nationwide by adding money to the pot specifically for those enrolled in the program. To find out more about the PBRIP program or to host one in your area, please visit www.apha.com/pbrip. w PBRIP Program Champions •1D Champion: Emily Thompson & Czech My Dashin Image, $2,674.20 plus $1,250 in the TX-bred incentive. •2D Champion: Tanna R.
