After two long pandemic years, the loss of interest in COVID-19 is ever so clear. Here’s the thing, we’re still in it! We cannot let up now! Going back to the emergency mode basics isn’t a bad idea. Remember to properly mask up; avoid large crowds of people in public places; do not let other people in your home who do not live there; stay home when you are feeling unwell. Senate Seat 6
Steve Edwards
To the members of the Swinomish Tribe, my name is Steve Edwards. I am running for Senate Seat 6 in 2022. I have had the opportunity to serve my community for 18 years on the Senate, two of those years as a Chairman. It has been an honor to serve my people in this leadership role because what we do for our people and future generations is important to our community. Over the years, I have learned a lot from the past leadership and staff who I enjoyed working with. We have gone through some tough times and good times, but I feel we have made great accomplishments during those 18 years of service. I would like to say the two years as Chairman has had many challenges during this pandemic because it has changed our lives forever. As we continue to face the unknowns of our future, we will continue to work with health officials as well leadership to make sure there will be plans in place as we cannot afford to get lost in the mix. It has been sad to see the sacrifices we have had to make as Native people, not being able to gather as a community during such things as cultural events, especially funerals. I don’t like the fact that our elders have been isolated during these times and our kids have had to go through remote learning. We must work on realistic goals for our community regardless if it’s housing, education, or services. It is all important and we all must work as one unit as Senators to accomplish our needs as a community, and that means more meetings as leadership and as well as with the community for guidance as needed. Together we can make a difference in our way of life as the Swinomish Tribal Community. We must continue with our dreams as past leaders have passed on to us and maintain a safe and healthy community.

Katherine Paul txel gwelapu, Gelapu d?iiSed, dsyayae? (To all of you, all of you are my beloved people, my relations) My name is Katherine Paul (See-muth and Kuppikutak) and I am running for Senate Seat 6 this year. I grew up here in the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community. My parents are Kevin and Pat Paul, my grandparents are Isabella Yakanak and Alexander Paul Sr., my great grandparents are Elizabeth Scott Sampson and George Alexander. My husband is Camas Logue and I am stepmom to Finn and Oliver, all from the Klamath Tribes. Thank you for taking the time to read my statement of goals and objectives. First and foremost, I believe that every community member’s voice deserves to be heard and in my journey in running for Senate, I would like to learn from all the families about what is important to you with our community. I am committed to open communication and relationship building amongst our people. I am passionate about protecting Mother Earth, our right to housing and living on our homelands, and the right to equal opportunities for us in the workforce and within our education. I believe that our youth and elders need to be uplifted and that we must put every effort into fighting for our sovereign rights as Indigenous people as we continue to express ourselves with our culture, our language, and our connection to place. Our health and wellness are important to me as we journey through this pandemic. I know that there are many issues that each family within our community cares about and my goal as a community on a local, regional, and national level. I believe in yehaW – in going forward as a community with our common language. If elected to Senate, communicating on a regular basis with community members would be an objective of mine to help us reach the goal of working together as a community.

My dear Swinomish people, I am currently seeking your support for Swinomish Senate Seat #7. I am always committed to being here for my people. our people through these dark days. I was once asked by an elder, “Do you have the heart to hear your people?” He said, “Some people listen, but they can’t hear.” This teaching has stayed with me and has taught me that leadership is the power of our people. Those who grew up here know the turmoil that our folks have faced and are still facing. We must always ensure that the basic needs of our people come first.
