What changes have you noticed in coaching over the years? The level of athleticism and competition keeps rising. What are two things every swim coach should know? 1. It is about the relationship with your athletes. Medals, ribbons and state records are wonderful‌but it is the relationship you establish with your athletes that will be remembered. 2. Your athletes will remember your words and actions. Be a good example. If you can pass on one piece of information to yourself when you started coaching what would it be? Set high expectations and have fun. How would you sum up your years of coaching? Best job in the world! How long have you coached and how many TISCA clinics have you been to? 36 years coaching. 34 TISCA Clinics. How has the TISCA organization benefited you? A LIFETIME ON THE POOL DECK Q&A with Lifetime Achievement Award Winner Sven Schultz
What was your first coaching job? My first job to coach diving was when I was 15 years old. I would drive my Honda 100 cc motorcycle through the Memorial / Spring Branch area to coach at local community pools that had diving boards. I was paid cash and made a killing. I remember my girl friend ask me why don’t I get a real job then I showed her my cash for the week. She never asked again. My first high school coaching job was at Clear Creek high school as an Assistant swim coach. I never interviewed for the job. That summer I was riding my bicycle in Europe. The Principal called my mom and he talked to her. He must have liked what she said because when I returned, I had a job. What changes have you noticed in coaching over the years? The only thing that is the same is the length of pool and the height of the board. What are two things every coach should know? Keep family first. Make friends quickly with the Principal’s secretary and the school’s head custodian. If you can pass on one piece of information to yourself when you started coaching what would it be? If you give, people will take. Your time is valuable. Be careful of overextending yourself. I did a poor job of this. How would you sum up your years of coaching? Blessed. I had the freedom to experiment with different workouts, schedules, policies and procedures. I got to meet some outstanding coaches who guided me. I got to learn from different parents what might help me

A LIFETIME ON THE POOL DECK be a better father. I was pushed professionally, emotionally and physically. I was seldom micromanaged but had lots of responsibilities. I developed an academic curriculum, I managed a pool with multiple activities and mechanical issues. I coached multiple sports and levels plus worked to develop a new water polo league and a summer league swim team. We started a diving club that has now been offering instruction for over 30 years. How long have you coached and how many TISCA clinics have you been to? I started coaches when I was 15. I coached as a teacher/coach for at least 17 years plus was asked to return to only coach dive while being a school administrator for maybe 4 years. I served as a TISCA water polo chair. I attended every clinic while I coached but never the golf tournament because I have no idea how to play. How has the TISCA organization benefited you? It gave me the confidence that there were advocates for all aquatic athletes that really cared. I had the trust that if something was done poorly, people of character would address it. It didn’t satisfy all my needs but it did offer a network. What are some of the highlights of your career? A water polo state championship Winning a girl’s district swim and dive meet that had been dominated by another school since the 70’s. Several district and regional TISCA awards Helping several kids earn scholarships to colleges in swim, dive and water polo. Seeing our son dive at the high school state diving meet. Any special swimmers/divers over your career that stand out now? Funny, only the ones that got in trouble since there were so few. I got stories. What do you hope to be remembered for by your swimmers/divers? My hope is that I was an appropriate role model. That I wasn’t perfect but did my best for them. As someone who cared about them.
