Alsager 5 Mile Road Race - Sunday 5th February 2012 Feeling very guilty at letting the Ladies team down twice in quick succession over the winter, I skulked off to deepest darkest Cheshire to what I hoped would be a gentle recovery race that would avoid Steve H’s radar. No such luck, I was spotted, so I might as well fess up and tell the story.

Alsager 5 is flat and fast and - quite boring. Last year I put my rubbish time down to the awful headwind over the last mile and a half. I now hear from locals that it is often windy – not such a fast race after all. This year it was perfectly still – but slushy. It had been snowing heavily the week before and I fully expected it to be cancelled. I tried all sorts of search strings on the Saturday afternoon to try to get information on the race status; the main website for the race seems to only have the front page operational; the other tabs are just a tantalising tease. I found a reference on the runners’ world site to information on face book; saying it might be going ahead because rain was forecast overnight– no good to me – I do so hate face book!! On the day of the race, it hadn’t rained overnight and I couldn’t get through on either of the phone lines, so I decided to drive the massive 10 minute journey anyway just to see what was happening. I did not expect to find another 562 nutters prepared to race on snow and slush. Because of an annoying run of injury and illness I hadn’t raced since Coniston last year and had no idea how I was going to perform, so I wasn’t too pushy about getting close to the front on the crowded start line. This made for a relatively slow first mile (I normally go out way too fast and my first mile is the fastest). Because it is a road race most of the course had narrow grooves of wet tarmac exposed where the cars had worn away the slush. This was great if the file of runners ahead of you were going at the pace you wanted, if you needed to overtake it was a bit dodgy. I did wonder at one particularly slippery moment why I had thought cross country too risky but was chancing a nasty fall on to tarmac. At points where runners were cutting corners, it was noticeable that they were no quicker than me playing safe, taking a longer route and sticking to the car grooves. For about a mile in total there was no clear tarmac and we all had to risk the slush, the short strides necessary to avoid falling were draining on the legs and drastically reduced everyone’s pace. The winning time was 52 seconds slower than the windy race last year. Despite my low expectations of both myself and the race, I did thoroughly enjoy it and put in a good time. I think I said last year, it is well marshalled and well organised. I shan’t be asking for a medium T shirt next year though – it’s a tent! Hope to see you all soon.

Race Reviews

Clayton Vale Cross Country - Saturday 11th February 2012 Yay! It’s the final cross country race of the season cried some people, others just cried, Cross country racing will do that to you! It was a very cold and cruelly Icy day for the last of our season, I’d met Dave Williamson and his Mother (who should be made an official honorary member of the Ladies team in my opinion) outside and we’d wandered down to the starting field to see a very depleted looking number of runners, Cross country tends to thin out from its rather weighty starting numbers at Heaton in October, even Team Swinton who usually have a good turnout looked decreasingly thin in numbers. As I arrived, Steve told me the race was cancelled, a fact reinforced by the man behind him who was rolling the course tape up. (Was I secretly glad? Well you’ll never know dear Reader!)However he was only tricking me and the course was still on, only slightly shortened because the ground was pretty solid, my ankles were already less than impressed, I could hear them writing letters of complaint to the Daily Mail. With the ground in such a state a fair few runners had called in quits for the day to avoid injury, Lauren and Bex being two of them, keen to avoid snapped ankles they’d gone for a run together on the road, to pass the time we’d headed up to watch to our ladies, who were already racing, Clayton is not one for watching really, the course is away and hidden for the most part but you can watch racers for a little section, we cheered on Lisa and Carly, both who ran really great races and also cheered on a girl wearing very little clothing, impressively she’d arrived late and still worked her way up the field, Steve Hart did take several shots on his Camera of this lady....... “for the newsletter” he told me! Still you’d never catch me in Running Knickers, even if I was an ace runner. Our turn as always quickly came round, we stated in our new adjusted race start and quickly we were off, personally I don’t like this course, it’s a little dull, just a rough figure of eight with a few steep bits thrown in for good measure, as a last race of the season it’s OK, unusually I was running quite happily, I’d decided to just take my time and find the pleasure in this course, it was working for me however Steve was having a different race to me and decided to save his legs for another battle instead, four laps of this one can be a bit of a grind but I got through, was nice to have the ladies team cheering from the sides as always, Our lasses always do a sterling job of cheering when the blokes run, I for one always appreciate it. Pretty soon the race was run and all was packed up for another year, my second cross season completed, though this year I missed the Nationals and Northern championships I’ll be there for the 2012/13 season. Well run to everybody who took to the fields for a race, it’s not easy cross country but it certainly is rewarding. See you all again next season for more grass stain related fun Paul Shier Full results available here SWINTON

Race Reviews

Winter Hill Fell Race - Sunday 12th February 2012 The Winter Hill fell race at Rivington, Bolton is renowned for it’s punishing climbs and it’s legendary adverse weather conditions (what do they expect holding it in February?!!). It’s around 11 miles long and has approx. 2700ft of climb making it a category “AM” fell race (‘A’ being the steepest out of the three climb classifications and ‘M’ standing for medium distance). Unless you travel to the Lakes or Peak District, Winter Hill is one of the few “local” fell races with such a combination of climbing and distance making it an attractive race to many in the Greater Manchester area. Add to that the infamous tricky navigational aspect of the race and you can understand why so many see it as a challenging race (see race profile below).

I first attempted the race around 6yrs ago when it was bright and sunny at the start (next to the Old Barn at Rivington) yet horizontal snow and blizzards up on the top! I did quite well so tried the race again the following year – this time I got lost, hit “the wall” and dropped out!! I had intended to tackle the race again at some point and so tried it this year. Unfortunately, the icy conditions (clearly visible at the Clayton Vale XC the day before) meant it was going to be another year of interesting weather conditions! With the memories of hitting the wall in my previous attempt (and the prospect of “Fellrunning on Ice”), I decided before the race to take it steady in order to pace myself around the full course. This payed off and I managed to make it round the full route without resorting to either crawling on all fours or desperately gulping down energy gels and jelly babies whilst hallucinating between checkpoints (I told you it was a challenging race!). The course roughly follows a star shape route with the TV mast on top of Winter Hill being the centre. You climb up and down “The Hill” around four times with an unwelcome last long drag along a gravel track then down to the finish at the Old Barn. I finished the race in 1.59.07s coming 46 th out of 173 finishers. The winner taking 1.30m (the record is only 4 mins quicker at 1.26m!!!). Despite the elements (patches of sheet ice, frozen tossocks of grass which didn’t move when you stepped on them and peat bogs which should have been frozen but instead you sank in them unto you thighs and the mist leaving visibility down to about 20 feet) I was still only a minute of my previous PB which has only spurred me on to want to do it again next year, in the hope the weather may one year, actually be sunny and dry!!!

Winter Hill Fell Race - Sunday 12th February 2012 If you’re after an alternative to running on the roads where there’s fantastic views, no traffic, heart stopping descents and lung busting climbs then I high highly recommend fell running. There are races to suit every ability and navigation is not always essential (especially on shorter races which are marshalled as well as trail races). For further information see the Fell Runner’s Association website www.fellrunner.org.uk And for some great introductory races, try the “Run The Moors” series in the South Pennines which I will be aiming to compete in. Please feel free to pick my brains with any fell running queries if you like (it won’t take long, I assure you...) http://www.felljunior.org.uk/GP/

Race Reviews

Mad Dog 10K, Southport - Sunday 12th February 2012 My friend Janet Hilton, who is the pharmacist at the other Co-op in Goldborne, suggested this run and having not entered a 10k for many a year I thought why not. Ian was dragged along as chauffeur and route guide and on a cold damp day we set off for the seaside. We arrived early in and collected our superb race T shirts before the queues started then waited for other Janet to arrive so race tactics, or just the plan to get back to the finish, could be discussed. They have crazy pups 1 mile run at 10.00 for the youngsters who all have to howl before they set off. Fortunately we were let off this bit of “fun” at our start. Then after the last trip to the loo I bade Ian farewell and made him promise to wait for me at the finish and we joined over a thousand other Mad Dogs to wait for the start of our race. As in the legend it was a cold misty day if Southport and although cold there was no wind so it was just the distance to conquer as we set off out of the sports hall grounds and down the road towards the seafront where unless you are very lucky there is no sign of the sea. The course follows the sea front past the Marine Lake, under the pier then turns after Princess Park for the return loop following the inland road. The course is extremely flat, the organisation great and the T shirt and goody bag where excellent. You even get emails from about two weeks before the race with helpful hints and even weather reports for the day. The entry fee is quite expensive but considering the quality of the T shirt etc it’s worth it and as long as it’s not windy this would definitely be a PB course as it’s so flat. The run is worth doing for the legends themselves which are reproduced below and we’ll definitely be back to join in the 2013 legend. There were four Swintoners there, Chris O’Loughlin 39.40, Samantha Fenwick 53.14, Ian 54.16, Me 65.54 and my friend Janet finished just behind Ian in 54.56.

The Legend of MAD DOG 2011

Legend has it that if you go down to ye olde South Port on the North West coast on a certain February morn, you will see the legendary knights of the olde Round Table as they release the fabled Mad Dogs on their ritual journey. These tortured creatures burst through the morning mist to trace their mythical route, according to the prophecy of their ancestors. 10,000 metres, not a metre more not a metre less such is their quest. These demented yet determined souls can be heard screaming and yelling on their way to their final destination. It is said that once you have heard the sounds of the pavements punishing their feet, it will haunt you forever. Many who have heard and watched have themselves become Mad Dogs in future. These Mad Dogs can only be released from their punishment once they return to the place from whence they came. If you are lucky, you will see the immense joy on their faces, as they cross the finishing line at their starting point. They then disappear silently through the mist and all is calm once more, as though it never happened.

Never again, until next year!

The Legend of MAD DOG 2012

From the days of Yore a legend tells of a war that lasted for more than a millennium between the fabled Mad Dogs and the Evil Demons of the north winds. This conflict came to an end with a final battle on the barren sandy plains of Ye Olde South Port, when the mad dogs were defeated in a ferocious attack and the surviving hounds retreated to the mountains where they would remain in hibernation. But now, according to the prophecy, they have re-grouped and are ready to battle the demons of the North winds once more. Helped by the legendary knights of Ye Olde Round Table, the canines have returned to bite back! The Prophecy foretells that on the 12th February morn, in the year of the dog 2012, the Mad Dogs will once again emerge from the swirling morning mists to meet at the pre-ordained place. Once assembled, The Round Table Knights will release the creatures, in accordance with the sacred code, and the Mad Dogs will burst forth bravely to trace a route around their ancient battleground. 10,000 metres, such is their quest, not a metre more, not a metre less. These demented, yet determined Mad Dogs will not rest until they have paid tribute to their ancestors and once again proved that mad dogs cannot ever be defeated. Frothing, Panting, Sweating, they will run ... focussed on their task ..Never ceasing Many will watch, many will shout, to help and support these poor dogs in their mythical quest... The howling and screaming as the pavements punish their feet can never be forgotten.... A sound that will haunt mere mortals forever ! If you are lucky, you will see the immense joy on the faces of these crazed and demented creatures as they cross the finishing line at the end of their journey. After a brief rest they will all then silently disappear once more through the fog of the morning, and return quietly to the dens from whence they came...All will be still once more...As though it had never happened.

Never again, until next time! . I am a mad dog survivor! .. I can never be defeated ! SWINTON

Standish Hall Trail Race - Saturday 18h February 2012 Organised by the Wigan Phoenix Club, the Standish Trail race is a must for anyone who enjoys mud, bridle paths, woodlands and hills! Run twice a year in November and February the race over 10k or thereabouts is deliberately aimed at ensuring that it’s run in the most hideous of underfoot conditions. I did the race some three years ago so had a fairly good idea of where the worse parts of the course would be and can justifiably state, that this year’s race did not disappoint. Originally, 3 intrepid souls from Swinton were due on the start line but unfortunately, Fiona, relegated herself to driver, and keeping warm in the race headquarters of the Brittania Hotel, whilst Mel and myself braved the cold chill sweeping in from the west. The start on Shevington Lane, was a good mile away so great for a warm up and sussing out the competition. My mate Gary who joined the occasion was relieved to note that there was someone less fit looking than himself and wasn’t the only non- weather worn seasoned runner in the field. Ron Hill jogged past him and for Gary finishing ahead of the legend took on an obsessive goal that sadly was to end in bitter failure. The race itself is totally off road and takes the bridle paths through to Stockley Wood. The first couple of miles are primarily flat and uphill, then thankfully the route takes a sharp descent to the wood itself which is circumvented twice before returning back along the bridle paths and to the finish. Unfortunately, just out of the wood is a cow field which was simply a 400m stretch of two feet deep mud and was treacherous underfoot even with trial shoes. A certain member of Swinton Running Club had the audacity to comment on my finishing time of 59m and point out that he had completed the course in around 58m a year ago but failed to mention that he ran the race in dry conditions. You need to get closure Dave Williamson! The finish along a wide path allowed which was relatively solid allowed for a good sprint, and thankfully enabled me to overtake one of the many Penny Lane Striders who entered the race. Mel finished soon after and we jogged back down the course to see the legend that is Ron, sprint past Gary with 50m to go. Many profanities later he acknowledge that Ron Hill probably wasn’t taking performance enhancing drugs and that it was ok to be in your mid 40’s and be beaten by someone nearly 30 years older. That’s the beauty of running, age is no excuse! For those who love trails and mud, its’ definitely worth doing this race. Added bonus being that it starts in the afternoon as well on a Saturday!

Race Reviews

Central Lancashire 5K - Sunday 19th February 2012 It’s the start of the Grand Prix season 2012 and we all know what means?! Exotic destinations, pit ladies, hair raising turns, smashes, crashes and the occasional red flag.... Well it does if your into your Formula One that is, this is the Central Lancashire running grand prix which is to Formula one as much of a difference as 125 cc go carting in your local Aldi car park however this is our season and I for one was excited to be racing again! First race of the season was 5k hosted by Bolton Harriers who apparently according to their website have been running, jumping and throwing stuff since 1986, it was an early start, well for me and Adam anyway, I was awake and excited so picked Adam up about quarter past eight, slightly forgetting the place was only a few miles down the road, we arrived about twenty to nine, pretty much about the same time the team hosting the race arrived to start setting up, I suspect Adam was less than impressed at my early start but as he’s a true gent he kept his opinion to himself! The race starts and is hosted out of the local leisure centre, sadly the lass on open up clearly had decided to have a lie in and didn’t get there for a good three quarters of an hour after us so Adam and myself passed the time mooching around the building or listening to music in my car! Soon after other people did start to arrive and the race day was on in earnest, Mike and Emma arrived, as Mike was not running he was wrapped up like an Arctic explorer while the rest of us bounced around in shorts and the like, he had his uses though as he quickly became a pack monkey for our keys and phones. With our team now arriving in earnest and with support in the form of Mike, Ric and Lauren we got ready on the racetrack, Team Swinton was out in force, it was good to feel that team spirit again, as the clock struck half ten we were off racing, well apart from Dave Williamson who managed to rub Deep Heat in his eyes, the course is a track start which inevitably means everybody rockets off, checking my watch as we left the track I saw a six minute mile pace which for me is suicide so I pulled back a little and leapt around the Bollard just round the back that nearly crippled me last year! The course contains a great downward bit about 800 metres in, I for one threw myself down at top speed wheeling down much to the amusement of Adam and Rebecca who quickly passed me again once the ground flattened out, sadly as the old adage goes; what goes down stupidly fast must come up slowly, the upward is much more gradual but didn’t give me chance to get my breath back, I huffed along for a while before my breathing balanced out. Once back up the hill the course is mostly flat, you go back past the track and out onto the main road, I’d picked up a running from Bolton who was running around my pace and decided to stick with him. I was happily cruising along about 8.5 minute miles, I could see David Byrne ahead but no other Swinton runners as I rounded the back of the park to make the final 1000 metres when I heard a familiar voice behind me say “come on Paul, I’m right behind you” Lisa Ottiwell whose running is getting better day by day at the moment was on my ear! I pushed on, ever aware of the presence on my shoulder, we rounded in the track to returned and I managed to only just stay ahead finishing just outside my 25 minute target, not bad for a first race. Swinton as always put in a great set of performances with Dan Bird and Steve Doxey racing right down to the knuckle in a sprint to the finish among others giving us a fab start to the season. Well done to everybody who raced and good luck for the rest of the season! Paul Shier SWINTON

Race Reviews

Radcliffe 10 Mile Trail Race - Sunday 26th February 2012 The race has been renamed the Terry Nortley 10 mile to remember the club president of Radcliffe who sadly passed away in November 2011 and I’m sure he is missed by all who knew him. Having done the race last year and loving the fact there is trail and mud involved I was determined to be at least fit enough to complete the race this year. So managing to up my mileage enough I entered and eagerly awaited the day of the race. Having got over my initial stress of not having raced for so long with the Bolton 5k the previous week I just felt a giddy kipper every time I thought of the trail run. The week leading up to it saw me having numerous pep talks off well wishers who made me promise not to race too hard, be careful on the cobbles and look after my knee. Morning of the race I dressed in my colour coordinated race gear complete with matching red nails, just because we’re going to get muddy doesn’t mean we can’t start off being glamorous, and waited to be picked up. Thankfully there were no dramas on the way to the race and knowing where we were going this time, unlike the 5k last week, we arrived in plenty of time to collect numbers, meet up with the other Swinton runners and jog down to the start. There was a good turnout of Swinton runners, Paul Rutherford, Dave Williamson, Andy Smith, Steve Doxey, Ric Waring, Adam Pickup, Dave Pargeter and Dan Appleby for the men and Julie Whelan, Claire Wolfendale and myself for the ladies. The race was delayed slightly for the few runners who had arrived late and registered to get down to the start line but the off came soon enough and a field of 261 runners set off along the road towards the trails. The route itself is a mixture of road, paths, hills and my favourite part, mud!! It is a testing course and not one to expect to PB on. The first mile and half is reasonable flat before turning up a sharp hill that follows an undulating path around a field. Dropping back down to the trail we headed into Philips Park across the motorway bridge with another climb up to the water station. Back down into the trails we start back towards the finish crossing another motorway footbridge which can be very bouncy when there are a couple of runners on there and not a favourite part of the course for me. The marshals along the route are friendly and encouraging and there were even comments that the runners towards the back of the field must be having too much fun and we were all smiling. At about the 7 mile point we head back up the hill towards the undulating path around the field before dropping back down for the home stretch. A final single file bridge with a photographer set up at the end brings the runners back past the start point then it’s an uphill battle to the athletics track with the finish line half way around it. The men and Julie had already finished the race when I got there with Dan coming in 22 nd overall and first for Swinton with a very impressive time of 1,04,32. Julie was first lady home for Swinton with a great time of 1:26:16. I was pleased with my time which was only a minute down on last years and Claire had a great run and finished with a smile on her face. Being a lover of trail running I would recommend this race to anybody who fancies a longer trail run . It’s cheap enough to enter, not too far to travel and supports local clubs which I personally think is a good thing to do.

Greater Manchester Marathon Marshals Required Sunday 29th April 2012

2012 marks the return of the Manchester marathon and with a large number of Swinton runners taking on the 26.2 mile challenge some of us not running are opting to channel our energies into marshalling instead. The club will be manning a water station so we ideally need at least 20 people to help out. The organisers of the event have promised us all some complimentary event clothing plus a donation to the club as a thank you, plus we also get to cheer on all of our club mates. If anyone would like to help out (and this can be friends or family as well a club members) you'll need to register through the organisers' website at: http://regonline.activeeurope.com/Register/Checkin.aspx?EventID=1031300 When given the option make sure you select "Drinks station marshal" and you'll then be asked to enter the club code which is: swinton2012. Any questions please give me a shout. I know some people won't know availability/ shift patterns etc. until nearer the time but don't worry we have a few weeks to get you registered yet. Many thanks Rebecca

Secretary Steve Doxey Treasurer Ian Thomas Membership Secretary Barbara Bayliss Social Secretary Jonathan Mellor Club Captain Steve Doxey Ladies Captain Rebecca Mills Web Site & Forums Steve Hart Swinton Running Club is proud of its friendliness and welcomes newcomers to come down and meet us for a run, to see if we meet your expectations. We meet at 7:30pm on Mondays and Wednesday at Swinton Moorside Cricket Club. The club can provide you with the opportunity to train and compete at whatever level you choose. We are affiliated with England Athletics for Road, Fell and Cross Country running. We have members from fun runners up to International level - all enjoying taking part in a sport that provides the chance for everyone to find the event that suits them best. We regularly compete in local races at all age and ability levels. Some members just come down to the club to run and don't want to enter races, but prefer to train with like minded people and enjoy the social side of being with a club.

We hope that you enjoy this occasional newsletter. If you are sick of it clogging up your in box, let me know and I will take you off the circulation list.

Steve If you have any race reports, photos, announcements or any news that would be of interest to the others members please let just know.
