About TVET What is TVET? (TAFE NSW delivered Vocational Education & Training) The HSC allows students to undertake study in a variety of vocational areas that provide work-related skills and knowledge. These VET courses count as units of study towards the HSC and many can also be used in the calculation of their Australian Tertiary Admissions Ranking (ATAR). Senior high school students attend a TAFE NSW college to undertake a course that is included as part of their HSC pattern of study.

What are the advantages of undertaking a TVET course? The TVET option provides an alternative choice for those students who desire to: experience an adult learning environment access well-equipped classrooms, workshops, computer laboratories, and facilities that meet industry standards be taught by industry- trained and experienced specialists select from a wide range of courses TVET courses (based on TAFE NSW mainstream courses) will provide students with advanced standing and credit towards TAFE NSW mainstream courses. The majority of TVET courses also offer ‘continuing student status’. This allows students, to be given priority entry into further courses in their chosen study area, provided they enrol in the higher course within a two year period of successfully completing their TVET studies.
TVET courses: have been developed or endorsed by the Board of Studies Teaching and Education Standards NSW (BOSTES) provide credit towards an AQF (Australian Qualifications Framework) qualification which is nationally-recognised count as units of study on the Year 11 Record of Achievement or the Year 12 HSC may contribute to the ATAR (depending on course selected) assist you in acquiring new skills and capabilities a re appropriate for any ability level, including those who plan to proceed to university study are taught by teachers who have vast industry experience and links provide all equipment, materials, protective clothing and texts at no cost to students provide articulation into traineeships or apprenticeships provide maximum advanced standing into a TAFE NSW Certificate course after leaving school

TAFE NSW is an adult learning environment. This means that you must behave like an adult and take responsibility for your own actions whilst you are attending TAFE NSW.
Attendance at TAFE NSW TVET courses are generally offered at TAFE for four hours, one afternoon per week over one or two years. There are, however, other variations of course delivery – see ‘Types of TVET courses available’.
What costs are involved? Students from Government schools are supported by funds from the NSW Department of Education – no additional cost to students will be incurred. Students from non-Government schools will need to discuss possible costs with their school. It is the decision of the non-government school or the system authority whether costs will be met out of school or authority funds, or whether individual students will have to cover all or part of the TVET course costs. All students are required to pay for their own travel costs to and from TVET courses. Mandatory equipment, safety gear and textbooks will be provided by TAFE for all students.

School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs) In addition to the usual TVET course program, school-based apprenticeships (SBA) and school-based traineeships (SBT) are also available. A school-based apprenticeship or traineeship combines paid work with TAFE NSW training and school. The SBA option is equivalent to the first year of a full-time apprenticeship, whilst an SBT will provide a certificate of proficiency in the traineeship area – a great start for student’s’ post-school career options!
Students with a disability Careful consideration must be given to the courses selected by students with a disability. The chosen course must be assessed as the most appropriate course for the student and one that will provide successful vocational outcomes, together with the opportunity of further education and employment. Students with a disability can apply for TVET courses listed in this booklet. There are a small number of courses that are offered specifically for students with a disability. These courses are adapted to meet the needs of students and include additional student support as required. These are known as ‘discrete’ courses and are available in the following areas:

Types of TVET courses available for student selection TVET 120 hour

These courses run for three school terms (4 hours per week) and give students the opportunity to try out a vocational area that they may wish to pursue as a post-school career option. Students undertaking a 120 hour TVET course will receive a TAFE NSW Transcript of Academic Record, which will list the units of competency that they have studied. These courses are open to both Year 11 and Year 12 students and give 2 units of HSC credit.
These courses run for seven school terms (4 hours per week) - commencing in Year 11 and continuing into Year 12. Students receive a solid grounding in the vocational area that can assist with making informed decisions about future study at either TAFE NSW or university, or can lead to direct employment after finishing school. Students undertaking a 240 hour TVET course will receive either a TAFE NSW Transcript of Academic Record, or in some instances a Certificate II or III national qualification. These courses are open to Year 11 students only and give 2 units of HSC credit per year.
These courses run for seven school terms (4-6 hours per week) – commencing in Year 11 and continuing into Year 12. There are only a limited number of 360 hour TVET courses and some will be School-based Apprenticeship or Traineeship courses (SBAT). There will also be two or three block sessions of delivery over the two years of the course. Delivery for some SBAT students may require the student to attend one full day per week with a first year apprentice TAFE NSW mainstream group. Students undertaking a 360 hour TVET course will receive a total of 6 units of HSC credit over the two years and will receive a TAFE NSW Transcript of Academic Record, or in some instances a Certificate II or Certificate III national qualification.
These are 240 hour TVET courses delivered in three school terms (7.5 hours per week) – designed as ‘fast track’ options to the standard 240 hour courses. Students undertaking a TVET SPY course will attend TAFE NSW a full day each, plus a full block week in the TAFE NSW non-teaching week in June and in Term 3. Students will achieve 4 units of HSC credit in the one year. They will achieve a TAFE NSW Transcript of Academic Record or in some instances a Certificate II national qualification. These courses are open to both Year 11 and Year 12 students. Students who undertake a Framework course offered as a SPY option will be eligible to sit the optional BOSTES HSC exam in that year. Students will also need to complete 70 hours of work placement during the year to meet BOSTES requirements.
TVET 180 hour These courses run for three school terms (4.5-5 hours per week) and give students the opportunity to try out a vocational area that they may wish to pursue as a postschool career option. Students undertaking a 180 hour TVET course will receive either a TAFE NSW Certificate II qualification or a TAFE NSW Transcript of Academic Record. These courses are open to both Year 11 and Year 12 students and give 3 units of HSC credit.

TVET 300 hour These courses run for seven school terms (4 hours per week) – commencing in Year 11 and continuing into year 12. It is highly likely that there will also be a one-week block of additional work and some on-line activities to complete. Students undertaking these course will receive 5 units of HSC credit over the two years and will receive a TAFE transcript of Academic Record and a Certificate III national qualification.

How to apply? Students are advised to speak to their Career Adviser, school TVET Coordinator or Year Adviser to select a course that best meets their educational and vocational needs. Animal care and service workers train, feed, water, groom, bath and exercise animals and clean, disinfect and repair cages.
This course is for students who completed the 120 hr Animal Studies TVET course in 2016.
Students who undertake this course will be provided with a good insight into the wider animal care industry and gain skills necessary to care for animals in work places such as kennels, catteries, pounds, welfare centre and wildlife refuges.
Students will further their skills and knowledge in the animal care industry and allow for completion of the full qualification. This course will give you a head start to further study at TAFE NSW and possibly entry-level employment as an animal attendant or carer.

This course will give students an insight into the Apprenticeship required to enter a trade in the automotive industry.
Technicians must understand the vehicle’s systems to successfully proceed in the trade. The course includes understanding electronics with microprocessors systems, interpreting and diagnosing data, repairing faults and servicing vehicles.
A panel beater is a person who repairs vehicles back to their original condition after having been in an accident. They do this using many skilful techniques ranging from plenishing (metal working technique to smooth sheet metal), welding, filling, and many more. Panel beaters are also able to do vehicle restorations, paint preparations, small electrical repairs, small mechanical repairs, and car detailing.

Clinten and Justin started their journey into the field of automotive mechanics as school students when they commenced their School-based Traineeships with Peter Warren Honda in Warwick Farm as part of their Higher School Certificate. Clinten was in Year 11 at James Busby High School when he began in 2010 and has now completed his apprenticeship and is a qualified Service Technician. Justin followed a few years later from Bonnyrigg High School and is now in the final stages of his apprenticeship. The School-based Apprenticeship/ Traineeship program certainly gave these two young men a great advantage and a direct pathway to employment post-school.

A Spray Painter or Vehicle Painter removes rough spots on vehicle panels, sands surfaces using hand or power tools, colour matches and mixes paint, applies primer and finishing coats and polishes and waxes the finished paint work to restore a vehicle’s body back to its original condition.

After investigating options she chose to undertake a TVET Design Fundamentals course whilst in Year 12 at Robert Townson High School and has never looked back. Outstanding results during her school studies paved the way for her to continue into this exciting industry and now she is undertaking the Certificate III Design Fundamentals at Campbelltown College as a full-time student. Jaykob started his journey as a TVET student at Granville College in 2013 where he undertook a 120 hr Electrotechnology (Career Start) course as part of his HSC studies whilst at St Gregory’s College. During the course Jaykob was exposed to knowledge of the industry and was able to see a future for himself in this field. After finishing school, and receiving good grades in his TVET course, he applied for an apprenticeship with NECA Group Training and was offered an apprenticeship and placed with ARA Electrical, where he is now a 3rd Year apprentice. ‘The TVET course gave me a real insight into the industry and resulted in me receiving 6 months credit towards my trade studies. This was a great advantage.’

In November of 2015, after finishing his HSC, Jordan applied for and received an apprenticeship with Dreamscapes Landscaping Services, where he is now employed and continuing his training in Certificate III in Landscape Construction at Padstow College. ‘The TVET course was certainly a stepping stone for me. I enjoyed the course and the comradery of the other students immensely and was certain that the horticulture landscaping industry was where I wanted to be. I would definitely recommend doing a TVET course to any school student as a way of making an informed decision about a career pathway.’
