ALTERNATIVE TRAINING

Popular Filipino street games give plenty of opportunities to develop an athlete’s agility, speed, and endurance. by coach cyrus alcantara

ome of the cross-training activities that we engage in are Filipino games close to our hearts. These games are not only fun to do, they are also flexible enough for the game master to make them more interesting and challenging. These games also work on agility, speed, and endurance. Sometimes, they can even lead to basic plyometrics. Pick one and enjoy!

PATINTERO

One group consists of five members. Members of the designated “it” group stand on the water lines. Members of the opposing group must be able to cross the lines without being touched.

TUMBANG PRESO

This is a popular street game commonly seen in Filipino movies. In the Visayan region, it is known as tumba patis. Ideally, there should be three players, one of which is the “taya” who guards the milk can or “lata.” The two other players take their turns striking down the “lata” with their “pamato,” usually a slipper. Whenever the “lata” is struck down, the “taya” must make haste in putting it back in its place to give him time to chase after the player who struck it down. That’s because the player who struck down the “lata” must retrieve his “pamato” and go back to base. If he gets tagged by the “taya” while going back to base, he becomes the “taya.” There are other versions of this game depending on the locality.

the opposing team’s base without getting tagged. If you are tagged, you become a member of the opposing team and must be rescued. Points are usually set. For example, the first team to tag the opposing team five times wins.

the moon, wings, or chest). Whoever succeeds in throwing the cue ball nearest the place that they have agreed upon will play first. The next nearest is second, and so on.

CHINESE GARTER

Two players play with sticks, each attempting to hit the stick much higher than the other.

Two people hold the ends of a stretched garter horizontally while others attempt to cross over it. The game starts with the garter at anklelevel, followed by knee-level, until the garter is positioned above the head. The goal is to cross the garter without tripping. The higher rounds demand dexterity as players leap with their feet in the air. For higher levels, doing cartwheels to “cross” the garter is allowed.

PIKO

UBUSAN LAHI

LUKSONG-TINIK

Two players put first their feet together and then their hands to build the “tinik.” The objective is to jump over the “tinik” as it gets higher.

TSATO

Piko is the Philippine version of hopscotch. Players stand behind the edge of a box, each throwing their cue ball. The first to play is determined depending on the players’ agreement (e.g. nearest to

Two opposing groups try to outrun each other in numbers. Whenever one group member gets tagged by an opponent, he becomes an ally of his tagger. This will go on until all the members of one group are tagged.

LUKSONG-BAKA

This is a popular variation of Luksong Tinik. One player, the “taya,” crouches while the other players jump over him. The crouching player gradually stands up as the game progresses, making it harder for the other players to jump over him. The jumping player who slips becomes the new “taya.”

AGAWAN BASE

There are two teams, each with their own base. The goal is to get into
