Stoneware Platters (1986-1989) & Panel Reliefs (mid-1980s)
42-49
In the mid 1980s, Washington pushed his ideas of working with clay to a breaking point. He commenced working on thrown platters which he allowed to split and break and tear. He ‘cut them, scratched and dented the works and he added metal, fibreglass and broken metals’. There are three types of platters: type 1 - with folded and lifted edges; type 2 - with raised and cut edges; type 3 - with thrown edges. In the kiln, he ‘overrode’ his knowledge of chemistry to see what happened when the material was used wrongly, and in reduced firing to see what it produced. Some of the wall platters are wheel thrown or made on a slabber in stoneware clay. The decoration includes slips and engobes, other clays and enamels - also anything that withstood the oxidising kiln fire. The firings vary from 1260°C down to 800°C and were multi-fired - usually three or four times. The panel reliefs were a development from Bob’s stoneware platters. He wanted to find materials that avoided the limitations of the stoneware. ‘Anything goes that stands the kiln, whether it be metal, ceramic, thread, blanket or paper’. These are of a mixture of ceramic fibre and silica fired to a semi-molten state. Each was then decorated with engobes, underglaze colours, enamels and any material that withstood the kiln fire and multi-firings. The progression to these lighter panels was one of practicality - the larger stoneware platters were too large and heavy to move. 42
