hen Stephenie Bjorkman decided to enter her horse's photo in Farnam's 2019 SuperMask® SuperModel contest, she had no idea how much the competition had

grown. "I follow Farnam online and saw the contest; I thought Maxwell would love this. I had a good picture of him and just thought I'd enter. I didn't realize how competitive it was," says Stephenie, an Arizona native and small business owner from the Scottsdale area.  “We were very pleased with the participation in the 2019 SuperMask® SuperModel Contest. We more than doubled the number of entries from last year. The word is spreading," notes Anna Brunetti, Digital Marketing Manager for Farnam. "Over 2,000 horse owners submitted photos from all over the country. The entries included many different breeds, colors, sizes, and ages, each image as unique as the next. It’s great seeing all these horses so loved by their owners.”           After Stephenie received notification that her horse was chosen as the winner, she was amazed at the abundance of prizes he'd won, an impressive fly control and grooming package worth $1,000 in Farnam products. "I didn't realize I was going to get so much," she says. "I've been in horses since I was six years old and have always used Farnam products. When I opened the prize box, I real-

ized I used most of them already. But there were some products I'd never tried before, so that was cool." Of course, another big part of the win was that Maxwell would have a professional photo session so his image can be used in upcoming advertisements for Farnam's ever-popular SuperMask® fly mask. "A well-cared for horse doesn't happen overnight. We appreciate that it takes hard work, total commitment and a lot of love," says Martha, adding that plans are in the works for the 2020 contest. To enter this year’s SuperMask SuperModel contest, visit www.farnam.com/SMSM2020 and submit your entry before the July 17, 2020 deadline. Only one entry allowed per person. & A Vintage Smoke

Second Triple crown for Vanlandingham A Vintage Smoke blew into the Jim Norick Coliseum during the Level 4 Open Finals of the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Derby presented by Markel. At the reins was his trainer, Jason Vanlandingham. The newly crowned NRHA Two Million Dollar Rider and the flashy black stallion had already made their mark on the reining industry by winning two of the three largest reining events: the 2018 NRHA Futurity and the 2019 National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC). The only accolade missing from A Vintage Smoke’s resume. An NRHA Derby Championship. That was remedied on Saturday night when the pair wowed the judges with flawless maneuver followed by flawless maneuver. The crowd held its breath as the pair exited the arena, awaiting the results. When the score - a 227.5 - was announced, the applause was deafening. For Vanlandingham, the win came with a feeling of relief. “I was disappointed with myself last year because we had a chance of winning it, but I missed my last stop. There was a lot of pressure to get it done, and this horse came through. He was really awesome,” he said. Feeling the pressure, he had to take a few moments for himself before competing. “I was pretty nervous, to the point where I had to get with the good Lord and do some praying because my confidence wasn’t there. A big feeling of relief came over me, and I just told myself to put my confidence in the right place,” he shared. That resolution was what he needed. “We went in there about as hard as he could go, and he stopped huge the first time. We were last in the set so there was no ground left, but he was locked in, and I was very proud of him,” he recalled. The win came with a big check for $60,000, with 5% going to nominator Karl Hapcic. Vanlandingham and owner Diane Mesmer were also presented a bevy of prizes. This is the second horse that Vanlandingham has ridden to win the three largest NRHA-approved events, which include the NRHA Futurity; the NRHA Derby; and the NRBC, an event for derby-age horses. The first time he accomplished that feat was with Not Ruf At All (A Sparkling Vintage x All Ruffed Up). “This horse is right there with Not Ruf At All. He goes in there on Saturday night, and he just gets it done. That takes a special horse,” he said. “This is an accomplishment I’ve been hunting for. It’s special to me because with our program being on the smaller side like it is, I’m never going to catch the top guys in earnings. To do something no one else has done is pretty special.” Vanlandingham shared that Mesmer plays a huge role in the stallion’s success. “She’s been great. She’s one of those owners who lets you do your thing and never puts any pressure on you. She’s been matter of fact about us eventually winning all three of these events, and she’s been right,” he said. 6

Indy Ropes the NRHA Non Pro Derby

Indy Roper was all smiles as she exited the Jim Norick Coliseum Arena on Friday evening, June 19, after her first run in the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Derby presented by Markel Non Pro Finals. She knew her performance on Spooks Show Time, by Spooks Gotta Whiz out of Dolittle Lena, was good, and when the score, a 222.5, was announced, the cheers were resounding. However, Roper had drawn number 2 in the Level 4 Non Pro Finals, meaning she had to sweat through 31 additional runs before she was declared the victor. When the last rider had cleared the arena, it became official: Indy Roper had won her first Non Pro Derby Championship including a check for $18,800. Nominator Bobby Lewis will receive 5% of the total payout. “I’m speechless. When we started this, winning the Derby was on our bucket list. My dad and I sat down and wrote down what we wanted to accomplish, and this was it. I’ve had many ups and downs in that arena, and this is definitely the pinnacle,” Roper said. Spooks Show Time, nicknamed “Raymond,” is known for his

NRHA Derby NRHA Open Derby Cont from page 6 A Vintage Smoke, at only 5 years old, has two years of derby eligibility left. “As long as he continues to show good for us, we’ll continue to show him. Everything from here on out is just gravy; he has nothing left to prove. I love showing him, and Diane loves watching him show, so we’ll just keep rolling,” he said. Taking the Reserve were Nathan Piper and Patriot. Piper and the 5-year-old stallion, by Smart Spook out of Dunit A Lil Ruf, won $47,572 for owner Shannon and Hershel Reid. Patriot was nominated by Toyon Ranch. Piper and Patriot have gone head-to-head with Vanlandingham and A Vintage Smoke since the start of their competitive careers. In fact, the two teams split the Level 4 Open Championship at the 2019 NRBC.

Kole Price Cody Sapergia

The Other Open NRHA Derby Championships Competing in the first section of the Open Finals, Kole Price knew he and Gunna Stop would have to catch the judges’ attention quickly. With that in mind, he pushed the 5-yearold stallion into the pen to run down for a big stop. “He stopped big and backed up really pretty, and then just stood there quiet as a church mouse. He was super hooked up, stylish, and quiet,” Price shared. “Coming around the ends, my reins were a little tangled up and I couldn’t steer him quite like I wanted to, but he took care of me. In the last stop, he dragged his butt, and it was just like how we prepared. He was incredible.” The judges agreed, awarding a big score of 222.5. That held on for the win of the Level 3 Open, worth $23,477. It was a special win for Price and owner Amber Gokey. Ali, Amber’s sister, who owned the colt, was diagnosed with ALM, an aggressive form of leukemia. Unfortunately, Ali recently succumbed to the disease. Arno Honstetter and Special Made Whiskey were last in the draw of the Finals and shook up the leaderboard. After scoring a 220.5, they took the Level 2 Open Championship and placed in the Level 4 and 3, totaling $34,676. “It was nice,” Honstetter said. “I ran out of horse after my circles, so I didn’t get my stops as nice as I wanted, but the first three-fourths of my pattern was really nice, and he tried really hard.” The 7-year-old stallion owned by Gordon Robinson, nominated by Dean Latimer, is by Gunners Special Nite out of Starlight Acres. “He’s been a good horse and shown for a lot of people—I’m very thankful I have him; he is a really talented horse.” Taking second in the Level 2 Open was Cody Sapergia, who piloted Chicowhiz to a score of 218.5. Not only did the pair take second in the Level 2, they also qualified for the Level 3 and Level 4 finals, bringing total earnings to $20,230. Chicowhiz, by Smart Chic Olena out of Whizicle, is owned by LaRizzi Corporation. The 5-year-old stallion was nominated by Equine Plus. Continued on page 12 Saturday’s Open Finals was only the 8

big stops, so the run-in stop of pattern 10 fit him perfectly. “He ran in, stopped good, and backed up nice. We got through the turns, and then I knew I could push him hard. Like I said, his claim to fame is his stops, so the final three stops showed what he could do,” Roper said. Kim Muehlstaetter took the Reserve and $12,758 on Spooks Grand Slam with a 220. Owned by Kim and her husband, Martin Muehlstaetter, Spooks Grand Slam is a 6-year-old stallion by Spooks Gotta Whiz out of Shiney Diamond Lady. Spooks Show Time was nominated by Bobby Lewis. The Other Non Pro Derby Championships With a score of 215, Samantha Smith and Drinkin Moonshine clinched the Level 3 Non Pro Derby Championship. They also finished sixth in the Level 4, bringing their total earnings to $21,116. “I feel pretty good right now knowing I won the Level 3. This horse is only 4 years old, and this is the first real major event I’ve taken him to, so I’m really excited for the future,” Smith shared. “He has so much ability.” Drinkin Moonshine was nominated by Peter Morgan. He’s by Shine Chic Shine out of Wimpy Little Girl, and was actually purchased for her fa-

ther, Lance Griffin. There was a two-way tie for second in the Level 3 between Addisyn Schmersal and McKinnon Larcombe. Each marked a 214. Schmersal rode Black Gun Face, by Black Face Dunnit out of Blazing In Black, owned by Hickory Creek Ranch LLC. Schmersal had also qualified for Samantha the Level 2 and Youth finals, bringing Smith her earnings for the night to $15,108. Her mom, Ginger Schmersal, nominated the horse. Larcombe’s entry, Gunners Bar Fly, is owned by her aunt Shauna Larcombe and was nominated by McQuay Stables. Larcombe and Gunners Bar Fly, by Gunner out of Blonde At The Bar, qualified for the Level 4 and Youth finals, for earnings of $13,820. Win My Cash is well-suited to his name. With owner Madison Gustin at the reins, the 5-year-old mare won the Level 2 and Level 1 Championships and checks totaling $12,638. Not only was it a first derby win for 17-year-old Madison, it was her first derby, ever. “I’m on cloud nine. This is a dream come true,” Continued on page 21 she shared.

The NRCHA Jack and Phoebe Cooke Memorial Derby is one of the most prestigious events for 4- and 5- year-old reined cow horses. Shown two-handed in a snaffle bit or a hackamore, horses are judged in three preliminary events: rein work, herd work and cow work. Top scorers from the preliminaries will advance to on to the clean-slate finals to win the coveted title of 2020 NRCHA Derby Champion and a share of the more than $330,000 in total payout. In additional to the popular Limited Aged Event, the Derby also offers a full slate of NRCHA-approved horse show classes and several spectaculars. A thrilling day of reined cow horse action on Saturday, June 13, wrapped up the main event at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Jack and Phoebe Cooke Memorial Derby. Open and non pro riders took center stage at the WestWorld of Scottsdale in sunny Arizona. The top combined score rode away with the prestigious NRCHA Derby Champion title and a share of more than $330,000. Husbandand-wife team wins $100K in #12.5 Showdown

Coming from the fourth callback position in Guthrie, Oklahoma, on June 22, team roping couple Hannah and Mike White of Dekalb, Texas, notched the biggest tandem win of their 21-year marriage. The duo roped four steers in 34.09 seconds to split the $100,000 first-place paycheck in the #12.5 Showdown of Wrangler BFI Week, presented by Yeti. Last year’s champion heeler, Clay Elkington, placed third this time to earn $25,000, bringing his individual two-year haul in the #12.5 to $61,000. And placing fourth in the roping was 22-year-old Wyatt Hershberger, for $20,500. His win barely surpassed the $18,875 his two little brothers hauled in during the Hooey Jr. BFI two days earlier. Anchored by the 43rd Annual Bob Feist Invitational for professionals on June 21, the five-day event includes eight affiliated amateur ropings and was held for the first time in the Lazy E Arena due to a pandemic-forced closure of its usual venue in Reno, Nevada. “We’ve never won anything big together,” said Mike White, who was wearing his 1999 PRCA gold buckle. “We struggle at it.” Mike, 43, earned nearly $2 million riding bulls – plus the gold buckle and a 2012 PBR Ring of Honor induction – prior to his 2010 retirement. “We rope so much at home, it’s exciting for a plan to come together,” said Hannah, who rode a roan gelding that Mike had acquired to train and later bought. “Our only fights have come in the roping pen. We work so hard at it, and we’re both very competitive. I don’t care if we’re going to the concession stand, Mike will say ‘I’ll beat you over there.’” Their final steer ran down the right fence, but White, a 7.5 heeler, had him roped on the second hop. When the top three teams had trouble, the Whites clinched the win. “I’ve got a mindset I used riding bulls,” he said. “I knew I could ride anything they ran under me. I didn’t! But it works the same here. No matter what steer I draw, I know I can catch it by two feet. It works in any sport to be confident in what you can do.” A Louisiana native, Mike trains roping horses and runs cattle when he’s not working as a ringman at regional auctions. In Guthrie, with his good horse hurt, Mike rode a 5-year-old gelding he’d trained and sold to his friend Ryan Caldwell. “We wouldn’t be here without Ryan,” said Mike. “He talked us into entering.” The Whites’s two sons, Logan, 16, and Morgan, 8, watched the big win, and the family was scheduled to be back in Dekalb the next day for Morgan’s baseball game. The couple’s annual Mike White’s Annual Pasture Roping, which benefits an organization supporting children with serious illnesses or injuries, was postponed this year to October 2-3. second time that Torri Sims has shown Codalicious. Competing in the first section of finals, Sims and Codalicious marked a 214.5, a score that held up to win the Level 1 Open title, as well as $4,263. “She’s a spectacular horse. I’ve been riding her a couple months now,” Sims explained. “I knew as soon as I ran in and she stopped like she did, that she would be right there with me and there wouldn’t be any problems. It was such a cool feeling.” Codalicious, a 5-year-old mare by Electric Code out of Custom Easy Breezy, is owned and was nominated by Loren Booth. Tell Edgmon and Shiney Chexy Chic took reserve honors in the Level 1 Open with a 213.5, worth $2,901. Shiney Chexy Chic, by Shine Chic Shine and out of TH Great Big Chex, Fernando is owned by Texas Horse Power Ranch Salgado LLC and was nominated by Robert Sutherland. It’s only the second year for the Bob’s Custom Saddles Novice Horse Open Derby, The division title is decided during the preliminary round of the NRHA Derbyl, and it was Fernando Salgado and Gotta Shiney Peso who were victorious. There was a tie for second in the between Sean McBurney and Americasnextdiamond and Ann Salmon Anderman and Maximum Mag. Both entries marked scores of 218.5 to win $3,265 each. The Prime Time Open Derby Championship was also decided during the preliminary round, and it was Ann Salmon Anderman and her horse Maximum Mag who emerged victorious. The pair marked a 221.5 (including handicap) to win the division and a check for $2,205. Anderman later marked a 214.5 during the Level 4 Open Finals. This placed her in the money in the Levels 4–2, and she pocketed an additional $6,450. There was a tie for second in the Prime Time Open between Shawn Flarida and Duane Latimer, with both men marking a 219.5 to win $1,536. Fuller & Ward win $155K at one-of-a-kind BFI in Oklahoma By just seven hundredths of a second over six steers, professional team ropers Kal Fuller of Bozeman, MT, and Reagan Ward of Purcell, OK, won the richest event of their sport and split a first-place paycheck worth a record $150,000 at the 43rd Annual Bob Feist Invitational. The event is part of Wran- Fuller & Ward Take a Victory Lap gler BFI Week presented by Yeti, held for the first time inside the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, OK, since its usual venue in Reno, NV, was shut down due to the pandemic. “Words can’t describe this,” said Ward, who won in virtually his hometown, riding a horse he bought from world champion Kollin Von Ahn. “My header is pretty phenomenal. I’ve never met a 20-year-old that can do the stuff he can do. Most people can’t even do what he can do.” The BFI is the most lucrative but challenging team roping event for professionals in America. Under the traditional format, the 100 best teams in the world are invited to rope six steers that have an 18-foot head start, for a purse of more than $600,000 in cash and prizes. Organizers allowed 140 teams this year behind a 20-foot head start, due to the location change, which pushed the purse over $700,000. Fuller and Ward, 32, were fourth-fastest going into the finals and made a snappy run of 6.04 seconds to win the round and add $5,000 to their total haul. NFR veterans Billie Jack Saebens and Junior Nogueira each roped just one leg. Then the leading team after five rounds, Utah’s Pace Freed and Cole Wilson, roped their last steer in 8.35 but fell just short in the aggregate to settle for second and split $100,000. The number of contestants competing in so many rounds meant the first team roped in Guthrie at 9 a.m. and the final round kicked off at 8 p.m. The BFI has long been a test of mental endurance, which adds to the bragging rights of a championship. Ward actually took a nap in his trailer in the three hours between his first two runs, while Fuller said he tried to keep moving throughout the day. “I blocked all the pressure out in my mind and tried to just think of it as another practice steer,” said Fuller, who had practiced at the home of two-time world champion Chad Masters and at Ward’s place prior to the event. Fuller had only entered the BFI once prior to this year. He credits much of his win to the sorrel horse he calls Marshall that he purchased from Nick Pullara. Meanwhile, Ward’s brother Andrew placed fourth in the aggregate with former BFI champ Buddy Hawkins, which meant the Ward brothers took $104,500 back to their native Edmond – less than 20 miles from Guthrie. The annual Rickey Green Overall Fast Time Award went to Cory Clark and Wyatt Cox, whose 4.65-second time won the fourth round and was the only sub-5-second run of the day. The Montana Silversmiths Head Horse of the BFI Award went home with Chris Francis. He and Cade Passig, both of Las Vegas, NM, placed seventh in the aggregate this year. Today and in 2018 when they won the BFI together, Francis rode Ima Monty Leo (“Dude”), the 13-year-old sorrel he bought from Kaleb Driggers. And Trey Yates of Pueblo, Colorado, won the Heel Horse of the BFI award for his black gelding, In The Nic Of Shine. “Tux” was a tie-down roping horse before the Yates family converted him to heeling. Yates said he’s ridden the horse at the past four or five BFIs. Several more competitions Jose Leme are on tap in Guthrie as Wrangler BFI Week continues. He finally did it. Barry Berg – who has overseen for nearly 30 years the production of millions of Cactus Ropes – has had callbacks three different times to win the coveted six-figure prize in Reno’s original Invitational #11 roping. On June 22, he and Dustin Noblitt, the president of Cactus’ parent company, personally roped their way to the $100,000 win on the 25th anniversary of the Wrangler National Patriot 11.5. “This is the fairest, friendliest place to rope four steers that you can imagine,” said Berg of Pleasanton, Texas. He and Noblitt had a three-second lead on the rest of the pack as high callback. They finished strong and clean anyway, to take the win by six seconds over Colorado rodeo veterans and best friends Dwight Arnold and Chris Glover, who earned $50,000. Noblitt rode his good mare that he shares with his daughter, a breakaway roper at Cal Poly. His previous biggest cash win had been a $35,000 payday with Shannon Jones in Las Vegas one year. Meanwhile, Berg, whose horse is 20, declared he’d give the money to his wife for staying supportive of him for nearly 20 years. “I’m just thankful the organizers of the BFI decided to make this happen; for them to remake this event here in Oklahoma and for the Lazy E to open their doors and let us participate,” said Noblitt of Solvang, California. “The stands here were full yesterday.” Ironically, Berg said the forced corporate shutdown due to COVID19 the past couple of months allowed more personal testing of Cactus’ latest rope, The Future, and his big win is a result of the fine-tuning of that rope. Plus, Noblitt said he was able to practice more in in the past two months than he had in two years. For Arnold and Glover, high-school rodeo partners in the 1970s, the big reserve championship capped off a fun recent reunion. Arnold, 62, had placed at the BFI one year with Mark Kersting, back when he was going to more than a dozen Mountain States Circuit Finals Rodeos. But he had quit roping for around 15 years to “try to get ahead.” Glover of Brighton, a three-time NFR qualifier in steer roping, said they’ve been just like kids again since Arnold moved back to neighboring Hudson. “Dwight ropes so good and scores so good and rides such a good horse,” said Glover, who turned 60 this year and started tying on. “He makes it so easy that I’ve really enjoyed heeling – I’ve had more fun than I ever had going to the NFR.” Glover heeled on Crisco, one of his steer-roping horses. Glover can head, heel, rope calves and bust steers on all his horses, including his 2018 AQHA/PRCA Steer Roping Horse of the Year. w

Okies win first-ever Cactus #10.5 for $61,500 Good friends Mark Collins and Max Vincent were moved to tears and long hugs after their $61,500 win in the first-ever Cactus 10.5 Over 40 roping during Wrangler BFI Week presented by Yeti, held at the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma. “To be able to drive two hours from the house and win life-changing money is incredible,” said Collins, who owns a lumber yard and hardware store in tiny Leedey. It marked the first time he ever headed a steer for Vincent, 59, instead of the other way around. A number change on Vincent’s part meant he was classified low enough for the pair to be able to switch ends and rope in the 10.5. It happened after Vincent underwent harrowing esophageal cancer treatment. “He was on the verge of death,” recalled Collins, 54. “He’s just lately put some weight back on.” The pair had won the first round for $3,500 and entered the finals as the high callback. They watched Quarter Horse racing’s leading all-time jockey, the retired G.R. Carter and his partner, Joe Waldman, apply pressure with a snappy six-second run. But Collins and Vincent made another smooth run to hold onto the fastest four-head aggregate time and earn the $58,000 paycheck. Carter and Waldman settled for second and $40,000. Vincent, a pipeline inspector and rancher from Dover, heels on a horse he got from former world champion header Nick Sartain. He said he tried not to pay attention to the short-round hype, refusing to watch other teams and keeping his eyes on the steers in the lead-up. w

Yoga for Horses

Contributed by Horse Led Healing

Whether our horses are used for pleasure riding or are top athletes showing now, they can all use a good stretching routine! Here is a quick reference to some easy yet effective stretches you can use every single day! Please use these stretches with care and really feel where you’re horse is at. Perhaps they are a little stiff in their left shoulder or can’t stretch as easy laterally to right as the left. Make it fun and remember they are stretches, so hold them for a minimum of ten seconds each pose. If your horse is having difficulty with these there may be a bigger issue at hand. If you’d like further guidance on how to make the best of these yoga for horses stretches, please feel free to contact me, Layla Harris, at HorseLedHealing@hotmail.com or though Facebook and Instagram as Horse Led Healing. Competitive Trail News In The SouthWest

PARITICPATE IN COMPETITIVE TRAIL VIRTUALLY

It is not too late to register and participate in the North American Trail Ride Conference (NATRC) Virtual Mileage Challenge and a Virtual Obstacle Challenge for 2020. With its competitions cancelled due to the pandemic from March through the end of June or beyond in some states, in May NATRC launched the two types of virtual competition across the nation. In June, the second month of the Challenges, more than 100 horse and rider teams used technology widely available on smart phones to submit GPS tracks in the Mileage competition, or videos in the Obstacle Challenge. The competitions run through November. For the Virtual Mileage competition, riders record their actual riding mileage on any number of commercially available smart phone applications and then submit those tracks to NATRC via e-mail. A confirmation receipt is automatically generated. The mileage is accumulated and awards will be presented at the end of the contest. For the Virtual Obstacle Challenge, riders receive five observations to record on video each month. Videos must be no more than 30 seconds for each of the tasks. Riders may register for one month at a time, or for all remaining months of the contest. Five certified judges from around the country evaluate the videos and provide a score from 1 to 10 for each, along with comments. Scores are accumulated throughout the competition and awards will be presented. More information and instructions on registration is available on www.natrc.org or on Facebook.w

COMPETITIONS TO RESUME IN FALL

Although many trail competitions were cancelled this spring due to the pandemic, many now have been rescheduled in the fall with updated protocols to keep riders and officials safe from Covid-19. The North American Trail Ride Conference (NATRC) Board has stated that competitions must comply with federal, state and local guidelines, with the next sanctioned event in the southwest The Wayfarer at Parrie Haynes slated for September 12-13, 2020 in Killeen, Texas. This is followed by a new location for NATRC at the Lazy F Ranch in Smiley, Texas on September 26-27. Three more competitions follow in October and November to complete the shortened 2020 season. “Everyone is really looking forward to getting back on the trail,” said the Lazy F Ride Manager Fran Muench. “It has been disappointing and frustrating to have so many rides lost completely this year. We hope that the turnout in September is record-breaking!” The Texas Trail Challenge Club (TTCC) has revamped its schedule with several events. See www.texastrailchallengeclub. com for more details. The American Endurance Ride Conference (AERC) has not rescheduled any of its spring rides at this time. The AERC Board will not sanction any rides until July 1, and all events must comply with federal, state and local guidelines. The ride competition schedule can be found on www.aerc.org. w 24
