Inhabiting Space _UG1 Design Studio project_2 Wotong Shen Fall10
In this project light is a main focus. When studying light, I realize that light can define space and give people direction. This reminds me the function of wall. Then I decided to make a ‘wall‘ out of light in my design.
After experiments in light boxes, I found some way to define space with light. And by overlaping light, I created depth of the space.
Then I tried to use strong light to penetrate solid, in this way people can see and feel the volume of light. I wasn’t satisfied with the outcome. Because none of my experiments look like ‘light wall‘. I started to wonder what light wall should be like. But all I can visualize is the light cone created by Anthony McCall in a haze - filled room. Then I found the reason that I couldn’t realize the light wall is that people can’t recognize something that doesn’t really exist. So I can never make something look like ‘light wall‘. On the other hand, as long as I can create something with light that satisfies certain qualifications of a wall, I can tell people that is the so-called ‘light wall‘.
Experiments in manipulating perspective
Light (dis)play Then I was given the site to design a gallery for the observation of the passage of time as while as thew spaces to and from the gallery.
Trying to better incoporate the building with the site.
